26 Aug 2022 | #466 - Rhandi Orme: Lessons Learned from a Leadville 100 DNF | 01:25:25
Many times on this show we detail how people achieve some greatest moments in their running career. But running isn't always roses and rainbows. Sometimes it can bring us to our knees.
Rhandi Orme had been dreaming of the Leadville 100 for years. After her fifth son was born 2.5 years ago she decided it was time to make that dream a reality. As an experienced marathoner, trail and ultra runner, and coach, she knew exactly how to prepare for race day. Not only that, she attended two Leadville camps to tryout the course and helped crew her husband to a Leadville 100 finish. After two decades in the sport and a great training cycle she was ready and excited for action.
For 50 miles she was rocking and rolling on the legendarily brutal course. Then everything changed. In this episode Rhandi takes us through the anatomy of a DNF and the numerous lessons learned from a day that brought her to her knees, literally and metaphorically.
Rhandi is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, certified run coach and sports nutrition specialist with 17 years of experience. A three time ultra marathon champion & Sub 24 hour 100 mile finisher. Multiple time Boston and New York Marathon Qualifier. An IRONMAN triathlete and multi length obstacle course racer.

31 May 2022 | #441 - Andy Wacker: Evolution of one of the U.S.'s Top Trail Runners | 00:36:30
Andy Wacker is on the show today and it was an honor to talk to one of America's best runners. Andy's resume speaks for itself (his 2021 accolades are listed below and they career's worth of achievements) and easily puts him in the top tier of the country’s best trail runners.
Andy wasn't always the top of his class, however, He was a walk-on at University of Colorado during some of the school’s prime running years. His time in Boulder had some high points but also some struggles. During those down periods he learned to head to the trails. Those forays away from the team would lead to a paradigm shift as a runner that continues to serve him well today.
2021 was an encapsulation of that journey. Here is how Andy wrote about it in an end of the year post on his Instagram feed:
"2021 has been “A JOURNEY”. If I have learned anything, it is to be grateful for the good days. Be optimistic. Positive thinking can take you so far! BELIEVE. You can and will get through even the darkest days. And after all, 2021 was another great year of running!
I represented USA and placed 2nd in the XTERRA Trail World Championships. I placed third at Birkie Trail Half, Broken Arrow 26k and the Golden Gate Trail Classic. I raced some of the best downhills of my life. Ran my first cirque series race. Doubled at GoPro games and won a race at 10,000ft. I ran one of my fastest times for 15k (45:25) on a windy day. 🏃
I set 14 FKTs: Murphey Loop, Syncline Loop, North Table Mountain, Guana Loop, Marin Headlands, Ralston Creek Trail (out and back), Plymouth Mountain, Mt Audubon, Peak 1, Mount Baldy, Bergen Peak (up and down), Needles Grand Tour.
I ran 28 miles in 6:00 pace at 5,500ft elevation!
But, It hasn’t been all sunshine & rainbows.
I also dealt with pain, injury, frustration, balancing work, race cancellations, sickness and more.
I spent four months without running.
I found new joy biking up mountain roads in Colorado.
So, take nothing for granted. Never give up."

21 May 2020 | #236 - Jen Labesky | 00:51:53
Like many women, Jen Labesky spent most of her life allowing everyone else's opinions of what she "should" be doing, pursuing, or thinking, to chart her course. The result? She ended up feeling completely lost and empty inside. Jen knew she was capable of so much more, but was so caught up trying to be everything to everyone that she didn't have the time to devote, or even the slightest clue how to figure out what she wanted for herself.
In the last few years, life has thrown challenges at Jen one after another and her heart has been broken to pieces. In the past, she would have sat paralyzed with pain. This time around she saw the glimmer of something beautiful in the pain. Something life-changing and crystal clear. Something that made her stand up and say no more 'should's.'"
By stripping away the BS and focusing on what matters to her, she has more energy and power to move fearlessly toward her dreams. Living from a BS-free place of love has given Jen purpose and a simple barometer for every decision she's made since. This includes her passion to pursue running with heart and dedicatin.
Jen is also the co-founder of the GritChicks retreats. These are small group running and outdoor adventure-based getaways for women of all levels of running experience. They have designed these retreats to be a relaxed, fun place for women to come together and share their passion for running, adventure and self-discovery in a space that is separate from our everyday lives and responsibilities. GritChicks retreats are a chance for women to step a little outside of their comfort zones and try new things, while also taking time to clear their minds, dream, set goals and explore the endless possibilities for our lives. It is a time for finding strength and creating memories with friends, old and new!

18 Jun 2018 | #72 Kindal Alysse | 01:04:46
"Failure happens all the time. It happens every day in practice. What makes you better is how you react to it." - Mia Hamm
For Kindal Alysse, 2016 was a dream. She set personal bests at nearly every distanced she raced in running and triathlon. 2017, however, was exactly the opposite. In this episode, Kindal details how she was able to reach her goals and then, when she was rocked by disappointment, how she dealt with it and bounced back.

12 Mar 2018 | #42 Heather Szuba | 00:51:50
Heather Szuba is living the amateur running lifestyle to a “T.” She has whittled down her marathon time from 4:00 hours to 3:12 while working as an engineer and starting a coaching practice. At the age of 24 she came to the realization that she needed to become a healthier person. She started with the elliptical before introducing 10 minute running segments into her routine. Then one day at the gym she was inspired by the goal of running for an hour. From there, her running journey took off. We had a great conversation about all of these things and how to live a balanced life while trying to achieve big running goals. You can follow Heather at www.instagram.com/itsheathersturn or inquire about her coaching services at www.mckirdytrained.com.

