I recently received a dilemma from a Black Queen. Her performance in her role has been 10/10. She has maintained a 'Feedback Folder' which supports her overall performance. She has achieved all objectives to a high standard and continues to grow within the organisation. Within her performance review documentation, her line manager sought to use the Performance review document to 'humble her'. Her Line Manager added false, misleading, and detrimental feedback in her performance review document and when challenged has been bullying our fellow Black Queen to sign the document and therefore effectively agreed with the information knowing it is untrue.  When challenged she was told 'it isn't a big deal, it isn't serious, and should challenge her within her role.  How can our fellow Black Queen sign a document with false information that will then be kept in her HR file know that the information is untrue and without merit.

In this episode, we discuss the above and also how she has now had to file a grievance complaint. However, this has not been straightforward. Our sis despite my advice was influenced by her trade union rep and has now effectively found herself in a position where she has no leverage, shown her cards too early, she is now effectively is being managed out because she did not manage this situation and found herself conflicted.  In that conflict, she was influenced by other voices and none of those voices centers Black Women.

Let's discuss.

We have all heard of or watched the 'Tinder Swindler' on Netflix. In this episode we discuss it and how we have fallen foul of some degree of swindling or dating deception. We will also discuss how we are swindled, manipulated, and sold a dream by organisations to then find out the glittering website, offices, and meeting rooms hide toxic and problematic workplaces.

In this episode we discuss self-confidence. Being confident in the workplace and navigating imposter syndrome whilst also navigating white-dominated spaces is an extreme sport.

'Self-confidence is an attitude about your skills and abilities. It means you accept and trust yourself and have a sense of control in your life. You know your strengths and weakness well, and have a positive view of yourself. You set realistic expectations and goals, communicate assertively, and can handle criticism.'

12 Apr 2022The Good Person Syndrome01:33:33

Send us a text

Workplaces encourage and push the narrative of the 'good person' not allowing for questions or mistakes but instead placing undue pressure on staff to be perfect without mistake, question,  consideration, or exception.

In this episode, we explore our need to be the 'Good Person' and why we continue to allow this toxic persona to control and govern how we navigate work, especially during the vulnerable times of probation or leading up to promotions and bonuses.

What is clear is we have all suffered from 'The Good Person Syndrome' some of us still do and are buckling under that pressure. Let's discuss.

In this episode, we will also be discussing the latest Employment Tribunal judgment where a 39-year-old White Woman took her employer's Gartner Consultancy to court for Bullying, Victimisation, less favorable treatment, and constructive dismissal. She won part of her claim, one being the use of the derogatory term used by her employer referring to her as a 'Good Girl'. The judge set a precedent and his statement justifying his ruling is a turning point that we all need to be aware of.

19 Apr 2022Thank You For Your Service.01:43:24

I went against everything I believed in and put aside my stance and got my friend a job where I worked. This is not something I have ever done outside of my best friend who I have worked with several times before. - For several months I felt like a hypocrite.

This person was a close friend who had been unemployed for 12 months, she told me this in the middle of the pandemic where the roles in my sector were slower than usual due to covid. I went against my better judgment I went against my personal views on this I couldnt reconcile myself with the fact that I was less of a friend for not knowing my close friend was struggling and unemployed and had been for an entire year when I had the contacts and opportunities to get her a role. I had this overwhelming feeling of guilt. I went against everything I believe in, my better judgment and I took a risk.... it was my biggest regret of 2021. My gut and my stance however strict never fails me. I felt that my emotional need to cover my friend blindsided me. I also allowed myself to be manipulated and rather than asking myself 'why had she beeen unemployed for 12 months in a boyant market pre pandemic'.

Sometimes things happen to remind you why you have taken a stance on a subject or topic, sometimes we are reminded that you have to make difficult decisions which may make you feel bad but there comes a point where you have to give yourself permission to put your mental well being and yourself first.

I recognise in myself the flaws in my character, especially when I feel responsible to save people especially friends. It is a burden brought about from my trauma with my mother, where I needed her to save me, to be there for me to cover me and she did not. She did not afford me the covering needed from her. I also now realise she did not have the capacity or the tools to cover me in the way I needed. I then carried the unresolved issues and burdened myself with wanting to save others. I have discussed this extensively with my therapist and sat in the feelings of feeling betrayed, disappointed and let down. I know where my responsibility sits, I also recognise that this big L is my learning lesson to carry as a reminder that friendship does not extend to trying to save someone, that is not my role. My role as a friend is to be supportive and encourage my friends to save themselves. Being a good friend is not measured by your ability to find a solution sometimes it is ok to support your friend to find the solution for themselves.

I have forgiven myself for the silly decision I made for going against my principals and I am also celebrating the liberation from the burden. I have learned the lessons and hope you can learn from me and do better.

What part of the working world is the worst part?..... I would say the first day would feature in the top 3. Trying to assert yourself without appearing overbearing, not knowing when to speak or if you should, trying to remember people's names, trying to create a good impression..... being seen.

