The Art of Naming Your Podcast: Strategies, Guidelines, and Pitfalls to Avoid

Have you ever found yourself ready to launch your podcast but stuck on what to name it? Well, you're not alone in this dilemma. Naming your podcast can be a challenging task, but it's also a crucial one. Your podcast’s name is the first thing potential listeners see, and it can make or break their decision to give your show a listen. In this post, we're going to take a deep dive into the art of podcast naming.

The Importance of a Good Podcast Name

First off, let's establish why it's so important to choose the right name for your podcast. A well-chosen name is not just easy to remember, but it's also engaging and gives potential listeners a glimpse into what your podcast is all about.

Moreover, a well-thought-out name can leverage organic SEO, making your podcast easier to discover.

The Dos and Don'ts of Podcast Naming

Firstly, your podcast's name should be easy to read and understand. Imagine having a name that's so complex, it's impossible to pronounce- or worse, impossible for YOU to pronounce! Obviously, you wouldn't want that. Secondly, it's best to keep the name short. Short names are easier to remember and don't run the risk of being cut off on podcast platforms.

Your podcast name should also be obvious. It should give potential listeners an idea of what your podcast is about. This way, they can make quick and accurate decisions about whether your show aligns with their interests.

On the other hand, there are also things to avoid when naming your podcast. You should avoid being too vague in your podcast name. If you're unsure about your podcast's niche, it may be beneficial to do some brainstorming with your ideal listeners / community before finalizing your name.

Another pitfall to avoid is using your name for your podcast. Using your name might not provide any clarity about the show's content unless you're already a well-known figure. Moreover, it's crucial to avoid copyright issues by not choosing a name that's already been used by another podcast.

17 May 2023S1 18. The Replay Advantage: Why Not Using Podcast Replays Is Costing You00:21:16

Are you struggling with podcast burnout or feeling overwhelmed by the content creation process?

Say goodbye to burnout and hello to a more sustainable podcasting approach, as I’m debunking misconceptions and reveal how to strategically use podcast replays for maximum impact in your business and online presence. Listen to discover its benefits, including increased listener engagement and boosted sales, for podcasters experiencing cycles of feast and famine, life instability, or simply over committing.

In this episode, I’ll be sharing tips on selecting and repurposing podcast replays, ensuring they stay relevant and engaging for all your listeners. Find out when to use podcast replays and the importance of the content's shelf life and context.

I truly believe that this episode will revolutionize your podcast content strategy!

Using Podcast Replays Strategically

Podcast replays are: reruns of old episodes that can be used as full episodes, or spliced into specific sections for use in new episodes, or a combination of "best of" episodes. They can be a great way to refresh information for your listeners and reach occasional listeners who may have missed the original episode. However, podcast replays should not be overused or relied upon as a crutch for content creation.

Ana Xavier

To effectively use podcast replays, consider the following dos and don'ts:

DO:

  • Give replays breathing room from the original episode (at least 3-6 months).
  • Check if your guest is still in business and if the content aligns with your current strategy.
  • Use replays for episodes that didn't perform well initially for external reasons, giving them a chance to perform better.
  • Look at your content calendar and consider using replays around relevant dates or events.

DON'T:

  • Use replays as part of a strategy for a podcast that needs to be listened to in order.
  • Ignore the shelf life of the content, such as using holiday-themed episodes in the wrong season.
  • Reuse content that is visually or audibly poor in quality, or that lacks quality on the content itself.
  • Rely on replays too frequently, as it may appear lazy and deter listeners.

Maximizing Impact with Podcast Replays

When used strategically, podcast replays can help maximize your content's impact and increase listener engagement. By selecting and repurposing replays wisely, you can ensure they stay relevant and engaging for your audience.

Takeaways from this episode:

To maximize the impact of your podcast replays, consider the following:

  • Record an intro to provide context for the replay and explain why it is being reused.
  • Use replays to support your overall content strategy and align them with your podcast's mission.
  • Be mindful of the balance between creating new content and using replays, ensuring you do not over-rely on them.

Embracing podcast replays as part of your content strategy can help you overcome burnout and maintain a sustainable podcasting approach. By using replays strategically and thoughtfully, you can boost listener engagement and drive sales while providing valuable, relevant content to your audience.

Episode 4:

21 Feb 2024S1 58. Episode Case Studies That Convert: 3 Key Elements for Customer Conversion Success00:23:46

As a podcaster, you may have been struggling to convert your podcast listeners into buying customers. You're not alone. Many podcast hosts find it challenging to make sales because they are hesitant to mention their products and services on their show. But there's a missing piece from your podcast content strategy that can significantly impact your conversion rate - case studies.

The Power of Case Studies

HubSpot revealed that 54 percent of all podcast listeners are more likely to buy from a brand that they have heard on a podcast. This statistic alone should make you consider leveraging case studies to promote your products and services on your show. Furthermore, research from SEMrush shows that case studies are one of the top-performing content types in the critical stages of the buyer journey - consideration and conversion.

Why Are Case Studies Important

When it comes to making buying decisions, customers rely heavily on reviews, customer testimonials, success stories, and case studies. These provide a tangible understanding of what it would look like to work with you. If you have a high-ticket item or a product that may seem risky to your listeners, case studies can alleviate their concerns and help them navigate the decision-making process.

15 Nov 2023S1 45. 3 Episode scripting techniques that lead to fewer mistakes, better inflection, and more confidence00:19:42

Are you tired of feeling nervous or unsure while recording your podcast? Are you often worried about tripping over your words or sounding too monotone and low energy? If so, you're not alone. These are common concerns for many podcasters. Fortunately, this episode’s covers the practical art of podcast scripting in a way you may not have heard talked about before.

Using smart scripting to avoid podcast anxiety

Podcast scripting not only ensures that you are well-prepared for your recording sessions but also helps you sound natural, maintain a connection with your listeners, and avoid sounding overly rehearsed. This technique can also help you tackle common fears such as anxiety and impostor syndrome, allowing you to express your authentic voice.

In the first chapter of the podcast episode, I’m sharing how to script your podcast in a way that allows you to structure information effectively, read your script in a conversational tone, and maintain a connection with your listeners isn’t that hard.

In the second chapter, I’ll dive deeper into the art of podcast scripting to explore the techniques for creating a script that will make you sound more confident during your podcast sessions.

At the end of the day, being approachable and genuine helps you connect with your audience - especially if you don’t have to work out how to add complex words or thoughts into the script! An overly scripted delivery can sound robotic and unengaging. Whether you're a small business owner or an impact-driven professional, applying these techniques can transform your podcasting style, boost your confidence, and genuinely engage your audience.

16 Aug 2023S1 31. Why obsessing over creating a unique, perfect podcast is limiting your growth: Summer Spark Series00:11:58

It’s episode 3 of the Summer Spark Series and we're diving deep into a topic that's probably been on your mind: the quest for a uniquely perfect podcast / episodes. Now, don't get me wrong—striving for uniqueness is essential, but here's the catch: obsessing over it can actually hinder your podcast's growth.

You could be missing out on clients because you’re missing the ‘basic’ ideas

Are you guilty of overcomplicating your ideas, making each episode more complex than it needs to be? Well, that can lead to inconsistent content releases or leave you feeling exhausted every time you work on a new episode. But fear not, we'll find a way to simplify things and keep your creative juices flowing!

Have you ever missed out on fantastic ideas just because you thought they weren't "creative enough" for your show? Sometimes, the basics are precisely what your community needs from you. We'll explore how to strike a balance between innovation and providing valuable content.

And let's talk about the fear of treading on familiar ground. Obsessing over never discussing what other podcasts talk about can be crippling. While it's great to explore unique blue ocean ideas, it's essential to find your authentic voice without getting lost in comparison. I'll show you how in the episode.

When analysis paralysis becomes a good friend

Feeling stuck in analysis paralysis because you're aiming for a "next-level" podcast without a minimum viable podcast product (remember episode 24)? It's time to address that. We'll look into streamlining your processes and taking practical steps towards your podcast's successful launch.

But fear not! We've got solutions for you. First, recognize that the impostor syndrome might be at play here. Your personality and unique perspective already set you apart. Trust in your ability to create something special with all the skills that you already possess! Next, we'll dive into your processes and identify where you might be consistently stuck. By focusing on specific pain points, we can conquer those challenges together.

05 Apr 2023S1 12. Is video podcasting for you? 15 key considerations before you decide00:24:32

Is video podcasting in your future?

Do you want to understand what video podcasting is all about?

After working in video podcasting, livestreaming, radio, and audio-only podcasts for the past 10+ years, I can break down the decision to 15 key considerations before you decide.

As a podcaster, I know that starting a podcast can be a daunting task, especially when deciding between an audio or video format. In this episode, I share the benefits and drawbacks of video podcasting and how it can impact your podcast's discoverability and engagement.

One of the main challenges of video podcasting is the bigger budget required for equipment and production. Unlike audio podcasts, video podcasts require setting up a camera, lights, positioning your table or screen, microphones, and invest in editing software, and potentially having to put on makeup, do your hair, and wear different clothes.

Additionally, editing, exporting, and uploading to platforms take longer than audio podcasts. However, if you're just starting out, audio is easier to learn and to master, and you can make yourself sound good with minimal work.

Video podcasting requires a different skill set in both body language, which can be a great challenge for hosts who are not naturally gifted speakers on camera. But, it can also be a great opportunity to learn a new skill and improve your hosting abilities if you’re up for a new challenge!

One of the main benefits of video podcasting is its impact on your content’s discoverability. Google ranks pages with multimedia content higher on search results, and YouTube audiences are pre-disposed to consuming content from unknown creators, making it easier to grow your audience.

If you and your listeners are visually driven, it's easier to show than to explain, and video podcasts can help you get more subscribers faster, though it doesn't necessarily mean they're super engaged.

YouTube and YouTube Podcasts have excellent analytics that compensate for the lack of clarity on podcast hosting platforms. From understating where exactly listeners stop listening on, to being able to see exactly where they found your video - it’s great to make informed decisions!

If you can’t find time to create a transcript, consider YouTube’s closed captions! Video also helps people who aren't native speakers understand better through captions and by reading your lips.

Topics covered on this episode:

  • Video Podcasting
  • Benefits of using YouTube for your podcast
  • Pros and Cons of video podcasts
  • Audio vs Video podcast - which one is best for you?

29 Mar 2023S1 11. “I hate writing, I rather talk it”: how a podcast can birth a #1 Bestseller Book on Amazon, with Nic Redman00:33:39

Writing a book sounds like a daunting, scary, and overwhelming experience, but what if I told you that your podcast already provides a in-depth insight into what that book could be?

Award-winning author, podcaster, and vocal coach Nic Redman joins us again to talk about the process of putting together her #1 Bestseller book ‘On The Mic’. At the time of the recording of our conversation, we had NO idea the book would top charts all around the world, and in MULTIPLE categories, so that makes this interview a LOT more interesting!

If you missed part 1 of this interview, please go ahead and check it now, as Nic shares incredible insights into her life as a coach, how she found her voice, and some incredible and powerful takeaways of working in the podcast and audio industry.

Now, into what you can here for. Nic and I discuss:

  • Why your podcast is the digital version of the classic expression ‘Try before you buy’
  • How to decide which publishing option is best for you
  • The ‘real life’ fears that come with releasing a book (even if you’re an award-winning podcaster like Nic!)
  • How to overcome the idea of peer judgement
  • Why you should never use the term ‘wee book’
  • How to find out what your listeners and clients want from you.

