01 Mar 2022Ep 92 - Getting ready to exhibit again??? Hear this first…00:09:32

Getting back to in person live events has been an interesting journey. From the 3-4 trade shows I’ve attended recently there’s been a lot of change and uncertainty. But I definitely picked up on some great tricks along this short path so far. Tune in to this podcast to hear some tips and tricks you may not expect from going back to events.


  1. Request a list before you head over. - Did you know you can request the attendee list? Especially if you are an exhibitor but you can also do it if you’re an attendee who is potentially interested in an expanded relationship down the line. If you don’t get the exact list, you can get a previous list or even take a stab at the exhibitor list that’s available online. Of course, if you are an exhibitor don’t forget to ask your Sales contact for the pre-registered media list in advance so that you can connect and share news with the media during the show.
  2. Book meetings in advance if you can. - A best practice that I always preach is to plan ahead as much as possible, however, I did notice that booths weren’t as busy as they have been in the past, so you may want to hit up booths that you REALLY want on the first day and early if you weren’t able to get that appointment.
  3. Announce news at the show. - Big fish, small fish and medium fish are all playing in a similar sized pool these days. Don’t shy away from getting media attention and making an announcement or even announcing trends relevant to the show.
  4. Go for the big meetings and connect in the App. - You’d be surprised at who is accessible when there aren't many folks around. If your show has an app, download and connect and go for those big meetings. Since less people are on-site (at least for now) you may have a better chance of getting in front of some key players. We all need to eat at some point.
  5. Take advantage of happy hours at the show for networking. - The last two tradeshows I went to were both major and both hurting for people to attend their happy hour networking events at the end of the day. Take advantage of this opportunity to turn on the charm, network and unwind all in one.
  6. Follow up ASAP. - Attention spans are short and quality connections are few and far between. If you want them to remember you follow up and/or connect as soon as possible. While it’s always ok to reconnect the week that you return to the office, I noticed that the sooner I connect with new people, the more likely I am to remember what we talked about to send a detailed follow up and the more likely they are to remember my face.

Choosing a crowdfunding platform and the differences between the two has always been a challenge for those that choose rewards-based crowdfunding, but what are the real differences between the platforms? Before you jump into crowdfunding here what you should know to select the platform is best for you, each has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s jump in.


Kickstarter

  • Recently Brandon Sanderson, fantasy book author secured more than $20.8 million from 84,600 backers in just three days.
  • Kickstarter only offers fixed funding, which means your company only receives money after the campaign is successfully funded. If you fail to reach your funding goal, all money pledged will go back to its backers.
  • Kickstarter doesn’t allow photorealistic renderings and requires that you have high quality realistic images of your campaign offering.
  • Kickstarter is focused on North America and UK.
  • Campaigns go through an approval process that will guarantee the quality of the campaign.
  • The fees for Kickstarter is a 5% fee and a 3% to 5% processing charge.


Indiegogo

  • Julie Kronstrøm Carton and Christian Adel Michael, the brother-sister team behind MATE ebike campaign, raised over $6.8 million, making it one of the most successful campaigns ever on Indiegogo.
  • Indiegogo offers a variety of funding options at different stages of development including both fixed and flexible funding.
  • Indiegogo allows tracking and additional marketing opportunities by way of affiliate marketing, referrals and more.
  • If you’re an international company, Indiegogo is the way to go.
  • You can start a campaign right away.
  • Fees are between 4% and 9%, depending on if the campaign meets or doesn’t meet its goal.

21 Apr 2022Ep 98 - How to set a PR budget and what to expect.00:11:22

This is a big question for companies when factoring in budget. Budgets for PR can vary but you typically get what you pay for. You’ll want to know a few things that you want to get out of your budget before going into the conversation of what it will cost. But today, i’ll give you some key indicators of what you’re paying for. What you’re truly paying for when you get into a PR agreement is the time and expertise. The more expertise they have, the more useful and strategic PR pro’s can be with their time.

Any solid starting budget for a quality PR program that will get you regular media attention and results will start around the $4-5K /month. If you’re working with a freelancer you may be able to get into a slightly less budget of somewhere around $3500 but going under that is going to net you less results over a longer period of time. 

Where is the time going? Most of our time is spent strategically researching and crafting story angles that we think will land. In addition, at our agency we really focus on the journey of hte audience so, what is the intention of what we want them to do and how do we want them to feel? Are we setting up building blocks for purchase decisions, are we improving reputation or are we supporting investor interest and credibility. 

A good PR pro is considering all of this when pitching, selecting media and coming up with ideas to get you in the media. Essentially, you’re paying for the best plan towards your target audience.

