09 Jul 2019Intro Episode: so what is the Fabian Society?00:31:49

Like debating, and good policy chat? We thought so.

Welcome to the Young Fabians, the under-31s section of the Fabian Society, a progressive think tank and founding organisation of the Labour party. For our intro episode we're joined by Andrew Harrop, the general secretary of the Fabians, and Charlotte Norton, the current chair of the Young Fabians. They explain policy research, events, socials and, crucially, the boat party. The chat is moderated by producer Carolina Saludes (who doesn't introduce herself because we're all on a steep learning curve) and brought to you by the Young Fabians.

17 Jul 2019Stephen Bush event: making it in political journalism01:13:31

New Statesman political editor Stephen Bush talks to Young Fabian national executive committee member Stella Tsantekidou about how to make a career as a UK political journalist. Having previously worked at the Telegraph, and with a brief stint at an (impossibly under-frequented) London bookshop, Stephen talks candidly of his experiences, skills and lack thereof. The talk is followed by a Q&A with Young Fabian members who ask probing questions to the man who first predicted Corbyn's leadership election. Fascinating stuff.

Please follow Stephen Bush at @stephenkb on Twitter, in the New Statesman https://www.newstatesman.com/writers/stephen_bush , and in the Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/profile/stephen-bush

Stella Tsantekidou has been an elected member of the Young Fabians national executive committee since 2018, in the role of Parliamentary Liaison Officer. She's a parliamentary assistant for shadow cabinet minister Jon Trickett MP. You can find her on Twitter @Stsantek

25 Aug 2019Ayesha Hazarika in conversation01:13:48

The BAME group presents this informal conversation and Q&A with author, political advisor and comedian Ayesha Hazarika. Former civil servant, spad to Ed Miliband and chief-of-staff to Harriet Harman, Hazarika gives an account of her career in politics and standup through the eyes of a ‘gobby’ working class BAME woman from Glasgow. With her usual plainspokenness and wit, she answers questions on her upbringing, changing legislation, getting in the comedy circuit, and whether Miliband is a badger.

03 Sep 2019Britain's Puzzlingly Poor Productivity01:35:22

'The only way to have your cake and eat it is to keep growing the cake’.

Listen to this fascinating panel from the YF Economy and Finance network on Britain’s productivity, as part of their ‘A Decade Since the Great Recession’ series.

Since the great recession in 2008, the UK’s productivity growth, especially labour productivity, has been weaker than in many other OECD countries. So much so that the gap between actual and pre-crisis outputs was nearly 20% lower per hour at the end of 2016 than in the previous decade. The panellists will be discussing their views on this and the interventions they think could boost performance ten years after the crash. This will include a deep dive into the drivers of productivity, potential labour and investment policies and how businesses can train and invest in their workforce.

The event was recorded on June 13th at Fabian HQ.

Guests:

John Heap, Managing Director, Institute of Productivity
Dr. Anna Valero, ESRC Innovation Fellow - Growth, LSE
Hubert Wu, Behavioural Insights Team
Marion Mayer, Economy & Finance Network Events Officer (chair)

12 Sep 2019Book Club: Lonely Londoners and why Victoria won't lend you a tenner00:28:50

The Arts + Culture Network presents the Young Fabians Book Club, which so far this year has been dealing with the topic of ‘migration’. Dan Wood (Book Club coordinator), Carolina Saludes (YF podcast producer) and Victoria Parrett (Book Club enthusiast and general top sport) discuss Sam Selvon’s classic 1956 short novel about the tribulations of young Caribbean men in post-war London, from the name to the peculiar obsession with expensive suits. We will also find out how the book relates to contemporary London, and why, frankly, Victoria just won’t lend you a tenner.

We will be posting the recordings of the Book Club weekly for the next month, and then start our new strand in collaboration with the YF International Network.

22 Sep 2019Conference Special- Labour's case for the NHS00:50:00

22 Sep 2019Conference Special - Day 1 explained (from the Hilton bar)00:21:23

Day 1's come and gone, and a select group of Young Fabians have told us their fringe highlights, the latest gossip and even some policy announcements (not really). Join Mark, Helen, Jen, Mhairi, Lucy and Carolina while they go through the best fringe snacks, Ken Loach appearances, the abolition of Parliamentary democracy and Len McCluskey's lunch.

We recorded this on our phone at the Conference Hotel bar, so the sound quality is, well, not great.