Also, here are some clever highlights that Nic shared in the interview, that will help you in your own process:

  • Create an FAQ section in your book, a troubleshooting section of some sorts, so that you can guide and empower the listener to find the answers to the questions they have!
  • Unless you just started in your industry, you already know what your listeners want from you, so trust your gut when it’s time to craft episodes and chapters for the book.
  • People will ALWAYS pay for a bespoke approach - coaching, or whatever it is - and the podcast is a great way to showcase if you’re the right person to work with them.
  • Your clients won’t care about the type of stamp that’s included in your book - they care about the content, so don’t obsess over the fact that you don’t have a big publishing house’s seal of approval.
  • Going for a big publishing company can limit your freedom, rights of usage, podcast rights, and future monetization opportunities, so it’s KEY that you set your future yourself for success.

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Podcasting your way to a book can feel like you’re cheating, or that you aren’t a ‘real writer’, but in the end, it’s all about finding a process that works for you.
  • As in any collaborative process, you may have to fight to keep your voice in your book, but at the end of the day, remember that you have the final say - it’s your book after all!
  • Don’t fear technology - embrace it! Without the technology we have today, you wouldn’t be able to have a podcast, or to be able to self-publish a book!
  • If you’re trying to start a book (or a podcast, for that matter!) just start. Don’t set a specific goal if it overwhelms you - just sit down and get cracking every day!

The Voice Coach Podcast:

01 Mar 2023S1 7. The quickest way to determine if a podcast idea works for you00:09:52

Have you ever wondered how do people come up with podcast episode ideas in one sitting?

Maybe you are trying to launch a podcast, or maybe you're trying to decide what's your next season about, and you're feeling really overwhelmed with all the possibilities.

If you replied 'I am!' to any of the 3 options above, his episode is specifically for you!

Now, fair warning, this one doesn't include anything deeply strategic (yet) like endlessly Googling podcast topics, researching your competitors and peers, or doing keyword analysis.

What is 'brain dumping'?

'Brain dumping' is a strategy that I've used for years with podcasters to help them determine what's their level of expertise, comfort, interest and knowledge of that one podcast idea they initially had.

I love this strategy because it's all about tapping into yourself, and it feels like a game that you can play for 30 minutes, in one sitting, or break it down in multiple parts throughout the week.

Topics covered in this episode:

  • Podcast topic ideas
  • How to determine good podcast ideas
  • Podcast strategy
  • Starting your podcast
  • Pitfalls of podcast beginners

Takeaways from this episode:

  • If you don't have a clear understanding of how long an episode idea can be used for, you may find yourself out of episodes in less than 3 months.
  • 'Brain dumping' is highly effective to determine if a podcast idea should be placed as ongoing episodic content, or serialized content.
  • If you're just replicating a podcast idea that your competitor was able to successfully grow, but you're not truly excited by the concept, you may end up frustrated and disappointed.
  • Aligning your podcast idea with what you do as a business, is crucial, if you're looking to get results from it.
  • If you're looking for help to determine what is a good podcast idea, you can book a podcast power hour, or a strategy session with me.

07 Feb 2024S1 56. 10 Reasons Why Most Podcasters Fail- and How You Can Avoid Being One Of Them00:26:00

How to avoid failing as a Podcaster

Podcasting has become a popular medium for sharing knowledge, stories, and ideas. However, it's no secret that many podcasts fail to gain traction and eventually fade away. In this episode, we will explore the 10 most common reasons why podcasts fail and provide valuable insights on how to avoid these pitfalls. Whether you're a seasoned podcaster or just starting, understanding these reasons can help you create a successful podcast that stands out from the 90% of podcasters who fail.

Giving Your Podcast Enough Time to Generate Momentum

The first reason why many podcasts fail is that the host didn't give them enough time to generate momentum and become a regular part of their audience's day-to-day. Starting a podcast is not a guarantee of instant success. Like any endeavor, it takes time and consistency to build an audience. Understanding this and having patience can help you stick with podcasting even during the early stages.

In data collected by The Actively Established Podcast Report: Rephonic and Podmatch, only 10% of podcasters who launch a show make it to 50 episodes = one full year of weekly episodes.

Social media is one of the top three priorities every podcaster should focus on first to grow their podcast. It can be a major pain point for many podcasters, but it is crucial for effectively engaging with your audience and receiving valuable feedback. To save time and energy, consider delegating social media tasks to someone else, such as content creation and scheduling.

Ask yourself: am I just posting and ghosting?

Social media is the connector piece of your podcast - you’re already doing uni-directional communication through your show, so it’s important to use your presence on social channels to connect on an immediate level with your audience.

Additionally, you can make smaller investments in software licenses or on short courses that teaches you how to create content that truly resonates with your listeners. This will help you develop an engaging social media presence that not only attracts new listeners, but also encourages existing ones to continue tuning in. We actually have created a quick 1-hour training that you can enroll here.

2. Editing:

Editing is another crucial element of podcasting that can make a massive difference in your podcast's overall quality.

A well-edited podcast sounds professional and appealing to your audience, which is essential for retaining listeners and attracting new ones.

If editing is not your strong suit or if you find it time-consuming, consider outsourcing this task to a professional editor or using editing software. This will not only save you valuable time, but also ensure that your podcast sounds polished and professional.

And if you’re fearing that no-one will be able to capture your ‘style’, guess again! There are fantastic professionals out there, ready to pick up your style, just trust that you’ll be able to work with them to get to a final result that you’re proud of!

1. Content Strategy:

Finally, having a solid content strategy in place is vital for maximizing your podcast's potential and ensuring that your content aligns with your goals. Without a clear strategy, you may be wasting time, energy, and money on content that does not serve your podcast's purpose or help you achieve your desired results.

To develop a content strategy that works for you, consider working with a podcast strategist who can help you identify your goals, create a plan to achieve them, and make better decisions for your podcast's growth. This will help you create content that speaks to your target audience and keeps them engaged, ultimately leading to a more successful podcast, and business.

You don’t need to wait for the ‘right’ time to invest in content strategy, and it’s not reserved for only you’re big enough! There are strategists for all budgets.

07 Jun 2023S1 21. How to create a content strategy that anticipates your podcast listeners' thoughts00:27:28

Have you ever listened to a podcast and thought to yourself:

  1. How is the host inside my head?
  2. How can they read my mind - I was just thinking that?
  3. How did they KNOW I really needed this episode?

The truth is that those hosts didn't discover telepathic capabilities like Professor Xavier from X-Men, they used a strategy!

The 5 habits that improve your ability to ‘read’ listeners’ minds

In this episode, I'll share the secrets behind creating engaging listeners and influencing them to take action through 'mind-reading' techniques tailored to content creation. We'll be on a journey to understand your audience, step outside our industry 'bubbles', and discover the power of actively engaging in meaningful conversations with our listeners.

By paying close attention to the needs and preferences of our audience and creating content specifically designed for them, we can turn passive listeners into dedicated fans.

To achieve this, it's essential to maximize the value of client calls, engage your audience through one-on-ones, social media interactions, and replying to DMs. We also discuss the need to find the right balance when creating content, overcome the fear of judgment from peers, and the importance of setting a goal for your show.

Reflecting on our podcast journey and making meaningful changes is key to ensuring our content serves our audience in the best possible way. We must explore various methods to determine what our audience wants to hear and how to guarantee our content connects with them on a deeper level.

5 habits to change:

  1. Assuming you already know everything about your audience
  2. Never engaging in conversation
  3. Being inconsistent, and creating content ‘on the fly’
  4. Assuming ‘basic’ is bad
  5. Creating content without a goal

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Understand your audience: Engage with your audience on a deeper level to ensure that your content resonates with them. Step away from your industry 'bubbles' and actively listen for specific words and phrases that they use to describe the problems they are facing.
  • Create tailored content: By understanding your audience's needs and preferences, you can create content specifically designed for them. This will help turn passive listeners into dedicated fans.
  • Balance your content: Find the middle ground when creating content, and do not be afraid of judgment from peers. It's important to create content that caters to your audience's needs and preferences, rather than just focusing on what you think they want to hear.
  • Set a goal for your show: Having a clear goal for your podcast will help guide your content creation and ensure that you are serving your audience in the best possible way.
  • Reflect on your podcast journey: Take the time to reflect on your podcast journey and make meaningful changes to ensure your content serves your audience. Explore ways to discover what your audience wants to hear and how to ensure your content is connecting with them.

12 Apr 2023S1 13. Content Pillars: The Building Blocks of Consistent Content00:22:43

Do you often worry that you'll run out of things to say on your podcast?

Or do you feel like you don't have structure to your show, and end up talking about everything and anything?

Or did you start the show and now want your ideal listener to turn into a paying customer, or a raving fan?

If you said yes to one or all statements above, this is the episode for you because I'm covering the solution for them all: content pillars.

In this episode, I’ll break down exactly:

  1. What content pillars are
  2. Why you need them
  3. Misconceptions about content pillars
  4. Examples of how I use them in this podcast, and how clients that I've worked with used them to grow their business and influence.

What are Podcast Content Pillars

Content pillars are the main themes or topics that a podcast is built around. They serve as the foundation of your podcast and provide a clear direction for you and audience. Content pillars are typically broad enough to cover a range of subtopics, but specific enough to create a cohesive and consistent show in the long-term.

By establishing clear content pillars, podcast hosts can ensure that their show stays on track and provides value to their listeners. This also helps with audience growth, as listeners know what to expect from the show and can easily share it with others who are interested in the same topics.

Additionally, having well-defined content pillars can make it easier for you to come up with episode ideas and plan out your content as your show marks 50, 100, 200 episodes. You can also use content pillars to guide your marketing campaigns, social media content, and targeting potential audiences who are interested in those specific topics.

Extra TIP: Did you know that your content pillars will change accordingly to your podcast goal? In case you haven’t, go ahead and check Episode 4 which covers the 7 goals you can set for your podcast.

Topics covered on this episode:

  • Content Pillars (or Content Buckets)
  • Benefits of using Content Pillars on podcasts
  • Misconceptions about Content Pillars
  • Examples of Content Pillars

Takeaways from the episode:

  • Content pillars aren’t always a must on the show: if you have a limited series, or are trying to use your podcast just as an FAQ for your listeners or current clients, you don’t need to set them up.
  • I’ve added 8 content pillars on my show, but most podcasters only use about 3-4, and eventually add on to that as needed.
  • Content pillars are only one part of a successful podcast strategy. You can’t create long-term impact without a clear path for your content.
  • If your podcast goal changes, then so should your pillars: their whole purpose is to support the goal of the goal and help you stay on track!
  • I share my 8 episodes and explain how they align with the goals that I’ve set for my podcast - let me know if you resonated with one or more!

23 Aug 2023S1 32. 5 practical strategies to increase download numbers: Summer Spark Series00:13:13

If you're looking to grow your podcast's impact, increase the number of people listening to the show, or just doubling the amount of plays per listener, these 5 practical strategies to increase podcast download numbers are just what you need to grow your show.

This episode is part of our 5-part Summer Spark Series where we’re diving into practical ways to grow your podcast, and expand on how to create a successful podcast.

