In this episode of the Trailer Music Composer’s Podcast I got to chat with the freelance music supervisor, Emma Middleton (@rubatomusic_uk). 

In our conversation, Emma was so wonderfully transparent about all the aspects of music supervision and how she came to be in that role. This is gonna be such a helpful interview to listen to togive you a better understanding of how the trailer music world works.

Emma is a trailer-specialist Music Supervisor. Off the back of in-house agency experience, she launched freelance (in the middle of the pandemic!) in 2021 and set up her company, ‘Rubato Music’ (with an ethos based around Rubato being her favourite musical term).

Emma was voted “Music Supervisor of the Year” in 2020 at AIM Sync and is both winner + nominee of Music & Sound Awards for her custom music supervision work on The Crown Season 3 trailer & Season 4 teaser. Also a composer, she occasionally jumps in and gets her hands dirty – recent work: a collaboration on “The Witcher” Season 2 Teaser Trailer. 

Besides music, she's a self-proclaimed 'cat lady', and an avid gamer who's very excited for the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us to come out...

Emma enjoys discovering and applying unusual or unexpected tracks to experiment and have fun with the trailer form, whilst keeping a firm handle on the necessary pacing and intensity required for these campaigns.

In this episode of the Trailer Music Composer’s Podcast I am joined by not one, but two very special guests. The supervisor/composer duo Emma Middleton (@rubatomusic_uk) and Kiaran Scragg (@fortnowhere).

Together the two of them wrote the track featured on the teaser trailer of The Witcher Season 2. On the show they go into so much detail on how they wrote the track together, even down to the samples they recorded and the plugins on the mastering chain.

This interview was such an insight into the world of custom covers.

Here’s a little bit about Emma and Kiaran:

Kieran Scragg is the Creative Director of My Hart Canyon Music Ltd. In his twenties he toured the world and made albums with two bands and as a result had a history in tv and film sync before approaching the trailer world with songs used on Greys Anatomy and The Twilight Saga. 

Kieran’s signed to Pusher and has worked on trailers such as ‘Death on the Nile, The Crown S3 trailer and S4 teaser, The Many Saints of Newark, Dr Death and The Witcher S2 teaser. He lives in on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon and has two kids, two gerbils and a wife. He’s listened to Richard’s podcast for a number of years, usually whilst making his lunch so he’s very excited to be on it!

In this episode of the podcast I talk about “Pigeon-holing” your music.

I came across this notion (not for the first time) in some comments on Facebook. 

Now you all know how I feel about cynical/critical people. BUT, this comment sparked a thought that I should probably give my ‘two cents’ on this.

I think so many composers (people in general) are riddled with fear and anxiety about their abilities. The sad thing is that this fear is often masked by being overly critical of others, perhaps even being a tad too driven by an ego. 

I’m not standing on a pedestal saying how great I am because I have overcome my ego - I have not. I am saying that we need to keep ourselves in check by asking something like “am I reacting out of fear or out of love and excitement?”

In this episode of the podcast I talk about why it’s important to use big trailer hits in your trailer music.

This goes back to something I am always saying to students, “Trailer music is about character, build, and impact”. Yes, you guessed it, these hits take you one step closer to getting that impact that you need.

Why do you even need impact? 

We are dealing with stories. These stories are usually set against a larger world. We as composers are representing these stories and struggles in our music so we also have to give the viewers/listeners a sense of these large tales. These big hits supply the sense of something bigger. Something larger than life.

I go into more detail about this and how you can even use hits to speed up your writing.

In this episode I show you how I composed the track ‘Monument’ that was featured in the trailer for the Netflix show, Archive 81.

This track was one of the ten tracks written for Elephant Music’s album, Throat 4.

The focus of this album was to bring throat singing to the fore and let vocals replace the cello that had become so popular.

I sketched out the entire album using only my voice and then slowly replaced those parts with other instruments and we even got a throat singer in to really hammer home that sound.

I really enjoyed writing this album as it felt so fresh and exciting.

In today’s episode I take you behind the scenes of a track of mine that was used in the trailer for Netflix’s special, Britney vs Spears.

The track was a track I wrote for a two album release from Mammoth. The albums were solely epic drum intros aimed at action comedy trailers.

The effect of each track was to give the editors percussive tracks that started small, gave them good cut points, and also supplied enough drive and impact to create enough drama for their trailers.

I really enjoyed writing all of these 20 tracks and as this track was one of the first I was really happy to see it land on this trailer. 

I am also a huge fan of Britney Spears, so doubly awesome really.

Hey Guys,

In today’s episode I talk to trailer music and video game composer Sigurd Jøhnk-Jensen.

