30 Mar 2023The organizational overhaul: The right place to start, in partnership with Padilla00:25:41

No matter what kind of organization or department, you must always be evaluating your overall operation – and be prepared to transform it. On this podcast, Padilla’s Tina Charpentier offers counsel to make that daunting task seem a lot more doable.

Featuring:
Tina Charpentier, EVP, client experience, Padilla

“Don’t put structure ahead of strategy,” advises Tina Charpentier, EVP of client experience at Padilla. This is counsel she often shares when she works with entities embarking on an overhaul, many of whom immediately look to their organizational chart.

While an understandable tack, such an important (and, yes, scary) endeavor demands broader thinking. And during this conversation with PRWeek’s Gideon Fidelzeid, Charpentier tapped into her years of experience to share invaluable advice, much of which focused on how to best start such an important process.

One key starting point, she notes, is a realization that it’s almost impossible to fully evaluate your own organization, so outside counsel must be sought at the very early stages. A key provider of that counsel: your clients. “Only they can tell you what it’s really like to work with your team,” says Charpentier.

Just as important: You must be ready to hear – and act upon – the hard truths.

As the discussion continues, the importance of talent evaluation (both current and prospective) in the overhaul process takes center stage. In both cases, the often-underappreciated need to clearly define roles cannot be stressed enough, she advises.

In the podcast’s final segment, Charpentier offers some specific thoughts for agencies and in-house arms, though much of that counsel works for both. For example…..

Whatever the level of communication you imagine is necessary for an overhaul to be successful, she suggests, it needs to be even deeper than you think.

30 Nov 2023Moving at the speed of culture, a podcast presented by MSL00:29:36

Featuring:

- Shreya Mukherjee, chief strategy officer, MSL

- Ben Grinspan, VP of cultural strategy, MSL

A tendency among many brands and their comms leaders is to react to the hot trend. It’s totally understandable. However, it would be so much more powerful to use insights and strategy to be ahead of the trend.

Of course, cultural trends are fluid and move fast. It can be challenging just to keep up, let alone get ahead of them.

Fear not. During this podcast, MSL’s Shreya Mukherjee and Ben Grinspanshare their unique visions of how the right PR strategy — and, yes, “strategy” is in both of their titles, quite intentionally — can help you be effectively proactive in this regard.

To be even more specific, Mukherjee introduces the intriguing concept of being an “ambidextrous strategist.”

During the 25 minutes of this conversation, Mukherjee and Grinspan also counsel on setting up the proper teams and structure to allow for operation at the speed of culture. The roles of data, AI and DE&I figure prominently.

The two leaders conclude the podcast by focusing on some of today’s mega-trends and reasserting how the right strategy will ensure that your brand is in the best position possible.

21 Dec 2022Best Places to Work sponsored spotlight: Bacardi00:23:20

Featuring:
-Jamie Cooper, VP, global brand PR and influence, Bacardi
-Jessica Merz, VP, global corporate comms, Bacardi

Perhaps unsurprising, but still gratifying is the fact that the word “team” was used so consistently and often by both Jamie Cooper and Jessica Merz, Bacardi’s VP of global brand PR and influence and VP of global corporate comms, respectively, during this podcast.

So many of the things that stand out about Bacardi and its selection as a Best Place to Work in PR come back to that concept of teamwork.

As Merz explains to Gideon Fidelzeid, PRWeek editorial director of custom, the desire to contribute to the greater good of the team, as opposed to being a solo star, is one of the key things Bacardi looks for upon hiring anyone. And that collaborative spirit is just as evident, notes Cooper, not only among the two teams, but among Cooper and Merz themselves.

The brand got very high marks from its comms team for “recognizing employees for doing a good job.” Cooper notes how leadership really prioritizes this not only as an emotional boost to staffers, but as a key to their constant evolution as professionals.

Even with that emphasis on team, the staff also rate Bacardi strongly for its “entrepreneurial” culture. Merz is particularly pleased by this because it is indicative of the creative atmosphere she is helping to build, one in which every single employee feels as if they can contribute meaningfully.

Putting the team first, but still allowing individuals to shine. That certainly sounds like a best place to work.

29 Nov 2022PR even the Pope can appreciate: Lessons from the restaurant sector, in partnership with Coyne00:31:06

It is becoming increasingly clear to the brands in this industry – just as it has to those in many others – that comms can raise awareness and even drive bottom-line results as nothing else can. And sometimes, divine inspiration can help. Any doubts? They will be erased by this podcast.

