29 Sep 2014Episode 23: Guy Macpherson, PhD. The Trauma Therapist Live!: The Power of Presence.00:12:28
TheTrauma Therapist Live! podcasts are shorter segments in which I reflect on the themes and topics coming up on the podcast and discuss the nuts and bolts of how these themes pertain to the trauma therapist, what we can learn from them, and how we can apply them in the work we do.
Bio
My name is Guy Macpherson. I am a husband, father, brother, and a psychologist. I specialize in the treatment of trauma and early psychosis. My passion is helping trauma therapists thrive.
I do this by helping trauma clinicians engage more effectively and deeply with their clients by:
Sharing trauma information and materials
Building community
The Trauma Therapist Podcast
Coaching (http://www.westcoasttraumaproject.com/trauma-therapy-coaching--consultation) therapists to (re)discover their own why for this work
For the last six years I have dedicated myself to the study of trauma psychology, trauma therapy, post-traumatic growth, and most recently, the intersection of trauma and psychosis, specifically the signs of early psychosis.
Inspiration
My inspiration comes from working with the courageous individuals determined to learn and find meaning from the trials they have endured.
My inspiration comes from personal experience as well: My brother is a Navy SEAL veteran who suffered with PTSD.
Why
A few years after my brother’s return from Iraq, and inspired by his accomplishments, I went on a two-week survival course with Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS) in the middle of Utah. It was the first time I'd ever done anything like this and it required all the courage I had. It was the middle of summer, we were hiking all day, without backpacks and just the clothes we could wear. We had water, but no food for the first four days. On the third day one of our members became ill and wasn't able to walk. Myself and another member carried this young man for the next two days. We helped him up ridges, through canyons, and tried to encourage him with every step.
I share this story because it was at that moment that I knew what I wanted to do with my life:
I want to help individuals who are in dire situations discover their strength and thrive.
My goal with the West Coast Trauma Project is to help other trauma therapists thrive--through providing actionable information, community building, inspiration and support.

24 Apr 2019Episode 356: Early Psychosis. The Course is Coming. Guy Macpherson00:09:36
As many of you know, I've been working on The Trauma Therapist Project full-time now for about one year.

Prior to that, my position was as a license-eligible clinician, working under a licensed therapist, at a clinic here in Northern California for five years.

Our role was to assess and treat young individuals between the ages of 12 and 25 who were showing early signs of psychosis.

I absolutely loved the job and learned an amazing amount.

I’ve wanted to create a workshop around this topic for a long time, and so, here it is.

In this episode, I introduce this topic and share a bit about the course.

And yes, I’m very excited!

What is psychosis?

And what is early psychosis?

Two great questions, and ones which you have to answer if you're a therapist, and could certainly help if you're a teacher.

The word psychosis is not an actual diagnosis, but rather a collection of symptoms which indicate that an individual can not distinguish between what is real and what is not.

Early psychosis then describes those symptoms which can sometimes precede full or complete psychosis.

Such symptoms could include visual or auditory hallucinations (among others), but yet the individual still continues to maintain their hold on reality. In other words, someone might experience these symptoms but they know that those symptoms are not real.

Assessing for these symptoms, whether you're a therapist or teacher, and whether you work with children or adults, is a crucial skill.

This is what I spent 5 years of my life doing, and I loved it.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/exclusive-content

