31 Aug 2022Ep 056: CAST - Preventing Infants & Toddlers from Drowning00:36:54

Before she became an ISR mom and then a certified instructor, Liz was an elementary school teacher with a strong background as well as passion for business and philanthropy. After her family’s ISR self-rescue experience, Liz saw a window of opportunity to continue working with kids, while owning my own business and giving back to the community. Having personally experienced what it is like to go-it-alone as both an ISR swim mom and as an ISR instructor, it quickly became clear that a team approach was needed if she were to effectively increase self-rescue access in a city as large as Chicago. This inspired her to create CAST. The mission at CAST is to increase access to self-rescue lessons and to empower families and communities to create strong water safety strategies. What Liz learned in her initial ISR experience was that each day in this country, 3 families lose a child to drowning. She also learned that physical activity does absolute wonders for my girls, and that working as a team towards a big commitment taught her whole family the value of working together and believing in each other.
Listen to this uplifting Truman Charities episode with Liz Huber about CAST

!Here is what to expect on this week’s show:
-      The moment Liz solidified her decision to create CAST when a mom named Katie asked her a question while she was studying to be an ISR instructor “How did you get to learn about these lessons before losing a child, while I am only here because my daughter is gone?"
-       The misconceptions about puddle jumpers
-       The highest drowning rates are among children 1-4 years old Connect with

15 Sep 2022Ep. 057 How A Kids' Triathalon Supports Pediatric Cancer Patients00:21:44

I interviewed the founder of JUST TRYAN IT Molly Darby.

Here is just a few things we talked about....
-The early days of Ryan's diagnosis and the moment Molly decided she wanted to create JUST TRYAN IT
-A family in the hospital that opened their eyes to the severe struggles some parents go through while their child is in treatment

Mollie Darby’s background is in interior Architecture. Mollie took 11 years off to raise 3 boys and is now back in the work world designing again!  JUST TRYAN IT is very near and dear to her heart because Ryan is her middle son. When Ryan was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009, an amazing group of women came together to support not just her family, but other families in similar situations. She LOVE’s what JUST TRYAN IT does and looks forward to what the future holds.  Mollie isn’t sure what her greatest accomplishment was as a child. She wishes that it had something like JUST TRYAN IT to compete in and to give back to. Maybe she would remember swimming, biking and running for a GREAT cause!

28 Sep 2022Ep. 058 How God Inspired A Pastor To Restore Bikes For Those In Need | Bike Ministry00:30:02

There are many ways to give back to the community and the less fortunate. Some people donate food, clothes,  money, or anything else essential to living.

All of these are very useful, but what if you gave the gift of mobility? The ability to get from point A to point B. Something we all sometimes take for granted when it is so readily available.

That’s what our guest on today’s episode is doing. The founder of Bike Ministry, pastor Robbie Pruitt and a team of volunteers have restored over 1400 bikes in the past 22 months. All funds from repairing bikes have gone toward repairing and donating bikes for homeless shelters or to children in under-resourced areas.

Bike Ministry gained traction when Robbie was approached by news outlets to share Bike Ministry with the public during the pandemic when there wasn’t a whole lot of good news being shown. Since it was a worthy cause and something that may help bring the community together in a time when there was nothing good on the news, he decided to agree to share his story to encourage and inspire people.

Well, it did the trick, because Robbie is now at capacity, fixing bikes in his home and providing bikes to anyone in need. This is a beautiful story about good people coming together for the betterment of humanity.

Tune in to hear how Robbie created Bike Ministry and how you can help!

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Where Robbie’s love for bikes came from
  • How Robbie started Bike Ministry
  • How Robbie learned to fix bikes
  • Why Robbie was hesitant about being approached by news outlets
  • How the community got involved with Bike Ministry
  • Validation from community donations
  • How often does Robbie do Bike Ministry pop-ups?
  • Important lessons Robbie has learned since starting Bike Ministry
  • Robbie’s motivation behind Bike Ministry
  • How can people help?

22 Nov 2022Ep 062 "A Son With Two Moms" Author Tony Hynes Speaks About His Experience Growing Up With Two White Moms As A Black Child, While Being In Split Custody With His Biological Family00:25:22

The adoption process is a lifelong process, it doesn’t end the day a child is adopted by a family.

This is an important point that is all too often missed. Especially in unique cases where a child is placed into split custody with their biological family and interracial and LGBTQ headed family.

Our guest on today’s episode lived this reality, and found many of the struggles he went through were not understood or acknowledged. Tony Hynes, author of The Son With Two Moms, and training specialist at The Center for Adoption Support and Education, also known as C.A.S.E, joins us to share his story of growing up with two white moms as a Black child, while being in split custody with his biological family.

Tony’s mission is to spread awareness around adoption to change people’s perceptions regarding adoption, and to shed light on the unique unseen issues that arise throughout an adoptee’s lifespan. Issues such as interracial adoption situations, as well as being adopted by LGBTQ parents and split adoption with biological families.

In this episode, you will hear Tony’s journey growing up in an interracial and queer headed household as well as the type of counselling C.A.S.E. offers and the impact they’ve had on families.

Having a home encompasses more than just the structure of the house. It represents community, growth, love, and safety. Things we often overlook when we think about home.

02 Feb 202366 Helping Women With Rare Forms of Endometrial Cancers | Laughlin Family Foundation00:19:27

“Every cancer deserves a voice, and every cancer deserves a cure.” - Laughlin Foundation

What happens when your loved one is diagnosed with a rare case of cancer, where there is little to no information about it anywhere, and doctors don’t have a protocol to treat it.?

Our guest on today’s episode lived this truth when her mother was diagnosed with a rare form of endometrial cancer. After searching for answers, Courtney Laughlin and her family decided to take matters into their own hands and create awareness around this rare cancer, and others like it, by starting the Laughlin Foundation to raise funds for research.

