07 Apr 2024 | 116. Psychedelics, Coaching, and International Moves: A Therapist's Daring Adventure! | with Dr. Elizabeth Shuler | 00:36:27
Dr. Liz Shuler's journey as a traveling therapist began when her husband received a job offer overseas, leading them to live in countries like Jordan and China before settling in Belgium for his studies. Liz's path in mental health counseling, international school counseling, and eventually opening her own practice in Belgium illustrates the flexibility and adaptability required in her field. Her experience showcases the importance of navigating legal and regulatory landscapes in different countries, highlighting how laws vary significantly from one place to another and the necessity for therapists to adapt to these differences while maintaining their practice.
In Belgium, Liz encountered a complex bureaucratic system that challenged her professional credentials and required her to navigate through extensive paperwork to continue her practice legally. Her determination led her to find a loophole that allowed her to practice as a psychotherapist due to her experience before 2016. Liz's story is not just about the challenges of international practice but also about the opportunities it presents, such as her involvement in psychedelic integration coaching and her use of platforms like Insight Timer to reach a broader audience. This tale is a testament to the innovative approaches therapists can take to adapt their practices to new environments while exploring unique specializations.

On this episode of The Traveling Therapist podcast, I interview Jake Ernst, a therapist specializing in the impact of technology on well-being, who discusses the concerning effects of screen addiction and strategies to break the dopamine addiction associated with excessive device usage. Jake emphasizes the need to replace shame with compassion when addressing screen dependency, as these apps are intentionally designed to be addictive. He offers practical tips, such as using grayscale mode on smartphones to reduce the attractiveness of apps and implementing dopamine detoxes to reset the relationship with screens.
Throughout our discussion, Jake stresses the importance of self-awareness and setting boundaries to avoid passive and antisocial screen usage. He encourages users to consider active and prosocial interactions online, like engaging with others and sharing meaningful content. Jake advocates for tech-free days to restore balance and be more present in real-life experiences. The key takeaway is to approach screen usage with compassion and recognize that breaking the dopamine addiction requires understanding the addictive design of technology and implementing mindful practices to promote healthier digital habits. We related this to the traveling therapist lifestyle and how to break away from technology especially when we are exploring the world as traveling therapists.

11 Dec 2022 | 50. It's All About The Connections That Help Your Ideas Come To Completion | 00:34:53
We moved to Ormond Beach, FL for a month. We had barely settled in when Hurricane Nicole came along, now we have moved on to Cape Canaveral. We are one block from the beach and we can see the launch pad at Kennedy space center from the beach! It's very cool. Ken's daughter is coming to visit this weekend and we plan to go to the space center on Saturday.
This month was a month of connecting with friends and family and launching big ideas.
I flew into Greensboro for a weekend to see my nephews. In Ormand Beach, I was able to reunite with an old college roommate who lives near where we are staying. Last week I traveled to Scottsdale, AZ and spent 5 days with my trusted business besties for some much-needed R&R. We shared plans, strategies, and goals as we talked late into the night over prosecco and snacks. Even though we were serious about achieving our goals, there were still plenty of laughs along the way.
Last week I took a huge leap and re-launched my Flagship membership 'Bill like a Boss.' I finally took the advice of others and combined my membership and my DIY Billing course into one. I just about doubled my membership in two weeks!
On my trip to Scottsdale, I solidified my vision for 2023.
🐝 The Traveling Therapist membership! Eeek! So excited about this. 🐝 Plan a Traveling Therapist live event! Viking Cruise? 🐝 Continue to grow Bill Like a Boss and help at least 1000 therapists build their insurance-based practices in 2023. 🐝 The Traveling Therapist will Sponsor Thriving Therapist Institute events and attend live to continue to Thrive in my business and network with other Thriving/traveling Therapists. 🐝 Support my fellow multi-passionate entrepreneurial friends in their businesses to help us all grow and expand beyond our wildest dreams

This is part 2 of Shelly Blancq’s series on Traveling Hacking and Budget Travel. Shelly discusses her experiences and strategies around credit card hacking, particularly with a focus on travel rewards. She starts with discussing how she used a Capital One card due to its straightforward points system and low barrier of entry. The Venture X card, which comes with an annual fee of $95, offers up to 60,000 to 75,000 points upon spending $3,000 in three months. These points can be used to offset travel-related purchases at a value of 1 cent per point. The speaker then transitioned to using Amex and Chase credit cards, as they offered better transfer partners, enabling more lucrative rewards. Transferring points to specific loyalty programs could result in significantly better value, she exemplified this with a flight from JFK to Chicago costing 5,000 Chase points instead of $250.

