Founder Harry Gerstner

The History of an American Legend

1884 was a very important year for H. Gerstner & Sons. It was the year company founder Harry Gerstner was born. Some other very notable and interesting events were taking place around the country at this time: the Statue of Liberty was completed, Boston and New York were first linked by telephone, the Cincinnati Reds held their first game at Crosley Field, and Dayton, Ohio, had its first paved street. Harry Gerstner first started working when he left high school at age 17. He signed on as a woodworking apprentice to become a pattern-maker starting at a salary of six cents an hour. At the completion of his four-year apprenticeship, Harry received a one hundred dollar bonus and was earning ten cents an hour – top wages for a journeyman woodworker in the Dayton area.

Harry Gerstner made his first tool chest while working as a pattern-maker. It took him a year to design and make, as he only spent evenings working on it. After it was completed a friend remarked that he would like to have one of these well-designed chests, so Harry built another one. Some of his fellow workers commented on how well made it was, and this got him thinking that there may be a demand for his chests, as they were better and different than anything on the market at that time. So, in 1906 while the Wright Brothers were perfecting their first airplane, Harry Gerstner used the 100 dollar bonus from his job and founded his own tool chest company. He picked up his first orders by making evening door to door sales calls on his many friends and acquaintances.

Since I have already found my life's work, instead of my "credentials" how about just a little about me - 

I believe that nothing in life worth having comes easy. Windy City equipment is my Primary business (Cooking Equipment/Refrigeration/HVAC repair) and we are currently trying to set a new standard for what it means to be a service company. We have free how-to YouTube videos, social media presence, interactive webpage, and now even a mobile app. This, of course, is coupled with recruiting and training the best technicians in the industry and making customer service the highest of priorities with a heavy emphasis on communication.

SchaiHi Partners is my secondary business, which is a full-fledged real estate investment firm. We acquire property of all types, all over the country and create Win-Win situations for all parties involved in every transaction.

In 2019 I published a book called "Blue is the New White: The Best Path to Success that No One Told You About - Until Now" in an attempt to shatter the common misperceptions about the skilled trades to today's youth. We implement curriculum designed by industry leaders to train individuals in the skilled trades. Then we leverage industry suppliers, employers and job placement programs to help job-ready candidates find the right employer.

Our Story:

Home economics? Clarinet lessons? College? No way! I wanted shop class; a drum kit; a stint in trade school. But “non-traditional jobs for women” weren’t a thing in the 1980s, so off to college I went.

After graduation, I got a great job at EDSI helping low-income, non-custodial parents, and ex-offenders train for and find employment in career pathway positions. I spent over 20 years helping people take control of their futures, and in the process built a great network of industry professionals who helped these individuals reach their goals.

Meanwhile, I logged thousands of hours in my garage, tinkering with vintage items and repurposing flea market finds. My treasures were items other people threw out. I spent time on the tools, feeling accomplished by mastering new skills. My garage became the trade school I never got to attend.

Then the coronavirus made its way around the world, and 41 million people lost their jobs. Many of these jobs are not coming back. I recognized an opportunity in the lack of young people pursuing the skilled trades, where jobs are plentiful. I thought to myself, “Why not merge my career with my avocation and help people find meaningful, sustainable employment in the trades?” Thus, Garage82 was born.

Let me explain the logo. The garage is my happy place, where I go to be creative and relax. “82” represents the 9-year recidivism rate of ex-offenders in the United States, a population I worked with throughout my career. This number is too high! Lowering it requires tapping into each individual’s potential and helping them find steady work with a living wage, something that is almost impossible given the hurdles this population faces upon re-entry.

Finally, the octopus intrigues me. Did you know the octopus has three hearts and nine brains? This sea creature symbolizes flexibility, creativity, intelligence, and expansion—qualities I seek to emulate through Garage82. Together, the name and the logo represent my experiences and my goals.

ACE Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship programs train participants in a skilled trade profession. Apprentices work as full-time paid employees of a registered training sponsor company. Programs include hands-on workplace training and related instruction in a classroom setting. Successful completion of each four-level program culminates in a portable, nationally recognized NCCER credential. ACE Apprenticeship classes are approved by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) standards for apprenticeship related technical instruction.

  • As a full-time employee of the sponsoring employer, a Registered Apprentice completes a minimum of 2,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training and 144 hours of related technical instruction during each year of the apprenticeship
  • ACE apprenticeship programs offer a four-level comprehensive curriculum aligned to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) standards
  • Each ACE class meets the annual DOLI related instruction requirement
  • Students who earn an apprenticeship certificate are eligible to sit for the corresponding journeyman licensure exam
  • Classes meet twice weekly, once online and once in person

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), located in Northern Virginia, is the nation’s 9th largest public school system, serves a diverse population of more than 180,000 students in grades prekindergarten through 12. Fairfax County high schools are recognized annually by the Washington Post as being among the most challenging high schools in the U.S. FCPS is the third largest employer in Virginia, with 24,600 full-time staff positions. About Neil Hamovitch

In a world where noise pollution often disrupts tranquility, one man has made it his mission to bring peace to those who crave it. Meet Neil Hamovitch, the owner of a rising small business, Soundproof San Diego, a company dedicated to the art and science of soundproofing.

