08 Jun 2022102: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN - 40th Anniversary! - With Special Guests, Laura Banks & Stan Woo!02:56:01

On Episode 102 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 40th anniversary of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN! This is the Star Trek film which saved the franchise in 1982, and is considered to be the best film of the franchise by many a Trekkie (including Curtis)! Assisting Curtis in this endeavor are two very special guests...

First of all, there's LAURA BANKS, the actress who portrayed Khan's Navigator on the stolen USS Reliant. Laura shares a lot of great behind the scenes info on the making of the film, as well as her brief relationship will William Shatner; all of which is more intricately detailed in her upcoming book, Close Encounters With Captain Kirk: The Making of Star Trek II (and the Rest of It) as well as her Interview with Shatner on her Podcast!

Also, legendary filmmaker STAN WOO chimes in and shares his fandom of the franchise, this film, and how all of it inspired him to make his own Star Trek fan film starring George Takei entitled YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL! Back on Episode 090 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrated this fan film with John Atkin, who first heard about the unfinished film in 1987 via Starlog Magazine Issue #119 and contacted Woo about it in 2010. Together they recruited a team of volunteer professionals to help finish the project. So the latter part of this episode serves as a bit of a part 2 to Episode 090!

Additionally, Mr. Retrovere shares this week's Retro News segment.

Incidentally, you may help the RetroZest podcast by purchasing a unique STAR TREK T-Shirt or two (many different designs and colors!) from our store at store.retrozest.com/startrek.

Assisting in this endeavor is a very special guest; the actor who portrayed the program "Ram" (as well as his user Roy Kleinberg) in the film, DAN SHOR! Dan shares stories about the making of TRON, as well as the rest of his career. He also touches on his involvement in TRON: THE NEXT DAY (a bonus feature on the TRON: Legacy DVD and Blu-Ray releases) and (hopefully) in the upcoming third film in the TRON franchise. He also talks about his roles in Wise Blood, Strange Behavior, Kansas' "Fight Fire With Fire" music video and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Dan is the founder of Shodavision in NYC.

After the discussion with Dan, Curtis' high school classmate TODD HOBBS joins the conversation. Todd and his little sister were extras in the Flynn's Arcade scene in TRON; so, he shares some additional behind-the-scenes nuggets. Todd also talks about his friendship with the former Hollywood power couple Sheldon Bull and Karen Hall, as well as his son Parker's role in a roller skating routine in S2E2 of the DC Comics HBO Max series Doom Patrol.

There's also a short commemoration of AUTOMAN, a 1983 ABC Television series which was inspired by TRON. Curtis' friend Chris Cooling of the ForgottenTV Podcast dedicated Episode #39 of his show to this short-lived series which starred Desi Arnaz Jr. and Chuck Wagner.

Additionally, Mr. Retrovere shares this week's Retro News segment, along with an editorial segment by Aaron Martel and Ray Zimmer of the Ridiculous Rock Record Reviews (R4) Podcast celebrating the 35th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction by Guns 'N' Roses. It is the third film in the Star Trek franchise and is the second part of a three-film story arc that begins with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and concludes with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). Famously, Jesse also wrote the hit song “Walk on Water”, which was recorded by Eddie Money. He also toured with Eddie, and wrote and toured with REO Speedwagon as well. The list goes on and on as it pertains to the artists with whom Jesse has worked… Bad English, Guitar Shorty, Patty Smyth, and the McAuley Schenker Group to name just a few. In 2005 Harms purchased Marin Music Center in Novato, California which he operated until he sold it in 2019.

28 Feb 2022090: YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL - The History of the '80s STAR (Studded) TREK Fan Film! - With Special Guest John Atkin01:36:01

On Episode 090 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the upcoming release of the Star (Studded) Trek Fan Film YORKTOWN: A TIME TO HEAL! Production on this now legendary 8mm film featuring heavy-hitters George Takei and James Shigeta began in 1985 and abruptly stopped (unfinished) in 1987, 35 years ago as of the posting of this podcast episode in 2022. It centers around the activities of a sister ship of the USS Enterprise, the USS Yorktown, upon which Lt. Commander Hikaru Sulu serves as First Officer. For over 20 years, the unfinished film was put on hiatus. However, in 2010, a Trek fan named John Atkin (who first heard about the film in 1987 via Starlog Magazine Issue #119) contacted producer Stan Woo about the unfinished film, and together they recruited a team of volunteer professionals to help finish the project. The scenes which were never filmed in the 1980s, featuring an attack on the USS Yorktown, were filmed in Vancouver in 2013. Contributors include other Star Trek Fan Film creators like George Kayaian of Starship Antyllus and Todd Haberkorn of Star Trek Continues!

So now, the film is FINALLY finished 35 years later! It will be released on YouTube and Vimeo on April 5 of this year, which in the ST universe is known as First Contact Day. The finished film also features a song by Canadian artist RAYNA entitled "Into the Unknown" during the end credits. So to celebrate, the man who teamed up with Stan Woo to complete the film, Mr. John Atkin, is Curtis' very special guest on this landmark 90th episode of the RetroZest podcast! John has a lot of fun info to share about the film and his involvement in its final completion. You're in for a big time treat if your a Trek fan!

09 Apr 2021054: Top 7 Classic Rock Callbacks on SONIC BOOM & MONSTER by KISS!00:29:30

On Episode 054 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis discusses in detail how the final two albums by the American rock band KISS seem to contain a total of at least 7 callbacks to classic rock songs from the 1960s through the 1980s (by AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Mountain, Krokus, Sammy Hagar and Poison).

It began with the original television series in 1978, and was followed by a short-run sequel series (Galactica 1980), a line of book adaptations, original novels, comic books, a board game, video games and a reboot series.

Assisting Curtis in this endeavor with an exclusive interview is the composer and conductor of the score for BSG, STU PHILLIPS! Stu and Curtis had a great discussion about the music score for BSG, and the many other aspects of his long career.

With Colpix Records, Stu produced high-charting hits for James Darren, Nina Simone, The Skyliners, Shelley Fabares, and The Monkees. He also furnished music for Columbia's television series, including The Donna Reed Show (with Fabares) and The Monkees. In the mid-1960s, he worked for Capitol Records and created, produced and arranged for the easy listening studio orchestra the Hollyridge Strings. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phillips continued scoring films and television series including music for the films Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Seven Minutes (1971) and the television series Get Christie Love!. In 1974, he began working at Universal Studios scoring television series; Glen A. Larson made extensive use of his compositions. During this time, he scored music for the television series Switch, McCloud, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, Quincy M.E. and (of course) Battlestar Galactica. He also composed music for the television series The Amazing Spider-Man. After moving to 20th Century Fox Television, Stu composed music for The Fall Guy and Knight Rider.
