Adrienne has worked with a wide range of brands across wine, cocktails, finance and technology. She's a Certified Sommelier and the author of Where Bartenders Drink, a comprehensive book that gathers 700+ bar recommendations of 300 expert bartenders in 60 different countries.

Chris and Damola from Spearhead Spirits stop by to talk about their quest to bring African spirits out of obscurity and onto the back bar. With a vodka, a gin made with African botanicals and an agave spirit (much to Greg’s delight) the two are on a mission to introduce the world to a range of flavors they didn’t know they didn’t know about. Together they talk about starting a company right around the time the Suez Canal got jammed, getting agave to grow on a whole new continent, and their plans for the future.

Plus, Amor y Amargo is back in its old space and Greg’s old boss is back in the news! One’s good, one’s not so good. You can probably figure out which is which but tune in anyway.

Harry is the co-founder of The Brooklyn Kitchen, which he started in 2006 with his wife Taylor Erkkinen. Interested and creative home cooks, Harry and Taylor recognized an opportunity to create a community space in their Williamsburg neighborhood. In 2009, following the insane success of the Pig Butchering classes, they founded the Meat Hook with partners, and moved to the 100 Frost Street location.

Alexandre Gabriel is the Master blender at both Maison Ferrand Cognac as well as Plantation Rums. Growing up on a farm gave him insight as to how taking care of the land can take care of you. He brings that ethos to every bottle he produces. It’s a fascinating talk, tune in!

Five years ago, Hero opened its doors in Nairobi Kenya as the first bar with a dedicated cocktail laboratory in east Africa. The idea was the be the sort of place superheroes (and supervillains) would chill in on their days off. What would they eat? What would they drink? How do they unwind?

Today, Hero has cracked into the World’s 50 Best Bars and is touring the globe, with pop-ups from Mexico City to Tokyo. Richie Barrow and Kelvin Thairu sit down with the band to talk about how their vision of fostering a Kenyan cocktail scene got started, how they source their ingredients, and the ingredients they bring with them when they’re on tour that highlight the amazing produce and flavors of east Africa.

On this week's episode of The Speakeasy, Damon and Sother are joined in studio by Whiskey Ambassador Joe Riggs of Redemption Whiskey.

Having grown up the grandson of Springfield, KY Bootlegger and son of a former bartender; Joe Riggs was raised hearing stories of his Grandfather being “the only bootlegger to drive around Nelson County Courthouse on two wheels without breaking a bottle.”

As well as watching his mother memorize recipes, Joe was always drawn to work in spirits and hospitality industry. Currently a 16-year veteran of restaurants Joe Riggs has won multiple cocktail contests, bartended and hosted events at such cocktail gatherings as the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, Tales of the Cocktail and The Kentucky Bourbon Festival.

From a young age, William Elliott had a fascination with taste and memory, and sharing the experience. Though he grew up in a “dry” household, his obsession with liquor and food sprang from elicit sips of pastis from his parent’s cupboard and busted attempts at bouillabaisse. During a stint playing music around California and the desert Southwest, Elliott realized a new obsession, and transitioned full-time into the realm of beer, wine, and spirits. He has been an integral part of the critically-acclaimed Maison Premiere since its opening in 2011, serving as its Head Bartender for the three years it was nominated for a James Beard Foundation Awards. After MP won the JBFA for Best Bar Program in 2016, Elliott, now as Bar Director, conceptualized the bar at Sauvage as an strong-headed sibling to Maison Premiere; in an age of multi-national brands and marketing campaigns, the liquor selections and cocktails speak to nativity and so honor the producers and regions from which they hail. Within months, the bar at Sauvage was lauded with glowing reviews, including NY Time’s Pete Wells enjoying many treasured bottles on the back-bar and the “exemplary” cocktails.

Kate Perry grew up in Maine, and earned degrees in Anthropology/Archaeology & Geography/Geology from the University of Denver. She moved to Seattle after college, drank a lot of sherry, opened a rum bar, and drank a lot of rum. She was invited to Haiti with the Velier spirits company, where she fell in love with Haiti and fell in love with Velier. After returning to the states, she moved to NYC to work for Velier, the Indiana Jones of rum -- so she's using her degrees and still drinking a lot of rum.

Claire Sprouse has bartended across the United States' at some of the most well-known cocktail institutions, starting in Houston and most recently at ABV in San Francisco. In 2014, she co-founded Tin Roof Drink Community, a consulting and education company committed to exploring sustainability in hospitality spaces. Today on the Speakeasy, it's episode number 200! Damon Boelte and Sother Teague talk Japan and the evolution of bar tools with Cocktail Kingdom's Greg Boehm. But before that, we also hear from a special guest calling in to wish Damon the very best.

Micah Melton was born and raised in Davenport, Iowa and began his studies in computer science before finding his calling in the culinary arts. While attending Culinary Arts school he began working in bars to pay the bills and fell in love with the beverage side of the industry.

Micah was part of the opening team that envisioned and created the opening menu at the Aviary. He studied and trained in the kitchen at Alinea restaurant for the opening of the new bar concept. His role at the time of opening was the 'ice chef' -- probably the only one in the world -- charged with creating over 30 types of ice for the bar program. The program now boosts an impressive 39 varieties of ice.

Micah currently serves as Beverage Director of the Alinea Group and is in charge of the cocktail, non-alcoholic, beer, and spirits menus at The Aviary & the Office Chicago, The Aviary & the Office NYC, Next Restaurant, Roister and Alinea.

This week on The Speakeasy, Sother is joined in the studio by cocktail specialist Michael Reynolds of Black Crescent. Reynolds worked under Sam Anderson, who opened and curated the cocktail menus at Black Market and Lovers of Today. He later moved to the north end of Tompkins Square Park to pour at East Village stalwarts The Beagle and Booker & Dax, during which time he would also curate the cocktail programs at some well known watering holes in lower Manhattan, before heading uptown to the Mckittrick Hotel to manage the bar at Gallow Green.

Elayne Duff, Director of Advocacy for Samson & Surrey, founder of the Beverage BA Academy and all around bar all-star (and former rescuer) sits down with the band to talk brand ambassadorship, keeping busy, when to stay humble and when to brag just a little bit. Plus, one of her brands has a new collaboration with Alice In Chains, so you should check it out. Oh, and there’s a little bit of housekeeping news on the show from last week too. 1.5oz Laird's Bonded Apple Brandy 

.25oz Peychaud's Aperitivo 

.75oz Lemon Juice 

.5oz Orange Juice 

.75oz Cinnamon Syrup 

*Shake or pre-batch for larger gatherings. Top with ice and sparkling water for a collins or hot water for a toddy. Either way, lemon wheel garnish.

Rodrigo Bojorquez of Kilinga Bacanora sits down with the band to talk about his own journey of going legit, what makes this spirit from Sonora so special, and how he’s crafting his spirit for lighter, fruitier notes to compete on liquor stores’ already well-stocked agave shelves.
