19 Sep 2024S1E113: How a savvy Asean has helped prevent wars in region: Kishore Mahbubani00:23:22

The seasoned Singapore diplomat is bullish on India and Asean but says the US should not be underestimated.

Synopsis: Every third and fourth Friday of the month, The Straits Times' global contributor Nirmal Ghosh shines a light on Asian perspectives of global and Asian issues with expert guests.

Veteran Singapore diplomat Kishore Mahbubani, never shy about sharing his views, is bullish on India and Asean, believes China will not invade Taiwan unless the island declares independence - and warns that no one should underestimate America.

In this episode, Mr Mahbubani says Europe should also revise its notions of being a global economic powerhouse, and the United Kingdom needs to give up its seat on the UN Security Council so India can take it.

Asean has been successful as a regional organisation in preventing Brexit-style breakaways as well as wars in the region - and by 2030 its combined economy will be bigger than Japan’s, Mr Mahbubani contends.

Pressure on China will grow regardless of who occupies the White House after America’s presidential election. In terms of tactics, Kamala Harris would be predictable, but Donald Trump would not.

Mr Mahbubani, currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore, is among other things former Singapore Ambassador to the UN, former Permanent Secretary at Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He has just published a new book titled Living The Asian Century: An Undiplomatic Memoir."

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:54 Three geopolitical geniuses - Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Keng Swee, and S. Rajaratnam

5:32 South-east Asia has an enormous agency; Asean will be bigger than Japan by 2030

8:46 "I am extremely bullish about the prospects of India," says Kishore Mahbubani

11:11 Chinese and Indian inventors are responsible for 20% of all US patents

15:04 Wars are draining

16:59 Near-universal consensus in Washington DC that the US has about 10 years to stop China from becoming No.1

18:44 You can’t predict what Donald Trump is going to do

06 Aug 2023S1E104: Putting people at the centre of the plastic waste crisis00:37:02

Plastic's risks to the environment and human health far outweigh the benefits.

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Bans on single-use plastics are essential, experts say. Nations are also negotiating a global plastic pollution treaty to try to bring the crisis under control. But more is needed.

In this episode, ST's climate editor David Fogarty hosts Dr Sarah Dunlop, who leads the Plastics & Human Health Research Program at the Minderoo Foundation in Australia. She is also Emeritus Professor, University of Western Australia.

She tells Green Pulse that plastics are an incredible success story and are used to make many things from bottles to carpets to Dreamliner aircraft. And such is the demand for plastics that production has soared in recent decades to more than 450 million tonnes a year and it could reach more than 1 billion tonnes by mid-century.

Yet the majority of plastics ever made still exist – discarded in landfills, or dumped in the environment. And only about 10 percent of plastics are currently recycled.

Add to this the threat from more than 10,000 chemicals added to plastics to make them flexible, flame retardant, different colours and other characteristics. These chemicals leak out into the environment and get inside the human body.

Chemicals associated with plastics have been linked to cancers, miscarriages, hormonal changes, obesity and other serious health impacts that cost billions of dollars a year.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:34 How great is the threat from plastics?

6:58 Singapore recycles 6 per cent of plastics but otherwise produces 1 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, most of which is incinerated; why is recycling plastics a real challenge?

13:10 What is the Minderoo Foundation, and what challenges it tackles

15:50 What are some of the risks from the thousands of toxic chemicals added to plastics?

22:00 Is it possible to urgently design plastics that are less toxic? Solutions to reduce plastic consumption and waste

29:29 “The plastics treaty is a once-in-a-lifetime fantastic opportunity”, says Dr Sarah Dunlop

17 Mar 2025S2E14: Can Asean step up on climate action?00:33:06

Asean’s latest climate plans will face intense scrutiny as climate impacts worsen.

Synopsis: Every first and third Tuesday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Fast-growing South-east Asia is highly vulnerable to climate change.

As the climate risks grow, the region needs to lift its game to ramp up green energy investment and adopt stronger climate targets.

This year is a key test of the region’s climate resolve. All 10 Asean members are obliged to submit updated and more ambitious 2035 climate plans to the UN this year. Only Singapore has done so to date.

The question is, though, with the United States and Europe rolling back on climate finance and targets, does South-East Asia have the will to boost green investment? And where will the money come from?

Green Pulse podcast hosts Audrey Tan and David Fogarty discuss SE Asia’s climate plans with Ms Sharon Seah, Senior Fellow and Coordinator, Asean Studies Centre, at the ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore.

