06 Nov 2019Cassidy Russell Is A Nerdy Therapist00:27:31

As a total nerd herself, Cassidy Russell, MA, LMFT, likes to say that her niche is nerds. Cassidy is able to use her knowledge on various fandoms whether it be Harry Potter, Pokemon, My Hero Academia, or Star Wars, to connect with people who often have a difficult time connecting with others. Nothing is “too nerdy” a topic for Cassidy. Through these topics Cassidy is able to gain a better understanding of the client and help the client connect what they are seeing in these various forms of media to their everyday life.

And on this week's episode Cassidy shares her story and background and how she helps teens by being a truly authentic nerd and therapist.

Helping kids and teens feel better about themselves and build healthy connections with friends and family is an absolute joy for Cassidy. Navigating relationships and growing up can be tough, but Cassidy knows how to help. She excels in her ability to build a strong rapport with kids, teens and their parents, helping to nurture the very foundation of therapy and healing.

Outside of the therapy room Cassidy can often be found sipping a cup of hot tea while enjoying one of her favorite hobbies:  reading, creative writing and playing video games.

28 Jul 2023AI in Therapy: Top 5 ChatGPT Prompts for Private Practice with Lisa Mustard00:12:57

In this episode we're diving into the intersection of technology and therapy, exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence to augment our therapeutic work. In particular, we're focusing on ChatGPT, an AI developed by OpenAI, and how it can be utilized in private practice by generating prompts.

Listen to the episode with Kym Tolson.

Get ALL THE PODCOURSES for $30!

First, ChatGPT can aid in understanding specific therapeutic techniques. For example, a therapist could ask: 'ChatGPT, can you help me understand how cognitive behavioral therapy techniques can be effectively utilized for a client struggling with anxiety and panic attacks? What are some possible exercises or strategies we can work through?' In response, ChatGPT might offer explanations of exposure therapy, cognitive restructuring, or relaxation techniques that could be useful for the client.

Second, ChatGPT can assist in formulating questions to help explore a client's self-perception. A therapist could say, 'ChatGPT, I have a new client who is struggling with self-esteem issues. Can you generate some questions that I could use during our sessions?' ChatGPT could then suggest questions like 'What are three personal strengths you believe you possess?' or 'How do you react when you make a mistake?' to help the therapist gain insights into the client's self-perception.

Third, ChatGPT can provide explanations of complex therapeutic modalities. For instance, 'ChatGPT, could you provide me with an explanation of the fundamentals of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy?' In response, it might offer a breakdown of the eight phases of EMDR or suggest practical examples of its use in trauma therapy.

Fourth, ChatGPT can be useful for preparing group therapy sessions. A therapist could ask: 'ChatGPT, I'm seeing an increase in clients dealing with workplace stress. Can you provide an outline for a possible group therapy session that focuses on developing coping strategies and building resilience?' It might then outline a session incorporating stress management techniques, role-play exercises, and group discussions.

Lastly, ChatGPT can support in developing a treatment plan. The prompt could be: 'ChatGPT, I need some help to create a treatment plan for a patient suffering from severe social anxiety. Can you provide some guidance?' From there, it could suggest steps including initial rapport building, psychoeducation, skills training, cognitive restructuring, exposure therapy, and maintenance.

In all these ways, AI like ChatGPT can serve as an invaluable resource for therapists, supplementing our skills and knowledge. It's not about replacing the human connection, which is central to therapy, but about leveraging technology to enhance it. As always, any use of AI should prioritize confidentiality and ethical considerations.

13 Sep 2023Healing from Within: The Basics of Internal Family Systems with Dr. Richard C. Schwartz and Moshe Norman, LCSW01:14:37

This is quite a unique episode. It’s about an hour-long conversation that Dr. Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, had with a group of mental health clinicians. He’s sharing his IFS model and taking questions from the group. The group is Mondays with Moshe and you’ll hear from its creator, Moshe Norman, in just a few minutes. But I wanted to tell you a few things about the episode before you get to the main content.

This is a recording of a live conversation. The audio at times isn’t the best. However, it’s clear enough that you should be able to make out what is being said and asked. Dr Scwartz’s audio is great but some of the audio from the group is a little fuzzy or just not so clear.

The group is composed of mental health clinicians who are mainly Jewish so you may hear some phrases or words that you aren’t familiar with however the content shared is definitely clinical and not from a religious perspective. If you’re unsure of what something means or you’re curious to learn more, feel free to reach out to me at lisa at lisamustard.com.

And one more thing, the information provided is solely for educational purposes and should not be a substitute for any work you are doing with your doctor or therapist.

Want to sign up for Mondays with Moshe? Send an email to mnormanlcsw@gmail.com and ask to be a part of the group.

21 Jun 20235 Reasons You Need to Have an Email List00:12:08

In this episode I'm sharing the 5 reasons you need to have an email list - seriously this is one of my favorite topics because without an email list, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

But before we dive in, I want to share a personal experience from last week.

Last week we were in Orlando Florida for a volleyball tournament, and I rarely checked social media. It was so nice to disconnect from the noise and distractions of social media. So nice in fact, it’s been hard for me to log back on now that we’re back home.

During this social media hiatus, I sold a few podcourses and connected with some potential guests. I only posted on social media one time.

Whenever I step away from the constant scroll and swipe,  it allows me to truly immerse myself in the world of email marketing, creating meaningful connections and nurturing relationships with my subscribers.

