05 Jun 2020The Smashing Pumpkast: Pandemic Mixes Vol. 1 (No Past. No Future. Very Little Sun.)01:33:13

It's our first quarantine lockdown episode (Recorded April 10th)! A lot of technical aspects of recording remotely were unknown, so we used this episode to make sure we could record future eps and thankfully, it worked like a charm. Frank & Pat make their own 14 track Pumpkins mix and break down what they chose and why. The guidelines for the mixes? It had to be on Spotify (so we could share with the listeners) and that it only stuck to Smashing Pumpkins only (no solo or side projects). Hopefully you all enjoy this fun little ep before we dive back into the demo cassettes!

28 May 2022JEFF SCHROEDER RETURNS! Rock Invasion 2 Tour Check-In01:09:15

The Shredder himself was kind enough to check in with us (during a rare moment of downtime) to give an update about the incredible Rock Invasion 2 tour and how it's been going from the band's perspective. We talk zig-zagging these United States, the differences between the primary shows and festival sets, gear stuff, how the band felt during the storm delay in Memphis and more. Jeff also teases a teeny bit about the big Fall tour with Jane's Addiction, and rightfully steers clear of giving up too much on the song “Beguiled” and what it was doing on the rehearsal setlist.

It takes a lot of effort for us not to just GUSH about the level the band is performing at these days... Did we succeed? YOU DECIDE!

It's the 25th Anniversary of the release of the "1979" single, so what better way to celebrate than by talking to one of the ACTUAL cool kids in the iconic video, LAUREN ENGLISH?! Lauren reminisces with us about how she was discovered and cast in the video, how fun it was to roll in a giant tire, and her experiences simulating a teenage party that was not such a simulation after all. She also discusses her connection to James Iha and Marilyn Manson, what she's up to nowadays and the real-life mishap involving tapes on the roof of a car that was later referenced in the "Perfect" video. It was a really great conversation and we think you Pumpkinheads will love it. Thanks to our pal Alex Scordelis for helping us produce this episode!

04 Aug 2021MACHINA/THE MACHINES OF GOD (PT. 2 of 2)01:44:52

It's Part Two of our Machina/The Machines of God deep dive! In this episode we go deep into the maturation of the band's jangly, goth, pre-Gish sound into something thick and powerful, the 80's Pop Rock of "The Imploding Voice," and some seeds of CYR to come. We also discuss the Bowie Scary Monsters influence, the beautiful inspiration behind "With Every Light," and Frank's "Crying Tree of Mercury" and Gremlins association. All that plus some much deserved appreciation for the artist behind the Machina album art (and some cool custom skateboards on his website), Vasily Kafanov, our next tour wishlist and dreams of Katie Cole and Sierra Swan doing live backing vocals on some of these ol' tracks. We also ask the big question: Does Machina sync perfectly with The Never Ending Story?! No. It does not, but it’s fun to think it does!

10 Mar 2021JACK BATES01:17:37

Today on the Pumpkast, we hop across the pond (socially distanced via Zencastr) to chat with touring Smashing Pumpkins bassist and all-around great guy, Jack Bates

Jack tells us about meeting Billy for the first time when Corgan sat in with New Order, and the journey from there to being asked to join the Pumpkins while on tour with his Dad's band Peter Hook and the Light. He also recalls all the work and rehearsal that went into the 'Shiny' tour, getting to take the piss out of fellow British football fans while touring with Noel Gallagher, and what it’s like playing with the greatest living rock drummer, Jimmy Chamberlain!

Jack also shares his love of Dinosaur Jr., Eric Avery and Metallica, and gives a very important note to the current bassist in New Order. All that and more – plus the Pumpkins songs that are on Jack's live-setlist wishlist. By the end of this interview, you'll be buying your own Yamaha BB 1200S and cheering on Manchester United!

And joining us to talk about this non-album is Ryan Parrish (of the bands Celebrity, Hopesfall, In Parallel). We discuss how this was an important Pumpkins release for all of us, how we worried about parents hearing certain lyrics, Glam Rawk, Iha Country Western, Pee Pee Bugs, Cheeky Corgan, Dan Aykroyd joining Hopesfall, Morning Pages lyrics for "Spaced" and so much more!

11 May 2022BILLY CORGAN: TheFutureEmbrace + Tilt02:19:04

A misunderstood and underappreciated album for its time? Sounds like our Billy! Today on the 'kast we're discussing Billy Corgan's first solo outing, TheFutureEmbrace. An underrated "electronic" (but having more in common with shoegaze) album featuring some refreshing, surprising elements that for whatever reason (many reasons) didn't resonate with the public and some fans at the time. It also didn't help that Billy announced the reformation of the Pumpkins the day of the album's release, possibly undercutting any deeper and repeated dives listeners would have given it. Lucky for you, THE SMASHING PUMPKAST exists and WE'RE taking that deep dive into an album there's LOTS love about. Or dare we say...embrace?

We also talk about the "bonus" track "Tilt" and ponder if it suffered the same fate as "Let Me Give The World To You." All things change, including one's experience with this album over time. Enjoy!

27 Jul 2022AMERICAN GOTHIC EP00:59:14

"ZEITGEIST SUMMER" continues to sizzle on as today on the 'kast, we delve into 2008's AMERICAN GOTHIC EP. If Zeitgeist was the big swing to prove the Pumpkins still had their rock chops, this iTunes-exclusive continuation of the Zeitgeist project represented the pendulum swinging in the other direction, reestablishing SP's mastery of the "softer" side of things.