15 Oct 2023 | 91. Mind-Blowing Therapy: Innovative Clinician Combines Travel with Psychedelics | featuring Michal Cohen | 00:44:18
This week's episode features Michal Cohen, a psychedelic therapist who helps clients through therapeutic cannabis ceremonies and ketamine therapy. Michal explains how she got into this unique work through trainings in alternative modalities like ganja yoga. She sees immense value in psychedelics for mental health based on her own healing journey.
As a traveling therapist, Mihael has figured out how to guide clients before and after ketamine experiences even when she's abroad long-term. She shares tips for therapist-travelers like vetting accommodations for strong WiFi, researching destinations thoroughly, and staying flexible when plans change. Mihael aims to model a sense of adventure in navigating the inevitability of travel mishaps. She provides an inspiring example of how therapists can blend travel and online work successfully.
Michal grew up in a family that loved to travel! These early travel experiences shaped her to decide to pursue college in CA, even though she grew up in NJ. During college, she traveled to Aix-en-Provence for a semester abroad. Her experience as a student in France was so rewarding, she moved to Italy after graduating and lived there for a year teaching English. She then joined the Peace Corps and went on to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in both Madagascar and St. Lucia. It was her experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer that led her to pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work at Columbia University. 12 years ago, Michal decided to make her home in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she offers online therapy and in-person psychedelic cannabis journeys.
Michal loves working as an online therapist because it has allowed her to resume travel as a way of life. This past year, she spent 5 weeks in Mexico and she is returning there for another month in October.
Her favorite travel quote is from the movie The Sheltering Sky: "We're not tourists. We're travelers... Oh. What's the difference?... A tourist is someone who thinks about going home the moment they arrive, Whereas a traveler might not come back at all.

08 Sep 2024 | 134. The One Upgrade that Transformed My Therapy Business Overnight with Lindsay Haverslew | 00:29:17
You know that feeling when you stumble across a hidden gem during your travels? That burst of excitement because you've found something truly special? That’s exactly how I felt after my chat with Lindsey Haverslu. Her journey from a traditional therapist to a globetrotting, multi-passionate entrepreneur is nothing short of inspiring. Picture this: Starting in Thailand during a global pandemic, Lindsey turned her dream into reality against all odds. So many of you email me, saying you want to start your traveling therapist journey now—not stuck in the States, but out there in the world. Lindsey did just that, and it’s a game-changer. What struck me was her fearless leap, especially when her business wasn’t yet enough to sustain her. She took a calculated risk, leaned into social media, and boom! She built a thriving practice with thousands of followers on Instagram and even brought on associates. Imagine the freedom that kind of success gives you. Lindsey also created Solaceseekers Collective, a supportive space for Betrayed Partners. Her passion, mixed with travel narratives, makes her not just a therapist, but a beacon of hope and transformation for her clients. It’s proof that pursuing your passion can serve others in profound ways. Whether you’re grappling with the complexities of licensing or craving other income streams for more travel freedom, Lindsey’s story is your roadmap. She’s balancing private practice, a booming social media presence, and, soon enough, hosting a retreat in Guatemala. The biggest takeaway? Don’t be afraid to showcase your unique lifestyle within your practice. Authenticity draws the right clients to you. Use your travels not just for personal growth but as an extension of the healing work you do with your clients.

In this episode, I had an amazing conversation with my guest, Nicole Holst, who shared her thoughts on personal growth, self-trust, and the unique challenges faced by aspiring traveling therapists or anyone attempting to achieve a new lifestyle. Nicole stressed the importance of trusting oneself and expressed the joy she feels when she is able to assist others in making life-changing decisions. We discussed the many emails I receive from aspiring traveling therapists who feel stuck and yearn for the lifestyle that, I, and other nomadic therapists are living. Nicole acknowledged the obstacles that traveling therapists and entrepreneurs in general face, but she encourages us to heed our inner calling and overcome the obstacles.Nicole also emphasized the importance of positive thinking and the law of attraction, stating that what one focuses on becomes their reality. She mentioned the concept of quantum entanglement, suggesting that when energies match, they are drawn together, which is why certain people find their way to her content and Traveling Therapists serendipitously find this podcast.Nicole believes that those who desire a nomadic lifestyle are drawn to it for a reason and encourages you to follow your instincts. She acknowledges that the initial stages of such a lifestyle change can be challenging, but she assured my listeners that the eventual expansion of their life experience makes the effort worthwhile. This conversation was a great reminder of the power of positive thinking and the potential we all have to shape our own realities.Key points:

