Tim is a proper OG adventure rider, but we didn't call it that back then.  A serial traveller, he rode to Bulgaria in the 90s, and got into all kind of scrapes.

More recently he rode the ACT in Portugal.  He rides a big bike, but he's alright with us.

19 Jul 2022TAMP Season 3 Episode 8 The Perfect Trail and Adventure (TET) Motorbike01:07:38

Send us a message...

Want to know definitively which is the best trail and adventure bike for the Trans Euro Trail (TET)?  Then you have come to the right place, for a complete mix of opinions.

Greg Villalobos has made another lovely holiday video from our trip to Spain earlier this year.  It's available on Adventure Spec's YouTube channel.

https://youtu.be/MoziGlQBno0

It should probably have more of me in it, but Adam makes up for it with his in helmet hilarity/weirdness.

It is currently called "Lightweight adventure riding & wild camping in the Spainish mountains".  Catchy.

We have a massive argument about which was the best bike on the trip (except Adam's GS310, because Adam couldn't make it, and lets face it the GS310 is a rare choice.)

We all agree it is my bike (or one of the others) then I edit out everything I don't agree with, and add some extra content once everybody else has gone.  A clear winner then.  Or maybe not...

13 Mar 2023TAMP Season 4 Episode 7 Brett Anderson The Last Big Ride01:06:13

Send us a message...

Brett Anderson was living a healthy and active life with his wife and dog in Hot Springs, Virginia.  He had worked as a pilot for United Airlines for 26 years out of Washington D.C. and was a senior Captain flying International routes to Europe and South America.  In the late summer of 2021 he noticed that he was having excessive shortness of breath with simple exertions, such as walking up a slight hill, something very unusual for him as he regularly ran 3-4 miles a day, rode motorcycles off-road, and lifted weights.   As this continued and got worse Brett went to his doctor who took a chest x-ray and immediately sent him to the local emergency room, where they admitted him to the hospital for 4 days.  He was diagnosed with Chronic Eosinophilic Pneumonia, a type of Autoimmune Lung disease.   After being released and started on a treatment regimen, he got better for a while, but then stopped improving after a few months.  He could not get back to running and other cardio activities without extreme shortness of breath.

Concerned about the long-term effects, Brett went to one of the top pulmonology clinics in the world, the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester MN, where he was eventually diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis as a result of the Eosinophilic Pneumonia.

Knowing that PF is a terminal lung disease, but not knowing if he had one year or many left, Brett decided to not only fulfill some dreams of his own by riding his motorcycle in different areas around the world, but to use his journeys to inspire others and to show that a bad medical diagnosis does not mean you have to stop living your life.  Because the FAA has decided that he cannot keep flying with this disease, his career is currently on hold, but he is working with his doctors to convince the FAA that he is safe to keep flying at his current disease level.   In the meantime, Brett decided to raise money for Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness and research through a fundraiser for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

05 Jun 2023TAMP Season 4 Episode 16 Adventure Country Tracks (ACT)00:47:05

Send us a message...

"Adventure Country Tracks e.V. is a registered organization whose mission is to establish and maintain off-road routes and tracks in European countries for so-called adventure motorcycles / dual purpose bikes.

By providing information, advocacy and promoting responsible motorcycle travel, ACT seeks to preserve motorcycling on unpaved roads in the hinterland for generations to come and also to promote tourism in rural areas. Adventure Country Tracks works with enthusiastic partners in some countries of Europe, with tourism authorities, land administrations, forest services, tourist boards, tour operators, etc. to provide routes and remote roads for motorcycling.

By investing in communication and hopefully supporting local small businesses, guesthouses, and local resources, ACT is able to provide GPS tracks and advice, create photo and video archives of the routes, and educate the motorcycle community on the routes.

Our desire is to provide a detailed documentation of the routes, areas and backgrounds and to motivate the traveler to follow these routes. Epic rides that you can self-guide, taken at your speed, with your friends just however you like to travel. Trails that take you away from population into empty valleys, up windswept hills and mountains, that place you in the nature, and roads – empty sinuous country roads – that make the breaks between the trails every bit as fascinating."

Something new, and in video form!

Bikes in Barns is a new thing for us.  We travel to meet some fascinating people and talk to them about there amazing bikes and the adventures they have had on them.

Feel free to listen, but you can watch the film here;

https://www.youtube.com/@TheTAMPodcast/videos

Join us for an incredible journey down memory lane as we explore the captivating world of motorbikes and trail riding. In the first part of the episode, I share my childhood obsession with motorbikes, influenced by iconic figures like Barry Sheen and Graham Noyce, and my dad's love for bikes. I reflect on my first bike, touring Europe with my dad, and how my bedroom walls were plastered with pictures of motorbikes. From dreaming of becoming a mechanic to actually designing and building my own bikes, the fascination never faded.

