If you find yourself deep in the trenches of teacher burnout, you're not alone. The demands of modern education can feel like an ever-expanding tree, with branches of stress, anxiety, and exhaustion stretching in all directions. Perhaps you've tried various strategies, self-care routines, or even sought advice from colleagues, and yet, the burnout persists. If this sounds familiar, I have an important revelation for you: it's highly likely that you've been treating the symptoms rather than addressing the true core cause of your burnout.

In this episode, we will dig deep to discuss how teacher burnout is like a tree with branches of stress, anxiety, and exhaustion stretching in all directions, but most importantly how the solutions to your burnout struggles are found in understanding the root reasons behind your exhaustion and overwhelm. 03 Oct 202374. Teacher Workload or Workaholism: What's the Real Issue?00:28:51

Are you a teacher who finds themselves burning the midnight oil, grading papers, and crafting lesson plans long after the school day officially ends? If so, rest assured, you're not alone. In the world of education, it's all too common to unintentionally become the teacher who takes work home, spending precious hours each night immersed in grading or planning. It wasn't in your initial career plans, was it?

Recent statistics reveal a stark reality. Four out of five teachers report that their workload has increased – a fundamental shift in the daily life of educators. Some teachers are grappling with as many as 27 additional hours of work without any increase in pay, which is time taken away from personal lives, hobbies, and well-deserved relaxation.

Imagine having just 30 minutes of planning time each day – it becomes virtually impossible to efficiently handle all your tasks. And what's the consequence of this relentless cycle? It often leads to teachers becoming workaholics.

That's why in this episode, we're here to explore why teachers often become workaholics, how to identify if you're one of them, and most importantly, the actionable steps you can take today to reclaim your work-life balance and reignite your passion for teaching, even amidst rising demands and responsibilities.

24 Sep 2024114. How to Help Struggling Students Without Burning Out with Special Guest Alyson Young00:31:09

We all want to be the best teacher we can possibly need. But meeting every student's unique needs can take a toll on us and lead to burnout, especially if our students who are struggling start to act out.

In this episode, Alyson Young is joining me to chat about the challenges students with ADHD and Dyslexia face in traditional classroom settings and how teachers can best support these students. She also shares insights into the misconceptions surrounding ADHD and Dyslexia, how to identify struggling students, ways to support both younger and older students. She also dives into the importance of building relationships with students and how teachers can better equip themselves to help their students with ADHD or Dyslexia.

Alyson Young is the founder of The Learning Lab. She has a rich education, psychology, and sociology background, and has taught in public, private, and charter schools. Through her diverse experience, she's witnessed many intelligent children struggle due to inappropriate instruction, leading to frustration, anxiety, and sometimes behavioral problems. This realization sparked her passion to explore the Science of Reading, an area that was often neglected in traditional education systems. Alyson understood that these children weren't struggling because they weren't smart or trying hard enough, but because the educational approach just wasn't aligned with their unique learning styles. Determined to change this, she set out to create The Learning Lab, a place where children's learning styles were acknowledged and embraced. Known for being a mover and a shaker, her primary mission is to uncover how each child learns best and then devise a tailored plan to help them experience success.

11 Oct 202221.Challenging Teacher Burnout and The "Good" Teacher Narrative with Special Guest Caitlin Smith00:35:12

EPISODE 21

Have you ever considered what it means to actually be a "good" teacher? Have you felt guilty when you set boundaries or put yourself first? If you are a teacher in America currently, let me guess...you promptly stated a "yes." Self-care and prioritizing yourself, changing this "good" teacher narrative isn't easy...but as today's guest will share with you - it's definitely worth it!

As a veteran educator of 11 years, I know how hard it is to stop letting what you think "good" teachers do stand in your way of sustaining your career doing what you love. We have these limiting beliefs that just seem impossible to get through. Some of us think of self-care as bath bombs or mani/pedis but it's so much deeper than that. Today's guest has been disrupting these ideas with her business and I can't wait for you to meet her.

Caitlin Peay Smith is a former teacher with over ten years of experience in North Carolina. She has a Master’s Degree in Curriculum & Instruction and another in Teaching English as a Second Language. She is the owner of How To Get Away With Teaching, LLC, a self care brand that disrupts society’s expectations of teachers and moms by prioritizing mental health and wellness. How To Get Away With Teaching also provides mental health resources, mood-boosting wellness goodies, speaking engagements, and a subscription box curated as a reminder for teachers to prioritize themselves.