14 Jan 2024 | 104. The Quebec Conundrum: The Challenge of Getting Licensed In Two Countries with Ally Rosenberg | 00:38:28
In this episode of The Traveling Therapist Podcast, Kym interviews Ally Rosenberg, a therapist specializing in women's mental health, who is exploring the possibility of living a traveling therapist lifestyle in Quebec. Ally's interest in this lifestyle stems from her partner's career flexibility and citizenship in Canada. Which allows them to consider living in different locations. She discusses her efforts to navigate the complexities of virtual therapy practice across borders, including understanding the specific licensure requirements in different regions.
Ally has been researching the legalities of cross-border virtual practice and has utilized resources like Person-Centered Tech trainings on this topic. She explains that state licensing boards regulate where the therapist can practice, usually requiring the therapist to be licensed in the state where the client is located. In Quebec, where Ally is considering practicing, the psychological order mandates licensure for outpatient work. She talks about the challenges she faces as she explores the possibility of working with a master's degree in Quebec.
One of the critical considerations for traveling therapists, as Ally notes, is managing high-acuity clients while abroad. She balances her work between community services and private clients to mitigate risks and gain experience. Ally also emphasizes the importance of having liability insurance coverage for cross-border practice, advising direct contact with insurers to understand international coverage specifics.
As for her future plans, Ally remains open to new connections and sharing insights about the process of practicing in Quebec. Her decision between France and Quebec will depend on her partner's job situation, which is expected to be finalized in June. She encourages listeners to reach out to her to discuss these topics further.

24 Apr 2022 | 17. With A Little Planning, Maintaining Healthy Eating And Your Regular Routine Is Possible While Traveling! with Jillian Lama | 00:31:32
I’m so excited to share this episode with Jillian Lama. Jillian is a Master Certified Life & Weight Loss Coach who travels quite a bit. She has specialized knowledge in eating well for our body's needs and maintaining a healthy regime even when you are traveling. Additionally, she is an expert in helping people who have special diets, food allergies and other diary restrictions to navigate while traveling.
“I help busy people eat healthy without needing willpower or feeling deprived, so that they can lose weight (and easily maintain it) eating the foods they love.
The only problem is, you’re at war with food after years of dieting, thinking you're not thin enough, pretty enough or good enough.
To make it worse, you haven’t a flaming clue what to eat to lose weight anymore, why you’re binging on chocolate, ice cream and peanut butter, and feel ALL the shame when you don't have the willpower to stick with your 1200 calorie diet.
Body You Crave teaches you to break free from diet-jail, so that you have freedom to eat dessert or a piece of bread (gasp!), without stressing over “falling off the wagon” or calculating how far you'll need to run tomorrow to “burn it off.”
It’s time to end emotional eating, conquer your cravings, and lose excess weight for Life.
When you're ready to eliminate stress, create simple habits that work, and finally wear that dress that's been stuffed in the back of your closet for years...
I'll show you how”

