28 Feb 2023Olympian & American Record Holder Elise Cranny Shares Her Wisdom On Comparison, Reflection, Presence, & The Importance Of Why 01:02:46

Back on the podcast is the one and only Elise Cranny!

Elise is an Olympian, and American Record Holder, but to me, she is a friend, mentor, and inspiration. The last time Elise was on the podcast was episode 50, so I thought, who better to have on 100ish episodes later than her. For those who aren't familiar, Elise runs for Nike's Bowerman Track Club and has slowly cemented herself as one of the greatest US Female Distance Runners of all time. Just within the past two years, Elise has won back-to-back US Championships in the 5k, made the Tokyo Olympics & Eugene World Championships, and set an American Record in the indoor 5k.

In this conversation, Elise and I talk about comparison, reflection, being where your feet are, why finding your Why is crucial, if she'll write a book one day, and much more! Any conversation I have with Elise is insightful, and I always walk away inspired. Quite frankly, this didn't feel like a podcast; more like a normal phone call that just happened to be recorded and put out to the public. I'm incredibly confident you'll find value from today's podcast and walk away enlightened and impacted.

Anytime I have Elise on the podcast, she drops many nuggets of wisdom, and today is no exception. So get your pen, paper, and AirPods, and enjoy my conversation with Elise.

30 Dec 2022A Wide Ranging Conversation With National Champion Irene Riggs | Hear Her Story, Insights, Choosing Stanford, & More 00:48:46

Today on the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with national champion, Irene Riggs. Irene recently won Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) and had a historic season, forever cementing her legacy in her home state West Virginia. The special thing is that Irene has two seasons left to add to her incredibly storied career already.

In this conversation, Irene and I dive deep into her running career, life, goals, and different experiences that have shaped her into who she is today. We discuss her past XC season, including her NXN win, how her twin sister Caroline has impacted and inspired her, choosing Stanford, and her goals for 2023. This conversation was a ton of fun and inspiring as well. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, you'll find something to relate to and learn from in this episode. Irene is an incredibly insightful and inspiring guest, and we're sure you'll find something valuable in this episode.

01 Aug 2022Track & Social Media Star Masai Russell Shares Insights, Reflections, & Wisdom From Her Successful Career 01:01:22

Over the past year, Masai Russell has taken over not only on the track this past year, but also social media. As of writing this, she has 189k followers on Instagram. In high school, Masai was an Eight-Time National Champion and in addition to this, was a 2xNational Record holder. Currently while at the University of Kentucky she’s an 11-time All-American. She will be returning to Kentucky for one more year so watch out.

While many see Masai on social media or lighting up the track, very few actually see who she is beyond these things. In this podcast, we seek to understand Masai and her story better. You’ll hear insights and wisdom throughout this episode from Masai. I’ve interviewed very few guests over the years as wise as Masai is.

This is a really fun, lighthearted, and inspiring conversation! I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I did. Please like, subscribe, and share with your friends if you enjoyed today’s episode! You can also give us a five-star review on Spotify and support the sponsors who support us (:

11 Jul 2024Defying The Odds: The Story Of James Corrigan & How He Made The Olympic Team In Stunning Fashion 00:35:17

Today on the podcast is newly minted Olympian James Corrigan!

James has had quite the wild past few months going from 9th at the NCAA Meet to placing third at the US Olympic Trials. Because James didn't have the Olympic standard or enough world ranking points, he had less than a week to chase the Olympic Standard time. James flew out to Penn and got the job done, qualifying for his first Olympic Games in Paris.

James has run 4:01 in the Mile (at altitude), 8:13 in the steeplechase, 13:30 in the 5k, and was an All-American in his first NCAA Cross Country Championships.

James will be a junior this upcoming fall at BYU.

In today's conversation, James takes me through his wild last month, from making the Olympics to getting married and everything in between. We break down his remarkable performance at the US Olympic Trials and document what it took to get to that place.

If this episode blesses you, please share with a friend!

THE EMILY SISSON SPECIAL

Emily Sisson is one of the greatest US Distance Runners of all-time, and she still has her best running ahead of her. At every level, Emily has been ABSOLUTELY dominant.

In high school, Emily qualified for the prestigious Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships all four years, a feat that has barely been replicated throughout history.