19 Dec 2019General Election Debrief + Richard Burgon cookies01:36:05

Well that happened... After a weekend of shock, sadness and mince pies, the podcast team is back with all the stats and takes from election night, plus one or two suggestions for our next Labour leader.

Join Jeevun, Victoria, Blaze, Matt, Mark and Carolina as they talk through the stories of the campaign, party strategy, the leadership contest, and what we can do to start winning again. Plus Victoria made cookies and it all got a bit out of hand (more on that on our Twitter page)

Apologies to our listeners in Scotland and Wales, as this was a very England-centric episode, but we’ll be back with more representative takes in the near future.

The best bit (and bit that we mean gaffe) of the podcast is right at the end, so stick with it.

23 Dec 2019Environment Network Pamphlet + Ways to Save the World01:17:31

Now that the election is over, we turn our attention to… the climate emergency. But, before you switch off in despair and go drink mulled wine, we encourage you to listen to this engaging (and at times heated!) discussion that took place at Labour Conference in September.

The speakers, chaired by Mhairi, explained what Labour is doing on environmental policy locally, and what it aims to do nationally. This was in the context of presenting the Environment Network’s Pamphlet ‘Ways to Save the World’. It’s a collection of 14 chapters on various economic, political and social issues we need to tackle if we want to create a sustainable environment for the next generation.

You can read the pamphlet in full here

Speakers:

Philip Glanville, Mayor Hackney

David Elliott, Chief Executive, Trees for Cities

Leonie Cooper, London Assembly Member

Chris Saltmarsh, Labour for A Green New Deal

01 Mar 2020Losing (and winning back) the North of England01:15:00

Joining the podcast are Young Fabians Milo Barnett, Isaac Hanson, Tom Platter and producer Carolina Saludes. We had two fantastic female colleagues due to join who had to cancel last minute, so please don’t send us angry messages.

06 Mar 2020Democratic US Primary Special: Biden puns and Bernie followers01:25:53

The world is going to hell in a handcart, but in the middle of that a bunch of democrat politicians in the US are fighting for control of the steering wheel. The team discuss in detail how Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders could win or lose the nomination, what happened to Warren, where did Bloomberg’s millions in ads go, and why Pete can’t use his McKinsey slides to win elections. Joining us are Redha Rubaie, Carolina Saludes, Gregory Gillette, Nick Trickett, Hunter Christopher (a volunteer in the Sanders campaign), Jesse Coleman and Kyalo Burt-Fulcher. It’s packed full of nerdy detail and high level explanations of the race, so whether you’re new or a seasoned follower of American elections, this one’s well worth listening to.

12 Mar 2020Spring Budget Special + Kyalo goes crazy with the Pensions taper01:20:07

Rishi Sunak had his maiden budget speech yesterday, and of course we had to get together and do some appropriately Fabian analysis on it. Led by YF and economist Jeevun Sandher and Pensions Actuary Kyalo Burt-Fulcher, they discussed the headline spend pledges, measures to fight Covid-19, some of Dominic Cummings’pet projects (Maths Academies anyone?) and what it all means in the current political climate. Plus that Corbyn speech. They’re joined by producer Carolina Saludes, and YF and musician Tom Platter.

Victoria Parrett, chair of the Arts and Culture Network at the Young Fabians and Gender Studies graduate from LSE, interviews lawyer and activist Deeba Syed. Deeba, who is herself an ex-Young Fabians executive committee member, and a lawyer specialising in sexual harassment, comes on the Pod to talk about what made her want to dedicate her life to women’s rights at work, how she became a lawyer, and her groundbreaking work with Rights of Women. After the #metoo movement, the Harvey Weinstein trial and the Alex Salmond trial, this conversation couldn’t me more prescient, even during the lockdown.

25 May 2020Interview with Thangam Debbonaire, Shadow Secretary of State for Housing00:56:11

On May 14th, Labour Housing Group and the Young Fabians interviewed Thangam Debbonaire MP, Labour's new Shadow Secretary of State for Housing. They talked about how Labour can tackle the housing crisis and homelessness in the 2020s - whether from community halls, council chambers or Whitehall offices. The talk was then picked up by LabourList, sparking debate about whether the ‘cancel-rent’ policy should be taken up by the Party.