Increase your podcast download numbers strategically

  1. Organize Your Episodes: Staying organized is key to running a successful podcast. Create a running list of all your podcast episodes in one easily accessible location. Stick to one platform for hosting and distribution, and devise a strategy that aligns with your habits, ensuring links are readily available on multiple devices. This organization will save you precious time and make it easier for your audience to find and engage with your content.
  2. Promote Previous Episodes frequently: Craft an engaging experience that guides your listeners through your content. Promote previous episodes whenever possible, and consider creating themed episode playlists or quizzes tailored to your audience's needs. This approach not only increases downloads but also enhances your audience's overall podcast experience.
  3. Replays Matter: Don't underestimate the power of replays! Continuously promote your episodes to new audiences, as the listeners you have today may not be the same ones you'll have three months from now.
  4. FAQs episodes are a business hack: Utilize your episodes as responses to frequently asked questions, saving you time and providing better ways to interact with your audience.
  5. Just increase the release frequency: In the world of podcasting, more episodes mean more downloads. By consistently releasing new content, you not only give your audience more to listen to but also increase the opportunities for them to binge through your episodes.
  6. Remember, don't gatekeep your content—offer valuable insights freely to attract and retain listeners.

If you're eager to create binge-worthy content and learn even more strategies to elevate your podcast, sign up for my newsletter. You'll receive twice-weekly content designed to help you take your podcast to the next level.

24 Jan 2024S1 54. Beginner vs Expert: Which hosting style is best for you? Podcast Basics00:15:52

One of the main qualities of podcasting is that you can experiment with your hosting style and match that to your personality. However, many podcasters feel pressured to be like journalists or radio broadcasters, which can limit the character and authenticity of their podcast. In this episode, we will explore different hosting styles that you can use on your podcast to find your groove and create a product that resonates with both you and your listeners.

Experimenting with Podcast Hosting Styles

When starting or launching a podcast, there are several skills you need to learn, and master one of them being speaking. Speaking to a microphone without a camera is quite different from speaking directly to a camera - it involves a complex type of focus. As a former journalist and radio host, I’ll be sharing her personal experience of launching my own podcast and feeling uncertain about the type of host I wanted to be. The beauty of podcasting is that there are endless niches, and you have the freedom to choose your approach as a professional or an authentic communicator.

Two Types of Hosting Styles

When starting a podcast, there are two main hosting styles to consider: the lens of the expert and the perspective of the learner. If you're using podcasting as a business tool, you will likely adopt the lens of the expert. Within this style, you can choose to strictly share your expertise or invite other experts to have conversational episodes that both educate and solidify your knowledge.

On the other hand, the learner's perspective is a great opportunity for those transitioning into a new industry or pursuing a passion project- in fact many of my clients experience this situation and come to me for advice on how to best show up online without feeling ‘like a fraud’. This approach removes the pressure of being the host who knows it all and invites your audience to join you on your learning journey. By approaching topics with a beginner's mind, you create a space that encourages curiosity and growth for both you and your listeners.

Editing vs. Relaxed Style

Many podcasters believe they must always be serious and error-free, especially when discussing serious topics. However, podcasting allows for a range of hosting styles, including more off-the-cuff and relaxed approaches. It's essential to align your hosting style with the type of show you want to create. If you prefer a structured and heavily edited podcast, that's perfectly fine. But if you want a more casual and conversational vibe, embrace your natural self and be transparent with your audience about any changes to your editing style.

Embracing Vulnerability and Authenticity

The pressure to know everything as an expert can be overwhelming. I encourage you to embrace vulnerability and acknowledge when you don't have all the answers. Authenticity is a valuable trait, and listeners appreciate hosts who are honest about their limitations. Real-time moments of learning and researching on-air can be engaging and relatable for both the host and the audience.

13 Dec 2023S1 49. Best practices for Podcast Cover Art: strategies for professional branding, and evergreen advice for photoshoots, Yesenia Bocanegra00:43:04

Your podcast's cover art is the first visual cue potential listeners encounter. It has the power to attract attention, stir curiosity, and convince people to click "play". Hence, having compelling podcast cover art is vital to your podcast's success. In an enlightening episode with our former guest Yesenia Bocanegra, a seasoned video podcast coach and former photographer, we unlocked the secrets of creating irresistible podcast cover art.

Unmasking misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about creating podcast cover art. Yesenia debunks some of the common ones. Contrary to popular belief, your face does not have to be on the cover. Additionally, using all your brand colors isn't a necessity. It's about finding the right image, striking a balance with the color palette, and choosing the perfect outfit to capture the essence of your podcast.

Planning a photoshoot for your podcast

A brand photoshoot is a crucial component of crafting effective cover art. Yesenia shared insightful tips on planning a successful shoot. It's not just about taking photos but considering the meaning of the location, props, and even the outfit that aligns with your brand's image. Preparation and proactive communication with your photographer are key. It's essential to have a variety of photos for different purposes.

Designing Podcast Graphics

The podcast delves into the art of designing cover graphics. Yesenia discussed the power of balance, negative space, and contrast in creating visually appealing designs. It's also crucial to consider the size and readability of the graphics, especially on mobile devices. Moreover, using relevant elements that reflect the podcast's content, rather than random elements, can create an intriguing design.

Determining the right pose for your podcast cover

Your pose on the cover art matters! Yesenia emphasized choosing a pose that exudes confidence, connects with the audience, and feels comfortable. Small movements and avoiding certain poses, such as leaning too much or sitting incorrectly, can make a significant difference. Finding a pose that represents the individual and their podcast in a positive and engaging way is key.

Connecting poses with Content Pillars

Visual branding for podcasters is vital. The way you present yourself in photos can convey a message to your audience. 24 May 2023S1 19. Podcast episode titles that boost your downloads and mistakes to avoid00:20:46

As a podcaster, it's essential to create compelling and informative titles for your episodes, as they play a vital role in attracting and engaging listeners. In this week’s episode, I'll discuss the importance of crafting irresistible podcast titles and some best practices to ensure your content stands out from the crowd.

Understanding Listener Decision-Making

When optimizing your podcast episode titles, it's important to consider the different types of listeners and how they make decisions to listen to your content. There are superfans who will listen to every episode you release, and then there are occasional listeners who will choose episodes based on their interests and available time. By being mindful of these different listener types, you can craft titles that cater to their needs and ultimately encourage them to hit play.

Assessing Title Display Across Podcast Apps

As a podcaster, it's essential to understand how your titles display on various podcast apps such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Each app has different character limits and layouts, which can affect the visibility and readability of your titles. A best practice is to keep your titles under 100 characters and ensure the most critical information appears within the first 30 characters. This will make it easier for listeners to skim through titles and make informed decisions about which episodes to play.

Optimizing Your Podcast Episode Titles

To create effective podcast titles that maximize visibility and performance, follow these best practices:

1. Be clear about the episode's content: Make sure your title provides enough information for the listener to make an informed decision about the episode. Avoid vague or clickbait titles that may mislead or disappoint your audience.

2. Use relevant keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords related to the episode's topic in your title, as this will help your content appear in search results and attract listeners interested in that subject.

3. Include guest names when applicable: If your episode features a guest, include their name in the title. This can help attract listeners interested in hearing from that specific guest or those who follow their work.

4. Write for humans, not robots: Avoid stuffing your titles with too many keywords, as this can make it difficult for listeners to understand the content and may even lead to your podcast being penalized by platforms like Apple Podcasts. Instead, focus on creating titles that are easy to read and understand.

5. Be consistent: Maintain a consistent format for your episode titles, ensuring they are easy to read and follow a similar structure throughout your podcast.

6. Avoid using symbols or emojis: Symbols and emojis can cause issues for smart speakers and certain podcast apps, making it difficult for listeners to find your episodes. Stick to using plain text in your titles for the best results.

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Crafting compelling podcast episode titles is an essential aspect of ensuring your content stands out and attracts engaged listeners.
  • By understanding listener decision-making, assessing title display across various podcast apps, and following best practices for optimizing your titles, you can create irresistible titles that empower your audience to make informed decisions about your episodes.
  • Don't miss out on these valuable insights for elevating your podcast game and making sure your content stands out from the crowd.

30 Sep 2024S2 78. Marketing, Metrics, and Mindset: A Season 2 Preview And 3 Big News You Can't Miss00:11:44

Can You Get Podcast Downloads Without Actively Marketing It?

I often get asked, "What would happen if I didn't promote my podcast at all?" In this episode, I'll share what I found when I tested this out on my podcast between Seasons 1 and 2 of the show.

I'll discuss the impact on my downloads, traffic, retention, brand, and social media.

I wanted to create a season preview about what the new season will bring while telling you what happens if you neglect podcast promotion. By doing so, I also hope to help you avoid seeing zero downloads on that dashboard—a traumatic scenario for any podcaster. I understand the effort put into creating a show, only to have no listeners can be disheartening. So, let's dive into this topic and discuss a few big changes happening behind the scenes.

The Consequences of Not Promoting Your Podcast

What happens if you decide not to promote your podcast at all? I did a little experiment—I did mention the podcast once in a newsletter—but for almost three months, I didn't promote it on social media or through my newsletter, except for that one time. So, what happened?

I looked at the data right before recording this episode and here's what I found:

  1. Shift in Platform Use: There was a notable shift in platform use. While Spotify has seen growth among users, especially where Android is more prevalent, my US-based audience primarily uses Apple devices. This shift was surprising and suggests behavioral (or audience) changes among listeners, with Spotify launching new features contributing to this change.
  2. Analysis of the Data: Comparing an almost 90-day period of not promoting my podcast to the previous 90-day period, I saw a 30% drop in downloads and unique listeners. This number is interesting as it held consistent across downloads and unique listeners.
  3. Impact on Video Content: The impact was also felt on YouTube, where I had lower view durations and 40% fewer views compared to the previous period. Google continued to drive traffic to my podcast pages due to SEO optimizations, ensuring a steady stream of new traffic. However, without promotion, this viewership decreased.
  4. Consumption Impact: There was also a decline in consumption, with listeners not engaging as deeply with the episodes. This is consistent with attracting "cold traffic" – new audiences unfamiliar with my content.
  5. Inactive Status on Platforms: My podcast showed as inactive on some platforms, which could discourage potential sponsors or new listeners who want active content creators. Despite this, I continued to receive numerous pitches for guest spots, despite not featuring guests for a while.

Embracing Major Changes

Now, let's discuss some exciting news I previously shared on Instagram.

Initially, I planned for about 20 episodes of solos and interviews, but I've decided against it. I'm moving from Dallas, Texas to Bentonville, Arkansas due to my husband's job! To ensure consistency, I've pre-recorded all content in my office. This means a consistent look and sound for the show - something extremely important if you’re trying to create a professional image of your show.

The Three M's: Marketing, Metrics, and Mindset

The theme for this season is very strategic: Marketing, Metrics, and Mindset. These elements are crucial and interrelated. During my coaching and consulting sessions, I often see clients benefitting from adjustments in these areas. Here’s a peek into the topics we’ll cover:

  1. Passively Attracting and Converting Listeners: Learn how to enhance your podcast profile and attract listeners without aggressive promotion.
  2. Crucial Podcast Metrics: Discover the top three podcast metrics that every business

Diving into practical ways to boost the visibility of your podcast

Growing a podcast may not be a walk in the park, but fear not! There are various avenues you can explore to achieve that growth. Whether you have a budget to spare for advertising or prefer more budget-friendly options like podcast swaps and feed drops, we've got you covered.