03 Oct 2022Episode 660: Life Centered Therapy with Andy Hahn, PsyD00:42:27
Andrew Hahn, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and the developer of the Life Centered Therapy Training program and co-author, along with Joan Beckett, of the book, The One-Hour Miracle.
While Dr. Hahn’s strong foundation and significant experience in traditional psychology has served his clients well, he has been untiring in his effort to better understand what is going on for people so that he could better help them live more contented and healthier lives. This calling for greater understanding, as well as certain experiences which he could not fully comprehend within the confines of traditional Western paradigms, led him on a search for answers that opened him to the worlds of Buddhist and Eastern Psychology, as well as Mystery Trainings; and Depth, Archetypal and Spiritual Psychology.
He received his A.B. Magna Cum Laude in Social Studies/Psychology from Harvard University and his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Hahnemann University. He is certified by Helen Palmer to teach the Enneagram and has also been a faculty member in the graduate Counseling Programs at Lesley University and Northeastern University.
During this period, Thich Nhat Hanh, Brugh Joy, Dick Olney, Helen Palmer, Barbara Hastings, and Claudio Naranjo were particularly influential and powerful teachers for him.
As that period was ending, he started working with Judith Swack, the developer of Healing from the Body Level Up. Working with her opened him to the worlds of Kinesiology, current research on Violence and Loss Traumas, and Energy Psychology. Dr. Swack and Dr. Hahn collaborated for several years marrying their two worlds, and this collaboration formed the foundation of the work that is now known as Life Centered Therapy.
In 1997, after several years of witnessing the power of the work, Dr. Hahn developed the Life Centered Therapy Training program for those who want to facilitate and/or teach this process. Today, Dr. Hahn has a private practice in Waltham, MA; speaks, teaches and leads trainings and healing groups internationally; and continues his effort to better understand what is going on for people so that he can better help them live more contented and healthier lives.

Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute (SETI)

Trauma may be a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be a life sentence.

Somatic Experiencing is a psychobiological method of addressing clients’ physical and emotional trauma conditions and helps to give voice to their experiences without a need for them to retell the story. For more information please visit: https://traumahealing.org/kser

In 2010, a former Marine approached Mary seeking assistance in acquiring a service dog to help him overcome anxiety disorders caused by combat hyper-vigilance. The multi-year waiting lists for trained dogs from existing organizations were just one more source of frustration for that returning vet.

Mary knew that she could leverage her extensive dog-training experience to train that vet to train his own service dog. She also realized there are thousands of dogs waiting for loving homes and that many of them have the right temperament for service work. Those factors combined to form a strategy that would dramatically reduce the waiting time.

The approach turned out to do so much more: It gave the vet a sense of mission and purpose, and as the training proceeded, it provided a sense of accomplishment and renewed confidence as well. Thus was born the Operation Freedom Paws (OFP) program, and for Mary, the alignment of her skillset, her capacity as a gifted leader and her life purpose.

Dr. Omar Minwalla is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Sexologist and the Director of The Institute for Sexual Health in Beverly Hills, California.
Dr. Minwalla is the founder of the Sex Addiction-Induced Trauma Model, which recognizes the traumatic impacts on others of sexual acting out disorders.
Since 2006, Dr. Minwalla has articulated the alarming lack of recognition and treatment of trauma among partners and spouses of sex addicts. He has challenged the “traditional sex addiction model” as patriarchal, narcissistic in scope, a form of victim-blaming, and in desperate need of revision. The Institute for Sexual Health remains one of the only treatment facilities that utilizes a sex addiction-induced trauma model to treat those impacted and victimized by sexual acting out disorders.

05 May 2022Episode 608: How The Unconscious Heals Trauma with Dr. Melanie Salmon00:32:26
Melanie Salmon is a medical doctor, gestalt psychotherapist, trauma specialist and teacher, and she’s committed her life to the exploration and practice of healing.
During her 40-years in medicine, Melanie became increasingly frustrated with the limited ability for pharmaceutical drugs to treat the cause of health issues including psycho-emotional conditions in her patients. To Melanie, it became clear that these problems were related to a dysfunctional nervous system caused by unresolved and unhealed trauma. This understanding led her to leave medicine to seek out a better way.
In 2008 she found it. Combining the best from many modalities including Gestalt psychotherapy, neuroscience, and epigenetics – drawing inspiration from both the traditional and modern – Dr Salmon created Quantum Energy Coaching (QEC), revolutionizing the way we approach healing. A simple, yet profoundly effective method that works with the subconscious mind, QEC is a clinically usable tool that heals the effects of past trauma and changes limiting beliefs rapidly and safely.

Casey is a licensed Psychotherapist, Consciousness Coach and Healer with over ten years of experience who utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to cultivate a deep connection with her client’s sacred inner wisdom so they too can live their most meaningful life.

Casey’s process includes offering presence, attunement, release, restructuring, activation and fortification.

