22 Jul 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Becky Taylor Episode | 01:06:02
Caffeinators, buckle up! This is another good one! We had self-described disrupter Becky Taylor by the Vet Tech Cafe! She is doing some amazing things up in Canada, and has been for a very long time-she's a vintage vet tech, like us! She's a communication nerd with a Master's Degree in Professional Communication, and has gone so far as so start her own business, BS Communication Strategies (wait till you hear the story about that name!). She teaches people to communicate better through an evidence-based, interactive approach. This was an incredibly fun discussion-don't miss out! 05 Sep 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Meg Harrington Interview | 01:04:55
Caffeinators, if you crave greater utilization in your career, this is THE episode you need to listen to. Meg Harrington, BS, CVT, came by the Vet Tech Cafe recently. You may know her from her Facebook page, The Cattle Vet Tech, and we wanted to talk to her about all things large animal medicine as she is the first applicant for the VTS in production animal medicine through AIMVT. Through that conversation, she discussed her level of utilization and how her state practice act in Arkansas was recently updated help address the veterinarian shortage in her state through CVT utilization. Arkansas is one of the very few states that actually recognizes VTS's in its practice act, and she talked about an initiative that is aiming toward elevating the VTS position to the mid-level practitioner that is so en vogue right now. How did they do it? You'll have to tune in to find out, but we promise you'll be glad you did. And guess what? Through their research, DVM's in her state support it. State VMA's, VMB's, and VTA's-how can we follow in the footsteps of Arkansas?

09 Jan 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Sandra Tucker Episode | 00:55:51
Happy New Year, Caffeinators! We hope you had a great holiday season and a safe New Year! We are starting off 2023 with an awesome episode. We've said before some of our favorite episodes are those that are brought to our attention by a listener-episode topics we would've never thought of, let alone know who to talk to about it. That's what this episode is, and it's about disability and accessibility. Sandra Tucker reached out to us to suggest an episode discussing disability in our field and thankfully for us, and you, she was willing to talk about it. Sandra is a veterinary technician student in a distance learning program and discussed her experience with working in a hospital setting in a wheelchair. She discusses some of the stigma that many of us have, that disability = incapability, but she shows us where the error in that thinking lies, and that she can lift the heavy dogs and do most, if not all, of what many in our field would guess she couldn't. We also discuss that with a few minor modifications, most hospitals would be wheelchair accessible, and several other very interesting topics. As Sandra says, let her be the one to tell you what she can and can't do! 18 Oct 2021 | Vet Tech Cafe - Liz Hughston Episode 3 | 01:20:44
Caffeinators-can you believe we're embarking on our 3rd year of the Vet Tech Cafe? If you've been with us from the beginning, you already know who our next guest is, and why. Liz Hughston is so many things to so many of you, and that's no different for us. Her passion for the field, mentorship, leadership, friendship, and so much more is why we keep coming back to her to start each new year. There are not many of our colleagues in touch with such a wide swath of the profession as Liz, so who better to check in with each year? We went a little off-script with this one-actually, we went without a script! We just had a natural, organic conversation about the state of the profession and different trends or concerns we all have about where we're at and where we're headed, which is the heart and soul of the Vet Tech Cafe. So whether you are Team Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice, or if you ride the Pumpkin Spice Boo Train, take the next stop at the Vet Tech Cafe and join us! 02 May 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Amber LaRock Episode #2 | 00:58:07
Hey Caffeinators, welcome to our series for Mental Health Awareness Month, May 2022. Our episodes this month will be centered around substance abuse and addiction as it relates to members of our profession. Our first episode is with a previous guest you may remember, Amber LaRock, LVT. Amber was a guest in our first year, where she talked about living and working abroad. Through her work and her social media channels, she's been very honest and outspoken regarding her struggles with mental health and alcoholism and she was gracious enough to have this conversation with us, for you, to kick off our May series. In this episode, we discuss her struggle with alcoholism and how that led to abuse of other substances, what led to that, the difficulties of this profession and the role that played, and then finally, her path to sobriety and what that period of her life has looked like. We ponder how prevalent this may be in our field as often in hindsight, signs were visible, but in the present may not be so obvious. We think this is an episode that will hit home for a lot of people. Please visit the resources below if you, or a loved one (and tune in for our next episode if that applies to you), is struggling with addiction and needs help. Seize the awkward and start the conversation. Caffeinators, it's time for our monthly checkin from the Vet Tech Taproom. Have you checked in with yourself lately? We got together to discuss a couple things for this episode, mostly what happens when an owner has a bad experience or negative outcome at the hospital and threatens to go "public"-meaning social media or the news? How do you or your hospital respond? We give our analysis of what we see happen most frequently, and then openly discuss what we think should happen. What do you think? We cover other ground here too, so download today and join the conversation!
27 Jun 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Dr. Andy Roark Episode | 01:21:44
Caffeinators-are you ready?! If you're at all active on social media, you're familiar with Dr. Andy Roark. Be it for Uncharted, the Cone of Shame podcast, or just his funny posts, if you've found us, you're probably familiar with him. We don't interview many veterinarians at the Vet Tech Cafe, and there's a reason for that. We want to discuss issues in OUR field with leaders IN our field. There are occasions though when those issues may involve DVM's and that's where this episode stems from. We all know Dr. Andy Roark highly values his entire veterinary team, including his veterinary technicians. In this episode, we found out why that is and why it's important to him to educate his DVM colleagues about it, why technician utilization is so important to him, and how it can really benefit his colleagues, but then we also discuss how to build the trust in that relationship from our side. Because let's be real-just because we are credentialed technicians don't mean DVM's should trust us to do everything on our first day. We certainly don't trust brand-new DVM's in that manner, do we? This is a very wide-ranging episode with loads of golden nuggets sprinkled throughout. We really think you'll enjoy this one!

18 Apr 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Rhonda Bell Episode | 01:02:32
We've met a lot of people at the Vet Tech Cafe we likely wouldn't have crossed paths with for any other reason, and one of those is our latest guest, Rhonda Bell. Rhonda is a former veterinary assistant who became a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager, but had to pivot her career due to a medical diagnosis and go in a new direction. As a result, Dog Days Consulting was born and Rhonda takes us through that journey. She also gives us some unique insight into the veterinary technician profession through her lens from the "outside". The bulk of the episode is spent discussing branding-what that means for both individuals and hospitals, how to start, tips and tricks, and common pitfalls as well. Think having a "brand" isn't for you? Spoiler alert-you're building your "brand" every day and she explains how and why it's important to realize that. You're really gonna like this one. 23 Aug 2022 | Vet Tech Taproom Episode 21 | 00:26:56
Welcome back to the Vet Tech Taproom! We were recently in Austin, Texas, for a couple days doing some strategic planning as we approach the start of or 4th year! We took the opportunity to record a live taproom episode together, in which we discuss many of the cool new things we're working on and how we hope to make our next year the best yet. We put a question out to our Patreons about how we could improve their experience and one of the suggestions was to have them be a guest on an episode of the Vet Tech Taproom sometime. So stay tuned-that may be coming, along with cool new merchandise, regular taprooms at the beginning of every month, and some additional really cool stuff.

