In this episode Gary discusses why he took a week away from social media, his phone, laptop and all communication.
Gary didn’t use his phone for an entire week whilst on holiday and over that time he completely changed his relationship with his phone and work.
Gary realised social media is a complete waste of time. The time you spend on social media must be set with a clear intention such as direct response marketing, interacting with people who are interacting with your content or scheduling content.
Another thing Gary noticed was that his time on his phone was taking away from the quality of the relationships with his family. Being on your phone will make people feel they cannot talk to you because they will feel like they are bothering you.
This time away from his phone and other devices has made a lasting change in Gary’s life. When he is on holiday he will not be using his phone, and in his day to day life he will have stricter rules around his phone so that he will be more present with his family.

Who to Recruit First – Sales or Administrator?Growing a business is hard, and sometimes you do it more than once! So, if you are starting from scratch who do you employ first?Since I started my business in 2006, I've almost had to start again three or four times. I went self-employed in 2006. I started again doing life insurance, critical illness and income protection when the credit crunch hit in 2009. I started again when I bought my business partner out in 2011. I started again in 2016 when I transferred or moved back from life insurance to get back into the mortgage market. So, I've certainly had a rollercoaster starting off my business journey, but what it's enabled me to do is given me perspective on different ways to start. Because when I initially started, I started with an advisor. The last couple of times have been with an administrator, but then the beginning of this year, in 2018, I've started with three advisors and no administrator. Who do you employ first?
It all depends on where your business is at. The fundamental thing that you're going to need to assess, whether you're looking at taking on an advisor or an administrator, is what are your key values and your key strengths. What are the things that you really, really love to do on a day-to-day basis? Because that all forms as part of how you look to grow your business, because if you're not waking up every single morning with massive amounts of passion and really, really wanting to hit each day running because there are certain elements of the job that you don't enjoy doing, then you need to leverage those out. You need to delegate those to somebody else. That can often dictate the way in which you want to recruit. If you are looking to recruit, then you need to write out your process and a list of tasks you want your recruit to complete for you to free up your time to focus on the valuable tasks. The first step to levelling up yourself and your business is to get out of working 'in the business’ and work more ‘on the business’. This will give you time and the mental energy to plan out how to grow the business as well as improve yourself at the same time.
You have to focus on who you need to be and why you want to be that person. Ask yourself what is going to move you from where you are now to where you want to be? What can you do to improve your business and be consistent with it? Answering these questions is a must if you want to improve your business.
