Facebook locks a bunch of users out of their accounts for not turning on Facebook Protect.  The problem was that Facebook’s email notification looked like a phishing scam which was largely ignored.

The global chip shortage is getting real and it's getting worse.  First it was graphic cards that became impossible to buy.  Now some SUVs are shipping without the chips that control seat warmers.

The toy company that first created transformers is now working on a moon rover, and yes, it actually transforms.

And, is the digital divide literally killing us?  Studies show a link between internet access and Covid-19 deaths.

Elon Musk and Twitter had a heck of a week.  Musk buys 9.2% of the stock becoming the biggest shareholder, is offered a seat on the board, but turns it down. 

Twitter also announces that it is adding an “Edit” button to the platform.  They’ve been working on it for over a year and the feature will first come to Twitter Blue subscribers.

Dall.E is a neural network AI that can create images from concepts expressed in natural language.  You tell it what to draw, it draws it, and it is actually pretty good at it.

And we interview Afua Bruce, Adjunct Faculty at the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and author of the book “The Tech That Comes Next”.

Patreon creates the new “Pull Up” incubator for creators of color and offers resources, training, and funding for marginalized small business owners.

The recently launched CNN+ streaming service calls it quits barely 3 weeks after its debut. 

And, the EU has passed the Digital Services Act which will force big tech companies to take greater responsibility for the content that appears on their platforms and can fine them up to 6% of annual turnover for non-compliance.

AI used in a Northwestern study of police departments is showing that a small percentage of officers own a disproportionate share of the misconduct.

The “Chip Shortage” is actually making the chip shortage worse because chip manufacturers can’t get the chips they need to make the chips we need.

The Amazon union saga is far from over as it fires managers who “didn’t prevent” the Staten Island warehouse from organizing right as that union’s leader meets with the president and appears in front of Congress.

And the fall of Roe v. Wade could have big effects on Big Tech. We discuss some of the ways tech companies are scrambling to protect employees, end-users, and the massive amounts of data it collects.

And, is Congress finally positioned to do something meaningful on user privacy? A bipartisan draft bill called the American Data Privacy and Protection Act would provide a national standard on what data companies can gather from individuals and how they can use it.

Even with all the positive stories of black women getting into I.T., the pay gap between white men and black women Is actually widening. 

Eminent Future and it is black founder and president Isaac Barnes were recently awarded a $13.4 billion defense contract with the U.S. Airforce and the U.S. Spaceforce.

Google will, soon, start deleting visits to potentially sensitive locations like domestic violence shelters from users' location histories. Search history, however, still remains.

Scammers are using deep fakes to interview and get hired to remote jobs for nefarious reasons. We ponder if this tech, for some folks, could be used to get by the gatekeepers in efforts to really hired.

A robocall loophole that allowed smaller telecom companies to get by STIR/SHAKEN regulations has been closed.

And, the FCC, again, calls for Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their respective app stores. This sparks a great conversation around things creators can do to monetize their content without being completely beholden to social media companies.

30,000 tech workers have lost their jobs through July, but, we still believe Information Technology is, one of, if not the hottest job industries.

Meta and Tik Tok aren’t doing that great with content moderation in the diaspora. The number of tribal languages spoken regionally is problematic for AI detection but they still need to do better.

And people are getting tired of Instagram focusing so much on video. The image-sharing social media platform is trying to turn into Meta’s version of Tik Tok, but, some super high-profile creators aren’t down with the poorly implemented shift.

And the video social media platform Triller wooed Black creators with the promise of monthly payments and equity in the company, but, slow payments and no payments, according to program participants have been a problem since the program's inception.

Election misinformation safeguards in social media work fairly well unless the election lies come in foreign languages.

Many of last week’s Twitter rumors have come to pass. Twitter did lay off nearly half of its employees hours before asking some of them to come back. Twitter Blue actually cost $8, not $20, but it’s been postponed until after the election. And Elon Musk is concerned that advertisers leaving the platform is an assault on free speech.

And Meta made some big bets on the Metaverse and we ponder if the bets were the right ones, or if they are just several years too soon.

The FTX crypto exchange bankruptcy could setback cryptocurrency in general for years and usher in traditional finance-type regulation.

And, even though the Tech Winter is getting colder with all of these big tech layoffs, the technology industry as a whole is still one of the best and strongest industries to get into.

