05 Aug 2023 | 68. When Psychedelics Are Traumatic | 00:41:35
In this episode I delve into the sensitive topic of trauma that has occurred in expanded states of consciousness. By sharing a personal experience, my intention is to dispel the popular misconception in the plant medicine community that “there is no such thing as a bad trip” as this is neither correct or trauma-informed. While many risks can be reduced through best practices for safety, set and setting, that doesn’t change the fact that trauma can occur. The situation I describe has been a defining moment in my life, and I hope that others who have experienced something similar can benefit from this story. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of harm reduction and education in this space, especially as the number of people interested in working with these powerful medicines increase (and the number of facilitators, guides and “shamans” does too). I also go into somatic practices and nervous system regulation as they relate to trauma. This episode introduces a foundational Somatic Experiencing practice called orientation for you to practice and add to your integration and regulation toolkit. This practice involves slowing down to notice your external environment and can be beneficial when feeling activation in the nervous system. This practice has the most benefit when practiced consistently. The Vital Point is practice. 14 Feb 2022 | 19. Working with Grief | 00:52:34
Hey everyone, I wanted to try something different with this episode and talk about something that's been coming up a lot in my own life recently - grief. Grief is something that we all process differently, and some of us don't really sit with it at all. In terms of the realm of transformational practice, grief is one of the things that can come up if we are carrying around the energy of emotions that we've suppressed or haven't yet processed. So far on this podcast, I've talked with practitioners (and a couple times solo) about specific types of practice - but this one is about a strong emotion that transformational practices can help us with. I'd love to know if you liked this, and if it landed please reach out and leave me a message so I can do more episodes like it. 19 May 2022 | 31. Exploring High Dose Mushroom work with Dave Hodges | 01:02:51
For about as long as I have been working with plant medicines, I have been fascinated with people who are exploring the upper limits of psilocybin. I consider them to be true psychonauts - explorers on a final frontier beyond what you may think of as reality. This type of exploration is not for everyone, I am certainly not endorsing it, nor is the guest on this episode, Dave Hodges. Dave is the founder of The Church of Ambrosia and Zidedoor in Oakland - which is a nondenominational, interfaith religious organization that supports the use and safe access of all Entheogenic Plants, with a focus on Cannabis and Magic Mushrooms. As Dave states several times in the podcast - this high dose work that he focuses on is not for everyone, it's not something that you should jump into without serious consideration, safety protocols and assistance. If you are still curious after listening to his experience and story I would recommend reaching out to Dave directly - he is very accessible. And even if you're not called to jumping into high dose mushroom work, this episode is still very fascinating - with plenty of useful information on how to breathe, the importance of set and setting, why mushrooms are here and what their "purpose" is and more. I found it to be one of the most interesting interviews I've had the pleasure of being a part of - and certainly is at home here on the Vital Point which is about transformational practices. I hope you enjoy listening to Dave as much as I did. Learn more about the Guest: Instagram: https://instagram.com/davehemp Website: https://ambrosia.church/ Mention: https://zidedoor.com/ If you want to learn more about this work, in addition to Dave who is a fantastic resource, I feel I would be remiss to not mention the work of the late, great Kalindi Iyi. Kalindi's work was how I first learned about people working with high dose psilocybin, and was an inspiration to Dave as well. His talks on Youtube are fascinating, and should definitely be viewed if you are curious about this subject. 19 May 2022 | 32. Using journaling to integrate with Jenny Dion | 00:54:02
Journaling is one of the most powerful ways to integrate our work with psychedelics, and really any changes you are trying to make in your life. I recently found this out on a retreat - during a journaling activity some strong energy from a journey I had over a year ago came up and has been calling me to write more so that I can unpack it and really figure out what to do with it. My guest on this episode is no stranger to this practice - in fact she was moved to create a company that makes journals for inner exploration. Jenny Dion of Wakeful Travel is the creator of 2 amazing integration journals, one focused on specific psychedelic journeys and another on a microdosing protocol. These journals are really cool - incorporating art therapy, preparation and more that Jenny gets into in the interview. We also get into how to work with challenging experiences, the power of intention and consistency in your practice, different integration ideas (in addition to journaling), the magic of 5MEO, set & setting recommendations, and future psychedelic journals that Jenny has in the works. 13 Jan 2024 | 88. Cannabis IS a Psychedelic: Healing & Holding Space with Daniel McQueen | 01:15:58