07 Feb 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Rachelle Pastorkovich Episode | 00:54:35
This was a special episode for Jeff. Rachelle Pastorkovich, RVT, was a former student of his when he was an adjunct professor at what was then Professional Veterinary Assistant School. Rachelle graduated from that tech school in 2011 and has worked in general and specialty practice. To pursue her love of wildlife, she volunteered for local wildlife organizations and also worked for a local veterinarian who did a lot of work for local zoos and wildlife and bird of prey rehabilitation. From there, she pivoted and began working at Sea World as an RVT in 2018, and is set to start a new role at the Safari Animal Park in early 2022. In this episode we discuss her path and work at Sea World, and what it looks like to work in marine mammal medicine. We examine developing the skills needed for working with those species as they're not animals commonly discussed or taught in veterinary technician school. This led to some fascinating discussion comparing and contrasting skills and anatomy of different species. We think you'll enjoy this one-we sure did! Mele Kalikimaka, Caffeinators! We hope you're having a wonderful holiday season. We're really excited to bring you our next episode with Sam Geiling, RVT. Sam has accomplished some pretty incredible things in the veterinary technician profession in Hawaii. Since moving there several years ago, she has created the only AVMA-accredited technician program in the state and still teaches there. Additionally, she created, and still works with, the Hawaiian Veterinary Technician Association, HVTA. We chatted with her recently about those endeavors, and also about her current project she's working on getting off the ground called Vet Med Masterminds. She hopes this group will be a means to help bring ideas into action and create meaningful change in the veterinary technician space. Hello Caffeinators, we hope you're well! We're bringing you our next episode with Garnetta Santiago, MA, LVT to talk about diversity, equity, and inclusion in our field. If you heard our recent episode with Harold Davis (if not, why not? Download it now!), Garnetta was his recommendation for who we should interview next. Garnetta is currently the Manager of Academic and Professional Affairs for Zoetis, driving strategic engagement with Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Technology programs throughout the US and Caribbean. She talked to us about her work and some of the different programs that are available for DEI training. We discussed the larger scope of where we're at currently on these issues, where we've come from, and areas where we can continue to improve. Many of the points she makes really made us think and it was wonderful to continue this conversation we started in 2020. We could've talked to Garnetta for hours, and we hope this was just the first episode with her so we can dive deeper into some of these points soon! 13 Jun 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Alli Butler Episode | 01:02:13
Caffeinators, have you ever had an idea for a veterinary product or invention but you had know idea to make that a reality? Or perhaps an improvement on an existing product that you know could be better but never knew what to do? Then this is the episode for you! As veterinary technicians, we're quite resourceful and possess great powers of ingenuity when it comes to connecting tubes to machines, or just making stuff work. That's where Alli Butler, RVT, with MILA International comes in! Jeff worked with her for a couple years at the veterinary school at Tufts University while Alli was working on her biomedical engineering degree. She has since been hired as a biomedical engineer at MILA working on these exact things-how to create products that will make our jobs easier. This discussion takes us through her path to MILA (you'll love this story!), what her job looks like there, projects she's working on, and the incredible CE program they've started. If you're going to be at ACVIM later this month, make sure to stop by the MILA booth and say hi to Alli and let her know you heard her on the Vet Tech Cafe and thank them for supporting veterinary technicians! 21 Feb 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Lorelei D’Avolio Episode | 00:55:23
Hey Caffeinators, have you ever wondered how the veterinary technician specialty academies are formed? Are you interested in becoming a VTS at some point? Have you considered what it looks like to START a new academy? Well, then don't miss this episode with Lorelei D'Avolio, LVT, VTS (CP-Exotic Companion Animal), CVPM! This was a fascinating discussion about the formation of academies, as she's a founding member of the AVTCP and the current Chair of the CVTS (Committee of Veterinary Technician Specialties). This committee is responsible for overseeing current academies and reviewing proposals for aspiring academies. We've spent several episodes highlighting many of the VTS academies currently in existence (with more on the way-SPOILER ALERT!) but it was great to have a discussion about how those academies are formed and maintained, and also just hear all the amazing things Lorelei has done in her career and still continues to be motivated to do! 20 Nov 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Veterinary Viewfinder Collaboration | 00:48:23
Hey Caffeinators, welcome back to another episode of ... the Veterinary Viewfinder?! That's right! If you've been listening to us the last few months, and the Veterinary Viewfinder podcast as well, we've both been dropping nuggets back and forth about how we handle all their complaints and they record in our basement and pick up your tab in the Taproom. It's all in good fun as they have been so kind and helpful to us over the years with advice and honestly just a good model to follow on how to do this. They reached out a while back to see if we wanted to do a mashup and of course we did! We got to know them a lot better, and them for us much the same, and just had a really fun conversation about who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Definitely check this one out-it was a lot of fun to head down to the basement for this episode. We really liked what they've done with the place. Make sure to follow the Veterinary Viewfinder!

19 Aug 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Sam Geiling Episode #2 | 01:11:18
Caffeinators, you may remember our episode from a couple years ago with Sam Geiling, where we talked about her work starting a vet tech program in Hawaii, helping form a Hawaiian vet tech association, and much more. Well, she's back! We had a great conversation about her current work with the Government Relations Committee for NAVTA, moving back to the mainland to Minnesota, and her new work with Animal Policy Group and some of the controversy surrounding that. When we think about laws that are enacted that shape our profession, there is often YEARS of work put into it by several people, and this was a fascinating look into a small part of that process. 10 Jun 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Erica Emmett Episode | 01:10:26
Caffeinators, you'll want to tune in for this one! We first started talking with Erica Emmett over two years ago about being a guest on our show, and as always, life happens. We finally got to record this episode, and it was fascinating to hear the professional path she's taken in the two years since! She's started Fyr Consulting which focuses on individuals and team coaching for veterinary professionals. She's been in vet med over 25 years and she draws on her experience to make the teams she coaches even better! We're so glad it took us 2 extra years to connect because we got to learn about Fyr, which we wouldn't have previously. Sometimes things just work out!