Now, if the idea of investing in ads or navigating podcast swaps seems overwhelming, don’t stop reading (or listening)! I've compiled a list of nine places where you can gain immediate visibility for your podcast, and the best part is, you can complete all of these in under an hour!

Let's get right into it:

  1. Your Social Media Accounts: Leverage your social media links to share your podcast episodes and engage with your audience. Your online community can be a goldmine for attracting new listeners.
  2. Your Email Signature: Utilize every email you send as an opportunity to promote your podcast by including a link in your email signature - yes, people click! It's a simple yet effective way to spread the word.
  3. Business Cards: If you have business cards, make sure they feature your podcast information. Hand them out during networking events or leave them strategically at relevant places.
  4. LinkedIn Profile Featured Section: Utilize the Featured section on your LinkedIn profile to highlight your podcast episodes and create a professional image for potential listeners.
  5. Website Menu: Incorporate a link to your podcast in the menu of your personal or business website. Make it easily accessible for your website visitors to find it.

27 Sep 2023S1 37. The Recipe for Memorable Interviews and Shareable Content, with Kendall Breitman00:36:41

How Podcasters Can Create Memorable Interviews and Shareable Content

Podcasting is an art that can be mastered with the right skills, insights, and creativity. Today, we delve into an exciting podcast episode featuring Kendall Breitman, a seasoned reporter who’s worked in production for news outlets such as Bloomberg, NCB and Politico. Kendall reveals her secrets to conducting captivating interviews and creating ‘binge-worthy’ podcast content.

Creating a Comfortable Environment

Breitman begins the conversation by introducing the concept of a 'green room conversation.' This term originates from the television industry, where guests would have a pre-show conversation to build rapport and set the tone for the upcoming interview. She advocates for a similar approach in podcasting, emphasizing the need to foster a comfortable environment before the actual interview begins.

This strategy enables guests to relax, thus leading to more natural and authentic conversations. As a podcast host, your energy and tone can significantly influence the interview outcome. Therefore, it is essential to exude the right vibes and foster a sense of connection with your guests.

Embracing a Conversational Interview Style

Abandoning rigid scripts and adopting a more conversational approach to interviews is another powerful tactic shared by Breitman. Rather than sticking to a long list of questions, having three to five bullet points can guide the conversation more organically.

Asking questions about your guests' emotions can create a deeper connection between you, your guest, and your audience. Breitman suggests asking follow-up questions that the listeners would want to know, effectively making the host a proxy for the audience's curiosity. This approach can significantly enhance the audience's engagement and overall listening experience.

20 Dec 2023S1 50. 10 Podcast Marketing Strategies to leave behind in 202400:23:58

Podcast marketing has evolved significantly in 2023, leaving many podcast marketers hesitant to make predictions for 2024. Instead of speculating on future trends, it's crucial to focus on the marketing advice that is no longer effective in the realm of podcasting. In this episode, we will discuss the top 10 marketing strategies to leave behind in 2024, providing context and insights to help you make informed decisions for your podcast.

The importance of getting your podcast basics right

If you want marketing to be easier for your podcast in 2024, it is essential to ensure that you have the basics in place. From content strategy to understanding your listeners' needs, setting goals for your show, and establishing content pillars, these foundational elements form the backbone of a successful podcast. As the podcasting landscape evolves, it is crucial to reassess and adapt your strategies to ensure continued growth and engagement.

You can’t move to 2024 without having clarity on your:

  • listeners’ needs and wants,
  • goals for the show,
  • content pillars,
  • unique viewpoint/selling point,
  • content angle.

Resist following the advice of content gurus

In the digital marketing world, it's easy to be enticed by the advice of content legends who have large teams and extensive resources at their disposal. However, trying to replicate their strategies with limited resources can be overwhelming and counterproductive. Instead of following the advice of these industry giants, focus on learning from podcasters who are a few steps ahead of you. Seek relatable and actionable insights that can be applied to your specific situation.

The significance of episode planning and content calendars

A common mistake in podcasting is not having a clear plan for each episode and lacking a well-organized content calendar. Without a content calendar, episodes may lack a defined purpose, making it challenging to market them effectively. By crafting episodes with a clear angle and understanding why listeners should tune in, you can create targeted marketing strategies that resonate with your audience. Consider aligning your episodes with content pillars and long-term goals to facilitate consistent content creation.

22 May 2024S1 71. How podcasts can turn hosts into agents of change for themselves and their communities00:25:31

Have you ever wondered if by creating podcast episodes you're adding to the internet noise... or perhaps you're lacking motivation because you're not having the ripple effects you were expecting with your content?

Let me share that podcasts can become effective tools for change during times of personal, social, and political unrest. So in this episode of The Podcast Space, I invited Yesenia Bocanegra, host of the Focus and Bloom podcast to dive into the concept of fostering community through podcasts and the ripple effects of even the smallest actions.

Yesenia shares her personal journey of overcoming limiting beliefs and the power of authenticity in content creation. The conversation also touches on the importance of encouragement and support among creators, especially women. The biggest takeaway of this episode is perhaps the significance of pursuing one's (podcast) passion and the unexpected positive impact it can have on others.

08 Feb 2023S1 4. 7 Goals You Can Set For Your Podcast00:18:26

Have you figured out exactly what your podcast purpose is?

This episode will give you the guidance and examples you need so that you can determine what will make your show successful.

I’ve worked with dozens of podcasters in the past 10 years, and I’ve seen shows being used in totally different ways by people with the same job title.

Having a goal for your podcast is as important as getting in a new car and knowing exactly where you're going, but also which roads you need to take in order to get there, just like a GPS, right? A GPS can guide you on your journey, but you're still in the driver's seat, so it's up to you to:

  • Make decisions about where to go, (how fast you want to get there)
  • Which roads to take, (the format it needs to be)
  • How much gas you need in your tank (AKA how long your seasons need to be),
  • which roads are the most efficient (what platforms you need to be on the track the fastest), etc etc.

Topics covered in this episode:

  • Podcast Goals
  • Podcast Purpose
  • Content Ideas
  • Podcast Strategy
  • 7 Ways to Use a Podcast

Takeaways from this episode:

  • There are 7 goals you can set for your podcast. These goals can be combined and changed as necessary, they aren't permanent or inflexible.
  • You can network with decision-makers that will help elevate your brand online by proxy.
  • Your show can be a passion project, it doesn't need to be your day job.
  • It's ok to create thought leadership content in audio and video format - you don't need to write in order to be considered a leader in your industry.

02 Aug 2023S1 29. How to determine if your podcast is successful: Summer Spark Series00:10:51

Welcome to the very first episode of our Summer Spark series! For the upcoming 5 episodes, we’ll explore new perspectives and practical tips to reframe how you view your podcast, and better, more efficient ways to utilize your show to grow your small business.

Launching a podcast is an exciting endeavor, and as hosts, we all want it to be successful. However, the definition of success can vary greatly from one podcaster to another. Many of us fall into the trap of equating success with the number of downloads we receive, or the social status of our guests.

But let me tell you, that's just one part of the equation.

Podcasters with more than 10 episodes are already successful

If you've been podcasting for over six months, congratulations!

You're already ahead of about 70% of podcast hosts who give up before even reaching episode 10. Take a moment to reflect on why you started your podcast in the first place. Forget the download numbers for now; ask yourself if your podcast is achieving what you wanted it to.

Podcasting doesn’t need to be monetized

Maybe you're using your podcast as a testing ground to write your book or exploring your passion for gardening. If so, measuring its success based on downloads alone doesn't do it justice. Are you having meaningful conversations with the people you wanted to reach? Has podcasting motivated you to publish content more consistently?

Remember, having a podcast is a significant achievement in itself. It takes courage to put yourself out there on the internet, and it requires discipline to build both a podcast and an online brand. Embrace the fact that you're providing value to your listeners and elevating your brand in a way that many professionals without an online presence miss out on.

Let's stop obsessing over monetizing our podcasts if it's not the primary aim. If you genuinely enjoy podcasting as a hobby and don't want to compromise, then don't. Success is about aligning your podcast with your original intentions and finding fulfillment in the journey.

As you evaluate your podcasting journey this week, I hope this reminder has helped you redefine what success means for you and your show. Keep going, keep creating, and keep sparking that summer inspiration!

30 Aug 2023S1 33. Can you run out of things to say on your podcast? Summer Spark Series00:09:46

What If You Run Out of Things to Say on Your Podcast?

The final installment of the Summer Spark Series delves into a fear that many of us have at some point: running out of things to say on our podcasts. Yes, it's a daunting thought, but don't worry – I've got your back! Let's tackle this fear head-on and explore some practical strategies to ensure you never run out of podcasting goodness. These are tips I’ve gathered over the past 10 years, as I’ve worked with almost 100 podcasters and worked through the true issues that lay below.

How to never run out of things to say on your podcast

  1. Stay Curious: Never assume that your audience already knows everything about a topic or that they don't want to hear more. Always be curious and explore various angles to keep your content fresh and engaging.
  2. Brain Dumping: Discover the power of brain dumping to test out different podcast ideas quickly and effectively. I discuss how this technique can be a game-changer when it comes to finding compelling topics.
  3. Listen to Your Audience: Pay attention to what's happening around you and what your audience is talking about. I share a personal experience of creating an episode based on solving a specific problem my podcast community was facing.
  4. Get Your Community Involved: You don't have to come up with all the ideas on your own. Make your podcast interactive by involving your listeners and getting their input on topics they want to hear about.
  5. Keep It Simple: Don't overcomplicate your podcast ideas. Sometimes, a topic can be broken into multiple episodes, offering your audience bite-sized content that keeps them coming back for more.
  6. Take Breaks and Communicate: If you feel your inspiration waning, it's okay to take a break from podcasting for a month or two. Just make sure to communicate this with your listeners to keep them in the loop. Take cues from nature itself!
  7. Collaborate: Consider bringing a cohost on board to spice things up and introduce new perspectives to your show. Two voices can be twice as engaging!
  8. Super Episodes: Learn about creating "super episodes" that outperform the rest and become listener favorites. I even offer to help you brainstorm ideas for these outstanding episodes!

Finally, you have an endless reservoir of creativity within you, and this episode will equip you with the tools to keep your podcast vibrant and thriving. Tune in and discover how to maintain a steady stream of exciting content that will keep your listeners coming back for more.

Have you ever found yourself scouring the internet, questioning why your podcast isn’t growing, why you're not booking those dream guests, or why your listeners aren’t converting into devoted customers?

It’s likely rooted in a content strategy that’s a little too safe. Sure, frameworks and best practices are important, but they aren’t the end-all. Sometimes, it’s necessary to dive into problems to effectively solve them—and that’s the essence of this episode’s topic.

Broadening Your Guest Base

Another pitfall is inviting the same circle of guests repeatedly. While familiarity breeds comfort, it can also lead to a “clubby” atmosphere that may alienate listeners. Instead, seek out new voices that bring fresh perspectives, even if stepping out of your comfort zone feels daunting. An exception, of course, is recurring guests who consistently provide value and deliver fresh insights to your audience.

20 Nov 2024S2 86. When and How to Effectively Measure Your Podcast Metrics: A Business Owner's Guide00:15:05

As a business owner, you're familiar with measuring key metrics: leads, website traffic, profits, and losses. But when it comes to your podcast, how often should you track its progress? In this episode, I will delve into how frequently you should measure your podcast's success and what specific metrics you should be monitoring to ensure you're not wasting time or missing crucial opportunities.