A lot of what I do, she says, is like the tuning of a fine piano. She listens in order to feel the sound waves, energy and patterns and structure in a person with her hyper-sensory awareness and the ability to know which keys are out of tune; and therefore, needing to be restored and rebalanced.

26 Feb 2015Episode 64: Trauma Therapist Live!: Stabilization & Opportunity00:18:10
The Trauma Therapist Live! podcasts are shorter segments in which I reflect on the themes and topics coming up on the podcast and discuss the nuts and bolts of how these themes pertain to the trauma therapist, what we can learn from them, and how we can apply them in the work we do.
In this episode I talk about the Stabilization phase of the 3-Part Trauma Treatment Model. Specifically I talk about the many opportunities within this phase for us as clinicians to connect and communicate with our clients, as well as to build rapport with and provide psychoeducation to our clients. How do we as new trauma therapists keep it all together while maintaining composure, presence and empathy?

I’ve been following Sebastian Junger’s work for some time now. It’s been his war documentaries, however, such as Restrepo (http://www.sebastianjunger.com/films-1/) and Korengal (http://www.sebastianjunger.com/films-1/), that have pulled me in and had an impact on me and the work I now do.

When I saw that he had a new book coming out which looked at our need for community and connection, as seen through the eyes of combat veterans, I knew I wanted to invite him on the podcast. I contacted him on Facebook. A little while later, he responded. Here we are!

29 Nov 2021Episode 564: We've forgotten that we live in our bodies with Jan Winhall, MSW00:34:56
My guest today, Jan Winhall of Focusing on Borden, began her career as social worker and psychotherapist 40 years ago.

[CW for text below: mention of self-harming behaviors]

She began listening with non-pathologizing ears and heard shocking stories of sexual torture, and responses that confused her. Women were cutting themselves, bingeing and purging huge quantities of food, and abusing drugs and alcohol.

As she continued to listen she learned that somehow these self-harming behaviors were “helping” individuals to escape intolerable emotional states. They were shifting their mood from flooding anxiety to numbing deadness, or vice versa.

Because these behaviors were so helpful they were compulsively repeated and often became addictions. They were shifting their mood from flooding anxiety to numbing deadness, or vice versa.

Jan’s book Treating Trauma and Addiction with The Felt Sense Polyvagal Model: A Bottom Up Approach, has integrated the Polyvagal lens Theory to create a more sophisticated way of understanding emotional regulation, where addictive behavior is an embodied response to emotional dysregulation.

26 Oct 2020Episode 486: Robert Greene. A Healing Warrior00:37:43
Robert is a US Navy Veteran (Hospital Corpsman) who was diagnosed with PTSD in Jan 2016. After a long battle with his internal demons, he decided to immerse himself in ancient practices as a means to master his mind.

During his time on active duty after deployment, Robert attempted suicide 2 times and was placed on anti-depressants and sleeping medications. After battling an addiction to alcohol and sleeping pills when as he was coming off active duty, the thought that he had a serious problem didn't really cross his mind. At that point, Robert fell into the toxic pattern of, what he calls the "bullet proof" facade, most military men wear and so did not want to admit to himself or anyone else that he had a problem.

As long as he kept things together on the outside and his career life was going good, that's all that mattered. Robert kept this whole song and dance up for 8 years. In the midst of a drug addiction, toxic relationships and his career life falling apart, he attempted suicide again in 2015, two years after he lost his father to suicide in 2013.

I did what most Veterans do to seek help, I went to the local VA and got an eval. The social worker told me that I was a danger to myself and others and I was later told that I have a sever case of PTSD so I need help right away. I asked for that help but I was told that I would need to wait about 5 months for an appointment with the mental health specialist. As a vet that attempted suicide weeks earlier, this was not the way forward.

I read a study about the VA giving a series of yoga classes to 120 Veterans with PTSD at the University of Indiana. The results were amazing, reduced anxiety, reduced stress, ability to control mood swings, ability to get better sleep, form healthy relationships and overall better state mind/quality of life.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing Trauma may be a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be a life sentence. Somatic Experiencing is a psychobiological method of addressing clients’ physical and emotional trauma conditions, and helps to give voice to their experiences without a need for them to retell the story.