In this episode of the Vet Tech Taproom we discuss the American Association of Critical Care Nurses standards for healthy work environments. These are human nurses that came up with this set of standards, but they are very relatable to the veterinary field. Well Caffeinators, it's that time of year again! It's time to check in with the NAVTA President and talk about all things NAVTA and what they're working on. This year, that's Ashli Selke, RVT, CVT! We spent some time discussing her path, which she is incredibly authentic and transparent about. We also discussed the recent NAVTA demographic survey, title protection, the NAVTA Leadership Summit, and the Consumer Awareness Campaign they are working on, and SO much more. This episode goes a bit longer than most because we cover A LOT of ground in this one! We could've talked about so much more and for many more hours, but we got a really unique insight into the goings-on in our profession from a very macro level. Make sure you listen to this one-it is PACKED with tons of great discussion. 19 Sep 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Leslie Wereszczak Episode | 01:02:23
Caffeinators, let's continue the DVM-credentialed veterinary technician relationship and education discussions! This episode, Leslie Wereszczak, MS, LVMT, VTS(ECC) came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about these dynamics. Leslie has worked in academia at the University of Tennessee for over 30 years and has a unique insight into how the dynamic of the credentialed veterinary technician-DVM student/intern/resident/faculty relationship has evolved during that time as our abilities and knowledge base as a profession have expanded. We also looked into DVM education and the idea that if we were able to instill in them as students who we are and what we can do and our role in a practice, perhaps little by little, we can begin to turn the tide a bit more towards utilization. There's also a brief VNI update as Leslie is instrumental in that process as well. Another not-to-be-missed episode! 06 Feb 2023 | Vet Tech Taproom Episode 28 | 00:43:37
In this latest episode of the Vet Tech Taproom, we discuss the prospect of retirement. How many of us have even thought about retiring? How do we stay relevant and useful in this field as we get older. On that same note, we also discuss education and the needs of teachers (especially rookie teachers). We would love to hear your thoughts on both of these topics. Let us know what you think!
30 May 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Haesue Jo Episode | 00:56:33
As we wrap up our #mentalhealthawarenessmonth series, we thought it would be invaluable to talk with a mental health professional to finish off the series. Through our partnership with Better Help (link below), we were able to be put in contact with Haesue Jo, MA, and have a discussion about veterinary professionals, mental health, and substance use disorder from her perspective. In this episode, we discuss some of the unique traits of veterinary professionals that may pre-dispose them to mental health struggles and/or addiction, lax controlled substance monitoring in our field and the role that may play, and how to look out for concerning signs of addiction in our colleagues and actionable steps of what to do if that may be of concern-SPOILER ALERT- it isn't just confronting the person. We also discuss some of the resources that are available. This discussion was a perfect cap to our Mental Health Awareness Month Series for 2022, and we're grateful to Haesue for her time and her insight. Visit the links below for resources and information. 10 Jul 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Josh Vaisman Episode | 00:58:26
Caffeinators, hold on to your socks because this episode is going to knock them off! If you read veterinary publications with articles on workplace culture, you've probably read something written by Josh Vaisman. We were fortunate enough to have him come by the Vet Tech Cafe recently and, wow, was this an awesome conversation! Josh started out in veterinary medicine as a veterinary assistant, has been a practice manager and practice owner(!), and then went back to school and got his Master's Degree in Positive Analytical Psychology and Coaching Psychology and is now pouring his energy into improving workplace cultures and environments. He started Flourish Veterinary Consulting a few years ago providing consultation services for veterinary practices and most recently has a new book out called, "Lead to Thrive: The Science of Crafting a Positive Veterinary Culture". There are so really groundbreaking ideas in this episode-give it a listen and let us know what you think!

23 Jan 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Brian Goleman Episode | 00:55:12
Caffeinators, as you well know, we love to talk to credentialed technicians that are out there blazing their own path. For this episode, we had the pleasure of talking with Brian Goleman, RVT, owner and creator of Brian's Bandages! Brian is a surgery tech who came to realize there are not a lot of great resources or instructional videos for bandaging, and when opportunity knocked to create, Brian's Bandages was born! Links below will take you to his YouTube channel and social pages. He also teams up with http://bandage-art.com (link below) for vet wrap art, and he talked about how when owners see those patches on the bandages, they often take better care of the bandage to preserve the art! We swap some stories, horror and success, and the instructional part of wound management and bandaging, and the gaps in education that exist in that arena. 21 Mar 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Lori Balliet Episode | 00:55:55
Caffeinators, it's time to talk Clinical Pathology! As you're well aware, we want to talk to a representative of each VTS academy to talk about all the cool things technicians do in that specialty. We reached out to the Academy of Veterinary Clinical Pathology Technicians (AVCPT) and got in touch with Lori Balliet, CVT, VTS(Clin Path) to talk about all things clan path! This was a fascinating conversation centered around the work she did in designing the hospital laboratory she manages for a 40+ DVM practice, being the SECOND credentialed technician to have gained this VTS, and so much more about working in a lab. A lot of veterinary technicians do a lot of clinical pathology, and it's wonderful to hear from those that are making a career of doing just that! We think you'll really enjoy this one!

28 Nov 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Rebecca Giacomini Episode | 01:11:09
Caffeinators, you've heard of telemedicine. Have you heard of telementorship? Recently, Becky Giacomini, CVT, VTS(ECC) came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about her consulting firm she started called Veterinary Nursing Solutions, LLC, and the launch of their new product coming in 2023 called The Attending. This was a fascinating, and wide-ranging, conversation about the future of veterinary medicine and how we might start to see more and more services like this. Becky was also very forthcoming in her response to Dave's question about mental health and there is some sage advice in her response that applies to so many of us. It is so cool what some of you are doing out there-identifying a need in the veterinary medicine space and inventing a way to fill that need. 18 Sep 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Paige Allen Episode | 01:03:41
Caffeinators, you've heard us before say some of our favorite episodes are when listeners reach out to us with an idea and it turns it to an episode, often because it's something we hadn't thought of before or someone doing something awesome that we didn't know! That last part sums up this episode. Paige Allen, MS, RVT, wrote to us about some of the cool stuff she's doing IN RETIREMENT and we had to talk to her about that! Yes, she RETIRED as a veterinary technician from Purdue University and part of what she did was help to launch the distance learning portion of their vet tech program. How many people do you know that have done that? We talk about that journey, and then we pivot to what she's doing now, which includes co-editing the next version of McCurnin AND working with NAVC and their new HiVE event that will be held in Austin, TX in October which includes 2.5 DAYS of CE for ONLY $25! 02 Oct 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Tia Gregorio Episode | 01:00:58
Caffeinators, we are in the era of corporatization in veterinary medicine. Maybe you've already experienced working in a hospital that was bought by a corporation, maybe you're going through that process now, or maybe you haven't but chances are you probably will at some point. That is the focus of this episode. Tia Gregorio recently joined us at the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about corporate merging from the support staff side. Tia is a CVT and hospital manager, but also holds an MBA and a doctorate in business. Her doctorate is on medical leadership in the veterinary space-you'll love to hear about her research findings. We talk about what this process looks like from your perspective. What leverage do you hold? What should you expect? What can you ask for? What do you do if you don't like the change? All these and so many more of your questions will be answered!

