Sabina "Sabs" Netherclift is a teaching fellow at GSA with over 20 years of movement experience. She has worked with many companies including the Young Vic, Central and the English National Opera. Her primary teaching point at GSA is the work of movement director Jacque Lecoq, having trained with the man himself in Paris. He also used masks to stimulate movement development and create characters. 30 Apr 2021 | David Barnett on Brecht | 01:15:58
David Barnett is currently Professor of Drama at the University of York. David's primary research point is the work of Brecht, and the Berliner Ensemble, he has written countless journal entries and articles about the foundations of Brecht's practice. Telling the reader, performer, and director, how you can apply them to a production, and for that matter, any existing play, and come up with a different angle depending upon the social contradictions that are hiding beneath the surface. We talk about three foundations of Brecht's work, GESTUS, HALTUNG, and, VERFREMDUNG. This conversation would be great for anyone who is studying Brecht at school or university, or for that matter, anyone who wants to know a little more about his work. 01 Jul 2024 | Rosie Sheehy Part 2 | Machinal at the Old Vic and Puck at the RSC | 01:07:41
The return of Rosie Sheehy! Fresh from her critically acclaimed performance of the Young Woman in Sophie Treadwell's "Machinal" at the Old Vic, Rosie returns to discuss her experience in the play and her unique take of Puck in A Midsummer Nights Dream at the RSC. Machinal is based on the true story of Ruth Snyder who was executed in the electric chair in 1928 after murdering her husband Albert with her lover Henry Jude Gray. A play talking about the dark side of human ambition, frustration and need for freedom. The Young Woman (Ruth Snyder) seeks to end her relationship with her abusive husband Albert and together they plot and successfully kill him. It's a commentary on how some human beings are pushed to the edge, what we are capable of and the lengths we'll go to to get away from an abuser. Rosie gave an stupendous performance of this highly demanding role on both an emotionally and physically level. She talks me through the challenges and rewards of the part, as well as the key part of her preparation and the warm down after the show. On top of this, since our last conversation she also did Puck at the RSC directed by Eleanor Rhode. She brilliantly discusses how she found her own version of the classic character and she made it her own. Such a pleasure as always Rosie, great to have you back! Andrew is a director and composer who has been involved in a variety of projects across the artistic industry. From plays, musicals, cabaret, opera, and ballet he is a man who loves the arts! I've had the pleasure of being taught by Andrew at GSA, looking at the play Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire, how to breakdown the text, learn lines mechanically, but not perform mechanically. Perform with one thought to the next, engaging and listening to your scene partner, and live in the moment without wondering what your next line is. Andrew discusses the work of Samford Meisner, his links to Stanislavsky, Stella Adler, and Lee Strasberg, and how actors achieve their best work through listening to each other. As well as, how he approaches projects through a director's lens, his love for music, and how he likes to see the world of a play come together. 07 Dec 2023 | Emilio Doorgasingh on A Little Life | 01:51:28
Emilio Doorgasingh is another member of the Little Life family playing “Andy”, Jude’s Doctor at the Richmond Theatre, Harold Pinter Theatre and Savoy Theatre this year. This episodes contains spoilers! His other credits include, for screen:
For stage:
Amongst many more… Emilio discusses his two huge theatre projects he’s been a part of this year, Best of Enemies (dir. Jeremy Herrin) and A Little Life (dir. Ivo Van Hove). With Best of Enemies he played multiple characters in James Graham’s play that explored the political landscape of the USA during the 1960s. From journalists to Gore Vidal’s (Zachary Quinto) life partner and the demands of a high fuelled energetic show with multiple costume changes and characters to jump between every night. For A Little Life he played “Andy” a doctor who has a difficult relationship with Jude (James Norton). Emilio talks about how he found the parallels of Andy’s character, how on one hand he’s a medical professional frustrated that his patient won’t take his advice, and on the other he’s a compassionate soul who doesn’t want to push his already deeply traumatised friend into something he doesn’t want to do. Stop hurting himself and get better. Emilio gave a stellar performance as Andy and in his many roles in Best of Enemies and it was a pleasure to talk to you sir! 24 Apr 2024 | Kate Godfrey Part 2 | Understanding Shakespeare | 01:41:54
The return of Kate Godfrey! Kate is an actress, voice coach and one of the leading Shakespeare experts of our time. She returns to the show to unpick some Shakespeare monologues with me. Showing how she works with actors one on one to find the meaning in the text, helping them with how verse speeches are written and to play them as best you can. Paying attention to the punctuation, how long or short a thought is, and asking what the sub-text/wider story is and why would they be saying the things they're saying now? All culminating in the actor knowing the best way to communicating the speech to their fellow actors or the audience alone whilst serving the text accurately. The two pieces we look at are: - Iago, from Othello: "Thus do I ever make my fool my purse" - Act 1 Scene 3. - Gloucester, from Henry VI Part 3" "I can add colours to the chameleon" Act 3 Scene 2. Kate takes me through both speeches and together we dissect the rhythm, identify the thought patterns, the motivations of the characters and uncover the best way to perform them. I loved this episode and I hope you watching/listening who are actors who love your Shakespeare got as much from it as I did. Keep a look out for our second Shakespeare analysis on the more comedic and light-hearted monologues coming soon, watch this space! Thank you again Kate, always a pleasure. 18 Apr 2022 | Chris Palmer on the Human Voice and its Power | 01:13:40