In college, at Providence College, Emily was a two-time NCAA champion, winning titles in the 5000m at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships in 2015. She also set a collegiate indoor record for the women's 5000m with a time of15:12.22 at the Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Emily turned pro in 2015 with New Balance and continued to train under her college coach, Ray Tracey, and has all the way up to the present day.

As a pro, Emily has set multiple American Records, including the American Record in the Marathon, which stands to this day. It was set at the 2022 Chicago Marathon, where she ran 2:18:29. Emily made the US Olympic team this past summer in the Marathon after placing 2nd at the US Olympic Trials in Orlando in February.

In today's conversation, Emily takes me through the biggest lessons and learnings from her successful career, her years in high school and how she's always fallen back on her love for the sport, her ambitions for the future, and so much more.

I absolutely loved this conversation and the opportunity to pick Emily's brain on so many topics. This one is packed with wisdom! Take the time to listen to it.

09 Jan 2023THE CALL ROOM With Ben Flanagan | Episode 1: Things Are Heating Up In Ann Arbor 00:45:19

Have you ever wondered what it looks like to train as a professional distance runner? What the day-to-day life looks like? How to handle setbacks, failure, adversity, and doubts? How to set goals, train for them, and execute them on race day? As outsiders, we see remarkable athletes accomplish remarkable things every year. We don't see the behind-the-scenes of what went into that remarkable performance. We don't see or understand the hours of hard work, struggle, doubt, etc. The Running Effect is here to bring you an inside look at all these things with the man, the myth, the legend, Ben Flanagan.

Ben Flanagan has cemented himself as one of the best Canadian runners of all time in his short four years of being a professional runner. He is the Canadian half-marathon record holder with a time of 61:00 and has won the prestigious Falmouth Road Race three years in a row (gaining the name "The King of Falmouth" in the process). In addition, he won the 2018 NCAA 10k title while competing for the University of Michigan. Ben is currently sponsored by On Running and is a member of VNTC based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Over the next two months, Ben and I will dive deep into his indoor campaign leading into The Ten, presented by Sound Running. We will go into his training, racing, mindset, and answer your questions along the way! The first episode is now live. It was a big introduction to the series, and we go through many interesting subjects. Go listen wherever you find your podcasts! She’s also a great teammate who loves her team and is always there for them.”

I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Sadie. It was light, fun, and inspiring. We discuss her start in the sport all the way up to going into some of her biggest races. Registered Dietitian and running coach Cortney Berling joins the show to cut through the noise of diet culture and teach us how to fuel smart for long-term running success.

Cortney, also a Certified Diabetes Instructor, mother of three (ages 1, 3 and 5), and military spouse (her husband is activeduty Marine Corps) has a diverse background in sports and nutrition.

Originally from Medina, Ohio, she ran cross country and track at The University of Cincinnati. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition from Cincinnati, completed her Dietetic Internship at the Cleveland Clinic, and obtained her Master’s of Public Health from Liberty University.

Cortney’s mission is to educate runners on how to integrate smart, intuitive eating and sports nutrition into their regimen for optimal performance on the roads, trails and track. 06 May 2024Running Across The United States In 52 Days (59 Miles A Day): The Remarkable Story Of Paul Johnson00:50:08

Less than 400 people have ever completed the Transcontinental Run across the United States.

Recently, Paul Johnson became one of those people, and one of the fastest to ever do it, completing the trek in 52 days and averaging 59 miles a day (yes, you read that right.)

Paul is passionate about inspiring others to get up, engage in physical activity, and find their own positive outlets. Paul discovered that military and veteran communities are particularly prone to struggles with mental health due to the nature of everything they do and experience, and because of this, Paul dedicated this trans con run to Team Red White & Blue. He raised over $590,000 for this important cause.

In today's conversation, Paul takes me through his journey and progression within the sport, the logistics behind planning a trans con run, how he preserved despite wanting to throw in the towel every single morning, what's next, and so much more!

Man, was this conversation inspiring. One of the things that Paul shared with me that struck me was how, just a few years ago, he felt like his body was "literally going to fall apart running 30 miles a week," to then averaging 59 miles a day on this run. His story is one of dedication and the power of running for something bigger than yourself.