09 Dec 2022 | #494 - Ted Jordan: PR's in his 40's and Identifying Marathon Pace | 01:00:47
Today I am psyched to have my good friend, and occasional running partner, Ted Jordan on the show. Ted's journey as an amateur runner began the same way as most folks - he started running a couple times a week to stay fit while in his 20's. Things progressed quickly for Ted in his late 30's when he decided that he wanted to complete a marathon before his 40th birthday. From there, Ted improved every year and isn't slowing down anytime soon. In fact, he set a five minute marathon PR at the Philadelphia Marathon a few weeks ago with a time of 3:36!
In this episode Ted and I talk about improving as we age, how he was able to increase his aerobic base in order to feel strong at the end of marathons, and the methods he uses to determine his marathon pace and pacing strategies.

05 Mar 2025 | #671 - Embracing Balance in Running: Marginal Gains vs. Enjoyment | 00:17:44
In this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast, host Matt Chittim discusses the balance between skill development and enjoyment in running. He emphasizes the importance of marginal gains while also highlighting the need for runners to find joy and adventure in their training. By comparing running to other sports like basketball and golf, Matt illustrates that focusing solely on skill can lead to burnout and a loss of passion for the sport. He encourages listeners to embrace both structured training and spontaneous, enjoyable running experiences.

13 Feb 2023 | #509 - Heather Knight Pech: Breaking Records into Her 60's | 01:01:02
In this episode we are re-airing one of the best conversations in Rambling Runner history, and for good reason.
Heather Knight Pech was once told that her peak was gone. It was in a class she was taking at Stanford 18 months ago. It sparked a deep conversation with her coach, James McKirdy, and her support team.
Dejected, she was reminded that there's simply no chart or metric that can measure the power of the human spirit.
This past weekend, just a few days before turning 61, Heather ran her second fastest half marathon. 1:27:51. A result that is a World's Best for her age group (60-64) and pending American and World Record (1:28:21).
This episode was recorded last spring two weeks after she set the Boston Marathon record in the women's 60-64 age group. A record previously owned by Joan Benoit Samuelson.
Below is what Heather's coach and friend James McKirdy wrote after she ran Boston in 2022. It is perfect I’ve inserted it below:
”If all we did was acknowledge the time on the clock... we'd be giving a standing ovation.
If all we did was acknowledge that a record was broken and that the impossible had been accomplished... we'd be celebrating for weeks and then life would move forward as it does. But the reality is that what Heather Knight Pech accomplished in the Boston Marathon is far more than her finish time of 3:03:47. It's far more than winning the division (60-64). And it's certainly far more than breaking the record held by Joan Benoit Samuelson.
It's been 3 years since since Heather last finished Boston - a race that lives in her soul. It's been a bit over 1.5 years of injury that left Heather wondering if the best was behind her. But the success Heather found on Monday isn't found in the result... it's the in-between time where the story is truly told. The injury. The heartbreak. The self doubt. The loneliness of not being able to do what she is so clearly meant to. But to know Heather is to know what it means to not give up. To know what it means to demand the very best. To know what it means to love with all that you are.
Heather fought her way through this hard time - but she wasn't alone. She found the best doctors for therapy. She found shoulders to lean on with her family and friends. She found inspiration from her athletes while self doubt crept in. She surrounded herself with believers leaving her no choice but to believe in herself.
When Heather stepped on the starting line she left all the self doubt behind her. She knew what she could do... she was patient... and she ran the race of her life!”

17 Dec 2021 | #396 - Connor Meakin: Returning From "You May Never Run Again" | 01:03:17
2014 was meant to be a banner year of running for Connor Meakin, not (maybe) his last as a runner. He enjoyed early success, winning races and feeling amazing in the process, which motivated him to want more and push even harder. Things completely derailed soon after as he got blasted with devastating prognosis for an injury that didn't initially seem too serious.
Connor had developed a serious foot injury that prompted his doctor to him that he may never run again.
For two years Connor tried everything from the conventional to the other end of the spectrum. Soon his mental and emotional health were also in need of rehabilitation.
Through it all, Connor kept pushing to find answers to get back to something he loved. In the process he not only rebuilt his body but created a new life for himself.

21 Jun 2021 | #344 - Amy Natalini: On Motivation | 00:56:30
It is an honor to have Amy Natalini back on the show! I couldn't wait to have her back on to talk about her remarkable past year. Especially her work on combat motivation and how it can relate to those in civilian life.
To quote Amy:
"Over the last eleven months, I’ve been working towards my third Masters degree, reading a book a day, writing papers for finals exams, spending hours arguing/defending/listening/learning from my classmates. And writing a thesis on motivation. Combat motivation, to be precise. My research concluded that it’s not the work done on the battlefield or in the moment that creates motivation, but the influence of training that fosters the willingness to take action. Read that again. Motivation is built and cultivated DURING TRAINING...
(t)he last 11 months of studies: 10 courses; 136 books; 8 papers; 2 projects; an 85 page thesis; a comprehensive oral exam and a partridge in a pear tree. All in the pursuit of a Master’s in Philosophy. I also certified as a USATF coach and earned a certificate in Diversity and Inclusion. I ran four full marathons, three half marathons, countless other distances, and became the Alabama 8k State Champ."
Amy ran her first marathon in 2004 in Detroit, Michigan, and has completed 54 full marathons to date. She was recently named the 2018 Air Force Athlete of the Year. After finishing the 2018 Marine Corps Marathon as the 3rd place military finisher, she was selected to represent the United States in the Marathon during the 7th World Military Games in Wuhan, China. Amy helped lead the Women’s Team to a 5th place finish. Racing pro- and Olympic athletes from over 18 nations, she finished 22nd with a Personal Record time of 2:53:53. Amy also has an overall Top-50 women's finish at the NYC Marathon.
Amy's first appearance on the Rambling Runner Podcast was in episode 138.