08 Jan 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Darci Palmer Episode | 01:07:26
Caffeinators, are you a Veterinary Anesthesia Nerd? If so, you'll love this episode with the final part of the trifecta that is the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds, Darci Palmer. We ran into Darci at IVECCS and pitched the idea of her being a guest and thankfully she obliged because this is an awesome episode. Darci currently works in Anesthesia at Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, and that's where much of our discussion lies-veterinary education. But it doesn't stop there. She runs labs. She gives didactic lectures. She's not *just* an anesthesia tech-she designed this role to be what it is and it's incredible to hear the story. This was a fascinating discussion about how she's helping to shape these future veterinarians careers and also instilling in them the value of different staff roles and the value of credentialing. 17 Apr 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Alyssa Mages Episode | 01:04:34
Caffeinators, if your morning cup of coffee doesn't open your eyes, this episode surely will! Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT, recently came by the Vet Tech Cafe and knocked our socks off. We covered so much ground in this episode, but at the same time, every little thing we discussed could've been its own hour of discussion. She's a founder of Empowering Veterinary Teams, and that was where the bulk of the discussion lies-what that looks like, what they do, how it started... you know we love to talk about veterinary technician entrepreneurs! We covered training, utilization, and a whole host of other topics. She's also a Board member of Pawsibilities, and we cover that as well. Just listen, we promise you'll dig this one!

09 Aug 2022 | Vet Tech Taproom Episode 20 | 00:32:42
Caffeinators, welcome to our 20th Taproom episode and our 99th episode overall. You guessed it, that means our next episode will be our 100th! True to our style, we didn't even realize all of this so there is no mention of it at all in either of these two episodes, so we thought we'd mention it here. We want to thank each and every one of our listeners and guests for all of your support over these last THREE years! Without you, there is no Vet Tech Cafe! In this episode we discuss Dave's experience at the recent AVMA conference and how that conference compares to to what we know and love-IVECCS. There's also some additional interesting discussion you'll just have to tune in for to find out! All the best from the Vet Tech Cafe!
20 Feb 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Rochellie Cortés-Martínez Episode | 00:49:19
Caffeinators, did you hear who won NAVTA's 2022 Veterinary Technician of the Year Award? If not, look no further! It's Rochellie Cortés-Martínez, MBA, LVTg from Puerto Rico and she recently came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about the honor and life as a veterinary technician in Puerto Rico! This was a fascinating discussion in which we learned about the evolution of the profession there. She talked about how when she went through school not long ago, she attended the only veterinary technician program on the island, yet now, she is on faculty at one of SIX veterinary technician programs on the island! We discussed the legislative hurdles there, to which I'm sure many of us can relate. The discussion in this wide-ranging episode is not to be missed-we think you'll enjoy it as much as we did! 03 Oct 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Liz Hughston Episode #4 | 01:07:35
Caffeinators, can you believe it's already time to start our FOURTH year of this podcast?! And you know what that means - our annual check-in with Liz Hughston. She was our guest for our first episode, she kicks off each new year of our podcast, and she's been one of our biggest supports since we started. There are few people that fight for, and advocate for, our profession as much as Liz does, or are as in-tune with what is going on behind the scenes. So where does this episode take us? Down an interesting path of where she sees our profession right now and also some major updates on the unionization movement and her work with National Veterinary Professionals Union (link below). As we embark on our 4th year, we just want to thank all of you Caffeinators for joining us every other Sunday for a cup of coffee and discussion, for all of the episode and guest suggestions, all of our guests for their honest and thought-provoking ideas and discussion ... for everything. It's been an absolute blast to bring you the Vet Tech Cafe podcast, and there are big things in store for Year 4, starting now!

Caffeinators, are your people cat people? If so, then you probably know of Ellen Carozza. You may know her from her educational page on IG, @thecatlvt, as well. She has a VTS in feline medicine, one of the first to achieve it, and does incredible work with our feline friends. We chatted about the path the feline VTS, her amazing work with The Chris Griffey Memorial Feline Foundation, and SO MUCH MORE. This episode is not to be missed, especially if you love cats! 08 Aug 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Tasha Mcnerney Second Episode | 01:03:13
Hey Caffeinators, how are you finding life in vet med these days? That's basically what we asked our guest for this episode, the incomparable Tasha McNerney, BS, CVT, CVPP, VTS(Anesthesia) and just let the conversation go from there! You probably know her as an admin and creator for the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds Facebook page, or perhaps as the creator of the Veterinary Anesthesia Nerds podcast (definitely check that out if you haven't already!!), and she was previously a guest on the Vet Tech Cafe in August, 2020. For this episode there was no script, no discussion points we wanted to hit; just an organic discussion of where we're at right now and the exchange of some out-of-the-box ideas. A couple potentially paradigm shifting thoughts from this episode include the idea of a production-based pay scale for veterinary technicians, the abandonment of conference proceedings, and so much more! You'll have to tune in to hear the explanations, rationale, and additional ideas! Join us, won't you? We'd love to hear your thoughts! 21 Aug 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Kate Howard Episode | 01:06:34
Caffeinators, have you ever peaked over the clinic fence and wondered what is out there in the great beyond? If you've been listening in, you know we've done several episodes about being a veterinary technician outside of the clinical setting, but staying under the veterinary medicine umbrella-and this is another one of those episodes! We recently met Kate Howard, LVT at the Vet Tech Cafe and talked about her path through vet med, mental health struggles, and how those led her down a different path with Instinct! You may have heard of Instinct before, as it is one of the premiere veterinary software companies around. Did you know they employ veterinary technicians? If your first thought is, "well I can't do that, I'm not good with computers" then listen up! You do not need a computer science degree or knowledge of systems analysis for this role. Grab a cup of coffee and let Kate give it to you straight. You'll be glad she did.

19 Oct 2023 | Vet Tech Taproom Episode 35 | 00:45:16
Happy Vet Tech Week, Caffeinators! What does that mean anymore? We delve into a couple of recent nuggets of content we've come across and have a discussion about those, and what we'd like to see. What does Vet Tech Week look like for you? Does your hospital celebrate Vet Tech Week and the days and weeks set aside for the other vital members of our teams, such as CSR's, assistants, bossed, etc? Or is it largely a staff appreciation week? How do you feel about all of it? We'd love to hear from you. Links to what we discussed below!