The journey of Jackson Heidesch is one of unbridled honesty and crushing heartbreak.

From high school standout to oft-injured Duke student-athlete, Jackson Heidesch has been forced to deal with more than just physical maladies.

It's been 18 months of toil, rehab and bouts of depression for the Iowa native, who is now opening up about his mental health struggles. Jackson will be taking a designated pause from the NCAA to redshirt the entire indoor and outdoor season.

Although he's been through ringer in his short running career, he seems to be setting the stage for a resurgence on and off the track and grass.

Jackson's hardships since agreeing to run for Duke include a couple of grade 4 stress fractures; mono, and the aforementioned depression. With a combination of family support and talk therapy, in addition to physical therapy work–Jackson has come out the other side of this dark tunnel ready to get back to logging miles and competing with the best in the country.

Jackson was the 2022-23 Gatorade Boys Cross Country Player of the Year for Iowa, where he broke the 4 minute mile barrier to break the state record, running a 3:59.08 at the HOKA Festival of Miles. That year he also swept the 1600m and 3200m titles at the state meet, running a 4:07.28 and a 9:08.86, respectively.

In today's conversation, Jackson takes me through his past two years of ups and downs, how he became aware of his mental health, his plans going into the future, and so much more.

20 May 2023NCAA Star Yaseen Abdalla Shares Invaluable Wisdom & Insights From His Storied Career 00:43:39

The most listened-to man in the history of The Running Effect makes his return to the podcast. His name is Yaseen Abdalla.

For those who aren't familiar with Yaseen, he went from a 24:42 5k in high school to NCAA Champion at the University of Texas. His story is nothing short of inspiring and impactful. Yaseen is a man who works harder than almost everyone I know and has a smile on his face while doing it. Yaseen has become one of the top runners in the NCAA due to this work-ethic and unbreakable belief in himself that he can and will prevail.

In his second appearance on the podcast, he brings many nuggets of wisdom. I mean, the man does not miss. Every time I speak with Yaseen, he's always bringing the fire. In this episode, he shares his thoughts on quick fixes, why the long road is always better, his performance at SECs, how to rebound from disappointing performances, and he closes out the episode by directly sharing a message with you all.

Someone once DMd and said they listen to the Yaseen podcast 3-4 times a week, so I hope round two is worthy of that kind of attention. So tap in and enjoy the Yaseen Abdalla Special.

22 Jan 2023800m Superstar Aaliyah Miller Shares Her Story, Signing With On, Joining Team BOSS, & Goals For 2023. 00:43:50

Today on the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with NCAA Champ, Team BOSS member, and professional runner for On, Aaliyah Miller! In high school, she ran 2:02 in the 800m, represented Team USA with silver at IAAF World U20 Championship, and perhaps craziest of all, won the 400m, 800m, and 1600m, at her state meet her senior year. Aaliyah then went on to Baylor, where she won the 2021 NCAA Indoor 800m title in a meet record of 2:00.69 and became a 6xschool record holder at Baylor.

This conversation with Aaliyah was so much fun and very insightful. As you can read above, Aaliyah has had an incredibly successful career so it was an awesome opportunity to deconstruct her career and hear about the ups, downs, and everything in between! We discuss her high school years, Baylor + winning an NCAA title, signing with On + Team BOSS, and hear about her future plans.

10 Jun 2022Connor Burns Speaks On Running 3:58.83 In The Mile As A Junior In High School 00:28:17

On June 2, 2022, Connor Burns wrote his name into the history books by becoming the 15th high school American boy to break four minutes in the mile. His time of 3:58.83 puts him as the #7 at the distance all time.

Many were scratching their heads on the night of June 2. I was too. So I sent a message to Connor within seconds of him finishing to see if he’d be willing to do an interview. This podcast is a deep-dive into Connor’s history in the sport, his historic race on June 2, and his plans for the future. This episode is a fun and insightful one!

Looking to the future, Connor is far from satisfied. Alan Webb’s high school national record of 3:53.42 may only last one more year… As he stated on the podcast, “Kind of looking at that national record for Alan Webb. Definitely see if that’s in the cards or not, but definitely am eyeing that down…”

Next up, you can catch him doubling the distance in his pursuit of a national title at the Brooks PR 2-mile presented by @soundrunning

27 May 2024A Conversation With The Fastest 13Yr In The WORLD: The Story Of Erik Semling - Future Olympian00:38:53

Today on the podcast is the youngest guest in the history of The Running Effect Podcast.

