On episode 117 of Driven to Compete Carey met with Stewart Black. Stewart drives a Chevy Sonic and that makes a lot of sense since he owns Bill Black Chevrolet & Cadillac. Founded in 1973, VARA is the largest vintage car racing member organization on the West Coast. Race fields are made up of production and sports cars through 1979, with a focus on fun and competitive, contact-free racing.

The primary objective of the sport of vintage and historic automobile racing is to promote the preservation of these cars in a racing format that emphasizes safety. VARA race fields are made up of Sports Cars, Sports Racers, Formula Cars from the post WWII period through the early 1970s, and select race car classes with a few cars from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.

Big Changes Are Coming at Auto Club Speedway

On Episode 43 of Inside ChampCar we catch take a look at this weekend's race at NOLA - "The Big Easy Enduro at NOLA"  We also catch up with ChampCar Tech Guru Ray Franck... Ray recently took off his tech hat and pulled on a helmet to get back behind the wheel of a race car too compete at Pitt Race.  He share with us what it was like to get back on the track after a long hiatus. On episode 122 of Driven to Compete Carey sat down with Velma and Raleigh Boreen and Jeff Cox. All three have been instrumental to the growth of autocross in the SCCA and continue to be driving forces for it's growth. Raleigh and Velma co-drive a Camaro and Jeff drives a GT500 Mustang. Raleigh and Velma work closely with the SCCA and for many events, they are part of the staff. Raleigh started the CAM (Classic American Muscle) class for autocross in the SCCA over 10 years ago. Velma has won the coveted Solo Cup, the highest honor for contributing to the Solo sport. Jeff is known as the hardest working man at the Solo events and he's won at least one national championship in Solo. It's a very welcoming community of people.

Episode 103 of Inside the SCCA we are joined by SCCA President & CEO Mike Cobb -- we get caught up on where the club is and where it's going after five years on the job.

On episode 43 of Inside the SCCA I chat with the club's VP of Road Racing Eric Prill about the new Green-To-Checker initiative. Many drivers have expressed concern about some of the driving in the early races of 2022 and in some cases the resulting limited green flag time during race weekends. Eric has started to collect and analyze incident data from recent Super Tour events. He's also opened up the conversation about what can be done to keep the green flag in the air. The goal is to look at what's going on -- try to learn from the data -- and listen to the ideas from drivers and race officials; to come up with some ways to minimize the time on track under full course yellow and stopped races. On this episode I asked Eric some questions sent to me from our listeners -- and some of my own as well. I think you'll find the conversation eye opening.

On episode 104 of Driven to Compete Carey met with Rob Piekarczyk. Rob is a super nice guy who also happens to drive very fast. I caught up with Rob at the June Sprints at Road America where he set the fastest lap of the weekend.
