First of all, we want to start by saying that parents should approach teen sleep just as you may have approached sleep when your kid was a baby or a toddler. Even as a teen, there are biological factors at play influencing sleep, and yes, your teen may need help learning how to self soothe before bed and even how to build good sleep habits.

One of the biggest barriers to helping teens get the sleep they need is often their parents! 02 Apr 2019028: Daycare Sleep00:24:58

The struggle between parents, providers, and a child’s sleep is an ongoing one. One that Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn hear’s from both sides and one that doesn’t need to happen. To help keep your baby or toddler on a regular sleep routine everyone needs to be on board, and that doesn’t just mean mom and dad. Childcare providers must also be aware of your usual routine, and attempt to maintain it as much as possible. This can be a struggle for both the parent and the provider and communication around these key issues is essential when working together to ensure your child is getting enough sleep. It’s important to have some common understanding early on and develop a shared game plan.

26 May 2020068: Napping on the Go00:07:01

The warmer weather can make things tricky with an increase in events, travel and an effort to get out and enjoy the great weather. It can be hard to find a balance between having your little one sleep at home versus having them sleep anywhere. In addition, some babies may seem to sleep longer in the stroller, then they do in their crib at home. So surely napping on the go is the way to spend the summer, right? While it might be tough, and at times frustrating, to give up a longer length of sleep, there are good reasons to consider working towards the majority of naps taking place in a stationary crib, regardless of their length.

In this episode Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn shares 3 things to consider about napping on the go and how helping your baby to learn to extend their sleep independently is an important skill that will support quality sleep habits for years to come.

03 Dec 2019052: Replay - Sleep Tool #4 - The Methods00:28:03

Our 4th sleep tool is choosing the method - the way we can finally break any final sleep associations, and wean out and final night feeds. You may be asking yourself, why are we only including this sleep tool now and it’s important to understand that while it’s often the first or only thing we think about when deciding to sleep train, the method is actually the smallest piece of the sleep training puzzle therefore we spend less time talking about it. It’s important to understand that we need to also apply the first 3 sleep tools, often just by doing this we can improve your child’s sleep, and if all you are doing is creating a sleep training plan with just choosing a method it’s not going to work.

In choosing a plan you must be comfortable with following it so that you can be consistent. Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn shares different sleep training methods that you can choose to include in your baby’s sleep plan.

21 Jan 2020055: Sleep Regressions00:21:43

"Why is my perfect sleeper all of a sudden waking up and not going back to sleep?" Sound familiar? Sleep Regressions are unavoidable for our babies. Teething, illness, travel, even developmental milestones, unfortunately can disrupt sleep. It’s easy to go to the "Get Through the Night" mode and suddenly what you normally practice goes out the window. These phases pass though and sometimes the new (not so fun) habits stick around.

In this episode Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn explains how sleep regressions like teething, illness, travel, and developmental milestones can affect sleep and what parents should do when it happens.

14 Jan 2020054: Replay - Stop Taking Sleep for Granted00:37:44

It’s the start of the new year and all we see are posts on social media on the new diets that will be tried, the best cleanse to start, or how you all joined a gym, that you’ll likely never go to. We never see the posts about – I’m going to go to bed earlier, or I’m really going to aim on getting regular 7-8 hours of sleep each night. We spend one third of our lives sleeping yet many of us take the need to sleep for granted, and in today’s 24/7 society we are becoming a chronically sleep deprived one.

In today’s episode Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn will be talking about how to help YOU sleep better. She’ll explain to you why you need to focus on your sleep health this year and how you can do it.

17 Sep 2019042: Breastfeeding and Sleep Training00:43:29

We’ve been wanting to do this episode for quite some time because we know how many of you are struggling with both sleep and breastfeeding. Often these are two relationships that go hand in hand and there are many questions from parents in regards to both. The reason why we’ve waited until Season 3 is simply because it was very difficult to find a lactation consultant that checked all our boxes. We wanted to make sure that the professional that we brought to you was very much that, a professional with the right experience and training that gave us the confidence to share them with you. Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn also wanted to make sure that the lactation consultant we spoke with was educated and passionate about breastfeeding and its importance but didn’t make you leave this episode feeling any more breastfeeding guilt than perhaps you already do. It was also very important for us to share someone who understood sleep training, and while perhaps didn’t agree with everything, was open minded enough to have the conversations with us and who also understood that when a lactation consultant and sleep consultant work together, everyone benefits.

Jada Shapiro is the founder of boober, a femtech startup which connects expectant and new parents to expert, in-person #pregnancytopostpartum care providers. Jada is a longtime birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, certified lactation counselor, birth photographer, and mother. An expert in maternal health, she frequently moderates and appears on panels at top parenting conventions and provides birth and breastfeeding consultation to TV shows, A-list actors, and major films (most recently to Jennifer Lawrence in Darren Aronofsky’s latest feature). Jada is a media expert on childbirth, lactation, and newborn parenting, and is regularly sought out for insight and information by major media outlets. She is also the founder of Birth Day Presence, which, since 2002, has helped 20,000+ New York families bring their babies into the community with childbirth-education classes and doula services.

25 Feb 2020060: Why Your Child is Stalling at Bedtime00:16:19

Kids who never learned strong sleep skills as babies and toddlers are still struggling with sleep. In other cases, kids who were great sleepers can suddenly be faced with sleep issues too. What’s interesting though, is that even though many adults struggle with sleep, parents can be quick to assume that their child could actually ‘just go to sleep’ and not have the sleep problems they're having. In reality, that’s hardly ever the case. If your child has been struggling for more than a week, then they likely need some assistance in finding their way back to better sleep.

In this episode Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn explains the two big issues that make it hard for kids to fall asleep.

12 May 2020066: How Your Sheets and Blankets Help You Sleep00:12:11

Have you ever wondered why climbing into bed and under the covers feels so good? Regardless of whether you like to sleep with just a light sheet or prefer the heaviness of a weighted blanket, there’s something about being covered up as you try and fall sleep that most people can’t do without. There are physiological and behavioral reasons why sheets and blankets help you sleep, and essentially, all the science behind sleeping while covered with a sheet or blanket supports the importance of creating a solid sleep environment. While we may not be able to clearly say that sleeping with blankets improves your general health, they will certainly improve your sleep. And since quality sleep is strongly associated with overall health and wellness, let’s just say we should all take a minute to appreciate what our bedding does for us! Keep reading for a closer look at how science plays a role in your body’s need to be covered at night for a solid night’s rest.

In this episode Sleep Expert Alanna McGinn explains how the more you know about getting a good night’s rest, the greater chance you’ll have of getting the sleep you need. Creating an ideal sleep environment starts with auditing your bedroom, and this absolutely includes the type of sheets and blankets you’re using.