We're filling in the gaps of our Pumpkins history with this one, gang. 2008 was a heady time for your hosts and (in addition to being the year we met!) our Pumpkin antennas were not fully plugged in at the time of its online release. After addressing the ele-font in the room... we have a great time digging deep into this textured, crunchy EP, exploring the meaning of “thrumming” and discussing how "The Rose March" hit Frank at exactly the right moment.

We'll lay roses at your feet 'til you decide there is something great in you, Pumpkinheads! ❤️

19 May 2020Mellon Collie Memories with Lauren Adams / "Nothing Ever Changes" Demo Cassette Commentary00:56:33

This episode serves up two hearty chunks of Pumpkin meat! First we talk to special guest Lauren Adams (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Modern Family, Drunk History) about her Catholic confirmation retreat, vividly linked in memory to a CD copy of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. In the process we cover everything from dead bunnies to Sinéad O'Connor to the state of the Catholic church in Buffalo, NY. Next, Frank and Pat provide commentary and analysis while listening to one of the Smashing Pumpkins' first demo cassettes, Nothing Ever Changes.

26 Jun 2021The Arising! Tour & D'arcy's Exit (w/ Karyn Cooper of Chick-Lit Pod)01:36:44

We're kicking off "Machina Summer" with a hot one! In 1999, The Smashing Pumpkins took a break from recording Machina: The Machines of God to embark on a nine-date US tour dubbed "The Arising!". It seemed like a triumphant moment in SP history, with Jimmy's return marking the first time all four original members had played together since 1996. The short, small-venue tour also gave the band a chance to debut new songs from Machina I and II and have some fun with re-imagined takes on old favorites. Sadly, it also marked the exit of bassist D'arcy Wretzky, the only original pumpkin never to return to the patch (thus far...). Joining us to discuss the tour as well as D'arcy's exit and lasting influence is Karyn Cooper from Chick-Lit Pod! We have a healing group therapy session with Karyn and later share a pretty stunning first-hand account from one of our listeners who was there.

It's part one of our two-part coverage of The Arising!, a fleeting, fraught, fascinating moment in Pumpkins history. Enjoy!

23 Dec 2022SKYSAW- GREAT CIVILIZATIONS w/ Patreon member Joe01:26:57

In 2008 Jimmy Chamberlin decided to walk away from the Pumpkins in order to focus on family and other projects. One of those projects was the short-lived Skysaw (originally named "This"). In 2011 Skysaw released its first and only full-length album "Great Civilizations", which mixes prog, alternative and a little country and jazz? Joining Frank to discuss this album is guest co-host and Pumpkast Patreon member "Joe".

In this episode they discuss Jimmy's essential instincts to provide what's best for a song, subtle nods to "Disintegration" and what exactly is the secret in Mike Reina's pocket?

One thing's for sure, "Jimmy is Gandalf".

27 Jul 202330 Years of Siamese Dream w/ Jacob Givens00:35:32

Today (pun intended) marks the 30th Anniversary of the seminal Pumpkins album Siamese Dream. Joining Frank to discuss the anniversary of Siamese Dream is someone who is no stranger to the Pumpkins community, Jacob Givens! We reminisce about our memories of hearing the album for the first time and the lasting impact it's had 30 years later. Happy 30th, Siamese Dream!

(apologies for some of the wonky Zoom audio)

10 Jul 2021The Arising! Tour: Behind The Scenes (w/ Peter Makebish)01:12:32

DJ and Filmmaker Peter Makebish tagged along with the Pumpkins on their 9-date Arising! Tour and filmed every show – as well as lots of candid behind-the-scenes footage never before seen by the Pumpkinhead public. As he watched through the tapes, he realized he had a potential documentary on his hands. 20-plus years later, the footage MIGHT finally see the light of day.

Peter takes us through his history with the band, his approach to filmmaking and lots of memories from the tour, including giving Jimmy Flemion from The Frogs a haircut onstage during "1979." All that plus Billy on a water slide, "the fun bus," the Pumpkins' lasting legacy and Peter's hopes for his documentary to finally see a release. Party like it's 1999, gang! Enjoy!

Special thanks to Adam Bramwell.

30 Dec 2020The Aeroplane Flies High: Tonight, Tonight / Thirty-Three EPs01:47:07

As we land the plane on this most turbulent of years, we also conclude our sonic flight over The Aeroplane Flies High – with the "Tonight, Tonight" and "Thirty-Three" EPs. Frank and Pat talk the cohesiveness of the "Tonight, Tonight" EP and the surprisingly pleasant hodgepodge of songs that is "Thirty-Three." In the process we touch on the darker side of the song "Tonight, Tonight," Country Shoegaze, and how remastered versions of beloved works can sometimes lead to "Jedi Rocks." We also get another underrated gem from James, crack the Tom Selleck code and reminisce on how the Pumpkast is our own blue heaven! You'll be "happy as a turtle" listening to this one. Putting it out to the Universe: 2021 is the year Frank & Pat direct a Pumpkins video. Make it happen, cosmos!