What you are looking for as a customer at the end of the day is results. How much is a quality article worth for you? How much traffic will it drive? If you haven’t done PR before, you may not know the answer, but remember that PR agencies typically host a ton of services outside of just media relations. Content creation, marketing strategy, social media support. So depending on what you want and how much time each of those activities take you have to be realistic about what those items are worth to you and budget that way. Some agencies may be able to start you with a project so you can see how you work together before getting locked into a longer agreement. Many of our clients do this when they want to vet us out or if they want to do seasonal projects. Now, despite the fact that there are many reasons for this, the most important element is the use of language. Why is language so important

  • Impacts your reputation, may impact your business deals, there’s a line where personal and business life blurs and we have seen that with folks like Tesla CEO, Elon Musk and Uber former CEO Travis Kalanick have had so much of a laser focus on them. The bigger the waves you want to make the more important it is to create focused messages around what you want to talk about and champion. It’s never a wrong decision to stay “no comment” when journalists or anyone takes you out of your comfort zone.

  • Prepare your messaging.
  • Be as honest as possible, Keep private things private.

Many of us already have existing content that we are working with on our websites. It may be data, white papers, blogs or case studies. The problem is that we write some content and then leave it as just that. Something that came up one day. You posted about it and then left it there. If you are strategic about your communications, creating a content amplification campaign or plan can be the best way to leverage minimal resources. If you’re starting with a white paper, listen in to learn XX ways to amplify your content: 

First of all your white paper should either address and solve a challenge that your target audience is facing or be educational.

  1. Create a long and short version of your piece
  2. Chop it up to use the one piece of content as multiple social media posts 
  3. Create multiple formats including, image, video and sound
  4. Use it as an abstract for a contributed article
  5. Pitch is as a standalone topic to the most targeted media audience
  6. Create a set of ads around the content
  7. Plan an expert  webinar
  8. Create a marketing brochure/landing page
  9. Submit a speaker proposal around the topic
  10. Post it more than once

 Hello and Welcome to the New Year and Episode 113, Best Practices for Managing Events. I'm on my way to CES as we speak and I thought this would just be a good reminder to make sure that you have things, you know, dialed up.

When you're going to a trade show. And so some things that people don't consider or think of because maybe it seems trivial or they just forget, I wanted to kind of chat about and create a little checklist for you. When you're heading off to different trade shows this year. I know January is busy for us and then it picks up again in March, and then June.  Here's my personal best practices for managing events.  I want to cover some of the basics. Listen up so you're prepared for the next event with these helpful hacks.

First of all, some basics:

  1. Always create a booth schedule, so people can take breaks, eat food, see the show 
  2. Agree on your booth/show messaging
  3. Have snacks and water at the booth
  4. Have a physical or digital schedule at the booth where you can schedule meetings
  5. Create a link for meetings later on.
  6. If you’re an exhibitor, get the media list to book meetings in advance or at least let them know if you’ll be announcing something new at the show.
  7. Have a press kit with your newest information avaialble
  8. Leverage the power of QR Codes
  9. Ditch the swag and go for valuable content
  10. Make everything digital
  11. Always have a video, but get rid of sound and go for subtitles
  12. Follow up as soon as possible

By the time DVD Your Memories was acquired in 2012, the multimillion-dollar company had twenty-seven full-time employees with four offices in two different states.

Having begun his entrepreneurial path with no formal business education, Chuck received his MBA from UC Davis with a focus on entrepreneurship in 2016, the same year he won first place in the prestigious Big Bang! Business Competition.

Chuck, along with his business competition partner, founded the Electric Scooter Guide in 2019, which became the world’s leading resource for the personal electric scooter market within a year. While Chuck successfully exited the Electric Scooter Guide in 2022, he continues to be recognized on the street as an influencer due to the hundreds of YouTube videos and live shows he and the Electric Scooter Guide team created.

Chuck currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and young son. He currently teaches go-to-market strategy for UC Berkeley Extension and consults for small- to mid-sized companies. When not teaching or consulting, you can find him at the local parks playing with his son or running a pickleball ball club.

Today, I'm going to cover a Hot List where we're talking about all the consumer tech reporters - at least the top 10.  CES 2024 is coming up in January, and I know everyone's getting ready for the event in Las Vegas. CES is the largest consumer technology expo every year.

Today, we will have a quick chat about the consumer tech Hot List and who's on it, and which outlets are really the ones that are driving the most traffic and doing the most dynamic things in consumer technology.

Some tips to remember:

  • Always do your background research on each reporter to identify timeliness and relevance.
  • Read the reporter’s previous articles.
  • Check for article collaborators who may also be good contacts for your story.
  • If you’re searching for contacts, check the masthead of the media outlet which is usually on the “About us” or “Contact us” page. You may also find it in the media kit.
