10 Oct 2023EP5: What is The Constraints-Led Approach (CLA)? 00:44:02

In this episode, Alex Sarama explores the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) in basketball, in addition to its underlying theory of ecological dynamics. He provides practical examples of how to implement the CLA with players of all levels, from beginners to the NBA and WNBA.

17 Oct 2023EP7: Why You SHOULDN’T Run Pass and Cut Offense00:20:50

Alex Sarama discusses the problems with "pass and cut" motion offense in youth basketball, proposing an alternative approach. He argues that the pattern-based nature of the offense does not align with an ecological dynamics rationale. Instead, Alex suggests focusing on principles of play such as spacing and advantage creation. Alex also highlights many of the limitations behind automatic "pass and cut”, such as reducing affordances for off-ball cuts and driving opportunities. He highlights the need for coaches to think differently rather than resorting to the same old methods that have been repeated over multiple decades.

05 Dec 2023EP21: What is Nonlinear Pedagogy & Why is it So Important For Basketball Coaches with Philip O’Callaghan 00:38:51

In this episode, Alex Sarama is joined by Philip O'Callaghan to discuss the nonlinear nature of learning and how it applies to basketball performance. He explains that humans are nonlinear systems, and learning does not follow a straight line progression. He emphasizes the importance of individualizing practice environments and designing tasks that are representative of the game. Philip also introduces the five key principles of nonlinear pedagogy: manipulation of constraints, representative learning design, attentional focus, information movement coupling, and functional variability. He and Alex provide practical examples of how coaches can apply these principles in a closeout situation, and highlight the importance of consequences and task simplification.

08 Dec 2023EP22: How do Games-Based Approaches Differ from the CLA?00:30:13

In this episode, Alex Sarama discusses the differences between a games-based approach and a constraint-led approach (CLA) in basketball coaching. He emphasizes that while a games-based approach may be enjoyable for players, it lacks the intentional use of constraints for skill adaptation that the CLA offers. Alex explains that a games-based approach originated in the 1980s as a way to make physical education lessons more enjoyable and improve problem-solving skills. He demonstrates how manipulating constraints and creating specific environments can enhance skill development and decision-making in players. Alex also provides examples of how the CLA can be applied to common small-sided games in basketball, such as one-on-one, three-on-three chaser games, and three-on-three pass keep away.

In this episode, Alex Sarama discusses the concept of principles of play and how they can be developed through the constraint-led approach (CLA). He explains that many offensive and defensive schemes in basketball are highly controlled, which can over-constrain players’ behaviors. Instead, he advocates for using principles of play, which provide possibilities and shape players' intentions without stipulating specific actions. Alex conceptualizes offense as creating advantages and converting them successfully and uses the concept of medals to guide shot selection. He also discusses the application of principles of play in transition and defense which as with offense are centered around adaptability.

In this episode, Alex Sarama and Adam, address common challenges and questions they have received regarding the application of contemporary skill acquisition ideas in basketball. Key Takeaways:

01:35 - I want to see results not science. What NBA Players have trained with the CLA to prove this contemporary approach works?

03:42 - The science is sitting on a surface level understanding of basketball, big leaps are made to tie skill acquisition to science.

08:15 - How can a player perform a skill without being first taught it explicitly? How can a youth player that cannot dribble a ball suddenly play 1-on-1 or a more complex small sided game?

09:50 - There are multiple learning styles. I wouldn't want a players to organically learn a jump shot when then jump shot took 30 years to appear. Youth players aren't going to reinvent the game quickly. The CLA should be used for some things but without ignoring best practices that evolved over time.