Neil’s journey into the world of soundproofing began with his passion for music at the age of 14, when he discovered the challenge of securing a practice space that wouldn’t disrupt others. His college years introduced him to hourly rehearsal studios with soundproofed rooms, sparking his curiosity about sound isolation.  In 2003 when he returned home from college, he was ignited to master sound reduction techniques when he became frustrated with trying to locate a suitable rehearsal studio for his new band. 

Over the next six years, he transformed a couple of rooms in a warehouse, conducting extensive research and experimentation, progressively improving the sound reduction capabilities of his rehearsal spaces. This expertise led to a turning point when a client asked him to build a drum studio in a garage. Collaborating with his father-in-law, a licensed contractor, they successfully created the home studio, realizing Neil’s untapped skillset.

Inspired by this experience, Neil obtained his contractor license, and in 2015, Soundproof San Diego was born. The company has undergone substantial growth since its inception, diversifying into various sound control areas. Their expertise now encompasses mitigating footstep noise between floors, treating shared walls, reducing traffic and airplane noise, enhancing windows and doors, and implementing reverberation acoustic solutions in a wide range of spaces.

In 1956 President Eisenhower established Operation Home Improvement, a nationwide effort emphasizing the rehabilitation of existing housing rather than new construction. The National Home Improvement Council (N.H.I.C) emerged from this effort.

By the mid-1960s, NERSICA no longer reflected the membership of the growing industry and its name was changed to the National Remodelers Association (NRA).

In 1983, the National Remodelers Association and the National Home Improvement Council joined to establish the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). Today, NARI has 58 chapters nationwide and has enjoyed a sizeable growth period during the past decade. In 2000, NARI moved its national headquarters from Alexandria, Virginia, to Des Plaines, Illinois, and as the Voice of the Remodeling IndustryTM, continues to prosper.

Electrical Technician Training Program

 

The Electrician Training Program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on training that they need to begin a rewarding career as an electrician. The program teaches students how to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in residential and commercial applications.

The great thing about the program is that it can be completed, and students can earn their diploma in as few as 10 months, placing them on the fast track to becoming entry-level electrician technicians.

Students are taught electrical wiring by working on skill-building stations in on-site labs at UEI College. Upon graduation from the program, students should be able to install wiring in new buildings and maintain and repair existing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

The program is hybrid, meaning it combines both online learning and in-classroom and lab training, making it easier than ever before for students to graduate from the program.

So, if you’re interested in becoming an electrician technician, consider enrolling in UEI’s Electrician Technician program; the program can be completed and a diploma earned in less than a year, providing you with the skills and hands-on training that you need to become an entry-level electrician technician.

 

Skills You Will Learn

The program is designed to provide students with a foundation for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

The program starts out by introducing students to basic safety precautions that electricians must take in construction and work sites. The program then proceeds to instruct students on electrical theory, covering the fundamentals of energy, transformers, capacitors, and power generation.

The program also covers flexible conduits and flexible cable assemblies, and NEC code requirements. Furthermore, the electrician course covers residential and commercial applications, introducing students to load calculations, lighting outlets, grounding, bonding, and three-phase electrical distribution systems.

The classes also include instruction on low voltage applications, motors, programmable logic controllers, and the fundamentals of solar panels.

The San Diego chapter of the PHCC was founded only 9 years later, in 1892, and, like its other chapters across the country, continues to advance the legacy initiatives of its founders. All PHCC chapters seek to provide training resources for plumbing and HVACR to their local members, and the San Diego chapter is honored to be one of the few chapters that can offer both.


2013

The PHCC of San Diego saw the opportunity in 2013 to provide their local P-H-C tradesmen with a platform for continued education and growth through a Journey-Level plumbing apprentice program. So the PHCC of San Diego Academy was formed. This 501(c)3 trade school is federally accredited by the Department of Labor Bureau of Apprenticeship Training and utilizes the NCCER curriculum. The HVAC-R Certification program is nine months long and follows a combination curriculum built by educators and HVAC technicians in the field.

Today, the Academy stands strong and steadfast with terrific staff, an improved curriculum, and a growing number of hands-on labs. The PHCC of San Diego Academy continues to add programs based on the needs of the industry, like the Back-flow Certification. Efforts also extend beyond the classroom, with an increased focus on community outreach specifically to San Diego County Agencies, high schools, and the military. Our office can also act as a recruiter for individuals seeking employment in the P-H-C industry. We do our best to match individuals to members based on their location, experience and initiative.