27 Mar 2021ADORE (Part 1)02:20:38

An album your boys love with all their hearts, it had to be split into two parts! That's right, Pumpkinheads, Frank and Pat are finally covering 1998's "Adore." This two-part exploration visits a dark time in the Pumpkins' history, during which Jimmy's exit and personal loss signaled the beginning of the end (is the beginning?) of the band as we knew it. While a polarizing album for Pumpkins fans at the time, the daring Adore – or in Billy-ism, "A Door" – has aged into one of the most beloved albums in the SP catalog.

In Part One we immerse ourselves in the emotional highs and lows of an album that feels like love, loss and a bleak, serene comedown from designer drugs. On our journey we visit the Roxbury Guys, take a detour into Yosemite Sam Elliot territory and work through our misguided judgments of the VH1 Fashion Awards association.

All that plus Frank attempts to read Billy's re-issue liner notes aloud and Pat discovers he's related to most of the Adore tracklist. We'd be crestfallen if you missed this one!

28 Jul 2021MACHINA/THE MACHINES OF GOD (PT. 1 of 2)02:25:42

It was the end of The Smashing Pumpkins (for a while, of course). In 2000, the band announced their breakup and released what was to be their final album, Machina/The Machines of God. A loosely conceptual album that got buried in a time of TRL Teen Pop and Nü Metal, over the years Machina has gained the respect and admiration (we believe) it deserves. In Part 1 of our 2-part coverage of "Machina One" we discuss the high concept, Bowie-esque themes of Zero transforming to Glass, The Jekyll & Hyde nature of "The Everlasting Gaze", the Peter Hook hook of "Raindrops + Sunshowers" and the cream of the "radio, radio" songs crop that is "I of the Mourning". We delve deep into the many sonic layers of this deceptively beautiful, challenging album and explore how the band pulls elements from their entire history, circling back to their 80’s roots while implementing all the power and experience they accumulated along the way. Join us as we ponder the "Cherub Rock"/"Heavy Metal Machine" connection, the bittersweet feeling of "This Time" and this week's big thought experiment: Is Machina the daytime companion to The Cure's Disintegration? Think about it... All that and more plus Pat’s Romantic Teen Comedy epiphany with "The Sacred and Profane"!

01 Sep 2020Fruit Bats' Eric D. Johnson Talks New Siamese Dream Cover Album01:02:33

Frank & Pat welcome Eric D. Johnson (aka Fruit Bats) to the Pumpkast to talk about his brand new, full-album cover of Siamese Dream out now on Turntable Kitchen! We had a great time talking to Eric about growing up in Chicago and watching the Pumpkins break big, what Siamese Dream means to him, and his approach to re-imagining the iconic album. We also discuss the Pumpkins' unique Midwest mysticism, the nexus of alternative radio and bonehead classic rock, and the freedom of having a "big tent" of musical influences. All that plus the boys dole out their first Pumpkast Seal of Approval (spoiler alert: this album is the recipient!). Apologies for the few moments of crackly audio. Enjoy!

09 Aug 2023WILLIAM PATRICK CORGAN - COTILLIONS w/ PAM FISHER03:27:12

In 2019, Billy Corgan released his 3rd solo album (2nd under the name William Patrick Corgan), "Cotillions". A double-album written in 2017 during Thirty Days – a month-long journey Corgan took across America. For this album, Frank needed a special guest who has a particular affinity for the album and all things Pumpkins and WPC. Enter the Pumpkin Queen herself, Pam Fisher! Frank and Pam dub this album "Cosmic Country" and navigate the starry country backroads that inspired this special album.

They discuss "complexity couched in simplicity", WPC's family history connection to E.T. and Gremlins, identity & history (and where the two meet), "Big G", pitching a kid's book to WPC based on "Neptulius" and romanticization vs the dark truth of American history and distilling how you feel about the two.

We also show some love for the wonderful Katie Cole, the diverse embarrassment of riches in the Corgan/SP catalog and even a bit of Duran Duran.

17 May 2023JIMMY CHAMBERLIN COMPLEX: THE PARABLE w/ Patreon Member Joe01:06:21

In 2017, the wheels were in motion for Jimmy Chamberlin's return to the Smashing Pumpkins. But before his triumphant return to the Pumpkins, he returned with his other band, the "Jimmy Chamberlin Complex" and released his 2nd JCC album titled "The Parable". A jazz/fusion itch Jimmy gets to scratch outside of the Pumpkins. Joining Frank as guest co-host (returning from the SKYSAW episode) is Patreon member Joe!

We talk about the more jazz/fusion angle "The Parable" takes as opposed to the jazz/alternative rock feel of SKYSAW and "Life Begins Again", Sarsten Noice's art for the album and how it associates with its themes (and with Jimmy) and we heap tons of praises, as always, for Jimmy's incredible skills.

25 Aug 2021MACHINA II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music02:30:00

Released for free on the Internet (ever heard of it?) in September of 2000, The Smashing Pumpkins' sixth and "final" studio album, MACHINA II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music was an unconventional release, born of resistance from the record label to the idea of a grand Machina double album and an instinct to lean into the new phenomenon of digital file sharing rather than fight it. Despite its bootleg nature and sub-Pono audio quality (sorry, Neil) Machina II is chock full of fan favorites and steeped in a retrospective and introspective view on fame.