Being a consultant is completely out of my preferred comfort zone having to start again over and over again for each assignment. This has proven to be a much-needed challenge learning to start over, and perform my due diligence taking into account all the previous learning lessons from previous roles. Black Women we are seen they choose not to see us but they soon realise we are here to stay as long as we choose to.

17 May 2022What Brings You Peace? (Part 1)01:31:34

Send us a text

In order to recognise what brings you peace you have to know and understand your non-negotiables.

In the workplaces often white-dominated where we Black Women are often in the minority what does peace look like? Workplaces are often anxiety-driven toxic places so peace is often a myth, but when we are clear on our non-negotiables we must be in a place and position to communicate them even if it means using the system to do so because that in itself is our pursuit of PEACE!

*This episode includes x1 dilemma.

31 May 2022London Boys01:22:31

Send us a text

London Boys applies to those who think it's acceptable to be debating who pays for dates and think they should piggyback on the hard work and sacrifice of women who are building. Such limiting and elementary thinking is relative to the limited dating pool in London. Ladies, it is time to pivot and consider international dating. Open up the location and widen your dating pool.

The only way you can consider your dating options is to consider your dating pool you need to diversify and expand your options which also includes considering dating outside of the UK.

In this episode, we also discuss women who sacrifice their careers, hard work, and business for a relationship or for a man. You can have your own thing without needing to have a man jump on what you have. Remaining independent from a man or relationship is healthy it creates respect, boundaries, and independence. This should be celebrated.

Male fragility is loaded with ego and patriarchy. Women often trade in what they have built for a man/relationship disguised as love, when in fact it's a co-dependency rooted in low self-esteem and lack of respect for the sacrifices you have made to build yourself up.  Black  Women Work twice as hard and navigate work and careers uniquely from our non-Black and white counterparts we know the racist and oppressive structures we as women exist in and navigate through therefore why do some of us forget this in pursuit of love?  Why must love come with the sacrificing of self?  Whilst on the topic we also discuss SteffLonDon and Burna Boy and other celebrities eg Mary J Blige who blurred the lines between work/business and relationships.

07 Jun 2022The Hustle Is Sold Separately01:45:24

Send us a text

In this episode, I challenge you to have agency over your career it requires you to accept that the work structure is created to ensure you rely on your organisations and managers to validate you through promotions and/or bonuses. Having agency over your life and career means you operate and see the world of work as transactional and when a workplace has served in achieving your objectives you move on and build on your career. You do not require permission to do so or operate in guilt via a form of displaced loyalty to an organisation or manager who is committed to keeping you stagnant in a position that only serves them and therefore oppresses your ability to grow and attain success and the financial benefits of that success.

Understanding the work hustle requires you to first understand that the work Hustle Is Sold Separately.

We will also be discussing the Fawcett Report into 'Women of Colour' experiencing racism in the workplace.

In the workplace, I have long accepted that there is no such thing as a perfect job or workplace. Workplaces often thrive in toxicity breeding fear and control. I will always seek balance and peace because no workplace is perfect.

In this episode, I discuss and conclude Florence who decided to attempt to discredit me and called into question my integrity her sole motivation was to abuse her position because she does not like consultants. After a Letter Before Action.....The organisation has agreed on an out-of-court settlement. Our greatest superpower is being underestimated.

As children, we were often not encouraged to use our voice, or have an opinion the old saying of 'Children should be seen but not heard.' This then evolves into being easily manipulated as we second guess ourselves or question the decisions we initially decisively make.

In the working world, we become susceptible to career manipulation this is demonstrated by displaced loyalty to a company that no longer serves you or being talked out of resigning, etc I am labeling this a Code Black!

The passive-aggressive inverted commas in emails create the tension the author intended. The use of inverted commas as a microaggression is used to reinforce one's position and to provoke a response from you.

In this episode, we also discuss my most recent boss reapplying for a role she has been doing for almost 2 years

ACAS gives employees and employers free impartial advice and mediation on workplace disputes, employment rights, and best practices.

ACAS must be used before approaching an employment tribunal. The view is that an employment tribunal must be used as the last resort and therefore ACAS provides a service of mediation to find a compromise in a workplace disputes. In the event that a compromise cannot be found and a Claimant has exhausted a grievance process and therefore not found a resolution through ACAS, a Claimant can take an employment matter to an Employment Tribunal.

In this episode I will be discussing my friend's case which we took to ACAS I managed to negotiate an out-of-court settlement for her of nearly £50k and renegotiated the terms of that settlement which included:

  1. Payment within 7 days
  2. A tax-Free settlement with all tax liability to be fully paid by her employer to HMRC
  3. Payment of 10 therapy sessions
  4. Agreed wording for an employment reference
  5. Letter of retraction and an apology in writing for a false accusation made during the course of her employment.
  6. Payment in lieu of notice to enable her to leave this employment on full pay for 3 months.

We will be using her employment dispute as a case study for this episode.