This reminded me of the incredible potential we have to connect with our audience on a deeper level, beyond the surface-level engagement of social media algorithms. Email provides a serene and intimate space where we can share valuable content, insights, and offers that truly resonate with our subscribers.

So, let's embrace the wisdom gained from my own vacation experience. Let's explore the fantastic reasons why having an email list is not just a marketing strategy, but a profound means of building authentic connections with our audience.

Listen to the episode to hear the 5 reasons you need an email list.

If you like this topic, then grab my list of 50 ideas for therapists to generate more income. In the email series I also cover ideas of how to grow your emal list, what types of lead magnets work to grow your list as well the mindset you need to cultivate when stepping outside of the therapy room and pivoting your skill set.

My guest in this episode is Patrick Ferguson, a professional musician who has played drums for Vic Chesnutt, Mike Mills (REM), Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones), the Psychedelic Furs, Athens GA’s Five Eight, Pinky Doodle Poodle from Tokyo, Japan, and a hundred other bands.

In this episode he shares his story and how he helps other musicians through his podcast.

22 Jun 2022How to Grow Your Email List Fast with Lisa Mustard00:09:23

This is a fun and exciting topic and I’m always up for sharing what’s working not just for me when it comes to marketing my offers but what’s working for others.

DISCLOSURE: THIS EPISODE CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS, MEANING I GET A COMMISSION IF YOU DECIDE TO MAKE A PURCHASE THROUGH MY LINKS, AT NO COST TO YOU.

Hang out in any therapist facebook group and you’ll see the question - how are you marketing your courses, services, products, etc and is it working? Well, I guess we should define what ‘working’ means first. Working to me is this - are my marketing efforts giving me leads - are they generating new people onto my email marketing lists? Then the next part of defining working - are these leads buying what i’m offering?

So if your efforts aren’t generating leads, then I'd say your marketing isn’t working.

Now of course there are tons of ways to market what it is that you do and if you are just getting started with growing your private practice, I’m going to encourage you to listen to podcasters and bloggers that focus on just that. While I think you’ll get some good ideas from this episode, you’re probably best served by those who specialize in growing a practice. You can listen to episode 26 with Kate and Katie of the Private Practice Start Up where they chat about growing a business you love. There are so many clinicians out there who help with starting a private practice, it’s not hard to find information nowadays.

This episode is more for those clinicians who might be considering coaching, offering a course, selling an ebook or book, promoting a product or perhaps you’re unsure. But you hear all the time that the money is in your email list so you are wanting to start one and I am here to say go for it! I wish I had started sooner!

Let’s talk about what’s working for me right now plus so many others out there.

Here is my marketing funnel:

Create a Quiz, promote the quiz, leads join my email list and now I'm making sales. Currently I have 2 quizzes  - one titled what podcast should you create and the other is what is your activewear personality style?

The questions I ask allow me to find out where my audience sits on these topics and then when I have their responses I can create emails that address the topics and issues they want more information on.

It’s been a great way to both grow my list and then serve my audience in a more specific (and fun) way.

Create your quiz, yes you can promote it on your social media channels but I highly recommend putting some marketing dollars behind it and run ads too. Once they take your quiz, they are on your email list. You’ll want to set up your initial follow up email series so once someone takes your quiz they start receiving your emails. This initial email series is a way for you to greet them and start nurturing the relationship.

I’m not an expert on email marketing but I have been at it for a few years and my best emails come when I’m working to nurture the relationship with my audience as well as serve them with valuable information. I used to dread emailing my list but since I've changed my approach I really look forward to crafting my emails and engaging with those on my list.

Now that I have my email list up and running and I’m nurturing the list and relationships, I make my offers. I’m not selling to them in each email - I’m offering a lot of free information and I'm also reminding them I have coaching packages too.

I’ve learned that email marketing is part strategy, part engagement, another part consistency and a dash of fun. I had so many doubts about starting an email list but I’m so glad I started!

Want to get a taste of what I’m talking about? You can take my quizzes here and here and see how I email my lists. Honestly I believe quizzes are a hidden secret for online marketing - don’t delay in getting yours going today.

I use Smart Quiz Builder which is a website plug in. There is a one time licensing fee cost (not a monthly fee like most quiz sites out there) and the quizzes are hosted on my website, not someone else’s. You can create all types of quizzes and it’s very easy to use. (This is coming from someone who’s afraid I will blow up my site if I hit the wrong button.) It’s very user friendly and has stunning templates that will allow you to create quizzes that stand out.

It’s been a gamechanger for growing my email lists.

Ok so maybe now you’re considering creating a quiz to grow your email list. The sky’s the limit with what kinds of quizzes you can create. I recommend reverse engineering what you want to accomplish…want to offer coaching services? Want to sell your products? What type of quiz would help you get your ideal customer on your list? Create it and grow your email list!

If you love this marketing idea yet feel a little overwhelmed, I get it. Want to talk it over with someone who’s been in your shoes and has felt a little lost and confused on how to move forward with pivoting your skill set? Then book a free 20 minute consultation with me. Let’s talk and see if I can help you figure out which way to go with your ideas. Link to book the call is here.

I hope you enjoyed this episode! More to come on quiz creation and how to drive traffic to them on future episodes.

Looking for an email marketing provider? I use Aweber.

