Whether it's chasing animals, or treating people all over the world: Preston is fantastic at what he does. The art of tracking an animal has been called one of the earliest forms of science. The first deductive thinking of our distant ancestors, in search of food.
Together Alex van den Heever and Renias Mhlongo are helping to ensure these ancient techniques survive. Their books about tracking and their very own Tracker Academy continue to enhance tourism and conservation in South Africa — where they both live. While also educating a wider audience about the importance of diversity, the power of relationships in the workplace and how thinking like a tracker is essential for modern businesses all over the world.
Not only are they some of the most skilled trackers in the world, but they also happen to be fantastic story tellers too. Once again a big thank you to Renias and Alex for sharing their time and expertise!

01:47:28
Today we’re excited to introduce two new guests to The Wild Dispatch Podcast.

Creators and owners of West Coast Archery Shop north of San Francisco, together they’ve helped build and support a community of archers, hunters, and likeminded adventure-lovers from the wider area. They’ve also achieved all this while raising a kid, who we should add has successfully chased more big game with a bow than most grown-ups!
Thanks again to Hans and Adrienne for all their great stories, tips, and for continuing to inspire us to get outside with our family!

Dr. Adrian de Villiers goes by many names, but perhaps the most notorious is Dr. Death.
—A nickname coined after becoming the first South African to ever harvest the big 6 on foot, with nothing but a bow and arrows. (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo and hippo)
Despite his ominous title, ‘the Doc’ has been sharing nuggets of wisdom with outdoor enthusiasts for decades. For over thirty years he’s written multiple books and over a thousand articles about hunting in South Africa and around the world. Unsurprisingly this guy has amazing stories and close-calls by the bucket load…

Ep025: The magic of Warthogs and double-bearded turkeys ↣ Robin Warman
01:00:14
Today we're doing things a little different: 'TWD - In The Field' is a shorter format recorded out in the wild, capturing moments, as they happen. The Wild Dispatch will continue to churn out its 'normal programming' but every few weeks one of these experiential nuggets will pop up in the feed.
In this Episode Robin narrates a turkey bow-hunt live, as it happens. Then takes a break to reflect on the first 25 episodes of TWD, the importance of work/life balance, and how much fun it is chasing warthogs in South Africa. Note one story about pursuing a particularly large warthog back in the Eastern Cape who we dubbed Sir. Tuskalot. Video evidence on Instagram.
We'd love your thoughts on this new format. Send us a message on the Insta link below👇

This episode is recorded live, as the action unfolds, on one of many vast ranches in the mountains of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is completely unscripted and unplanned.
Much like many parts of the USA— farmers in South Africa use trained hounds to help control local predator populations. They do this to reduce predation on their far roaming-livestock and new-born animals. Despite this training, hound success rates tend to be low, but help keep the cats and jackals a safer distance. We learned this from two local hound hunters named Themba and Gogo, who we interviewed spontaneously on the side of a mountain. This is their story.
EP:026 Larry Knowles ↣ edible seaweed, spear-fishing & the life aquatic
02:15:21
For decades Larry has been fishing and foraging for the tastiest ocean snacks Northern California has to offer. Not only feeding himself and the people he cares about, but also selling healthy products through his environmentally conscious seaweed snack company — Rising Tide Sea Vegetables.
Larry has a deep understanding of coastal habitats in Northern California. Through his stories we hear the events that shaped his perspective on our place in the eco system, the problems with mass scale food production, and the common misconceptions of human impact. We also learn some tips and tricks on the best way to approach harvesting sea veggies and fish for ourselves.
Thanks again to Larry for sharing his time with us today!
Learn a bunch more info about coastal ecosystems at Bullkelp.info
And you can meet Larry and experience his take on the ocean by visiting the North Coast Kelp Festival on the Mendocino coast between May 18 and June 16. There will also be a huge number of other creative and informative events happening in the area over that 5 week period.