31 Jan 202337. Reigniting Passion for Teaching with Student Engagement & Classroom Transformations with Special Guest Natalie Blackman00:23:52

Are you a teacher who is burnout or feeling overwhelmed, disengaged, and defeated? Finding our unique strengths in our classroom, in our lives, and in our job can really improve our overall sense of well-being and finding our passion. Not everyone was meant to be a teacher, but I believe that if you are here or listening to this podcast then there is a reason you wanted to make an impact in a classroom and finding that unique strength that you hold can be the difference between surviving and thriving in your career.

That's why I am excited to have Natalie Blackman as a guest in this episode to chat about how she ignited her passion for teaching with her creativity through student engagement and classroom transformations.

Now here's a little known fact that not enough people are talking about. While there are a ton of well-being practices in our world, there is evidence and research that shows how engaging in everyday creative behaviors for just 15 minutes can shift not only your motivation but your overall wellbeing. Simply making the rephrased statement of "I'm working on finding my passions again" instead of "I'm so burnt out I have no idea what I like or who I am anymore" can make a huge improvement in reigniting that passion. Scientifically speaking, the antidote to burnout isn't just sitting around and doing nothing; it's making space for things that give you joy. Creative flow is restorative. Natalie is the epitome of merging her creativity into her classroom.

Natalie Blackman, who you might know as The Teaching Files on social media is a 6th grade math and student leadership teacher and coach, who is passionate about student engagement. Her love of iced coffee, school supplies, and reality T.V. is evident in her energy, love, and ideas for creating activities, lessons, and resources that reach students and make learning & teaching fun again.

07 Jul 202360. Unlocking Classroom Success: 4 Types of Systems You Need to Stress Less & Sustain Your Career [Summer Self-Care Series] with Special Guest Samantha Holcomb00:26:40

The Power of Systems for Beating Teacher Burnout

Are you a teacher struggling to get out of teacher burnout? Long hours, demanding responsibilities, and the constant juggling act of managing a classroom can take a toll on even the most passionate educators. But what if there was a way to alleviate some of that stress and sustain your career in the long run? In this episode, Samantha Holcomb joins us as we chat all about the transformative power of teacher systems and how they can be your secret weapon in combating burnout while unlocking classroom success.

Supporting Teachers: How Systems Can Help Reduce Burnout and Enhance Success

Most teachers have a routine or two that they run in their classroom, but routines and systms are very different. Systems are what you need. By implementing strategic systems, you can regain control, streamline your workflow, and find more joy in teaching. In this episode, we explore four types of systems specifically designed to support teachers in reducing burnout, enhancing productivity, and fostering a sustainable career.

Sam Holcomb went from the world of engineering to high school science teacher, and it was hard! That first year of teaching she had a 2 year old and 2 month old with 7 middle school math and science preps to balance. Most weeks were completely stressed and sleep deprived until she made the connection that the engineering and lean efficiency systems from her "previous life" would be the tools to simplify the time and energy spent on seemingly endless to-do lists. Now in year 6, and having to learn 16 different courses to teach, shes determined to make sure everyone can implement simple systems to their classroom and home life!

04 Apr 202346. Is ChatGPT the Future of Teacher Burnout Prevention? [SUSTAINABILITY SERIES]00:26:10

Not only do you have to lesson plan, do random administrative tasks, email parents and students, keep up to date on grading, but you have to manage behavior and actually teach. If you're like most teachers, that means you are constantly piled with more and more to do. It can be really overwhelming.

A lot of days you probably don’t have the energy to get it all done. So you leave it all for the next day, starting your day in a tizzy of stress. This means you start the day feeling behind. But what if you had your own personal assistant to make your decision making processes, emails, and lesson plans streamlined within a matter of seconds?

In this episode, we're going to dive deeper into some of the reservations that teachers have about utilizing Artificial Intelligence like ChatGPT, how to get good responses from your prompting of Chat GPT, and my favorite ways to utilize it to reduce teacher burnout, job creep, and decision fatigue. This tool can revolutionize the way we teach, learn, and get stuff done!

23 Aug 202213. 3 Powerful Tips for Completing the Beginning of the School Year Stress Cycle00:17:49

EPISODE 13: I made a Tiktok recently that had over 1200 educators feeling like I was speaking to their souls.  It was all about how our brains can create patterns from situations we’ve been in previously.  The example I gave was the stress response that we have when entering our buildings at the beginning of school after we left in the stress cycle before summer break.  Our brains don’t know the difference.