The August LastPass security breach is way worse than we initially thought. We’re not saying you should leave LastPass, but, we certainly are no longer recommending it.

There are rumors that a foldable iPad could be coming as soon as 2024, but would the price of such a device be cost-prohibitive?

The venture capital scene got substantially worse for Black Founders in 2022. Their companies only received about 1% of the $215.9 billion raised last year, down from 1.3% in 2021.

TikTok employees pick favorites with a “heat” button putting their thumbs on the scale for the content they want to go viral.  Just another reason that creators need to control the distribution of their content and have a relationship with their biggest fans outside of social media platforms.

Samsung held its Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event last Wednesday It unveiled iterations to the Galaxy S 23 line of phones as well as three new Galaxy Book laptops.

And big tech layoffs are reversing trends in diversity. Women and underrepresented communities are being affected by layoffs at a higher rate than their peers.

This year, an anti-Tesla full self-driving ad aired in several markets during the Superbowl. The Dawn Project spent $598,000 on the 30-second spot, but, we aren’t certain what the motivation was.

In Google’s official introduction of Bard, its’ ChatGPT-like large language model AI, the search giant published false information in an ad causing Google’s stock to drop nearly 10%. 

It turns out that reinstating previously banned Twitter accounts that violated Twitter’s guidelines could be quite lucrative.

And AI-generated porn is bad for women, and, also, water is wet.

Walmart is closing three tech hubs, asking employees to relocate, and requiring them to come into the office at least twice a week.

Screen time, like video games, may not have the adverse effects on children’s development once thought.  What is going on at home in addition to screen time is an important indicator.

And, The State of Black Professionals in Tech report is out.  It turns out that companies that are more diverse make more money.

The August 2022 LastPass breach just keeps getting worse and worse. It turns out that a developer with “literal” keys to the kingdom was hacked on his home computer which, ultimately, lead to a series of unfortunate events.

The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee voted to give the President the power to ban TikTok, but, civil liberties and digital rights groups argue that such a ban would violate users’ First Amendment rights.

TikTok is implementing 60 minutes of screen time on all teen’s accounts by default, but, we aren’t so sure that this measure will do much to curb time spent on the platform.

And bias and racial inequality show up in ed tech just like it does in technology in general.

Things just keep getting worse for Twitter as the social media giant issued a copyright takedown notice to GitHub after finding out parts of its source code had been posted online for months.

And Congress seems to be unified and serious about banning TikTok in the United States.

Rumor has it that Sony is working on a new handheld PlayStation built for remote play. The “Q Lite” is designed to stream games over the internet from a PlayStation 5.

Walmart plans to build a nationwide EV charging network at thousands of stores. It’s a smart move that would make charging up convenient while customers shop.

Tesla is facing a class-action lawsuit because employees are sharing sensitive images and videos taken by the car’s cameras around the company on an internal messaging system.

And Apple Find My has been erroneously directing people to the same man’s house since 2018.

There is no way to sugarcoat it.  Google employees think Bard is trash and you simply can’t trust it even if its tongue came notarized.

Meta will soon start doling out payments from the $725 million Cambridge Analytica settlement where it sold data on 87 million Facebook users.

The SCOTUS will decide if public officials blocking users on social media is an affront to free speech rights.

And WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and other companies are worried that the UK’s Online Safety Bill could undermine end-to-end encryption.

Apple won an appeals court ruling against Epic, but, the maker of Fortnite and other popular games kind of won as well.

And, although Netflix is officially ending free password sharing, there are still ways to get around signing up for your own account, if you’re really determined to.

Elon Musk has named a new CEO to take the helm at Twitter. Linda Yaccarino, a.k.a. The Velvet Hammer, is expected to officially move into the role in within the next 6 weeks.

A Snapchat influencer launches an AI-powered 'virtual girlfriend' to help 'cure loneliness'.

And the Godfather of AI offers a dire warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence.

DoorDash is facing a lawsuit claiming the food delivery service charges iPhone users more for identical deliveries than Android users.

Google Photos, after misidentifying Black men as Gorillas back in 2015, disabled the ability to categorize apes, and 8 years later, still hasn’t turned the ability back on.

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act which frees companies from liability due to user-generated content on their platforms, kinda sorta got tested in the Supreme Court last week.

And, just when you thought your data was safe from the state unless it gets a warrant compelling companies to hand it over, the authorities can just buy it from data brokers.