'The more you have to protect, the weaker you become, thats why everyone and everything around you cant be a liability; - By Dencia

Creating boundaries with your family especially in a culture laced in religion often creates  division and a choice, a choice between your peace and showing up in a culture that will tell you your mental health cannot be more important than your family.  The first daughter especially in the African culture i belong too  comes with a burden of responsibility that you are born into. Your identity  becomes the first born daughter and removes the person and stripes you of you individuality, you show up for your duty a duty your younger siblings then expect.

As we evolve and grow into adulthood the structure of the home that becomes  the foundation is removed and adult siblings now make a choice to forge relationships and a further choice of forging healthy relationships such relationships require boundaries.

In a culture that sees boundaries as disrespectful how can a first born daughter create healthy sibling relationships and remove the duty to enable her to also live in her truth and pursue her peace and what makes her happy?

In this episode I will be discussing why as Black women we accept crumbs instead of an apology that consists of acceptance and accountability. Why as Black Women do we allow those outside of our community to continuously use us and our trauma to make money. Why are we all too willing to see self appointed allies as Messiahs' of social justice.

What is clear is the weaponisation of 'be kind' and mental health to evade accountability. The issue isn’t  where one sticks their foot or their pursuits in the bedroom. It is about racism and the use of racism  by night and the pretence of allieship by day.

We will also be discussing how to protect your job from those seeking to piggy-back on your shoulders to advance their careers.

At the age of 96 The Queen of the United Kingdom passed away, this of course has given rise to topical discussions both on social media and within the workplace. The topic of the British empires role in colonisation is a painful one especially when people tell you how you should feel about the monarchy and how to react to the passing away of the Queen of England. One thing is for sure one cannot discuss the monarchy without being honest about their role in colonisation, slavery and the destruction and interruption of peace in Africa.

This episode should have really been entitled 'A Phased Return' a slight play of words if you understand the context.

What happens in politics usually finds itself in the office including the pricks and false narratives pushed for the success of the corrupt.

In this episode we round up things I have missed whist I have been away. I also share my hypochondriac boss taking credit for my work and removing my signature replacing it as hers and passing it off as her own. This really speaking to her character and the need to develop the 'Art of not giving a F*ck'.

This episode we discuss contract clauses risk and implications of clauses that you should be aware of for both employment and consultancy contracts

08 Nov 2022The Psychological Contract01:29:15

In a society that makes us conscious  of the differences we have, we as Black Women know in the work place we are like moving targets.  But the reality is we often sign a psychological contract where we subconsciously and/or  consciously at a disadvantage to make others feel comfortable. Where do we draw the line and terminate this false belief that our discomfort is the required sacrifice for the benefit of others, others who do not consider us worthy of the freedom to operate freely from the burden of considering everyone else other than ourselves.

20 Dec 2022Quiet Quitting01:47:34

Lets discuss quiet quitting defined as ' the practice of doing little or nothing while being present at ones place if employment'. - I define it as working smarter rather than harder and realigning your wants and expectations by doing the bare minimum delivering and still appearing to be working hard whilst strategically developing and then executing a strategy and exit plan to leave. All whilst appearing to be engaged and present.

We then discuss the contractual landscape with regards to enforcing payment terms whilst contracting/freelancing. What are we doing with non payment/late payment of invoices? Here I give you some tips and pointers that I am currently using to get paid whist avoiding having to to go to small claims court to get what you are owed.

Humility comes with humble pie when they realise that your skill set is not readily available on the market and this then provides you with leverage. Leverage = Power.

We are too grown to not understand and accept that 'princess treatment' is a toxic and dangerous concept. Breeny Lee was dragged on social media for pushing the narrative that if you behave like a 'princess' will and should expect to be treated like one. This doesn't make sense if you don't operate your life like this in reality, that aside women should be packaging themselves operating from a space of independence and mental maturity. We discuss this in this episode and i take it a step further in ask fr us to also consider how we treat ourselves.

Following a interesting conversation at my recent hair dressers it prompted this episode about how we as women package ourselves and the flawed view of labelling men Kings for basic elementary things based of the low value of expectation. You wouldn't clap for a fish for swimming, so why are we elevating someone to a King who has no kingdom?

This episode contains x1 dilemma that demonstrates how we Black Women are winners but winning and wanting to win is a choice we cannot allow our identity to be tied into work or what society dictates we have to find peace in developing a self of sense, independence and confidence in our choices.

19 Apr 2023Black Women Deserve To Be Loved In Public (PT1)00:53:55

Send us a text

A recent interview with Esther Falana on Good Morning Britain sparked debate regarding being over 35 years old being too old to be a mother/start a family. This was a topic not covered with care and depth and proved reckless especially with the back handed age shaming without exploring this layered topic to provide a view that was both informative and factual.

Black Women in the world of work are both financially and from a position perspective significantly disadvantaged and spend more time climbing the career ladder this leads to career being the main focus and family life coming later. This also includes the consideration that society does not facilitate the socio-economic means to support family and motherhood/patenthood.