16 Feb 2024 | #600 - Roberta Groner: Road to Redemption | 00:51:04
At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, Roberta Groner was ready. She has just had completed the best running of her life, including a marathon PR and first American at the World Championships. Gone were the days of running conservatively while hoping for a negative split. In Atlanta Roberta planned on running at the front with her peers - the other top women in the field. Roberta was eager and anxious to shoot her shot.
Then she stepped off the course at mile 17.
It took a year and a half for Roberta to shrug off the heaviness of that day. All the expectations. All the effort. All of the sacrifices. And for what... her first DNF?
In 2022, Roberta turned it all around when she joined the Central Park Track club as an athlete and coach. From that day forward she started to recapture the spontaneous joy that can come from training, racing, and communing with running friends. Over the next two years she not only embraced the love she had for the sport, she also raced with abandon. Roberta set four American masters records (8k, 10k, 10 mile, and half-marathon) and showed herself, and everyone paying attention, that she was far from done.
Roberta arrived in Orlando for the 2024 Trials with redemption on her mind and in her heart. That drive was counterbalanced with joy, love, and a calm confidence. She left Orlando with a 24th place finish and the freedom that comes when a journey of redemption ends in success.

From professional fighter with multiple black belts to a dedicated runner, that is a transition that I could not wait to hear about. Amy Mangueira did just that and her story is fascinating. We talk about how and why she entered the fight game, comparing the training between the two sports, raising a child who is interested in the former, and all the work she’s doing to prepare for all six World Marathon Majors.

23 Jun 2023 | #546 - Christine Yu: "Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes" | 00:52:01
Over the last fifty years, women have made extraordinary advances in athletics. More women than ever are playing sports and staying active longer. Whether they’re elite athletes looking for an edge or enthusiastic amateurs, women deserve a culture of sports that helps them thrive: training programs and equipment designed to work with their bodies, as well as guidelines for nutrition and injury prevention that are based in science and tailored to their lived experience.
Yet too often the guidance women receive is based on research that fails to consider their experiences or their bodies. So much of what we take as gospel about exercise and sports science is based solely on studies of men.
The good news is, this is finally changing. Researchers are creating more inclusive studies to close the gender data gap. They’re examining the ways women can boost athletic performance, reduce injury, and stay healthy.
Sports and health journalist Christine Yu disentangles myth and gender bias from real science, making the case for new approaches that can help women athletes excel at every stage of life, from adolescence to adulthood, through pregnancy, menopause, and beyond. She explains the latest research and celebrates the researchers, athletes, and advocates pushing back against the status quo and proposing better solutions to improve the active and athletic lives of women and girls.

19 Mar 2021 | #317 - Meaghan Murray-Neuberger | 01:05:38
Have you ever had a goal that you worked for years to accomplish only to fall short by the slimmest of margins time and time again? It takes a strong person with a sense of mission to keep getting up and striving for that goal instead of giving in. That is exactly what Meaghan Murray-Neuberger did when she broke the 3:00 at the Woodlands Marathon two weeks ago. Meaghan is a three-time marathon winner with a previous marathon PR of 3:00:19. At Woodlands she ran a blistering fast 2:56:33 - 6:44 pace per mile.

Rebecca Mehra is a professional middle distance runner who recently burst into the country's consciousness. This viral tweet, detailing how she helped an elderly couple buy groceries, took the internet and traditional media by storm. Long before Rebecca was honored for her empathy she made herself known in the running community. She is third all-time in the 1500m at Stanford and finished third at the 2019 5th Avenue Mile. That performance in NYC came just months after Rebecca was electrocuted so significantly that it affected her stride for weeks. We also discuss Rebecca's love for breakfast burritos and what it's like being coached by one of her idols, and fellow Stanford alumna, Lauren Fleshman.

18 Jul 2022 | #455 - "Road to Chicago" with Tim McKone, Ep. 1 | 00:58:33
While we are in the midst of the summer months, we are also in the beginning of most fall marathon training cycles. With that in mind, we bring you a new mini-series, "Road to Chicago" with Tim McKone.
Tim is the quintessential dedicated amateur runner. He was a strong athlete in his teens, including a stint as a division three basketball player. After college Tim gained a foothold in the ultra competitive world of sports broadcasting. Over the past decade Tim spent five years as a sports anchor at NBC 10 in Providence, RI and is currently a sports anchor at 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston.
As his career started to take off his fitness and personal dedication to athletics started to slip. While Tim relishes the opportunity to pursue his dream, it's a job with unpredictable and long hours. After some fits-and-starts Tim decided to dedicate himself to being the best runner he could be in the spring of 2021. That's when he hired me as a running coach and decided to become a marathoner.
This summer Tim is committed to returning to the Chicago Marathon after a tough 2021 performance. We will follow along with his journey to the fateful day when Tim returns to the Windy City with hopes of running to the level of his fitness and talent.
You can follow Tim at https://twitter.com/Tim_McKone.
If you're looking to enhance your performance you can find a great coach at www.mckirdytrained.com. I've been a proud member of their deep and talented coaching roster for years and couldn't recommend it strong enough.