16 Oct 2019A Master Therapist Reflects 00:41:09

There are so many incredible things to let you know about today’s guest, Dr. Vince Ward.  I first met him when I was a graduate student in the Counselor Education program at the University of South Carolina and over the years we have run into each other at workshops and seminars. He always has a warm smile on his face and a kind word to offer. When I saw him last month at a VA event, I jumped at the opportunity to invite him onto the show.

Vince is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been mentored by a few of the best master therapists in the world, including Carl Whitaker and Robert A. Johnson. He draws on a number of techniques from a variety of approaches in his work. He is trained in Systemic, Psychodynamic, Jungian, and Gestalt therapies, among others. And as you will hear in our discussion, we share the same clinical supervisor, Dr. Russell Haber.

For today’s episode I asked Vince Ward to discuss whatever he wanted to in regards to the field of talk therapy. Vince has been a therapist for many years even before licensing was a "thing" and I am always interested to hear his perspective and take on ideas within our field and profession.

We cover quite a few topics and notions such as understanding the sides of the brain, the absence of the feminine in men, his view on telehealth, his road to becoming a therapist, what he hopes to be his legacy and why we therapists need to continue to work on ourselves and why we shouldn’t ever give up on self examination.

We hope you enjoy this episode.

You can learn more about Vince and connect with him on his website.

15 Jul 2023The Art of Reinventing Yourself: 5 Expert Tips with Lisa Mustard00:10:03

Welcome to "The Art of Reinventing Yourself in Midlife," where I share my tips for finding new paths and embracing change. In today's episode, I delve into five key strategies to help you navigate the journey of reinventing yourself in midlife.

On my quest for reinvention, I discovered that self-reflection is the cornerstone. Embrace those deep thoughts and ask yourself, "What brings me joy? What skills do I want to develop?" It's time to embark on a journey aligned with your authentic self. Maybe writing is your newfound passion—imagine a career as a freelance writer or a blog where your expertise shines!

As I continued my exploration, I uncovered the importance of seeking opportunities for learning and growth. No matter your age, learning keeps the fire within burning bright! Enroll in online courses, attend workshops, or find mentors who fuel your hunger for knowledge. Picture yourself capturing the world through a camera lens, thanks to a photography course or a local photography club. The possibilities for reinvention are endless!

My adventure wouldn't be complete without cultivating a supportive network. Surround yourself with like-minded souls who cheer you on and believe in your dreams. Join networking groups, attend conferences, and connect with mentors who inspire and guide you. Picture the incredible insights and collaboration opportunities that await you in mastermind groups or vibrant online forums. Together, we're unstoppable!

As I trekked onward, I discovered the secret sauce: embracing flexibility and adaptability. Change can be intimidating, but it's where the magic happens. Embrace it with open arms, turning setbacks into stepping stones. If you stumble along your new career path, don't fret! Stay nimble, adjust your approach, and explore alternative routes. With resilience and perseverance, you'll conquer any challenge.

And last but not least: taking action and setting goals! Dreams are fantastic, but concrete steps and goals make them come to life. Identify those achievable milestones and break them down into actionable steps. Each small victory brings you closer to your reinvention. From completing a business plan to launching your product or service, every milestone is worth celebrating!

In conclusion, I embarked on an exhilarating journey of self-discovery and transformation. These strategies provided the compass to navigate the path of reinvention. Embrace self-reflection, seek opportunities for growth, cultivate a supportive network, adapt to change, and take action by setting goals. Your reinvention story is unfolding, one exciting step at a time!

29 Jan 2020Virtual Reality Therapy For Kids and Young Adults With David Waltenbaugh00:48:29

David Waltenbaugh is a Cofounder and the CEO of Root VR, a platform of therapeutic and educational virtual reality tools to promote and support pediatric, adolescent, and young adult mental health; helping children from adverse home environments to better adapt to change and ultimately become well-adjusted and highly contributing community members while also training and educating parents and caretakers to better understand and accommodate these children.

In addition to David’s specific work with Root VR, he is building a network of research partners, advisors and creatives/developers to further explore novel applications of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) in medicine, healthcare, therapy, and education with Media Plural, an immersive media production and strategy startup focused on VR-For-Good.

David and I met late last year when we were both finalists in the Inaugural Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Pitch Competition. David’s pitch for Root VR took the grand prize.

His mission and vision for helping kids has been crystal clear in every conversation we’ve had and I’m excited to have him on the show so you can learn more about his therapeutic tools and how you can get involved.

A really cool thing happened recently, the app, Hom (pronounced "Home") by Root VR is now available for purchase on the Apple App Store and is coming to the Google Play Store as well.

Recently I was asked how I manage my time. Being a busy mom, wife, therapist, podcaster, chauffeur, cook, puppy wrangler,,just kidding on the puppy wrangler,,Billy does most of that …

Here’s the truth - I am very intentional in my time management. I take a look at all the things I want to get done and that need to get done and just prioritize as best as I can. I do love my shortcuts like my crock pot for batch cooking, getting up earlier than our girls and getting some work done, working out early in the morning because if I wait too long in the day my workouts don’t happen. I pretty much wear a uniform so I don’t have to think about what will I wear to work (it’s these pants, tank and cardigan..I can dress them up or down…you can learn about my favorite clothing brand, ZYIA active on my site). I just look for ways to make my life more efficient.