This is why I think it is so powerful to understand the stress cycle and the five distinct phases of the stress cycle.  So in this episode, I'm teaching you a little bit of neuroscience but then giving you 3 powerful tips for completing the beginning of the school year stress cycle so you are actively preventing and recovering from teacher burnout.

Maybe you've tried everything under the sun to get this thing in check and nothing seems to work? Don't worry - you are NOT ALONE! One thing no one ever talks about is how the chemicals in our brain from stress can actually get us addicted to it. In this episode, I am talking about how stress can be addictive, the signs you may be a stress addict, and how this can impact us as educators and keep us in the cycle of burnout.

12 Mar 202497. From Student Apathy to Active Learning: Innovative Strategies for Reigniting Teacher Passion & Engaging Students with Special Guest Dr. Diondraya Taylor00:26:18

One of the reasons that students are apathetic and disengaged is because they don’t see the point or value in learning.

We’ve talked in this short mini-series about apathetic students and disengagement and some real strategies and mindset shifts we can make as educators to reduce the burnout from these types of behaviors.

We need a way to reignite our passion but also to intrinsically motivate students to see the value in life-long learning. Last week we talked about adding productive struggle to our classrooms to support students in building the life skills necessary, but this week, I want us to get into the nitty gritty of taking this a step farther and implementing project-based learning strategies that can transform the way students see the value in their education. Where we shift from the traditional 'sit and get' method to a more hands-on, minds-on approach where students aren't just passive recipients but active participants.

That’s why in today’s episode, we chat with Dr. Diondraya Taylor, who is the founder adn CEO of Mindset & Milestones - a social enterprise that helps schools and youth organizations create real-world learning programs using project-based learning. They provide a weekly project newsletter for teachers and program development services for admin who want to take their schools to the next level. Dr. Taylor fell in love with entrepreneurial thinking through her roles with different startups, and this is where she recognized that applying problem-solving to the real world is an amazing tool for educators to encourage innovation and ambition in their students. Dr. Taylor is also a triple Bruin having graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in psychobiology and entrepreneurship, a Master’s in Education, and a Ph.D. in Education and Organizational Change. Between her business and her research, she is committed to the preparation of youth for the future of work and transforming classrooms into spaces for real-world learning.

Stress as a teacher is something you just can't get away from. It's bound to happen but in order to avoid burnout and sustain your career, we have to take steps to mitigate it in realtime.

My friend, who you might know as Educator Andrea on Tiktok & Instagram, actually gained some social media notoriety for her hilarious classroom stories, but what you might not know is that she has her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. Her research and dissertation was all about factors that impact teacher attrition most. What might surprise you is that it was not the class size, it was not the grade level, but it was overwhelmingly one specific area, which we will talk all about in this episode.

In this episode, we talk all about her journey from teacher to professor, her research and dissertation about what could help teachers sustain their careers as educators, and we also chat our experiences in the classroom to let you know you're not alone.

05 Mar 202496. Unlocking the Power of Productive Struggle: How to Transform Student Apathy into Active Learning with Special Guest Mona Iehl00:37:43

If you've ever faced the challenge of staring at blank faces of your uninterested and disengaged students, you know how hard it is to spark their curiosity. Actually getting them to take action is a struggle in and of itself, but what if I told you there's a transformative approach that could flip the switch from apathy to engagement? That’s exactly what we're diving into in today’s episode, where we explore the game-changing strategy of teaching productive struggle.

This isn’t just about getting students to just pay attention; it’s about empowering them to embrace the challenges of learning head-on. But how, you ask? How do we transform struggle into a force for engagement? How do we make our classrooms a place where mistakes are not just tolerated but celebrated as stepping stones to learning? That's exactly what my special guest, Mona Iehl from Mona Math, and I discuss today - what exactly productive struggle is, how it helps to bridge the gap between apathy & action, and practical steps that we can take to weave productive struggle into the fabric of our teaching, regardless of what subject we teach.

Mona is a former math avoider, teacher & instructional coach in Chicago. Her passion for math came when she discovered how to engage every student in a subject she, too, disliked. Through intentionally changing her math class to help students BE mathematicians using a student centered approach math came alive for Mona and her students. Now Mona collaboratively coaches teachers in building a math culture through rigorous student centered math instruction. You can listen to Mona every Monday on her podcast, Honest Math Chat.

