When you see a professional landscape photo, usually in a gallery, a magazine cover or photobook, there is just something different...it's jumps out to you as "pro level."

In today's episode, I do a deep dive into how you can achieve this same look and vibe in your own photography.  Spoiler alert, there is no shortcut.  But, I do have a roadmap.

I hope you enjoy and get out there and take some extraordinary photos as a result!

13 Feb 2025How Pro Photographers Get Super Sharp Images Every Time00:42:40

Send us a text

Episode Summary:

In this episode of The Wild Photographer, Court Whelan breaks down the essential techniques for getting sharp images in both landscape and wildlife photography. He shares insider tips on shutter speed, aperture, and focusing techniques, plus the real impact of ISO on sharpness. You’ll also learn how to leverage image stabilization, drive mode, and post-processing tools like Topaz Denoise to get crystal-clear shots.

Key Takeaways:

📍 Shutter Speed & Movement: The faster the shutter, the sharper the shot—but how fast depends on your subject’s motion. For wildlife, start at 1/500s for resting animals, 1/1000s for walking animals, and 1/2000s+ for fast-moving subjects like birds in flight.

📍 Aperture & Depth of Field:

  • For landscapes, aim for F8 to F11 to keep everything sharp while avoiding diffraction.
  • For wildlife and portraits, focus on the eyes and adjust your aperture depending on how much of the subject you want in focus.

📍 Focusing for Maximum Sharpness:

  • Hyper-focus: For landscapes, focus 1/3rd into the scene to maximize depth of field.
  • Wildlife & portraits: Always focus on the eyes to make the whole image appear sharper.

📍 Stabilization & Handheld Shooting:

  • Use image stabilization to reduce shake, but remember—it won’t freeze subject motion.
  • Follow the Inverse Focal Length Rule as a baseline for handheld shooting.
  • If using a tripod, add a 2-second delay or a remote shutter to eliminate vibration.

📍 ISO Trade-offs:

  • Lower ISO = better quality, but sometimes you need to crank it up to freeze motion.
  • Be mindful of noise at high ISOs—only use noise reduction software like Topaz Denoise when absolutely necessary, as it can actually reduce sharpness.

📍 Drive Mode for Extra Sharpness:

  • Shooting in burst mode can help—sometimes the 3rd or 4th image in a sequence is sharper because the camera stabilizes after the initial click.

📍 Post-Processing for Sharper Images:

  • Use selective sharpening on key areas like the eyes for a natural, crisp look.
  • Be careful with noise reduction—it can soften details if overused.

Listener Question of the Day:

💡 How do you deal with noise reduction in post-processing?
Court explains when and how to use Topaz Denoise and Lightroom’s noise reduction to clean up high-ISO images without sacrificing too much detail.

Send us a text

If you are ready to take the leap and move away from using the full auto setting on your camera, I commend you.  And you will be happy you did so, because your photos, and your general creativity, will shine!

In this episode I walk you through the various "next steps" if you are ready to move toward greater creative control.  The best part of this is that you do NOT have to immediately jump to Aperture or Manual modes to take the first step.  For instance, P or Program mode is a fantastic way to start experimenting with exposure compensation, white balance, and metering modes.  I'll walk you through all this.  Aperture and shutter speed priority modes add in one more opportunity, to control the depth of field and shutter of your camera.

Finally, I give you my personal style for using manual in a unique way that gets me sharp photos, at the exact depth of field I'm envisioning, with less work and better photos than ever before.

Take that first step and enter a big world of awesome possibilities!

It's one of the more frequent opportunities we have as nature photographers...to capture an awesome sunset or sunrise.  However, there is a big difference between just documenting it and capturing something extraordinary.  And for those times where these solar displays are just mind-blowing, we tend to get lost in the moment and forget the artistry involved.

I've honed these techniques and tips for years and years of photographing sunsets (and sunrises!) from all over the world and am excited to share them with you.  Some are simple...some are a bit more complex, but each will individually level-up your sunset photography.  And when used in conjunction, they come together in a grand formula for getting sensational, and unique, sunrise and sunset photos guaranteed to impress.
