Joining Jayson today is Jason Usry, the creator, the producer, writer and head elf of the true crime, satire podcast Santa Maybe, a Criminal Jason has been an audio producer for more than half a dozen popular podcasts including several popular true crime podcasts. Jason grew up in a small town in Georgia where he learned the power of writing to help heal and entertain people. After watching the movie, The Titanic,  Jason wrote his first screenplay and probably his second and many more. Jason was a screenwriter on the 2019 thriller Dead Water, starring Casper Van Dean and Judd Nelson as well as the 2018 film Running for my Roots. He has also had two films and post-production, but perhaps Jason's most creative innovation was to turn the true crime world into a place of laughter, kindness and joy through the Santa Maybe, a Criminal podcast.

Jason says that his podcast was born out of a love for true crime storytelling and satire. But if I had to venture a guess, it really came out of a love for people. Jason also works at a television station in Savannah, Georgia during his days. He helps lead a creative team focused on marketing the station. During his nights and weekends he continues to write screenplays and produce his podcast. He also edits popular podcasts like the Prosecutors Podcast. For someone in the true crime community, what stands out about Jason and his writing are his empathy. Today we're going to talk about writing. An art that has the power to heal others, to bring catharsis, to help us see things from a different perspective and open up new horizons.

In this episode, Jayson is joined by Kent Clizbe and we're talking about life as an intelligence officer, the cost of being in a profession where you're being hired because of your clean record, and then are asked to turn your life into a house of lies and the silent trauma that accompanies much of that work and the stigma about getting help.

Kent served as a staff CIA case officer in the 1990s, and as a contractor after 9/11.  He has worked in various capacities in intelligence positions in Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.  His specialty is Counter-terrorism and Islamic Extremism.

Kent has also worked Counter-intelligence, Counter-proliferation, Counter-narcotics, and other targets.  In addition to extensive liaison work with foreign intel services, he has worked in the US Intel Community in inter-agency, inter-governmental intelligence operations since 9/11.  He was awarded the Intelligence Community Seal Medallion, the highest civilian intelligence agency decoration for contractors, for his counter-terrorist operations in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

In the US Air Force, Kent was a Vietnamese linguist, completing language training at DLI in Monterey, CA.  He served for three years at Clark AB in the Philippines.

A ransacker stalked a small city in California, breaking into 120 homes in 20 months. Two hundred and twenty miles away, three years later, a man committed 50 home-invasion rapes. Three years after that and 300 miles to the south, a series of at least 11 murders occurred. Former FBI Profiler Julia Cowley, the host of The Consult podcast and lead profiler on the case, joins us to discuss the man who would be linked to the seemingly dissimilar crimes, Joe DeAngelo, who turned out to be the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Original Nightstalker and a one-man machine of terror now known as the Gold State Killer. At a time when so much divides us, music like fictional books, television and movies are one of those things that tends to bring us together, Dani and Colton and their group NI/CO, have put a focus on what ties us together as partners in life and in music.

In 2016, Colton and Dani began writing and within two years they had a body of work that they released their first single which was a creative spin on Marvin Gay's, What's Going On. Eventually, they moved to Los Angeles where they've become well known for their work producing music videos and songs both as cover artists and for their own work. They have also created songs written with producers in Nashville, Los Angeles and London and have been featured on several top Spotify playlists and have appeared on various music networks including the CW Network, VH1, BET and Freeform, featured in promos for The Today Show, the World of Dance and advertising campaigns for Spotify and Ralph Lauren.

They've been entrepreneurial in their efforts doing everything from building custom wedding playlists, creating custom covers, creating their own music and performing.

Not talking about mental health place has been one of the last bastions in the resistance against busting stigma. The COVID-19 pandemic forced some of those conversations out into the open, creating opportunities for employees, leaders and those who help them.

Joining Jayson is Macey Cox who is a friend and a Learning and Development Specialist at the National Science Foundation and the co-chair of the Mental Health Employee Resource Group. The Employee Resource group advocates for better understanding of mental health issues among employees and leaders within the federal agency. I quickly found out that The Murder Sheet Podcast owned the case of the deaths of 13-year-old Abby Williams and 14-year-old Liberty Germain. Kevin Greenlee and Áine Cain brought a journalist's perspective to the case unlike other podcasts I had come across. They were more ethical, honest and balanced. They were not sensationalists and advocates who were most of the people who filled the airwaves. They are also unbelievably empathetic people and have been a great support to me, especially since my mother's recent passing.