Happy New Year from the Vet Tech Taproom! We briefly discuss our "resolutions" for 2024 and encourage you to post yours in the comments! We review a couple of our recent episode and preview a couple forthcoming ones as several of them revolve around veterinary technician education. We also look at NAVTA's list of nominee's for Veterinary Technician of the Year, a couple of whom we've been fortunate enough to have as previous guests on the Vet Tech Cafe! We also look at "3 must reads" from VMX courtesy of DVM360, linked below. Again, 2 of the 3 we've been fortunate enough to interview previously, the third will take some doing to make happen, and you'll see why.
10 Jan 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Teri Kleist Episode | 01:08:19
Happy New Year, Caffeinators! There are episodes of the Vet Tech Cafe that we plan and plan and plan, and there are those that just come together and the conversation flows better than we could've imagined. Our next episode with Teri Kleist, CVT, VTS(Surgery) is more the latter. We "met" Teri two days before we recorded but the conversation was as though we'd known her the duration of our careers! As we aim to spotlight all of the VTS academies, we finally got to talk to Teri with an assist from Heidi Reuss-Lamky. Teri is a past President of NAVTA, has done all sorts of committee and organizational work in our field, but she's also a charter member of the AVST and that's where we focused our discussion. After 40 years, she retired from clinical practice in late 2021, but is still very active. We learned about the formation of AVST, the application process, and what a surgical technician does and we found it all very eye-opening. We know it's cold outside, but it's comfortable in here, we have lots of beverages to warm you up, so let us pour you something great and bring you into the discussion. We think you'll like this one! 01 Apr 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Simon Chavez Episode | 01:00:26
Caffeinators, have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a traveling veterinary technician? Maybe have a home base, but otherwise constantly on the road traveling to all corners of the US and working relief? Then have we got an episode for you! Our friend Simon Chavez recently stopped by one of our locations-it may have been Chicago, Boston, or Anchorage, we're not sure-but we had a very interesting conversation on what life and a career look like as a locum technician! We talked about how Simon built his network of hospitals he does most of his relief at, how he builds his schedule, getting started, taxes, travels, licensing, all of it. We literally circled the map in this discussion, and we're sure that in the time since we recorded this episode, Simon has re-circled the US again as well! Oh, and we also talk about his traveling sidekick, Bruce Wayne!

30 Oct 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Dani Provost Episode 2 | 01:11:54
Caffeinators, this is a bit of a heavy topic. By and large, our field has been immune to layoffs. That's not to say they haven't happened in the past, but certainly not by the hundreds or thousands we've seen major companies go through. This episode is focused on layoffs. Dani was a trainer for a corporation, a role that was created specifically for her that she thrived in, and was recently told her position had been eliminated. WHAT?! Could you imagine your path to processing such a thing? That's the focus of this episode-how it happened, how she dealt with it, and how she is coming out the other side even better off. This episode is filled with laughter (perhaps awkward and misplaced), tears, and excitement. Layoffs may never be on the large scale in veterinary medicine as they are with other companies, but with the corporatization of veterinary medicine, they are likely here to stay and are unfortunately becoming part of our reality. Buckle up, Caffeinators, we're about to encounter some turbulence.

25 Jul 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Heather Carter Episode | 00:58:20
Caffeinators, we've talked ad nauseam on this podcast about burnout, turnover, and the like. Recently, Heather Carter, LVT, VTS(A&A) reached out to us wanting to discuss these issues from another angle, and WOW are we glad she did! Heather also has a Master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and we spend this hour discussing how looking at these issues through that lens can lead to tangible change! This is a fascinating discussion on many fronts, specifically the idea of a "stay" interview and how that differs from an annual review, and analyzing what makes teams succeed and how that can be applied in recruiting new employees! Definitely give her recent article in Today's Veterinary Nurse (link below) titled "Turnover: Identifying Causes and Solutions" a read and give this episode a listen. After you do, ask yourself: How can I use industrial and organizational psychology to help improve my practice!

05 Feb 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Ralia Cortinas Episode | 01:04:22
Caffeinators, we need more personality in our field. We need young minds and fresh faces with big goals to grow into the roles many of us currently occupy, and Ralia Cortinas may just be one of those people that checks those boxes. Ralia is currently a student in the Distance Learning program through Purdue University, but the credentialing process is clearly very important to her. We talk a lot about her being an OJT assistant in Texas and some of her DVM colleagues views of that, while also looking forward to the future. Ralia reminds us how important it is to have hobbies OUTSIDE of vet med-no, going home and caring for a house/farm full or pets and critters doesn't count. 11 Jul 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Dani Provost Episode | 01:01:31
The focus of this episode is life as a veterinary technician with chronic disease. We had a few guests recently, and a few email requests for an episode with this kind of topic. Dani has been very open about her battle with fibromyalgia, and then post-COVID, which she had this past Christmas, she developed another condition called Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. We talked about the path to finding the diagnoses, those difficulties, and how that has changed her career path. Caffeinators, if you are dealing with chronic health issues or know someone who is, this is the episode for you. 14 Nov 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Leslie Boudreau Episode | 01:05:15
Caffeinators, many of us "end up" in management in some fashion-head technician, supervisor, shift lead, etc, but is that really a path that interests you or is it something you do to fill a need, or perhaps earn an extra shift differential? The reality is, hospital management is AT LEAST a full time job, and arguably more! For this episode, Leslie Boudreau, BASVT, RVTg, CVPM, PHR, PHRca, SPHR, came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk not just about management, but the path to that. Leslie is an RVTg (she explains the 'g') in California that decided management was her path, put the work in to obtain her CVPM, and additional human resources certifications as well. So we talked to her specifically about that transition from RVT to management, and the RVT-manager relationship and dynamic, and how we can bring more to the table knowing she has been on both sides of the table. As always, it was a robust and fascinating conversation! The weather is turning cold for many of you, so let us pour you a hot cup of coffee so you can join the conversation! 15 Nov 2021 | Vet Tech Cafe - Jordan and Yvonne, IMFVT | 01:04:57
If you listen to the Vet Tech Cafe podcast, there's a good chance you listen to other veterinary podcasts. If you haven't listened to Internal Medicine for Vet Techs with Jordan Porter, RVT, LVT, VTS(SAIM) and Yvonne Brandenburg, RVT, VTS(SAIM), you should start. Each week, they put out a new episode discussing myriad diseases in the small animal internal medicine world. They interject some great humor and many take home points and concepts for the patients we treat everyday. They've built an incredible online community of fellow med-heads, and after starting their podcast right around the same time we did, we finally got to have them come to the cafe for a cup of coffee and discussion of all things IMFVT. If you're unfamiliar, check out the links below; or better yet, download their podcast on any major podcast platform today! You definitely won't regret it. We've long referred to them as our podcast sisters because we started at the same time and found each other during the development phase of our podcasts and shared ideas and collaborated several different times. This week, we got to shine the spotlight on them and we couldn't be more proud to call them friends and colleagues, or be more proud of what they've built. Nicole Dickerson has been working in the Bay Area as a registered veterinary technician for the last 11 years. Before then, she worked as a free-lance Equity stage manager for theatres such as Berkeley Repertory Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theatre, and Teatro Zinzanni. After working with cats and dogs in emergency and specialty hospitals for the majority of her career, Nicole recently transitioned into laboratory animal medicine, and now supervises a veterinary technician team through work with multiple species. She serves on the CVMA’s House of Delegates and RVT Committee, has been published in the NAVTA journal, hosts the podcast "Cat Disgusted," and is honored to have traveled to Puerto Rico as a volunteer anesthetist for the Humane Society of the United States’ Spayathon for PR. 15 Apr 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Jennifer Gunther Episode | 01:03:27
Caffeinators, are you ready to have your mind blown? We've long thought it's time to rethink veterinary technician education, and many out there agree. Thankfully, Jennifer Gunther is someone that is out there doing it. She's been an educator at Denver Community College's vet tech program for 20+ years, and they have recently started an apprenticeship program that exists separately and in addition to their standard, 2 year AVMA accredited program. But here's the deal: It's not an alternate route/alternate pathway. They still graduate with a 2 year degree, it's still AVMA approved, they just work 30 hours a week at an approved hospital and do the education part remotely. Jennifer discusses all the ins and outs of an apprenticeship program, and the hoops they had to go through with the US Department of Labor to get approval, along with vetting the hospitals and applicants, and SO MUCH MORE. She talks challenges and the uniqueness of the program-it is the FIRST and ONLY so far in the US! Is this the future of veterinary technician education? Take a listen and let us know what you think.

