Dear Pastor Joel, my church says it’s legalistic to put standards on how to dress at church, but at the same time, their standard is a one piece bathing suit at the beach. What are your thoughts on this stance? Also, what are your thoughts about modesty in general?

America is getting unhealthier every year. This is because paganism dominates our thinking and its fruit is death and impotence. This was clearly on display in the Covid pandemic as the medical system rejected health and healing in favor of terror and tyrannical control. Christians also bear much blame in this area as we also have become complacent, fat, and unhealthy. We must reclaim God’s purpose for health and healing, which is to restore and preserve proper function to our minds and bodies so that we can fulfill the mandates that God has given to us. Joshua was likely tempted to use the Canaanites' weapons against them, but God would not have it. What if I told you that most modern Christians have completely missed one of God’s most foundational purposes for mankind? Not just missed it—forgotten it, ignored it, and in many cases, even denied it.

We’re not talking about something minor here. We’re talking about why God created the world in the first place, what He expects humanity to do with it, and—crucially—how He intends for us to do it.

Here’s the claim: God created nations—distinct peoples in distinct lands—for the express purpose of stewarding the earth. Nations are not an accident of history or a necessary evil in a fallen world. They are the fundamental unit of dominion. And yet, most churches today act as if nations are at best irrelevant—and at worst, idolatrous.

“Creation care”? That’s the buzzword today. But much of what goes under that banner is just baptized globalism and soft environmentalism. It’s stewardship without dominion. Guilt without glory. Conservation without cultivation. It replaces national duty with personal shame and trades biblical fruitfulness for bureaucratic minimalism.

Meanwhile, we live in an age when our greatest national achievements no longer bring glory to God, but glory to man. The Mayflower Compact was a covenant for Christ. The moon landing was a monument to mankind. Somewhere along the way, we stopped building towers for God and started building Babels for ourselves.

Pastor Joel Webbon provides one of the clearest signs to indicate whether or not a person is a real Christian, regardless of their profession.

The world seems to have a million different definitions of love, but what is true biblical love according to God’s definition?

Joshua instructs his men to enclose the five Amorite kings in a cave by covering the entrance with heavy stones. These kings went into the tomb alive, and were later brought out in order to be put to death. The King of kings was dead when he was laid in his tomb, only to emerge alive forevermore.

It is true, Jesus did not accept Satan’s offer to GIVE him the kingdoms of this world. Is this because Jesus isn’t interested in the kingdoms of this world? No. It’s because Jesus intended to TAKE the kingdoms of this world from Satan, and indeed, he has.

There are so many strong opinions in regards to the style of our worship in the church today. We are so concerned with how our worship will be received by the members and visitors of our church that week however, our first concern should be whether or not our worship is pleasing to God.

In this episode of Theology Applied, Pastor Joel Webbon and his guest, Justin Peters, provide three simple reasons for why churches should not use Bethel and Hillsong music in their worship services. This is the second part of a two part series.

Each text of Scripture has only one faithful interpretation. It doesn’t matter what a particular Bible verse means to you. It matters what that particular verse means to God.

What do you do with your guilt? There are only three options: 1) You write a new narrative for your life that constantly makes you an innocent victim surrounded by toxic people, 2) You acknowledge your guilt and sit underneath its crushing weight, 3) You trust in Christ as the one who bore your guilt.

The Christian life is a fight. We were not born in a time of peace, but a time of war. The question is, who are we fighting and how can we fight well?

God sent revival to Nineveh, yet the Prophet Jonah was bitter. Similarly, if God chose to start saving a bunch of hillbillies in flyover country, Russell Moore and David French would probably be among the first to complain.

Psalm 37:6 provides  a wonderful promise: “[God] will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” In other words, those who act with integrity will eventually be vindicated, in this life or the next. Their righteousness will be revealed before both God and men. Therefore, we must diligently obey as we wait upon the Lord. This commandment is stated a final time in Psalm 37:7: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!”