In this episode which is two part, I will be providing depth to this topic including the medical consideration and recommendation for us to check our ovarian health to remove the societal pressures in feeling that we are running out of time.  - Lets discuss.

Following on from a previous episode 'Black Women Deserve To Be Loved In Public (PT1)'  https://www.buzzsprout.com/761990/12678087 (Part 2 coming soon)

If this episode is now live it means I have given birth. Yes I am now a mother @ 38. I live by what I teach. Despite being shamed about not having children and not knowing myself if  I wanted Children, I had to do a lot of work to get to this point. This includes therapy, Financial literacy/education, exploring my ovarian health and working through my mother daughter trauma which continues to be something I have to work on because going no contact  has been a challenge but key to my mental health and I know that now. I have no clue what I am doing but what I do know is I have done the work and continue to do so. Everyone ignores mental health but it is a key factor in deciding whether to bring life into the world, until you work through your trauma how are you able to ensure you are not complicit in continuing the cycle of generational trauma?

Despite what society and culture has said I chose to focus on developing my career to enable me to create the life for my child that he/she deserves.  In doing so I have also been able to develop my career to a stage that I have felt confident and comfortable to take time out to balance motherhood.

The last 9 months has also consisted of mourning my old life where I was the sole focus. There is now a required balance of Career & Motherhood.

Betrayal - I've learnt that the greatest betrayal and need to then forgive is towards ourselves. Not trusting our instincts and second guessing ourselves are all forms of self betrayal. That job interview that you attend  and deep down you know something isn't right but you still accept the role. Or you know its time to leave a role for your own development or mental healthy but you stay out of loyalty for a company that is not loyal to you, despite your better judgement you stay only for them to make you redundant a few months later. Often the interest we pay in these circumstances is reduced self confidence and self esteem which then has a domino effect on our career choices and ultimately how we navigate our careers.

Society has attempted to condition us to believe we are undeserving, and through this we begin the road of self doubt. We question our decisions and even at times question if we are deserving of the fruits of our hard work. Can you see the vicious cycle of self betrayal?

With all this as a considered back drop, what then when we encounter betrayal from others. I have learnt a very important lesson that forgiveness starts with SELF.  Either not trust myself or for trying to see the good when the ancestors showed me that something was not right. When betrayal comes from family this is indeed the toughest pill to swallow. How can people you share memories, blood and lineage with betray you? Even family who are not blood but considered family. How do you move past that betrayal?

Whilst I struggle with forgiveness I have learnt that forgiveness of others does not mean re-admittance into my life or even that I need to share that forgiveness. Forgiveness releases you, and whilst I am on this journey its comforting to know what the true meaning of forgiveness is.

In this episode I also discuss late payment interest charges on business invoices. The CEO of an agency attempted to gaslight and intimidate me out of pursuing late payment interest on an invoice which was 4 days late.  He sought to question my reasoning and decided to then cause me self doubt in my legitimate claim all whilst the invoice remained unpaid then called me aggressive for asserting my position . All his attempts failed.

Audacity is at an all time high but we trust ourselves and our decisions because when we trust ourselves and our decision making we reaffirm our trust and confidence in ourselves.

Let me share with you what happened and the learning lessons.

I am going to preface every episode by saying Baby Brain is real.

Having recently given birth I can confirm and agree that now experiencing Baby Brain first hand that it is defined as ….’a state of impaired memory, concentration, or mental agility supposedly experienced by women during pregnancy or after giving birth.  The condition of forgetting things and not being able to think clearly that pregnant women or women who have given birth are often said to experience: Baby Brain makes you feel so silly when you forget the most basic things.’

Curtis James Jackson III, known professionally as 50 Cent, is a renowned rapper and entrepreneur who has successfully transitioned from the music industry to becoming a prominent business figure. His journey from a rapper to a multifaceted businessman has been widely acknowledged and serves as an inspiring example of leveraging personal branding, business acumen, and strategic investments for long-term success.

One of the people I look up too, admire and respect is 50 Cent. After reading his book ‘Hustle Harder, Hustle Smarter’ -  I completely understood how he operates in business and his career. I developed a respect for him because of his transparency understanding of his self worth, honesty about his mistakes and how he started life that explain why and where he is now.

Notably 50 Cent is the mastermind behind:
Ghost
PowerBook I
PowerBook II
BMF
Raising Kanan
For Life

His creative differences with TV Network Starz saw 50 Cent recognise his worth and unwilling to compromise on his creative direction of his show he reached his walk away point.

In this episode I also share an anonymous dilemma/ life lesson regarding financial abuse.

What happens in politics often happens in life. Despite the disgraceful  leadership filled with 'alleged' dishonesty Boris Johnson has now allegedly signed a £1M deal with the Daily Mail  as a  columnist. It surpasses understanding how anyone would think that he would have anything worth while to write about outside of politics, but the questions surrounding how he mis-managed covid as Tory Leader and Prime Minister continues.