02 Mar 2020 | #218 - Amanda Brooks: Run to the Finish | 00:41:03
Amanda Brooks returns to the show to discuss her new book Run to the Finish: The Everyday Runner's Guide to Avoiding Injury, Ignoring the Clock, and Loving the Run. Amanda lays out the path to finding greater fulfillment in running for those who consider themselves "middle of the pack runners" -- they're not trying to win Boston, they just want to get strong and stay injury-free so they can continue to enjoy running.
Run to the Finish is not your typical running book. While it is filled with useful strategic training advice throughout, at its core, it is about embracing your place in the middle of the pack with humor and learning to love the run you've got without comparing yourself to other runners. Mixing practical advice like understanding the discomfort vs. pain, the mental side of running, and movements to treat the most common injuries with more playful elements such as "Favorite hilarious marathon signs" and "Weird Thoughts We all Have at the Start Line."

05 Dec 2017 | #17 Alissa Coffman: From 4:04 to 3:04 | 00:43:03
In this episode, I am joined by marathoner Alissa Coffman (www.instagram.com/alissamwc). Alissa set a 15 minute PR by running 3:04 at the California International Marathon on December 3! She accomplished this amazing feat after running the New York City Marathon five weeks earlier - setting another personal best in the process. 2017 wasn't always as kind to Alissa. After a great marathon build-up she endured a femoral stress fracture that left her hobbled for the Boston Marathon and forced her into a two month break over the summer. Listen to how she recovered from that disappointment to come back stronger than before and show the kind of toughness that all runners aspire to.

08 Nov 2017 | #13 Mike Sheehy: Grit Personified | 00:45:21
Mike Sheehy makes the extraordinary sound so simple. He has set the world record for most miles run in a week (408 miles), run 500 miles from San Diego to Phoenix, completed all six Abbott World Marathon Majors in 2017, was on pace to do the same in 2012 before the New York Marathon was cancelled to due Hurricane Sandy, survived Army Ranger School, attended West Point, and run races of all distances. But, as you'll hear in this episode, Mike considers himself an ordinary guy with the simple gift of being able to persevere through pain. I think he is far more gifted than that - but you can judge for yourself in this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast. You can follow Mike's running exploits at www.instagram.com/mikewmm.

Jereny Rivera is back and she is absolutely crushing it! Jereny was first on the show for episode 276 back in October, 2020. At that time she had just set a 5k PR of 19:07 and had dreams of going for a sub-3:00 marathon. Heady stuff for someone who five years earlier had never run before and didn't grow up with an athletic background.
Now Jereny is once again at a whole new level and she is continuing to shoot even higher. In this episode, Jereny details how and why she keep pushing herself to new levels, her paradigm-shifting training shift that have worked well for her, and all the little things that have added up to a remarkable 18 months since our last conversation.

Mind, Body, and Sole with Tommie Runz is back and we are bringing some serious takes! Both Tommie and I are known for taking strong stances when it comes to running shoes. In this episode we take it to the next level. We both came prepared with three "hills we will die on" and they are all fire takes. Later in the episode Tommie goes into Vegan Corner to talk about his favorite current dish.
About Tommie:
Tommie Runz is making big moves within the broader running community. Several years back Tommie was the picture of ill-health. He had an alcohol problem, was eating poorly, and was doing little exercise. They one-by-one he addressed all of these issues until he became the man and runner he is today - fast, fit, vegan, host of the Run Eat Sleep Show, and owner of Chip Time Running. 21 Apr 2023 | #528 - The Journey of Kenya's Legendary Running Coach Patrick Sang and the Fastest Runners on Earth | 00:49:41
Today we are fortunate to have Sarah Gearheart who has just published a truly amazing running book - We Share the Sun: The Journey of Kenya's Legendary Running Coach Patrick Sang and the Fastest Runners on Earth.
We Share the Sun takes us behind the scenes into the lives of Kenya’s fastest runners and their coach—one of the greatest and least-heralded coaches in the sport—Patrick Sang.
At a secluded training camp in Kaptagat, Kenya, a small town nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in the Great Rift Valley, three-dozen world-class runners, including Olympic champions, world record holders and the fastest marathoner of all-time, share simple dormitory-style rooms and endure grueling workouts six days a week.
These determined, devoted, and selfless runners are who they are because of a man named Patrick Sang, who is described by his athletes as a “life coach.”
In We Share the Sun, we are immersed in Sang’s remarkable story, from his college days in the US to winning an Olympic medal in the steeplechase, and his journey to become a man who redefines what coaching means.
In these pages, we explore Sang’s influence on his athletes — including his unique and longstanding relationship with marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge — as they prepared for the delayed Tokyo Olympics and other competitions. We witness the remarkable recovery of two-time New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor after a freak accident as he strove to earn his first Olympic medal. And we follow one of the world’s most dominant mid-distance runners, Faith Kipyegon, as she attempted a historic repeat title in the 1,500 meters three years after the birth of her first child.
Through Gearhart's vivid prose, we experience the richness that exists in Kenya as we come as close as we possibly can to running alongside a current and future generation of elites—and the man who molds them into champions.