26 Sep 202373. Reignite Your Passion for Teaching with Autonomy & Kick Outdated PD to the Curb with PoppD00:30:21

Did you know that a study by the National Center for Education Statistics found that teachers who reported having more autonomy in their classrooms tend to experience lower levels of burnout? Isn't it cool how having the freedom to choose your teaching methods and make decisions in your classroom can actually be a super effective way to fight off burnout? 📚✨ It's like your secret weapon for staying energized and excited on your teaching adventure!

But we don't always have that freedom, do we? Many teachers, including myself, have been signed up for professional development that has nothing to do with what I want to learn or what area I want to grow in. The good news is, there are ways to navigate this too. We can seek out additional resources and opportunities for professional development that better fit our needs. Like this podcast or even peer learning through a plaform made for teachers by teachers.

Alissa McDonald and Megan Kensington are the cofounders of PopPD, a dynamic online learning platform that makes it easy for creators to develop and share an impactful experience. PopPD's marketplace and community for K12 educators connects teacher leaders and peers with the practical support they need.

20 Feb 202494. How Losing Yourself in Teaching Fuels Burnout: 3 Ways to Detach Your Worth From Work and Find Balance00:27:40

Have you ever felt like your job as a teacher isn't just a part of your life, but somehow, it's started to be your life? You're not alone. Many of us teachers have find ourselves caught in a cycle where the lines between professional and personal blur—a phenomenon psychologists call "enmeshment." It's like our work has slowly woven itself into every fiber of our being, dictating not just how we spend our hours but also shaping our identity and worth.

While being passionate and dedicated is admirable, this enmeshment can steer us toward a dangerous cliff of exhaustion and burnout. It's a reality many of us face, yet struggle to navigate. The question then becomes, how do we untangle ourselves from this intricate web and reclaim our autonomy, ensuring our jobs enrich, not consume, our lives?

In this episode, we talk about how identity loss is a byproduct of burnout, how preserving our personal life is protective, and the three things we can do today to detach our worth and find balance.

07 Mar 202342. Teach Smarter, Not Harder: Achieving Sustainability without Sacrificing Your Life [SUSTAINABILITY SERIES]00:18:17

If you put one hundred teachers in a room together and asked them what would make teaching a sustainable career, they would all give you different answers. However, those answers would all fit within three different areas: Support, Action, and Mindset, which are the Spheres to Sustainable Teaching. If you ask 100 teachers if teaching has ever made them sacrifice their personal life, 95% of them would say that it has. That's why we've got to start working smarter, not harder if we want to sustain this career long-term.

A common misconception that many educators fall prey to is that in order to be an effective educator you have to work longer hours, take work home, and do EVERYTHING you can. It's easy to believe that the more time you put into your work, the better your outcomes will be. However, the truth is that working longer hours often leads to burnout and ultimately hinders your effectiveness as a teacher. In this episode, we will bust this myth and give you the keys to shifting your mindset in the second episode of The Sustainability Series.

19 Jul 20226. The Game Changing Method of Healing Burnout with Inner Work with Ce'arra Richards00:31:21

EPISODE 6  Are you still struggling to get a hang of this burnout recovery thing?  Some people can implement some strategies and feel a little better, but often times one very important thing is missing.

Inner work.  Before you can bring your best self into your classroom, you need to ensure that you are regularly monitoring yourself for signs of destructive behavior that end up cycling in burnout.  This is the last episode in the Summer Self-Care for Burnout Recovery Series and the perfect end to this specific series because without this, none of the rest will really matter.

When it comes to recovering from burnout, there are lots of different methods for inner work and there are many reasons why it is important.  We are covering all of that and more in today's episode and I brought on Ce'arra Richards to join in on the conversation.

Ce’arra Richards is a First Grade Teacher who believes that teachers can Trojan Horse the archaic and failing education system from the inside out by taking rebellious and radical personal responsibility; using inner work to heal. Ce’arra believes that inner child work heals the teacher; therefore impacting the humanization of self and students. Ce’arra has spent eight years teaching first grade at a rural, Title 1, public school; as well as seven years combined as a paraprofessional educator, school secretary, and district grants manager/writer. Although Ce’arra experienced considerable adversity throughout her childhood, through extreme dedication and discipline, Ce’arra put herself through college to reach her dream of becoming a teacher. Ce’arra has also worked extensively to heal her trauma, including her inner child and is currently sharing with teachers how this healing directly affects teaching, reignites passion, prevents burnout, and will reform the failing education system from the inside out.