This is the same man who ensured that his hair dresser would be included in the honours list. During covid and the press conferences Boris often looked like he was dragged through the bush backwards his personal appearance often reflecting the chaos of covid, most people were shocked that Boris even had a hairdresser. It just goes to show that he does not fear consequences he stands behind his privilege to protect him and now having been exposed as a dishonest former Prime Minister many will have to suffer him again as he takes up his new post as Daily Mail Columnist.

In this episode we will also be discuss maximising your earning potential through contracting. Toya Talks is not just for people in the corporate world, but is for anyone in the WORKING WORLD. Following on from the previous episode ' I like Money' I needed to do this episode. We are in a cost of living crisis which I believe is a fancy way of saying 'recession'. Others would define it as...

'a situation where the cost of basic necessities and everyday expenses rises significantly, outpacing the income and financial resources of individuals or households. It means that the cost of essential goods and services, such as housing, food, healthcare, education, transportation, and utilities, is increasing at a faster rate than people's wages or income growth. This imbalance can result in financial hardship and economic instability for individuals and families, as they struggle to afford the basic necessities of life. A cost of living crisis can have wide-ranging impacts on society, including increased poverty rates, decreased standards of living, and heightened inequality. It often necessitates discussions and actions aimed at addressing the root causes of rising costs and finding ways to improve affordability and financial well-being for individuals and communities.'

In a cost of living crisis even more so you have to understand and know how to pivot including pivoting from contracting to perm as a temporary measure as a response if needed.

The above also leads me to discuss the collapse of Credit Suisse. In this episode, we delve into the recent collapse of Credit Suisse, one of the world's leading financial institutions, and explore the valuable lessons to be learned from the perspective of an employee. We examine the implications of such a collapse on job security and the significance of understanding company benefits in times of organisational turmoil.

We begin by providing an overview of the events leading up to the collapse of Credit Suisse, including the factors contributing to its downfall. From risky investments and mismanagement to regulatory issues and reputational damage.

Next, we shift our focus to the employee's viewpoint and discuss the implications of an organisational collapse on job security. We explore the challenges faced by employees when a company faces financial ruin, such as potential layoffs, salary cuts, and loss of benefits. We emphasize the importance of staying informed about one's employment contract, severance packages, and any legal protections available.

Furthermore, we analyse the concept of company benefits and their true meaning during times of crisis. We explain how employees can ensure a comprehensive understanding of their benefits, such as retirement plans, health insurance, stock options, and bonuses, and how to evaluate their value when an organization collapses. Additionally, we provide insights on diversifying investments and safeguarding personal finances to mitigate the impact of such unforeseen events.

Lastly, we explore how individuals can prepare themselves professionally and financially for such occurrences. We discuss the significance of maintaining a diverse skill set, staying updated with industry trends.

  1. Signs a company are in trouble
  2. How can employees protect themselves from job losses
  3. Future Career Planning
  4. Company benefits and what they actually mean and even more so when a company is bought or collapses.

The workplace has never been a safe place and is not a safe space for Black Women. Being pregnant places women in a vulnerable position, your hormones are raging, your body is changing and you are growing a whole human. Many of us are also managing underlying health conditions too. In spaces where Black Women are not afforded fragility I never felt safe to share with employers  or colleagues that I was pregnant. I held down two contracts whilst pregnant and did not disclose my pregnancy. I attended all my hospital and midwife appointments and for 9 months grew a whole child whilst working remotely and never having to share my pregnancy. It felt safer to say nothing.  Whilst I recognise this is not possible for all my fellow Black Women, in this episode i share why I made this decision and how I managed to navigate my pregnancy and maintain my privacy whilst still stacking for my maternity leave.

Number 10 Downing St is the HQ. For us mere mortals it represents organisations we work for. Suella Braverman is an employee. The sacking of Braverman is more than an angry boss letting go of an employee this is the dynamics of a manager, CEO, Line Manager and HR not recruiting well and then dealing with the fall out of a rogue employee.

In this episode we delve deeper and draw learnings for our own strategic ventures in the world of work.

Let me be clear, I do not believe democracy exists in this country but this country purports to be democratic. When you seek to control the narrative there is no freedom of speech, when you dictate how a peaceful March should be done you erode democracy when you attempt to remove freedoms to push a personal agenda or narrative you erode democracy. I do not believe true democracy exists in this country.

31 Dec 2023End of Year Wrap Up 202301:06:27

Send us a text

As the year comes to a close, I find myself in a poignant reflection of the personal and societal transformations that have left an indelible mark on 2023. The landscape of the UK has been one of tumultuous change, from royal family disclosures to political upheaval and an economic maelstrom that has held our leaders' feet to the fire. Yet, amid this national backdrop, my journey into motherhood has been the most transformative of all, fraught with joys, trials, and the task of breaking generational curses.

Embracing the duality of motherhood, I bare the raw and unfiltered truths of parenting in the digital age. The metaphor of my neglected toenails becomes a symbol of the relentless pace of life with a child, challenging the glittering façades of social media's portrayal of motherhood. Through candid tales and personal anecdotes, this episode weaves together the essence of nurturing a child while grappling with societal pressures, the shadow of past traumas, and the importance of self-care.