In episode 74 we were joined by the founder and managing partner of RareBreed Ventures, Mac Conwell. We talked about the run on and ultimate failure of Silicon Valley bank, what actually happened, and how bad it could have been if the government didn’t step in.

We also talked about the ICAN Act, why Mac was called to testify in front of Congress about it, and how modifying the stipulations for what it takes to be a venture capitalist could be good for founders of color.

And lastly, we talked about Mac’s journey to becoming a VC and why he focuses on business outside of Massachusetts, New York, and California.

Many people think the price of Electric Vehicles is the biggest obstacle holding them back from switching to EVs, but, the availability of working charging stations is also a big concern.

Thousands of Reditt communities went dark for 48 hours in protest over Reddit’s new API pricing model.  The question-and-answer giant will begin charging 2.4 cents per 1000 API calls in July.

WhatsApp's new Channels feature may allow the world's largest messaging platform to dip its toe into social media waters but the one-way broadcast feature isn’t ready to replace Twitter just yet.

And, is social media to blame for the Kia Boys' wave of easily stolen automobiles?

Timnit Gebru, co-founder of Black in AI, advocate for diversity in technology, and founder of the DAIR, believes that we should have some type of government oversight for Artificial intelligence.

The European Parliament, a main legislative branch of the European Union, passed a draft law known as the A.I. Act, which would put new restrictions on what are seen as the technology’s riskiest uses.

AIs trained on other AI output will start producing junk within a few generations according to researchers so maybe the solution to the AI apocalypse is waiting it out.

If you’ve accidentally signed up for or tried to cancel an Amazon Prime account you’d understand exactly why the FTC is suing Amazon for deceptive practices.

And there appears to be an inverse relationship between increased technology and decreased quality in automobiles.

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nedalla, would love to end exclusive titles on gaming consoles, but, admits that the market leader, Sony, has set the marketplace for the industry.

Twitter imposed rate limits over the weekend supposedly to "address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, but, many believe this move will drive away more users and more advertisers.

Google’s new privacy policy indicates the search giant wants to scrape all your data for use with its A.I. Not just all Google data. Like, literally, all your data on the internet.

The Actor’s union, SAG-AFTRA, joined its sister union the Writer’s Guild of America in going on strike. Both unions list demands for A.I. protections as significant reasons for shutting down movie and television production.

Is NPC live streaming the next thing or just a fad? Whatever the case TikTok sensation PinkyDoll is capitalizing on talking like a robot will popping popcorn one kernel at a time.

And is using facial recognition for entrance into a gas station food mart done all in the name of security, or, surveillance?

Nearly 200 school systems are suing the parent companies of Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok in a class-action lawsuit over alleged harms to students via their social media platforms.

Several streaming services including Netflix, YouTube Premium, Spotify, and Youtube Music recently told consumers that “Yesterday’s price is not today’s price.

Black Tech Week in Cincinnati took place last week and one of the more interesting presentations was a rap battle between real rappers and A.I.

And Twitter decided to change its logo from the little blue bird to the letter X.

And we spotlight Elise Smith and the startup she cofounded Praxis Labs and dive into a deeper discussion about tokenizing Black female-led startups for the money they receive.

And Return to Office seems to thing for most companies. We are seeing more and more organizations institute ROT policies and productivity data, at least appears, to be supporting their case.

Google announces Project Elevate Black Voices, a partnership with Howard University to improve the technology used in Automatic Speech Recognition.

A Family sues Google alleging its Maps app led a father to drive off a collapsed bridge to his death after being notified numerous times that the bridge had been out for nearly 10 years.

Tinder launches a new $500 per month Tinder Select Tier to less than 1% of the dating platform's most active users.

TikTok is being sued by two Black employees who claim the company has a practice of downplaying complaints of racial discrimination and then retaliating against people who speak out.

iPhone 15 overheating issues have been widely reported, but, Apple is stating that the problem is not with hardware and lies with apps like Uber and Instagram.

The Forbes Top Creators 2023 list is out and we discuss who made the list, why they made the list, and why so few African American women are on the list.

After 25 years, Netflix’s DVD delivery service has come to an end.  This is one case where we don’t think a tech company killed something too soon.

And an appeals court paused Atlanta-based Fearless Fund from awarding Black female-led businesses which only receive 0.39% of venture capital funds $20,000 grants while a conservative group sues it alleging racial discrimination.
