When things go really wrong.

Today, Rachel, Lucy and Sarah discuss a case where the local authority took parents to court for interfering ‘in a combative way’ in relation to the care package for their child.

Tough content as we try to hold onto the fact that every person involved with our families -commissioners, young people, parents, practitioners- is human.

Oh, and an update on Mousegate.

Trigger warning: animals were harmed during the recording of this episode.

Join Rachel, Lucy* and Sarah for Episode 9 of The Skies We’re Under.

(*In her Lucy and Yak boob dungarees)

Wrapping up our theme on families, they reflect on all our episodes and what they have learned along the way. Top musings include;

  • How our expectations can be unfair as well as unrealistic
  • Imagined realities are a potent draw to disappointment
  • Coping mechanisms can evolve over time and may need re-evaluation
  • It's okay to feel hurt, but we can choose our responses
  • Knowing who we are, communication and boundaries are the heart of good family dynamics

After a half term Raincheck we will be back thinking about health and well-being.

29 Mar 2023I just want to eat chocolate, watch a movie and cry ... | S2 | E700:54:38
Are you and your partner on the same emotional wavelength when it comes to processing change or caring responsibilities?   Are one of you more practical and the other emotional? Does it wind you up at all?   Can caring and logistics ever be shared out equally?

Kenny and Tutu Popoola are husband and wife founders of Black Special Needs Parents (BSNP). BSNP provides a haven for black parents of children living with disabilities to express themselves and get the support they need to thrive while raising their children. It also serves as a great source of information as well as a signposting service to resources.

Having been brought up in Nigeria, Kenny and Tutu are now raising two children in the UK, one with complex disabilities. Kenny was slightly outnumbered during our chat but we covered how Dads are often underrepresented and women are more advanced – Kenny actually said it himself.

We unpick a bit of the typical male and female response to things and discuss the sense of joy (and loss) when a child develops typically and reaches milestones which seem effortless.

It’s a really comforting conversation which raises some important differences brought about by culture, privilege and faith, but also many similarities in our shared complex emotions.

Check out their brilliant website https://www.bsnpsn.org/ for more information or follow @blackspecialneedsparentsuk. The church with SEN provision that Kenny and Tutu are part of is https://citygates.london/get-connected/special-needs/

12 Apr 2023Stories About Autism | S2 | E900:42:42

James Hunt is the single dad of two autistic boys and the curator of Stories About Autism. With hundreds of thousands of followers across social media, James has created an amazing community – a community, he says, that help him just as much his stories help others.

In this conversation we delve into:

  • Autism, adaptation and acceptance
  • Changing relationships and siblings
  • Co-parenting well and being a single parent
  • Parent's aging and being a sandwich carer (which sadly has nothing to do with cheese & pickle)

You can find James across social media as Stories About Autism and on his website www.storiesaboutautism.com. All enquiries (to give him a book deal) can be emailed to james@storiesaboutautism.com

18 Sep 2024Those Dads Look Like Me | S4 | E400:51:57

Join Rachel for Episode 4 of The Skies We’re Under podcast, this week we’ve swapped out two Mum’s in exchange for two Dads (Brendan Jones and Tim Wright)  - to get a different perspective on life as a parent of a disabled child.

Whilst they cover many well trodden paths: the pain that can come with comparison, rubbish message delivery and the clanger of ‘special children get special parents’ they illustrate a slightly different story.

Brendan and Tim focus on the difficulties of adjusting the life you had imagined, to the life you have whilst dealing with the traditional roles that Fathers often (but not always) fulfil. From focussing on practical support, to ‘making up’ on the weekends, they consider the ways that stereotypically male ways of coping, can both help, and hinder.

There is plenty of reflection on finding the right communities of support around us, including the fantastic charity 'Unique', to how to talk to those who ‘get it’ and those who don’t, and just how sometimes you need to just get away from it all.

We’d love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly.

11 Dec 2024Privilege of Paid Work with Sharon Foxwell and Leisa Millar - Part 1 | S4 | E1500:55:23

The data on female parent carers, shows paid work becomes an unattainable privilege as many have to leave the workforce.  Today Rachel, Sarah and Lucy for Episode 15 of The Skies We’re Under are Sharon Foxwell and Leisa Miller, talking about the role that paid work plays in our wellbeing and how often women and workplaces are missing out.