As we bid farewell to a year of profound love and gratitude, the discussion turns to the practicalities of negotiating life's financial and professional hurdles. This episode doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of navigating a financial crisis or the art of negotiation with employers, as I recount tales of securing work against the odds and managing family budgets with a frugal touch. Join me as I share insights into the evolution of remote work, the empowerment of saving, and the criticality of proactive career management. It's been a year of immense challenges, but through it, we've discovered the strength we hold and the hope that guides us into the unknowns of the future.

I've always believed that embracing your true self is a rebellious act of self-love, especially when the world tries to carve you into something you're not. This belief echoes through today’s conversation, sparked by Laura Matsu's powerful reflections on self-acceptance. I delve into the pivotal updates in UK employment law, specifically the new flexible working legislation. It's essential intel for every working woman in the UK.

The energy shifts as we navigate the delicate dance of professional friendships, taking cues from the Receipts Podcast's Tolly, Audrey, and Milena. On top of that, the Employment Relations Flexible Working Act 2023 brings fresh challenges and opportunities. I'll guide you through initiating those crucial flexible working conversations during job interviews, ensuring your mental well-being isn't left at the office door.

Wrapping up, we confront the frustration of fighting for one's worth in spaces that tend to sideline our voices and contributions. I stand with Taraji P. From the viral tales of Ressa Tessa on TikTok to the tumultuous life lessons from the Wendy Williams documentary, we take an unflinching look at the importance of recognising red flags and holding true to our values in the quest for love and fulfilment.

Navigating the dating world can often feel like a high stakes game where knowing oneself is both the board and the prize. This episode is a candid reflection on the societal pressures to conform, the complexities of culture and societies view on relationships, and the mental health repercussions of a lonely heart's decisions. We analyse Ressa Tessa's viral mini-series as a cautionary tale, and I share my personal experiences to underscore the perils of compromising happiness to satisfy external expectations. Through these poignant stories, we grasp the profound impact our choices have on our lives and the quiet strength it takes to start again.

As I advocate for the power of transparency and the necessity of setting boundaries, especially in the realm of social media, we also dive into the emotional and legal entanglements that can arise from a lack of financial clarity in relationships. Portia Williams-Gubordia's alleged filing for divorce serves as a stark reminder to us all to remain informed, and don't shy away from the crucial conversations.

The world can be unkind, and for Black Women, the sting of racism and microaggressions is a harsh reality. I share a potent blend of personal stories and societal critique, focusing on my own experience at a swim school that became a battleground for parental rights and racial tensions. The episode also casts a lens on the political landscape, dissecting the Labour Party's response to bigotry and the media's role in shaping public perception. Through this narrative, we uncover the vital importance of speaking out, standing firm, and the power of allies in the struggle against discrimination.

As we navigate the undulating terrain of professional and personal growth, the stories of those like Diane Abbott and Raye serve as beacons of resilience and self-belief. In this episode, I examine the ways Black Women can equip themselves with expertise and confidence to confront workplace challenges, and I celebrate the triumphs of those who bet on themselves and won. To all my listeners, your unwavering support is the wind beneath the wings of the Toyah Talks podcast, and together, we'll continue to uplift each other and champion our collective well-being.

We explore the influential role of Black women in politics, drawing parallels between the US and the UK. We reflect on the groundbreaking impact of leaders like Barack Obama and Kamala Harris on political diversity and leadership. Despite these strides, the absence of a Black Prime Minister in the UK remains striking. We delve into Kamala Harris's career, examining her tenure as Attorney General and the criticisms she has faced. This segment underscores the ongoing challenges and triumphs of Black women in political spheres, highlighting the persistent need for systemic change and recognition.

Our conversation addresses the overqualification phenomenon experienced by Black women in the workplace. We discuss the systemic barriers that necessitate extensive qualifications for Black women to even be considered for roles often occupied by less-qualified individuals due to white privilege. Personal stories and societal conditioning illustrate these issues, and we also touch on the ethical implications of fundraising decisions, such as the GoFundMe campaign for Brendan Nwachibe. Join us as we navigate these complex topics, offering insights on career growth, identity, and allyship while fostering a platform for underrepresented voices.

Rethinking Networking and Inclusivity in Tech Events

Networking within the tech industry, especially at events targeted at the Black community, often feels more like a social affair than a professional gathering. We voice our skepticism about the effectiveness of these events and advocate for more inclusive and meaningful opportunities that align with the true professional aspirations of attendees. Highlighting the lack of Black representation in senior leadership, we emphasize the need for networking events that facilitate real connections with decision-makers. Additionally, we share our experiences with "Talks With Ash" on Clubhouse, underscoring the importance of respect and relatability in professional settings.