01 May 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Tom Seeko Episode | 00:59:53
Caffeinators, let's get weird. Let's talk money. We all want it. We all need it. What do we do with it? We can all attest to the fact that this is low-earning profession. That makes many of us work additional jobs, leave the field altogether, etc. Considering all of that, what do you think of your financial well-being? We ask because that's the discussion for this episode. This is one of our few, non-veterinary technician guest episodes, but with a discussion we hope you'll benefit from. Tom Seeko joined us recently, and he is a financial consultant with a focus in veterinary medicine. Yes, most of his clients are practice owners and DVM's, but our focus was veterinary technicians. As an employee benefit do you receive retirement benefits? Do you know what they are or what to do with them, especially if you leave the practice? If your practice owner uses a financial advisory, have you discussed asking if they could offer that persons services to the staff as an employee benefit? This episode, and his website and podcast, are chock full of ideas and resources. Take your money back. Take control of your financial well-being. You can start here.

22 Jan 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Sydney Hoevet Episode | 00:57:59
Caffeinators, we talk about veterinary technician education all the time, but we don't often get to talk to the stakeholders-the students. Our next two episodes focus on that. First up is Sydney Hoevet, a student in the vet tech program at Portland Community College. It's always refreshing to look at our profession through fresh, less jaded eyes than our own. It's also really nice to hear the profession seems to be in good hands going forward. In this episode, we talk about a common link between Sydney and a previous Vet Tech Cafe guest that we didn't know about, what veterinary technician curriculum currently looks like and some of the struggles vet tech students face. A fun "aside" in this episode is that her twin sister is in human medicine and wanting to go to human nursing school and we talk about some of the similarities and differences there too! 15 May 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Heather Carter 2 Episode | 01:05:19
Welcome to #mentalhealthawarenessmonth, Caffeinators. If you've been following along for any amount of time, you know this is a special month for us. We dedicate all of our May episodes each year to mental health in veterinary medicine, and often to a particular theme. This year, that theme is bullying. We'll have episodes with two guests and discuss bullying in our field in great depth. For this episode, we welcomed back Heather Carter. We spoke with her last summer about organizational turnover, and for this episode we had her back to talk about bullying and how that affects the workplace, the individuals, and the culture of our workplaces. It's hard to envision how this happens and just how common this is in veterinary medicine, but if you haven't been directly affected, you probably know somebody who has or is battling with this right now. There is a lot to unpack and a lot to learn in these episodes.

16 Oct 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Liz Hughston Episode 5 | 01:08:36
Caffeinators, it's mid-October and that means it's an Anniversary here at the Vet Tech Cafe. We're celebrating our 4th complete year-can you believe it? We thought we'd be lucky if we put out 10 episodes, but here we are still going strong because of YOU and all of our amazing guests. It also means we get to chat with Liz Hughston again! This episode is extra special, because we recorded it LIVE with her at IVECCS in Denver last month! You'll hear some different sounds as we were literally in a hallway and a couple people stopped by the table to say "hi" not realizing we were recording! But that just adds to all the fun. Liz recently wrote an article (linked below) and that is where we spent the bulk of our time, just discussing where we're at and where we're headed. It's always great to get the insight from someone like Liz who is SO connected to every facet of the profession and someone with such a great pulse on what is actually going on out there. 07 Aug 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Kelly Foltz Episode | 01:09:40
Caffeinators, you are in for a TREAT. Recently, one of our favorite people came by the Vet Tech Cafe for some tea and conversation. Or, should we say collaboration? Listen to the episode and you'll see what I mean, but when Kelly Foltz talks, you best listen. Kelly is credentialed in FOUR states, a VTS(ECC), and currently the Mid-Atlantic Regional Nursing Partner for Blue Pearl, providing support to their hospitals in that region. This was a wide ranging discussion about her work on the AVMA task force for technician utilization, the working group thereafter, her work on the CVTEA and what that looks like, and veterinary education-from veterinary school to veterinary technician school. There was so much ground we covered in this one and there is still SO MUCH we didn't get to that we're going to have to have her back in the not too distant future to talk about her other projects.

Caffeinators, have we got a discussion for you! You may remember when we interviewed Dr. Andy Roark, his suggestion for a future guest was Melissa Entrekin, and she was gracious enough to join us at the Vet Tech Cafe for some wonderful discussion about our profession. This is a wide-ranging episode, from state association work to vet tech education to life in this field overall. There's a lot to unpack in this one, and we could've easily continued this discussion for hours-which only means we'll have to have her back on the show at some point. Oh! And, she was the 2021 NAVTA Vet Tech of the Year, which means we've had both recipients of the award on our podcast already in 2023! 18 Mar 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Doc Jim Hurrell Episode | 01:20:06
Caffeinators, if you've been listening in a while, you've heard several guests recommend Doc Jim when we ask who they think we should talk to. And guess what?! We got him! We don't often have veterinarians on our podcast, but there are those who are integral to our development as a profession and Doc Jim is certainly one of them! Holy cow was this episode fun! He is such a huge supporter "of our amazing profession" and we talk extensively about how he gave up practicing as a small animal veterinarian over 40 years ago to blaze the path of being involved in veterinary technician education. It's really mind-boggling what a trailblazer he was at that time. We talk a lot about vet tech education and how that's evolved and how the leadership in our field has evolved as well. This episode is as fun as it is fascinating. You don't want to miss this one!