This week's podcast episode covers some fascinating territory in the emerging realm of psychedelic-assisted therapy with Daniel McQueen, MA. Daniel is a Psychedelic Specialist, Psychedelic Therapy Educator, Activis and the co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Medicinal Mindfulness, one of the first legal psychedelic plant medicine centers in the United States. Daniel joins me to discuss working with cannabis as a psychedelic in a therapeutic setting, a major topic in his book Psychedelic Cannabis. Daniel specializes in using Cannabis-Assisted Psychedelic Therapy and we learn that with the right strains and dosages, cannabis can open up and soften areas of stored emotional pain and memory, allowing them to be processed and integrated. The conversation then shifts to what it takes to be an effective psychedelic guide. The therapist emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, compassion, and the ability to hold space. A psychedelic guide should remain grounded and centered, creating a safe container for the psychedelic experience to unfold. Their role is to facilitate healing, not direct or control. The episode wraps up with a discussion of the art of holding space during a psychedelic session. This requires being fully present with the patient’s process, without judgement or attachment. The guide must allow the experience to unfold naturally, trusting in the wisdom of the psychedelic plant medicines. Afterwards, the guide helps the patient integrate insights and lessons from the session into their life. This thoughtful episode illuminates key principles and practices for utilizing psychedelics therapeutically to catalyze healing. There are several ways to connect with Daniel’s work in Colorado and online: medicinalmindfulness.org - psychedelicsittersschool.org https://www.instagram.com/medicinalmindfulness/ https://www.instagram.com/danielkmcqueen/ Host Jonathan Schecter is a breathwork facilitator and integrative specialist. Jonathan Schecter’s interest in the transformative power of the breath is driven by his own healing journey. After practicing meditation and mindfulness in the Zen and Tibetan Buddhist traditions for almost 20 years, he rediscovered breathwork during a dark night of the soul and was amazed at the impact the practice had on his life. After exploring several types of breathwork and working to create his own system, he found Neurodynamic Breathwork and completed an extensive facilitator-training program that was equal parts breathwork, deep personal development, and training in how to hold space for expanded states of awareness and support others through authentic presence. This training, combined with lessons learned integrating his own extensive experiences with plant medicine helped Jonathan launch his brand “Blue Magic Alchemy ” that provides 1:1 integration and transformation coaching, a podcast, breathwork and meditation circles, and information to support grounded exploration into altered states of consciousness.

07 Sep 2023 | 75. The Alchemy of Naming: Outer, Inner & Secret Meaning of Blue Magic Alchemy | 00:22:53
Dive into the origin story of my brand and community Blue Magic Alchemy according to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition of three distinct meanings: outer, inner, and secret. The outer meaning of the name is rooted in alchemy and the transformative power of breathwork highlighting my focus on helping individuals harness the power of their breath to bring about personal transformation. Moving on to the inner meaning ,it is revealed that mushrooms play a significant role. It is worth noting that the hallucinogenic substance found in mushrooms turns blue when the mushroom is bruised. Lastly, the secret meaning of Blue Magic Alchemy involves transpersonal experiences with blue deities such as the Medicine Buddha and Shiva. These experiences are deeply personal and transformative, reflecting the work that goes beyond the surface level and into the realm of spirituality and higher consciousness. I am truly grateful for your support and the connections that we are building in community. Sign up for my newsletter at www.bluemagicalchemy.com to stay in the loop on the current breathwork and integration offerings. I am taking new clients for a six-week Breathwork for Integration coaching program, where you’ll learn multiple dimensions of awareness, regulation and expansion with your breath as well building a consistent practice for your personal growth. In conclusion, Blue Magic Alchemy is a company with a name that holds multiple layers of meaning. The outer meaning is related to alchemy and breathwork, while the inner meaning revolves around mushrooms and their transformative power. The secret meaning involves transpersonal experiences with blue deities and reflects the nature of the integration work that we are sharing together.