I hope this helps another busy person out there!

Be sure to grab your first continuing education contact hour on me! Head to my site and enter your email for a code that gives you your first CE for FREE. There are 4 podcourses to choose from - a little something for everyone! Then you enter the code at checkout and the podcourse is yours. 13 May 2023The Secret to Finding Work-Life Balance for Moms00:09:22

In this episode, I challenge the notion of work-life balance for mothers and suggest that it's more about values and priorities than striving for a perfect balance every day.

By gaining clarity on our values, decision-making becomes easier, time management improves, self-care becomes a natural practice, and relationships become stronger.

Listen to the episode to hear practical strategies for finding balance, including prioritizing self-care, setting realistic expectations, establishing boundaries, delegating responsibilities, scheduling and organizing, practicing time management, seeking support and building a network, and incorporating mindfulness and gratitude into daily life.

Remember that finding balance is an ongoing process, unique to each individual, and that flexibility, self-compassion, and adaptability are crucial.

Is talk therapy alone really enough to create lasting change? In this episode, I sit down with Susanne Navas, a therapist in residency, to explore why true healing requires more than just conversations—it needs a mind-body approach that integrates movement, sleep, and lifestyle habits.

Susanne shares her personal journey from life coaching and triathlon training to becoming a therapist and how her diverse background shapes her holistic approach.

We dive into:
✔️ Why sleep is the #1 “medicine” for mental health (and how to improve it!)
✔️ The surprising way movement can shift emotions and break mental blocks
✔️ How digital habits impact anxiety, confidence, and self-worth
✔️ A powerful mindset shift to help you take control of your healing journey
✔️ Practical tools like cognitive shuffling, movement therapy, and breathwork to help manage anxiety, trauma, and stress.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in therapy or wondered if there’s a better way to heal, this episode is for you.

24 Jul 2019How To Write Content That Converts To New Clients00:50:33

Are you stuck in a rut on what to share on social media? Feeling a little uninspired perhaps? Need some ideas and something to spark your creativity? If you’re nodding your head and saying yessss..then today’s episode is for you!

Danielle Cevallos is an incredible content creator and copywriter. How do I know? I recently hired her to write copy for an ad I placed in the Low Country Mental Health Conference program guide. She asked me a couple of questions and within days she had a few options for me to choose from.

What I realized in this process is this -  It’s not so much about our clinical jargon. It's not so much about the initials after our names. It’s more about how we solve problems for our ideal customers. Danielle had me get super clear on what I wanted the outcome to be. And from there, she wrote excellent ad copy!

If you’re wanting to get better at your content creation, then this episode is a gold mine of advice and tips. Danielle breaks down how you can talk to your audience, how to build your content out, and why being consistent, authentic and transparent on social media can do amazing things for your business.

You can find Danielle here, on Facebook , in her Facebook group and on Instagram

We hope you enjoy the episode! If you like what you hear, please rate, review and subscribe. Thank you!

08 Feb 2023An Honest Conversation on Therapist Burnout & Self Care with Rachel Altvater Psy.D., RPT-S00:32:37

Today, we’re talking about an issue that affects many in the mental health field - therapist burnout. As therapists, we're trained to help others and support them through their struggles, but what happens when the support we offer takes a toll on our own mental and emotional well-being? In this episode, Dr Rachel Altvater joins me to share her experiences with burnout and offer practical tips for avoiding and overcoming it. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation on the important topic of therapist burnout.

Dr. Rachel Altvater (Psy.D., RPT-S™) is an award-winning, pioneering expert, leader, researcher, international trainer, author, and supervisor in the field of play therapy. She is a Licensed Psychologist in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia, and she holds national certifications as a Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor™ and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She is the owner of Creative Psychological Health Services, co-owner of North Star Creations, past president of the Maryland/DC Association for Play Therapy, editorial advisory board member for the International Journal of Play Therapy®, advisory board member for Digital Play Therapy™ and AscendantVR, clinical consultant and content creator for Cognitive Leap, and instructor for Hopscotch. Dr. Altvater authored the book Perspective: Contemplating the Complexities of Our Realities, published her research in the International Journal of Play Therapy on technology use in play therapy, and is a contributing author in numerous scholarly texts on implementing digital technologies in play therapy practice.

I also want to share that Rachel has just published a book titled -  Perspective: Contemplating the Complexities of Our Realities This psychological, self-insight ‘think book’ aims to shed light on the complexities of human perspective. Each person filters their perceptions and reality through their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The method in which we view the world, ourselves, and one another varies person to person. While humans have commonalities, each person is truly unique; no two people have the same structure within which they perceive and evaluate their lived experiences. A vast array of perspectives adds immense depth and opportunity for growth as a species; however, human beings in our polarized society often struggle to empathize with or understand one another. Deep rooted human injustices and suffering combined with ignorance to and invalidation of others’ lived experiences exacerbates misunderstanding and division. This makes reaching a unified ground exceptionally challenging.

05 Jul 2023How to Create Your First Podcourse with Lisa Mustard00:13:52

Ready to dive into the world of podcourses? In this episode, I'm going to break it down for you.

First things first, let's talk about the technical aspects. To create your own podcourse or self-study course, you'll need a learning management system. If you're just testing the waters and don't want to commit to a platform like Teachable or Kajabi right away, I recommend checking out FreshLearn (affiliate link). They have an all-in-one platform and offer a free trial for you to test it out and see if it suits your needs.