Why Should Business OwnersTrack Podcast Metrics?

Your podcast is a pivotal part of your business’s digital footprint. Despite the numerous moving pieces in running a business, it's essential not to neglect your podcast's growth. For those wondering about the optimal frequency for tracking, you're not alone. Many podcast hosts grapple with measuring audience engagement, subscriber growth, and episode consumption.

Download numbers aren't the only metric worth checking.

In fact, many business owners fail to capitalize on a simple yet effective metric: asking your listeners how they heard about you.

Including your podcast in forms or dropdown menus on your website can provide invaluable insight into how your audience finds and interacts with your content, and stop the guessing game about which channels are converting the best!

23 Oct 2024S2 82. What is a podcast content strategist and why does your podcast need one?00:20:49

As the host of The Podcast Space, I've seen firsthand what makes podcasts soar to success.

It's not just about consistently releasing content or maintaining high quality—it's about having a (bold) vision, pushing the envelope, and ensuring you're not navigating this journey alone. That's where a podcast content strategist comes into play.

What is a Podcast Content Strategist?

A common misconception is that podcast strategists are interchangeable with podcast producers or editors. However, these roles are distinct. While an editor hones in on the technical aspects and aesthetics of audio and written content, a strategist takes a comprehensive, data-driven approach to ensuring the content aligns with your brand, audience, goals, and market trends.

Understanding Your Demographics: The Key to Podcast Success

A podcast strategist delves deep into the analytics of your podcast, examining your data, demographics, and audience behavior. Whether you're launching a new podcast or hoping to reinvigorate an existing one, understanding your audience through analytics is essential, guiding decisions on content format, length, and themes.

03 Apr 2024S1 64. Could too much free podcast content negatively impact your business sales?00:16:32

Finding the perfect balance between providing valuable free content and driving sales can be a challenging task for most business owners. Are you giving away too much free content on your podcast? Could it be decreasing sales? These are common questions that many podcasters ponder.

Finding the balance

Creating a successful podcast involves striking a balance between offering free content and leveraging it to drive sales. Throughout this podcast, I emphasize the importance of understanding the nuances of timing and context when determining the impact of your podcast on sales. While excessive free content may initially affect sales, podcasts excel at nurturing an audience over time.

Building Trust and Branding

Podcasts play a significant role in building trust with your audience. That’s why in 2023 podcast hosts became #1 most trusted by online influencers. By consistently delivering valuable content, you establish yourself as an authority in your niche. 04 Dec 2024S2 88. Transforming 'Once-in-a-Lifetime' into Everyday Opportunities Through Podcasting00:15:42

I’ve always had a bit of ‘beef' with the expression "an opportunity of a lifetime."

For me, it’s steeped in a scarcity mindset that we’re better off leaving behind. So in this episode, I’ll share how we can utilize podcasting to embrace an expansive mindset, where opportunities aren't just once-in-a-lifetime but are abundant and recurring.

Turning a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ into a recurring one

Having moved countries twice and successfully moved states in the past 30 days, I can confidently say podcasting is one of the most powerful tools for building influence and securing opportunities - no matter where you are in the world. It’s not about waiting for the right chance to stumble upon your path or waiting for gatekeepers to reply to your emails. Instead, it's about being proactive, visible, and intentional with your podcast to reach your business goals and connect to highly coveted decision-makers.

26 Jul 2023S1 28. 10 listener secrets every podcaster needs to know about00:31:56

The first step to a successful podcast journey is understanding your listeners. From thinking that people don’t want to hear from you, to making intros that make your listeners skip the episode, to creating hours-long content that gets heard by one because you’ve never looked at your analytics, there is so much that podcast hosts never considered and that will make or break the podcast experience. This episode will cover 10 secrets that you need to know about listeners in order to make podcast decisions that will help grow your business. Ready?

Understanding when to follow-through, and when you can break promises you made to listeners

You can even break a promise to your listeners and still maintain their support, as long as you remain authentic and true to your core promise. It’s not about the medium or specifics through which you deliver your promised, but the fact that you do deliver on the what.

Listeners are human after all, and they’re reasonable - being honest and truthful about your circumstances will sometimes further your relationship with them, as it shows a more vulnerable side of you!

The Impact of Show Notes on Downloads

Show notes can be a tricky aspect of podcasting. While detailed show notes may provide a thorough understanding of the episode's content, I believe that they may also decrease the number of downloads, as listeners might opt to read rather than listen. By no means I’m saying that you should forgo accessibility by not offering transcripts or closed captioning), but you should understand that doing show notes that are too thorough will impact listener behavior.

A single superfan can bring you a small crowd of listeners - for free!

A single superfan can be a catalyst for your podcast's growth. Remember that as you’re podcasting, your content is helping a single person and while they may at some point ‘graduate’ from your content, they didn’t forget about you.

Podcast listeners WILL buy from you - when they’re ready

Edison Podcast Metrics measured podcast listener habits in 2020, and they found that weekly US listeners 34% bought products and services advertised in podcasts. In 2023 that number rose to 46%, which is highly encouraging when you’re a business owner using your podcast as a business tool!

Only 10-20% of your listeners will actually reach out online

It’s a shocking truth, but it’s a low number that most hosts struggle with too! Podcast listeners truly need a strong incentive to reach out. If you’re skeptical, just think about the amount of podcasts that you consume every single week, and the amount of times you actually reached out to the podcast’s host - you’ll likely believe me now!

20 Sep 2023S1 36. Podcast Strategy in Action: It isn't what you think! Lori's Success Story00:30:52

If you always wondered what working with a (fun!) podcast strategist looked like, this episode’s for you!

A successful podcast has the power to create strong, authentic connections, foster partnerships, and empower businesses. In this episode, we dive deep into the incredible journey of Lori Williams, a senior living consultant who leveraged the power of podcasting to transform her business and create a lasting impact on her community.

Meet Lori Williams

Lori is a dynamic, passionate, and positive senior living consultant who stepped into the podcasting world with her show, "Aging and Style with Lori Williams". Lori and I have worked together since 2020 to get her dream of educating her community, and to help her stand out from the sea of competitors with a show that felt authentic to her. Through our 3 years of working together, she’s helped hundreds of families navigate the maze of aging and finding the right care for their senior loved ones. What started as an educational show, opened doors to numerous opportunities, including writing a book, getting a partnership with one of her dream organizations, but also connect with her audience on a deeper level.

Navigating Personal Challenges

In December 2022, Lori faced a major personal challenge - her husband suffered a series of strokes. She was thrust into the role of a caregiver while simultaneously managing her business and podcast. Despite the adversities, Lori demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, continuing to deliver insightful and engaging content to her audience.

More than just creating engaging content, Lori used her podcast as a powerful tool for her business growth. Her distinctive voice and insightful episodes have not only won her recognition in her community but have also allowed her to connect with hundreds of clients.

The Role of a Podcast Content Strategist

As Lori's podcast content strategist, I had the privilege of charting this unique podcasting journey with her. Together, we identified her goals, defined her content strategy, and pivoted as necessary to ensure the success of her podcast.

By examining her download numbers and feedback from her audience, we could make informed decisions about future topics and strategies. We also discussed how to repurpose her podcast content across multiple platforms, allowing Lori to be consistently visible online, even during her busiest times.

One of the significant turning points was when we decided to shift focus towards personal experience sharing. This resulted in genuine connections with her listeners and contributed significantly to her podcast growth and impact during her husband’s stroke recovery.

This episode really showcases the different ways you can work with a podcast content strategist that can help you understand the best way to move forward - that doesn’t include stopping the podcast in the face of adversity!

31 Jan 2024S1 55. 1 Year of Podcasting: Has it Been Worth it? Wins, Lessons, and Data Beyond Downloads00:49:10

One Year Running a Podcast as an Entrepreneur

Over the past 12 months, I've clocked in 54 episodes of The Podcast Space’s podcast. The journey as a business owner and a podcast strategist has been an insightful, transparent, and imperfect one. I've gleaned what has worked and what hasn't, and in this episode, I’ll share my insights, wins, and pitfalls I encountered - because to work as a strategist for other businesses is one thing, and to do it all myself is a completely different one.

As a podcast strategist, marketing expert, and unofficial cheerleader for impact-driven entrepreneurs, I always seek to uplift your podcast journey – nudging you to pay attention to key indicators and ignore your inner impostors. Having said that, the pertinent question still stands – Is podcasting an effective tool to build your business and online authority?

What will help you move the needle on your podcast in the most effective way? How can you create a podcast that stays relevant, helps you achieve your goals, and serves your audience? This episode will dive into exactly that.

Embrace Imperfection and Consistency

When you're creating a podcast, remember that conditions don’t need to be perfect to create value. Consistency is key. Your listeners value reliability; they appreciate knowing when to expect new episodes and what kind of value they will get. Focus on the content and its value to your audience over perfect conditions or settings. This thought process will help keep your podcast relevant and build a loyal audience.

02 Oct 2024S2 79. Passing the Vibe Check: Passively Marketing Your Podcast Through Platforms00:17:15

Do you think your podcast would pass the vibe check? And by vibe check, I don't just mean looking cool. I'm talking about whether your ideal listener, seeking new shows without any personal recommendation influencing their decision, will click on your show. Will they play episodes? Will it be a show they become obsessed with?

This is the episode, or should I say, the blog post for you if you’re interested in incorporating more passive marketing strategies alongside your active marketing strategies to grow your show.

Passive Marketing Success: Optimizing Your Podcast Using Your Profile

Perception is Everything

You’ve heard the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover." But the reality is, we do. As a business owner, your podcast plays a huge role in how people perceive your brand. Often, when people launch their podcast, they overlook the perception a new listener has when they see their branding for the first time. Oftentimes, we are used to people coming to us because someone else recommended our work.

Yet, there is real untapped potential for SEO and appearing in search results. Thus, I want to focus on the elements that most people perceive, not just the vibe. So, if you are a business owner, think about how you present yourself to your community. How does your brand look and feel?

A big element we sometimes forget is how people perceive our brand in a quick, snap judgment. The five elements in your profile can be detrimental or beneficial to your brand when done right. Let’s explore these elements: the title, cover art, description of the show, episode titles, and episode description.

06 Dec 2023S1 48. Super Podcast Episodes: what are they and why they matter in content strategy00:12:17

Have you ever heard of the term "super podcast episodes?" If you're a small business owner, these episodes can be a game-changer for your podcast content strategy. They offer an invaluable avenue to address listeners' queries, build authority in your niche, and tap into your audience's interests strategically. In the latest podcast episode, "Super Podcast Episodes: What Are They and Why They Matter in content strategy," we dive deep into the world of super podcast episodes. This blog post will unpack the podcast's key insights to help you elevate your podcasting journey and bolster your business.

Super Podcast Episodes: The Two Categories

Super podcast episodes can broadly be categorized into two types. The first category includes episodes that are organically searched and listened to by the audience. The second category involves episodes strategically pushed by the host to address specific topics, build authority, or solve common problems faced by clients or potential clients. These episodes can be a game-changer for small business owners, serving as a tool for long-term success in podcasting. Not only do they provide valuable content to the listeners, but they also establish the host as a reliable source of information in their field.

Analyzing Data for Content Enhancement

A significant part of creating super podcast episodes involves analyzing your podcast's analytics. It's crucial to identify which episodes resonate with your listeners consistently. In my experience, episodes about marketing, content strategy, and mindset have been among the top performers. Moreover, we also discuss how you can collaborate with us in analyzing data to enhance your content.