They chat about:

  • the benefits of working
  • how work shapes the way we see ourselves and others see us
  • how work helps to preserve another version of ourselves beyond the ‘every-day Job-ness’ of being a parent
  • barriers that parents (especially mothers) face in the workplace
  • and the systems Sharon and Leisa to maintain the juggle

In addition, Lucy has had the world’s worst ‘pizza’, and Sarah is still reeling from ‘shouty corridor-conversations’.

You can hear more from Leisa on the SEN Mums Career Club.

30 Mar 2022Self-care: Insta v Reality | S1 | E800:49:50

This week on the podcast we are talking all things self-care. But obviously it’s more convoluted than that and covers Sarah’s impression of Edward scissor hands, Lucy’s inappropriate massage experience and our lives being the solar system around our children with disabilities.

Sometimes when everything is happening, the Instagram version of self-care is a pipe dream and sometimes self-care is plain uncomfortable and hard. Importantly though we realise that to really look after our own well-being and care for self, first we need to know who our self is and what she/he needs. Maybe it is more about cutting back than adding more - pruning rather than planting

Welcome to a TSWU Raincheck. While you wait for new content, here is a short extract from earlier episodes to tide you over.

This week hope. What it is and what it isn’t

As parents we have pivoted and adjusted in so many ways. Our view of the future, ourselves, our family. It seems it is even possible to track some of those changes on the podcast. This week we have a rain check looking how our perspective on hope changes.

Extracts are from:

Season 1 Episode 3; and

Season 3 Episode 11

01 Mar 2023Hijacked by Parenthood | S2 | E300:56:26

Rachel talks to Lucy and Sarah about how being the parents of people with complex needs has taken over – well ... everything. How we have changed and transitioned through seasons of our life and our child’s life. We cover;

  • The emotional phases we go through – rage, resignation and resolve.
  • Deputyship and power of attorney – who needs it and why?
  • Realising there isn’t such a thing as ‘it’ll be easier when...’
  • How none of us is Mother Teresa incarnate.
  • One of our biggest roles as parents is to enable our children to have fun and feel safe without us.

We talk about how we might try and shift the idea of motherhood being at its best when we are frantically doing everything for our children, to one where we celebrate and share stories of our children loving life without us. #FunWithoutMum

21 Feb 2024Superhormonal Not Superhuman | S3 | E200:29:15

Join Lucy and Rachel on Episode 2 of 'The Skies We’re Under' podcast as they ride the waves of frustration, rage, broken systems, unhelpful comments and hormonal imbalance on the good ship HTS Rifton.

Rachel talks about continence systems and products (Uribag, Rifton) and the continued challenges of transitioning from Childrens' to Adult Services

Lucy and Rachel reflect that as awesome as we are, we are not Superhuman, and that the decisions we’re forced to make and the comments we hear build an unhelpful myth of resilience.

HRT patches are praised for helping navigate the stormy waters, and also, helpfully, not killing your families… Menopause

  • An extract from our first conversation with the delightful Jo Grace - from Episode 3 - Trust Your Instinct with Joanna Grace (sensory projects)

06 Apr 2022Food Glorious Food - PEGs and alternative feeding | S1 | E900:59:10

This week on the podcast we are talking about one of our favourite things - food. For each of our stories though, the way we fed our complex children was quite different. We faced challenges, learned new skills and each time – found an alternative way to keeping our children well fed. Unsurprisingly we continue the irreverent humour and chit chat about:

  • Breast feeding
  • Enteral feeding (via tubes into nose, mouth or stomach)
  • Chemotherapy
  • The trauma of the health visitor weigh-in clinics
  • Being told your child needs to be nil-by-mouth
  • Sensory issues

The statistics we discuss are for the UK and we need to give a trigger warning that in telling our stories we discuss traumatic birth and childhood cancer.

22 Jan 2025Traumatised by services? with Dr Ana Aiello | S4 | E2000:55:41

Research is suggesting the action and inaction of services can cause trauma to parents and caregivers. Systems generated trauma is an emerging term in academia but we suspect many parent carers and practitioners will understand what it means - be able to describe a time they have experienced or witnessed it.

In a world where trauma informed practice is heralded as the right way to work, systems and organisations need to also be aware that their own policies, procedures, actions and inactions may in fact be the very source and cause of trauma for parent carers.