SE was founded by Dr. Peter Levine, author of the bestseller Waking the Tiger, who developed Somatic Experiencing based on explorations of how animals deal with threat, nervous system overwhelm, and traumatic experiences on a daily basis.SE focuses on regulation of the nervous system and offers the opportunity to engage, complete, and resolve the body’s instinctual responses to traumatic experiences.

For more information regarding Somatic Experiencing and the SE professional training program, please visit: traumahealing.org/TTP

Dr. Sam Himelstein is a youth worker, author, speaker, and licensed psychologist in the state of California. Most of his work has revolved around working with trauma-impacted, juvenile justice-involved, substance-using youth. He is the founder and CEO of the Center for Adolescent Studies, a multi-disciplinary training institute that teaches youth professionals how to build authentic relationships, practice trauma-informed care, and share mindfulness with young people.

Dr. Himelstein is a formerly incarcerated youth and was privileged to change from a path of drugs, violence, crime, and self-destruction to that of healing and transformation. He has written three books, the most recent being Trauma-Informed Mindfulness With Teens: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals (Norton, 2019), and it's this one which we're focusing on today!

16 Jan 2018Episode 266: Stephanie Seldin Howard: The Weight of Honor00:38:49
A large part of my focus with The Trauma Therapist | Podcast has been supporting those therapists and the filmmakers who work with and/or help to heal military veterans. There have been a number of filmmakers and I take it as one of my goals to do what I can to support their work. Today I have as my guest Stephanie Seldin Howard, the Director and Producer of The Weight of Honor (https://theweightofhonormovie.com/), a documentary about families caring for their catastrophically wounded loved ones returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Stephanie believes empathy is the driving force behind storytelling, something she attributes to her 25-year career as a broadcast news producer. The Omaha, Nebraska native is the recipient of a Los Angeles Emmy Award coupled with two additional Los Angeles Emmy nominations. Stephanie has produced specials and documentaries for CNN, Fox News Channel, and Reuters as well as local coverage for KNBC-TV and KTTV-TV in Los Angeles. In 2014 she was awarded the Roy W. Dean Grant awarded by From the Heart Productions, making her documentary The Weight of Honor possible. This is a pretty incredible documentary and the inside story about how the film was made is no less inspiring.

14 Aug 2014Episode 9: Bill Bowen, MFA, LMT00:54:06
Bill Bowen, MFA, LMT, is the founder and director of Psycho-Physical Therapy
This unique therapeutic method has evolved from his 35 years of experience working with the creative process, body therapy, somatic psychology and spirituality. The active integration of the physical and psychological has been the continuing focus of his work. He believes that the fragmentation of body, mind, and spirit, which is common in our contemporary culture, is at the root of much of the trauma and suffering we see in our clients. Central to this work is the exploration of the mind/body interface and the establishment of centering presence. He works with clients to help them re-establish optimal psycho-physical resources necessary to live peaceful and integrated lives.

02 Oct 2017Episode 251: If You're Going Through Hell Keep Going. Carl Waggett00:40:54
This week I’m proud to announce that I have a firefighter, Carl Waggett, back on the podcast. (Carl was a guest back on episode 229 of The Trauma Therapist | Podcast (http://www.thetraumatherapistproject.com/podcast/used-laugh-ptsd-carl-wagget-firefighter/).) Carl’s on a mission to help others heal from PTSD. He’s got a podcast (http://www.ptsdbunkergearforyourbrain.com/), he’s doing Facebook Live, and he’s on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1CaHPbBb_bMjhSWI0SXTtA). With everything he’s got going on I think it’s fair to say that he’s put together a pretty amazing tour de force, and all with the goal of helping others heal, and avoiding some of the missteps he took along his journey. Carl’s been a full-time firefighter for the past 14 years, and Acting Captain for 4 of them.  After a fellow-firefighter and close friend of Carl’s ended his own life, Carl removed himself from the front line trucks only to be diagnosed with PTSD a short time afterward. Carl says he’s learning that there are many sides to this very intelligent disorder, and would simply like to share his experiences in the hope that others understand that PTSD is more of a winnable battle then you think. Carl started his podcast, PTSD Bunker Gear For Your Brain (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ptsd-bunker-gear-for-your-brain-podcast/id1206636820?mt=2&ign-mpt=uo%3D4), after his experiences with PTSD and to help other first responders.