Now, let's discuss recording your content. Do you prefer audio, video, or both? Personally, I like to keep it simple and use Zoom to record my podcourses. Once I have the content, I pass it on to my editor, who works her magic on it. If you're a busy therapist like me, I highly recommend outsourcing the editing process. If you need help finding an editor, I can connect you with mine, Chelsea. She's fantastic and very helpful. Connect with Chelsea Weaver Podcasting.

Alright, let's move on to the content and the steps to get approved as a continuing education provider. I want to share a great resource with you—an episode by Dr. David Hall and James Marland called "Scaling Your Therapy Practice with Continuing Education Courses." They explain different ways to become an approved provider and provide valuable insights. I highly recommend giving it a listen after you finish here.

Now, when it comes to content, I'll share what I did to get approved by NBCC (National Board for Certified Counselors). Head over to the NBCC website and explore their CE Provider information. It's all laid out there for you. It may take some time to read through it carefully and understand what you need to do, but it's not too difficult.

Here's a quick overview of what you'll need to know if you're aiming for self-study approved provider status. You must create your self-study course before applying. NBCC wants to see your course as a customer would experience it. This includes your landing page, sales page, course materials, and more.

Now, let's talk about choosing your topic. It's up to you, but I suggest starting with a topic that all therapists need. You'll also need to define your learning objectives, create a knowledge test, include a course evaluation, and offer a certificate of completion.

Who will present the material? Will it be you or someone else? Regardless, make sure to follow the NBCC guidelines for presenters. You can find all the details in the provider policy.

The amount of continuing education credit you offer depends on the length of your content. You'll need at least 60 minutes of content for 1 contact hour or 1 CE credit.

Once your course is ready, upload the content to your learning management system and test everything to ensure it works smoothly. Then, submit the course along with the necessary paperwork to NBCC and wait for their response. You may need to make some changes or edits to meet their requirements, but they are usually very helpful throughout the process.

If your course gets approved, they will provide instructions on how to proceed. Now it's time to market your course and hopefully start making sales. Remember, marketing is crucial, so be prepared to put in some effort to spread the word about your amazing courses.

I'll cover marketing in another episode and share what I've done to successfully sell my podcourses. Stay tuned for that!

I hope this episode has been helpful to you. If you're interested in getting continuing education going as a side income and want support from me, feel free to email me at lisa@lisamustard.com to set up a consultation.

30 Mar 2020Therapist Self Care During A Pandemic: How are YOU doing?00:44:59

While you are checking in with your clients, are you checking in with yourself? That was the question I was recently asked by a colleague and it got me thinking about our profession and peers. As therapists we preach it all the time, right? Yet are we actually walking the walk? Especially during times like these when our clients may need a little more from us. How are we managing ourselves? Our self care? Our mindset?

I gathered 3 peers and asked them to weigh in on this topic. I learned a lot while talking with them and hope you find this bonus episode helpful as you navigate being a helping professional during a pandemic.

We hope  you enjoy this episode!

18 Oct 2023Guided Meditation for Releasing Anxiety with Lisa Mustard00:13:55

This is a brand-new format and something I've been wanting to create for quite some time. This week's episode is a guided meditation.

I listen to guided meditations when I have issues going to sleep, and since October 7th, I've had trouble falling asleep. Usually, I turn to the Mindfulness app and pick a meditation or music and within a few minutes, I'm relaxed and asleep.

I have been thinking about writing my own guided meditations and I just went ahead and decided, you know what? I'm doing it!  And with everything that is going on in the world right now, I'm hearing from a lot of you that you're having a hard time with anxiety. You're having a hard time with feelings of sadness, and I totally understand.

This guided meditation should not be listened to while driving or when you want energy. It's best for when you want to relax and fall asleep.

I hope you enjoy this guided meditation and it helps you! If you'd like more guided meditations, send me an email: lisa@lisamustard.com and let me know.

01 Jul 2020Step By Step To Creating Multiple Income Streams With Nicole Liloia00:37:12

Before I jump into the intro for this episode, I wanted to share something that’s been brewing within me for a while.

When I began podcasting, I wanted to focus on talk therapy topics and issues yet I’m also really passionate about another topic.  And that is helping women live their best lives as they move into mid life. You may or may not know that when I hit 40, that’s when I made the decision to start living my life differently. So for the past 7 years i’ve worked to live more authentically and congruentally

And now I want to start bringing this information to the podcast! I’m lining up guests that will not only inspire you to see mid life differently but will also bring you the know how to do so.

I’m unsure yet if I will start a whole new podcast or rebrand this one. Podcasts are a lot of work and it’s just me right now behind the scenes (well except for my audio engineer and editor, Laura and my website developer, Michael) so creating and producing 2 separate podcasts feels overwhelming yet also at the same time it feels possible. Right now I’m just hanging out in the land of possibilities. I hope you stay tuned to see and hear the upcoming shifts in my podcast world!

Ok so let me tell you about this week’s episode! I’m talking with Nicole Liloia.

She's a Business Coach & Strategist, who works with women entrepreneurs to help take charge of their business, money, and life so they can achieve bigger profits and even bigger impact.

She knows that running a business can get complicated when you’re doing it on your own, but she’s here to help you simplify things so you can reach your goals faster without burning out.