Have a listen and let us know your thoughts!

Highlights of conversation (click/tap above):

2:20 With the US and EU backsliding on climate commitments, are you seeing this in Asean, too?

4:21 Importance of Asean on global climate and energy policies

10:53 Efforts in in funding Asean net zero targets

17:10 Asean ambitions in new climate plans this year

21:54 Could China step in as a major source of climate finance for South-East Asia?

30:09 Why Asean should start showcasing climate investment opportunities with a pavilion at the annual UN climate conference

19 Dec 2024S2E12: Mountains of debt deepening human and environmental crises00:18:04

Developing countries are in a vicious debt cycle with little relief in sight, undermining social progress.

Synopsis: The Straits Times' global contributor Nirmal Ghosh shines a light on Asian perspectives of global and Asian issues with expert guests.

Some 3.3 billion people live in countries that spend more on interest payments in their debt, than on either education or health. In 2023, a record 54 developing countries allocated 10 per cent or more of government revenue just to pay off interest on their debt - reducing funds available to provide basic services from schools to hospitals, for their populations.

Public debt thus becomes a human rights crisis, as well as an environmental crisis as most debt is denominated in foreign currencies. Countries then often have to export their way out of debt - which in many cases, such as in that of Laos, means exploiting their natural resources.

The crisis is worsened by the fact that for many developing countries, it is more costly to borrow than for rich countries - because their credit ratings are worse. For example, the average African country may be paying almost 10 per cent while the United States and Germany may be paying less than 3 per cent, because the latter have higher credit ratings.

In Laos' case, there is a geopolitical dimension as well; about 50 per cent of Laos's external debt is owed to China.

There is wide consensus that this is a full blown crisis, but the solutions to it are hard to implement. Part of the reason is many creditors are private lenders. Yet solutions are critical if developing countries are to be able to dig themselves out from under the mountain of debt they are burdened with.

In this episode of Asian Insider, Olivia De Schutter, professor of law and UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, and Keith Barney, Associate Professor at the Australian National University's Crawford School of Public Policy, share with host Nirmal Ghosh insights into the fundamentally unjust situation many developing countries are trapped in.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:52 Global debt: From $51 trillion in 2010 to $97 trillion in 2023

4:01 The Pact for the Future acknowledges the issue, but much public debt is owned by private creditors

5:53 Why Laos debt crisis is also an environmental crisis; China's role in this

10:04 Since the debt is in foreign currencies, countries must export to repay it

13:59 China offers debt deferrals, not relief, just delaying the issue

16:01 Debt burden is driving the international community to consider debt-for-nature or debt-for-climate swaps

19 Nov 2021S1E55: Rebecca Lim gets engaged, Britney Spears is free and Taylor Swift revisits Red (and Jake Gyllenhaal): #PopVultures Ep 5500:28:38

#PopVultures Ep 55: Rebecca Lim gets engaged, Britney Spears is free and Taylor Swift revisits Red (and Jake Gyllenhaal)

28:37 mins

Synopsis: The Straits Times examines the ins and outs of pop culture in the Asian entertainment and Hollywood scene.

This week, #PopVultures host Jan Lee runs down note-worthy entertainment news for listeners. In local news, Mediacorp actress Rebecca Lim gets engaged to her mystery fiance. She announced the happy news on her Instagram and while she received congratulations and blessings from celebrities and fans alike, fellow actor Ian Fang did not seem as thrilled. Fang and Lim were linked for years but Fang and fellow Mediacorp actress Carrie Wong were caught exchanging sexually suggestive messages to each other in 2019.

Meanwhile in Hollywood, pop star Britney Spears is finally freed from her conservatorship after 13 years. She was previously placed under the conservatorship, which stripped her of her ability to make financial, medical and other personal decisions for herself, in 2008 after she suffered a highly publicised mental breakdown. Jan discusses how there's still more to the case, including Spears' allegations that her father, who was in charge of her conservatorship for years, exploited and surveilled her.

Finally, Jan goes into Taylor Swift's re-recording and releasing Red - an album first released in 2012. Swift added previously unpublished songs into the re-recorded album, including an extended ten-minute version of one of the album's most popular songs All Too Well. This album has reignited interest in Swift's brief relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Many of the album's breakup songs are said to be about Gyllenhaal. Jan also provides a primer on why Swift is re-recording her own music.