Just as everyone is not fit to reprove (Galatians 6:1), not every one is fit to be reproved (Matthew 7:6). It is not only permissible, but even commanded, that we minister to the wicked. Jesus himself was called the friend of sinners. And yet, Christ clearly instructed his disciples not to preach the gospel to those who were obstinate after the gospel had already been preached to them. Our evangelistic efforts should not be wasted on those who blaspheme the gospel and persecute those who preach it. Instead, we are commanded to turn our efforts towards others (Acts 13:41).

The Bible teaches that suffering is the slave of every true believer, sent by God to produce spiritual wealth for those who choose to suffer well.

And John Knox, in keeping with the scripture, is exactly right. To promote women to rule as Senators, Presidents, lawyers, generals, and CEO’s isn’t an “agree to disagree” issue, it erodes the bedrock of stability and good order that is necessary for flourishing societies and cannot be tolerated. Nowhere is the truth of Knox’s warning more visibly on display than in today’s “conservative” “Christian” women in leadership. Take Kristan Hawkins, an “anti-abortion” activist and president of Students for Life of America for example. Here’s a woman who has spent her life as a “conservative” in public service defending the unborn. But under just a little bit of scrutiny we discovered this week that she’s a mother who is daily abandoning her own sick and dying children while living high on the hog off a $300k salary from donations. Then, when an abolition bill finally made it to the North Dakota Legislature, Ms. Hawkins and Students for Life vociferously OPPOSED equal protection for unborn children. Some doctrines are twisted from Scripture, others are fabricated out of thin air.

The Church desperately needs Christians to make more judgments, not less.

R. C. Sproul preached a sermon called “The Tyranny of the Weaker Brother.” His premise comes from Romans 14. He talks about how the church should welcome the weaker brother into membership with grace, but he warns of the weaker brother’s tendency to be a tyrant towards the rest of the body. The weaker brother, due to his weaker faith and underdeveloped conscience, has a bad habit of adding the traditions of men to the laws of God. Unfortunately, he often does not do this merely for himself but for others. For example, the weaker brother will frequently insist that their fellow church members (and especially their pastor) not drink alcohol, even though Scripture permits the righteous enjoyment of alcohol to the glory of God. And yet, churches should welcome the weaker brother into membership, and be willing in certain contexts to lay down their liberties in order to avoid becoming a stumbling block for him. But should the church welcome the weaker brother as their pastor? If the Apostle Paul labels the one whose conscience is wrongfully bound by man-made traditions as objectively “weaker,” should this individual be in a position of authority over those who are objectively “stronger.” Clearly, Paul’s point has to do with faith. Therefore, the weaker brother is not merely “weaker” in some kind of abstract way. Rather, in accordance with Scripture, the weaker brother possesses less faith than his other brothers and sisters in Christ. Such a man should be graciously welcomed into the church. But is there not a serious problem, when the church is led by those with the least amount of faith? In these cases, by virtue of both the individual’s person and position, the church becomes a context for mass tyranny. Man-made traditions become church wide “requirements” that everyone is commanded to follow, despite Christ having purchased freedom from such traditions by the costly price of his own blood. Is there currently a national (and even global) “epidemic” of weaker brothers filling our churches’ pulpits. Wearing a mask is not a law of God, and yet, many of our puny-faith pastors have wrongfully bound the consciences of all their congregants in this regard. The same can be said of pastors requiring vaccines for worship, or segregating the people of God according to vaccination status. Possessing a conscience that is so poorly shaped is not a disqualification for salvation (membership in Christ’s church), but should it be a disqualification for eldership? Would not the Apostle Paul expect the office of elder to be filled by stronger brothers? The past couple years have appeared to prove that a vast number of Evangelical churches are being led by the weakest among us, according to clear biblical standards. God is exceedingly gracious in the order in which he arranges the battles of our lives. Too often we convince ourselves that we must fight our biggest giants first, when God would have us fight them last. Perhaps, the clearest example of this is the Christians’ final battle with his own death.

Scripture says we will be saved “if we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord.” But what about those who cannot speak?

