EPISODE 218: What does it take to grow a small “family business” into a large, multi-state operation?

Many would maybe say luck, but as I’ve said in the last episode, there is no such thing as luck in business; as entrepreneurs, we must rely on hard work, dedication, and a whole lot of strong processes.

In this episode, Vince will be discussing how he and his family transformed their small cabinet refacing business in California (first started in 1983) to a successful enterprise with over 700 employees and an expanded product lineup.

He’ll also be touching on the importance of having standardized systems and processes in your business (and when to start doing that), why marketing and sales are everything, how the company’s business strategy shifted during and after the pandemic, why you have to make sure you’re not a quote “family business”, and much more.

EPISODE 211: If you feel like your business is stuck or finding it difficult to grow it past a certain point, then this is the episode for you.

You’re not alone, many home improvement business owners find themselves hitting a wall during their growth. There are key points when this happens along the journey, and it’s usually because the way owners manage their business isn’t changing — they aren’t systemizing their processes.

EPISODE 203: Recovering from severe business losses is difficult… but NOT impossible! Especially when you have the right business (and life) partner by your side.

In business, sometimes you win big, and sometimes you fail, but when you do, the most important thing is to get back on your feet and never give up.

Resilience and hard work are key if you want to rebuild and grow your business after seeing massive losses.

But don’t take it from me; instead, I want you to meet my guests on this week’s episode, Ken Baer and Pattie Capezza.

They lost everything, but through sheer resilience, great teamwork, and a perfect dynamic, they rebuilt their careers and were able to start a brand new business that is now their new “ATM machine”.

If you’ve ever felt like giving up when the going gets tough, then this episode is for you – plus I’m also joined by my lovely wife and business partner, Adi Kaskavalciyan, in this special couples’ episode, so you definitely should listen to it if you’re working with or thinking about partnering up with your spouse.

04 Mar 2024Change How You Think About Money and Break Through Your Financial Set Point | David Neagle00:46:32

EPISODE 205: Have you ever found yourself financially (and mentally) stuck in a place you didn’t want to be?

Most people have been there before. And those who have changed their financial reality did it through one thing: Changing the way they think and feel about money.

You see, many of the things we tell ourselves about how much money we can make or how much money we need end up limiting us more than we might think.

And as long as we don’t get rid of those limiting beliefs and change our mindset, we won’t be able to break through our “financial set point”.

To discuss this in more detail, I’m sitting down with David Neagle.

A few decades ago, David found himself in the exact situation I described above. He was a high school dropout who was working a dead-end job. In one word, he was stuck

Yet, as soon as that realization hit, everything changed for him. In thirty days (yes, you’ve read that right), he tripled his income. Then a short time later, he went from making $50,000 a year to $50,000 a month.

He did that by breaking down his very own limiting beliefs around money, and today, he’s going to help you do the same.

Listen in as he and I discuss the importance of personal growth, how to overcome psychological barriers to success, how to break down your limiting beliefs around money, and the secret to breaking through your financial set point.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Tune in now!

Key Takeaways:

Introduction (00:00)

25 Nov 2024Trick Yourself Into Thinking You’re Better Than You Are | Chris Hermes00:32:56

EPISODE 224: To grow a truly successful home improvement business, you don’t just need to sell more or deliver quality work, you also need to make sure your sales and production aren’t misaligned.

After all, it is this alignment that creates the foundation for a thriving business: predictable growth and profitability without all the headaches.

How can you achieve this?

To answer this question, I’ve invited an expert on this week’s episode of The Wealthy Contractor podcast, Chris Hermes, the founder of USA Showers, a bath remodeling company based in Arizona.

Chris learned the ropes from industry leader (and my dear friend) Brian Gottlieb, applying lessons on KPI management and the importance of cash flow in handling the “back end” of the business while scaling profitably.

With a disciplined approach to alignment between sales and production, and a personal commitment to self-development, Chris is now on a mission to double his own business’ revenue in the coming year.

In this episode, Chris and I will be discussing his personal development journey, the story of how he went from running sales to being thrown into running a $25 million backend, how he scaled his brand new USA Showers to $6M in revenue in less than a year, why you should trick yourself into thinking you’re better than you are, and so much more.

Chris’s journey to his own multimillion dollar bath remodeling business is truly inspiring, and I can’t wait for you to learn more about it.

Are you ready?

Let’s dive in!

P.S: Chris will also be a speaker at our big annual event, Accelerate LIVE! 2025, so make sure to get your tickets now before seats sell out to hear more from him and other top industry experts. Check the additional resources below for more info.

01 Apr 2024Reshaping Success: How a Contractor Switched From Resistance to Action | Tim Brown00:35:50

EPISODE 207: A lot of home improvement business owners find themselves focusing on the wrong things, which ends up costing them time and money in the long run.

Many of us (past me included) know this, but are resistant to change. And so, we end up feeling trapped in a place where we’re overworked, stressed out, and not paid enough. Because of that, we also end up not being able to dream big and truly have the life we deserve.