Here's what she talked about:

  1. Rebecca Lim's engagement and how Ian Fang's response has shifted the focus away from her happy news (0:49)
  2. Britney is finally free and how the conservatorship system is ripe for abuse (12:15)
  3. Taylor Swift's re-recording and releasing her album Red (19:05)

12 Apr 2022S1E1: Analysing sentiments of some pro-China Singaporeans and differing views over Ukraine crisis00:24:43

Synopsis: The Straits Times' opinion editor Grace Ho takes a hard look at political and social issues of the day with her expert guests.

In this first episode, she looks at the sentiments of pro-China Singaporeans, especially against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Helping her make sense of this small but increasingly vocal group of Singaporeans, as well as the many narratives surrounding the conflict, is Political Science Associate Professor Ian Chong from the National University of Singapore.

Highlights (click/tap above):

03:23 On the claim that Singapore is "following" the Western posture instead of a supposedly "Asian" or "Asean" one: Why such "easy labels" cannot be easily applied in complex geopolitical and cultural debates?

06:24 How much of this is due to misinformation, or disinformation or propaganda by pro-China or pro-Russia camps?

10:58 Beyond what is happening in Ukraine, why are some Singaporeans are so strongly supportive of China? Is it just ties of ethnicity or plain business?

16:05 Why it is simplistic to attribute such sentiments purely to ethnicity

17:30 Prof Chong on the role the media can play, when even within mainstream media and vernacular media, this tension is being played out in the coverage of the Ukraine crisis

19:40 Has national education suffered, partly because there is not much publicly available information about detailed considerations and sensitive closed-door negotiations

02 Oct 2024S1E128: Let’s talk about mental health!00:22:39

There is no health without mental health.

Synopsis: Every first Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you.

Mental health is a national priority in Singapore. While the recent 2023 National Population Health Survey showed that there was an improvement in the mental health of the general population between 2022 and 2023, younger adults aged 18 to 29 remained more affected than other age groups, with about 26 per cent of them reporting poor mental health.

We, at ST, want to normalise conversations about mental health so that people can get timely support. This is super important because there is no health without mental health.

This is why we’re starting a year-long Mental Health Series, which will feature a package of stories focusing on mental health every month.

We will talk to people with mental health conditions about the challenges they face, and what they do to manage their conditions.

We will also look at the evolving mental health landscape here, and tell you what is changing.

In this podcast, ST senior health correspondent Joyce Teo talks to two guests about their help seeking journey.

They are her colleague Lee Li Ying, who’s a correspondent at ST and Yusri Shaggy Sapari, a freelance filmmaker.

Highlights (click/tap above)

4:35 Li Ying’s first visit to a psychiatrist

9:13 Shaggy’s help-seeking journey via the polyclinic route

13:06 What’s the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a counsellor?

18:13 Tips for those thinking of seeking help

21 Jul 2019S1E36: The horror of CATS, The Dead Don't Die PLUS Lion King and SDCC | Double Feature Movie Podcast00:31:21

Yes, we have updated this episode to include the Lion King review so cruelly taken from us by a previous technical glitch, and a look at the big Marvel announcements at Comic-Con.

Elsewhere... What were they thinking? Are the mo-cap feline versions of Judi Dench, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Swift really the nightmare fuel the internet would have you believe?

And filed under 'Is The Anything He Can't Do?', we have to ask if Tom Cruise has been learning to fly fighter jets in his spare time?

And then we ask if the joke has gone too far in Jim Jarmusch's zombie comedy, The Dead Don't Die? Are the laconic styles of Bill Murray and Adam Driver enough to carry this undead vehicle?

Ernest Luis pops by to host Jonathan Roberts as they ramble through the movies.

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get a headstart in your personal finance and career with The Straits Times.

It seems paradoxical for prospective employers to seek prior experience even for entry-level roles.

This reflects the rising bar expected of fresh entrants to the job market.

ST correspondent Tay Hong Yi speaks with his guest, a seasoned career expert who has worked with tertiary students from different backgrounds, on the help at hand.

Ms Sarah Neo, head of the career development office at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:55 Why are employers increasingly seeking prior experience even for entry-level roles?

4:13 The forms such experience can take, from internships to hackathons

9:05 Is it realistic to expect ever more prior experience from students before graduation?