29 May 2020Cummings-gate, Covid-19, Brexit + How Labour should respond01:07:48

Podcast regulars Carolina Saludes, Redha Rubaie and Mark McVitie are joined by political and public policy strategist Kendall Aitcliffe to break down the Dominic Cummings scandal that gripped the UK last weekend. Will Boris Johnson be able to shake off the bad publicity from Dom’s behaviour? Can the Government be taken seriously after its most senior advisor ignored the rules to travel half way round the country with Covid? Will we ever be able to look at Barnard Castle without mentioning Spec Savers?

We also discuss Labour’s response to the scandal, more widely to the Covid-19 crisis, the appointment of David Evans as new General Secretary, and how they have to position themselves to win.

This episode was recorded Thursday 28th May, before further allegations from the police about whether Cummings’ conduct broke lockdown rules. The plot thickens...

06 Jun 2020The murder of George Floyd + A way forward against racial inequality01:08:12

This week, as we all look on, horrified, at police brutality in the US, we discuss racial inequalities in the UK, in the Labour Party and in all aspects of our lives. What, if anything, can we do about it politically and policy-wise? Joining the podcast are Lewis Iwu, CEO and co-founder of Prospect Union; Leon Alleyne-McLaughlin, Young Fabians secretary and co-founder of the YF BAME advocacy group; and Redha Rubaie and Mark McVitie, podcast regulars. Moderating is producer Carolina Saludes.

12 Jun 2020Playwright James Graham + the future of theatre01:34:19

Last week we were lucky enough to interview playwright James Graham, best known for Quiz, This House, Labour of Love and of course Brexit: an uncivil war. We asked him about his early years as a Midlands-born, working class writer in London, his motivation for trying to find empathy in the most controversial public figures (eg Rupert Murdoch or Dominic Cummings) and a little musical he’s developing with 'up-and-coming' artist Elton John. We also talked to him about systemic lack of representation and discrimination in theatre, what Government interventions need to happen right now to ensure the survival of theatre in the UK, and the role that the streamers should play in guaranteeing that future.

We’ve included the full Q&A, in which James details his encounters with Cummings, why he works in the early morning, and

31 Aug 2020What's happening in Belarus?00:57:52

The president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is often been referred to as Europe's last dictator. But could this all be about to change? Earlier this month, Belarus held a presidential election which it was announced that Lukashenko, who has ruled the nation undemocratically since 1994, had once again won with a huge majority. From then until now, Belarusians have taken to the streets in their masses through protests, rallies and worker strikes, on an unprecedented scale, calling for Lukashenko's resignation.

In today's episode, I'm joined by Nelly Bekus, Associate Lecturer at the University of Exeter, Ihar Barysau, the Chair of the Belarus Social Democratic Party (Hramada), and Ido Vock, International Correspondent at the New Statesman, to get more of an insight into the situation.

22 Oct 2020Interview w/ Shadow Education Secretary, Kate Green MP00:34:42

For the past 10 years, consecutive governments have certainly not made life any easier for young people.  From the hike in tuition costs and removal of maintenance grants to the funding cuts for schools and rising class numbers, the list goes on. However, in recent months, the government has been so clearly ineffective and incompetent in their inability to provide the basic support that school children, students and the whole education sector deserves throughout this crisis.

In this week's episode, I'm joined by Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston and Shadow Secretary of State for Education, to discuss the ways which consecutive governments have failed young people and the education sector, as well as throughout the pandemic and what the Labour Party's vision for education reform looks like.

We also talked about Kate's work in tackling child poverty and social and educational inequalities prior to becoming an MP, as well as her experience within the Fabian Society, of which she is a member of the Executive Committee and former Chair!

30 Oct 2020The North-South Divide00:37:30

The North of England has been disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Having the highest amount of cases and deaths in the country has led to strict lockdown restrictions for months on end, understandably causing tensions in the North to grow. However, last week another sharp blow was delivered by the government to Andy Burnham and the people of Greater Manchester through an insufficient amount of funding to support the area and reverse the damage that Tier 3 will bring to the area.

It's worth remembering that Boris Johnson, in his first speech as Prime Minister, made clear that he would not take the support from the 'red wall' for granted and expressed his intent to 'level up' the North, but so far it's been quite the opposite, with more attention and support being afforded to London and parts of the North feeling dejected and forgotten.

The North-South divide is a very real thing which more than ever represents deep inequality and growing disillusionment - with the Covid crisis exposing the many gaps between the two sides of England.