The second part of the episode shifts gears to the thrill of riding. I talk about my own collection of bikes, from the Honda CB125S, which I converted into a schoolboy scrambler and raced at 12 years old, to the 2021 Honda CRF 300 Rally that I recently upgraded with rally raid suspension. Additionally, I share my experiences with the Beta Evo 300 two-stroke, which I use for trials riding. Lastly, I extend an invitation to listeners to join me in creating a film about the bikes and the podcast, and reveal my plans for a trail riding weekend in the Peak District. Buckle up and ride along as we explore this exciting world together.

Send us a message...

https://helmetinspection.co.uk/

"A helmet can be a costly purchase, and the thought of replacing it before it’s absolutely necessary often influences our outlook towards risk.

Our decision-making can also be fuelled if we’ve never had to call on our helmet to save us from serious injury.

If there’s little or no visible signs of damage, we’ve now got the perfect storm and it becomes easy to convince ourselves it’ll be okay.

Out of sight, out of mind.

When our founder accidentally dropped a new motorcycle helmet, he wanted to know if it would continue to perform as intended, or if he needed to retire the helmet and purchase a replacement. Is it still safe to use?

The thought of shelling out for a replacement wasn’t appealing.

Friends provided anecdotal evidence and further words of reassurance, all suggesting the helmet would be okay to continue to use:

  • “Your head wasn’t in it at the time, it’ll be okay”
  • “If a helmet can’t withstand a small drop like that, it’s never going to protect you if you came off”
  • “That’s just cosmetic. You definitely don’t need a new helmet”
  • “I saw a helmet guy on a YouTube video, and he said …”

All very convincing … so the helmet continued to be used for another few months.

But our man was far from convinced, and the doubt was creeping in when he was out on his bike.

He took the helmet to his local retailer, and asked the OEM-trained technician to carry out an inspection.

The retailer provided a thorough visual inspection and declared  It should be fine

As thorough as this visual inspection appeared to be, the result wasn’t convincing.

What would happen if a different technician were to carry out another visual inspection on the same helmet?
Would it still be the same result?

He left the retailer’s premises with doubts and still lacked peace of mind. Is my helmet still safe to use?

So, we fixed it for you.

We’ve created a service that’s both affordable and convenient. And with an efficient 4-5 working days turnaround we don’t tie your helmet up at our lab for weeks on end.

What About The Dropped Helmet?

Safety-critical damage was identified during our test – and a new helmet was purchased.

Does That Mean A Dropped Helmet Is Definitely Compromised?
Absolutely not! Our man was just unlucky.

Since we started providing our service in July 2021, we’ve tested thousands of customer helmets and the pass rate is currently 75%."

We like to sell products we believe in and work well that is why we try and test every product we sell on our own shop bikes before offering the product to our customers, We also know that as good as a product can be it is not necessarily the best in all situations so using and testing products helps us help you when choosing right 1st time.

29 Jul 2024TAMP Season 6 Episode 17 Beth and Nick Munduro de Tontos00:55:01

Send us a message...

"Nick and Beth, a young British couple, embarked on the journey of a lifetime; a motorcycle expedition from Texas to Ushuaia, Argentina.  However, their adventure took a harrowing turn in Belize:

It's almost 1am and Beth and Nick are camped in an established campground in Belize when five men armed with guns and machetes cut their way into the tent claiming to be police. After being pulled outside, the pair were then bound with ropes and forced to surrender all their possessions: Phones, GPS devices, Cameras, Go Pros, Helmet Comms, Tools, $700 in cash and memory cards filled with cherished trip photographs. This process involved an hour of Beth and Nick watching while the thieves broke into / cut open all their luggage, tipping all of their belongings onto the floor in pouring rain. Within the hour Beth and Nick’s losses amounted to almost 7000 GBP / 8800 USD.

Sadly it gets worse. After finding some spent ammunition kept as a souvenir from the USA, the thieves believed Beth and Nick were armed. Repeated explanations about the spent brass were in vain and Nick endured physical assault, being repeatedly kicked in the face with his hands tied behind his back, he was hit in the back of the head with a hunting rifle and suffered a bad concussion. Beth endured a terrifying sexual assault. Nick described to me the terror they felt while thieves put a machete to each of their throats and pointed a gun at their kneecaps, repeatedly counting down to zero in an attempt to make them reveal the location of the non-existent guns. Beth and Nick were eventually left, albeit with nothing of value but their motorcycles (which the thieves were unable to operate) face down in the mud with the hands tied. They remained here for several hours before being freed.

The police were then called, who visited the scene of the crime at 4am for just 30 minutes before leaving without offering the couple any shelter, form of communication, or peace of mind. Despite the trauma and lack of support from local authorities, Nick and Beth displayed remarkable resilience. They decided to leave the campsite immediately for their own safety, packing their soaked belongings into what luggage was still useable, they rode through the night seeking refuge in a gas station 40km away until the morning.
