Sylvia also shares real-life examples of the sponsor/protégé relationship. She stresses that this isn’t a one-way relationship. 00:07:14
I
f you are watching or listening to me now, you have achieved some level of success. And if you are leading others, it is logical and obvious that you are doing some things right.
Yet many leaders feel they have arrived not because of experience, skill and wisdom, but by luck or the ability to “fool” others.
If you ever feel this, welcome to the imposter syndrome.
According to The International Journal of Behavioral Science, researchers estimate that 70% of people have experienced the imposter syndrome.
If you underestimate your knowledge, experience and competence…
When you feel like you are faking it, you live in fear. And it isn’t helpful or factual.
In this episode, I’ll share five simple steps to help combat imposter syndrome.

Beyond the Bias with Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris
00:37:12
Gender bias and inequality in the workplace is not a new problem. Despite its longstanding presence, this problem continues to linger, impacting the professional growth and opportunities of women worldwide. Only 12% of paid executive officers in publicly held companies are women. Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris join Kevin to discuss their approach to addressing this problem. They argue that traditional anti-bias training programs are ineffective. You can’t tell someone, don’t do that. Instead, they suggest eliminating exclusionary behaviors and biases from organizational policies and practices. They also debunk five gender myths, including the idea that women lack ambition, are less self-confident, and cannot handle risks and leadership roles.

Leading with Care (in a Tough World) with Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt
00:36:47
A caring leader cares about the people and the outcomes. A caring leader moves beyond the surface and focuses on the development of the team and continuously improving. Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt join Kevin to discuss the caring leader. Caring leaders ask how they can help by removing barriers or discovering a plan of action, not doing the work. Their mindset shifts from who has the answer to how do we come up with a better outcome?
Key Points
Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt define shallow vs. deep caring.
They discuss the connection between: caring and uncertainty, caring and collaboration, and caring and learning.
Their Story: Bob DeKoch and Philip Clampitt are the authors of Leading with Care in a Tough World: Beyond Servant Leadership. Leadership Lessons from the Great Resignation - Thoughts from Kevin
00:06:26
The great resignation has been all over the press and all in the media. Everyone’s talking about it and many people are participating in it. I recently recorded a video with personal lessons from the great resignation. You can watch that here.
But today we are talking specifically about what the great resignation means for leaders. There are major challenges for every leader and there are also some great lessons. We’ll explore those in the video below.
Today’s episode is the third in my series based on a talk that I gave to a group of sixth, seventh and eighth graders.
During the talk, we discussed several of the ideas in the new culture that they are creating at the school. They call it GRIT. And this week, I am focusing on the third letter, I, which stands for Intellectual Curiosity.

So before we (or should I say ‘they’) get to action, we must realize the emotions they will go through after hearing the feedback.
Once you understand the emotions, there are four steps you can take to help others apply your feedback.

Helping People Change with Melvin Smith
00:35:00
If you lead a department, a team, or a person (or family), you have probably had a coaching moment. Kevin is joined by Melvin Smith, co-author of Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth. Often, we coach to fix something or fill a learning gap. When we coach for compliance, however, we trigger a physiological response that leads to defensiveness and our feedback works against us. Melvin believes we need to start with the person and find out what they want to do/be. We want to trigger a positive physiological response, which opens people up to more creative thinking and sustainable change.
In this episode, Melvin discusses 1. Coaching vs. helping. 2. Emotional attractors. 3. Personal vision statements and balance sheets.
Remarkable Dialogue
Ask yourself: Are you coaching for compliance or with compassion?