While I have been chronicling my own Mastering 40 journey, I was excited to talk with Brian White who has been actively pursuing his own. Brian, who turned 40 last spring, has big goals for the marathon, 10k, and un-broken pull-ups. So far he is crushing it but don't let that fool you - he hasn't always been a runner extraordinaire. He was big into lifting for years before starting running in his late 30's. Now, Brian is on the cusp of doing amazing things and It was a pleasure to hear him talk all about it.

11 Feb 2022 | #410 - Vanessa Corcoran: "It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint: My Road to the Marathon and Ph.D." | 00:53:27
Although she spent her childhood with her nose in a book, ducking when any ball was thrown in her direction, Vanessa is now a 2-time Boston Marathon finisher, and has run over 100 road races. Currently an advising dean at Georgetown University, Vanessa earned her Ph.D. in medieval history from The Catholic University of America. Vanessa lives in Washington D.C. with her husband Patrick and their daughter, Lucy.
When she began graduate school, Vanessa did not imagine that running would help her earn a doctorate in medieval history. Yet, within a few months of lacing up her sneakers, Vanessa went from a non-runner to qualifying for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Vanessa enjoyed that running rewarded those who embraced hard work and sought to see similar results in school. But the struggles associated with a rigorous academic program caused Vanessa to wonder whether she would ever accomplish her lifelong goal of earning a Ph.D.
Her new book It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint: My Road to the Marathon and Ph.D. tells two intertwined stories of Vanessa’s rigorous intellectual and athletic journeys. Through episodes of running and researching, both the victories and setbacks, readers will discover how Vanessa found joy in the midst of a difficult quest. This relatable, inspiring, and candid memoir will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates a good comeback story or is seeking themselves to take on a seemingly insurmountable challenge.

Veronica Goebel started running in 2016 when her cousin, Aracely Richardson, convinced her to run a marathon. That's right, a conversion from non-runner to embarking on a marathon training cycle. Not only was that a big task to take on, when raceday came around she ran several weeks pregnant. By that point she had caught the running bug and it was there to stay.
Six years later, Veronica has run a handful of marathons, over a dozen half-marathons, become a member of the Houston Harriers, and cut over an hour off her marathon PR from 5:20 to the low 4:00's.
Veronica, a mother of three, also works as a real estate agent when is isn't crushing miles on her treadmill or doing long runs with the Houston Harriers. In this episode we talk about her later start as a runner, learning from her dad who is trying to break 3:00 in the marathon, how she has become an active member of the vibrant Houston running scene, and so much more.

29 Jul 2022 | #458 - Charles Moore: Chronicling 18 Marathons Over 3 Years and Running Availability/Representation | 00:51:22
In 2016, Charles Moore started a transformation that would change his life and, hopefully, the lives of many others. He was over 40 years old will little athletic training leading into his 40's. These personal revolutions were the proving grounds for what would come next: A Tracksmith fellowship to chronicle his running experience and shed light on the racial disparity in the running world.
In this episode Charles sheds light on his remarkable personal experiences with the kind of insight and joy that we can all aspire to have.

03 Oct 2022 | #477 - Tia Stone: Dedicated Amateur Turned Elite Masters Runner | 01:16:15
Tia Stone is the quintessential Rambling Runner guest. A dedicated amateur runner who has achieved truly amazing results while living a full and jam-packed life. That is why we are re-airing this episode from last year. This was one of the most popular episodes of 2021 and ideal for anyone about to run a marathon or trying to push through a challenge in their life
Tia absolutely rocked the London Marathon yesterday after doing exactly the same at the 2021 Chicago Marathon. In Chicago she finished at the 7th masters female on a day that saw many runners melt in the final miles. Not only did Tia not melt, she sped up during the final 10k!
She had this remarkable day after COVID put her low for nearly two months earlier in the year. She wasn't sure what the future held for her. It was the first spring that didn't include a marathon in over a decade. Tia rebounded slowly in the spring - then kept building little by little. Then, when autumn finally arrived she had one of the best races of her life.

19 Dec 2017 | #21 Scott Littleton: Unbreakable | 01:07:30
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,” according to Roman philosopher Seneca. If you want to know the meaning of bad luck ask Scott Littleton (www.instagram.com/chaoticscott). Scott took up running three years ago and quickly progressed to a borderline Boston Marathon qualifier, despite the fact that he made every rookie mistake in his first six months. With enviable persistence, and some high-quality coaching, he made rapid improvements. During his marathon build-up this fall, Scott PR’d at several distances and appeared to have a BQ in sight. Then it all came crashing down. Learn how Scott persevered by showing superhuman grit and determination. Many of us runners have had the rug pulled out from under us at crucial times - listen to how Scott dealt with that challenge and came out the other side better for the experience.

04 Aug 2020 | #257 - Mastering 40 Announcement | 01:31:32
Welcome to Mastering 40.
I just completed the worst athletic year of my life. One beset by injuries and a 25 lb. weight gain. Finally, I decided enough was enough.
With the help of a professional coach - James McKirdy, sports registered dietitian - Starla Garcia, and sports psychologist - Adrienne Langelier, I am determined to have the best athletic year of my life. One that will end, hopefully, with a sub-40:00 10k. This is a huge stretch goal and I am determined to get it done. Over the course of this year I will also be turning 40 years old and become a masters runner. Hence the “Mastering 40.”
I will be documenting the journey with two blog posts a week at www.mastering40.com and a podcast every three weeks. The podcasts, like this one, will include calls with the experts I will be leaning on, and learning from, throughout the process.
I hope you enjoy and learn from my year of reclaiming my fitness and pursuing an entirely new level of performance while trying to maximize my schedule as a dedicated amateur runner.