This week I'm joined by three fellow Young Fabians: Donya Jeyabalasingham, Amy Dwyer and Tom Laing for a chat about all of these different factors behind the exacerbation of the North-South Divide in recent months.

This year's events have brought many conversations regarding Black issues to the forefront. With the BLM protests sparking discussions about police brutality and racial profiling; Coronavirus exposing the deep, existing inequalities against Black people in the UK; and the first Black History Month debate in Parliament in 5 years, addressing the growing calls to decolonise the school curriculum and make UK education more representative of BAME history.

19 Nov 2020The War Against the BBC w/ Patrick Barwise00:52:15

The BBC is undeniably one of Britains greatest cultural institutions, having produced some of the greatest shows and services of all time. However, having experienced extreme funding cuts within the past 10 years and faced with a government who actively want to dismantle it, it is in peril. Many hostile forces have risen against the BBC, with recent calls to #DefundTheBBC and the claims that it is no longer fit for purpose and cannot rival the new subscriptions giants Netflix or Amazon Prime, many people (overwhelmingly from the right) are calling for an end to the license fee and for the BBC to find other funding avenues.

Not to mention the huge debate around the supposed impartiality of the BBC, with attacks from the right claiming it is too left-wing, liberal and woke - to some on the left calling it a mouthpiece for the establishment.

In today’s episode, I am joined by Patrick Barwise, Emeritus Professor in Management and Marketing at London Business School, former chairman of consumer organisation Which? and co-author, alongside Peter York, of the book 'The War Against the BBC'.

'The War Against the BBC' looks into many of the threats the BBC is facing, it debunks common myths and attacks against the BBC, the dangers of introducing advertising or a subscription-based service to the BBC and makes the case on so many fronts for why it’s so important for us to protect the BBC and the license fee.

I spoke to Patrick Barwise earlier this week for a discussion about his book and all of these different aspects!

08 Mar 2021Gender Equality in the Curriculum00:36:36

For our first episode in our International Women's Day series on the theme #choosetochallenge, we discuss the importance of embedding gender equality in our schools and our education system and ideas for how to achieve this.

Our discussion focused on three key ideas: Introducing gender equality into the curriculum implicitly by addressing the gender data gap; To explicitly challenge gender inequality and everyday sexism, and to embed specific/explicit gender equality education into the curriculum with the aim to stop making feminism a ‘dirty’ word.

This episode idea was suggested to us by YF member Katharine Roddy as part of our IWD series. Over the next two weeks, we will be releasing many episodes centred around the theme #choosetochallenge.

09 Apr 2021Scottish Labour: The Road to Holyrood00:51:36

With the Scottish Parliament elections fast approaching,  we are joined by Albie, Cecily, and John from the Young Scottish Fabians to discuss all things Scottish Labour and what their path to success will look like in Scotland's everchanging political landscape.

We talked about new leader Anas Sarwar's first few weeks in charge of Scottish Labour, the challenges he faces leading up to the election on May 6th, what their communications and campaign strategy has been like so far and what more they could do, as well as Labour's idea for a  'National Recovery Plan'.

Of course, we couldn't avoid the recent political theatrics within Scottish politics, discussing the Holyrood Inquiry, the emergence of Alex Salmond's Alba Party, the ebb and flow of Independence polling and what this all means for Labour, The Union, and Scotland itself.

In the latest installment of our series focusing on winning back heartlands within the West Midlands, we travel (virtually) up to Stoke-on-Trent to speak with Gareth Snell, the former Labour MP for the constituency from 2017-2019!

25 Jun 2021Historic Labour GAIN in Earlsdon ft. Cllr Anthony Tucker00:24:30

Last month's local elections left much to be desired for many Labour Party members, particularly those in the West Midlands.  From many Labour Councillors across the region losing their seats to Liam Byrne's unfortunate loss in the Mayoral race - it's hard to imagine much to feel hopeful about. However, over in Earlsdon, a leafy ward in the suburbs of Coventry, Anthony Tucker gained a council seat from the Conservatives to complete a set of three Labour councillors for the ward; an historic first for Earlsdon!

In this episode, Nathan and Marie from the West Midlands Young Fabians chat with Cllr Anthony Tucker to find out about Earlsdon, what went right in his campaign and what we can learn from it, the importance of young people standing as councillors and much more.