Gratitude - Now More Than Ever - Thoughts from Kevin
00:05:21
I won’t go into the brain science, but it is a fact of neurology that the brain cannot be in a state of appreciation and a state of fear at the same time. The two states may alternate, but are mutually exclusive.
So when people say they are too blessed to be stressed, they are actually right.
But let’s step back a moment.
We have plenty of reasons to be stressed. I don’t need to list them all for you here – but I am certain you have a list. And maybe now, our lists seem longer than ever – work, family, external forces and more.
We know that stress and anxiety negatively impact our productivity and relationships – and when we need those things most, we might not be able to access them.
Enter gratitude.
I’ve written and talked about gratitude a lot over the years. Below you will find a link to my collection of articles.
Now I’m urging you to consider gratitude for three simple reasons – now more than ever.
Lessons From Bold Leaders That Changed History with Jan-Benedict Steenkamp
00:35:52
We can use the past to think about leading today and the future. The means may be different (hello social media), yet the principles are similar. Jan-Benedict Steenkamp is Massey Distinguished Professor of Marketing at the University of North Carolina and author. His latest book is Time to Lead: Lessons for Today’s Leaders from Bold Decisions That Changed History. JB looks at leadership through a historical and marketing lens. After all, aren’t leaders trying to brand themselves as someone to follow? JB and Kevin discuss some of history’s most decisive leaders and events and ties it to today’s leadership methods. Leadership Lessons From the Kellogg Brothers with Dr. Howard Markel
00:34:11
In this episode of The Remarkable Leadership Podcast, we get the chance to boost our trivia knowledge with a history lesson. Dr. Howard Markel, the author of The Kelloggs The Battling Brothers of Battle Creek, joins Kevin to discuss the story of the Kellogg brothers; their relationship and the building of an empire. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was the big brother and one of America’s most beloved physicians. In his time, he was a best-selling author, lecturer, health-magazine publisher; and founder of the famed Battle Creek Sanitarium. His youngest brother, Will, who worked with him became the founder of the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, which revolutionized the mass production of food and what we eat for breakfast. Their dynamic and strained relationship help us identify different leadership strengths (and weaknesses) and dependence on each other for success.

What Do You Wear to Work? - Thoughts from Kevin
00:06:45
As long as I’ve been in the workplace, there’s always been a conversation about the dress code. In fact, when I first started working for Chevron, I was handed a copy of “Dress for Success” as part of the onboarding process.
Since then, the conversation has moved from “Casual Friday”…to casual every day…to the day when everyone was sent home to work and the dress code as we knew it changed significantly.
Now before you think this post and this video is about fashion, let me reassure you, it’s not. Instead, in this episode, I’m talking about how what we choose to wear has some pretty big implications far beyond what style of clothing is our favorite.

A Four-Letter Word to Be Careful With - Thoughts from Kevin
00:04:52
In this episode, we’re talking about a four letter word, a four letter word to be careful with.
And that word is lazy.
Lazy is a word of judgment. It’s something that we see inside of their behavior. It’s something that we infer about their intentions.
Like just because someone’s laying on their couch right now, does that necessarily mean they’re lazy? I don’t know. All I know is there’s a difference between judging and observing, and the word lazy is typically used as a word of judgment.
So we use it on others. And then once we’ve labeled them as lazy, it changes our perspective about them and we use it on ourselves. Now, I used to say to myself, if I didn’t get up, when I’d plan to that I’m lazy.
Now I try to remember to say not that I’m lazy but that I didn’t get up when I planned to. Those are two different things. They have two different inferences about myself. And so here’s my point. The word lazy is a label that rarely serves us, whether we’re thinking about ourselves or whether we’re thinking about someone else.
Because the fact is, we’ve all been lazy. But no one is always lazy. Lazy is a choice or maybe a habit, but it’s not a character trait.
Communication is important and persuasive writing is a skill anyone can possess. Colonel Carla Bass joins Kevin to discuss what good writing does. Good writing helps influence. This includes budget approvals, appropriation of funds, and promotions, to name a few. Carla suggests finding the fun in writing. Everyone is a storyteller; you know the journey for your audience.
Key Points
Carla Bass discusses influence as the goal of our writing.
She shares advice on the “right” length of the message and the importance of outlines.
She provides word sculpting tools, like verbs are your friends and don’t use the words that hog space.
Her Story: Colonel Carla D. Bass, USAF (Ret), is the author of the multiple award-winning book Write to Influence! now in its second edition. Throughout her 45-year career (30 in the Air Force and 15 with a federal agency), she composed items sent to Congress, the White House, generals, and ambassadors; hundreds of performance reviews; awards nominations; and budget justifications. Carla’s assignments included Germany, Bulgaria (as the defense and air attaché), Turkey, Korea, and Washington, D.C.
Worth Mentioning: As a squadron commander, Carla transformed her 480-person unit from the most losing in state-wide, professional awards into the one to beat. She developed her writing methodology and taught her troops to write. So successful was her program, she taught thousands of Air Force members for the next 15 years. Her battle cries are twofold: 1) “Powerful writing changes lives” and 2) “Powerful writing is the lifeblood of successful organizations”.
Do Friends and Leadership Mix? - Thoughts from Kevin
00:06:00
This is a question that I get asked a lot and I think in order to answer this question, you have to understand the answer to another question first:
How do you define friend?
So think about this a little bit and then “join me”on the video to answer the original question about friends and leadership.

