17 Jul 2019 | Stephen Bush event: making it in political journalism | 01:13:31
New Statesman political editor Stephen Bush talks to Young Fabian national executive committee member Stella Tsantekidou about how to make a career as a UK political journalist. Having previously worked at the Telegraph, and with a brief stint at an (impossibly under-frequented) London bookshop, Stephen talks candidly of his experiences, skills and lack thereof. The talk is followed by a Q&A with Young Fabian members who ask probing questions to the man who first predicted Corbyn's leadership election. Fascinating stuff. Please follow Stephen Bush at @stephenkb on Twitter, in the New Statesman https://www.newstatesman.com/writers/stephen_bush , and in the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/profile/stephen-bush Stella Tsantekidou has been an elected member of the Young Fabians national executive committee since 2018, in the role of Parliamentary Liaison Officer. With her usual plainspokenness and wit, she answers questions on her upbringing, changing legislation, getting in the comedy circuit, and whether Miliband is a badger. 03 Sep 2019 | Britain's Puzzlingly Poor Productivity | 01:35:22
'The only way to have your cake and eat it is to keep growing the cake’. Since the great recession in 2008, the UK’s productivity growth, especially labour productivity, has been weaker than in many other OECD countries. So much so that the gap between actual and pre-crisis outputs was nearly 20% lower per hour at the end of 2016 than in the previous decade. The panellists will be discussing their views on this and the interventions they think could boost performance ten years after the crash. This will include a deep dive into the drivers of productivity, potential labour and investment policies and how businesses can train and invest in their workforce. The event was recorded on June 13th at Fabian HQ. We will be posting the recordings of the Book Club weekly for the next month, and then start our new strand in collaboration with the YF International Network. 23 Dec 2019 | Environment Network Pamphlet + Ways to Save the World | 01:17:31
Now that the election is over, we turn our attention to… the climate emergency. The speakers, chaired by Mhairi, explained what Labour is doing on environmental policy locally, and what it aims to do nationally. This was in the context of presenting the Environment Network’s Pamphlet ‘Ways to Save the World’. It’s a collection of 14 chapters on various economic, political and social issues we need to tackle if we want to create a sustainable environment for the next generation. We spoke about the importance of gender parity within Parliament and what measures organisations such as 50:50 Parliament are doing to achieve this. We also discussed the need for more female leaders and visual representations of powerful women towards dismantling the obstacles women face when running for office.

The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is often been referred to as Europe's last dictator. But could this all be about to change? Earlier this month, Belarus held a presidential election which it was announced that Lukashenko, who has ruled the nation undemocratically since 1994, had once again won with a huge majority. From then until now, Belarusians have taken to the streets in their masses through protests, rallies and worker strikes, on an unprecedented scale, calling for Lukashenko's resignation.

22 Oct 2020 | Interview w/ Shadow Education Secretary, Kate Green MP | 00:34:42
For the past 10 years, consecutive governments have certainly not made life any easier for young people. From the hike in tuition costs and removal of maintenance grants to the funding cuts for schools and rising class numbers, the list goes on. However, in recent months, the government has been so clearly ineffective and incompetent in their inability to provide the basic support that school children, students and the whole education sector deserves throughout this crisis.
30 Oct 2020 | The North-South Divide | 00:37:30
The North of England has been disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Having the highest amount of cases and deaths in the country has led to strict lockdown restrictions for months on end, understandably causing tensions in the North to grow. However, last week another sharp blow was delivered by the government to Andy Burnham and the people of Greater Manchester through an insufficient amount of funding to support the area and reverse the damage that Tier 3 will bring to the area.

19 Nov 2020 | The War Against the BBC w/ Patrick Barwise | 00:52:15
The BBC is undeniably one of Britains greatest cultural institutions, having produced some of the greatest shows and services of all time. However, having experienced extreme funding cuts within the past 10 years and faced with a government who actively want to dismantle it, it is in peril. Many hostile forces have risen against the BBC, with recent calls to #DefundTheBBC and the claims that it is no longer fit for purpose and cannot rival the new subscriptions giants Netflix or Amazon Prime, many people (overwhelmingly from the right) are calling for an end to the license fee and for the BBC to find other funding avenues. Not to mention the huge debate around the supposed impartiality of the BBC, with attacks from the right claiming it is too left-wing, liberal and woke - to some on the left calling it a mouthpiece for the establishment. 'The War Against the BBC' looks into many of the threats the BBC is facing, it debunks common myths and attacks against the BBC, the dangers of introducing advertising or a subscription-based service to the BBC and makes the case on so many fronts for why it’s so important for us to protect the BBC and the license fee. I spoke to Patrick Barwise earlier this week for a discussion about his book and all of these different aspects!

Last month's local elections left much to be desired for many Labour Party members, particularly those in the West Midlands. From many Labour Councillors across the region losing their seats to Liam Byrne's unfortunate loss in the Mayoral race - it's hard to imagine much to feel hopeful about. However, over in Earlsdon, a leafy ward in the suburbs of Coventry, Anthony Tucker gained a council seat from the Conservatives to complete a set of three Labour councillors for the ward; an historic first for Earlsdon!