The Skies We’re Under podcast is delighted to welcome expert Dr Ana Aiello. A researcher and academic who specialises in parent carer blame and is also a sibling. She walks us gently through;

  • institutionalised parent carer blame
  • its impact it has on Fabricated Induced Illness (FII) guidance
  • emerging research on systems generated trauma

We hear some stark truths which Lucy and Rachel discuss alongside a general rant about the potential for someone to do a poo just as you are rushing out the door (husband/toddler - delete as appropriate)

If you want to dig deeper into Dr Aiello and Dr Clements work:

Introducing The Skies We're Under podcast launching on 2nd February 2022

05 Mar 2025Getting Intimate with Polly Hazlewood | S4 | E2500:55:38

We’re getting intimate with Polly Hazlewood from the ‘Dirty Mother Pukka’ podcast which she co-presents with Anna Whitehouse - bringing Feminism with a side - helping of filth.

Rachel talks to Polly about her experiences as a mother to twins with a rare genetic condition, as well as exploring her knowledge and experience as a somatic sexologist (don’t worry we explain it all!) It’s all about connecting with yourself, to enable you to better connect with others, and have more intimate and positive relationships.

Sarah and Lucy also cover the perils of not being able to polish a turd, and on a related theme, all the places you can find poo (quite a few if you are raising a puppy and a toddler at the same time.)

You can listen to Polly and Anna on Dirty Mother Pukka

08 Mar 2023A Nodding Dog to the System | S2 | E400:50:03

This great interview with Tracey Huggins looks at;

  • Mental health (ours not our children’s)
  • Her sex life (that bit’s quite quick)
  • Being a nodding dog to the system
  • Having a child who doesn’t have a diagnosis.

You can find out about all things Tracey at @SENDaccordingtome and www.sendworldaccordingtome.co.uk She has stacks of useful information about all the practitioners who support families of children with disabilities. If you’re a parent new to this gig, it’s a helpful resource.

16 Mar 2022Guilt with a side helping of Guilt | S1 | E600:35:59

This week Rachel, Sarah and Lucy discuss the big ol’ topic of guilt in all its formats. Mum guilt. Carer guilt. All the guilt. Who knew parents of disabled children felt guilty? Shocker. In fact, we started talking and realised we have waaaay too much to say on the topic, so this is the first of a two parter. You’re welcome.

We try and untangle guilt versus shame, and think about how our personalities and lived experiences might shape our perception and experiences of guilt. Spoiler alert: Rach feels guilty for sending her son to school in costume on the wrong day. Lucy thinks it’s hilarious.

As ever- smiles, banter, and real authentic life stuff.

If you like our podcast, it would make a huge difference if you could rate, review and follow wherever you get your podcasts. And please feel free to join in the conversation, sending your questions, thoughts and comments to TSWUpodcast@gmail.com

06 Nov 2024F-words - but not as we know it! | S4 | E1000:48:27

It is so easy, as a parent, to get lost in the therapies, to-do lists (and as we’ve said before) become a nodding dog to the system. This week on the podcast we talk to Lucy Charles and Arul Hamill, therapists from New Zealand who are helping parents to focus on what matters most to them and their family’s using the f-words wheel of life.

Rather than stander, walker, lying support and sensory therapy, what about fun, fitness, family, future and function - at home and in the community?

From celebrating the small wins and throwing a birthday party for a poo, this episode is everything a parent needs to hear when they are swimming in the sea of performance, professionals and prior expectations. You can find the f-words and wheel of life here, and  more about Lucy and Arul here and here.

11 May 2022Goldfish Bowl or Gladiator Ring | S1 | E1400:39:49

Join Rachel, Sarah and Lucy as they continue to unpick notions of battle language and tribalism among parents and professionals.

The labels of ‘unreasonable’ and ‘difficult’ parents, and the lack of humanity when we view professionals purely as part of the system that can be so very challenging.

Oh, and on an entirely unrelated note, Lucy shares her Mousegate story. Actual mouse. In actual house.

Grab a cuppa and come join us.

15 Jun 2022“Trust me” | S1 | E1801:00:13

This episode of The Skies We’re Under podcast Lucy, Rachel and Sarah follow on from last week's topic of trust. They talk about we discover is:

  • Trust is hard
  • Trusting takes work on both sides
  • Trusting someone means being vulnerable
  • The system which cares for our children is often not trusting nor trustworthy, despite the best efforts of those working within it.
  • Trust is necessary as the parent of a person with disabilities as trust is necessary when we need others to do something we cannot do alone.
  • “Don’t put that in your mouth!” poetry competition chosen entry for this week.