Spending time with younger people and thinking beyond your experience can help you stay open-minded and engaged.

How to Stop Complacency and Improve Performance with Len Herstein
00:37:13
Are you successful? Do you know that success can lead to complacency? Complacency can decrease productivity, create mistakes, and impact the bottom line – it costs money. Len Herstein sits down with Kevin to discuss the dangers of complacency and why vigilance enables us to remain successful. Self-awareness is a start. When we become predictable, either personally or in our organizations, it becomes easier for a competitor to take over. We need to be strategically unpredictable and develop habits that minimize overconfidence.
Key Points
Len Herstein discusses complacency vs. vigilance and how we notice if we are becoming overconfident.
He shares the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act).
He talks about metrics and unintended consequences.
His Story: Len is the author of Be Vigilant! Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. He is on a mission to empower organizations and individuals to protect the success they’ve worked so hard to achieve. Len has a 30+ year history in business, marketing, and entrepreneurism–working in brand marketing for Coca-Cola, The Campbell Soup Company, and Nabisco before founding Manage Camp (a business conference producer).
Worth Mentioning: In 2015, Len answered a higher calling to public service when he became a Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy in Douglas County, Colorado, where he works up to 850 hours a year as a state-certified peace officer on the patrol team – for free. Len quickly realized he was learning valuable lessons through his law enforcement training that applied directly back to his business. The most important lesson, and one of the very first he learned, was the concept that complacency kills, and vigilance saves

The Connectors Advantage with Michelle Tillis Lederman
00:36:32
Studies show that 92% of people trust referrals and you are four times more likely to buy from someone who was referred. This makes sense to Michelle Tillis Lederman, author of The Connector's Advantage: 7 Mindsets to Grow Your Influence and Impact. In her early career, she realized that relationships are critical to your success, health, and happiness. However, this isn’t all about the warm fuzzies. Connectors have a certain way of thinking and acting that enables stronger connections. Building that skill can get us to faster, easier, and better. Michelle shares with Kevin that when leaders focus on building connections, relationships and loyalty with their teams, they impact the bottom line.
In this episode, Michelle discusses 1. Levels of connectors. 2. The introvert edge. 3. The trust mindset.
Do you ask for the help you need? As a leader, we are often self-reliant. The success of our teams and organizations rests on our shoulders, we better be the ones making the decisions. Todd Palmer hit rock bottom and needed to redefine success. Todd is CEO/Entrepreneur of Diversified Industrial Staffing and the author of From Suck to Success: A Guide for Extraordinary Entrepreneurship. He joins Kevin to talk about his journey of self-awareness and shifting mindsets. He needed to ask for help and to become accountable for his decisions. Once he got over the fear of failure and recognized it as a learning opportunity, he was able to shift the culture of his company. Todd also shares hiring advice and how things have changed (or not) since the pandemic.

What Are You Waiting For? - Thoughts from Kevin
00:05:01
Today I am talking about a lesson I learned in reading a quote from the Theologian John Henry Newman:
“Nothing would be done at all if a person waited until he/she could do it so well that no one could find fault with it.”
And here’s the reality – someone will ALWAYS find fault in one thing or another. But that’s not all bad. What is bad is when we frame it as “fault” and not “feedback for improvement”.
We need to stop waiting and start doing.