If you’re anything like me, you may doubt yourself and what you’re doing from time to time but Nicole knows you were made for this and she’s excited to help you expand to the next level of your journey.

And in this episode she gives tips and advice on how to go from idea to implementation!  She talks all about developing relationships, creating email lists, building your audience, group coaching, online courses, and much more. I learned so much from our talk and hope you do too!

01 Jan 2022Lessons I’ve Learned In 2021: A Look Back 00:13:48

Have you taken the time to reflect on the lessons you learned in 2021 yet? Or are you still in go go hustle mode and have promised yourself you’ll take that time over the holidays? Because I’m usually the one who doesn’t do much reflecting until I’m sitting on the beach and looking at the ocean and then the tears come - mainly happy tears of WOW we made it through the year and look at what we’ve accomplished! But sometimes the tears are for the fact that I still haven’t reached some of my goals. Goals I made at the beginning of the year somehow got buried under other priorities or kicked to the side because they felt too big and scary. Well, I promised myself this end of year reflection was going to be different. Instead of realizing what I didn’t accomplish and being frustrated with myself, I’m making a plan for moving forward and getting crystal clear on what I need to do to reach those goals. And in this episode, I’m sharing lessons I learned in 2021 and how I plan to take action on going after those dreams.

We just returned from our annual family Christmas trip to Edisto Beach, South Carolina. We had such a fun time. The weather was perfect, and we did a lot of fishing. I actually caught fish this year. I have been listening to Neville Goddard’s talks on manifesting. I was telling Billy about how to manifest what you desire, and I kid you not I reeled in 2 fish after I stated my manifestation to the universe. Now I don’t know if that’s too woo woo for you, but it worked!

Ok so let’s get into this episode. Truth be told these lessons have more to do with my personal life than the podcast however they affect the podcast and my vision for moving forward.

(Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning I get a commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links, at NO cost to you. Please read my terms of service and privacy policy for more information.)

So let me just dive right on in and share lesson #1. I can’t do all the things I want to do and be successful. This is something my husband has been telling me for pretty much all of 2021. I have many many irons in the fire - being a mom, being a wife, my job, the podcast, activewear business, creating continuing education, life coach, professional interviewer - just listing them out has me feeling overwhelmed but also excited. The problem is that I love each one of these roles and it’s hard for me to choose where to put my focus and energy some days. Don’t get me wrong, my family always comes first yet that’s where things start to get even more overwhelming. Our girls started playing club volleyball this year which means they each practice 2 days a week and I'm the main chauffeur around here. So, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday I’m taking them to and from practice. Some days I am able to sit and get work done but I really love watching them practice so more often than not, I get nothing done.

Here’s why this is a lesson. My highest priority is my family. For me to feel successful in focusing on my family, that means less time to focus on other things, like creating continuing education. It also means less time on social media, which I really don’t mind giving up, but that’s where I do the majority of my networking and connecting. When I put my family first, I feel successful. One of the reasons this is so important to me is because when I was a kid, my family life was a lot different than the one I've created with my husband. My parents were divorced, and my mom was our main caretaker and many evenings we were on our own while she was in grad school. When you’re a kid that’s a big deal to not have your mom around, right? We were pretty good kids and didn’t get into much trouble and she had us surrounded by people who loved us. Yet I knew that if I had kids, I would be there for them more than my mom was able to. I’m not a helicopter parent, I've seen the issues that come from being one of those, but I am accessible to our girls when they need me. And that to me is success.

What does this lesson mean for 2022? I’m unsure. However, I know it means less irons in the fire. So, stay tuned, you know I'll keep you posted.

Lesson #2. Self-care is critical but it’s hard to do. Raise your hand if you’ve discussed self-care with your clients this year? Ok now raise your other hand if you’ve put your own self-care on the back burner. Because I've got both up and I’m waving them wildly! Over the summer I realized I had to get more intentional with my self care. The first thing I did was take Facebook off my phone. That was a self-care gift I didn't know I needed until I did it. I do love connecting and networking with friends and peers, but that algorithm is just too much. I finally realized that it wasn’t good for my mood or energy. So, I just deleted it one day. Poof. Gone. I’ve also cut back on the amount of news I take in too. I also started walking. I sit so much, and my body was starting to revolt. My tight hips and hamstrings were constantly barking at me. One day I just went for a walk, and it was an instant mood and energy boost. Yes, I’ve added a stretching routine too. Speaking of exercise, I get asked a lot about what I do for workouts. I lift weights 3-4 days a week and I walk. Here’s the workout plan I follow if you’re curious.

Self-care also means eating nutritious foods and taking my vitamins. Staying away from processed foods and sugar means I’ll sleep better, have more energy plus my skin glows when I eat whole foods. Speaking of glowing skin and energy, here’s my current favorite breakfast - unsweetened almond milk, vanilla protein powder, mixed frozen berries, banana, coconut oil and frozen spinach or kale, a few ice cubes and blend it up. Fills me up for hours and helps me reach my nutrition goals.  I’ve also been sticking to a sleep schedule and less time watching netflix during the week before going to bed. Sticking to my sleep schedule means sticking to my wake-up time. I get up by 5am and either get a workout in or work on the podcast. I find the early am hours to be my best time to focus and create podcast content. I love getting up early and getting stuff done, it helps me get a jump start on my day and I check things off the list. Plus, it’s super quiet in the house. I’m really liking the self-care schedule I have set up right now. Other things I do for my self-care: I get a facial every month, I limit my alcohol consumption to 1-2 adult beverages a week, drink my water, keep my boundaries in check, say no to things.