Financial struggles in the UK, from rising transportation costs, are taking a toll on many. We explore the burdens of the tax system, the challenges of raising a child, and the necessity of financial education often learned through modern platforms. Negotiating salary and maintaining privacy boundaries during job applications are crucial topics we address, offering advice on how to navigate these tricky waters.

21 Jan 2025The Corporations are showing their COLORS01:13:01

Send us a text

Staring down the tangled web of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in powerhouse corporations like Microsoft, McDonald's, Ford, and Meta, we make a bold claim: Corporate DEI initiatives often amount to little more than hollow gestures, failing to make meaningful change. We dissect the aftermath of George Floyd's murder, scrutinising how it prompted a wave of DEI pledges that often fall short of translating into actionable progress. Through personal narratives and candid analysis, we highlight the systemic barriers Black women encounter in predominantly white industries, arguing for the necessity of legal mandates and rigorous reporting to ensure DEI efforts are more than just lip service.

Navigating the multifaceted dynamics of DEI, we touch on compelling examples from popular culture, such as the casting of "Wicked," to explore representation and tokenism. The UK's paradox of relying on immigrant contributions while marginalising its diverse populace adds another layer to our discussion. We also delve into the world of content creation, sharing my journey with social media platforms like TikTok, where authentic engagement has been more rewarding than on traditional venues. These stories are woven with insights on personal agency, emphasising the limitations of corporate loyalty to DEI principles.

We tackle the ongoing saga of TikTok's legal challenges in the U.S., focusing on the interplay between freedom of expression and national security. The episode also bravely explores workplace racism and implicit bias, with personal experiences that shine a light on the discomfort and obstacles faced by Black women. Through accounts of employment tribunal battles and the art of self-advocacy, we emphasize resilience and strategic action against discrimination. Sharing the importance of escapism and safe spaces, we celebrate the strength and solidarity of Black Women, striving together to navigate professional challenges while maintaining our identity and dignity.

11 Mar 2025The Glass Cliff01:26:05

Send us a text

The insidious nature of the glass cliff phenomenon stands as a stark reality for Black women in professional spaces, creating a precarious balancing act between opportunity and setup. While many understand the concept of the glass ceiling, fewer recognize how Black women are strategically positioned at the edge of organizational precipices, handed leadership roles specifically during times of crisis when the probability of failure looms large.

This episode dissects how organizations conveniently embrace diversity when facing turbulence—appointing Black women to firefight situations they didn't create, with inadequate resources and impossible timelines. Through compelling examples like Kemi Badenoch's leadership of the struggling Conservative Party and Kamala Harris's eleventh-hour presidential candidacy, we examine the calculated pattern that reinforces harmful stereotypes when inevitable challenges arise.

Beyond career implications, we explore the geopolitical landscape of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, examining how NATO expansion, natural gas pipelines, and global politics affect everyday taxpayers. This connects to our central theme by highlighting how power structures function on both micro and macro levels. The conversation extends to corporate developments at Deloitte and Goldman Sachs, alongside Pat McGrath's groundbreaking appointment at Louis Vuitton—demonstrating both challenges and breakthroughs for Black representation.

Remember that true progress isn't measured by token appointments during crises but by equitable opportunities across all conditions. As you navigate your professional journey, recognise these patterns and position yourself strategically.

True representation means Black Women being promoted in all circumstances, not just when an organisation needs saving. Be the architect of your own career and recognise when you're being set up to fail.

Your career deserves architecture that builds toward sustainable success rather than precarious positioning at the edge of someone else's crisis. Take time to rest, as we acknowledge the National Day of Rest for Black Women, because the path to authentic leadership begins with caring for yourself.

31 Dec 2019You Can't Put Black Women In The Corner00:36:06

Send us a text

Asserting yourself as a black women is often perceived as aggression. This in-turn puts us off asserting ourselves and builds up resentment towards our employers. I am an advocate of using the governance process and strategically understanding how to communicate with Human Resources and senior management. I have been sworn at, had things thrown at me, ignored, humiliated and in every situation I have known that a legitimate display of anger could change the narrative. Instead of focusing on the situation where we have been wronged and treated badly, the focus then turns to our reaction. Knowing this I have developed my superpower in being a black woman. Weaponising our tears is never an option for us,  the stereotype of 'angry black woman' is the narrative developed by those who use this to oppress black woman. You cannot put black women in the corner.

14 Jan 2020Dear Black Women.... Your Manager Is Not The Key To Your Success.00:22:32

Send us a text

In my younger years I believed the key to my success in the workplace was my line manager. A string of road blocks, incompetent managers and a large dose of office politics soon made me realise that success is a choice and the choice sits with me. Too much responsibility is placed on our managers when in fact a manager owes you nothing. We are often raised with the mindset to be grateful to have a job but this shouldn't then make us so grateful that we talk ourselves out of growing and developing in an organisation, or in our careers. The responsibility of progression, growth and success is yours. Managers manage a department they do not manage your career that's your responsibility.

