This week Brendan discusses carbon capture technologies with Dr. Stephen Pacala. Dr. Pacala is Frederick D. Petrie Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University and Director of the Princeton Environmental Institute. He also co-directs the Carbon Mitigation Initiative, a collaboration between Princeton University, British Petroleum and the Ford Motor Company to find solutions to the problem of global warming. His research covers a wide variety of ecological and mathematical topics with an emphasis on interactions between greenhouse gases, climate and the biosphere.

He has written and edited articles and educational materials in life sciences and space sciences for a range of audiences, and medical content for a range of medical specialties, including medical genetics, gene therapy, aerospace medicine, hyperbaric medicine, neurology, hematology, oncology, and cardiology, and other topic areas such as radiation bioeffects and digital health. He has been featured in Scientific American, Genetic Literacy Project (where gene therapy and other genetic biotechnologies have been among his principal topics), Leaps Magazine, Discover Magazine’s The Crux , Wired UK, and other online and print outlets.

Dr. Warmflash was in the first cohort of NASA Astrobiology postdoctoral trainees in 2000-2002 at NASA's Johnson Space Center. He has also worked on astronaut health issues, such as injuries during underwater training for extravehicular activity. Dr. Warmflash holds an M.D. from Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine and a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Dr. Francis Halzen is a Professor of Physics at The University of Wisconsin - Madison and the principal investigator of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and earlier this year his name was attached to an incredible discovery and advancement for the field of astrophysics. 

In July 2018, IceCube announced that they have traced an extremely-high-energy neutrino that hit their detector in September 2017 back to its point of origin. The specifics are mentioned in the discussion. This is the first time that a neutrino detector has been used to locate an object in space.

Mike is a research geophysicist with the Cascades Volcano Observatory and the current Scientist-in-Charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. Mike has taken part in studies on a variety of volcanic systems in the United states, including Mount St. Helens and other volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest,  Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes in Hawaii, and the Yellowstone caldera. Episode 70 features Dr. Mike Poland. We discuss whether Yellowstone is at risk of another super eruption, how it is monitored, what precursors will indicate an oncoming eruption, probing volcanic activity with measurements of surface gravity, and much more!

Mike is a research geophysicist with the Cascades Volcano Observatory and the current Scientist-in-Charge of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.  His area of specialization is volcano geodesy, which emphasizes the surface deformation and gravity fields associated wth volcanic activity.  This work involves the use of space-based tecnologies, like Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), as well as ground-based techniques, like microgravity surveys.  Mike has taken part in studies on a variety of volcanic systems in the United states, including Mount St. Helens and other volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest,  Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes in Hawaii, and the Yellowstone caldera.  His recent work has focused on using gravity change over time to understand the character of the fluids that drive volcanic unrest, and also on the potential of satellite data to improve forecasts of future changes in volcanic activity.

She is an expert in the areas of galaxy formation and evolution, galaxy morphologies, galaxy mergers and interactions, and the properties of infrared galaxies. She is a leading member in several large collaborative multiwavelength surveys, including COSMOS (The Cosmic Evolution Survey), CANDELS (The Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey), and CEERS (The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey).