In this episode, Frank and Pat delve into the proper, official Machina II album (we'll cover all of the EP tracks in upcoming episodes), discussing everything from Billy’s throwback, child-like coo in "Innosense" to the stone-cold, undeniable spank-ass rock of "Dross." We also get into the the aerial view of the Machina project as a whole and pray to the Almighty Lord Santa for the deluxe reissue.

All that plus Frank embraces a wrestling persona and becomes the heel when talking about "Home," and we answer big questions like: Which song reminds Pat of a clown funeral? Is this version of "Here’s to the Atom Bomb" a subtle nod to Courtney Love? And IS "White Spyder" the Pumpkins’ "Ace of Spades"?

We say it's natural/magic, kid!

07 Jan 2022ZWAN: MARY STAR OF THE SEA w/ Alex Scordelis02:30:10

We're kicking off 2022 with the penultimate, climactic installment of Zwan Zeason, our coverage of the one and ONLY official full-length Zwan album, MARY STAR OF THE SEA! Joining us is a great old friend of ours (and unofficial Pumpkast producer), comedy writer, music journalist and Zwan enthuziast, Alex Scordelis (The Cinnamon Boys, Paper Magazine, writer for Difficult People and Billy on the Street). Alex kicks off our discussion with a reading of his review of Mary Star of the Sea from his college newspaper in 2003, tells us a story about getting kicked out of an interview with Courtney Love, and even busts out his guitar for some chord progression guessing game action.

We also discuss the 90’s-era need to fill a CD to the brim, finally giving in to the shameless rock of "Baby Let’s Rock," Lords of Synth dance moves that could have improved the "Lyric" video, and the challenges of being a parent while still making time for the entire "Jesus I/ Mary Star of the Sea" track. All that plus answers to the big questions: Who exactly is Billy Burke (turns out it's a Wizard of Oz reference)? Can Wikipedia be wrong? and Does Stephen Malkmus actually like Zwan?! Oh... and you better believe we make lots of “Get Back” comparisons (Billy is a total Paul).

It's a fun, inspired, doomed period of Billy’s career that STILL reared a solid, unique and underrated album.

Hope this episode offers you a little sunshine just to butter your toast!

24 Nov 2021JUDAS O (w/ Matthew Legard) 02:41:48

Just in time for your Thanksgiving travels (or to keep you company as you actively avoid the family) it's time to feast on Judas O! Gather 'round the Pumpkast table as guest Matthew Legard (The Colourflies) helps us tackle this delicious b-sides collection and spiritual sister to Pisces Iscariot. We speculate on questions like: What's the meaning behind the titles "Marquis In Spades" and "Set The Ray To Jerry"? Is it a coincidence that the Iha songs are both track 5 on Pisces and Judas? And would the Pumpkins turn down Metallica’s "Some Kind of Monster" therapist?

We also discuss the international espionage feelings of "Because You Are," The "Sparrow"/"Disarm" connection, "Waiting"'s "Spyro"-like sound, and Billy’s playful send-up of his own voice in "Rock On." All that plus the similarities between "Winterlong" and "Vanity" and the Willy-Wonka-Boat-Ride vibes of "My Mistake." We even make room at the table for Evan Dando's Mom.

13 Jul 2022ZEITGEIST 02:28:47

Fifteen years ago the Pumpkins released their infamous, quasi-political, strangely prescient comeback album, ZEITGEIST. It was originally rolled out in an array of different colored CD and digital versions with slightly different tracklists, but today we're merging them all into one 16-track "complete" version of the album. A sort of unofficial "Rainbow Edition" if you will.

We dive deep into each of these tracks, really savoring ones like "Stellar" and "Ma Belle" that us basic red-version kids never got to fully experience at the time of the album's release. We also contemplate the massive weight of expectations a band must feel when coming back after seven years sans two original members, the Danny Elfman collab track that almost was, and the hot take: are several of these songs expressions of Billy's love for Jimmy? Discuss.

All that plus the big questions: Was Zeitgeist Billy's response to the state of the nation...of Rock? Is this a 2000s rock radio album or an ode to rip-ass Scorpions rock of the ’70s and ’80s? And finally, is it STILL considered underrated when most of the fanbase laments its absence from streaming services? This episode has it all, including an interruption from a black cat trying to kill a squirrel in front of us.

A million watts of sound can't compare... to the fun we had talking about this album! WE. ARE. STARZ. We arrrreeeeeeeee!

05 Sep 2021MACHINA II: EP ONE (CR-01)01:25:18

Fall is right around the corner, but Machina Summer ain't over yet! Today we're covering the Machina II EPs, starting with EP One (CR-01). Joining us to talk about all three EPs is musician, writer and longtime Pumpkinhead Alan Passman (author of When The Pain Starts), who tells us about the "Stand Inside Your Love"-inspired poem and artwork from his new graphic novel and what the song and band have meant to him over the years. In addition to lots of great insights on the Pumpkins and the Machina era, Alan reveals that he was an extra in the "Perfect" music video, making a plea to Billy/Santa Claus to release the “Perfect House Show" on vinyl. He also shares a paper towel-related interaction with Billy that didn't go so well.

We all discuss the satisfying wail of a Corgan and Iha solo, the Black Sabbath fog of "Saturnine" (and how that song title inspired Frank’s high school alternative band), and the thick, concrete-building sludge that is this version of "Glass’ Theme." All that plus bands that "ripped off" the Pumpkins and the joy of mishearing "widows" as "weirdos."

