When you hear talking heads yelling at you or see a crazy meme on the internet telling to buy or sell a stock, how do you know if they are right or wrong? Today we sit down with Anish Mitra, host of the hilarious podcast Laughing Stocks to discuss his journey through FIG Banking, investing in Goldman Sachs' reinsurance group (now Global Atlantic, part of KKR), and talent development at Goldman Sachs before venturing into the world of comedy and content creation. Spoiler alert: it didn't go well.
Anish graduated from Brown in 2010, worked in FIG banking at Barclays then moved to a buyside role at Goldman Sachs (now Global Atlantic, part of KKR), then to talent management at Goldman Sachs when he finally left the finance world to pursue a career in comedy. Welcome back to the Wall Street Skinny with Kristen and Jen! To kick off today's episode, we answer listener questions about:
Ownership and EPS (earnings per share) dilution when analyzing companies using the Treasury Stock Method in corporate finance. We unpack the concept of a relative value trade, specifically a high yield vs. investment grade trade in the credit derivatives market of CDS and CDX. Then we switch gears to discuss a single name credit analysis in the context of a rumored leveraged buyout by a private equity firm and the potential impact on a company's existing bond holders. And finally we dive into the concept of the yield curve, explaining how the term structure of interest rates not only reflects current monetary policy, growth & inflation expectations, and risk appetites...but also impacts nearly everything financial decision you make in your daily life!

In Part II of this three-part case study of Sujeet Indap and Max Frumes' book Caesars Palace Coup, we pick up in 2008 after Apollo and TPG's $30bn Leveraged Buyout of Caesars closed. With the economy immediately taking a nosedive, Apollo spearheaded a series of restructurings to stave off bankruptcy. These restructurings ranged from more vanilla "distress-for-control" maneuvers to extremely questionable, cloak-and-dagger asset transfers and severing of guarantees. These ultimately culminated in a showdown between the titans of Private Equity and the creditors they'd effectively superseded through expert manipulation of Caesars' legal and capital structures.

55. Women on Wall Street: Is There a Problem with Female Managers?
The Wall Street Journal recently published an article titled "Women Aren't Getting the Big Jobs at Goldman Sachs, and They're Heading for the Exits" (linked below). That same day, we were asked by our social media community whether our best managers were male or female when we were working at investment banks. Our answer? Male.
We received HUNDREDS of messages from our community --- from mostly women --- saying their experience with female managers on Wall Street was overwhelmingly negative.
So we wanted to have a frank, open discussion of these two distinct but very related topics in a public forum to discern what the nature of the problem is and to try and suggest possible solutions.
We are joined by two amazing women for this conversation: Carissa Jordan and Nikki Boulukos, currently the co-founders of Benjamin Talks, a company on a mission to facilitate financial literacy for people of all ages starting with children. Carissa and Nikki started their careers in Fixed Income and Equities Sales & Trading at Goldman Sachs, and rose through the ranks before exiting for individual reasons we will discuss.
This will be the first of many conversations with women ranging from the junior most levels all the way to the C-suite. Anyone working on Wall Street or planning on a career in the industry needs to listen to this episode.
Nikki Boulukos is Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Benjamin Talks
BA in Psychology & Economics from Harvard. Additionally, cross-registered and completed coursework in Accounting & Finance at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and London School of E

Credit Strategy: how does it work, who are the players, and what are the career opportunities? Today we are discussing the structure of the Credit Strategy desk at an Investment Bank with Dominique Toublan, head of US Credit Strategy at Barclays Capital.
We discuss how you approach the vast world of corporate bonds and distill trends as a strategist, how you reconcile investor sentiment with supply/demand dynamics, and what role are you serving within the ecosystem of Wall Street. The US Credit market --- meaning, where corporate bonds trade after they've been issued --- is orders of magnitude larger than the US Equities market. Credit spreads, which are a measure of the riskiness associated with the debt of an individual corporate borrower, are a critical barometer of economic strength/weakness and investor risk appetite. Understanding these dynamics is essential not only to those who wish to pursue a career in credit strategy, trading, or sales, but also for those who wish to understand the Private Credit markets and the funding dynamics that influence deal making and investment on the Private Equity and Hedge Fund side of the industry.