Featuring:
-Jennifer Kamienski, EVP, Coyne PR

-Denny Marie Post, Co-President of Nextbite, Lead Director at Vital Farms and Bluestone Lane, Board Member of Travel + Leisure, Libbey Glass and P.F. Chang’s

“PR allows you to punch above your weight class as a brand,” says Nextbite’s Denny Marie-Post, who is also a former CEO of Red Robin. Its unique ability to tell an experiential story better than any other discipline is a key reason.

It also helps that comms pros in the space have proved incredibly adaptable. As Coyne’s Jennifer Kamienski explains to PRWeek’s Gideon Fidelzeid, the incredible impact the pandemic had on the sector necessitated such flexibility.

“It’s not just about the food in the restaurant space,” she asserts. “It’s about appealing to all five senses. It’s about the overall experience.” And she proudly discusses numerous examples of how PR pros in the sector have gotten creative with the reality that people are increasingly accessing restaurant food off-premises.

That creativity can also be so simple sometimes. Case in point, a 2015 Red Robin campaign on which Post and Kamienski collaborated. It involved a new fish sandwich, Lent, and an invitation hand delivered to the Vatican for Pope Francis. Check out this podcast to learn more about this inspired initiative.

26 Mar 2025The 2025 Comms Report — beyond the numbers, a podcast presented by Cision00:26:38

The eighth annual PRWeek/Cision industry report recently deployed. PRWeek's Gideon Fidelzeid speaks with Cision’s Katie Tod to dissect key data and highlight what it means for communicators’ day-to-day function.

Since 2017, industry pros have been the main source of a Cision/PRWeek annual report that captures the current state of the comms industry and function. This year’s iteration produced some noteworthy findings. Among numerous obstacles they face, communicators identified “a focus that is too reactive, as opposed to proactive” as the factor that challenges them the most. Though improvement is apparent, effective measurement of earned media’s impact (on multiple platforms) remains elusive for the majority. A healthy focus on Gen AI’s impact and an emerging voice in the never-ending search for optimal influence over consumers round out this in-depth conversation between PRWeek’s Gideon Fidelzeid and CisionOne’s VP of marketing Katie Tod, during which the numbers are converted to actionable takeaways.

30 Nov 2021Comms lessons from the ultimate crisis, a podcast sponsored by Real Chemistry00:23:34

The importance of scientific communications has never been more evident as it is now. A major reason stems from the myriad comms pitfalls that appeared during COVID-19, particularly the early days.

From real-time information challenges to opinions being misinterpreted as fact, Real Chemistry’s Jennifer Gottlieb dissects the root of the COVID-19 comms problems that kept leaders such as her so busy from the get-go.

When she confronts a particularly difficult scenario, one of the first questions she asks – Is this a crisis or a PR crisis? Knowing that answer impacts the response tremendously. This is just one of numerous bits of valuable counsel offered throughout the podcast.

Aaron Rodgers. Healthcare choices made along political leanings. The important of “insight integration.” All these topics — and more — are tackled during Gottlieb’s podcast with PRWeek managing editor Gideon Fidelzeid. We welcome you to listen in.

25 May 2023Influencer impact gets taken to the next level, a podcast presented by Omnicom PR Group00:26:42

Featuring:

-Chris Foster, CEO, Omnicom PR Group (OPRG)
-Ephraim Cohen, global lead, influencer and creator strategy, Omnicom PR Group (OPRG)

Communicators have been working with “influencers” for a long time, even before the term became common. However, so much about that relationship continually evolves. And it actually starts with how to define the word.

During this conversation with PRWeek’s Gideon Fidelzeid, OPRG’s Chris Foster and Ephraim Cohen distinguish between the dictionary definition of “influencer” and what it really means today.

From a tactical standpoint, they both clarify, it’s crucial to realize that influencers, who not that long ago waited for content, are now content creators themselves who have massive and loyal audiences of their own.

A segment of the discussion was also devoted to a topic that is always top of mind for PR pros: Measuring and proving impact in a manner that will resonate with the C-suite. Data is the star in this discussion.

As Foster notes, “Data doesn’t just answer questions. It helps you ask the right questions.” Meanwhile, Cohen underscores how data “helps you understand audiences like never before.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the counsel shared by these two industry leaders. Maximizing paid partnerships, specific counsel pertaining to overcoming C-suite uncertainty, and examples of brands and sectors who are ahead of the curve on the influencer front are all part of this can’t-miss podcast.