The 3rd Lesson. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok. This is an idea that in the past I would say yet didn’t truly understand the full meaning of it until this year. What changed? 2020 happened and we had to make decisions for ourselves and kids that not everyone agreed with. My people pleasing ways would come out and I’d bend over backwards to explain our decisions to others. I would find myself worked up and emotionally flooded and I'd start to second guess my values, ideas and beliefs. Whoa. This is not the person I’ve worked hard to become. It’s ok we’re different. It’s ok that not everyone is going to like me. This year made me realize that I have to stop hiding myself because there are people out there who get me and want to be a part of my life and my community.

I asked a few people in my community what 2021 taught them and here is what they shared:

Damien Hatfield, Owner of RA Martial Arts in the UK shared: "I am not an Island" I have an amazing team and I need to allow them to help. Nature of a control freak I'm afraid.

Yes! I love this! Damien, thank you for sharing. Working so much in the details of your business may not allow you to use your skills to grow the business. Delegate the tasks that keep you from reaching your business goals.

Tosha Rollins of the Autism in Action Podcast said her goal for 2022 is to simplify and streamline and put herself first to increase successful outcomes. I’m excited for her! I wonder what this will look like for her. Maybe it’s setting up new systems. Perhaps it’s setting boundaries with her work? Self-care may be something she’s referring to as well. What we do know is that when we neglect our own needs, we just aren’t as productive or helpful for others.

So, looking forward to 2022 here are a few things I’m committing to doing. First is to grow my business with less time on social media. We’ve been told over and over again that we must have a social media presence. But I am beginning to see that less is more. In the past I had been taught (and was teaching) that we had to post 3-5 times a day to get visible. I’m here to bust that myth and also apologize to everyone I said that too! Yes, it’s important but we don’t need to be a slave to sharing content to get seen. It’s more about creating valuable content that your audience wants to see. What does that mean for me? More podcasts and blogging and less time fighting the algorithms.

Speaking of blogging, I have my blog up and running on my site. I’m planning to blog at least once a week and I’ll cover a variety of things so be sure to check it out.

I’ll also be doing more solo episodes. Don’t worry I’ll still be interviewing therapists and other helping professionals; I’ll just be spending some more time teaching what I’m learning about growing my business and podcast.

So, what are your biggest lessons from 2021? And what are you looking forward to in 2022? Send me a DM on Instagram or an email - I’d love to hear from you.

15 Feb 2022Heal Your Relationship Trauma with Christian Jackson, LPC, LPC-S, The Daddy Issues Expert00:38:30

Hey friends, I have some news! I’ve expanded my services and offerings under the The Therapy Show umbrella and am helping therapists escape burnout! How do you ask? Well the details are coming out in my next episode but I’ll spill the tea a little bit right now. How do I help you with your burnout? Well many of you are sharing with me that you’d like to cut back on the hours you are seeing clients and spend more time selling your products. But you don’t know how to really make that happen.

Now I’ve been there and know this feeling well and I had to make the decision on how to handle it..and you all know one of the ways I handled it was to put my energy and time into creating this podcast and ultimately from the podcast, a passive income stream.

But I did it backwards. I created the podcast first with really no clear path to monetization. Instead I should have known what my passive income product was going to be first, create that product first and then base my podcast around that product!

Think about that. Having a podcast that specifically drives traffic to your passive income products. A podcast that is evergreen and found by new listeners day after day. Those listeners then head to your website to learn more about your courses or services.

Would you be excited about that? New ears finding you every day? New customers purchasing your books, your courses, your webinars..whatever it is you are selling.

Podcasting is a perfect way to market your products. Let’s face it, that's usually the number one reason why people want to come onto my show. To pitch to my audience.

Well, let's create your own podcast where you are the expert, you share the value, you share the advice and help. Then from there they head to your website to purchase your products.

Stop trying to get on other peoples podcasts and create your own. And that’s what I’m going to teach you very soon. So stay tuned!

Christian Jackson is a trauma specialist who works with women who are feeling a lot like she once was: overwhelmed, lost, and full of pride. You will learn practical ways to snap out of the haze of existing and begin learning and using tools to slow down the racing thoughts, get better sleep, examine unhealthy habits, reevaluate your relationships, and set boundaries

She is the author of Daddy Issues: How to Detangle from the Sins of Our Fathers and Daddy Issues: How to Detangle From the Sins of Our Fathers Workbook & Journal. She also has a course called, The Grace Academy: Learn the blueprint to healing from relationship traumas. Plus her podcast is coming out soon.

She is also a wife and mom with a busy and booming private practice here in Columbia SC.

In this episode Christian chats about how she discovered her niche, what daddy issues are and how she serves her audience with value, advice and her expertise.

We hope you enjoy this episode!

Learn grounded mental health practices and emotional resilience tools that go beyond mainstream Insta-therapy. Therapist Rose Skeeters shares countercultural insights rooted in truth, family, and faith.

I’m thrilled to welcome back my friend and fellow therapist Rose Skeeters for another powerful conversation—this time as part of the Just Therapy podcast series. This series is all about values-driven mental health, rooted in family, faith, and tradition. Whether you're a therapist or someone seeking real, practical insights, you're in the right place.