30 Apr 2021 | #329 - Stefanie Flippin, 100 Mile Road Nat’l Champ, and "Runnning Between the Lines" with Ashley Mateo | 01:17:43
Stefanie Flippin is back and, my goodness, what a return. I'll simply quote her Strava page as it says it all:
Going home with the US 100 Mile National Title! 14:35:21: 1st woman, 3rd OA, 40 minute CR, 6th fastest all-time 100 mile for an American woman and the race of a lifetime. This was an hour and twenty minute PR for me, with 20 minute 50 mile and 100k PRs along the way. The field was the deepest pro field I've ever had the honor of lining up with. I got the absolute best out of myself by putting myself in the arena and that was the goal all along. The win was icing on the cake. So grateful!! Thank you for all the cheers!! The day was truly electrifying and I had the time of my life.

Wow, things are getting real. In this episode we dive into the last three weeks which in which the workouts have been altered significantly. The mileage will stay in the 40-45 mile range for the next couple months but the workouts have were switched to longer segments and it has thrown me for a loop. In addition, day-after longer easy runs have been added to the weekend routine. In this episode, coach James McKirdy details why he made the changes and offers valuable advice about race shoes on workout days. Then I speak with Adrienne Langelier about how I can wrap my head around this shift in training that has proved difficult physically and mentally.

Our entire conversation was inspired by a post from Justin Su'a - a mental performance coach for professional athletes and an inspiring figure for athletes across the globe.

Like many of you, I had heard of Tony Post’s exploits long before I knew his name. Specifically, that he ran both the NYC and London Marathons in dress shoes (in 2:47, to boot!). In this episode we discuss what it was like to see his story chronicled in the famous book “Born to Run,” his college conversion from scholarship golfer to runner, his experience in the Boston-area during the running boom, working in the show industry at Rockport and Vibram before founding Topo Athletic, and pursuing a career in a field that you are passionate about.

03 Jun 2022 | #442 - Regina Lopez: Excelling While Following Her Curiosity | 00:48:08
Regina Lopez is a rare professional athlete. She started taking running seriously at the age of 17 - far later than almost all of her peers. After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, where she ran competitively, she qualified for and competed in the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials. After that day she spontaneously pivoted to trail running. Shortly thereafter she tried her hand at ultra running.
And she excelled at all of them. She is a Spartan Trail Champ, finished 2nd at the USATF 50k, and at the 3rd USATF 100k.
In this episode Regina talks all about the winding path her career has taken, why she has made the choices that have defined her running life, and what she is doing to maximize her ability as she embraces new challenges.

30 Jun 2023 | #548 - Coach's Corner w/ Sarah Bishop: Becoming a Better Racer | 00:46:47
It is great to get professional triathlete, OTQ marathoner, and accomplished coach Sarah Bishop back on the show for Coach's Corner.
Sarah and I talk about the importance of racing, practicing that skill set, how to approach the starting line and pacing plan with control and excitement, and an open discussion about the long layoff from races that most people have had and how it could affect them in their fall racing.
Sarah joined the McKirdy Trained staff in 2018 and has been helping runners and mothers like herself reach their running goals ever since. As a wife and mother of four young children, she understands how overwhelming life can be, and the importance of making time for yourself. Channeling this stress into daily running and training goals not only made her a better mother, wife, and coach, but also led to her to accomplishing things she never thought possible.

04 Jun 2020 | #240 - The Future of Strava and Boston Marathon Cancelled | 00:59:10
It’s with great excitement that I announce the newest podcast in the Rambling Runner Podcast Network - the Business & Sports Discourse podcast. This episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast features the first two episodes of the new show.
The new show will be hosted by me, Matt Chittim, and my good friend Jason Macaluso. This short-form podcast will provide insight into the current events, topics, and announcements that are at the intersection of business and sports. We will be publishing new episodes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Each show will about 20 minutes. Just long enough to dive into a specific topic but short enough for you to squeeze it into your daily routine.
Part I - In the inaugural episode of the Business & Sports Discourse, we discuss the recent changes at Strava. Strava is extremely familiar to almost all runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes. They have been a mainstay in the endurance community for years and are at the forefront of fitness apps and GPS tracking. While they've had a dedicated following, they have struggled with brand identity and mission over the past several years. Last week they announced a new set of premium options as well as a new pay structure. This announcement was met with plenty of reactions across the endurance landscape.
Part II - Last week the iconic Boston Marathon was officially cancelled. While not a surprise to much of the running community, it was a huge symbolic blow to many. Boston is known as one of, if the not the most, iconic races in the United States. This cancellation has an enormous effect of dedicated amateurs, charities and charity runners, elites, corporate partners, running media, and the entire running community.