“If you can’t stand the heat, get off of Mickey Rourke’s sex grill." Enjoy!

20 Oct 2021THE "FINAL" METRO SHOW 12/02/200001:55:59

It was to be the FINAL performance of The Smashing Pumpkins. An emotional night and return back to where it all started, the Cabaret Metro. While Frank and Pat weren't fortunate enough to attend the show, through the miracle of technology and a VERY crowd-noise-heavy bootleg, they transport themselves back to December 2nd, 2000 (two days before Pat's 17th birthday -- the very EDGE of 17...) to discuss this epic, four-plus hour finale of the band as we knew it. Your hosts discuss their highlights, Frank rants about talking during songs at concerts (again... and again and AGAIN), Pat confesses to robbing Sonic Youth blind of their precious jewels outside an empty parking garage, rare public political slams and Billy's competitive drive that possibly makes him the Michael Jordan of Alternative Rock. All that plus Frank works through his Daddy issues discussing the involvement of William Corgan, Sr. in this historic set (and how Rick Nielsen plays the proud papa well).

Imagine you're riding the rail watching your favorite band say "goodbye," contemplating throwing your dirty undies at Billy... and enjoy!

You can listen to the semi-complete bootleg here (all copies of the show cut off the end of Silverf*ck)

08 Apr 2022JIMMY CHAMBERLIN COMPLEX: LIFE BEGINS AGAIN01:37:08

We've veered off into solo project territory again today with the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex and their 2005 alterna-jazz-rock-fusion album, "Life Begins Again." More Fugazi than Dave Brubeck, more Slint grooves than brass sections, it was a "jazz" album we weren't ready for at the time but (as full-grown GENRE-DEFYING adults) we really f**king dig now.

First off: Jimmy's cookin’ it up so fast, flippin' sonic flapjacks in flavors we hadn't quite tasted before giving this album a proper listen. We heap praise on the incredible vocal stylings of Catherine Wheel's Rob Dickinson... but Frank’s got murder on the mind when thinking of a Catherine Wheel/Smashing Pumpkins bill. All that plus the "Set the Ray to Jerry"-esque dreaminess of the Billy Corgan-sung "Loki Cat," the unfortunate feeling of a song becoming a late-night stress loop, and the benefits of having a Righteous Brother as a godfather.

But what we really want to know is: If Jimmy-baby's laying organ tracks on this bad boy... where was Ignoffo’s invite?!

11 Dec 2024ATUM w/ JUSTIN from THE DEEP DIVE04:45:55

Our capsule has returned from space exile and our AI carnival robot infused with our pure essence is up and running! That’s right, the ‘kast is back with an album deep dive!

On May 5th, 2023, The Smashing Pumpkins released a sprawling 33-song rock opera entitled “ATUM”; The third concept album in the trilogy of Zero (Mellon Collie) / Glass (Machina) and Shiny (current). Songs debuted weekly for 7 months leading up to the album’s release on Billy Corgan’s “Thirty-three Podcast” along with commentary explaining the epic rock opera story.

Justin from The Deep Dive Channel (from our CYR episode) returns to guest-host and to talk ATUM track by track in glorious nerdy Pumpkin detail.

In this almost 5 hour episode (we had a lot to say), we discuss the deep layers and easter eggs in the production, supposed “cancel culture”, the ethics of AI, ATUM’s connection to Corgan’s solo albums, Neil Young and Metallica nods, glorious chorus soaked guitars and bass and making a genuine and enthusiastic case for “Hooray!”

Like many Pumpkins albums, it’s an audio treat that deserves a proper listen front to back with a good pair of headphones.

“It ain’t right” if you skip this episode of The Smashing Pumkast!

(and yes- we will cover Zodeon at Crystal Hall once it gets a proper release)

03 Jul 2022BONUS: MONE'T HA-SIDI 01:00:21

It's been a while, but it's a new listener profile and today Frank talks to a one-of-a-kind Pumpkins fan...

Hairstylist by Day, Burlesque by Night, Activist ALL the time...the Smashing Pumpkin of Bump & Grind...Mone't Ha-Sidi!

Frank and Mone't chat about the highs and lows of being a Black Woman in Pumpkin fandom, making Pumpkins friends for life, ticket-buying etiquette, the lack of love for Josh Groban at a Bridge School Benefit show (the band DID notice) and how unfair it is that the Pumpkins don’t get the proper accolades they deserve as some bands do.

26 Oct 2020BONUS: Mellon Collie/Machina Double Album Sequel Announcement and More! 00:34:34

Frank & Pat give their super quick thoughts on the recent news of a Mellon Collie/Machina Double Album Sequel, the proposed high concept Mellon Collie era themed tour and the status of the Machina reissue. We also discuss Billy's announcement of this news and how his ominous tone at the beginning made us nervous. We briefly discuss the Zoom interview with Daniel P. Carter,  we give props to Papa Jimmy killin' it in interviews and our thoughts on The Smashing Pumpkins: The Characters, The Creation, The Concept.

We're just gabbin' some quick empty junk thoughts. Enjoy!