His name is Erik Semling. He's in 8th grade and 13 years old from the state of Minnesota. As an 8th grader this past Fall, he placed 6th at his HIGH SCHOOL (yes, you read that right) State Meet.

Erik has run 15:09 in the 5k, which is an unofficial age group world record, and 31:17 in the 10k, which is an official age group world record. Again, this kid is only 13. In 2022 he became the AAU Indoor 3000m National Champion and has only improved since then.

In today's conversation, Erik takes me through his start in the sport, setting world records, an in-depth look at his training, his ambitions in sport, handling hate, and so much more!

I was quite frankly shocked with how articulate Erik was as an 8th grader. This episode was awesome, and I have no doubt will inspire you to chase after your goals all the more!

23 Jul 2022The Origins Of Stoke Performance With Founders James & Wilkerson | A Story Of Creating A Successful Company From The Bottom00:49:46

The majority of twenty-eight-year-olds are living a life of status quo. Very few branch out and make something new. At the age of twenty-eight James Perez & Wilkerson Given challenged the status quo and started Stoke Performance. From our very first interaction, I was immediately very impressed with James & Wilkerson as people. Their hard work ethic and dedication from day 1 to this company have resulted in a world-class product that has helped so many people!

In this episode, James & Wilkerson dive into the origins of their relationship with each other. We talk about all things starting a company: the challenges that accompany it, lessons learned, fun stories, and more!

The most refreshing thing within a company is when the people are better than the product. I can certainly say that’s the case with Stoke Performance. One thing I can say confidently is that Stoke Performance is going to have a big impact in the coming years.

If you’re interested in using this product, you can get 10% of all products with code “THERUNNINGEFFECT”. In addition, we get a small commission from sales using that code so you are directly contributing to the future of this podcast!

03 Apr 2023NCAA All-American Alex Ostberg Shares His Wisdom On Perspective, Gratitude, Taking Action, & Being A Life-Long Learner 00:56:54

I am thrilled to welcome back the one and only, Alex Ostberg.

Alex is an eight-time All-American. He competed at Stanford University for four years before transferring to the University of North Carolina to get his master's degree. Alex holds PRs of 3:58 in the Mile, 7:49 in the 3k, 13:18 in the 5k, and 28:49 in the 10k. He also has his Bachelor's Degree in human biology, a minor in psychology, and a master's in public health.

Alex is an incredibly perspicacious speaker who has a wealth of knowledge, experience, and depth. Alex is the person who I have often referred to on previous podcasts as "my mentor." Besides my parents, Alex has contributed more to my life than anyone else I know. Put simply, I would not be the person I am today without him, nor would this podcast exist.

In this conversation, Alex shares his wisdom on perspective, handling adversity, gratitude, taking action, being a life-long learner, and how many days he thinks he can last in a room of darkness (will make more sense when you listen to the podcast). I always walk away from my conversations with Alex enlightened and a better version of myself. I'm confident you'll say the same after listening.

I have the great privilege of speaking with Juliette Laracuente-Huebner today!

I looked up the word "Unbelievable," went to the images tab, and a picture of Juliette came up. Guys, she legitimately won the team title at the 2023 Ohio Indoor State Meet BY HERSELF. She is committed to compete for the University of Cincinnati this year.

In this conversation, Juliette goes through her start in the sport, this past indoor season and all the historic events that came with it, what her training looks like (my jaw dropped), her ambitions for the future, what it's like being an Aunt, and so much more!

This conversation was nothing short of inspiring. Juliette's passion for her craft shines through in this episode, and I'm confident you'll walk away from this conversation all the more motivated to chase after excellence in your own life.

14 Feb 2025The Man Who Coaches Champions: How To Have Sustainable Excellence As A High School Athlete With Niwot's Coach Kelly Christensen + Insights On How He Coached An NXN Winning Team & Individual 01:01:11

We are joined today by one of the best high school cross country coaches in the country, Kelly Christensen.