Jamie became an ironworker in 2002 when women only represented 2% of the workforce across Canada and the United States. She thoroughly understands the struggles and challenges of working a male dominated workforce and is on mission to break down the negative misconceptions and stereotypes.

 

Through KickAss Careers Jamies travels approximately 30 weeks a year providing engaging keynote presentations and workshops to more than 50,000 students, parents, educators and employers each year across North America. Her efforts have gained international notoriety for opening doors and minds to the possibilities of well-paid careers in skilled trades and technology sectors.

 

Over the years Jamie has received the Top 20 Under 40 Award for making an impact in the metal trades, the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Champion Award and District School Board of Niagara Technology Education Partnership Award for her commitment to youth in schools across the province of Ontario. 

In 2018 she received the Hamilton YWCA Women of Distinction Award for being a trailblazer excelling in her field promoting leadership and equal advancement opportunities. Call them businesses or a poor kid wanting money to buy candy, I always had a strong desire to work hard for monetary reward. The first real business where I made a good amount of money was when I was 10 years old, I learned how to make balloon animals from a book and started making balloon animals for kids birthday parties. Eventually that lead me to a man who had lots of connections in the entertainment business and by age 12 I was a full on clown doing magic, juggling, face paint and making balloon animals working at the spring fling, restaurants, birthday parties and many other events. Since then I have created dozens of successful businesses in many different industries. Publicize the importance and advantages of hiring, training and retraining qualified veteran and emphasize EDD’s priority services to veterans.

Encourage organized veterans’ groups and individuals to report all job openings to EDD field offices.

Form action committees to review local veterans employment issues and submit recommendations and comments on position papers to appropriate entities.

Assist individuals or organizations who may have questions, complaints, suggestions or recommendations on the employment services being provided to veterans by EDD.

Company History

The company was started by Robert McDonald in May of 2000 when he felt the need to provide higher quality service and products to the construction industry in Southeastern Wisconsin. The desire was to meet the challenging needs and high level of customer demands with Integrity, Superior Service and Unmatched Warranties. Based on the Southwestern corner of Milwaukee County in the City of Franklin, he formed Excel Custom Contractors, LLC. Excel Custom Contractors currently serves the entire Southeastern Wisconsin, Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois communities. We proudly searve Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, Brookfield, Franklin, Oak Creek, New Berlin, Pewaukee, Hartland, Lake Geneva and surrounding areas.

It was with the idea of providing ‘custom’ized customer service, to meet the unique individual tastes and product performance goals of his customers. Today Excel Custom Contractors has grown into a mid-sized Residential and Commercial General Contracting and Remodeling Company that can handle any size project from the foundation to the roof. Excel Custom Contractors prides itself in doing the best job the right way the first time, this ensures our customers will get what they expect from both their product choices and quality construction installations.

Since the Spring of 2009, Excel Custom Contractors has brought on a new addition to it’s ownership with James Lawrence Jr. of Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Jim has been working for Excel Custom Contractors for the previous five years as a Carpentar Foreman in which he ran many varying crews and has now become its Vice President and COO. Together with their combined expertise and knowledge of products and skillful installations Excel Custom Contractors is positioned to continue to grow and enhance its offerings to its every expanding customer base.

Before being appointed President and CEO of Home Builders Institute (HBI) in 2018, Brady led a large regional home building company in Illinois. Following the 2008 financial crisis, he served on the Bipartisan Policy Center Housing Commission, working with other leading experts to advance the nation's housing policy. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the Bipartisan Policy Center's (BPC) J. Ronald Terwilliger Center for Housing Policy. He has also served on boards for Chicago Federal Home Loan Bank, Enterprise Community Partners, Illinois Habitat for Humanity, as well as on other economic development and housing-related boards. Brady was the National Association of Home Builders 2016 Chairman. In 2018, he was inducted into the Illinois Home Builders Hall of Fame and in 2023 inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame.

Our History

After successfully running Peerless Plumbing Company and Nudrain Phoenix for over 20 years, Randy Rushing decided to retire and pass the torch to his son, Christian.  In 2019, Christian and his wife Lindsey took over all operations of Peerless Plumbing Company and Nudrain Phoenix.  Having specialized in NuDrain by NuFlow sewer lining for over 10 years, they branched out and created NuDrain Phoenix, a division of Peerless Plumbing Company and Nudrain Phoenix.  Since 2019, Christian and Lindsey have grown the company but kept the same business structure that his father built.  His father knew that helping the community was a top priority, and we've kept it that way. Peerless Plumbing Company and Nudrain Phoenix does not rely on high-pressure sales, but honesty.  Our goal is not always to get the job, but to educate the community and provide honest answers and real solutions.