In the rapidly evolving world of podcasting, small business owners must adapt and innovate to stay ahead. Creating super podcast episodes is one such strategy that can elevate your podcast game and drive success for your business.

Remember, the key is to strike a balance between your strategic goals and listener interests. Also, embracing authenticity and imperfection in your content can give you a unique edge. Lastly, analyzing your podcast's analytics can provide valuable insights into creating impactful content consistently.

So, gear up to create super podcast episodes that not only resonate with your audience but also serve your business goals effectively.

28 Jun 2023S1 24. Tight schedule? Try these 3 effective episode styles00:13:44

Have you ever found yourself in a pinch, needing to produce a podcast episode, but feeling overwhelmed by time constraints?

Worry not!

This episode is here to guide you through the process of creating a minimum viable product (MVP) podcast episode when you're short on time. Also, learn how to record episodes on the go, without your usual podcasting setup, so you can keep the momentum going no matter where you are.

Struggling to fill an episode with content? There are various strategies for creating podcast episodes on the fly. One of these strategies includes breaking an episode into micro-episodes, recording one-off intros (so you can reuse old content in a coherent way), and using pre-selected segments. This way, you can create an MVP podcast episode that still provides value to your listeners (while avoiding the need to ‘skip the week’).

Furthermore, it is crucial to understand how to break down your content into manageable chunks and craft engaging episodes. This will prevent you from spending precious time if you’re getting stuck in the planning phase, or re-recording multiple times.

Let's delve into each of these strategies in detail.

Valuable Podcasts Under Time Constraints

When faced with time constraints, it's essential to focus on creating an MVP podcast episode. This means delivering a valuable episode without feeling overwhelmed. You can record an episode on the go, without needing your usual podcasting setup. This flexibility can help keep the momentum going. Remember, your listeners don't know if you didn't plan the episode, so don't overthink it.

Consider that perhaps creating an audio-only episode, or promoting it only on one or two platforms that week (instead of three) is better than releasing none. Be realistic!

Creating Shorter Podcast Episodes

One strategy for creating podcast episodes on the fly is to break an episode into micro-episodes. This strategy involves focusing on one topic and providing valuable insights on it. It's crucial to choose a topic you're comfortable talking about so that the recording process becomes easy and natural - you don’t want to be second-guessing yourself when you’re tight on time!

Another strategy is to record a standalone intro. This intro can be a versatile tool in your toolbox, allowing you to introduce podcast replays, replay series, or episode takeovers. Remember to keep it short and generic so that it doesn't clash with the regular episode.

Practical Content Strategy Tips

Finally, it's important to break down your content into manageable chunks and craft an episode that is both practical and engaging for your audience. This will help prevent you from getting stuck in the early stages of planning - you can ask yourself:

  • ‘If the one takeaway from this episode was a quote from the internet, what would it say?’ Work backwards from there.
  • Don’t obsess over what your peers ‘may think or say’. What matters is your commitment to being there for your listeners, when you promised you’d be there. Who knows, by getting creative, you may realize you actually enjoy the podcast doing things in a different way!

Remember, it's not about the amount of content you produce, but the value that content provides to your listeners.

29 Nov 2023S1 47. How to read podcast analytics like a pro so you can grow your podcast00:24:11

If I were to ask you, ‘what do you think about when I mention podcast analytics?’

If your first answer was, well, obviously podcast downloads, well, you wouldn't be alone. Most podcasters think that way. But the reality is that podcast downloads don't share the whole story. When you've been podcasting for a while, it can feel like there's so much that you don't know about your audience. What is actually working? What isn't? And how to turn those listeners into paying customers or a supportive community. In this episode, we will dive deep into podcast analytics and explore why they are so much more than just download numbers. We will discuss why understanding podcast analytics is crucial for your podcast's success and how you can leverage this data to grow your audience and achieve your podcasting goals.

02 Feb 2023S1 3. How to leverage your audience for diversity & brand deals with Lloyd George00:25:12

“Ask and you shall receive”

We all have goals. And however you’re thinking about achieving them, if it requires an ask, remember that when asked, there’s a 50% chance of the other person saying ‘yes’ to your request!

So… why wouldn’t you ask?

In the second part of this podcast interview with Digital Creator Lloyd George, we focused on the incredible outcomes of looking at content creation as a tool to progress in life faster, and the insane results that can happen once you ask without being afraid of a ‘no’.

When I first started, the question I'd ask myself was ‘How can I get 10,000 people to see this?’
And now, the question I'm asking is ‘How can I get 10 people to message me about this and say, this was really helpful.’
Lloyd George

Content creation is a skill easier to capitalize than you think

When it comes to like sponsorships and brand deals, being a creator and creating content online is a skill, according to Lloyd.

The longer you do it, the better you get at it. Reaching out to people to give you money is the exact same thing. So according to Lloyd, you could be excellent at asking people to sponsor you, but not necessarily be a great creator or not have a lot of downloads and still make a lot of money. Just like large creators don’t always make that much money, because for whatever reason, they haven't honed the skill, or they don't ask.

Above all, partnerships and opportunities that you’re wanting to check off your list could potentially be achieved just by asking one person a day. Or by noticing a gap in the market, and creating content specifically to fill that gap, as Lloyd did about Black Podcasters.

You have the power to bring awareness to the issues in your community. Don’t underestimate the value of the content you’re creating.

04 Oct 2023S1 38. The Downside of 'Fake It Till You Make It' in Podcasting00:14:36

Should podcasters ‘fake it until they’ve made it’?

Do you subscribe to the “fake it till you make it” philosophy?

In the podcasting industry, this mindset might actually limit your growth.

As an experienced podcasting consultant, I want to challenge this belief and explore the potential setbacks it may bring. Imposter syndrome is a common struggle among podcasters.

Embracing the “fake it till you make it” approach can inadvertently intensify these feelings. Instead of appreciating your current stage, you might undermine it, hindering your progress as a host, interviewer, or editor. However, this critique is not aimed at demonizing the concept of 'faking it.' Instead, it serves as an opportunity to introduce viable alternatives.

The problem of podcasters’ unrealistic expectations

One critical aspect to address is the unrealistic expectations and burnout resulting from pressure to match the quality and output of larger teams.

Many podcasters, especially those just starting, are one-person ‘band’. Comparing your work to a team of five is unrealistic and counterproductive. Furthermore, there are common misconceptions about investing in equipment.

A common belief is that a significant investment in fancy equipment equals a higher podcast quality- admit it, you’re often looking at the popular Shure sm7b, right?

However, that money might be better spent elsewhere, such as on paid ads to grow your show or hiring a podcast consultant to help you develop a successful strategy.

Creating diverse content is essential for connecting with different audience segments. Not every episode needs to be a blockbuster. Recognizing that different episodes serve different purposes and will resonate differently with your audience is crucial for sustainable content creation. The key is fostering authenticity, cultivating gratitude for every learning opportunity, and embracing your unique podcasting journey.

Instead of subscribing to the “fake it till you make it” approach, consider channeling your future successful self. Envision what success looks like for you and take steps towards that vision while appreciating your current stage. Believe that you are worthy of podcast success at every stage of your journey. Start a notebook of achievements and refer back to it when self-doubt creeps in. Accept that you are worthy of taking up space in your current state. Create content that feels authentic and meet your audience where they are. Remember to question the “why” behind your goals to ensure they align with your authentic desires.

Remember, you don’t need to wait for significant wins to celebrate. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. Success in podcasting, as in any other field, is a journey. Embrace your unique path and let go of the “fake it till you make it” mantra. Instead, channel your ‘most successful future self’ and keep creating content that moves you forward. Your future successful self is waiting for you.

03 Jan 2024S1 51. Determining your podcast’s ‘why’ to ensure long-term success: Podcast Basics00:16:48

Creating and maintaining a successful podcast goes beyond having the fanciest equipment or appealing to the latest trends. It's about knowing your "why" and getting your basics right. As we kickstart this year, I’m excited to share a series of podcast episodes on podcasting basics. In this first episode, we will dive deep into the importance of determining your podcast's why and set the foundation for a successful and impactful show.

Understanding the Long-Term Impact of a Podcast

Your Podcast is a Marathon, Not a Sprint:

Podcasting serves as a powerful networking tool, providing access to an expansive community. Whether it's directly through your podcast or by appearing as a guest on other shows, the potential for meaningful connections is staggering. As the podcasting industry evolves, with the rise of platforms like YouTube Music, opportunities for networking continue to multiply.

Avoiding Burnout with Clear Intentions:

Podcasting offers a platform to showcase your expertise to a wider audience. Solo episodes or inviting expert guests provide avenues to establish credibility, authority, and thought leadership. In upcoming episodes, we will explore various podcast episode formats that can elevate your authority and expertise effectively.

Seamless Content Creation for Enhanced Online Presence:

Podcasting serves as a central hub for your online content strategy. By integrating your podcast with newsletters, social media platforms, and websites, you can engage with your audience in a more relaxed and immersive manner. This approach fosters a stronger community connection and breaks the barriers of traditional written content.

12 Jun 2024S1 74. Podcast Audiences' Listening Habits Revealed: Insights to better grow your show00:22:19

Podcasts are more popular than ever, transcending generations, countries, races, and backgrounds. So you might be wondering, "Okay, people are listening, but where and when are they tuning in? And how can I optimize my podcast for growth?"

That's exactly what we'll dive into today. I'm Ana Xavier, a podcast marketing expert, here to break down actionable insights you can apply to your show and understand your audience better.

Evaluating Audience Listening Habits

If you’re listening to this in real time, it's June, and summer is knocking on the door. You might be asking, "Should I release new episodes or take a break to optimize my processes and learn more about my audience?" The answer hinges on understanding where your listeners are and how to keep them engaged.

In this episode, I delve into two reports: the Podcast Consumer Report by Edison Research (released in May 2024) and the 2023 Podcast Edition of the Fan Study by Spotify for Podcasters.

Audience Behavior Across the Year

Research indicates that podcast consumption is influenced by specific times of the year. Key periods for gaining new listeners include January, March, July, and October. These months coincide with specific life events and seasonal changes, making them prime times for listener engagement.

Research also advises against releasing new shows in November due to the busy holiday season, which can make acquiring new listeners more challenging.

14 Feb 2024S1 57. From overwhelmed and invisible, to confident, influential, and being paid to podcast: the results of my coaching program with Hetal Baman00:44:00

Podcasting continues to grow as a vibrant and compelling platform to amplify your voice and impact, tell your story, or share essential knowledge with the world. Yet, the journey into the podcasting world can be daunting and, most times, overwhelming! If you ever wondered what podcast coaching (with me) could look like, take a listen to this episode featuring my PodParty Success Roadmap coaching program Hetal Baman, host of the Global Health Pursuit podcast, and dive into the immense value of podcast coaching highlighted by Hetal’s personal success.

From receiving weekly listener and peer messages to receiving $2,500+ listener donations, to talking to organizations featured on Netflix documentaries, Hetal’s story undoubtedly shows what can happen when you stop trying to ‘make it’ alone.

Unpacking Hetal's Podcast Growth through Coaching

Facing the question of whether podcast coaching is worth it, Hetal shares her perspective. Starting with an online world where people claim to have grown their podcast substantially, she reflects on her journey and successes and attributes them largely to the unique approach brought by the PodParty Success Roadmap: From Struggle to Celebration in 90 Days.