04 Sep 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Dr Carrie Jurney and Stephen Cital Episode | 01:01:03
Caffeinators, this is a big one. Remember recently when we shared the Op-Ed Stephen Cital wrote about the position of the AVMA and their unwillingness to expand the scope of practice for veterinary technicians? Do you remember when we shared his recent post about his new business venture-Remedy Veterinary Specialists that he's starting with Dr. Carrie Jurney? Well, good news! They both came by the Vet Tech Cafe recently to talk about all of this. There's some really great info in here about the response to his letter and organizational response to the AVMA from AIMVT and NAVTA, and also from the DVM perspective of Dr. Jurney as well. After navigating that discussion, we pivot to all things Remedy and the vision for the new specialty hospital in the Bay Area of California. It is a gem. You do NOT want to miss this episode.

27 Nov 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Bill Wade Episode | 00:56:38
Hey Caffeinators! We're back to our regularly scheduled programming! We had some scheduling issues getting this episode recorded as it was supposed to be released on Veteran's Day here in the US. Why Veteran's Day, you ask? Because that's really the focus of this episode. Bill Wade started in the US Air Force in the 1970's, transferred to the US Army in the 1980's and worked as a veterinary technician all those years! He also was in organizational leadership as well, and at two separate times was President of what was then the North American Veterinary Technician Association, now NAVTA, when Canada was still a part of it before they split off to form their own associations. This was a fascinating discussion about what things looked like through a lens very few of us likely have had the opportunity to look through. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy this one!

03 Apr 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Anthony Pierlioni Episode | 01:07:16
Caffeinators, it's not often we have a guest that is not a credentialed veterinary technician. But when those opportunities present themselves, we make sure it's a discussion we think you'll benefit from, and this is certainly one of those. Anthony Pierlioni is a manager of a multi-specialty hospital in Connecticut. His background isn't in veterinary medicine-it's in social work. We've have a couple episodes in the past where we've discussed the benefits of having a social worker on staff in vet med, and this is a step in continuing that discussion. He talks about his unique experience and viewpoints as someone who is not a career vet med head, and how different personalities in management and staff, as well as differences in skills and many other things could, and should, be leveraged to get the very best out of the team. Finally, he's a TURTLE guy. Like, big time. He does some amazing education and work with sensitive species of turtles, has TWO of his own podcasts about turtles, and so much more, and we spend a lot of time talking about all that too! Really fun episode here that you don't want to miss!

05 Aug 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Liza Wysong Episode #2 | 01:03:20
Caffeinators, if you've been with us since the beginning, you may remember Liza Wysong as our guest for our 4th episode. We did things very differently back then (almost 5 years ago!) and a lot of has changed at the Vet Tech Cafe, and a lot has changed for Liza too! We checked in with her recently as she is now the program director for the brand-spanking-new veterinary technician program at Rowan College of South Jersey. 26 Jun 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Chong Su Via Episode | 00:59:29
Caffeinators, buckle your seatbelts for this one. We saw in a NAVTA newsletter a few months back a blurb about the formation of the Malaysian Association of Veterinary Nurses and Assistants, or MAVNA, and I knew right away we needed to talk to them. I emailed them and Su Via wrote back and this episode was born. She is a veterinary technician student through Purdue University's distance learning program and attends from her home country of Malaysia. She talks extensively about the role of the veterinary nurse and veterinary assistant in Malaysia, and let's just say if you think utilization is poor in the US, you're gonna want to hear what she has to say. But it is truly inspiring to hear her talk about her passion in improving that, starting MAVNA, and working to change the perception of these professionals in Malaysia and take the burden off of their veterinarians. Wow, this episode is an eye-opener.

Caffeinators, are you ready to be sassed? Do you wanna get snarky? Then you want to hear this episode with Stephen Niño Cital, RVT, SRA, RLAT, CVPP, VTS-LAM (Res. Anesthesia). We talk about where we are as the veterinary technician profession through his eyes and his passion for the field and the root of the sass! We also look at his recent article in TRENDS, discussing the VTS credential as a mid-level practitioner role. If you haven't read it, see the notes below for the link. We also talked about updates in cannabis therapy and a bit about the Veterinary Cannabis book he co-edited, link below. Lastly, when he was on our show last time, he talked about breaking through glass ceilings and we circled back to that to see how we're doing. ***SPOILER ALERT*** He wants YOU to start breaking those barriers! 16 May 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Cat Walker Episode | 01:06:56
Caffeinators, welcome back for the second episode in our Mental Health Awareness Month series, May 2022. For this episode, we caught up with Cat Walker, Bachelor of International Studies (Hons 1), Bachelor of Laws, Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, Registered Veterinary Nurse, from way down under in Australia! You may know Cat as Radio Vet Nurse, and Jeff has been a guest on her podcast. Cat's world turned upside down in late 2020, as her veterinarian husband battled substance use disorder. Cat talks about how she navigated, and continues to navigate, this difficult process and how things changed in the blink of an eye. She talks about his path forward, but also her own, and how her personal and professional life were altered as a result of his struggles. She discusses how getting help for herself was vital in her path forward and how the stresses she was experiencing as a result of all of this affected her health and wellness. This episode looks at substance abuse from a slightly different angle from our last episode, yet, still analyzes the veterinary field input on this problem. Newsflash: It's not just limited to struggles in this profession in the US. It's a global struggle. 27 May 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Julie Morse-Elliott Episode | 00:59:39
Caffeinators, welcome back to Mental Health Awareness Month! We're continuing this mini-series with Julie Morse-Elliott, RVT, VTS(ECC). She's had a long career as an RVT and is now pursuing registration as a professional counselor to aid those working in veterinary medicine. She is also in the midst of starting a foundation with a goal to provide free counseling to those that need support after experiencing workplace related trauma, and will be heading up the veterinary division of the foundation. This was a fascinating discussion to learn about the process and what the future may hold. Both of these episodes this month were great examples of RVT's finding a new passion later in their career, yet finding a way to make it fit under the veterinary umbrella and blaze a new path from which we will all benefit. These episodes are not to be missed!