Coach Christensen leads Niwot High School in Colorado. They recently won the High School Nike Cross Nationals boy’s race in December. The team put together one of the best finishes in NXN history, totaling just 70 points, and emerged as the first boy’s team to capture the title in Colorado high school history.

Coach Christensen became a school counselor and coach at Niwot in Colorado in 2016, after transitioning from a career in construction management. Coach Christensen earned a bachelor’s in psychology from Western State College. During his time at Niwot, the Cross Country program has achieved five girl’s state championship titles and two boy’s state titles. The boys have crowned four individual state champions and one individual runner-up finish as well.

Prior to coaching at Niwot, Christensen served as the head cross country and track coach at Palmer Ridge High School from 2014 - 2016 (achieving two boys’ track and field titles and a cross country title).

In today’s conversation, Coach Kelly takes me through his coaching philosophies, his backstory into coaching, how he emphasizes the importance of balance, the story of how his boys won their first-ever NXN title, how he coaches disappointment, and so much more.

This conversation was a true blessing and I hope you take the time to listen to it. I wish I had this podcast episode when I was a freshman in high school. Don’t waste the opportunity to learn from one of the best coaches in the sport.

17 Feb 2023THE CALL ROOM With Ben Flanagan | Episode 3: Hills and Valleys00:41:02

Episode 3! A big recap of BU 5k, where Ben ran 13:11, NBGP, where he ran the 3k, and a race in Chicago where he paced. We also discuss current track news such as Millrose & 52 guys breaking four minutes in the mile at the same meet.

About THE CALL ROOM: Have you ever wondered what it looks like to train as a professional distance runner?

07 Mar 2023Olympian & Newly Minted American Record Holder Yared Nuguse Recaps His Historic Indoor Season + Reading, Dogs, & Sneaking A Pet Tortoise Across The Country00:53:32

Yared Nuguse. A name you've heard time and time again over the past few months as he's cemented his name into the history books. It all started in Boston, where Yared ran a new American Record in the 3k, clocking 7:28.24. He followed up that performance by running yet another American Record (and the second fastest time ever) with a 3:47.38 at the Millrose Games Wanamaker Mile. Lastly, Yared flew to Europe, where he won a 1500m against a world-class field. Needless to say, Yared is on fire, and I had to get him back on the podcast.

Yared runs for the OAC (On Athletic's Club), is a graduate of The University of Notre Dame, where he won NCAA Championships and set an NCAA Record, and was an Olympian for the US in 2020.

This conversation was insightful, impactful, hilarious, and a ton of fun. Yared documents his last seasons at Notre Dame and how he overcame setbacks and failure, signing with OAC, training with "heavy hitters," breaking two American Records this season, future goals for the rest of the year, sneaking his pet tortoise Tyro across the country, and who has the best dog on OAC (sorry, Gus.)

Needless to say, through listening, you'll be inspired, motivated, and have many laughs along the way.

06 Feb 2025Wilma Nielsen Shares Insights From Her 4:25 Mile, Plans To Break The Collegiate Record, Being Coached By Shalane Flanagan, & How You Can Make Your Dreams Come True In Sport00:26:13

Wilma Nielsen, the Swedish mid-distance phenom from Oregon, joins the show today to discuss her recent breakthroughs in running.

Wilma is fresh off breaking the school record in the mile in January at the Dr. Sander Scorcher indoor meet at the Armory in New York. This six-second PR places her number three all time in the NCAA for the indoor mile and number two on Sweden’s all-time indoor list.

Wilma is a two-time All-American and three-time Swedish National Champion. She won the bronze medal at the European U23 Championships in Estonia where she ran a 2:02.29 in the 800m. Wilma has run collegiately for Bradley University, the University of Washington and now Oregon.

Wilma was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. She has a twin sister, Julia–who was a package deal with her at Bradley–as well as older siblings Simon and Elisabeth, the latter of who was a Swedish National Championship finalist in the 800m in 2019 and 2020. Needless to say, running was a fixture in the Nielsen household.

Wilma was running fast even in her high school days, logging PRs of 58.19 in the 400m, 2:10.01 in the 800m and 4:31.59 in the 1,500m. Since she started running collegiately, she has lowered those to 57.50 in the 400m, 2:02.26 in the 800m, 4:07.38 in the 1500m and the aforementioned 4:25.89 mile.