67. Finance, Philosophy, and the Yen Carry Trade feat. John Normand
We often talk about institutional investors as the allocators of capital to the public and private markets. They are huge, active participants driving supply and demand dynamics in the fixed income and equity markets, and they often make sizable investments as LPs in private equity and private credit funds. But what exactly are they trying to accomplish, and why?
We sat down with John Normand --- the former head of Cross-Asset Strategy at JP Morgan and the current head of Investment Strategy at Australian Super --- to discuss investment strategy at a superannuation fund (what we in the US think of as a "pension fund"). John is one of our most accomplished and distinguished guests to date. Not only does he explain the mechanics of defined benefit / defined contribution plans, but he also shares his philosophical perspective on the ethics of investing, his current views on the macro environment, and a crash course in one of the staples of fixed income markets: the Yen carry trade. This episode is a must listen for anyone who wants to understand how some of the biggest allocators of capital in both the public and private markets approach investment strategy.

69. How Hedge Funds Raise Money Feat. Ron Biscardi, CEO of iConnections
We talk about Hedge Fund, Private Equity, and other "Alternative" Investment Funds all the time. But we don't always stop to ask, "how do they get all their money?" In this episode, we sat down with CEO of iConnections Ron Biscardi to explore the world of "Cap Intro": the ecosystem within which capital --- meaning, the money from pension funds, endowments, foundations, insurance companies, family offices etc --- gets allocated to fund managers in the Alts space. We learn about seed capital (money that gets new funds off the ground), explore the roles of third party marketers, broker dealers, & prime brokerage within a bank when it comes to cap intro, and discuss how iConnections has built a platform backed by technology to facilitate the world's largest cap intro conferences.
An expert in relationships and connecting people, Ron also shares his experience involving athletes, stars, and influencers like Kim Kardashian, Shaquille O'Neal, and Eli Manning in the conversation, all of whom have become formidable investors in their own right and are at the forefront of deal making in the space today. We are so excited to share this episode ahead of next week's SALT iConnections conference in NYC from May 20-21, where (thanks to Ron!) we will sharing live interviews with some of the industry's most influential and innovative thought leaders.

78. What It Takes to Become the Most Powerful Woman on Wall Street Feat. Zoe Cruz, Founder and CEO of Menai Financial Group.
Today we are speaking with Zoe Cruz, who was the Head of the Fixed Income Division at Morgan Stanley when Jen started her career as a summer intern back in 2005, and who ultimately went on to become President of the firm when Kristen started full-time at MS in 2007. She rose to the absolute upper echelons of high finance at a time when it was virtually unheard of for a woman to reach that level of leadership.
Zoe has an incredible story. She started her Wall Street career as a young mother and built the FX business from scratch at one of the world's most elite investment banks. Zoe was at one point ranked number 10 on the Forbes list of the world’s top 100 most powerful women, has previously topped Fortune magazine’s list of highest paid women in the world, has served on countless boards and advisory councils, started a macro hedge fund (cue Elle Woods…”I mean, what, like it’s hard?”), and she is currently the founder and CEO of Menai Financial Group, a firm focused on the world of “defi” (or decentralized finance).
Our conversation with Zoe is both a candid look at evolving gender roles on Wall Street and an exciting glimpse into "the next big thing" in finance from the perspective of one of the industry's biggest trailblazers.

79. What’s the Max Age to Break into Wall Street and Tech | TWSS x IGLE
We get asked every day by listeners of ALL ages, "am I too old to start a career in finance??" When you ostensibly need to have internships on your resume by the time you are 19 years old, and when on-cycle PE recruiting starts before new college grads even set foot in IBD training, it's easy to feel that way. But on the flipside, young people are often dismissed as inexperienced and excluded from the big conversations when their age is deemed to be a negative. So, let's talk about age in the industry.
We have a special crossover episode for you today with tech industry expert and TWSS bestie Maureen Wiley Clough, the host of "It Gets Late Early", a podcast devoted to exploring themes of age and experience in the tech world. We discuss age related hiring issues across the spectrum of elite jobs like tech and high finance, share personal stories, and outline specific tips for breaking into the industry at older ages.