Caffeinators, get your tea and biscuits ready because we're going across the pond for this episode! We recently sat down with Jack Pye, RVN, Cert VNECC, to discuss life as an RVN in the UK! Spoiler alert, as with many of our international series episodes, it's not unlike life as veterinary technician in the US! We talk about title protection, paths to licensure, legislation, specialization, the veterinarian-RVN relationship, and so much MORE! Jack now spends much of his time in Ultrasonography and teaching that to his veterinary nurse colleagues, and we talk about some of the uniqueness of that and the challenges he faces there, as well! 29 Apr 2024 | Vet Tech Cafe - Ashleigh Walsh Episode | 01:01:20
Caffeinators, pack your bags and fasten your seatbelts. We're going to where the water spins backwards. We're headed back to the Southern Hemisphere, specifically New Zealand! We met a wonderful Kiwi at IVECCS last year, Ashleigh Walsh, at the AVECCTN pinning ceremony. When we learned she was there from New Zealand we knew we had to have her on as a guest. It took until THIS WEEK to figure out the logistics as she's 19 hours and 16 hours ahead of Jeff and Dave, respectively. What an awesome conversation! We learned some things that blew our minds-did you know New Zealand doesn't have snakes? We talked so much about what it looks like to become an RVN in New Zealand, the fact that Ashleigh is the FIRST VTS(ECC) there, the profession and so much more. This episode is so much fun. Come for her accent, stay for her knowledge. We really enjoyed this one and we hope you do too!

07 Mar 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Jennifer Serling Episode | 00:54:48
I think we can all agree the veterinary technician model has needed some work for quite some time. The good news is there are people like Jen Serling, CVT, BVSc, AAS who are working on it. Jen brings over 30 years of experience in the field to her role as an educator and assistant program director for the new veterinary technician program at Appalachian State University. She has some really great insight into where things stand now and ideas looking toward the future. It was really refreshing to hear such passion and enthusiasm for teaching the future leaders of our profession. We discuss advanced credentials for veterinary technician educators, and a whole array of other topics as well. 13 Dec 2021 | Vet Tech Cafe - Harold Davis Episode | 00:52:53
Our guest today is someone who could be considered a pioneer for many of us in the industry. Harold Davis, Jr., RVT, VTS (ECC) (Anesth/Analgesia) sat down with us not too long ago and chatted about the development of the first VTS academies for ECC and Anesthesia. He was a charter member for both, and we took a deep dive into the formation of these academies. We wanted to know what the process looked like when there were no Facebook groups in which to communicate, how the process has evolved over the years, and we also wanted to know what the level of support or backlash was. As you can imagine, there was a bit of both. There are a lot of great stories in this one, but also a little bit of a "by looking back, how can we move forward?" flavor as well. Harold is now retired but continues to advocate and champion the profession in many ways. He still actively serves on various boards and committees serving the veterinary industry. 22 Aug 2022 | Vet Tech Cafe - Natalie Herring Episode | 01:04:06
Caffeinators, this one is SPECIAL. This is our 100th episode. Thank you so much for the support! OK, we all know a couple of "love it or hate it" areas in veterinary medicine for most of us. Be it anesthesia or surgery, emergency, dentistry, etc; we all have an area we don't particularly love. Another big one is eyeballs. So it's time to talk all things ophthalmology! Natalie Herring, LVT, VTS(Ophthalmology), recently came by the Vet Tech Cafe to talk about the formation of that VTS academy, her path to working in ophthalmology and a few tips and tricks for doing so, and some of the unique skills required to obtain a VTS in that discipline. We have found through our VTS discussion series that every Academy is unique in several ways, yet follows the same basic blueprint, and we always find it to be a fascinating discussion. Talking all about the path to a VTS in Ophthalmology was no different! Your favorite table in the cafe is available and ready for you so let us get you your caffeinated beverage of choice, sit back, and join us in the conversation about all things ophthalmology! Caffeinators, grab your passports because we're going back across the pond! For this episode, we sit down with Sieske Valk. Sieske reached out to us to talk about her business venture Autumn Animals, which specializes in at home applicative and hospice care. We discuss what hospice and palliative care look like both in the UK and the US, and how as a profession we aren't meeting these needs. Sieske has been an entrepreneur throughout her career in veterinary medicine and we talk about her path from where she was to now as a so-called "end of life doula". This was a fascinating discussion and another wonderful example of people in our field finding a niche that they are passionate about and where need meets opportunity and making it happen. Caffeinators, you know we love talking about veterinary technician education. We've looked at it from many different angles, and today there's another one. Jenn DeForge is a CVT in Massachusetts and reached out to us a while back and we finally were able to have her come by to discuss what she does in education. Get this-she teaches HIGH SCHOOL students! She works for a polytechnic school in Massachusetts teaching high school students in a program that upon graduation, they can become certified veterinary assistants. She talks about getting them in the pipeline of vet med a little earlier and teaching them the realities of the profession and all of the things you can do so that they have a more complete picture of veterinary medicine. Caffeinators, you know we've talked about veterinary technician education from several viewpoints, and we will continue to do so. This is another one of those episodes. Carrie Fellows in an RVT who was one of the first to graduate from LMU's recently started Master's program with a Master's Degree in Veterinary Clinical Care. We explored the program at length and it made for a fascinating discussion about where it could lead and what we do with it. As Carrie laid out, with the path her career has taken, the VTS path was never really for her but this program absolutely was. You're really gonna enjoy this one.

29 May 2023 | Vet Tech Cafe - Emily Ione-Kinney 2 | 01:04:35
Welcome back to #mentalhealthawarenessmonth Caffeinators! We're back for our second episode looking at bullying in veterinary medicine. You may remember way back to 2020 when we had Emily Ione-Kinney on to talk about bullying in vet med. She introduced us then to some terms we hadn't heard before such as lateral and vertical violence and some ways bullying occurs you might not think of. This discussion is a continuation of that one and goes a good bit further. We all discuss things we've done in our past that looking back are considered bullying and how we're learning from that. We talk about how to be open to having some of these difficult conversations and how to start them. Bullying in veterinary medicine is everywhere and we all need to step up to break the cycle because if we don't we're not gonna last.

Caffeinators, Merry Christmas and a very happy holiday season! As this episode is coming out on Christmas Day, we wanted to give you a special gift. We invited Stephen Cital and Liz Hughston back to the show for a bit of a roundtable discussion! But not to the Vet Tech Cafe, no. Not this time. This time, for the first time EVER, we had guests in the Vet Tech Taproom! What does that mean? Even more unedited and more uncut, and the video of this discussion will also be uploaded to our YouTube Channel! We wanted to discuss some of the hot button topics in our field right now, specifically the NAVTA elections and the election process and their recent survey regarding interest in a "mid-level practitioner" position, along with some recent TikTok buzz. You are in for a great episode! We really hope you enjoy it! Have a great holiday season and very Happy New Year-we'll see you bright and early in 2023! |