07 Jan 2024S1E35: What do safer transport options for workers have to do with the cost of a BTO flat?00:39:59

Why more evidence is needed to break down the cost of transitioning migrant workers away from being ferried on lorries.

Synopsis: Every second and fourth Monday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at social issues of the day with guests.

Migrant workers have been transported in the backs of lorries here for decades, with an ongoing debate about whether the practice should be banned. Yet, despite the platitudes and petitions signed, employers and the authorities have stopped short of doing so, citing knock-on effects on society.

Besides delays to various construction projects, higher costs for businesses and consequently all Singaporeans, are often cited as a justification for why a ban should not be imposed.

But are Singaporeans really unwilling to fork out more money to ensure that the lives of migrant workers are better protected? Especially when more are stepping up now to call for an end to the unsafe practice?

In this episode, ST journalists Ang Qing and Aqil Hamzah examine the age-old debate with their guests - labour economist and associate professor Walter Theseira, who heads the master of management in urban transportation programme at the Singapore University of Social Sciences, and Suraendher Kumarr, an activist with workers’ rights group Workers Make Possible.

They discuss a survey recently commissioned by The Straits Times and conducted by market research firm Milieu Insight, on how young people in Singapore feel about the practice of ferrying workers on lorries and how much they are willing to pay to stop it.

The survey of 1,000 residents aged 16 to 35, found that while most young people here think that migrant workers should be transported safely to work, more than half surveyed are unwilling to pay more to ban the practice of ferrying migrant workers on lorries.

Highlights (click/tap above):

2:05 Why are businesses reluctant to adopt alternative transport methods?

4:51 Who should bear the brunt of any increase in costs if other forms of transport besides lorries are used?

7:45 What are the challenges businesses face in making such a decision?

16:34 Young people in Singapore appear more concerned about whether current infrastructure can support migrant workers taking public transport

22:29 Why organisations wrote letters to the government in July 2023, calling for a ban on migrant workers being transported on the backs of lorries

34:27 Policy, not just individual action, needed to enact change

Asian Insider Ep 75: What the US' Afghanistan exit means for Asia's regional powers

25:33 mins

Synopsis: Each month, The Straits Times' US bureau chief Nirmal Ghosh presents an Asian perspective of the week's global talking points with expert guests.

What the American failure in Afghanistan, India's unrealised political promises and an emboldened China means for dynamics in Asia?

Nirmal Ghosh chats with two expert guests. Associate Professor Christine Fair is with the Security Studies Program within the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Washington DC.

Prakhar Sharma is a currently New York-based political analyst who has studied Afghanistan for 15 years and lived in the country for several years prior to 2016.

They discuss the following points:

  1. How China & Russia had normalised the Taleban even before the 9/11 attacks (2:30)
  2. Why China ignores human rights abuses in favour of a stable Afghanistan under the Taleban (5:50)
  3. Pakistan has been a spoiler in Afghanistan's national development (9:19)
  4. Why Pakistan will continue to bargain with the US, extracting aid to fight terrorism - and Washington will acquiesce (11:17)
  5. What the American failure in Afghanistan, India's unrealised promise, and China's rise means for regional dynamics and relations with the US (18:49)
  6. Should friends and allies henceforth doubt the US' staying power? (20:01)

18 Apr 2021S1E7: 'I wanted to escape this life by hiding who I was,' says an 'untouchable' in Japan00:14:18

Synopsis: The Invisible Asia Podcast is a special edition series in which The Straits Times casts the spotlight on people and communities living in the shadows of their societies where they exist largely unseen and unheard of. Do follow all nine episodes of Invisible Asia over the next two months on The Straits Times podcast channel on Apple podcasts, Spotify or Google podcasts.

The Straits Times' Japan correspondent Walter Sim speaks with Japan's "untouchables", known as the burakumin. They are descendants of a shunned caste from a long-gone era, who are still ostracised in modern times purely because of their lineage. Our series' narrator is Tan Jia Ning.

Official estimates number the burakumin at 900,000, but activists says there are as many as 3 million across the country who have moved out of the hamlets their ancestors once lived in.