In today’s conversation, Wilma dives into her recent 4:25 Mile, her plans to do bigger and better things at the Millrose games, her hopes for her future, how she’s grown as an athlete while at Oregon, what it’s like to have Shalane Flanagan as a coach, and so much more.

Take the time to learn from and get insights from one of the biggest stars in the NCAA right now!

07 Mar 2024A Conversation With NCAA Champion, World Championship Finalist, & 4:24 Miler Maia Ramsden Ahead Of The NCAA Championships00:36:50

Today on the podcast is 2xNCAA Champion & National-Record Holder, Maia Ramsden!

This conversation was recorded the week leading into the NCAA Championship Mile, so it's very fun looking back on this conversation and hearing what Maia's mindset was leading into the race where she won in a meet record time of 4:25.13.

If you don't know who Maia is (you're probably living under a rock), she runs for Harvard and has been on a tear recently. Last weekend, she placed 10th in the Women's 1500m at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Scotland while representing New Zealand. This season, she also ran 4:24.83, becoming the second-fastest female indoor miler of all time and taking down a 10-year-old Ivy League Record. She is also the Harvard record holder in the 1500m, 5000m, and Indoor Mile. Before Harvard, Maia won U20 national titles in the 1500m and 800m.

On the grass, Maia placed 11th at NCAA's in 2022 and in 2023 eclipsed that former result by placing 10th in the country.

Last year, Maia signed an NIL deal with On.

In today's conversation, Maia goes through her recent success, the World Championships, her mindset going into NCAA's this weekend, how she's handled all the recent success, balancing academics and athletics, her reflections on her final year at Harvard, and much more!

07 Mar 2025American Record Holder & US Champion Josh Hoey Is Coming For It All: Why He Believes The US Is The Next Up In The 800m & What He Wants To Accomplish In His Career + Training Like Jakob Ingebrigtsen00:39:07

Adidas pro Josh Hoey joins us fresh off a scorching performance at the Indoor Championships in New York, kicking off his 2025 season in other-wordly fashion.

Josh broke his own American Indoor 800m record, winning his first national championship at the 2025 USATF Indoor Championships in Staten Island with a time of 1:43.24.

Josh also ran a blazing 1:43.9 in the 800m at the Millrose Games; prior to that he won the 1500m at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston with a time of 3:33.66, beating Olympian Grant Fisher.

In January of this year he set a new American record in the short track 1,000m with a time of 2:14.48–which is the second fastest time in indoor history. Josh finished fourth in the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800m with a time of 1:44.12.

Josh went to Bishop Shanahan High School in Pennsylvania, where he set a U.S. high school national record in the 800m as a senior with a time of 1:47.67.

Josh has experienced a lot in his time as a competitive runner, having worked with six coaches over six years. While Josh's dad is his main collaborator when it comes to training, his current work with coach Justin Rinaldi–who leads the Fast8 Track Club–is bearing immediate dividends.

In today's conversation, Josh takes me through his mindset, why he has much bigger things on his mind than what he's accomplished so far in 2025, what he wants to do on the World Stage, the state of the US Men's 800m, why his faith is so important to him and much more.

This conversation was excellent in its ability to dive-deep into one of the biggest up-and-coming runners in the world.

After an unforgettable 2024-25 indoor season, North Carolina coaching legend Chris Miltenberg is back on the podcast and ready to dish on the recent performances from his Tar Heel stars. Coach Milt has overseen the development of standout athletes Ethan Strand and Parker Wolfe, in addition to female mid-distance star Makayla Paige. Makayla and Ethan both are coming off NCAA Indoor titles— the former in the 800m with a time of 2:00.39; the latter with a 7:52.03 in the 3,000m in an incredibly fierce collegiate field. This run has been happening since the 2023-24 cross country and track and field seasons, where Coach Milt and the Tar Heels landed in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships, while also claiming 6th place in cross country and 5th place in outdoor track and field. The Tar Heels also won their first ACC Cross Country Championship since 1985 and their first ACC Indoor Championship since 1996 that year. Coach Milt led Parker Wolfe to winning North Carolina's first-ever 5,000m National Championship at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Wolfe has won five ACC championships under Coach Miltenberg and set five school records, while also becoming the Tar Heel's first runner in history to be named to The Bowerman Award Watchlist.Whether it’s coaching Strand, Wolfe or Paige—or leading an impressive array of talent, Coach Milt has cemented himself as a transformative force in the world of track and field, while also mentoring and leading his many successful athletes. He has created an enduring legacy as one of the sport's most exceptional and influential coaches, and seems poised to add to it in the years to come. In today’s conversation, Coach Milt takes me through exclusive insights from the 2025 indoor season, how he balances the wins with not getting complacent, his thoughts heading into the outdoor season, what Makayla's win means for the women's program if he'll ever coach pros, and so much more. 18 Apr 2022The State of The Running Effect Hosted By Olympian & American Record Holder Elise Cranny | A Deep-Dive Into The Beginnings & Future Of The Podcast01:17:06