Jericho could not put its trust in the courage of its people to take the offensive, so it trusted in the strength of its walls to provide a sturdy defense. Even in the midst of terror, Jericho placed trust in itself, not the Lord. And so Jericho was “shut up.” It did not possess the courage to deploy an attack, but neither did it possess the humility to offer surrender. None went out from the walls to offer a treatise of peace with the armies of Yahweh. In one sense, their hearts were melted like wax with fear, but in another sense their hearts were hardened to their own destruction. So is the miserable state of all those that strengthen themselves against the hand of the Almighty.

Remember Christian, all truth is God’s truth. Yes, there was a lot of garbage I had to unlearn when I left the “Gospel-Centered Cult.” Nonetheless, I’ll never let go is this one principle.

If you do not have Christ as your Savior, you do not have God as your Father.

Can those who commit to practical obedience to Christ’s commandments expect to receive a blessing from God in this life? If so, is this blessing a guarantee? What about those who experience suffering and/or are persecuted for their faithfulness?

Should a faithful pastor err on the side of warning his congregation that they might not be saved? Or assuring his congregation that they possess eternal security?

Some biblical scholars and theologians think that Achan's sons and daughters were “brought out” only to be the spectators of their father's punishment, but most conclude that they were also put to death along with their father. God commanded that magistrates should not put the children to death for the sins of the fathers, but God did not intend to bind himself by this law. Therefore, God could justly command the execution of a whole household by divine credence. That said, it is entirely possible (and even likely) that Achan's sons and daughters aided and abetted their father in his sin.

There is one particular sin that Christians are notorious for many excuses for.

 Is there really no such thing as a “Carnal Christian”? And if so, how should we properly define a “Carnal Christian”?

Not everyone is a child of God.

Romans 1:24-32 is clear, when a society willfully chooses to reject God’s truth in exchange for the lie, as well as reject God’s glory in exchange for the glory of the creature, God promises to hand them over to their sins and the horrible consequences which will inevitably follow. Romans 1:18 assures us that God has clearly revealed himself to all people, both by his creation and his just wrath toward sinners. So in Romans 1:24-32, the Apostle Paul is merely demonstrating precisely how the wrath of God is revealed. One clear demonstration of the wrath of God is God’s choice to hand sinners over to their own lusts, so that they might receive the “due penalty” for their sin (the natural consequences of sin). In other words, sin is its own punishment (not the only/ultimate punishment).

Christ is the antitype of the ark. He is the only way to the heavenly Canaan. The way to glory through the Jordan River (a type of death) is an untrodden and trackless path. All men must eventually go through the river of death, but only once. And those who pass through it have never gone that way before.

“For it was of the Lord to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the Lord commanded Moses.” Joshua 11:20

The recent documentary, “Hillsong: A Mega Church Exposed,” utterly fails in its attempt to bring God’s true judgment to charlatans such as Brian Houston and Carl Lentz. This is because pagans are not fit to execute just judgments regarding spiritual matters.

“When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church?”‭‭

“If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.” 1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:35‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The Bible seems to indicate that women should reserve their theological questions for their husbands. If so, how far should this principle be applied?

Jesus does not condemn all vow-taking, but he certainly condemns being swept up in the moment and making a foolish vow.

For the better part of 2,000 years the question of who gets to interpret scripture has been the key challenge to the church. The answer to questions of faith, doctrine, and praxis often depend on the interpretation (and application) of a particular text or passage of scripture and have historically resulted in fierce disagreement. In the face of this uncertainty a variety of new institutions and movements, often cults, have sprung up in the last several hundred years claiming divine authority to interpret scripture, either by virtue of a supposedly restored Apostolic succession or some form of continuity with the early church. The Mormon church claims their “quorum of the twelve apostles” is the restored priesthood of Christ on earth. Jehovah’s witnesses assert that 1st-century Biblical Christianity was restored through the New World Translation of the Bible and the Watchtower and Tract Society in Philadelphia. And in recent years in the West an old authority is seeing renewed interest and conversions: the Eastern Orthodox Church, which claims to be the one true Church and to alone possess the authority to interpret scripture. But does their claim of direct continuity with Apostolic and early church practice hold up to scrutiny? Tune in now as we discuss.