Dave Hodges is the founder of The Church of Ambrosia and Zidedoor in Oakland - which is a nondenominational, interfaith religious organization that supports the use and safe access of all Entheogenic Plants, with a focus on Cannabis and Sacred Mushrooms. We also talk about: -The evolving state of psychedelic legalization and decriminalization and where it may be headed -The value in high dose work -How Dave came to understand this research was needed through his own experiences -Responsible and safe work with Sacred Mushrooms -The spiritual and therapeutic benefits of working with entheogenic plants For those interested in working with Sacred Mushrooms and other Entheogens, The Church of Ambrosia and Zidedoor offer a wealth of resources, as well as a safe and supportive environment to embark on their journey of inner exploration. 19 Oct 2023 | 81. Rave Rituals: Community, Healing, and the Ecstasy of Dance with Taylor Bratches | 01:50:01
Dive into the rhythmic world of raves as containers for exploration with Taylor Bratches, a multifaceted DJ, writer, energy healer, and psychedelic guide from Boulder, CO. When I attended the MAPS Psychedelic Science Convention earlier this year, I attended Taylor’s talk on Rave as Ritual and it truly sparked my interest in exploring the subject deeper since raving has been such a big part of my own healing journey. We discuss the transformative power of raves, painting them as modern-day rituals that foster community, healing, and profound self-discovery. Dissecting the often-misunderstood realm of "recreational" psychedelic use, we explore the need for an open and curious mindset, urging listeners to move beyond judgment and recognize the potential of raves as catalysts for spiritual growth. Dance, as Taylor passionately describes, is more than just movement; it's a potent tool for trauma release, embodiment, and tapping into unparalleled states of joy. When combined with psychedelics, the dance floor becomes a sacred space for spiritual awakenings and profound energetic healing. This episode not only celebrates the ecstasy of dance but also highlights how rave experiences are pioneering the evolution of new healing modalities and practices. 12 Jun 2022 | 35. Exploring Meditation with Jimmy Wightman | 01:12:26
This episode is all about one of my favorite transformational practices - meditation and is a great start if you're new to meditation and have ever been curious about it but maybe have felt overwhelmed about where to begin or felt like you can't do it.
My guest is that_meditation_guy on IG, Jimmy Wightman.
Jimmy is a meditation teacher and genuinely wonderful person, and I really enjoyed getting to know him a bit and learning more about his story and practice.
We talked about the similarities in our journeys in how we found meditation - both of us had a common experience of being involved in the dance music & clubbing scene before discovering meditation and being able to get deeper in to our minds in a more connected way.
Jimmy shared how his curiosity with mindfulness eventually led him to find a teacher who taught him meditation in the Vedic tradition, which entails using a mantra and how that was where he found his meditation home.
We talked about getting started on the path, and some of the common experiences and challenges that people often have when starting meditation and how to navigate those.
We talked about how meditation calms the nervous system and the impact of that in our meditation experience, and we also talked about the meditation experience expanding "off the mat" as our practice progresses and how that is a motivator to keep practicing.
Jimmy was kind enough to offer a simple meditation practice that you can use as well...it starts around the 42 minute mark.
Definitely follow Jimmy and check out his offerings to learn more about meditation.

Dr. Ryan Westrum is the author of The Psychedelics Integration Handbook, founder of Healing Souls and host of The Psychedelic Psychologist podcast. With over 20 years working in mental health, he combines traditional therapeutic methods with holistic, intuitive therapies that empower you to take charge of your life and mental health. Ryan and I explore the intersection of psychedelics and mental health and the experience of integrating the cosmic perspective and insights that can come from psychedelics with the grounded embodied experience of human life and how that has shaped his work in the mental health field. How do we bring curiosity and grace to our medicine experiences, and how can we embody this in all aspects of life? One area of discussion is the importance of patience and a willingness to meet medicine and transformational work where we are, while acknowledging their potential to help us change. We also explore how many psychedelic integration practices are helpful in a broader context of self-care, as well as the healing work with psychedelics in order to cultivate a more grounded and mindful approach to daily life.