Rose and I dive deep into the cultural trends impacting mental health today—from Insta-therapy soundbites and boundary-setting overload to the lost art of character development and true emotional resilience. We talk about the rise in narcissistic messaging, the erosion of empathy, and the importance of being grounded in truth, morality, and meaningful relationships.

You’ll hear Rose share her journey from struggling with emotional regulation and borderline personality disorder to living a grounded, spiritually-centered life. She brings so much wisdom to the table, especially for teens and young adults who are seeking something more than what mainstream culture is offering. We also touch on parenting, the role of fathers, social media for teens, and how to help the next generation grow into people of strong character.

This one’s for anyone who’s tired of shallow self-help advice and is ready for a deeper, more meaningful path to mental wellness.

The conversation also critically examines why traditional therapies like CBT and psychodynamic therapy may not be as effective in treating OCD, providing insights into the unique challenges posed by the disorder and the necessity for specialized treatment approaches.

This episode not only broadens your understanding of OCD but also qualifies for one continuing education contact hour. To purchase the course and earn your credit, please visit www.lisamustard.com/podcourses.

06 Nov 2024Therapy for High-Achieving Clients: How to Support Wealthy and Driven Individuals with Ryan Forbes, LPC | counseling wealthy clients | therapy for executives | athletes | marketing private practice00:29:55

In this episode of The Therapy Show, I’m thrilled to chat with therapist Ryan Forbes, who brings a unique perspective on working with high-achieving clients.

Yung Sidekick, an automated note-taker for therapists, is offering a special promotion for listeners! Use the code LISA20 to get 20% off your first purchase with Yung-Sidekick.

Here are some of the key points we dive into:

  • Understanding High-Driven Clients: Ryan shares what he’s learned about the unique challenges faced by wealthy, high-achieving clients—like confidentiality concerns, fear of failure, and the drive to always maintain success.
  • Unique Therapeutic Needs: Many of these clients feel isolated and struggle to find safe spaces for personal issues since most of their relationships are work-related. Ryan emphasizes that confidentiality is crucial in building trust with this demographic.
  • Therapist Bias: We discuss how therapists may unintentionally bring biases into sessions with wealthy clients, often because these clients don’t fit into typical therapeutic frameworks. Ryan shares ways to overcome these biases to better serve this group.
  • Scheduling Flexibility: For clients with intense, unpredictable schedules, Ryan explains the importance of adapting therapy hours to meet their needs, even if it means unconventional session times.
  • Premium Pricing Strategy: Ryan explains why it’s essential for therapists to consider premium pricing when working with high-net-worth clients, as they often gauge value based on the level of investment.
  • Marketing to a Niche: We talk about Ryan’s new course, The Pursuit of Success: Counseling Highly Driven/Highly Successful Clients with Confidence, which teaches therapists how to reach this unique clientele with effective marketing strategies and business insights.

This episode is packed with insights for therapists interested in serving high-performing clients.

Plus, you can earn 1.5 continuing education contact hours by taking Ryan’s self-study course, which covers both the therapeutic techniques and business strategies needed to succeed in this niche.

Today, I have a truly special guest. An award-winning author, a captivating speaker, a dedicated teacher, and a sought-after consultant, Dr. Avrum Weiss has left an indelible mark on the world of psychotherapy. Nationally celebrated for his pioneering efforts in experiential psychotherapy and his revolutionary insights into the theory of change, Dr. Weiss has not only shaped the field but has also mentored hundreds, introducing them to a more personal, relational model of psychotherapy.

11 Sep 2019How to Move Through Burnout and Compassion Fatigue with Sherry Collier00:37:26

Today's episode is dedicated my talk therapists friends who have experienced or are experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue. (This is a topic I know too well as I hit it about 18 months ago.)

05 Apr 2023Exploring the Four C's Self Care Model for Women Mental Health Clinicians with Dr. Karen Dyck and Dr. Melissa Tiessen00:36:28

In this week's episode I interview Dr. Karen Dyck and Dr. Melissa Tiessen, two mid-career psychologists working in private practice. They founded Intentional Therapists out of a recognition that self-care is incredibly important for mental health clinicians, yet they receive little to no training in this area. The mission of Intentional Therapists is to help female mental health clinicians thrive in their professional roles and normalize self-care in all its forms. During the episode, Karen and Melissa discuss the four C's of their self-care model and how it can help female mental health clinicians move from surviving to thriving in their work and life.

Is overprotection making kids more anxious? In this episode of The Therapy Show: Just Therapy Series, I sit down with Dr. Seth Scott to explore how risk-taking, resilience, and digital culture shape today’s children. We discuss why overprotecting kids can actually make them more anxious, how social media fuels fear and insecurity, and what parents can do to raise confident, independent children in an age of screens and safety labels.

Dr. Scott shares insights from The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, as well as research on anti-fragile parenting and the importance of real-world experiences in child development. If you’ve ever wondered how to help your kids navigate anxiety, build resilience, and thrive in today’s fast-paced world, this episode is for you.

Key Topics Covered:

✔️ How risk-taking helps kids develop confidence
✔️ Why overprotection leads to increased anxiety
✔️ The impact of social media on childhood mental health
✔️ What parents can do to help kids become more resilient