16 Jul 2021 | #351 - Mastering 40 Finale | 00:27:37
It's been a long year and one that also feels like it flew by (at least from a running perspective). In the final episode of the Mastering 40 series I detail the past six weeks and the ways in which I've been able to go from almost zero running for three months to quickly building up to a 40 mile week. My first in well over a year. Then the episode shifts to talking about the future, both short term and long term. Finally, I break some news about some race plans that will include some live shows.
The genesis of this episode started on February 22 when I received a message from a listener that really struck a chord with me. She asked point blank, "(A)re you just interested in your goals or committed? It seems like the former. To an outsider following the podcasts of course." This quote put me on my heals. I returned to it nearly every day for three months but didn't reply with an answer. Until last week. I wrote her back and thanked her for her candor and insight. What else did I say? You'll have to listen to find out.
Mastering 40:
I had just completed the worst athletic year of my life. One beset by injuries and a 25 lb. weight gain. Finally, I decided enough was enough.
With the help of a professional coach - James McKirdy and sport psychologist - Adrienne Langelier, I am determined to have the best athletic year of my life. One that will end, hopefully, with a sub-40:00 10k. This is a huge stretch goal and I am determined to get it done. Over the course of this year I will also be turning 40 years old and become a masters runner. Hence the “Mastering 40.”
We will be documenting the journey with a podcast every three weeks. The podcasts, like this one, will include calls with the experts I will be leaning on, and learning from, throughout the process.
Hopefully you enjoy and learn from my year of reclaiming my fitness and pursuing an entirely new level of performance while trying to maximize my schedule as a dedicated amateur runner.

06 Aug 2018 | #86 Jean Mike Remy | 00:58:18
“When you want to make a change - just start. Don’t wait for a dedicated time to begin.”
Jean Mike Remy looks like Mr. Universe but it wasn’t always that way. In his mid-20’s he ballooned to 265 lbs and was put on medication for high blood pressure and was on the cusp of getting type two diabetes. As Remy says in the episode, “I didn’t want to be a statistic.” That is why he made a change and turned his like around. His dedication to diet, running, biking, and strength training is remarkable and the results are extraordinary.

08 Feb 2022 | #409 - Kiese Laymon: One of America's Greatest Writers | 01:08:41
Kiese Laymon, a southern writer born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, is one of the best writers in the country and someone I got to know during my time as Vassar College.
Recently there have been towns across America banning books by some of the country's greatest writers. Books by Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Kiese, and others have been removed from libraries and banned from schools. I'm re-airing this episode because his voice is powerful, inspiring, critical, authentic and vital for free-thinking people everywhere.
Kiese Laymon is the author of Heavy: An American Memoir, the novel Long Division and a collection of essays, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America. Heavy, winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal, the LA Times Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose and Audible’s Audiobook of the Year, was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the The Undefeated, New York Times, Publishers Weekly, NPR, Broadly, Library Journal , The Washington Post , Southern Living , Entertainment Weekly, San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times Critics.
Laymon is the recipient of the 2019 Austen Riggs Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media. Laymon has written essays, stories and reviews for numerous publications including Esquire, McSweeneys, New York Times, ESPN the Magazine, NPR, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, The Best American Series, Ebony, Paris Review, Guernica and more.

05 Oct 2020 | #274 - Mastering 40, Ep. 4 | 01:04:40
And here we go! My quest to break 40:00 in the 10k next summer at the age of 40 took a big step forward in recent weeks. My mileage is now approaching 30 miles a week and legit workouts have begun. The running hasn't been perfect but steps are being made. Most importantly: I'm still 100% healthy. Thank goodness. Coach James McKirdy, founder of McKirdy Trained, and I discuss all of this and talk about what the next 6-8 weeks will look like.
I also speak with Adrienne Langelier, my therapist and sport psychologist. We have our normal deep dive into my current mentality, emotions, and what is driving both. We also spend considerable time on my balancing of working with my kids as they learn from home while also trying to train and work on my business.

16 Sep 2020 | Mastering 40 Bonus Episode: September Blood Analysis and Recommendations | 00:46:08
When I first had the idea for Mastering 40 I knew that one of the major steps I would need to take was a detailed blood analysis. A mirror, scale, and workout data can provide insight but it doesn’t tell the whole story. I needed to know my exact starting point then track my biomarkers throughout the year.
I reached out to InsideTracker, the leader in this space, and they agreed to help me out. Stevie Smith MS,RDN,CSSD,CDN, a registered dietitian at InsideTracker, and ten time IRONMAN finisher, dove into my tests and provided loads of feedback.
Finding out how my body had reacted to me poor nutrition and reduced activity level put me on edge. I was worried that my health might be worse than I had imagined. Not simply for running but for life in general.
While I was in the optimized range for nearly 40 biomarkers, several tests were off the mark. Especially the cholesterol numbers.

07 Sep 2020 | #267 - Zoë Rom | 00:54:53
Zoë Rom is the writer, producer, and creater of one of the best podcasts of any genre - the DNF Podcast by Trail Runner Magazine. Not only that, she is a badass athlete who set two FKT's (fastest known time) this summer.
DNF is a show that combines the very best story telling in the running community with the production quality of a show on NPR. It focuses on the many faces of failure and how it can often be the starting point for reclamation, success, and even greatness. It has set a new standard of excellence in the running podcast genre. I am honored to talk with the brains and talent behind such a remarkable audio original - https://trailrunnermag.com/trailrunning-podcast.
As good as Zoë is on DNF, she may be even better on the trails. Her love running, hiking, and being in nature is the foundational element in her show and marvel to behold.

