06 Jun 2022195 | PUFAS Explained with Brandy Searcy00:46:36

Join Angela and guest Brandy Searcy in this episode: PUFAS Explained.

In today’s episode, Angela and Brandy Searcy are talking about cooking oils and oils used for self-massage (Abhyanga) in the context of essential fatty acids. With so much recent controversy around omega-6 and why you should avoid them in your diet, Brandy shares the truth about these fatty acids. Spoiler alert: you need both of them for your health.

Learn more about:
• why omega-3 and omega-6 are both necessary for your health
• which botanical and vegetable oils are rich in each of these & how to use these oils in your diet
• what factors into an oil’s shelf life
• what ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 to target in your diet

Brandy Searcy's a pharmaceutical formulation development scientist who truly discovered Ayurveda in 2020 when she decided to cure Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Having been diagnosed with this autoimmune thyroid condition in 2018, she wasn’t happy with living with Western medicine’s approach to this condition and picked up Dr. Marianne Teitelbaum’s book “Healing the thyroid with Ayurveda.”

Intrigued by many of the connections Dr. Teitelbaum made in this book, specifically the way of looking at your body holistically rather than individual wheels and cogs to be cut and chopped and reassembled whenever one part malfunctioned, Brandy decided to learn more about Ayurveda.

After implementing some of the dinacharya recommendations and her diet (specifically eliminating raw and cold foods), she began to noticing such profound differences in the way she felt she fell head over heels for Ayurveda enrolling in an AHC program while taking courses offered by Dr. Vasant Lad and incorporating Ayurvedic principles into the skincare offered at Rain Organica.

Brandy provides a unique perspective of Ayurveda through the lens of a scientist

Ayurveda Encompassed is a navigation system that combines specific maps and tools to support you in accessing new depths of your innate wisdom so that you learn to flourish in the seas of this new paradigm we’re all sailing in.

20 Sep 2021158 | Ahimsa, Ayurveda, Veganism and the Gray Space00:43:29

Join Angela in this solo episode: Ahimsa, Ayurveda, Veganism and the Gray Space.

This episode comes from countless conversations with yoga students, fellow practitioners, those on social media, in person classes, etc. It's something Angela has been curious about in her own life since beginning to practice Ayurveda 14 years ago, and she has been learning and getting to the root of what the teachings do say. There is some pushback from those who view Ayurveda and yoga through a particular lens. This is a hot topic for many people.

Wherever you stand, this is the Gray Space: where Angela chooses to live without being rigid and black & white in her thinking no matter what it is. It's important to her to zoom out and see things from all perspectives and empathize. This conversation was a former place of shame for Angela, and why she feels like she HAS to talk about it.

This episode encourages you to look at context when you're in conversations with people about Ayurveda, and ask things such as:
Who are you talking to?
Where are they at in their life?
What’s the next best thing?
What *is* ahimsa in this moment?

And then to begin to soften in any area where you feel rigid. Please share this episode with others and tag Angela on Instagram at @simple_ayurveda . The more that we're in this Gray Space and accepting of others, the more that we soften into this place of compassion and true ahimsa, the better the world is.

In this episode, learn more about:
• A simple introduction of what ahimsa is to start to think about it or revisit it
• An overview and explanation of who traditional Yogis were
• What Ayurveda is and what it's purpose is
• The history of yoga and how it became so closely tied to the concept of Veganism
• What is said in the Vedic texts about animal products
• Recognizing the Gray Space and consider the difference between discomfort and harm
• and more!
