While the world's current focus is on the Israel/Hamas war, Ukraine's war with Russia has entered its third year and news from Ukraine is that the country's military is running seriously low on war fighting equipment and munitions as the U.S. primarily is holding up a major arms shipment due to Republican/Democrat political infighting. NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg has floated a plan for a 100-billion Euro, 5-year weapons support plan for Ukraine prior to the U.S. national election in November. NATO is calling on all its members to live up to their 2% of GDP military spending commitment that Canada has already said we will not reach.  While Ukrainian drones are now striking deep inside Russia, on the battlefields its military is facing operating with war equipment and mismatched ammunition. Meanwhile, French president Macron has not ruled out sending French ground troops into Ukraine to engage Russia there. NACI (National Advisory Committee on Immunization) is recommending all Canadians who haven't had a Covid booster get one for the fall if it has been at least six months since their last vaccine shot or since last getting infected with Covid. NACI focused particularly on those over 65, residents of long-term-care homes, if you're pregnant and/or at high risk due to an underlying medical condition. Also strongly recommends the booster for First Nations, Metis and Inuit communties, members of racialized communities and essential workers. British Columbia and Alberta are taking steps to either limit or end smartphone use in classrooms beginning in September. B.C. Is leaving the implementation to individual school districts and Alberta appears poised to follow that formula.  In Saskatchewan, the Prairie South School District (Moose Jaw) leaves the policy concerning presence and use of mobile phones in the classroom to individual schools. Ontario has announced all phones must be silent and turned off during the school day for K-6. Grade 7 and up students may use their phones during recess and lunch, but during class periods they must be turned off. Justin Trudeau just spent days attending the NATO conference making sweeping statements about Canada's commitment to the Alliance. These have been met with eye-rolling and criticism of Canada's meagre commitment to defence-spending. David Milgaard spent 23 years in prison, wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of a nurse from Saskatoon. He was offered release multiple times, if he would plead guilty. He refused. The driver of the fleeing car was 17 at the time and faces a murder trial. A second occupant of the car who Sgt. Harnett was in the process of arresting on outstanding warrants pled guilty to manslaughter and will be out of prison before Sgt Harnett's then unborn son will reach his 4th birthday. Sunday, September 25, the first post-Covid delayed Canadian Police and Peace Officers Memorial service will take place in Ottawa. On Monday (Sept 12) Toronto Police Service Constable Andrew Hong was shot and killed execution-style by Sean Petrie who according to police had been waiting at a Mississauga, Ontario, Tim Hortons for more than 2 hours for a police officer to appear. Petrie had earlier hijacked a vehicle which also involved him shooting one person who suffered life-altering injuries. Petrie then drove to his former employer's place of business and shot and killed the 38 year old father of 2 young girls and shooting two other persons at the auto body shop with one victim not expected to survive. - Petrie was then shot and killed by police near Hamilton.               Guest: David Perry.