This close knit family is the epitome of strength and resilience, where they took a dire situation and turned it around to make a difference, and have some fun while they’re at it.

Their mission isn’t only to raise funds for research, it’s also to educate more people on these rare types of cancers and to get people talking openly about “below the belt” subjects, to reduce the stigma or embarrassment attached to it.

In today’s episode, you will hear how the Laughlin Foundation is partnering with doctors and schools to make sure that rare cancers are not being pushed aside so protocols and treatments are more readily available and understood.

This family is working hard to ensure this message gets out, so tune in to hear their inspiring story and learn more about their charity!

15 Feb 202367 Feeding Kids In Need One Backpack At A Time | KIND00:17:44

Did you know that one third of children in schools in Montgomery County are on the free or reduced lunch program? This number is shocking to see anywhere, but more so when referring to a county that is seemingly more affluent. This just goes to show that no one is immune to food insecurity, regardless of what a situation may appear as.

This is why our guest on today’s episode founded KIND to ensure that children facing food insecurity have meals when they go home. Jeremy Lichtenstein has teamed up with his community to purchase, pack, and distribute meals by sending kids home on Friday with a backpack full of meals so they don’t go hungry over the weekend.

KIND’s operation is smooth and efficient, allowing for the most bags to be packed in the shortest amount of time, 115,000 food items in 30 minutes to be exact, and every dollar raised goes directly toward purchasing food for these children.

Tune in to hear how this organization has made a huge difference in the Montgomery County area and how they want to continue their efforts to provide consistent aid for underprivileged schools and children.

30 Aug 2023Why Are The Poverty Numbers Increasing? We Get To The Root Cause | The Shared Humanity Project Ep.8100:37:14

For 60 years, the United States has been fighting poverty but the number of people in poverty has only increased. Why is this, and what can we do to finally make an impact?

Co-founder of The Shared Humanity Project, Mark Bergel, is joining host Jamie Truman on this episode to answer these questions and more. He says that we’ve been addressing the poverty crisis all wrong, addressing the symptoms instead of the cause, exploiting those in poverty, and spending money on programs with no evidence that they’ll be effective.

Poverty has an impact on crime, education and more issues that affect our communities. In fact, 97% of people born into poverty in East Baltimore never get out of it, and poverty plays a role in three deaths per day.

In this episode, Mark shares the “truths of poverty” and The Shared Humanity Project’s National Plan to End Poverty. You’ll also learn how The Shared Humanity Project is amplifying the voices of those in poverty, becoming a resource of information, and aiming to make a difference in every local market.

Tune in to find out how we as a society can merge compassion with action to alleviate poverty, and how to get involved with The Shared Humanity Project!

22 Sep 2023Making Fitness Accessible For All: Empowering People With Disabilities Through Physical Activity | The Spirit Club Foundation Ep 8300:28:50

Fitness is a crucial element to the health of every human being, but many of us need a push to get active, relying on a gym, fitness class or online videos to guide us in our fitness journey. However, these kinds of exercise programs aren’t designed for those with disabilities, and they’re often left feeling out of place and discouraged. People with disabilities also have higher rates of conditions like diabetes and obesity, so it’s especially important for them to have access to physical activity.

Aiming to close the gaps people with disabilities experience and provide greater access to fitness is The Spirit Club Foundation. Its founder, Jared Ciner, and Executive Director, Kim Schofield, are joining host Jamie Truman in this episode to share what they’re doing to fulfill the organization’s mission. This includes offering funds for individuals to attend exercise programs, providing fitness classes and group exercise programs, and more.

Jared and Kim’s personal experiences with the program highlights the amazing impact the organization has on the lives of people with disabilities and their families. Not only does physical activity reduce the risk of disease, improves immunity, mental health and LOTS MORE, but they’ve seen firsthand the positive effects of team-based training and socialization.

To learn more about the benefits of the organization, be sure to register for their upcoming Fitness Festival on October 1st at the Ivy Mount School in Potomac, MD. The festival runs from 1 PM to 4 PM and will feature fun demo classes, a silent auction, award ceremony and more.

The Spirit Club Foundation is on a mission to help every person who reaches out for a scholarship, so tune in to find out how you can help them!

11 Oct 2023Creating A Space For Individuals with Disabilities to Thrive | Main Street Ep. 8400:37:43

The Truman Charities Annual Halloween Party is back! On October 28th from 6 to 10 PM, Truman Charities is hosting their spectacular event to support Main Street, an organization that’s changing the lives of people with disabilities and inspiring change within the community and beyond.

After her son reached adulthood and lost access to many programs offered to people with disabilities, Main Street founder Jillian Copeland was troubled by the lack of opportunities available to him and decided to take action. Main Street was created to provide affordable and accessible housing with a community of support, thus empowering those with disabilities by allowing them to pave their own way to independence.

Main Street’s ADA-compliant apartment complex is one of the first of its kind, featuring their Soulfull Cafe, a fitness center, art gallery, classrooms and more. And the community is not just available to Main Street residents — anyone who wants to be part of the community can become a Main Street member and attend their weekly events or join virtual classes to learn a new skill, explore their artistic side, or just make friends.

Their approach to inclusion and accessibility has made a huge impact on their community, and Main Street’s model is now being adapted around the country. However, there’s so much more the organization is trying to accomplish.

Tune in now to find out how you can support Main Street’s mission!

Be sure to join host Jamie Truman and Jillian Copeland this October 28th at Tommy Joe’s in Bethesda, MD for the Truman Charities Halloween Bash! They’ll be great food and amazing auction items you don’t want to miss. Register for the event at https://www.trumancharities.com/.