We refer to

The thin book of Trust by Charles Feltman

Atlas of the heart by Brene Brown

03 Mar 2022“How to get her off” and Other Relationship Advice | S1 | E500:52:24

In this week’s podcast Rachel, Sarah and Lucy are supposed to be talking about relationships but somehow it includes:

  • Confession of an optimistic parent
  • EHCPs wormholes
  • Sex Ed
  • ‘Would you believe?’ the scrutiny of parents giving their child blended diets
  • How our relationship with ourselves, partners and others have changed

In response to a question from a listener we talk about Em and friends cards

https://emandfriends.com/

Because we are three parents doing this in our own time whilst juggling our work, families and children with complex needs, we are going to have to skip a week.

The podcast will be back in 2 weeks when we will be talking about grief.

13 Apr 2022F**king Epilepsy | S1 | E1000:52:16

Sarah, Rachel and Lucy open up and talk all things epilepsy in today’s podcast. There are no fluffy unicorns or rose-tinted glasses here. We’re real, raw and talking about epilepsy from a parent perspective.

Witnessing it, treating it and living on the brink of when it might strike again. So essentially this episode should just be one big trigger warning. But if you might find it helpful to know you are not treading the epilepsy tightrope alone – listen in as we swear and rant about:

  • Different types of seizure
  • Diagnosis
  • Monitoring epilepsy
  • SUDEP (Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy)
  • Medications and other treatments
  • Making YouTube films of different seizure types

Trigger warning we talk all about Epilepsy and it is traumatic to witness. This conversation includes Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

 Useful and reputable information

All about epilepsy from NHS

Sami alert (as talked about by Lucy)

SUDEP action

Children epilepsy charity

Different epilepsy monitoring options highlighted in epilepsy UK

13 Nov 2024What About Us? With Hayley Charlesworth | S4 | E1100:41:08

Content warning - this episode includes discussions around birth trauma, if this won’t be helpful for you to listen to, please choose another episode to listen to.

Join Rachel and Lucy, in conversation with Hayley Charlesworth from Harry’s Pals.

They think back to the moment you get life changing news about your child: when all the focus is on all the things that are wrong or broken,  and what they’ll need to do for your child as a result, and stop there. In a world where there is no emotional support provided for parents to navigate the rollercoaster that they’ve just got onto, Hayley has established Harry’s Pals to help fill this gap.

We also discuss, ‘Is there a good way to break bad news?’ and we meet Lucy’s Resident Rat friend.

You can find out more about Harry’s Pals here.

21 Dec 2022So, this is Christmas | S2 | E100:43:50

In this Christmas episode, we discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of Christmas. We talk the lead up, the lights, the planning, the nativities and the REALITY of Christmas Day, as well as

·      Is Christmas a holiday / break?

·      The experience of a SEN school Christmas / nativity - the carnage, the hilarity, the cuteness and the (in)appropriateness.

·      The emotional overload of the festive season.

·      Christmas presents – buying gifts for a child with complex needs and the overwhelming multitude of people who support them

·      Top tips for gifting including recycling, regifting, wish lists and whether it’s acceptable to buy children everyday essentials.

At a time when expectations of joy and magic are so high, what we often overlook is that reality and lived experience don’t change. Rachel, Sarah and Lucy discuss the importance of keeping in mind who Christmas is for and therefore how best to manage expectations and keep them realistic.

Join Rachel, Sarah and Lucy for Part One of our conversation with the absolutely amazing Daisy, Ocean and Tom, the super siblings who ‘belong to’ Sarah and Lucy.

In addition to reflecting on how blooming awesome their kids are, (because they really are) the team also share more about the usual drama free lives they lead. From visits to documentary-meriting Accident and Emergency departments to dashes across Europe to breaking your foot when you are dancing in your bedroom.

20 Nov 2024Normative Supremacy with Tourettes Hero Jess Thom | S4 | E1200:50:02

Rachel and Sarah are joined by the fan-blooming-tastic Jess Thom to talk all things Inclusive Play.

Jess talks about her life, and how she has turned her tics into a source of imaginative creativity by founding Tourettes Hero and starting the Rebel Play movement.

A brilliant, funny, reflective conversation, where Rachel and Jess consider how we ensure we don’t let ableist ideas shrink our world and impact the self-image and well-being of our disabled children. As parents of disabled children, listening to disabled adults is a vital part to our own learning and evolution.