19 Jun 2022 | 25. Month 4 as a Digital Nomad - Entrepreneurship & Side Hustles - The Ups and Downs | 00:34:12
This episode discusses my journey over the last month as a digital nomad, entrepreneur, and creator of side hustles. I discuss the pros and cons of the digital nomad lifestyle, how to make money online, and the challenges I've faced along the way. As you may already know, I'm a big fan of having a side hustle to supplement my income and over the years I've developed 8 of them! In this episode, I discuss my journey as a digital nomad, entrepreneur, and creator. The Traveling Therapist was a sponsor for two therapist summits since my last digital nomad update! I learned a lot as an entrepreneur over the last month. The summits were really meaningful and allowed me to connect, in person, with friends who I've only known through Facebook. It was a real whirlwind, but really awesome to get to connect with friends and even some members of my Bill Like A Boss community for the first time. During this time, I had to fire an employee and this caused a bit of a setback for my launch of the Experts’ Guide To Becoming a Traveling Therapist. No worries! I’m resilient and figured out how to launch the course anyway and found an excellent replacement to help me with all of the launch tech I can't figure out myself. I’m super excited about the course and the Traveling Therapist Extravaganza which starts Monday the 20th of June, 2022 in the Traveling Therapist Facebook group. I’ve been working like crazy to get everything ready and am confident that it will be an excellent event! 26 Jun 2022 | 26. Typical Therapist to Traveling Therapist: Ruthie's Journey To Portugal; Tips, Tricks, and Recommendations! | 00:44:08
Join us for this episode with Ruthie Kalai. Ruthie recently traveled to Portugal for a month where she continued to see clients and the country as part of a unique digital nomad travel club. In this episode, Ruthie shares her tips, tricks and experience with being A Traveling Therapist.
She has been a therapist for over 20 years but was always stuck working in schools. It wasn't until she started her remote private practice, that she realized she could travel AND work at the same time. The idea came to her after looking for a way to visit her mom every 6 weeks in Florida to help take care of her during her cognitive decline. That's when she was introduced to teletherapy and soon opened my own private teletherapy practice.
Several years later, she is loving being able to combine her love for travel with her love for her career. She typically travel solo but never really alone because she meet so many people along the way. Her favorite solo trip was in 2016 when she flew off to Southeast Asia for a 6-month adventure. She call it her "Eat, Pray, Love" experience because it was truly that. She recently was able to spend a month in Portugal while seeing clients full-time. It was her first experiment to see if she could work and travel simultaneously and she's thrilled to say it was a total success. It's shown her that she can continue to travel and work at the same time. Her only struggle is navigating time zones when scheduling sessions. That and the occasional wonky Wi-Fi. Up next on her travel itinerary is Boulder, Israel, Venice, and Prague. But she is the kind of person who will most likely say yes if someone invites her to join them so this list might expand as the weeks go by.
She's really excited to share her experiences with you and hopefully show you that traveling therapists do exist! Check out her website, www.ruthiekalai.com.

We have been to so many places in the last month!! The month started with a trip through Virginia to see our families. We went to Lynchburg, Williamsburg, Chesapeake and Richmond then on to West Virginia for a few weeks. We really are starting to feel the cost of these airbnbs. Yikes. Monthly rentals are starting to seem more appealing, price wise. We got to try skiing on artificial turf and I got to visit Niagra Falls for the first time! 💕

28 Feb 2022 | 09. I Moved To Mexico! with Cassie Coleman-Heppler | 00:43:07
Cassie shares her journey from being a traditional therapist to a traveling online therapist way before it was a norm in the field. In this episode, Cassie discusses the path she traveled to end up living in Mexico! If you are thinking of moving to Mexico permanently, this is the episode for you!
I have been a therapist for 22 years and worked with a diverse population and locations. From residential care to community mental health, universities and working for the British Government as a specialist social worker. It was that move from 2005-2008 in England that really set the seed for me to become a traveling therapist. I started a private practice on the side and started doing virtual therapy/platforms in 2012, while my colleagues just scratched their heads in confusion, assured in their belief that only in-person therapy works. I loved it. For the next few years, I planned the next phase of my life where we bought and renovated a home in the capital of the Yucatan in Mexico and have been using that as a home base while I am still able to travel, work and connect to family and friends in a way I never could historically.
“So when we chose Mexico, it looked like my husband had guidelines, like no natural disasters, like he didn't want to live on the Pacific side, because it was like, you know, and so there were those kinds of things to consider. And MERIT has been named one of the safest cities in the world. It's number two safest and all of the Americas behind Quebec.”

10 Jul 2022 | 28. All things Traveling Therapist Florida Style with Chelsea Sandburg | 00:45:12
For today’s episode, we have Chelsea Sanburg who is a licensed mental health counselor. Together with her husband, they have accomplished what they set out to do after years of consciously creating a life that allows for a healthy work/life balance. Even though getting there wasn't always simple, it was worthwhile and along the way, they discovered that travel is a mindset and that it can be purposefully created wherever you are. And with that, today, she will share her journey and her traveling lifestyle.
Traveling and work are two of Chelsea’s core values. She knew that she had to be creative and intentional in building a life that would include both, so she set out to do just that. She and her husband have spent years being intentional in the careers they’ve accepted and where they've lived in order to maximize travel experiences. They moved from Iowa to Florida (with some time in North Carolina and South Dakota in between) and currently spend every weekend traveling. Right now, they spend the majority of their time exploring the state of Florida because there are endless experiences there (and because they never tire of beaches!) but as traveling continues to get easier with covid, they’ve started expanding their travels again.
“Even if you can afford to travel, but you have a crappy mindset, you're gonna shut down when things go wrong, and things will go wrong, they will go wrong every time.”