Happy 4th of July! We wanted to discuss an article from Fortune Magazine that's been making the rounds, where the COO of Blackrock said "We have more and more conviction that we need people who majored in history, in English, and things that have nothing to do with finance or technology" (article linked below). We discuss the pros and cons of coming to finance with a background in the humanities, especially in the context of how AI will impact jobs at junior levels in different ways.
We also took a trip down memory lane to celebrate the 19th anniversary of Kristen's calamitous, yet ultimately fortuitous, visit to NYC to visit Jen during her junior year summer internship.

84. How to Rob a Bank: Inside Financial Fraud Red Teams
Financial fraud is something we hear about ALL the time. It feels like there's a new headline about losses stemming from a hack at a financial institution constantly, and we've all seen shows like The Tinder Swindler where scams of individual consumers can have huge consequences.
The problem with most fraud prevention? It's backward-looking. By the time you solve one problem, criminals have found a new way to steal your money. We sat down with Greenway Solutions, a firm working to revolutionize the space not only for financial institutions, but also for their customers, via the use of "red teams". These red teams can at times sound like complex spy operations --- yet at other times are deceptively simple in their approach. We talk about the (terrifying!) magnitude of the financial fraud landscape, how it is changing in the face of AI and deepfakes, and some of the most surprising ways that fraudsters are staying ahead of conventional security measures.

86. Private Credit 101: Asset-Based Lending Feat. Keri Findley, Founder and CEO of Tacora Capital
We are kicking off our multi-part foray into the world of Private Credit --- arguably the most talked-about investment vertical of 2024 --- with brilliant and hilarious Keri Findley, founder and CEO of Tacora Capital. If you're interested in learning about Securitized Products, prestigious exit opportunities from the Sales, Trading, & Research division of an Investment Bank, or the career path towards landing a job in Private Credit, this episode is a MUST LISTEN.
Keri is our first guest who has a background in Securitized Products, and she has a superpower of being able to explain complex concepts in a simple way. Keri walks us through her early career in ABS CDO research at Morgan Stanley, her quick exit to the buyside --- where she was a Portfolio Manager at Third Point in her mid-20s (!!) --- and the journey of starting her own Private Capital Firm.
With Keri, we also explore the themes of how blurred the lines can be between our personal and professional lives on Wall Street. Her candid discussion of what she did to fit in early on in her career, how she handles gossip and negativity, and her decision to have her employees sign prenups on their carry illuminates the complexities of being a senior female investor in today's world.

We had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Kat Sosnick, a woman whose impressive career spans three decades running portfolios of up to a billion dollars at some of the world’s most legendary Equity Long/Short Hedge Funds, including Tiger Management, Pequot, and Perry Capital. Kat is a specialist in the consumer retail space, and shares stories with us of how she applied her passion for investigative journalism to doing “grassroots” analysis at the core of her investment theses. Kat gave us the scoop on how she decided to invest in winners like Costco and Amazon, how she earned the nickname "The Grim Reaper" for her fearless shorts of other companies, how she beat stage four cancer and navigated motherhood in one of the most secretive and notoriously male dominated segments of high finance, and how she combats imposter syndrome in her current coaching business. She tells us how she had to stop watching "Billions" because it hit too close to home!
Whether you are considering a career as an investor or simply want the inside scoop on some of the most prominent hedge funds of all time, you'll want to listen to Kat's invaluable advice gleaned from decades of personal experience.

