28 Apr 20221. You're Not "Just" an Assistant00:14:57

Welcome to the first episode of the Whole Assistant podcast! In today’s episode, we will focus on the concept of why you’re not “just” an assistant. Many of the assistants that I coach struggle around the issue of self concept and seeing what gifts they bring to the table. Once you start to see yourself as a leader in your office and recognize the value you bring to others, your self concept will improve tremendously.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • The importance of self concept as an assistant.
  • Why you should always acknowledge your gifts as an assistant and why your contributions matter, even if other people don’t get what you do.
  • Why not fitting in is not only okay, and should be utilized as a strength.
  • How to look for ways to add value and how to communicate it to others.

05 May 20222. Overworking Versus Success00:16:53

Welcome to the second episode of the Whole Assistant podcast!  In today’s episode, we will focus on the myth of having to overwork in order to be a successful, highly paid assistant.  Many of the assistants I coach hold themselves back out of fear of overworking, but it doesn’t have to be that way.  You can be a highly paid, successful assistant without relinquishing your boundaries.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • How some assistants have a fear of overworking and what it looks like.
  • What motivates assistants to overwork.
  • Why success is not tied to overworking, and why you should look to add value instead.
  • What success as an assistant actually looks like, and how time management and boundaries can get you closer to success.

Whole Assistant Podcast Show Notes

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • What life was like as I started to experience burnout and how ignoring the signs led to a major health crisis.
  • Why focusing on making others around me happy contributed to my burnout.
  • The two lessons burnout taught me and how those lessons continue to shape my life today.

19 May 20224. Wasting vs. Resting00:17:01

Whole Assistant Podcast Show Notes

Episode 4: Wasting vs. Resting

Welcome to episode four of the Whole Assistant podcast!  In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about wasting versus resting.  This is a topic that has come up with some of the clients I coach and more recently in my personal life.  So many of us feel guilty when we’re not doing anything and start to think that we are wasting time.  There is a huge difference between wasting time and resting, and controlling your brain is the key to managing expectations.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • The difference between wasting and resting, including what wasting time really looks like and what resting really looks like.
  • How to set boundaries with work when you’re supposed to be resting.
  • Why some executive assistants have a hard time resting.
  • How we need to control our brain in order to show up for ourselves in a way that feels healthy and confident.

26 May 20225. Why you say yes when you really want to say no00:16:09

Whole Assistant Podcast Show Notes

Episode 5: Why you’re saying yes when you really want to say no

Welcome to episode five of the Whole Assistant podcast!  In today’s episode, we’re going to discuss why you’re saying yes when you really want to say no.  Don’t believe the myth that you always have to say yes to get ahead in your career or to be seen as a good assistant.  In fact, a well-placed no will benefit not only you, but also your executive and the organization as a whole.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Why always saying yes can result in a resentment rash and how this causes you to be less effective at your job.
  • The two scenarios when you shouldn’t say no.
  • Why you sometimes get sucked into saying yes and how it affects you and your job performance.
  • How to be solutions oriented even when you’re saying no.
  • The best way to say no (affirm-deny-affirm)

02 Jun 20226. How to Improve Your Work Relationships00:16:29

Whole Assistant Podcast Show Notes

Episode 6: How to improve your work relationships

Welcome to episode six of the Whole Assistant podcast!  In today’s episode, we’re going to discuss how to improve the work relationships you have with your executive and other colleagues.  The relationships that we have with others tend to be based upon the expectations we have for them, but what happens when they don’t fulfill those expectations?  It’s easy to start to feel defensive towards that person, or to become controlling, but neither one of those options is good for cultivating healthy work relationships.  In today's episode of the podcast, I’m going to teach you what to do instead and how it will help your work relationships.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • The concept of “the manual” and how it impacts our expectation of others.
  • The difference between a manual versus a boundary.
  • The two paths we take when someone is not behaving in a way we think they should and why both paths can be damaging to  relationships.
  • Why you should accept your coworkers and your executive as who they are and how it can help grow your relationship with them.

Welcome to episode seven of the Whole Assistant podcast!  In today’s episode, we’re going to discuss how to deal with difficult personalities in the workplace, and more specifically, how to deal with that one coworker who gets under your skin or annoys you.  I sometimes refer to these irritating coworkers as a “pickle person.”   Even though your pickle person seems to do everything they can to push your buttons, they also offer us an opportunity to grow.  In this episode, I’m going to talk to you about how you can reframe your thinking about your pickle person, and how it can help you in the long term.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

19 Jan 2023The Big Impact of Small Decisions00:28:21

I’ve been reflecting lately on how I want to show up for 2023.

Yes, I’m an assistant but I’m also the CEO of Whole Assistant and my life

When I view my life through the lens of CEO a number of questions have come up for me:

  • Do I like how I'm choosing to spend my time?
  • Is how I’m presenting myself a true reflection of the badass CEO I’m becoming?
  • How would “Annie the CEO” show up for this situation, circumstance, or decision?

Answering these questions has led to subtle shifts that are starting to have a big impact.

During this installment of The Whole Assistant Podcast, I’ll share 4 areas where I’m noticing the most change.

You are the CEO of your life too!

I hope you will take what I share on this episode and use it to make similar shifts that will help level up your self concept.

18 May 2023The Biggest Mistake You Might Be Making When Setting Boundaries00:20:40

Boundaries skyrocket our effectiveness in our roles, help us strategically manage our time, and help to ensure that our non-working hours are spent (you guessed it) not working.

The biggest barrier I come across when it comes to establishing a new boundary isn’t our executives or colleagues. It’s us.

During this episode I break down:

  • How to think about boundaries in a way that will help you successfully hold them
  • How to let your boundaries stand on their own
  • When to let your boundaries breathe a little

25 May 2023Being Solutions Oriented vs Being the Solution00:13:52

As the people with the answers in our respective work environments, it’s really easy to onboard work that would be better suited for someone else or that isn’t the best use of your time.

By being solutions oriented without being the solution you can still offer a tremendous amount of value while simultaneously showing up more strategically in your position.

During today’s podcast episode I break down:

  • Why being the solution for everyone can be problematic
  • How to detach from our internal need to be the “doer” while still offering value
  • What being solutions oriented actually looks like

01 Jun 2023Focus Intolerance00:17:47

If you’ve been a part of my world for a while then you already know I consistently advocate for focus.

Focus is the secret sauce for success. It will help you:

  • Improve productivity & time management
  • Reduce mistakes
  • Reduce overwhelm
  • Avoid burnout

Why is it that we don’t incorporate more focus throughout our day?

The truth is, we have inadvertently trained our brains to resist focus. Our work often transpires with countless tabs open, while our smartphones incessantly demand our attention with a constant barrage of notifications. We fail to pause the influx of requests by leaving our inboxes and messaging apps perpetually accessible.

During this podcast episode I break down the dilemma of focus intolerance. I also share tried and true ways of consistently showing up for your day with more focus.