02 Jun 2021BONUS: Gish-Aversary at ZuZu's (w/ Field Correspondent Pamela Fisher!) 01:08:05

Happy Gish-aversary, Pumpkinheads! This past weekend Billy and Jimmy celebrated 30 years of Gish with a live listening party/Q&A at the rockin-est tea house in America, Madame ZuZu's. Though your hosts couldn't physically attend, we were all over the livestream and are here to share our thoughts on what we loved about this special event. Craving some first-hand reporting from someone who was there in person? Pumpkast Field Correspondent Pamela Fisher (aka polkadotpam) was kind enough to "spill the tea" with her fist-hand account! Lots of great stuff to talk about including the announcement of the first archive release, "Live in Japan 1992." We're going crazy... buying all this new merch!

04 Jul 2022ZEITGEIST INTRO & HISTORY w/ THE DISCOGRAPHERS01:50:57

"ZEITGEIST SUMMER" is here, and it's a scorcher! Before Frank and Pat do their deep dive into the 16-track "complete" (all variants merged) version of Zeitgeist, we’re setting the scene and sharing some important background on this momentous, polarizing, rebooted period in SP history. Pat takes some time this week to handle some family stuff back home, but not before sharing his earliest memories of Zeitgeist, an album that carried his young ass from Buffalo to the Big Apple. Back at Pumpkast HQ, Frank is joined by Brian Matthews and Tyler Cardwell of The Discographers podcast, who were kind enough to help introduce the album and share some factual and personal history about it... along with a little "Gossamer" praise for good measure.

Call up Paris Hilton on your Blackberry Razr, slather on that sunscreen and join Lady Liberty for a dip in our rising oceans 'cause Zeitgeist Summer has officially begun! Come on, let's GO!

13 Jan 2021The End is the Beginning Is The End / The Beginning is the End is the Beginning / The Ether's Tragic / The Guns of Love Disastrous 01:32:00

Happy New Year, Pumpkinheads! In honor of something no one's been able to do in forever, we kick off 2021 with the first-ever "Pumpkast Goes To The Movies!" Grab your popcorn and nippled Bat-Suits because we're talkin' the underrated Pumpkin gems from the soundtrack to 1997's Batman & Robin (plus single b-sides & demos). Frank and Pat discuss the bridge between Mellon Collie and Adore and how the seeds of CYR may have been sprouting even back then. We also bat-gab about the EITBITE music video, some other tracks on the soundtrack, Mr. Freeze's "cool" puns and a secret collab between Billy and Trent Reznor that sounds like the B-52s? All that plus Electronica's 90's rise, Billy viewing Missy Elliot and Wu-Tang as the future of music and the art of still being stoked on the Pumpkins even when your friends jump ship. Even Howard the Duck peeks his beak in for a second. Its 2021! Go as Joe, Bat-heads! Follow us on the socials: Instagram: @smashingpumpkast Twitter: @PumpkinsPodcast Please rate and review us!

31 Aug 2022F.O.L / SUPERCHRIST / G.L.O.W. and More01:19:49

Zeitgeist Summer burns on as we cover even more Zeitgeist-era goodies. Today on the 'kast we discuss the tracks "F.O.L", "Superchrist", "G.L.O.W.", "Strength In Numbers", "I Don't Mind", "As Rome Burns" and "The March Hare", posing the questions: What exactly is selling out these days? Is "Superchrist" Christian Rock that actually rocks? Do some of these tracks hint at the heavy-psych-jam Pumpkins album that never was? Does it make a difference to have an outside producer? Is "The March Hare" the other side of the "Suffer" LSD trip? Do you need a safeword to listen to "As Rome Burns"?

And, IS there such a thing as "Toxic Positivity?” One thing is certain, BC/JC keep the band’s rock muscles toned and tanned with this little island of misfit tracks.

Come on and feel our love... for these songs!

Our very first return guest, Sierra Swan, is back on the ‘kast to discuss her new EP “Tangerines" (out early on Bandcamp and everywhere else on May 17th)! We inevitably talk Prince, parenting and the secretly-jacked genius of Danny Elfman, as well as the process of writing and recording the new EP, which includes the track "Peach" written by Billy Corgan. Sierra also gives Billy credit for reaching out to his fans about mental health on his Instagram -- or as she calls it, "Billy TV" -- and even teases some upcoming projects (solo and with the Corganator). 28 Jan 2022DJALI ZWAN: 'SPUN' SOUNDTRACK w/ Matt Billington01:43:49

It's the Djali Zwan album (and official movie soundtrack) that could've been! Today on the 'kast we're talkin' the unreleased, technically unofficial soundtrack to the 2002 Jonas Åkerlund film, Spun, which consists primarily of an impressive collection of original and cover songs performed by the Djali Zwan.

Joining us to talk about these tracks and the film is Matt Billington (Phantom Handshakes, Holy Tunics). We discuss  how this could be a "White Sandman" sister album to the dark "Adore," dust bowl metal covers, and how "Love is a Battlefield" almost sounds like a Billy original.

We also ask the questions: Did the CIA secretly collaborate with German band Scorpions to expedite the tearing down of the Berlin Wall? Are the distracting skips in "Jesus, I" intentional (they made sense when Frank took an edible)? And what was the vocal inspiration behind the cover of "Always"? All we know is that it's the return of Sexy Billy, baby!

All that plus we confirm that Billy's Zwan-era nom-de-plume, Billie Burke, IS in reference to the actress Billie Burke, who played Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of OZ

More movie cameos of Billy in wigs, please. SPUN!