91. How to Network Like a Pro, feat. Jen Prosek, Founder and Managing Partner of Prosek Partners
Today is a masterclass in networking, reputation management, and personal brand building from one of the most successful, highly sought-after minds in the business: Jen Prosek, the founder and CEO of Prosek Partners.
The daughter of immigrants, Jen shares her inspiring story about becoming a go-to consigliere for the male-dominated industry of hedge funds, private equity firms, and investment banks as a female English major without a preexisting network of her own.
Jen outlines steps for building your personal brand, explains how to network throughout all stages of your career (from college student to CEO), and advises on how to handle the inevitable "stubbed toe" from a reputational standpoint.
She also teaches us how to build an entrepreneurial mindset, a subject on which she has written two books (linked below). And finally, Jen answers the age-old question: is all press good press?
Whether you are prepping for fall recruiting season, looking to level up in your career, or seeking to understand the "emerging market frontier of marketing" that's taking place in the private capital and alternative investment space, this episode is a MUST LISTEN.

97. Love, Money, and Tech Feat. Libby Leffler, Founder of First
The biggest mistakes people make are in love and money. And how we do --- or don't --- talk about money can have a huge impact on our relationships.
Today we’re joined by Libby Leffler, Founder & CEO of First (https://www.thisfirst.com) to discuss the good, the bad, and the misunderstood about prenuptial agreements ("prenups") when it comes to strengthening your financial and emotional happiness.
So, who needs a prenup, and why? Why are more women than ever initiating the conversation around prenups? What risks are you exposed to if you don't have a prenup? We discuss the rapidly shifting trends, evolving perceptions, and changing use cases around prenups today.
We also learn about life as a tech founder (something we ex-investment bankers know nothing about). Libby's shares not only her journey through some of the world's biggest tech giants, but also her journey through motherhood as a founder at the helm of a new rocket ship company.
Libby holds degrees from U.C. Berkeley and Harvard Business School. She emerged as a leader and executive at generation-defining companies like Google, Facebook, SoFi, and Compass before launching First.
Libby founded First to modernize prenups for smart couples who want a stress-free and affordable way to strengthen the financial foundation of their relationship.
First provides seamless and cost effective legal agreements on its platform, created in collaboration with top family law attorneys. They are a completely online, flat-fee prenup platform that allows you and your partner to get a highly enforceable document reviewed by real lawyers drafted within a day – all for less than 10% of the cost of a traditional lawyer.

Our nerdiest episode ever, and we’re darn proud of it. Today we’re diving into Microsoft Excel and its role in Investment Banking.
We’re discussing financial modeling, Excel culture, mechanics, best practices, and productivity enhancing tools like Macabacus, the gold standard for Investment Bankers around the world.

We then sit down with Macabacus founder and CEO Ryan MacGregor and Rahul Gill, Director of Product & Customer Enablement, to explore the role of productivity add-ins that will make you feel like an insider before you ever set foot in an Investment Bank. 100. The Fed, Interest Rate Sales, and Asset Management
You've seen all over the financial press that the Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate 50 basis points at its meeting last week. And you've heard economists yapping in the news about "hard landings" and "soft landings" for the economy. But what does that actually MEAN?
We break it all down with none other than Jamie Patton, co-head of Global Rates at TCW, a $200bn multi-asset manager headquartered in California. Jamie started her Wall Street career in Interest Rate Sales at Lehman Brothers, then moved to Barclays Capital before exiting to a role managing Wells Fargo's Bank Portfolio and subsequently joining TCW.
Sure you've heard from Jen a bunch about the lifestyle on the trading floor, but Jamie brings a hilarious and raw perspective sharing her experiences of getting screamed at by clients...and ultimately finding her own voice. Jamie is an expert not only in all things interest rate related, but also talks us through what it takes to succeed in Fixed Income Sales & Trading, what the exit opportunities from those jobs are and how to navigate them, and what it's like having kids and moving from more junior to incredibly senior high finance roles as a mother of three.
Jamie also gives us insight into what a career at an asset management firm looks like and whether a CFA might help you edge out the competition for the role you want.
Jamie Patton is a Specialist Portfolio Manager in the Fixed Income group and is Co-Head of Global Rates. She is responsible for the portfolio management of U.S. Treasuries, global sovereign bonds, TIPS, agencies, money market instruments, commodity strategies, and derivatives. In conjunction with the generalist portfolio managers, she implements decisions on duration and yield curve across our products. Ms. Patton joine