18 Apr 202348. Transforming Teacher Burnout: From Leaving the Classroom to Rediscovering Fulfillment with Special Guest Amber Harper00:43:16

Is it that time of the year to sign your teaching contract and you just don't know what to do? Are you confused - thinking how much you loved teaching but now it just doesn't seem feasible? Maybe you wonder if you've reached the point of no return. I get it. And while I love supporting teachers in reigniting their passion for teaching, I love supporting teachers in recovery from burnout even more. That means, I'm never going to tell you to stay in a profession if you are ready to hang up the towel. I want to help you recover from burnout - however that looks for you. And I realize that some teachers may not want to stay in it longterm and that's perfectly fine! Actually, I recommend exploring your options so that you can bring passion and joy back into your life.

That's why I am interviewing my good friend Amber Harper, who you might know as The Burned In Teacher in today's episode because she's done just that. She left teaching. Not once but TWICE. In this episode, we are going to ask her the biggest questions around what made her leave, what on earth made her go back, and how she went from burned out to burned in.

Amber Harper is a long-time educator, author, speaker, and podcaster. She’s the founder of  www.burnedinteacher.com and author of Hacking Teacher Burnout which gives struggling teachers a path to follow as they navigate their way out of burnout. Amber is a Teacher Burnout Coach working with educators to help them grow through their burnout and take their next, best steps toward what they want from their career in education and in life.

24 Jan 202336. Teacher Pep Talk: Slay the Sunday Scaries00:22:04

Have you ever spent your Sunday freaking out about your week ahead? Scrambling to finish last minute lesson plans or meal plan for the week ahead? Ruminating about all the what if's?

Did you know that literally 80% of professionals experience the Sunday Scaries, according to a LinkedIn survey. That number is astronomical but does not even account for the educational professionals who experience this, which is probably closer to like 95%.

Don't worry, I'm not here to tell you that the Sunday Scaries aren't real or that you just have to "stop worrying" (I always hate it when people say that like it's an intellectual decision). I'm here to tell you that I have been there, I've done that, and I'm sharing in this episode a story that I've never shared anywhere else online before. I am, however, here to share with you it's possible to transform your fears and reclaim your weekends. So are you ready to slay those Sunday Scaries?

These pep talk style episodes are my attempt to create a more authentic way for you to connect with me, for you to feel like you have support on your hardest days (even if and ESPECIALLY if you don't have that in your community or schools).  I also created this style in an effort to show you that you are not alone. We are in this together and YOU ARE a RESILIENT TEACHER!

13 Dec 202230. Why Your Teacher Planner is not Going to Solve Your Teacher Burnout Issues (but what will)00:19:01

Teacher planners are a hot commodity. You see your teacher friends come to meetings with their pretty highlighted, color coded, and washi taped pages because planners help you stay on track, right? Statistically speaking, no. A new teacher planner is not going to solve all of your teacher burnout problems.

Instead, it is possible for your planner to be CAUSING you more issues? Don't get me wrong, I love a good planner. My personal favorite way to plan is through digital planning, which I have turned into a complete work flow for all things teaching related. In this episode, I dive into why your teacher planner is not going to get you out of burnout and what we can do to really hack our system and use our planner as a tool to beat burnout.

15 Nov 202381. Template Secrets: Unexpected Ways to Streamline Your Teaching Workflow [Simplify & Systemize Series]00:22:18

Teachers are busy. One day we’re in a college thinking the rest of our life is planned out; the next we’re juggling fifteen thousand tasks as a teacher. In order for us to accomplish everything we need to do, we’re going to need some energy.

The best way to gain energy is through doing more of what you love. But here’s the conundrum - how do you get more done with less available hours in your day?

That's where a simple yet powerful teacher system comes into play. You need a way to identify those repetitive tasks that eat away at your precious hours and find a solution – whether it's automation, delegation, or elimination.

Unleashing Classroom Automation with Templates

One of the most underrated ways to automate your classroom is through templates. And no, we're not talking about those generic templates that leave you feeling uninspired. We're talking about game-changing templates that can revolutionize your classroom, streamline your workload, and give you the energy and time you need to do what you love.