Ep027: Cole Wilks ↣ Arrowing a 900lb antelope on Naked & Afraid (+ other wilderness stories)
02:13:19
Cole Wilks has been putting wild meat on the table (and in the freezer) since he was a kid. Spending months of each year hunting with a bow, it's unsurprising that he's an absolute pro at wilderness survival.
Cole has featured as a coach on Hunt Warz, made the final 22 in Season 7 of Alone, and emerged triumphant from a 21-day challenge in the latest season of Discovery channel's Naked and Afraid. On top of that he runs workshops, online classes, hosts a new podcast and has a successful channel on YouTube. Suffice to say if there's a wilderness flavored pie, Cole's got his finger in it.
The homesteading, veggie growing, fish-slaying artist known as Ejler is back!
Fishing season is just around the corner — not one to hold his cards close to his chest, in this episode Ejler casually throws down a killer-hand of stories and tactics from the ocean. This is hard-earned knowledge from over 40 years spent fishing local waters in a wooden row-boat, designed and constructed by his own fair hand. If you haven’t had the chance to listen to his earlier episodes, then we we highly recommend you circle back and hear the many adventures that made Ejler the man he is today.
A big thanks again to Ejler for being such an open (and entertaining) book!
And thanks to everyone listening. If you want to hear more, then be sure to give The Wild Dispatch a follow/subscribe so you never miss an episode.
If you want to send Ejler a message then the simplest thing to do would be to send me the message on Insta, I’ll call him on his landline and pass it along. Leave a 60s voice message and it might even make its way into a future episode!

EP032: Mountains, muscle & mindset ↣ making it count w/ Dr. Preston Ward
01:27:51
Dr. Preston Ward is back with big news! In EP032 Robin and Preston talk about adventures, successful hunts, unsuccessful hunts, mental health, masculinity and quitting the day job to chase your dreams. Preston also spills his guts about launching the first ever full-bells-and-whistles health app for folks who love the outdoors. And what it's like to specifically create something designed to keep folks strong for the mountains well into their 80's. Thanks again to Preston for another great chat...
EP033: Kielyn Marrone ↣ Surviving Alone for 80 days in sub-arctic winter
02:00:58
When offered a spot on the hit survival show Alone, Kielyn Marrone was actually excited to take a break from her regular life. This statement might sound pretty close to a Chuck Norris joke — But it's the truth... All this to say Kie is made for the wild. Not the friendly, fruit hanging on trees, animals jumping in the pot kind of wild either. She and her husband Dave Marrone run Lure of the North - an outfitting service specializing in arctic style snow shoe adventures lasting a week or more. Robin and Kie talk about her story: homesteading in the middle of nowhere, guiding people through inhospitable places, our need for wilderness, making your own traditional clothes, training, teamwork, and the life events that made her harder than a concrete box of nails.... along with a bunch of surprising realities about the show Alone of course.
EP034: Matty Turner ↣ A student of the Australian outback
01:41:50
Matty Turner is and host of the podcast ‘Becoming a Bowhunter’.
A self confessed late-onset hunter, Matty’s been making up for it over the past six years. Which is why you’ll often find him out in the bush, armed with a bow in one hand and a microphone in the other...
Chasing wild adventures and mind-opening conversations in equal measure, the expert info he's gathered has helped new hunters accelerate their learning curve both in Oz and the rest of the world.
In this episode Robin and Matty chat through his story: bow-hunting in Australia, the power of sharing knowledge, and how modern approaches to mental health and physical strength can increase your odds of success (and happiness in general). There might even be some wild speculation on how hunting could get a PR makeover, and what ‘the normies’ really think about wild sourced meat.
A huge thank-you to Matty for sharing his time and stories with us today!
Just a quick check-in from the woods of Northern California. Archery deer season has arrived, so this week I'm putting down my to-do-list and picking up my bow.
We have a fantastic full-length episode next week, be sure to follow me at the Instagram link below, I'll also keep you updated with my adventures, both in the woods, and out on the ocean chasing fish too.
Thanks to everyone who keeps listening every week. Enjoy the American summer, and Australian/South African hunting season through winter... see you next week!