This week's episode of the podcast is a very unique one. In July 2020, I started The Running Effect, and since then, I've had the great privilege of speaking to over 60+ amazing guests. Many of you who are avid listeners of the podcast probably don't know the origins of the podcast. So when my good friend Elise Cranny came to me with the idea of doing a show giving listeners an inside look at who I am and how The Running Effect started I couldn't pass! In this episode, we go through my start in the sport of running (which is actually quite hilarious), where the idea of starting a podcast came from, lessons learned from almost 60 episodes, and many other fun questions! I hope this episode will give you all an inside look at the inner workings of this podcast and what our future plans look like! Starting a podcast at 15 years old is far from normal, but I'm immensely glad I did. Being able to help fellow young runners in their pursuit of success is a very rewarding feeling. I hope to continue to push the sport forward through this podcast.

Lastly, a massive thank you to Elise for hosting this episode. She's been one of my biggest supporters from Day 1 and is constantly helping out behind the scenes. I joke that she's the CEO of the company, but twisting the meaning to Chief-Encouragement-Officer. Elise truly is one of the most selfless, encouraging, and kindest people I've ever had the privilege to know. One of the most important pieces of advice I was given early in life was to surround yourself with people who will push you to be the best version of yourself. Elise has certainly done that and then some! Not only has Elise helped me become a better human being, but has helped improve this podcast as well. Professional athletes will always say that they strive to be good athletes on and off the track, and Elise is the gold standard for that.

If you want to help us out please like, subscribe, and share. You can also give us a five-star review on Spotify! 27 Mar 2025How Josette Norris Andrews Has Taken Her Running To The Next Level In 2025 + How She Deals With Setbacks & How YOU Can Get Faster TODAY00:45:55

Josette Norris Andrews joins the show after setting an incredible new 2025 world standard in the 5,000m at the BU Last Chance meet, clocking a speedy 14:44.80. (Josette's personal best in the 5,000m is an even-faster 14:43.36.)

Josette is healthy and feeling like herself again, and it showed with a massive personal best at the Millrose Games in February when she ran a PR of 8:29.77 in the 3,000m.

Josette competed for Team USA in both the 2022 and 2024 World Indoor Championships. She was also a member of the 2023 World Indoor team in the 3,000m, but unfortunately injured herself shortly after, which took her out for most of the spring 2024 season.

In her two appearances of that year she came in second at the USATF Indoor Champs with a 3,000m time of 9:03.10; she then competed in the Olympic Trials in the 5,000m and came in 11th with a time of 15:26.25.

Josette, who is a member of the On Athletics Club out of Boulder Colorado,  has additional PRs of 3:59 in the 1,500m and 4:20 in the mile.

Collegiately, Josette competed for UNC and Georgetown; one of her many highlights includes a 2019 fourth place finish in the 5,000m in the Division 1 Outdoor Championships.

In today's conversation, Josette takes me through her recent improvements as a professional runner, things she's learning, her time at the OAC, her goals for the future, her training routines, and much more!

This one is packed full of insights from one of the best pro-runners in the country at the moment. Don't miss it!

08 Jun 2023A Conversation With Jackson Heidesch After Eclipsing The Four Minute Barrier & Becoming The First Ever High School Iowan To Do It01:03:32

THE KING OF IOWA RETURNS TO THE PODCAST.

