George Paddison is sent to boarding school, deep in the North Yorkshire countryside. His wealthy father, the owner of a national newspaper, says it will be ‘the making of him’. At first, George is lonely and bewildered in the vastness of the Manor School, but is befriended by a captivating young boy, named Joseph Longmire. George is fascinated by Joseph’s prized possession, a toy Victorian theatre, through which he makes up his own stories. By means of distraction, Joseph takes George exploring in the huge grounds, to a mysterious woodland that is home to a strange natural phenomenon.

The story is based upon the Highway of Tears, a Canadian highway from British Columbia to Alberta. The bodies of 19 First Nation's women have been discovered along the stretch of road, but more than 40 women are said to have been taken from Highway 16 over the years.

Cartwright and Enfield Detective Agency had shuttered its doors under what they call "mysterious circumstances". After a catastrophic destruction of their offices in Manhattan, with the Cartwright half of the equation missing and presumed dead, Frank Enfield winds up in Bellevue.

When he gets out, he’s looking for a little relaxing R&R in upstate New York, but a certain mysterious Librarian has other plans. Enfield is flung out of the frying pan and into flames of "that weird shit, from the other side of town, run by the boys in the back room," and he finds he just might have a taste for that kind of work.

Frank Enfield has a new assignment from the Librarian. This time, it's a trip, under the cover of darkness, to retrieve the Packard clan's Family Bible which is much more than it seems.