11 Aug 2015Episode 109: Anna Berardi, PhD00:38:32
Anna Berardi, PhD., Lic Marriage & Family Therapist, Lic Prof Counselor Director of the Trauma Response Institute (http://www.georgefox.edu/counseling-programs/clinics/tri/index.html) and Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at George Fox University - Portland, Oregon.
Anna’s specialty in trauma includes work as a private practitioner, graduate mental health educator, with special emphasis on directing the TRI, including the post-graduate certificate in trauma response services (http://www.georgefox.edu/counseling-programs/clinics/tri/TRI-Post-Grad-Certificate-Info.html).
The approach of the institute is to prepare a variety of professionals to understand human struggle and response through a trauma-informed approach, whether working with k-12 students, individuals, couples, or families overwhelmed with a sudden trauma, or coping with the long-term consequences of trauma.
Another unique feature of their trauma-informed approach is recognizing the role issues of privilege and marginalization play in creating and exacerbating one's exposure to traumatic events. I view all forms of trauma work as an element of social justice work, just as social justice principles inform our assessment of trauma's cause and impact.

You can access the telesummit by clicking here.   (http://treatingtraumawithoutdrama.com/GuyMacpherson) Dr. Sherman earned an MSW and PhD in social work from Rutgers University.  She has been a social work educator for 35 years and has presented numerous workshops on culture, ethics, grieving, and self-care.  She also had a private practice for 20 years specializing in the areas of trauma, adoption, and grief.  She is President of Healing Is Possible, LLC, an education and training company.

30 Apr 2018Episode 281: The Heart is The Keeper Of Truth. Julia Rose M. Polk, M.A. LMFT00:34:49
When I initially began this podcast, when asked, I would have said that it’s about. Now? It’s truly about so much more. It’s about the incredible people and the story of their lives and what’s compelled them to do the inspiring work of helping those who’ve been impacted by trauma. It’s about inspiration and the courage to reflect on one’s own life and the cultivation of authenticity. My guest this week, Julia Rose, exemplifies this. And it's the reason why, before I’d even finished my first interview with her, I knew I wanted to have her back on. And quickly. You can listen to Julia’s first interview here, episode 272 (https://www.thetraumatherapistproject.com/podcast/the-art-of-being-real-with-julia-rose/) Julia Rose is an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of the West, and is Founder and President of Trauma Camp (https://app.xtensio.com/folio/67sornt5), a professional development and consultation company that trains educators about trauma-informed and relationship-based approaches in the classroom. For over a decade, Julia Rose has been studying specifically the impacts of early childhood trauma on adult mental health and behavior, some of this research culminating into her master’s thesis entitled: The Effects of Spanking On Mental Health, and Why Clinicians Need to Know (2016). In her work with clients over the years, she has consistently found that at the root of depression, anxiety, addiction, compulsion, and a range of other mental health issues is a childhood which involved one or more traumatic incidents that have yet to be acknowledged, expressed or resolved. Tremendous shifts occur when this is done, as it allows these wounds to begin to heal. She is also certified by the International Association of Trauma Professionals as a Youth Trauma Treatment Professional, and has begun training from the ChildTrauma Academy’s Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics. Importantly, Julia Rose has also spent half her life addressing, treating, reducing and resolving the impact of her own early childhood trauma--experience which serves as her foundational knowledge on this topic.

Today it’s about what it means to be a healer in the true sense of the word. My guest, Marriane Hennigar was drawn to helping people heal from the time she was a young girl. Now, with some experience and education she’s created her own program to assist in the healing process.

Since childhood Marianne’s been fascinated by how people work.

Marianne’s currently engaged in masters level classes in psychology with the aim to finish her degree in the next year. Additionally, she’s seeking certification in Somatic Experiencing and Brainspotting, both body-based modalities which support the client harnessing their own internal wisdom through focus to discover healing.

