34-time Belgian champions RSC Anderlecht are in a bit of a slump.

Ligue 2 is renowned for its reputation as a producer of high-level European talent.

Ibrahima Konaté, Marcus Thuram, Maxence Lacroix, Cédric Bakambu and many others count it as the league which provided them their professional debut.

In fact, it was the same club that provided a first senior platform for those four household names in European football: FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.

Nestled in the east of France, close to the Swiss border, Sochaux is home to one of the country's best academy setups.

Currently in Ligue 2 after a lengthy top flight stay which ended in 2014, the team are coached by former centre-back Omar Daf, a custodian of the Sochaux culture.

The 2021/22 Austrian Bundesliga season is underway for another year with change afoot at the very top.

Jesse Marsch has moved on from his post as FC Red Bull Salzburg manager, Matthias Jaissle replacing him. As well, Patson Daka and Enock Mwepu have completed separate transfers to the Premier League, in something of a Salzburg exodus.

Not to fear though, Karim Adeyemi and co can pick up the slack.

AS Roma named José Mourinho as the club's new manager ahead of the 2021/22 season - to mixed reviews.

The Giallorossi have begun the season in excellent form, however, with six wins from their first six in all competitions, spearheaded by soon-to-be 24-year-old English striker Tammy Abraham.

Nicolò Zaniolo was sent off in his first game under Mourinho, but is staging a comeback after two successive cruciate knee ligament injuries. Meanwhile, the highly controversial manager has already blooded a handful of young players from Roma's successful Primavera (U-19) side this year.

Trophies are on the menu at the Olimpico, but it'll be box office, if nothing else.

The English Football League is flush with talent, whether it's pick-ups from elite academies or stars of non-league hand-picked by clubs higher up the pyramid.

Portugal missed out on automatic qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with defeat against Serbia earlier this month.

Rayo Vallecano are sitting pretty in LaLiga, currently occupying a spot in the European places. They've never finished higher than 8th in the club's history.

Coached by Andoni Iraola, a former student of Marcelo Bielsa, Ernesto Valverde and José Luis Mendilibar, Rayo are defying the odds and currently boast the best home record across Europe's top five leagues having picked up 25/27 points in their first nine games at Vallecas this season.

Oh, and they were promoted via the Segunda División play-offs last year.

Italy have failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