In this episode, we’re diving into the third installment of The Simplify & Systemize Series to unlock some unexpected templates to simplify your teaching life. Whether you're looking to create templates for lesson plans, enhance communication with parents, streamline classroom announcements, or even discover templates for aspects of your teaching routine you might not have considered before – we've got you covered!

But this episode is not just about crafting the usual Excel spreadsheet lesson plan templates. No, we're delving deeper, exploring how templates can transform those relentless, seemingly urgent tasks into powerful, repeatable systems. These templates are your key to regaining control over your teaching workflow in unexpected and innovative ways.

By the time we wrap up, you won't just appreciate the power of templates; you'll have a toolbox full of practical tools and strategies to implement them effectively.

29 Oct 2024118. How ‘Remembering Your Why’ is Gaslighting Teachers and Leading to Burnout—What to Do Instead00:21:05

How many times have you been told to “find your why” or “remember your why” when you are feeling burnt out and exhausted? To be honest, it’s simply not helpful. Knowing your why originally was meant to inspire and encourage teachers but now, it’s become a source of anxiety and guilt for many. But how can we move away from this toxic idea of “remembering our why”?

Teachers are so often told to focus entirely on the students, on the school, on the community, on the difference they’re making, etc. The thing is, when you are focusing solely on everyone else and taking on more and more responsibilities, there is no room for taking care of us as individuals. In this episode, I am sharing how we can move away from these toxic ideas and redefine our purpose, reclaim our joy in teaching, and how you can find a “why” that fuels you and empowers you instead of draining you

02 May 202350. Prioritizing Mental Health: How Therapy Can Benefit Teachers Experiencing Burnout with Special Guest Clare Welsh00:35:23

Have you hit that point of burnout where you're wondering if it's time to head to the therapist office? Maybe the idea of therapy is scary to you and you just don't know what to expect? I know that when I first set foot in a therapist's office, I was terrified and I knew I just wanted to get help but wasn't sure what exactly to expect. You've probably been there before too and I want you to know that getting help from a licensed professional is not something to be ashamed of. It's understandable to feel nervous or apprehensive about seeking help from a therapist, but it's important to recognize that therapy can be an incredibly powerful tool in managing burnout and prioritizing your mental health.

In this episode, we dive into Clare's story of teacher burnout across seas, how she went from teacher to therapist and discuss topics such as the root causes of teacher burnout, the transformative power of hypnotherapy, and practical tips for finding the right therapist or practitioner for you. We also explore the symptoms of burnout that therapy can help address and provide a quick exercise to calm your nervous system right now.

Clare was an Early Years teacher for 20 years. She initially taught in the UK, then in the Middle East. She suffered with chronic anxiety for years, until a family crisis pushed her over the edge and she suffered from teacher burnout. Quickly followed by a health scare. After resigning in 2020, with no clear idea of what she was going to do, apart from to try to regain her health, she realized her high stress levels had contributed to her health crisis and this led her to train to be a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist and Mindfulness Coach. She actually used all the skills she learned on herself first! She is now happy and healthy, and supports and teaches others how to transform their mental and physical health and well-being through her signature 1:1 program, “The Shift”.

In this episode, we get to chat with Hayley Spira-Bauer about her experiences teaching with disabilities and how she navigated the two in tandem. There are so many AI tools out there that teachers can utilize to reduce the amount of time and mental energy needed to complete some tasks but there are no AI tools that can solve the systemic problems in education or provide human connection. The good news is that just because you may not be able to have this intricate morning routine doesn’t mean you can’t still start your day in a way that helps reduce your stress and prepare you for the day.

Years ago when I realized I was officially burned out, I tried to implement a multi step morning routine like I had read about in a blog and I quickly realized that there was no way it was feasible for me. And I know that I am not alone in that! So if you’re looking for ways to start your day off right without adding the additional stress of a morning routine, I’ve got you covered! In this episode, I am sharing what I have learned since then when it comes to morning routines including why you should focus on intentions over routines, the importance of anchor habits, and finding joy in your day.

25 Oct 202223. Feed Your Energy In and Out of the Classroom with Special Guest Bre Baildon00:27:25

EPISODE 23

In this episode of The Resilient Teacher Podcast, we are talking more about energy levels. Energy levels are sometimes impacted by our mindset, expectations, but it can also be heavily influenced by our overall health and wellness. Because teachers have limited energy due to decision fatigue and stress, it can be difficult to make sustainable changes to things like nutrition which can be used as a TOOL to get our minds and bodies working optimally so that our systems can effectively manage and balance our blood sugar levels, hormones, and all those internal pieces that help our bodies be resilient to stress. Nutrition is a big piece of the puzzle but this episode is NOT about nutrition for weight loss. We are going to be chatting with Bre Baildon, who is my favorite teacher dietician, about how nutrition impacts our energy and stress in and out of the classroom, how to create lasting nutritional change when you don't have motivation, and some ideas for low-prep lunches so you maintain your energy.