The crux of her growth journey revolves around unraveling the mystery of what proper coaching entails and understanding the possible results you might draw from it. It's about unraveling the specific, unique potential each podcast holds, working with a strategy suitable for your podcast, and learning how to connect more deeply with your audience.

From Burnout to Podcast Breakthroughs

Though Hetal boasts of a rich background in engineering and a passion for global health, her initial attempt at podcasting led to burnout and a hiatus from her passion. The act of juggling a high-stress job, maintaining her podcast, battling the mental tug-of-war of her deep-seated desire for achievement, and her reluctance to seek help became her breaking point.

However, 2022 brought with it a renewed sense of direction and purpose. The fire ignited once more; Hetal sought the help of an experienced podcast coach who has a more down-to-earth and practical approach than most online coaches. With newfound determination, Hetal's podcast was successfully relaunched. Now with 47 content-packed episodes under her belt, and counting, the stop button is a non-option.

01 Nov 2023S1 43. How to incorporate listener feedback on your podcast strategy, and when to ignore it00:23:57

As a podcaster, your ultimate goal is to create engaging content that resonates with your audience. In an era where listener feedback is more accessible than ever before, it's essential to tap into this rich source of information to improve your content. In this episode, I break down how to use listener feedback effectively so that you’re not spinning your wheels unnecessarily, but more importantly, understand how you can use it in your marketing to increase your listener engagement!

The Power of Podcast Listener Feedback

Listener feedback is an invaluable tool in the podcasting world. It provides insight into what your audience thinks about your content and can guide you on how to improve it. Whether the feedback is direct (written or voice messages) or indirect (analytics on your podcast hosting platform), all feedback can be used to elevate your podcasting journey and achieve your podcast goals.

Optimizing Listener Engagement and Feedback

Understanding listener feedback is just one part of the equation; the other part is using this feedback to optimize listener engagement. Using feedback as clues, you can promote content, create compelling stories, and position your podcast strategically. Connecting directly with listeners through platforms like Direct Messages (DMs), and encouraging feedback with creative visuals can significantly enhance listener engagement.

Regular audits of your platforms can also ensure a smooth user experience and boost audience engagement. Furthermore, experimenting with different approaches and keeping open communication with your audience can lead to more feedback and insights.

Podcast Feedback in Different Platforms

Different platforms can give you different feedback. For instance, some episodes may perform well on YouTube but not so much on audio podcast platforms. Understanding these differences can help you tailor your content for each platform and attract the right audience.

Listener feedback is a crucial component of podcasting. By understanding and utilizing it, you can improve your content, increase listener engagement, and grow your podcast. Remember to always test alternative approaches, keep open communication with your audience, and don't forget to subscribe to The Podcast Space's newsletter for additional resources.

Embrace the feedback, learn from it, and let it guide you towards a successful podcast journey.

08 Mar 2023S1 8. A quick guide to micro podcast episodes00:08:16

Are you struggling to produce podcast content for your small business? Because Micro-episodes can be the perfect solution for time-strapped entrepreneurs who want to stay consistent without burning out.

Micro-episodes are excellent for small business owners because they allow them to create short, focused, and easy-to-produce content that can be consumed quickly by their audience.

What are micro episodes?

Micro episodes are short episodes that normally run from 3 to 15 minutes. They may have a different structure and sometimes they have no pre-recorded intro, or music at all.

This type of shows are an excellent alternative to long-form content, which can be time-consuming and costly to produce. By creating bite-sized content, small business owners can engage their audience regularly without sacrificing quality, or feeling overwhelmed.

How to plan a micro episode:

Teaser / hook

Short intro (under 15 seconds) / Sound effect

Topic introduction

Further topic context

Call to action (CTA)

Quick outro (under 15 seconds)

There’s no doubt that podcasting is an influential tool for online communication for small businesses and professionals.

But standing out in the sea of podcasting takes dedication, focus, and passion for the medium - three elements that not everyone’s willing to commit to in the long run.

Whether you’re just starting in the industry, or you’re willing to go from amateur, to professional, there are 6 elements that you MUST have in order to be taken seriously as a podcaster in the online space.

A website (that you own) is a must-have

As you start your podcast (or get busy with the weekly publishing schedule), you may start believing that you don’t need a website: in fact, don’t listeners just subscribe to it on podcast platforms? The answer is no- you still do need a website.

A website is the first, and perhaps the most important element if you’re wanting to go pro in the podcast world. Can you remember the last time you googled someone and you couldn’t find their website? The first thought you probably had was, ‘Do they even exist? Can I really trust them?’. That same principle applies to podcasting, too.

In a previous article, I’ve broken down podcast websites’ must-haves.

To optimize your online presence, your website should have a landing page with an About section, a podcast player, and a space for audience feedback. Additionally, having a podcast tab on your website is essential because it helps potential listeners find your podcast easily. Podcast listeners are more likely to buy and trust the person who is speaking, so having a podcast tab on your website is an effective way to showcase your podcast to people who found you via Google, and increase your audience.

Also covered in this episode:

  • Why is having a website crucial for podcasters?
  • How can podcasters protect their digital footprint, given the industry's volatility?
  • Why your social media needs an audit
  • How a professional bio can get you further along
  • The type of headshots you need in your episode
  • Why a booking link is fundamental to an effortless experience

Takeaways from the episode:

  • Owning your domain name is essential for podcasters, ensuring you are in control of your digital footprint.
  • A landing page with an About section, a podcast player, and a space for audience feedback can optimize your online presence without overwhelming you.
  • A podcast tab on your website helps potential listeners find your podcast easily and can increase your audience.
  • Wix is an excellent option for those who are not tech-savvy, as it has great designs and layouts.
  • A bio document is fundamental to be taken seriously: make sure that you include a high-resolution headshot (not a selfie!), and the topics you’re an expert in.

26 Apr 2023S1 15. 5 phrases to scrap from your vocabulary if you want your podcast to succeed00:20:27

Are you unknowingly using certain phrases that are limiting your podcast growth?

Are you waiting for the ‘perfect’ time to launch your podcast?

Or are you holding back because you fear judgment?

As a podcast expert with over 10 years of experience, I have worked with several podcasters and observed common mistakes that they make, one of which is the use of certain phrases that they are unaware can negatively affect their podcast growth. So if you want to avoid these pitfalls and boost your podcast growth, this is the episode you’ve been waiting for!

Why are these 5 phrases so important to be removed from your vocabulary?

The way you talk to yourself, and how you frame your show are essential to the growth and success of your podcast. The phrases we will be discussing in this episode can potentially harm your podcast growth by preventing you from reaching a larger audience, holding you back from launching, or limiting your content creation abilities. By identifying these phrases and avoiding them, you will be able to attract more listeners, create better content, and grow your podcast exponentially.

Here are the five phrases that could be harming your podcast growth and how to overcome them:

  1. "My podcast is for everyone": While this statement may seem inclusive, it can actually be detrimental to your podcast growth. Narrowing down your target audience allows you to create content that specifically caters to their needs, increasing your chances of retaining them as loyal listeners, and guides your content decision-making. Need help creating your ideal listener community? I cover it in detail in my course Maximize Your Podcast Content.
  2. "I am not experienced enough to talk about X topic": Don't let imposter syndrome hold you back. Instead of declining topics that you feel you are not knowledgeable enough to talk about, conduct research on Google, or invite guests who have the required expertise.
  3. "I need to wait until the perfect time until ____": Waiting for the perfect moment can hold you back from launching or creating content, leading to a missed opportunity to gain momentum. The best time to launch or create content is now, don't let fear of judgment hold you back. In this section, I share the shocking percentage of creators that never launch ideas.
  4. "I can't afford it/I can't invest": Investing in your podcast can feel scary, but it's essential to its growth. If you can't afford to hire professional help, consider reaching out to your network or trading/bartering services with others, or look into buying up subscriptions for the year.
  5. "My audience is too small": Don't let a small audience discourage you. Keep creating quality content, and over time, your audience will grow. Here I shared one of the most shocking experiences I had as a podcast producer.

In conclusion, avoiding these phrases will help you attract more listeners, create better content, and grow your podcast. Remember to narrow down your target audience, conduct thorough research, and don't let fear hold you back from launching or creating content.

Topics covered on this episode:

  • Limiting Beliefs
  • Podcasting fears
  • Podcast Growth tactics
  • How to grow your podcast

Takeaways from the episode:

  • Avoid using limiting phrases that may be hurting your podcast's growth and reach.
  • The riches is in the niches.
  • Fear of judgment or waiting for the perfect time can hold you back from launching your podcast, but remember that momentum is key.
  • Don't let perceived obstacles like budget or audience size stop you from creating a successful podcast. Look for creative solutions and opportunities to...

Mastering the Art of Podcast Growth: Secrets to Extraordinary Success during Sabbaticals

A sabbatical - an extended break or hiatus - is a concept most of us are familiar with. In academia, it's a well-established practice. In the corporate world, it's gaining recognition. But have you ever thought about taking a sabbatical from your podcast?

In this podcast episode, I’m sharing my recent experience of taking a 5-week sabbatical from my podcast and business. I’ll be updating you on the unexpected journey, the lessons learned, and tips for other podcasters considering a break. I’ll also break down how I prepared for my time away, and how I took my knowledge in content strategy and listener behavior to craft a plan that worked for my podcast while I was gone.

Embarking on a Podcast Sabbatical

My sabbatical was an opportunity to reconnect with myself, friends and family, taking time from the week-to-week rut of publishing podcast content, but also to think bigger picture about what truly lights me up.

By scaling back on social media and emails, I’ve opted for a "post and ghost" strategy, expecting it to be a viable option to provide educational content to my audience while I was away. However, this tactic confirmed what I expected, causing a noticeable decrease in my social media reach, especially on Instagram. Engagement matters, and if you're planning a sabbatical, consider how you'll maintain audience interaction- in my case, Instagram will be off the books.

The Unexpected Surge in Podcast Popularity

While away, I’ve noticed something unusual. My podcast downloads surged by a staggering 1200% over the month, catapulting The Podcast Space into the top 15 Marketing charts in Portugal and Sweden. Initially, I’ve suspected bot activity but realized that this unexpected popularity had more to it - at least in the organic aspect of it. The engagement on Spotify and Apple Podcasts also grew, and I’ve received several positive messages from listeners, revealing that the content was being appreciated and consumed heavily even during my absence.

My sabbatical proved that taking a break doesn't necessarily mean losing your audience or your business momentum. Instead, it can result in unexpected benefits, like a surprising surge in podcast popularity or listener appreciation.

Planning for a Podcast Sabbatical

A sabbatical doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. There are three types of sabbaticals: one where you do absolutely nothing, one where you focus on learning something new, and a hybrid of both.

During my break, I chose the hybrid approach, taking the time to upskill by reading and learning new things, speaking a few different languages (I’m multilingual after all) while also disconnecting from work.

The Aftermath of a Podcast Sabbatical

In conclusion, a podcast sabbatical, when planned and executed correctly, can be a beneficial move. Not only can it provide the much-needed break for the host, but it can also lead to unexpected growth and engagement for the podcast.

If you're considering a sabbatical, this podcast episode is a must-listen, packed with practical insights, personal experiences, and invaluable tips to ensure your podcast doesn't just survive your break, but thrives.