We’re so lucky to have been able to talk to Jess, not least because she tells us her actual favourite biscuits (not just her ‘show’ favourite biscuits!)

Sarah also has the sniffles, and for once it’s Rachel sharing laundry tips…

20 Apr 2022Help? No, I’m Fine | S1 | E1100:53:06

Sarah, Rachel and Lucy laugh, talk and rant a bit about parenting children with disabilities, in particular asking for and getting help. We confess to thinking none of us need it but actually acknowledging we all do. There is a confession of the pessary kind and if you do not laugh during this episode – you might need to be checked out by a doctor.

 We cover:

  • Helpful help
  • Unhelpful help
  • The relationship between helping and being helped
  • And how asking for help isn’t weakness but true connection and the best part of human-ing

19 Mar 2025Friendships - A Mixtape | S4 | E2700:36:14

We get by with a little help from our friends…This week’s episode of The Skies We’re Under we’ve gone right back to the 1980s and made our very own mixtape!

In our series on community and  connection we turn focusing on our friendships. The people who are a shoulder to cry on, a partner on the dance floor or just the unexpected person who shows up.

We hear from some of our wonderful listeners who left speakpipes recognising and thanking their own friends as well as Lucy Parr chatting to her “shit life off” friend Sarah - (not podcast Sarah). And Jo, who works behind the scenes on the podcast, chats with her friend and neighbour Lyndsey.

It’s all about the love stories of friendship.

We’d love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly.

28 Feb 2023Tree up or Tree down | S2 | E200:45:16

In the second of our festive specials, Rachel, Sarah and Lucy talk about how Christmas for many, far from being magic and nostalgic, can simply become a case of ‘just got to get through it’. How for a lot of parents, we so want to feel one thing but the reality of the many emotions we live with become bigger and bigger as December progresses.

  • Adapting plans and expectations for Christmas – what can be ditched?
  • How to show love and support for a person with complex needs.
  • Feelings of isolation at Christmas.
  • Managing expectations.
  • The contrast of the ‘complex Christmas’.
  • Letting go of emotions.
  • Additional pressures of Christmas.

Christmas is a time where expectations are highlighted and magnified. Having a child with complex needs takes the ability to create your ‘perfect Christmas’ out of your hands.

02 Sep 2022Holidays (Same s**t, different location) | S1 | E2200:56:53

Less support + Less equipment + Less routine + Higher expectations = Holidays

Or as we like to call it, having a different kitchen sink. As ever Rachel, Sarah and Lucy give the slightly sweary warts and all version of life, stresses and loves of parenting a disabled child.

Lucy swears more than normal, spoiler alert (none of us have managed a relaxing summer break yet) and we’re all a bit p****d about all the Instagram spam of leisurely summer family trips away.*

01 Jun 2022Can I really trust anyone? | S1 | E1700:45:29

Sarah and Rachel (sorry no Lucy today) are on The Skies We’re Under podcast today talking about how their stories have changed the way they trust themselves. They also prod the possible implosion of trusting the idea that everything will turn out just fine. It seems trust is earned and carved from time, actions and energy. It can’t be conjured from a job title, role or sense of responsibility. So how do we nurture trusting ourselves.

Also, we cry laughing and pause recording as we pull ourselves together. Thank you so much for listening to The Skies We’re under podcast from whichever of the 34 different countries you are living in.

To submit your own stories, comments, questions or a poem to the “Don’t put that in your mouth” competition, * you can email the podcast at TSWUpodcast@gmail.com or message us @bornatrighttime on Instagram and Facebook.

05 Feb 2025Entering the Gladiator Ring with Elly Chapple and George Julian | S4 | E2201:02:02

The narrative is that as parent carers we often have to fight.

Enter the Gladiator ring: for Elly Chapple this began in 2020 with her daughter fighting for her life in ITU and within weeks she was fighting for her family to stay together.

In this special episode of The Skies We’re Under Podcast, Elly Chapple and George Julian share the unfolding events and human rights case brought on behalf of Ella when her mother Ellie was removed from her home after child protection proceedings began.

This conversation brings together the many facets of trauma families face. It is a real-life example of parent carer trauma, trauma in people with profound disabilities, systems generated trauma and being brought to the brink.

This powerful and vulnerable episode comes with special thanks to Elly and her family for sharing their personal story. Our hope is that by shining a light, lessons can be learned for systems and practitioners so that ultimately children and families are better protected.