EP37: Michael Scrogan ↣ The pursuit of hunting stories
02:00:21
Michael is the host of The Hunting Stories Podcast. While he's not busy hearing other people's hunting stories from around the world. Michael's heading off to the mountains to make some of his own — and he's got some great ones too.
In this dual release with The Hunting Stories Podcast we hear some of Robin and Michael's stories: The steep learning curve of the early years all the way through to recent experiences chasing Elk and Axis deer in Colorado and Hawaii. Robin also shares a couple of stories about his recent adventures in South Africa and Northern California.
EP38: Save Your Own Skin ↣ Stories From Dennis McKiver, A Pararescue Specialist
01:31:22
Dennis McKiver is back! This time with more tales of close-calls and near-misses.
Along with the usual smorgasbord of stories, we have underlying theme of Self-Rescue tips too... It's perhaps obvious but pushing a rescue button might not always be the best or quickest way to get yourself out of trouble. Some training, skills and smart thinking could help save your skin.
given the medical nature of this episode it seems wise to also note that this is the opinion of one highly trained life-saving ex-military life-saving human... and listeners should always take time to get officially educated on best emergency practices for each situation.
Despite covering a ton of good-n-deep stuff in our last episode… Robin and Kie barely scratched the surface on her career as an expedition guide in Canada. So, thankfully she's agreed to gear up, slap on her snowshoes and dive deep into life as an extreme winter-wilderness expert.
This one’s got a bunch of fantastic stories, all told with her trademark: let’s-make-lemonade-from-lemons attitude, best enjoyed with lots of ice.
Thanks again to Kielyn for all the entertainment!
The schedule for their winter expeditions is now live - check em out at LureoftheNorth.com
EP40: Cayden Marquis ↣ Hunting for a chocolate milkshake
01:21:24

A big thanks to Cayden for all the adventures and memories!
EP41: Harmony Cronin ↣ A Punk-Rocker’s Guide to Nature
02:07:43
Harmony Cronin's path has taken many fascinating turns. From urban roots, to hopping trains, balancing in a societal nook called the 'slip space' and fighting the system with punk-rock: ultimately all roads have led her to nature.
A human with a love for all beings, she honors the lives she takes by making full use of the resources they provide. Developing her own ancient skills and sharing this knowledge with a community of friends and students around her.
Monroe Robinson is a truly fascinating individual. An avid student of the wild and meticulous craftsman and maker – his combined passion for the outdoors and attention to detail has gotten him into all kinds of interesting adventures. From salvaging ancient abandoned redwoods in California to care taking Proenneke's historic cabin at Twin Lakes, Alaska for almost 20 years.
Monroe also wrote a book about care-taking and restoring the cabin at Twin Lakes: 'The Handcrafted Life of Dick Proenneke' is available through Lost Art Press.

02:45:08

Robin and a handful of different friends go after Moose, Elk and antelope... there will be big successes, crushing failures and some surprise new friendships in the mountains sparked by a common love of adventure and prolonged suffering...
In this episode Dennis McKiver, retired Pararescue specialist and fish and game warden continues more wild stories along with a bunch of useful survival tips that might just help you save your own skin. (Check EP38 for the first half of this chat)
This podcast goes live on Veterans Day, one day after Memorial Day over in the United Kingdom and many other countries too — Thank you Dennis, and all veterans who have served and sacrificed for their country.
Given the medical nature of this episode it seems wise to also note that this is the opinion of one highly trained life-saving ex-military life-saving human... and listeners should always take time to get officially educated on the best emergency practices for each situation.
EP46: Dave Holder ↣ Lead survival consultant of the Alone show
01:32:48
Dave Holder has dedicated most his life to thriving in wild places. The Englishman now lives in Canada running expeditions and survival courses with his wife Brenda. He also spends four months of the year consulting for the TV show Alone, keeping it's participants and staff safe and informed in a variety of potentially dangerous environments. A big thanks again to Dave Holder for sharing his time with us today!
EP47: Henry Shires ↣ The Past, Present and Future of Ultralight Backpacking
01:40:00
Henry Shires is the joint founder of Tarptent - an ultralight tent company based out of Nevada City California. A tinkerer by nature, when the world didn’t provide the ultralight gear Henry wanted, he just bought a sewing machine and made it himself. Little did he know this would be the beginning of an almost 25 year business…
This Episode’s got coming of age stories, adventures, learnings and some fascinating technical stuff about all the decisions behind that almost impossibly thin fabric we shelter under while adventuring out in the boonies.