This one deserved its own episode because we're breaking down every single clip included on the riff boneyard known as "Pastichio Medley."  We also discuss being part of the Pepsi generation, Sharpie clothing and the unsung genius of Corgan's proficient guitar licks (and how the Guitar God himself, Eddie Van Halen, blessed him). All that plus Mark McGrath in Spades and Chris Gaines' possible connection to the Zero character.

02 Mar 2022ZWAN: ODDZ 'N' ENDZ01:38:40

Zwan Zeason is almost over, and today we're excited to present a very special episode covering some key, remaining "Oddz 'N' Endz" from Zwan's unofficial, unreleased catalogue. We had almost 50 songs to chose from! Needless to say, we were overwhelmed and turned to our Patreon members and social media followers to help us narrow it down (you're the best, Pumpkinheads!). We tallied the votes, crunched the numbers and are covering the TOP 13 "oddz 'n' endz" tracks by the mighty Zwan. It's a great batch of Zwan gems that may be new to some of you!

Join us as we delve into the hard-rock-sleaze-prog-metal that is "Spilled Milk," marvel at the "Lost Boys" mystique of "Riverview," and come at you with a seriously hot take: Is Pavement a one-hit-wonder band? All that plus our utopian vision of Corgan and Malkmus burying the hatchet (with the help of The Boss and Sheila E. at Coachella 2024), the art of ruining an intimate show with an ill-timed chair squeak, Stumbleine’s sister track and of course... The Cure.

08 Dec 2021ZWAN: Intro/History + The Glass House Debut Show (11-16-2001)01:48:12

Zeason's Greetings! We're kicking off Zwan Zeason with a lil' introduction to the band and its history, and then cover their "first official, ticketed show," which took place at The Glass House in Pomona, CA on November 16th, 2001 (listen to it HERE).

We of course get right into the impressive musical pedigrees of each individual band member, our personal connections to their various pre- and post-Zwan projects, and recall how we felt when it all came together to form ZWAN (albeit still a Pre-Paz Zwan). We also define the meaning of "Cool Jesus" music, debate the merits of Zwan Live vs. Zwan Recorded, and agree that "Chrysanthemum" would have been a killer single.

All that plus the big questions: How glorious is "Glorious"? What would the world be like if Zwan had stuck around? How great would an official SP/Corgan lyric site be? And who wants some "Tuesday Wine"? All in all, your hosts found this show to be a strong statement of an official debut by the band. Seriously, you have to hear the live shows to get the FULL context of Zwan. Ziz the Zeason, after all!

05 Apr 2023MONUMENTS TO AN ELEGY w/ STEPHEN PATRICK ZAPATA-KELLY01:39:29

And then there were two. With the departure of Mike Byrne and Nicole Fiorentino, Corgan led the charge with guitarist Jeff Schroeder to make 2014's Monuments To An Elegy. An album with nods to its rock past as well as the Pumpkins' synthy future. Joining Frank as guest co-host to do a track-by-track breakdown of this album is former guest of the 'kast, Stephen Patrick Zapata-Kelly!

Down a drummer, Corgan & Schroeder turned to Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee for an assist to achieve the bombastic and skilled attack needed to match the energy of the songs (as well as Rage Against The Machine's Brad Wilk on drums and The Killer's Mark Stoermer on bass for live shows).

As the Teargarden project aspirations faded away (and with the subsequent abandonment of the Day For Night album), the future of the Pumpkins was looking dire once again. Luckily, time has shown that the Pumpkins are still going strong and with hindsight, a revisit of Monuments yields great rewards. Especially for fans who may not love the sounds of CYR or Atum (even though we get some glances in a few of Monuments' tracks).

Ultimately, Monuments is an album that Stephen and Frank agree is "like a good slice of pizza".

Lover, you're strange if you miss this episode!

07 Apr 2021ADORE (Part 2)01:55:25

In this second (and final) installment of our two-part coverage of "Adore," we go through A DOOR and ask the questions: Do Dusty and Pistol Pete live in the same world as "Ramona"?! Is "Shame" a secret sock hop song that would make a great pop-punk cover?! And did "Blank Page" throw a seed into the future, later blossoming as "Birch Grove"?! We also discuss how Cruel Intentions was the Moody Teen's American Pie, how "prettily" the epic "For Martha" unfolds, and an empowered, "owning-it" view of "Annie-Dog." We then delve into what WandaVision and Billy have in common and, believe it or not, The Cure comes up again. All that plus our quick thoughts on the Japanese Bonus track (and "Ava Adore" b-side) "Once In A While" and the infamous, omitted, Rick Rubin-produced track, "Let Me Give The World To You."

15 Feb 2023Oceania Intro & History w/ Kim Rosas01:25:01

Before we dive in for the track-by-track breakdown of Oceania, we take some time to cover the history of the album and this particular era of the Pumpkins.

Joining Frank as guest co-host this episode is previous Pumpkast roundtable guest and dedicated Pumpkinhead Kim Rosas! In addition to covering the history of the Oceania era, Frank & Kim discuss their Pumpkin fandom around 2012 (and now), what it was like waiting for the song you wanted to listen to/record on the radio in the 90s, an unusual gymnasium SP show at the Florida State Fair and how the music of Billy/SP feels like fate and why we're devout members of the Church of Pumpkins (Churchkins?).