Bre is a registered dietitian who helps teachers stop stressing about food or their health so that they can gain more time and energy to do the things they truly want to do. She makes healthy eating practical, delicious, and sustainable for educators to feel better and be present in and out of the classroom. As the wife of an international middle school teacher, Bre has worked with educators and schools all around the world to prioritize all aspects of teacher health and wellbeing.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Concordia College and a Master’s degree in Health & Wellness Coaching from Creighton University.

Ever caught yourself in that late-night teacher's trance, just you and the ceiling after a long day, wondering why your tank feels empty? 🤔 If you're nodding along, know that you're in good company. Teacher burnout has this sneaky way of creeping up on us, even when we're pouring our hearts into what we love. It's like one minute you're on fire, full of passion, and the next, you're questioning if all the effort is worth it. But here's a little secret: burnout doesn't discriminate. It can hit us even when we're in the midst of our teaching passion.

So, what's up with that? 🧠 In today's episode, we're diving deep into our brains during burnout. Why do our brains trick us into feeling all doom and gloom? How do our internal chemical cocktails—dopamine and epinephrine—play into our feelings of fulfillment and motivation (or the lack thereof)? And the real kicker: how can we, as dedicated educators, hack our brain's reward system to reignite that teaching spark?

This isn't your average pep talk. It's a science-backed, actionable guide to flipping the script on burnout. From setting micro-goals that make us feel like champions 🏆 to finding joy in the little wins that keep our teaching flame alive, we're here to unpack how to make teaching sustainable and joyful again.

Ready to hack your way to a happier teaching life? Then this episode is for you!

16 May 202352. Financial Self-Care for Teachers: Strategies to Reduce Stress and Change Your Money Mindset with Special Guest Emily Maretsky00:24:07

One of the most not-talked-about factors of teacher burnout is our finances. Our financial health impacts our overall well-being, alongside physical, emotional, and social aspects. As educators, financial stress can weigh heavily on us, exacerbating burnout. A study by Stanford University found that teachers experience higher levels of economic and financial anxiety compared to other professions. Many teachers struggle to make ends meet, leading to chronic worry and even the need for second jobs.

But there is a way forward. By prioritizing financial literacy and making smart decisions, we can reduce stress levels and gain a sense of empowerment. In this episode, we interview Emily Maretsky, a financial coach specializing in helping educators. Emily shares practical strategies, retirement options, and tips for achieving financial health. Join us as we debunk financial myths, break free from scarcity mindset, and explore how financial self-care is essential for teacher well-being.

29 Aug 202369. How To Set Personal & Professional Learning Goals That Transform Teacher Burnout with Special Guest Melissa Steigerwald00:41:21

Often we think of teacher learning goals as these things that include educational jargon like "rigor" or "learning gap." But if we aren't creating our own professional learning goals, then it's almost pointless.

In this episode, we dive into how Melissa, a teacher just like you (not an influencer or social media teacher) used this podcast to set a professional learning goal to beat the teacher burnout cycle once and for all. As you listen to her story, I'm sure you'll feel a little sense of "Oh, I've been there too" and grab a few ideas to add to your plan to beat burnout this school year. It's a constant process and the process of setting these goals is what leads to reviving that passion for teaching again.

Melissa is a veteran teacher with 20 years experience in the classroom. Out of college, she was hired to teach 4 year old kindergarten in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has been blessed to be able to stay in the same school, grade level and classroom for her entire career. She considers herself to be an ordinary classroom teacher as she does not have any teacher social media presence. Melissa tries to make a difference every day by bringing joy, playfulness and connection to our youngest learners.

