28 Jul 2020Dr. Janeane Anderson: Better Answers from Our Doctors00:53:16

Find @janeanenicole on Instagram, or by email jande163@uthsc.edu

Guest Bio:

Dr. Janeane N. Anderson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Disease

Prevention in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tenn.

She earned a Ph.D. and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Southern California. Dr.

Anderson’s research targets the relationship between patient-provider communication practices and clinical and quality of life outcomes among women and adolescents of color. She studies the ways in which patients and medical care providers share power and responsibility to achieve patient health goals in sexual health and chronic disease management. She has been the co-investigator for two federally funded studies to examine patient-provider sexual communication and sexual quality of life among women with early-stage, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. She has also conducted research to explore how adolescents use social media for health information seeking and sexual risk reduction.

Dr. Anderson’s research program also includes HIV/STI prevention interventions for people of color,

specifically Black women, adolescents, and sexual minorities. She has participated in several community-based research projects to develop and refine HIV risk-reduction interventions for Black men who have sex with men, homeless Black mothers, teenaged mothers of color, post-incarceration substance users, and high school-aged teens in urban environments.

Highlights:

  • Sexual health challenges impact personal perceptions of beauty and femininity; may lead to internalized stigma and decreased satisfaction in romantic/sexual relationships
  • Breast cancer survivors, regardless of race, express willingness to discuss sensitive topics (e.g, sexual health concerns); however, Black women report those discussions made their providers feel uncomfortable.
  • Black women with breast cancer are more likely to experience poorer communication with healthcare providers than White women, which may be improved by technology and advocates.
  • Lesbian, bisexual, and queer women experience complex, hard-to-navigate communication environments with healthcare providers; sexual health information-seeking and patient-provider interactions
  • Providers are not initiating sexual health conversations with their patients: Here are some reasons why.
  • Longstanding, supportive patient-provider relationships, especially with female providers, facilitate candid sexual health conversations.
  • Peers (power of sisterhood) are underutilized social support and sexual information resources

Christina Rasmussen is an acclaimed grief educator, author of Second Firsts and Where Did You Go?. She is also the host of The Dear Life Podcast.

She is the founder of The Life Reentry Institute and has helped countless people break out of what she coined the “waiting room” of grief to rebuild their lives through her Life Reentry Model. With this, she introduces a new model of grief based on the science of neuroplasticity. She describes grief as a catalyst for redefining identity, and outlines the process of “reentry”, or returning to life.

Her mission is to change the way we grieve, the way we live, and how we define our potential in this life, and the hereafter. She has consulted on the 2019 movie short Dreamwisher and currently working on her very first work of fiction as she believes that big change in an industry that has been left behind requires not only education and training through traditional settings but also in media, movies and entertainment.

Her Institute’s mission is to bring forth a new way of speaking about and embracing loss within the medical, corporate and social environments.

Her work has been featured at ABC News, Washington Post, Maria Shriver and the White House Blog. She currently works and lives in Austin, Texas with her husband Eric, their daughters and their two dogs.

01 Apr 2021Would You Hire a Sexual Healer? 00:42:22

Episode Overview

We get help from a lot of experts when there’s a problem or a challenge in our lives- chiropractors for the back, therapists for our emotions, accountants for our finances- but what do you do when your particular concern is sexuality- a topic that is still shrouded in taboo? If you can’t experience arousal, or orgasm, or don’t know how your body (or your lover’s body)  works,  would you be willing to get some coaching? Would you hire a sexual healer? And, what is a sexual healer anyway?

My guest today is Adam Hunter Bauer, who’s been committed to healing through many modalities, including sacred sexuality for almost forty years.  Now, there are a lot of flavors of people who do sexuality coaching, sexual surrogacy, or sex therapy out there- and we are about to learn some of the differences. In this episode, he opens up about the tender task of helping women and couples feel and connect in this vital realm.

Sexuality is a vital part of life for all but the few truly by-design asexual people.  For most of us, it’s an area of connection, joy and pleasure that we can tap into our whole lives long.

A sexual healer might help you connect with your body, connect with your breath, unwind old stories,  heal trauma in the body, explore new ways of touching and being present, and see what opens up for you.

And, possibly, no matter what our mothers might think, we might reach out to someone who’s devoted a part of their lives to gaining knowledge to help us out here- dakas, dakinis, sex therapists, sex surrogates or sexual healers.

We cover:

  • Marketing Body Shame
  • Healthy Sexual Conversations
  • Transformational Bodywork
  • What a sexual healing session might look like
  • Identifying a healer with clean energy
  • Cultivating discernment
  • Seeking sexual help while in a relationship

Sexual Debut is a campaign to reframe the word "virginity" so young women don't begin their sexual journey at a deficit, feeling like they have lost or given something up. Your sexual debut can happen many times, in many ways, and at any age -- it doesn't have to be your first time doing something, but it is a pinnacle moment that you felt most like you in relation to your sexuality. That's a cause for celebration -- and there should be cake! Men Who Take Baths is transforming the culture of masculinity from the bubble bath.

In this episode, We Cover:

25 Nov 2021Life in the G-Zone00:27:01

Thank-full can be a state of being, and gratitude a way of walking in the world. Our minds become habituated to our surroundings and often forget to pay attention- as a result a plethora of ambient blessings fade into the background. Living as Thanksgiving does wonders for your spirit and bodymind: studies show that a gratitude practice can get people off of antidepressants, accelerate healing after surgery, and draw people closer together. Plus it just opens the door to living with more wonder and awe and reverence.

We've done a special episode of the pod today, one I hope you will listen to lying down, with a pen and paper nearby. The episode features an original backing track from Mornsong, a dozen short contributions from friends articulating what they are grateful for, and a guided reflection for you to follow along with.