Is Right the Right Answer? | Thoughts from Kevin
00:03:49
Are you always searching for the right answer? As leaders, we are often taught to look for definitive answers, but what if the best approach isn't about being right, but being flexible?
In this episode of Remarkable TV, Kevin Eikenberry challenges the idea that there's always a single correct answer. Instead, he encourages leaders to focus on good, possible, or even the best available choices—especially in a complex and uncertain world.

Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Basket - Thoughts from Kevin
00:05:18
Now, you might already know that I grew up on a farm, and so I have plenty of farm phrases in my vernacular. Some of these phrases wouldn’t make any sense to you. But some of those farm phrases are things you’ve either heard before or maybe even heard here on this blog last week. You can watch that episode right here.
So last week we talked about making hay, and today we’re talking about gathering eggs, and specifically about not putting all your eggs in one basket.
Now, I don’t have nearly as much personal experience with eggs as I do with making hay. But think about it for a second. If you’ve got a basket that you’re using to collect eggs and as you’re putting them in one cracks. Well then, you have a problem. Even worse, if you drop the bucket, you lose all the eggs.
So what’s the point for us as leaders? Well, there are several things for us to think about here. And I’m starting the video with one of my favorite thoughts in business: One is a dangerous number.

Leading Customer Loyalty with Sandy Rogers
00:31:54
There is a big difference between satisfaction with a product/service/organization and loyalty. Loyalty shows an emotional commitment. When someone is loyal, they promote for you. Sandy Rogers co-author of Leading Loyalty: Cracking the Code to Customer Devotion and the leader of FranklinCovey's Loyalty Practice. He chats with Kevin about the book and although much has been written about loyalty, this book provides simple, applicable principles, practices and a proven process for earning loyalty from your customers and colleagues and all the important people in your life. There isn’t just one thing. It’s all about listening for the real story, taking responsibility for the real job and following up. We need to move beyond process and empower our people to show empathy. Boosting external and internal loyalty will have an impact on your bottom line.

Creating Customer Value with Rob Markey
00:38:09
We have the tools for accounting principles, and these have remained unchanged for years. Yet we have no real tool to measure customer loyalty, and every bit of cash flow starts with cash from the customer’s pocket. Kevin is joined by Rob Markey. He is the author of a new Harvard Business Review article on how to run a company to maximize customer value, “Are You Undervaluing Your Customers?" He is also the co-author of The Ultimate Question 2.0. Rob believes that customer loyalty and company success go hand in hand. Companies with high satisfaction rankings grow revenues roughly 2.5 times as fast as their industry peers. Leaders need to find ways to get the voice of the customer in front of the entire organization, not just sales or customer service (regardless of the size of the organization.) Rob also shares ways to destroy customer value (a lesson on what not to do).
In this episode, Rob discusses:
Customer value.
Leading for loyalty.
Relationship recovery.

Building Workplaces Fit for Humans with David Brendel and Ryan Stelzer
00:41:08
Unfortunately, many organizations have the mindset that their people are just numbers, data points for financial game. And in the short term, that may work. Ryan Stelzer and David Brendel join Kevin to discuss not only why we need to build workspaces fit for humans (think long term success), but some suggestions on how we get there.
Key Points
David and Ryan discuss the global nature of unfit workplaces.
The importance of psychological safety in the workplace and what it means.
Their Story: Authors of Think, Talk, Create: Building Workplaces Fit for Humans and co-founders of Strategy of Mind, an executive coaching and management consulting firm rooted in non-traditional business subjects like philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science. They help individuals, and the organizations they work for, perform better.
Worth Mentioning: Prior to his work in consulting, Ryan served at The White House as a Presidential Management Fellow during the Obama Administration, where his team was responsible for improving and sustaining high levels of performance across federal agencies. David is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) of the International Coach Federation (ICF). He is an expert in applying cognitive psychology and leadership techniques in executive coaching and corporate training programs.

How to Lead Lightly with Jody Michael
00:37:05