  1. Risa Kumamoto - emerging from discrimination against burakumin to become a respected academic (0:30)
  2. History of Japan's burakumin (2:00)
  3. Emotionally scarred while growing up as a burakumin (3:59)
  4. Taro Murasaki: From monkey trainer to monkey theme park owner (7:46)
  5. The late Japanese politician blocked from becoming Japan's Prime Minister in 2001, chiefly because of his ancestry (9:58)

  6. How burakumin such as abattoir worker Yuki Miyazaki still live in fear of their ancestry being exposed in public (10:23)

02 Aug 2019S1E11: Brownface and race depiction in SG: #Pop Vultures Ep 1100:12:48

#PopVultures Ep 11: On brownface and race depiction in SG

14:10 mins

Synopsis: A podcast by The Straits Times that examines all the ins and outs of pop culture, be it Asian entertainment or Hollywood.

In this episode, the Pop Vultures get deep into a serious topic - the act of brown-facing in Singapore entertainment.

The issue came to the forefront of the local entertainment scene this week after Mediacorp artist Dennis Chew participated in an Epay advertisement where he darkened his skin. This is not the first time local celebrities have landed themselves in hot water over such an act.

The Pop Vultures' co-hosts Jan Lee and Yeo Sam Jo invite colleague S.Sakthivel to discuss briefly, past examples of brown-facing and get into why that is often hurtful to minority races.

Is it ever okay to portray someone of another race?

And finally, what’s the lesson here for local entertainment? Can dialogue and engagement between different races in Singapore be further improved?

It’s a heavy topic but one of importance - let the millennial #PopVultures walk you through it.

03 Sep 2023S1E106: Green hydrogen: All hype or real hope for our planet?00:27:30

This nascent industry holds much promise but needs to manage the giddy ambitions of some investors and governments.

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

Everyone is talking about green hydrogen as the fuel of the future. It’s regarded as a key way the global economy can transition away from polluting fossil fuels to create a cleaner and greener future.

Huge projects have been announced worth many billions of dollars. And more and more governments say they see the promise of using renewable energy to create hydrogen that can power factories, generate electricity and even fuel ships and planes.

But is this all just more hype or is there real promise in rapidly scaling up green hydrogen production? To find out the challenges ahead, ST's climate editor David Fogarty hosts Mr Alex Tancock, chief executive officer and co-founder of InterContinental Energy, a developer of large-scale hydrogen projects in some of the sunniest places on Earth.

Highlights (click/tap above):

1:34 What is green hydrogen? Why is it attracting so much interest from investors and governments?

4:21 Main uses for green hydrogen

16:40 More than 1,000 green hydrogen projects have been announced recently, yet very few have reached financial close: What's holding the industry back?

20:27 Mr Alex Tancock: "The challenge we have is to scale-up and scale-up very quickly. And I see that as more of an opportunity."

#GameOfTwoHalves Ep 86: Post-circuit breaker scenarios for Singapore's September F1 Grand Prix outcome

12:22 mins

Synopsis: #GameofTwoHalves is The Straits Times' weekly sports podcast that is out every Tuesday.

Money FM's Rachel Kelly calls up ST assistant sports editor Jonathan Wong and sports correspondent Sazali Abdul Aziz.

They discuss the following topics in the first and second halves of this episode:

1. It is a tricky time for sport in Singapore; the government has begun to ease up on circuit breaker restrictions, but there is little to suggest the Republic's battle against the coronavirus pandemic will end anytime soon. This puts events like the Singapore Grand Prix, scheduled for Sept 20, in serious doubt. What are the likely scenarios?

2. Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong last week said the move to Phase Two of post-circuit breaker measures could happen before the scheduled date of July 2. Sport Singapore has just announced that athletes who have qualified or are close to qualifying for the Olympics and Paralympics, can return to training on June 2 under "controlled conditions". What does this mean for athletes?

Synopsis: This is a special episode of The Straits Times' video series The Big Story.

Both the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the police are looking into the case of a former domestic worker acquitted of stealing from Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong and his family. Liew, 74, stepped down from his post after an announcement in a statement on Sept 10, to bring forward his retirement from the role.

In a statement on Sunday (Sept 6), MOM said that it is in consultation with the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) as to whether further action, if any, ought to be taken following comments by the judge, Justice Chan Seng Onn.

The AGC said earlier on Sunday that it would be studying Justice Chan's judgment.

06 Aug 2020S1E27: Making peat forests pay for their own conservation: Green Pulse Ep 2700:18:05

Green Pulse Ep 27: Making peat forests pay for their own conservation

18:05 mins

Synopsis: Green Pulse is an environmental podcast series at The Straits Times which analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change.