This podcast was inspired by a recent salon dinner, hosted by OPRG, in which some top comms leaders convened in San Francisco to discuss the innovation of influence.

27 Nov 2023What drives a healthcare champion, a podcast sponsored by Johnson & Johnson00:26:06

-Vanessa Broadhurst, EVP, global corporate affairs, Johnson & Johnson

A highly decorated executive, Johnson & Johnson’s Vanessa Broadhurst has been bestowed accolades by the likes of Savoy, blackdoctors.org, the National Association of Female Executives, who has recognized her as “Healthcare Champion of the Year,” and, of course, PRWeek, which this year is naming her to its Health Influencer 30 list.

A key reason for all these honors: Her pursuit of health equity for everyone has been powerful and consistent throughout her career. That very career has also put Broadhurst in a unique position to observe and advise on ways to ensure the goal is consistently pursued. During this podcast, she shared myriad such insights.

Though health equity has long been an issue, the recent pandemic truly shined a spotlight on how problematic it is. Few understand that as deeply as Broadhurst.

“There’s so much work to do on creating culturally competent care,” she notes. “And we need diversity in the healthcare workforce.”

While many issues in need of vast improvement remain, Broadhurst is proud to note the strides that have been made, including those facilitated by programs such as J&J’s Health for Humanity.

She is pleased to report that there is greater diversity now in clinical trials. And she even speaks about progress made in the medical illustration arena.

Broadhurst takes her role as a mentor to younger professionals very seriously, as well. She devotes time on this podcast to focusing on advice – both that she received in her early career and that she readily dispenses to the next generation.

26 Jan 2023Investing in the future of your people, a podcast presented by PAN Communications00:27:54

Featuring:
- Phil Nardone, president and CEO, PAN Communications

The pandemic changed – and, frankly, continues to change – so much in all our worlds. Among those shifts: the C-suite’s appreciation of its employees and the need to take care of them holistically. As made crystal clear by PAN Communications’ president and CEO Phil Nardone in his conversation with PRWeek’s Gideon Fidelzeid, this is one of the most crucial undertakings any comms leader can take on – both for the present and the future. The need to embrace technology is clearly nothing new to comms pros. During this podcast, Nardone shares specific thoughts on key tech investments that will help your talent thrive.

Culture is another word central to this dialogue. Everyone knows the benefits of a strong culture and the consequences of a weak one. For Nardone, it’s all about creating a “culture of innovation.” He shares what that means and how any entity can go about building it.

One of the interesting takeaways from PRWeek’s 2022 Best Places to Work program revolves around annual performance reviews. Entities that scored well overall tended to do well in this area. Those that did not score quite as well overall, lagged behind in this regard. Nardone has some very specific thoughts on this key aspect of employee development.Dedicated career coaching and a true respect for employee feedback were also highlighted during this podcast, one full of counsel and inspiration that will indeed be worth an investment of your time.

08 Dec 2022The marriage of influence and inclusivity, presented by Citizen Relations00:27:03

When it comes to influencer marketing, every brand’s goal is – or at least should be – to grow it in an authentic way and make sure it reaches everyone. This podcast is a great step in that direction as it introduces The Citizen Inclusive Influencer Index, a research study that reveals four cornerstones of creating trust-centered, authentic, inclusive influencer marketing.

Featuring:
-Shilpa Tiwari, EVP, Sustainability & Social Impact, Citizen Relations

“It’s fascinating how we don’t put more time into recognizing our demographics.” This thought overtook Shilpa Tiwari, EVP, sustainability and social impact at Citizen Relations, when she was recently searching for data about various ethnic groups in Canada, where she is based (Toronto, to be exact). Tiwari couldn’t find much – and the same issue arose when searching in the U.S.

As the U.S. (and Canada) become more and more diverse, brands have to realize that “it’s not about consumers,” she says, “but consumer segments.” And the data – or lack thereof – available is an obstacle to truly being able to influence the audiences you need to impact.

During this conversation with Gideon Fidelzeid, editorial director, custom, PRWeek, Tiwari discusses her agency’s research study. In the process, she offers notable insights on ethnic groups’ use of social channels, co-content creation, how the lack of diversity in the boardroom is directly causing a lack of diversity or understanding of diversity when it comes to influencer marketing, and more.

*At about the 13-minute mark of the podcast, Tiwari lists a few countries from which many people are coming to Canada. She says, “India, Canada and the Philippines.” The second country was meant to be China.