Christina shares her transformative journey on this ancient pilgrimage, highlighting the personal and spiritual growth she encountered along the way. Starting in 2015, she embarked on the Camino Frances route, a 500-mile trek from France to Spain, driven by both a quest for personal discovery and a break from her discontentment in hospital social work.
During her pilgrimage, Christina discovered her passion for travel writing and focused on the unique challenges of traveling with celiac disease. This led to the creation of her publication "BuenQamino," inspired by the common greeting among pilgrims. Christina's Camino experience was not just a physical journey but also a journey of self-discovery and reevaluation, leading her to pivot her professional life towards a path that truly resonated with her.

She has visited over 35 different countries and documented most of it on social media. However, it was in completing the Camino de Santiago (500-mile pilgrimage across Spain) at the end of 2015, where she realized her strong affinity with writing. She decided to start BuenQamino, an Award-Winning, gluten-free and health-conscious lifestyle, and travel publication.

17 Jul 2022 | 29. How I Incorporate Travel Into My Thriving Entrepreneurial Lifestyle with Patrick Casale | 00:28:25
I met with Patrick Casale who discusses his journey from community mental health to thriving entrepreneur. He talks about how he made the transition, what he's been up to since, and some of the challenges he's faced along the way.
It was really interesting to hear about Patrick's journey and get some insights into the entrepreneurial mindset. He's definitely someone who is thinking outside the box and taking some risks - something that I admire.
If you're thinking about making a similar transition, or are just curious to hear about entrepreneurship, then this episode is for you!
“I’ve worked in the helping profession since 2008, and, like many therapists, I started my career in a community mental health job where instead of feeling fulfilled, I felt overworked, burnt out, taken for granted, and underappreciated.
I knew I wanted out but feared the uncertainty of private practice, because, at the time, I had no fucking clue how to start a business. After all, most people who go into the helping profession don’t have a lot of business training, if any at all.
After a lot of work, some struggles, and trial-and-error, I successfully launched my private practice. Then a couple of years after that, I launched a thriving group practice.
I am truly passionate about empowering therapists to take the steps they need to create more successful lives and careers while working flexible hours, taking more vacations, and using their precious clinical skills effectively.
When it comes to being a successful private practice and small business owner, I’ve already been there and done that, so now I help other therapists all over the United States save time, skip the guesswork, and start seeing clients sooner with their own private practices.”

02 Oct 2022 | 40. Month 8 as a Digital Nomad, 3 States, and 1 incredible journey through Northeastern United States | 00:37:36
We've been on the road for eight months now, and we've seen some amazing sights! We just finished up a trip to Niagra Falls, and it was incredible. The power and beauty of those falls are truly awe-inspiring.
But that wasn't our only stop on this trip. We also visited Vermont and Maine, both of which were beautiful in their own ways. And now we're in the Poconos, which is definitely one of the most relaxing places we've been to yet.
Of course, along the way we've learned a lot about Airbnb. (In case you didn't know, they can be quite tricky!) We almost ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere Vermont, but thankfully we made it to the next town in time. And we rented electric bikes for the first time while in Maine...which was WAY better than using regular bikes! Haha.
I'm continuing my entrepreneurial journey and have two major projects right now. One is hosting a webinar called "Don't Panic: How to survive a rigorous insurance audit" with Gabrielle Juliano-Villani. She's an expert on the topic and I know her webinar will be packed with valuable information.
The second project is the "Nitty Gritty of Multi-state Private Practice Extension" course with Dr. Lisa Lovelace. Here's a free webinar we created around this topic if you're interested in this topic. Lisa is an amazing speaker and I know this webinar will be packed with useful information for private practice owners who are looking to expand their business into multiple states.
Both of these projects are really exciting and I can't wait to share them with you!!
I hope you enjoy this episode!