03 Apr 2023 | #523 - Nigel Mcgregor: The Power of Dedication | 00:48:22
Nigel Mcgregor is a testament to the power of hard work and dedication. Not merely in running, but in all areas of life.
14 years ago, Nigel ran is first marathon in 5:21 and it was a huge accomplishment. In the preceding years Nigel worked full-time driving a delivery truck while going to night-school in a full-time capacity to become an engineer. After the job and the school work Nigel would head out on his nightly run. Those runs would often end at or after midnight. This man was dedicated to his goals - no question about that.
Today, Nigel is a masters runner with marathon PR of 2:56. He has run dozens and dozens of marathons and "marathon runner" is a part of his identity he embraces and cultivates. In this episode we talk about his amazing journey and finish with a fun conversation about his beloved Boston Marathon (he's about to run his fourth!).
You can follow Nigel at www.instagram.com/nmarvelous212.

17 Jun 2022 | #446 - Mind, Body, and Sole with Tommie Runz: Most Underrated/Overrated Shoes and Metaspeed Sky+ First Look | 01:14:27
Our new monthly running shoe episodes with Tommie Runz are back and it now has a name - Mind, Body, and Sole.
In this episode we bring you two segments. In the first Tommie and I detail our two favorite underrated shoes and our most overrated shoe. Once we finish that breakdown we take a first-look at the new Asics Metaspeed Sky+. Tommie got the shoe a couple weeks ago and has taken it out for runs at several different paces. We compare it to the original Sky, the Metaspeed Edge and Edge+, and other highly productive carbon plated racers.
A truly magnificent transformation for a man who's an even better person than he is a runner.

25 Jan 2018 | #29 Tiffany James: Running for Carbs (and PR's) | 01:03:51
“When you are enthusiastic about what you do, you feel this positive energy. It’s very simple.” - Paulo Coelho
Tiffany James progressed from a 4:29 marathon in 2014 to a Boston Marathon qualifying time of 3:27 in 2017. Not bad for someone who used to skip-out on high school gym class. In this episode, Tiffany talks about her progression from occasional athlete, to runner, to running enthusiast and professional running marketer. She also details how she bounced back from barely missing her goal of qualifying for Boston, and all of the emotions wrapped up in that near miss, to set a PR in her next marathon. Finally, Tiffany, whose website is www.runningforcarbs.com, and I talk about our favorite thing - carbs! I hope you enjoy this episode and happy running!

Mind, Body, and Sole with Tommie Runz is back! Tommie is in the midst of an audacious three marathon adventure. First, Tommie wanted to get another BQ. Check! Then he wanted to run a solid effort at Chicago. Check, and then some! Tommie's fall marathon triumvirate will conclude at the New York City Marathon where he hopes to set a new PR.
In this episode, Tommie discusses the physical and mental demands of this season, how he has approached each marathon, the ways he's stayed sharp mentally after each effort, and, or course, some shoe talk.

12 Sep 2024 | #644 - Succeeding Through Short-Term Injuries with Bridget Chamberlin | 00:43:02
Often times we take deep dives into runner's recovery from traumatic injuries. Those are useful and inspiring but not always relevant to most runners. In this episode, we take a look at the physical, mental, and emotional recovery from a short-term injury setback.
Bridget Chamberlin returns to the podcast to talk about a three week injury setback that occurred with eight weeks left in her build to the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Bridget does a wonderful job detailing all of the feelings associated with her injury as well as the "all-in" method she used to bounce back and possibly return better than before.
If you want to learn more about Bridget's tremendous progression as a runner, you can listen to her feature story in episode 573. You can also follow her at www.instagram.com/bridgetchamberlinruns.

14 Jan 2019 | #132 Julie Rembold | 00:58:54
In 2018 Julie Rembold set personal bests at every distance, including a 3:01 in the marathon. Sounds like a dream, right? Not quite. A year earlier Julie, and her five young children, learned that her husband Dan had leukemia. Within days he was bed ridden for months. Thankfully, by the end of the year he was back to full strength. At that point Julie felt incredibly blessed and significantly out of shape. Then, within weeks of getting back to running she dropped an incredible 1:34 at the Dallas Half Marathon and took off from there. You can learn more about Julie at www.instagram.com/txrunningmomof5.

18 Sep 2024 | #645 - Christian Allen’s Rapid Rise to the Top of International Trail Running | 00:42:18
Christian Allen might be the most fascinating man in U.S. trail running. The two time all-American at BYU and Weber State is now a professional trail runner sponsored by Nike and Peregrune. He was able to parlay his high level college success into a trail career that is currently focused on top sub-ultra events in Europe and the U.S. He is a dynamic racer who isn't afraid to push from the front, even against some of the best runners in the world. All-in-all, he is my favorite American male trail runner to follow and it was an honor to have him on the show.
In this episode he talks about his entrance into the pro trail running, how being a man of faith and a man of action create a perfect symbiosis, and how he was able to reach the podium at some of the most legendary races in the world so early in his career.

22 Mar 2020 | #222 - Julia Kohnen - 10th at the Olympic Trials | 00:47:52
At the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, Julia Kohnen finished an outstanding race in 10th place. This is a remarkable achievement for any runner, especially an unsponsored athlete who works full-time with an additional part-time job. Julia was one of the few runners who set a PR on the challenging Atlanta course.
Julia‘s athletic journey did not begin as a runner. She was a four year Division II soccer player at the University of Southern Indiana. She was persuaded to use her fifth year of eligibility to join the cross country team. She rose from novice to runner to All-American in a matter of months. This non-traditional route to running success is as entertaining as it is interesting.
In this episode Julia details her running transition, her ability to work 60 hours and run 100 miles in a week, and her improbable rise to the top of the women's marathon ranks.