Drop down into the Gratitude Zone, the G-Zone, maybe before you get into the F-zone. Um, that's the Family Zone.

With all love, we are grateful for you,

Christine and Team

With special thanks to Nico (Mornsong), Adam Bauer, John Shiva Gray. Dream Mullick, Michael Schutzler, Leila Towry, Elizabeth Walsh and Mark Whitwell for offering their thanksgivings.

We cover:

About:

Jackie Rotman is the Founder and CEO of Center for Intimacy Justice (CIJ), a nonprofit organization that is currently working to change policies at tech platforms to allow health ads for women and people with vulvas - which are frequently censored today. Jackie holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, MPA from Harvard Kennedy School, and BA in Public Policy from Stanford.

Jackie led an investigation, released in 2022 in 60 media outlets, demonstrating systemic censorship by Facebook (Meta) of women’s health advertisements. Jackie has also written investigative op-eds and other writing in New York Times and Boston Globe Magazine.

Jackie is a social entrepreneur, who has led three organizations. She previously founded, at age 14, and nationally expanded, an organization that has provided free dance programs to over 25,000 youth across 25 U.S. cities. During her MBA at Stanford, Jackie worked in women's health investing with Rhia Ventures and Tara Health Foundation, and for a Silicon Valley venture capital fund -- where she drove financial, market and competitive analysis for investments in contraception technology and in sex education.

Center for Intimacy Justice (CIJ) is a non-profit organization rewriting the rules of business to propel sexual health and wellbeing for women and people with vulvas. CIJ’s is currently leading a multi-pronged, strategic approach to create policies at tech platforms that allow women’s sexual health ads. In January of 2022 CIJ released a report in New York Times and 60+ media outlets demonstrating that of 60 women's health businesses CIJ studied that attempted to advertise on Facebook, 100% of them experienced Facebook rejecting ads – and 50% experienced Facebook suspending their accounts. 09 Jun 2022Bearing Witness Series: Religion and the Feminine00:22:03

For this month, we will be doing a series called “Bearing Witness” where we dive deep into sexual abuse around the world that causes religious & war trauma, shame, exploitation, and irreplaceable damage to the lives of millions of people. Host Christine Mason will be sharing excerpts and her thoughts on the origins of the early church from Margot Anand’s book, “The Art of Sexual Magic”.

We invite you to tune in next week as Christine sits down with Sandy Kirkham, a brave survivor who had shed light on years of mental, and sexual abuse she experienced. She was targeted and groomed at sixteen for sexual services by a married youth minister, and then when she asked for help, she was blamed and ex-communicated. Sandy also directs us to all of the many organizations helping people to leave abusive sects, heal from clergy abuse, and reclaim spirit for themselves.

Another episode in this series is an interview with one of Britain’s leading foreign correspondents, bestselling author, and inspirational speaker, Christina Lamb OBE, her groundbreaking book Our Bodies, Their Battlefields, What War Does to Women.  she gives voice to women in conflict, exposing how in modern warfare rape is used by armies, terrorists, and militias as a weapon to humiliate, terrify and carry out ethnic cleansing. She will also share with us some stories about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

30 Jun 2022 Love, Liberation and Bodily Autonomy00:11:46

As an intimate wellness brand for people with vulvas, Rosebud Woman denounces the recent SCOTUS decision to deny a woman’s basic human right to bodily sovereignty in the United States of America. This ruling allows regressive and misogynistic states, dominated by men, to codify forced birth, which at its essence is womb slavery. This decision will kill women: it is no less than murder via religious dogma and political repression.

Every informed healthcare organization treating women has stated that this decision is bad for women, including the American College of Obstetrics and GynecologyThe American College of Nurse MidwivesNurse Practitioners in Women’s Health, the American Academy of Sexuality Educators, The International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health- as well as anti-sexual violence organizations such as the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, among thousands of others. On the “other side”: politicians and white evangelical protestant preachers. This decision is not only bad for women, it’s bad for men, it’s bad for children and families, and it’s bad for the country.

We see a future where comprehensive sexuality education, a full range of readily available birth control methods and a complete medical toolkit for women’s sexual and reproductive health are the norm. To us, full spectrum medical care includes period equity, fertility support, pregnancy termination, healthy pregnancy, birth and postpartum care, female sexual wellness, rape and sexual violence prevention and care, and menopause care. We see a world where women’s choices for their bodies are unquestioned by governments and churches. We support the Women’s Healthcare Protection Act, which takes this issue out of the now very partisan courts and into the legislature.

We note that the procreative yes is more likely to come in a world that is welcoming to children after they are born. A world that is economically supportive of families, with health systems, educational systems, and ecosystems that provide the hope of a positive future for all beings. Perhaps those that would overrule women’s health experts might instead focus on creating a country more worthy of bringing children into, where they don’t go hungry, aren’t debt slaves in exchange for a functional education, and aren’t killed at school, the grocery store, in church or at the movie theater by men wielding assault rifles: a truly pro-life world.

We remain committed to creating beautiful products, accurate educational materials, and inspiring content for a full, happy, self-determining sensual, sexual and reproductive life in a female body.

Our community honors the deep evolutionary wisdom of the feminine, the natural intelligence of women’s bodies, and trusts women to make the right choices for themselves and their families.

Join Christine in this episode on reconciling with our earthling selves, letting ourselves be enveloped by the Gaiasphere, and the link between the personal and the planetary.

We talk about how psychology as we know it has put far too much emphasis and pressure on the interior self and left the interconnecting field and ecology of the collective out of the picture, and how changing that can make all of us more sane and healthy. We talk tenderness, wonder, awe, Hippocrates, Balinese indigenous farming rituals, practices for reconnecting, the new animism and more.