On June 1, 2023, at the Hoka Festival of Miles, Jackson Heidesch became the 20th-ever prep boy to break four minutes in the mile. Jackson ran 3:59.08 to become the 10th fastest boy in history at the distance. A feat that was thought to be "physically impossible" less than a century ago, Jackson went and did the impossible, yet this wasn't unimaginable to those who know Jackson and have seen his years of hard work and dedication leading up to this accomplishment.

I had the privilege of spending most of the day with Jackson leading into his race. From hanging out at breakfast to going to the world-famous Arch, I saw Jackson prepare and get ready to attack history. Because of that, today's conversation is more special than most of mine due to being able to go through a plethora of topics surrounding the race and preparing for it.

In today's conversation, you will hear all about the race, how Jackson prepared for it, what he's looking to do next, and hilarious stories from the day leading into the race that are one of a kind.

I hope you all take some time to listen to this inspirational and, at times, hilarious discussion with my friend and the King of Iowa, Jackson Heidesch.

31 Oct 2023The Call Room Rising Stars: Drew Griffith On Running The 11th Fastest XC 5k EVER, Ambitions Of Winning Foot Locker, & More00:38:08

In Episode 2 of The Call Room Rising Stars, I have the privilege of speaking with Drew Griffith!

If you're not familiar with Drew, he is one of the biggest up-and-coming stars in the US prep distance scene. Drew is the reigning Foot Locker Northeast Regional Champion. He went on to place 6th at the National Meet after throwing up the night before (more fun BTS in the podcast). Drew currently holds PRs of 4:07 in the Mile, 8:48 in the 2-Mile, and most recently ran 14:21 in XC, making him the 11th fastest ever at the distance. Needless to say, Drew is on a tear and nothing seems to be holding him back as we get into the postseason.

In today's conversation, Drew and I go through his story, from his early passion for swim to progressively getting more serious about the sport of running. We go through winning the Foot Locker Northeast Regional last year, placing 6th in the country while being sick, and not having the track season he was hoping to have. Lastly, we get into his ambitions for the rest of the season, lessons from his successful career, and so much more. Today's episode is one for the books! Many good nuggets of wisdom in here that you can apply directly into your running and life.

Today's episode is a part of "The Call Room Rising Stars" a series where you will meet the next generation of stars, hear their journey to get to where they are today, and get an inside look at their preparation going into the Foot Locker Regional & National Meets.

28 Jan 2025Inside The Mind Of HS National Record Holder Sadie Engelhardt: Insights From Her 4:28 Mile, Making The US Olympic Trials As Just A Junior In HS, Her Plans To Break The 1500m Record, & More00:40:32

Sadie Engelhardt returns to the podcast today.

Back on the podcast is the 18-year-old American track and field mega-star from Ventura, California.  Sadie is a senior at Ventura High School, where she has had a storied career and is considered one of the best high school runners ever.

The NC State commit (and only the third girls competitor from California to be named Gatorade Best Player of the Year) has excelled in both cross country and track and field. Most recently, she came in 11th at the Girls XC Nationals on December 7. She has also maintained a 4.59 GPA in the classroom.

Sadie has even found time to volunteer locally on behalf of Runners For Public Lands, helping to clean trails and other places to run around Ventura County. With all that said, it's the oval where she truly separates herself from the rest.

Her PRs include times of 2:03.46 in the 800m, 4:08.86 in the 1500m, 4:28.46 in the mile, and 9:50.69 in the 3200m. The aforementioned mile time was a national high school record in the outdoor mile. Sadie has had three consecutive 1,600m state titles, and she helped her school win a state championship in the 4x800 relay.

In 2024, Sadie ran in her first professional outdoor meet at The TEN, where she stunned the world by running a 4:09.7 in the 1500m. She then zeroed in on three professional meets to try and make the Olympic qualifying standard, and at the Portland Track Festival on June 9 she pulled off a 4:08.86 in the 1500m, earning her spot at the qualifier–becoming the third high school athlete to ever qualify for the 1500m in the Olympics.

While Sadie only competed in the preliminary round, it was a valuable experience for this rising phenom to keep in her arsenal.

In today's conversation, Sadie shares reflections from her XC season, her hopes and dreams for the 2025 track season, insights from her training, how she plans to go out with a bang in HS, and so much more.

Sadie is truly doing unprecedented things in the sport, and it's always a privilege to sit down with her and have a meaningful conversation with her.