Over the course of their short lives, they lost their abilities to walk, see, and manage their personal care. Louise founded the Joy Thru Tears Foundation in 2021. Joy Thru Tears is passionate about honoring the love, dedication and tireless commitment caregivers provide to whomever they assist. Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute:

A big thank-you to my sponsor for this episode, Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute.

Trauma may be a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be a life sentence. Somatic Experiencing is a psychobiological method of addressing clients’ physical and emotional trauma conditions, and helps to give voice to their experiences without a need for them to retell the story. For more information please visit: https://traumahealing.org/kser

Joshua’s background includes participation in social change efforts, movements for social equality and ecological sustainability, and he maintains a passion for encouraging and assisting communities working toward the creation of a just and healthful society.

Joshua envisions Somatic Experiencing becoming an integral part of healing and transforming our world, and feels greatly inspired when helping professionals integrate these simple principles for treating and transforming trauma and distress.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/exclusive-content

13 Feb 2017Episode 216: Fly Fishing & Healing Trauma with Eric Hastings00:43:31
A few months ago I was sitting at home, scrolling through Netflix and came across a documentary titled, Not Yet Begun To Fight (http://www.notyetbeguntofightfilm.com/). The film was incredible and inspiring. It centered around Colonel Eric Hastings and a foundation he started several years ago called, Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation (https://warriorsandquietwaters.org/), whose mission is to, through fly fishing in Montana, create positive change in the lives of post-9/11 combat veterans. I found Eric’s email, we scheduled an interview, and here we are. What Eric’s doing with his foundation, and the passion with which he’s doing it, coupled with the inspiring way he’s touching the lives of combat veterans, is what this podcast is all about. Eric is a Bozeman, Montana native who graduated from Bozeman Senior High School. Although he was offered a full scholarship for music to Missoula, he turned it down, knowing that the only place he truly wanted to go was Montana State College (now MSU). At the encouragement of his father, Eric enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1960 at the age of 17. He wanted to be an aviator and knew that the Marine Corps was the connection he needed. Eric graduated in 1964 with a degree in history, philosophy and English, also earning his officer’s commission and marrying his high school sweetheart in the same year. Eric ended up attending every level of military school imaginable and earned two master's degrees along the way. After attending the necessary military schools, Eric moved to Hawaii where he learned to fly the F-8 Crusader, an airplane he fell in love with. He then learned to fly the A-4 Skyhawk, which he flew for the majority of his career, including the 168 combat missions in Vietnam. After his tour in Vietnam, Eric was sent to several places around the world, eventually reaching the rank of colonel. Remarkably, he was the chief of staff for Marine forces during Operation Desert Storm, in 1990-91.

This interview is a first with The Trauma Therapist | Podcast.

In this interview, (the first of 3 in a series), Sarah leads us in an introduction to the 8 neurological circuits (eg, happiness, disgust, and seeking, to name just a few) that were initially introduced by the late Estonian neuroscientist, Jaak Panksepp.

Sarah talks about how these different circuits are impacted and influenced by trauma, what's involved with treating them, and how clinicians can learn to identify whether or not they've been impacted.

Today, in episode #1, we talk about rage.

14 Sep 2020Episode 478: Dr. Don Wood. Resetting the Memories of Trauma00:47:36
Dr. Don Wood developed the Inspired Performance Institute after spending years researching how trauma affects our minds and our lives. Dr. Wood began to understand that events and experiences throughout our lifetime continue to play a role in how we experience life in the present. He also realized that there was a better way of treating the issue. “Teaching people to live with, manage and cope with the daily stress doesn’t fix the problem. The solution comes from understanding it’s source and providing a long-term permanent solution”.

Dr. Wood’s background experience has come from spending time in the for profit and nonprofit world. This combination provided a unique perspective on problem solving. He used these skills to develop the Inspired Performance Institute and the NEURO XP program.

Dr. Wood has written two books about his research including the science about how our minds work and why we experience our own unique perspective of the world. Both books are focused on how we can all make the desired changes by allowing our mind to reset and reboot. He has spoken on these topics domestically and internationally.