To make big changes and pull ourselves out of the direction we’re already headed down, a mindset shift is a must. And no one knows this better than this week’s guest on the podcast, Tim Brown.

When Tim took over his family business, a rain gutter company, he could barely make any profit. In fact, as he himself says in this episode, they were never really profitable.

Tim then focused too much on top-line growth. Yes, he was diversified, but some of the services he offered weren’t profitable enough.

To change this, Tim finally made a monumental shift. Over the years, he had been attending many different industry events and working with mastermind groups like The Wealthy Contractor Success Society, but he decided he wasn’t going to be just a “learner” anymore. Instead, he was going to become a “doer”.

This one mindset flip – and deciding to become profitable – changed everything for him and his company.

In this episode, Tim and I will be going over his journey and discussing a number of important subjects, such as:

  • The importance of being strategic when trying to expand your services,
  • How the transition from focusing on revenue to prioritizing profit helped him turn his small business into a multi-million dollar enterprise,
  • The importance of listening to experts and keeping an open mind,
  • Why participating in mastermind groups is one of the best decisions he’s ever made,

… and more!

Are you ready for this thrilling conversation?

Then tune in now!

Raving Fans become repeat buyers, referral machines, and 5-star reviewers. The game of business has changed forever. Online reviews are influencing buying decisions more than ever before. 03 Aug 2018Dan S. Kennedy - Ep.47 - Ruthless Management of People and Profits00:41:09

Today’s episode is a special one, because I’m talking with my longtime mentor, Dan Kennedy, a marketing 'guru' and champion for small business. I first met Dan in 1996 and initially bought his Magnetic Marketing® system. Since then, I have read every book he has authored, attended countless seminars both in person and via audio, became a member of his Mastermind Group and off-and-on worked with him as a private client. His No BS Newsletter has been my go-to source for information and inspiration for the past 22 years. On this episode we’re discussing the principles found in Dan’s book, No BS Ruthless Management of People and Profits, and its message: Solid People + Structured Programs = Massive Profits In a time when many business owners are having difficulty finding and keeping good people, this message is especially relevant. In this episode we’ll be discussing: How we’ve shifted to an employee-controlled market; The workplace environment that breeds winners; Why ruthless management is actually common sense management; Why structured programs - that everyone follows - are vital to your success; The importance of maintaining a long-term relationship with your customers and 3 metrics to measure the quality of yours. You shouldn’t be struggling in today’s economy - you should be thriving and preparing your business for long-term success through people, processes, customer relationships and sound finances. If you’re not, you’ll want to pay special attention to Dan’s advice in this episode. I would also recommend checking out all of Dan’s books and resources: www.NOBSBooks.com www.NOBSInnerCircle.com For questions, comments, or a strategy session contact us: www.gfourmarketing.com/strategy | (305) 856-8788

09 Jul 2018Dan Callies - Ep. 45 - Get ‘Off the Truck’ to Work on Your Business00:38:54

Dan Callies is the owner of Oak Creek Plumbing - one of the leading providers of plumbing service repair and remodeling in his market. Oak Creek started as a simple, plumbing business for new construction. But it all changed the day Dan decided to ‘get off the truck’. Too many owners of home improvement businesses are stuck “on the truck” (i.e. stuck being the salesperson, the technician, the office manager, etc.) in their business. This is also called working IN your business, rather than ON your business. The only way to grow your business is to get off the truck and switch from thinking like a plumber or salesperson to thinking like an entrepreneur. In this episode, you’ll hear me and Dan talk about: How he got off the truck, and grew his business. How you determine when it’s time for you to get ‘off the truck’. What you have to have in place to get off the truck, and How to stay off the truck. And, much more. If you’re stuck working IN your business and you want to grow your business and take time off without losing a beat (like Dan does), listen to this episode. 19 Aug 2024How Contractors Can Diversify Their Lead Generation in 2024 | Ken Baer00:50:37

EPISODE 217: So many contractors focus on just one or two lead sources to bring in most of their business and completely disregard lead diversification as a goal.

And while this strategy might have worked during the Covid boom, it’s definitely not working today. In the 2024 market, lead source diversification is a must, and no one knows this more than this week’s guest on the podcast, Ken Baer.

Before the pandemic, Ken’s home improvement business brought in most of its leads from their partner, Home Depot. However, after 2020, they decided to diversify lead sources and establish their own brand, K&P Remodeling.

In this week’s episode of The Wealthy Contractor podcast, Ken explains how they succeeded implementing other lead sources, why he loves in-store promoters for lead generation, the importance of constant innovation to bring in better leads with lower costs, why platforms such as YouTube and Amazon Prime are now very accessible for home improvement ads, the best time slots for commercials during an election year, and so much more.

13 May 2024The Power of Specialization & Why You Should Say ‘No’ More Often | David Barnett00:40:56

EPISODE 210: Many professionals in the contracting industry often find themselves distracted by adding on too many types of services or accepting one-off jobs they don’t specialize in.

Instead of focusing on a few offers, they try to take on every part of the market, and end up with inefficient systems, disgruntled employees, unhappy customers, and very little profit.