Chris is an inspirational voice teacher as well as person, and it was great to hear about her journey working with the voice. She is currently the Head of Voice at the Guildford School of Acting, with BA and MA's in Advanced Voice Studies. She works with actors, singers, and even politicians about how they can use their voices to their best effect. Her practice is all about learning from one another, what you can gain from each other from listening and observing from each others voices and traits in the rehearsal room, or indeed any circumstance in life! She takes me through the biology of the voice, what do to and what not to do when performing, and how to take care of it. The throat chakra and it connects the voice to the body. Significantly, how the voice is not just a sound from your voice box, it's a power that comes from every inch of your body. In addition, how you can empower it or detail it to any specific character. We also touch on deconstructing the challenges and reaping the rewards of tacking Shakespeare and working with accents! Great talk for anyone currently at, or trying to get to drama school, working actors, and even those who want to strengthen their voice. Chloe is an actor, writer and theatre maker who trained at the International School of Acting and Central School of Speech and Drama. With over 10 years of working in film, TV and theatre she is best known for playing Joanne Grantham in BBC’s Doctors and the lead role in independent film Honeycomb Lodge that won the Best Film at the Delhi International Film Festival. Chloe is currently reigning champion of the Birmingham Rep’s Monologue Slam competition with her piece “May I Take Your Order Please”, based on her time working in hospitality. In this episode we discuss Chloe’s brand new play that’s currently on tour across the UK, As SHE Likes It, a play bringing to light the sexual harassment that has/is going on in Hollywood and how it dates back back to the 1920s, not just to Harvey Weinstein. The play is based on the story of actress Patricia Douglas who was abused at an MGM party in 1937. Despite her efforts to bring her perpetrators to justice the case was thrown out and nothing came of it. I had the privilege to see and review the show with @uppercircle_theatre (review group that Chloe and I are part of) you can find it on my profile. It’s a fantastic piece packed with harsh truths that everyone needs to hear and see to stop this harassment from continuing. Rachel talks me through her love of movement, how it means different things to different practitioners, her work with animal studies and how people who say “it’s not their thing” can grow to love and embrace it. Not to mention, how integral it is to the actor’s process, finding the body of the character, finding the big expressions and condensing it down into a natural character’s characteristics. Thus helping the actor to have a full body experience of the person they’re playing whether it’s for stage or screen. We also delve back into her book looking at some more topics we didn’t cover last time, especially, one of my favourite quotes in the book, “you don’t anger anything”. 03 May 2023 | Rosie Sheehy on Romeo and Julie at the National Theatre | 01:20:58
Rosie Sheehy trained at RADA graduating in 2015, and has already done some incredible work thus far. Working for the RSC, the Sherman Theatre and most recently, the National Theatre in London. Rosie recently finished Romeo and Julie a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, written by the great Gary Owen. It played at the Sherman Theatre, the National and the Sherman again for the final weeks of the tour. Rosie takes me through the journey she's been on with the play, playing alongside Callum Scott Howells and the brilliance of Gary Owens' writing. She's also appeared on stage in Samuel D. Hunter's play The Whale where she played Ellie (played by Sadie Sink in the film with Brendan Fraser), and also on TV in HBO's masterpiece Chernobyl. A really touching episode discussing the play and the cruel and heartbreaking undercurrent of both this new adaptation and the original play, one that I enjoyed very much. Thank you Rosie, you're brilliant. 09 Oct 2021 | Adrian Schiller on Arthur Miller's The Crucible and working with Yael Farber | 01:00:50
Adrian Schiller is an actor with many credits that stand across Film, TV and Theatre to his name. He's worked on video games to Shakespeare, and has a great knowledge of the actor's process and the industry itself. It was great to talk to him about his role in the astonishing 2014 production of The Crucible, directed by Yael Farber where he played Reverend John Hale. He discusses Hale's journey across the play, how his beliefs are challenged, and how he feels responsibility to the injustice that occurs in the text. The play written as an allegory to McCarthyism demonstrates the power of false accusation while preying on public panic and delusion. It can show us how humans have the ability to be unbelievably cruel to one another, and how we must recognise history before it has any chance of repeating itself. Along with Mick, his brother, and their new flatmate, a three way power struggle suddenly ensues. It was such a great and insightful conversation to have, understanding the way Pinter liked to work, his political views, and how his interpretation of our world fed into how he wrote his plays. This episode also features myself doing a reading of a speech from Harold's play The Caretaker, hope you enjoy it! 13 Jan 2025 | Louise Beresford on appearing in Magic Goes Wrong and Performing Comedy | 01:52:35
Louise is an actress, writer, comedian and Mountview graduate who has worked across the West End and many comedy circuits across the country. She has worked extensively with Mischief Theatre company who are behind not only Magic Goes Wrong, but, The Play That Goes Wrong and Peter Pan goes Wrong among many other sketches. Some you may have seen on the Royal Variety and Comic Relief over the last few years. Louise discusses her love for comedy, how to keep it fresh for each performance and that each night is different. Every audience will react in a separate way, that is completely normal, and you shouldn’t worry if a joke lands differently than it did the previous night. Comedy is so subjective and some people will find you funnier than others. Look out for some of our darker jokes later in the episode and how comedy can occur at any moment, even at the times you LEAST expect! I first saw Louise at the Criterion Theatre for a rehearsed reading one of Sarah Milton’s newest plays “Pa(Rental)”. I encourage all actors both in or out of drama school to attend these events, not only to hear new writing but to network fellow actors in the business. These events are held by the Criterion Theatre throughout the year, keep an eye on their instagram page for more information. Full episode available in my bio!