The dry season in South-east Asia is just around the corner, bringing with it the prospect of haze. Fires in Indonesia can be started by accident, or deliberately to clear land. And because they take place on carbon-rich peatlands - naturally water-logged ecosystems that are flammable when drained for agriculture - the fires can burn underground and for days on end, causing them to spiral out of control.

But in the heart of Borneo, a businessman has a novel idea for how to make peat forests pay for their own conservation. The Katingan Mentaya project in Central Kalimantan is a preserved peat forest more than twice the size of Singapore. Healthy peatlands have plenty of carbon locked in their depths - and that is essentially what the Katingan Mentaya project in Central Kalimantan hopes to "sell" as carbon credits.

Active conservation and restoration efforts, such as the replanting of trees in degraded areas, have allowed the land to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it underground, equivalent to taking two million cars off the road each year.

The 7.5 million carbon credits that the Katingan Mentaya project produces each year are sold to businesses. Each unit purchased prevents a tonne of carbon dioxide from entering the earth's atmosphere.

Tune in to this episode for more on the ‘black gold’ in the heart of Borneo, as we chat with Mr Dharsono Hartono, the co-founder of the Katingan Mentaya project.

02 May 2021S1E49: Can aquaculture solve the seafood “seaspiracy”? - Green Pulse Ep 4900:20:39

Green Pulse Ep 49: Can aquaculture solve the seafood “seaspiracy”?

20:38 mins

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, The Straits Times analyses the beat of the changing environment, from biodiversity conservation to climate change in this podcast series.

The recently-released Netflix film “Seaspiracy”, which calls on people to stop eating seafood, has generated widespread debate. Supporters say the film highlights the impact of industrial fishing on marine life, bringing public attention to an aspect of the trade that not many usually think about. But others have lambasted the British filmmaker Ali Tabrizi for inaccurate facts and figures used to support the arguments made.

In this episode, ST environment correspondent Audrey Tan and climate change editor David Fogarty speak with Professor Dean Jerry, an aquaculture expert from the Singapore campus of the James Cook University, about the implications of seafood consumption and the role of aquaculture in feeding the world.

They discuss the following points:

  1. Is the demand for seafood really emptying the oceans? (2:43)
  2. How can Singapore consumers identify sustainable wild-caught seafood? (6:55)
  3. What is the role of aquaculture in feeding the world? (9:33)
  4. But aquaculture does not have a pristine reputation, so can it be made more environmentally-friendly? (13:28)
  5. Can there still be plenty of fish in the sea, while ensuring that communities can continue to get access to seafood? (17:25)

02 Oct 2024S1E12: Rooting for our mother tongues in Singapore00:31:47

Your mother tongue can also be your super power - that’s what our three guests on The Usual Place tell us.

Synopsis: The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah hunts for new perspectives on issues that matter to young people.

In this episode, Zhang Xi Ying, a content producer at HeyKaki, C Aishwarya, a branding and promotions executive from Tamil Murasu and Rabiatul Adawiya Binhan, deputy audience and growth editor from Berita Harian, share their views on what it takes to be bilingual.

Beyond acquiring another language, your mother tongue helps shape some sense of your identity, and preserve culture and connections with your roots.

For one, it’s no longer passe to be fluent in your mother tongue, say Xi Ying and Aishwarya. But sometimes, the struggle to pick it up can be real, adds Rabiatul, who is trying to get her two children to learn Malay.

Learning our mother tongues came up at the National Day Rally (NDR) in August 2024.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, said in his Mandarin speech, that he understood that the Chinese community is “very concerned” about the standard of Mandarin in Singapore.

In an effort to spur on students who are strong in their mother tongue, Mr Wong announced that those who do well in these languages at primary school will be able to study it at a higher level from Secondary 1.

      Highlights (click/tap above):

5:59 Why learning your mother tongue brings you closer to culture

10:48 Clinging to their culture when they can’t speak their mother tongue

13:42 Mixing English and mother tongue languages to appeal

Celebrity couples who confirmed they were dating after the Dispatch New Year report includes Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, Exo's Kai and Blackpink's Jennie and Lee Seung-gi and Girls Generation's Yoona.

Using that as a jumping-off point, Penelope and Jan - who are both long-time fangirls of different groups like BTS, Arashi and One Direction - discuss the taboo around dating for idols, how idols are marketed, the consequences that can arise from a dating or marriage scandal and their own thoughts on the issues.