A few months ago he reached out to me on Instagram to tell me about his journey.  I was so inspired by Sigurd’s story that I had to get him on the show. 

Sigurd is a composer and live musician. Having toured Europe multiple times most recently with Blindstone and Walter Trout. Music composition credits mainly in video games and trailers include; Killing Floor, Marvels Eternals House Of Gucci, Scream and many more.

This episode was such a joy to record. Sigurd has a very wise head on his shoulders and delivers some absolute gems when it comes to your mental health and balancing your work with your life.

I came away from this interview wanting to be more kind to myself and I think you will too.

In today’s episode I walk you through the Trailer Music that was used in A Very British Scandal.

This was a bit of a double win for me as this track was a track that I wrote when teaching how to write Emotional Solo String pieces for the Protege Pro students.

I’m gonna be totally honest here, I still suffer from bouts of imposter syndrome and fears of it all falling apart (ie not winning any more trailers and everyone finding out that I am a fraud).

Not easy to admit but feels pretty good and hopefully helps you realise that that stuff doesn’t just go away.

So, winning this trailer with this track was the proof in the pudding that I needed to remind me that the stuff I am teaching is relevant and useful still.

This after all is one of the purposes for Protege’s existence; to teach people how to write in many different styles and to make each track ready for sync (sale).

In this episode I talk to the award winning trailer music composer Kati Falk-Flores. Kati shared how she went from studying the French Horn (among other instruments) to learning the ropes of writing trailer music.

We talked a lot about the importance of a positive mental attitude and how it can help not only get you out of a funk but also lift those around you.

Kati Falk-Flores is a composer known for her start in trailer music. Her work has been recently featured in trailers like Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage, the Xbox Series X trailer, and Finch.

Kati has additionally written music for advertising and sonic branding, choral and orchestral works, and just finished a film scoring project.

In today’s episode I talk with composer Jon R. Mohr. Jon reached out to me on Instagram about coming on the show. He was keen to share his story of going from nothing to now writing for trailer publishers all whilst dealing with his speech impediment.

In this episode I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Christian Henson (@christianhensonmusic). An absolute legend of a man and a super nice dude! 

Once I got my initial fanboying out of the way Christian and I had a fascinating conversation about his earliest memories as a composer and how he got into the business, the origins of Spitfire audio, dealing with his anxiety and his "secret" to productivity.

I was incredibly honoured that Christian was so open and honest about his anxiety and hearing that one of the composers whom I look up to most has suffered from it too it was like a weight off my shoulders.

You will also be interested to hear that we both share similar ideas of what being "productive" looks like and how you can adapt that to your own life.

I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Yoav Goren on the Trailer Music Composer’s podcast.

For those of you who don’t know Yoav, is the co-founder of Immediate music with Jeff Fayman. Together they played an enormous part in shaping the railer music world and even the epic music world as we know it. Yoav and Jeff also went on to found 1 Revolution music which is a production music company focused on producing music for use on TV.

Happy New Year Everyone - 2022 is here and what a way to kick it off (albeit it a little late) than to re-launch the Trailer Music Composer’s Podcast!?

You may have noticed that I took a little break from producing episodes for the show/site. I was simply following my own advice and giving myself some space for reflection and to avoid overwhelm whilst Vik and I launched the second year of Protege.

So what should you expect from the Trailer Music Composers’ Podcast this year?

Firstly I am not going to stray from the solo banter / monolog format we have all come to know and love. It gives me a reason to leave the house and enjoy the local woods whilst also getting to answer some of your burning questions about Trailer Music.

Secondly I have lots of very exciting guests lined up to join me on the show and give you all some super awesome insights into the world of Trailer Music.

The Trailer Music School is Changing

I’m also going to take this opportunity to tell you that the Trailer Music School is going through some changes. It’s basically becoming a teenager. It's so different.

Not that I need to explain the inner workings of the business BUT the courses are being migrated off of wordpress and onto another platform.

All New Inventive Instruments Are Here…

I have been busy producing a load of new instruments for my own use. I have used these new instruments on all of the latest Elephant Music releases and now I am going to be releasing them to the public.

As you know I launched this company a few years ago but let it take a back seat whilst I worked on the TMS and Protege (and my writing of course). 

I felt kind of bad for myself putting all that time into these products and then just leaving them on my own hard drive to only be used by me. As you know I believe that we should be sharing what we do with the world and seeing it as a kind of service.

So, I decided to get all my Inventive Instruments ready and put them in a bundle of joy. 

There are 10 previously unreleased Kontakt instruments in the bundle and, well, I think it’s totally awesome. Of course I would though right!?

I will keep you posted when this is ready.