Plus, we give mad props to the impossible task Mike Byrne found himself in and throw in some much-deserved love and praise for bassist Nicole Fiorentino and guitarist Jeff  Schroeder.

It's a special and unique era for the Pumpkins that over time (as usual) finally got the love and recognition it deserves.

04 Jul 2024PATREON UNLOCKED: Eurockéennes Festival 7-4-1997 w/ Rob Tedesco01:55:33

In celebration of the 4th, we're freeing this episode from the tyranny of Patreon! But for real, we thought it would be fitting since the performance we discuss is from July 4th, 1997. Originally released on our Patreon in January 2023. Enjoy!

"Patreon member Rob Tedesco cashes in his Adore reward and chose to talk about the incredible Smashing Pumpkins performance at the 1997 Eurockéennes Festival! You can watch the performance HERE!

This show finds the band in prime form after the setbacks and tragedy of the previous year. Matt Walker executes with precision and the band decimates the other top acts of the festival (with some smiles and laughs thrown in for good measure)!

Also...we recorded this episode before the Zwan revelations on the 33 pod, so the Zwan talk towards the end was before we knew about the reissue being worked on."

19 Feb 2021EYE / LOST HIGHWAY SOUNDTRACK (w/ Special Appearance From Pod Like A Hole Podcast)01:38:10

Today on the 'kast we turn our eyes (and ears) to the Smashing Pumpkins' (or just Billy?) track "EYE" from the Trent Reznor-produced soundtrack to the 1997 David Lynch film, Lost Highway. We delve into the surprisingly Shaquille O'Neal-based origins of "Eye," Lynch's initial rejection of "Tear," and give our two cents on the film and the rest of the twisted tunes from the soundtrack. Along the way, we'll tell tales of meeting Lou Reed while high on weed cookies, ponder why This Mortal Coil's gorgeous "Song to the Siren" doesn't make the final soundtrack and ask the big question: Is Hocus Pocus a good movie or a GREAT movie? All that plus our pals at the Nine Inch Nails/David Bowie-centric podcast Pod Like A Hole drop in to give their thoughts on "Eye." Is it any wonder we can't sleep? We're too excited for you to listen to this episode!

17 Feb 2023OCEANIA02:20:25

Yod He Vau He Om, Pumpkinheads! Today on the 'kast, we cover the critically acclaimed, post-reformation fan-favorite album OCEANIA! An album so special, Frank and Pat just had to assemble in person at Pumpkast HQ to dive head first into its briny depths.

Frank and Pat discuss "deep" concepts like the "God umbrella," the beautiful truth of the lyric, "everything I want is free," and the spiritual connection "Pale Horse" has to "Adore." All that plus a possible nod to the Italian horror classic "Suspiria" and some speculation as to exactly what kind of "Special K" we're talking about on "The Celestials" (wouldn't be the first time Billy made reference to a beloved breakfast food – Pop Tarts, anyone?).

We also thoroughly sing the praises of this incarnation of the band, which included Jeff "The Shredder" Schroeder, Mike Byrne's undeniable drum chops and the incredible bass contributions and backing vocals of Nicole Fiorentino.

We hope you love this episode "101 percent"!

11 Apr 2022JEFF SCHROEDER01:24:57

Hard to believe but today marks the SECOND ANNIVERSARY of the official launch of The Smashing Pumpkast! We could think of no better way to mark the occasion than with our brand new interview with the phenomenal Jeff Schroeder

Jeff sits down with us to discuss everything from his unique musical contributions to The Smashing Pumpkins to the benefits of having a guitar teacher with a vast musical palette (and a No-Wave band). We also talk about the Importance of mental health and Jeff's work with the Continuance Foundation (https://www.thecontinuancefoundation.com), which Mellon Collie-era songs he'd 'Love' to play live and the Herculean effort that is working on a 33-song concept album remotely during a pandemic.

We also ask Jeff about his underrated but influential early band "The Lassie Foundation" and how it feels to see people revisit and reassess moments in the SP catalog years later. He's more than a shredder, he's a stone-cold artist and real gentleman. We had such a great time chatting with him. Thanks, Jeff.

Thanks so much to everyone who's supported us over the past two years! MORE TO COME!

On June 2nd, 2023, Adore turned 25. It's a wonderful conversation that will continue into a bonus episode where Corrine was kind enough to answer some listener questions. Look out for that bonus episode soon!

Happy 25th Anniversary, Adore!

24 Oct 2020Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: Twilight to Starlight02:26:24

Just in time for the 25th Anniversary of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Frank & Pat delve into Disc 2: "Twilight to Starlight"! This time they're joined by comedian, actor, producer, author and good friend,  DC Pierson (Stay for Dinner, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), who discusses his history with and rediscovery of the tracks off of this iconic blue CD. We go deep on songs that are scary but rule, the Mountain Dew rush of "1979," and Regis & Kathie Lee inspiring "Thirty-Three."  All that plus songs tailor-made for Chino of the Deftones, Gene Shalit lateral segues... and is the "King of the Horseflies" actually Trent Reznor?

If Siamese Dream were an epic movie, Mellon Collie would be a majestic Broadway play. Billy Babe-Ruths this concept and knocks it out of the park with "Twilight to Starlight," capping off a stellar double-album that became an instant classic. Coil this 'kast 'round your bumblebee ears!