They are the “Jack of all trades, master of none.”

But this doesn’t have to be the reality for you!

You can avoid all of this, and all you need to do can be summarized in one word: Specialization.

Specialization – and saying ‘no’ to non-specialist work– is the secret to a flourishing home improvement business, and no one knows this better than this week’s guest on The Wealthy Contractor Podcast, David Barnett.

David has over two decades of experience in our industry and is the owner of Barnett Roofing in Knoxville, Tennessee.

In this episode, he shares with us his entrepreneurship journey and discusses the importance of specialization, why you should say ‘no’ more often, and why generational business building matters so much.

He’ll also be breaking down his hiring strategy, the best way to ensure new hires fit into your company's culture, and his secret to employee retention.

28 Oct 2024Ego Is the Enemy of Success (And How to Let Go of Control) | Charles Surber00:53:47

EPISODE 222: Many contractors find themselves taking on too much work because they don’t want to give up control. They’d rather work long hours in the business than hire the people to do it.

But this isn’t the way to run a successful company, no matter how talented you might be.

If you’re incredible at what you do, but find that your ego and need for control are holding you back from delegating and hiring the people you need to do the work, then you definitely want to give this week’s episode of The Wealthy Contractor podcast a listen.

In it, I sit down with my friend Charles Surber from Surber’s Windows & Doors, a family-owned home remodeling business with a 44-year history.

Since joining in 1994, Charles was able to successfully scale the business while also increasing his profit margins; but he wasn’t able to do so until he let go of certain responsibilities, hired and trained a great sales team, implemented a structured selling system, and found ways to remove the fear from making certain decisions

Make sure to listen in as Charles and I discuss his company’s phenomenal success, why he adopted the Profit First method, and the importance of letting go of control (even when you really can do it best).

He and I will also be talking about how he’s hacked customer loyalty, why the company is focusing on community engagement as much as profit, the importance of face-to-face marketing, his incredible open house strategy, and more.

EPISODE 232: 2024 was a tough market for the home improvement industry. Economic uncertainties and rising costs threw a wrench in many contractors' plans, but not for my guest today, Kirk Koskiniemi.

Kirk took his roofing business from $10.4M to $16.7M over the past year AND raised profits at the same time. He and his team achieved this with a single mantra: "Do fewer things better".

In this episode, Kirk lays out the areas they worked on to achieve this amazing feat during a year other home improvement companies were stumbling.

We talk about how he optimized his sales funnel’s various conversion points, increasing average ticket size to drive down marketing costs (even on small repair jobs), what a typical week looks like for his sales reps, and the magic behind “handing out leads like they are diamonds”.

You’ll also find out why their average NSLI (Net Sales Per Lead Issued) went from $5,600 to $10,500 in December when they were low on leads—and why they are thinking of switching sales goals from overall revenue to the highest NSLI.

We finally chatted about how our Accelerate LIVE! event played a major role in his growth with its big learning and networking opportunities.

22 Jul 20247 Steps to Create a Home Improvement Business That Works FOR You00:34:48

EPISODE 215: Many home improvement businesses manage to achieve high revenue but the owners are still not reaping the benefits. This happens because, more often than not, they make much lower profit margins than they COULD be making.

In an attempt to compensate for this, we end up working endless hours FOR our business each week, often sacrificing our health, mental wellbeing, and time with our family.

I know this because I’ve made these same mistakes before, and only by changing the way I worked and thought about my business was I able to turn things around.

And in this week’s episode of The Wealthy Contractor podcast, I’ve decided to share with you my 7-step guide to do the same for your business.

Tune in as I discuss how you can reverse-engineer a business model that generates wealth and freedom for you, the importance of setting up clear personal and professional goals as a business owner, the concept of “who not how”, and why you should focus on profit margins over top-line revenue.

I’ll also be talking about the importance of accountability in business, why you should work on your mindset more, and why you have to always begin with the end in mind.

Are you ready for this?

Tune in now to learn more.

06 Jan 2025How to Be the BEST Leader for Your Home Improvement Business | John Anglis00:35:32

EPISODE 230: To be a great business owner, you need to understand yourself.

Why is that so important?

Once you truly know what kind of leader you are, you’ll be able to understand what it takes to do these three things: manage your time efficiently, delegate, and implement.

I discuss all of this (and more) in this week’s episode of The Wealthy Contractor podcast with my guest John Anglis.

John is a seasoned leader who built a highly profitable home improvement business that operated independently of him before selling it to a private equity firm. Today, John is a consultant who specializes in sales training and organizational growth.

John and I will be discussing his journey building a multimillion-dollar business and selling it. We’ll also be talking about what typically gets in the way of efficient implementation, how he uses his DISC to understand how people see him and be a better leader, how business owners sometimes abdicate instead of delegate, and the importance of networking as an entrepreneur.

John will also preview his upcoming talk at our Accelerate LIVE! 2025 event, which will be focusing on creating impactful organizational structures through the various “break points” of company growth.

Are you ready to scale your business to the next level with John’s insights?

Then tune in now.