You can find out more about Elly here.

You can see her TEDx Talk here.

You can find more about George here.

George can also be found on Bluesky here.

Join Rachel, Lucy and Sarah for Episode 8 of The Skies We’re Under.

This episode we are talking all about divorce. Continuing our theme of families, we have to cover things not working out the way we planned (as it so often does). The episode includes candid conversations about the complexities of family life, relationships, and how the challenges of parenting a disabled child can impact your relationship and perspective on life.

Lucy and Rachel talk to Sarah about her divorce, reflecting on the impact of separation, the resilience of children, and the importance of support systems. The conversation highlights the emotional journey of navigating family dynamics, the balance between personal needs and responsibilities, and the unexpected perks that can come from separation.

26 Jun 2024Finding the Magic When You Don’t Fit with Caro Giles | S3 | E1800:33:05

Join Rachel and Lucy for Episode 18 of The Skies We’re Under podcast.

They are joined by the wonderful Caro Giles who reflects on navigating systems where we don’t fit, home education and finding connection with others in an isolating world.

You can find more of Caro’s writing here:

Rachel and Lucy cover a broad range of themes, the ramifications of being forever ‘on-edge’ (getting videos whilst you’re at a comedy gig), the need to cry, the ways we keep a lid on our feelings, and how we sometimes just need to let it all out.

There’s also lots of reflection collectively on the joy that is connection with others, be that like minded parents, or those around us who don’t live it, but just get it.

We celebrate the joy of books you can pick up and put down (like Caro’s book Twelve Moons) and also podcasts like our own.

Join Rachel for our fourth and final 'Raincheck' of the Summer Holidays. While you wait for new content, here is a short extract from earlier episodes to tide you over.

12 Mar 2025Celebration not Accomodation with Ramandeep Kaur | S4 | E2600:46:02

Happy 100 Episodes of The Skies We’re Under!

At The Skies We’re Under we want our families to be celebrated, not accommodated. In this special episode of the Skies we’re Under we continue to explore our theme of community, and question what happens when inclusivity is eroded, either within our existing communities, or within the disability community itself.

To discuss this important subject, Rachel is joined by the wonderful Ramandeep Kaur. Ramandeep reflects on her own experiences within her ethnic community, how that changed when her son with Down Syndrome was born without the fanfare she had come to expect.

Rachel and Ramandeep cover it all, what does inclusivity actually look like, where do you go when you lose connection with community, what do you do when you don’t see people ‘like your family’ in the places that you go to for connection and support.

It's full of reflection, and hope, and humour. There is also the usual chat from Sarah and Lucy, who are both adamant that all aspects of motherhood should be celebrated.

You can find out more about Ramandeep at her website.

We’d love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly.

08 Jan 2025Parent Carer Trauma with Dr Joanna Griffin | S4 | E1800:52:56

New Year, New Us - or not. The Skies We’re Under is kicking off 2025 with the brilliant Dr. Jo Griffin, a parent carer and counselling psychologist who is going to help us understand why some of this is so flippin' hard even when our children are bloomin brilliant.

Jo covers what trauma is and why trauma is so common in parent carers, what support is needed, and why traditional forms of support may hinder rather than help. Full of support and guidance for parent carers, and advice for practitioners with where to go for resources, and everything we can do to be properly trauma-informed.

Rachel, Lucy and Sarah also reflect on how the themes touch them in their personal and professional lives, and how they can provide more understanding of their own experiences, and also help connect with other parents going through similar stories.

You can find out more about Joanna here.

Affinity Hub resources are available here.

26 Mar 2025AAC and Beyond with Dr. Beth Moulam | S4 | E2800:53:26

The ability to connect with others is a joy. Rachel reflects on the things that support and prevent connection (technical and human!) with the brilliant Dr. Beth Moulam, Paralympian, researcher, advocate and award winning all round super human.

Beth shares her thoughts on the communication tools we all use, and the tools she uses. The challenges she faces (spoiler alert - it’s normally other people), and the joy she finds in creating new connections, and creating community around her, in the breathtaking number of fields she’s involved in.

Rachel, Sarah and Lucy bring updates and reflections, there's news from the Moths, and Lucy broke a TSWU record, by swearing right from the outset - having to bring “all your BLEEPING podcast BEEP to work is not the best way to start the day!