The sensationalism and absurdity among content creators has only gotten worse and some of the inappropriate behavior has spread to even the defense team for the man charged.

In this episode, we discuss the media circus surrounding this case and how it's not serving the defendant or the victims.

More than a podcast about horror or the paranormal, Ding Dong Darkness Time is an exploration of society, culture, sociology, psychology and history.

I joined Allison this week on Ding Dong Darkness Time to talk about werewolves and shapeshifters. We explore the connection to our beliefs about shapeshifters and our fear of change while at the same time having a deep desire to change into something that can keep us and our loved ones safe. We also discuss the role that culture plays in these myths and a new era of the supernatural in the creative arts that increasingly empowers women and ties back into non-European roots about the supernatural. At the end of the day we use horror and the paranormal to explore things we don't understand, things that science cannot explain and things that we have a hard time emotionally grappling with.

When Raquel Bono was a child, she told her father that she wanted to work at the hospital so she could spend all day with him. When she started listening to jobs she could do at the hospital, her father asked, “Why don’t want you want to be a doctor?” She replied, “Dad, I did not know that girls could be doctors.”

That conversation led to a 30-year career as a trauma surgeon, to become a vice admiral in the Navy and executive who eventually ran the Defense Health Agency, a $50 billion healthcare enterprise.  Dr. Bono, who also led Washington State’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, joins us today to talk about breaking the model, women in healthcare and leadership in this volatile world.

Jayson is joined by John Cleghorn who is the pastor of Caldwell Presbyterian Church in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina. John has served at Caldwell since 2008 where he's the minister and head of staff at the church. Caldwell is a progressive mission-oriented church at the time when participation in the church and all sorts of religious organizations in America has declined, Caldwell has experienced some unusual growth. John came to the ministry later in life after retiring from a position as a senior vice president for Bank of America, where he served in various public policy and public relations roles.

At a time when church membership in America has declined to 47% in 2020 from 70% in 2000, John writes about the remarkable turnaround of Caldwell which was on the edge of closure when John became the Pastor. John traded his position at the corporate office of the nation's largest retail bank for the dusty, dated office at Caldwell. John writes a message about how churches can survive and even be resurrected at the intersections of race, sexuality, class and faith. John proposes creating something new and John tells a story not just about the turnaround of Caldwell, but also about his personal transformation.

I sit down as a guest with Kevin Greenlee and Áine Cain of The Murder Sheet podcast is for a conversation about true ethical crime and media coverage of the criminal justice system. We will talk about The Murder Sheet’s recent coverage of Twitter messages between figures in the Delphi murders case. We discuss how judges’ recent efforts to prevent the poisoning of jury pools are backfiring, silencing the families and others who have knowledge of cases and creating a vacuum that content creators, unwell true crime enthusiasts and defense attorneys have developed alliances to get around gag orders, which are often not effective and, therefore, likely unconstitutional.  We also discuss the beauties of the true crime space, including creators and listeners who have contributed to helping solve cold cases, get attention for marginalized victims and comfort the afflicted. We touch on a better way and how listeners and viewers are voting with their feet, turning away from many unethical creators.

Actor Alec Baldwin was on trial for involuntary manslaughter in July. Then, he wasn't. We are joined by Erlinda Ocampo Johnson, the special prosecutor who resigned from the case out of concerns about the prosecution withholding vital information from the defense. Jayson is joined by Julia Cowley, a retired FBI agent and Criminal Profiler. Julia spent 22 years in law enforcement investigating violent crime including 11 years as an agent and a decade more as a member of the famed Behavioral Analysis Unit or BAU. Julia makes no bones about the fact that true crime is what led her toward forensic science and law enforcement. Prior to joining the FBI, Julia was a special agent and forensic scientist with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. She has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University Of Oregon and a master's degree in forensic science from George Washington University.

At the BAU, Julia was the lead profiler in the Golden State Killer case and has had other assignments in the FBI including investigating white-collar crime, public corruption and civil rights matters.

Today, we're going to look at Israel Keyes through the lens of an actual FBI profiler.