07 Jan 2020Sticks and Stones00:47:48

Send us a text

Bullying in the work place is often masqueraded as banter or disguised in the all too familiar quote of 'you're being sensitive'. Many experience bullying in the workplace and often not know what to do and how to deal with it. As a black women the stereotypes that continues to be placed on us often serves as a deterrent in preventing us from speaking up when faced with bullying in the workplace. ITV's recent 3 part episode 'Sticks and Stones' follows a black man, Sales Associate Thomas Benson who is bullied at work. As the bullying intensifies we watch Thomas deteriorate and we see how the bullying effects his mental health, his home life and of course his work life.

Watching 'Sticks and Stones' was uncomfortable. In the early stages of my career I was bullied by colleagues, management and in different organisations. As i became more senior the bullying was overt but was still effective in crushing my confidence and self-esteem. As I began to understand the social aspects of work and grow as a person I very quickly understood the need to set boundaries with my colleagues and how to then deal with and speak up when I was bullied or treated unfairly. Often the bullying was motivated by the colour of my skin. Irrespective of how black women assert themselves, in comparison to our white counterparts we will be considered as aggressive or even the aggressor, however I refuse to accept this as a deterrent from speaking up. There are different ways of asserting yourself and understanding how to use the office politics, and workplace rules/regulations, and grievance procedure has made asserting myself at work easier. We are use to being the minority in the workplace and that and sometimes is uncomfortable in itself so if asserting ones self means we will have to be uncomfortable while doing so, then its' a feeling we are already use too. In this Episode I discuss workplace bullying advise on how to deal with bullying at work and also I share a recent example of an ex-colleague who is being bullied at work.

21 Jan 2020Gracies Hair - Do Black Women Have A Social Responsibility To Explain Natural Hair In the Workplace?00:45:43

Send us a text

Most of us watched the video recently circulating on social media of a young lady Gracie looking stunning at work with her beautiful natural afro hair. In the video we saw her white colleagues touching prodding ummming and arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring fascinated about her natural hair admitting they had never seen natural hair on a black woman before. What was more uncomfortable is Gracies facial expressions. It was undeniable that she looked uncomfortable. So many questions. Did they ask permission before touching her hair? If so did she say yes? If she said yes did she feel under pressure to say yes?

The video went viral. Watching this video several times and reading the reactions of fellow black women it caused me to step back and unpack my hair choices when going to work, including how I wear my hair to interviews etc. In this Episode I share with you my hair choices for work and why. I will also be sharing my views on the Gracie video and answer the question 'Do Black Women Have A Social Responsibility To Explain Natural Hair In the Workplace?;

28 Jan 2020From Office Pet to Office Threat (#TravellingToWorkWhilstBlack)00:46:29

Send us a text

Travelling to work via public transport is a sport and increasingly becoming a contact sport. The aggression encountered on the way to and from work are often laced with undertones of racism and sexism. This then sets the tone for ones work day.

I was recently sent an article by Erika Stallings 'When Black Women Go From Office Pet to Office Threat'. This is something we as black women encounter in the office when we are ambitious and wanting to progress, it's at this point we go from office pet to office threat. We are then met with tension, microaggression, racism the list goes on. I use this episode to explain and address 'Office pet to office threat' and provide some practical solutions, drawing upon my own experiences of this in the workplace.

There is always a question around sisterhoods in the workplace and how effective are allegiances and alliances with people in the office that look like you. In this episode I explore allegiances & alliances, when they go wrong and exploring the root of some of the unhealthy competition between black women.

Setting boundaries in the work place is a common theme in my episodes. In this episode I use a recent example of a colleague who decided not to set any boundaries at work and as a result she welcomed an onslaught of disrespect which resulted in her contract being terminated with immediate effect.

As black working women we must set boundaries in life and in the office, this is how we protect our space, our mental health and maintain our respect.

24 Mar 2020Walking In The 'Career' Wilderness00:47:19

Send us a text

It's ok to not have it together and still be trying to figure out what path you want to take. Some people you talk to study something and then end up working in another, others have known from day dot what they have wanted to do.

It's important to appreciate that everyone is walking their own path and it's ok to be confused or uncertain about your career path. Not everyone has it together ,often people  mask the wilderness they are walking in. Walking in the career wilderness, being unsure, confused or stumbling into a career crossroad is all part of your journey in discovering your purpose,

"I need to see my own beauty and to continue to be reminded that I am enough, that I am worthy of love without effort, that I am beautiful, that the texture of my hair and that the shape of my curves, the size of my lips, the colour of my skin, and the feelings that I have are all worthy and okay." 27 Apr 2020Dyslexia - I Am A Successful Black Professional With A Learning Disability.00:57:57

Send us a text

Having a learning disability is not a measure of intelligence and too often I see people associate the two with each other.

I am a black woman with a learning disability who has navigated the workplace successfully. It has not been without its challenges.

This week we discuss managing learning disabilities in the workplace and some of the feelings I have had to unpack to be able to manage my dyslexia. I am proud of my journey but, it is important we understand how learning disabilities manifest itself in the workplace and how one manages this in the pursuit of career success.