Are one of those teachers who saves up all of their sick days, personal days, rarely takes a day off? Maybe you think to yourself - "I can't take a day off work because my class would fall apart." Perhaps you feel like it's not worth it to take your day because you have to prepare for a sub and then you'll fall behind on all the work you do. That it's more work to be out than it is to actually just show up. Or maybe you just feel guilty or pressure to not let your kids down or your co-workers because there is a sub shortage. I get it. I really do, but I want you to know how important it is for you to start taking your personal and mental health days. That's why on today's episode, I brought on Kelsey Sorenson from Wife Teacher Mommy to come chat all about teacher sick days. Seriously, we're diving into some of those mindsets you have that may be keeping you from using your benefits, she's doing a little life coaching to help turn those mindsets around and empower you to prioritize using your benefits, and then she's wrapping it up with spilling the tea on how you can prepare yourself for a sub (like today without any stress or hassle).

Kelsey Sorenson is a former third grade teacher and substitute teacher. She is now a homeschool mom to 3 kids and owner of Wife Teacher Mommy, where she and her team serve Pre-K through 6th grade teachers. Classroom management challenges can leave teachers feeling overwhelmed and frustrated—but what if the key to better behavior isn’t stricter rules, but sensory regulation? In this episode, Dr. Bethany Bilodeau, an expert in human behavior with a Doctorate of Arts in Leadership, shares groundbreaking strategies that help both students and teachers feel safe, stay engaged, and reduce stress in the classroom.

Dr. Bilodeau’s career began as a high school biology teacher in Guam, and since then, she has designed innovative programs to help students thrive academically. In this episode, she explains why traditional classroom management approaches often fall short and how small, simple shifts—like adjusting lighting, incorporating movement, and recognizing positive behaviors—can dramatically improve student engagement and behavior. She also shares insights from her upcoming book, Ease the Pain in the Classroom: A Guide to Safety and Regulation, set to launch in 2025, which provides practical, ready-to-use techniques for educators.

If you’ve ever felt burnt out by behavioral challenges, this episode is packed with doable strategies that won’t add to your already full plate.

28 Mar 202345. 5 Simple Automations to Streamline Teaching & Squash Stress [SUSTAINABILITY SERIES]00:21:04

If you spend hours writing your to-do list and constantly having more and more added to your plate as a teacher...then you more than likely could use some help from one of my favorite tools for reducing stress - (drum roll please) - AUTOMATION. I get a lot of questions from teachers about how to handle job creep, never having enough time, and always feeling a little behind...look, I don't know why no one is talking about it but automation pretty much changed my life. I use automated systems in my teaching career, personal life, and even at home (which sounds robotic but it's not!)

I will tell anyone who listens to me that automation saved my sanity and gave me back the time I needed to spend on my students and living my life. Here's the thing, there are tons of automation tools out there but if you just plug and play random things without intention or purpose, it's just going to be another thing on your list of to-do's. That's why in this episode, we are going to talk about how being spread too thin can impact students and teachers alike, automation as a tool to fix this, and then the five simple ways you can incorporate automation in your classroom today.

07 Feb 202338. Teacher Pep Talk: Finding Your Voice and Fighting Imposter Syndrome00:22:19

Have you ever felt like you just weren't "enough" as a teacher? You may be experiencing imposter syndrome, which is defined as a set of inadequacies that linger in the face of achievement. It is difficult for "imposters" to feel successful or have outside validation of their competence because they are constantly doubt themselves and feel like "a fraud." Yes, unfortunately, imposter syndrome is a real thing, but there are things we can do to stomp it to the curb. Truthfully, we all - myself included - struggle with this at some point in our journey. Therefore, even though your own imposter syndromes may manifest in a variety of ways, in order to find a way to your boundless success, we must tackle it head-on. In today's episode, we're doing just that.

Here’s a list of questions that may indicate that you’re dealing with imposter syndrome:

  • Are you certified in middle school but want to step into a different grade level?
  • Are you a first year teacher and want to try something new or innovative but scared of what veterans will think?
  • Are you wanting to step into a leadership role?
  • Are you ready to retire but still feel like you could bring something vital to the education table?
  • Do you feel unfulfilled in your current role but afraid to step into a new role for fear you may fail? Or not be "good enough?"

If you answered yes to any of the above or if you relate to any of the above, you might be dealing with imposter syndrome. In this episode, I’m going to lay out the action steps you need to kick imposter syndrome to the curb. Before I do, I'm going to share with you my recent imposter infiltration and remind you that you are not alone.

Here's the thing. It does not have to be that way. Striving and perfectionism are not the same thing and in this episode, I am going to share with you a little bit about the post that inspired this episode, give you some tips and strategies to avoiding perfectionism so you can save your career, and then bring that motivation you need to start turning this idea around!