13 Sep 2023S1 35. 8 Skills You’ll Master Through Podcasting00:20:02

Endless skill up when you podcast

Your podcast is more than just online content for your brand: when used correctly, the podcast can boost your business, but the biggest boost will be in yourself!

Before diving into the actual skills, let’s take a minute to acknowledge that apart from the obvious improvement in your public speaking skills, all of these will only occur when you’re truly committed to growth.

The true up level only happens when you’re:

  1. willing to actually improve
  2. self-aware
  3. listening back to older episodes
  4. hiring a podcast coach in whatever need you have when you’re stuck.

Which skills do you master when you Podcast?

1. Improvisation Skills

Welcome to the world of podcasting, where improvisation takes center stage. As a podcast host, you'll quickly become a master of thinking on your feet, crafting engaging conversations on the fly, and navigating unexpected twists and turns with ease.

2. Interpersonal Skills

In today's digital age, many of us struggle to connect with strangers due to social anxiety or limited practice. But imagine honing your interpersonal skills while being in complete control of the conversation, discussing topics you're passionate about. Think of it as a safe space to practice socialization, even during a pandemic.

3. Interviewing and Listening Skills

Being a great interviewer means being an exceptional listener. A skilled host picks up on subtle nuances in their guests' responses, allowing for deeper, more engaging conversations. A well-prepared host knows that curiosity and flexibility, rather than sticking rigidly to a script, lead to compelling interviews.

4. Networking Skills

Networking can be daunting, but it's all about perspective. Shift from seeing it as "forced meetings" to discover common ground and learning from others. Remember, "your network is your net worth," and podcasting provides a unique platform to expand your circle of influence.

5. Pitching Skills

Hosting a podcast allows you to pitch various ideas, messages, and skills simultaneously. You can present your agenda directly to listeners, indirectly showcase your expertise, and introduce your services—all in an intimate and engaging way.

21 Jun 2023S1 23. Transform Your Podcast Strategy with Marketing Psychology Insights from Melina Palmer00:46:27

Do you want to level up your podcasting game?

Are you interested in understanding user behavior to achieve a new level of success in your podcast?

If the answer is yes, then you must listen to this episode featuring Melina Palmer, CEO of the Brainy Business and host of the Brainy Business podcast. Her expertise in applied behavioral economics will transform the way you approach your content creation and marketing strategies!

Applying behavior economics to find your podcast’s blind spots

In this podcast episode, we explore the fascinating world of user behavior and how to apply it to fast-track your podcast success. We discuss how to find your tribe, create a voice that resonates with your audience, and leverage your podcast to achieve your unique vision of success. Additionally, we dive into the importance of understanding what success means to you, avoiding getting caught up in vanity metrics, and focusing on what comes next in your podcasting journey.

Melina shares how she set the podcast to not only educate, but to lead amazing projects and big-name brands to work with her, and also teaching a certificate program in applied behavioral economics at Texas A&M, and even landing a book deal. She emphasizes the value of kindness and respect in the industry and describes how podcasting can be an act of self-care.

My favorite part of the interview is to hear Melina talk about how she found her ‘blue ocean’ strategy in her industry, and how her work is now featured in Inc. Magazine, all thanks to her dedication and hard work on her weekly podcast.

Why User Behavior Matters

Melina emphasizes the importance of considering user behavior when creating content: understanding the psychology behind why people buy, helps you can leverage your podcast to achieve the success you’re looking for. Avoid comparing yourself to others, and remember that it's not necessary to be on all social media channels all the time to reach success.

Success in Niche Podcasting

Melina explains how her background in marketing and brand strategy helped her create her podcast and find success. Understand what success means to you when it comes to podcasting and focus on building relationships that can lead to future opportunities. Remember that vanity metrics such as thousands of downloads don't mean much when you don’t have clarity on what you want listeners to do next.

Podcasting, Psychology, and Being Kind

Melina shares inspirational stories of collaborating with extremely talented people, how teaching a certificate program in applied behavioral economics at Texas A&M came through a loyal listener that she engaged with after doing a regular shout out on her show. She emphasizes the importance of being kind (like Betty White) and respectful to people in the industry and the rewards it can bring. Podcasting can be an act of self-care, and if you love what you do, you become magnetic.

Maximizing Podcast Content Value

Learn how to leverage content to create a successful podcast, and be open about the work you do - mention it multiple times to attract potential clients. Additionally, consider creating episodes that listeners can refer to when they need help or advice, as you’ll be saving yourself time in future conversations.

Takeaways from this episode:

  • By focusing on creating value-first content, you’re signaling to your listeners that you’re the right person to do the work.
  • Never underestimate how being the first disruptor in your industry can give you a competitive advantage in your industry for years to come.
  • Having a podcast is still considered a higher value medium compared to writing articles or blogs - you can still impress
31 May 2023S1 20. Solo Episodes: The Key To Growing Your Business and Influence00:23:43

As a small business owner, you may have considered launching a podcast to reach your target audience and grow your brand. Podcast interviews are a popular format, but have you ever considered incorporating solo podcast episodes into your content strategy? Solo episodes can turn regular listeners into warm leads, provide educational content, and help you achieve your podcasting goals. In this episode, I’ll be sharing the true power of solo podcast episodes and how they can elevate your podcast’s content strategy.

The Importance of Solo Podcast Episodes

Solo podcast episodes are an important part of your content strategy, as they can provide a more intimate and focused conversation with your listeners. By creating educational content, deepening relationships in your industry, helping people understand if you’re the right professional to help them, crafting thought leadership content, and creating YouTube and organic search content, solo episodes can contribute to the growth and success of your podcast.

Creating Effective Solo Podcast Episodes

To create effective solo podcast episodes, focus on one topic per episode to make marketing easier and ensure your content is valuable to your listeners. The ideal length of solo episodes can vary, but it's important to keep your content concise and to the point. Avoid using music or sound effects in your solo episodes, as they can distract from the message you are trying to convey.

Transitioning to Solo Podcasting

If you're unsure how to start incorporating solo episodes into your podcast, begin by practicing your speaking skills through short videos or Instagram stories-that was exactly the strategy I used to ‘trick’ myself into doing it in a bite-size format back in 2020! This will help you become more comfortable speaking on camera and focusing on a single topic.

Additionally, consider repurposing existing content, such as blog posts or FAQs, into solo podcast episodes. This can help you create valuable content for your listeners while also saving time and effort in the content creation process.

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Solo podcast episodes can be a powerful addition to your content strategy, helping you connect with your audience and grow your small business.
  • By focusing on one topic per episode and practicing your speaking skills, you can create valuable content that resonates with your listeners and helps you achieve your podcasting goals.
  • Don't be afraid to embrace the opportunity to create imperfect content that moves your business forward, and discover the power of solo podcast episodes.

15 Mar 2023S1 9. Podcasting on the Go00:08:56

Did you know that the top two reasons for Podfade (podcasts that suddenly drop off the face of the Earth) are overwhelm, and lack of interest in podcasting?

The thing is that Podfade doesn't need to happen to you, if you're proactive and creative about your process.

I've created this episode to help you think of podcasting as an actual process to experiment with. At the end of the day, it's your show, so you can call the shots on the best ways to podcast. But you may be asking yourself…

How can I podcast on the go?

The answer is simple: consider how you best work, and don’t be afraid to try new things!

If your brain gets activated when you:

  • go for a walk
  • go on road trips
  • like to be in nature or gardening
  • are in new places

Then you have to consider podcasting outside your studio walls.

Topics covered in this episode:

  • Podcast on the go
  • Podfade
  • Podcast overwhelm
  • Podcast experimentation
  • Podcast content
  • Podcast ideas

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Experimentation leads to newfound creativity in your podcast process.
  • As long as you set up expectations with your audience, it’s possible to create professional content that is more ‘mobile’, or that doesn’t have ‘studio quality’.
  • Podfade happens because of a lack of a process that works with the podcaster’s routine and habits.
  • Not enough podcasters experiment with podcasting on the go because they think they’re supposed to be stuck at the studio, creating content.

19 Apr 2023S1 14. 3 practical tips to achieve the consistency of a content guru00:15:45

The creator economy is here to stay.

Being a creator today means that if you have something valuable to say, you will be able to grow a following.

But what most podcasters and business owners just like yourself forget, is that it isn't just about starting a podcast / video blog / social media account that's hard. The hardest part about the content creation journey is staying in the game.

I often tell my podcast clients not to worry when a competitor (or peer) launches a podcast, because if their intentions/ efforts aren't in the right place, they're likely to give up the show after a mere 10-20 episodes - yes, I've seen it countless times. And if they do happen to stick with it, then it provides an opportunity to potentially do a podcast swap and cross promote shows - so a win, win!

However, being part of this creator economy comes at a price: you need to feed the content machine in order to achieve your goals (we’ve covered that in detail on episode 4: 7 Goals you can set for your podcast).

But how do you stay consistent (and motivated) as a content guru?

It all comes down to 3 elements, mainly focused on one external and two internal factors:

  • External perception / social expectations
  • Your Zone of Genius
  • Your optimal creation Zone

In the episode, I talk about how these manifest, and how to shift your mindset in order to create content like a guru.

Extra TIP: Keep reminders of your zone of genius, podcast reviews, client testimonials and other positive elements nearby when you’re recording - they’ll remind you of how much of a legacy you’re creating for them!

Topics covered on this episode:

  • Base of content creation
  • Podcast Consistency
  • Content Strategy
  • Content growth for podcasters

Takeaways from the episode:

  • Staying in the long game will pay off. Most content creators give up after 10-20 episodes being published.
  • Focusing on serving your community should be your focus, not trying to curate a perfect image of yourself for your peers.
  • How you create content is different than most people- maybe your schedule doesn’t allow for weekly interviews, or you’ve been feeling overwhelmed with a video podcast. Whatever it is, it’s time to revisit what you’re doing in order to create excitement and momentum that drives engagement!

22 Mar 2023S1 10. 10 signs that show that you're podcasting from a place of fear00:15:16

Podcasting is one of the most popular forms of media today, and it is growing in popularity every day. So much so that many people podcast out of passion, while others podcast out of fear. In fact, you could be Podcasting out of fear and you may not have noticed it. Fear can be detrimental to both the podcaster and the listener: that’s why it is important to recognize the signs so that you can pivot into a more positive place!

In this episode, I cover the 10 signs that show that you’re diving into fear-based content, and explain what to do instead.

Topics covered in this episode:

  • How to Identify Signs of Fear-Based Podcasting
  • Crafting Perfect Content vs. Good Enough Content
  • Using Language Appropriate for Your Listeners
  • Finding your voice
  • Humanizing Your Brand with Imperfect Content
  • Avoiding Talking Over Your Listeners' Heads

Takeaways from the episode:

  • As someone who's worked with 50+ hosts over the years, I can tell when a host is podcasting in a fear-based mindset - and no, it's not coming from their voice, but from the content itself!
  • There are a lot of reasons why you may move from a passion or purpose-driven episode, to one focused on fear. Sometimes it's because a stranger on the internet made a mean comment, or because you're still finding your voice.
  • Here are top 5 reasons that give fear away: Constantly over explaining the content, Putting the content through your peers' magnifying lens at all times, Obsessing over 'perfection' to the point that the episodes get re-recorded often, Creating highly complex and hard-to-follow episodes, Not wanting to be 'salesy'

08 May 2024S1 69. The 2 reasons why people listen to podcasts00:17:01

Have you ever wondered why people tune in to podcasts?

What makes them hit that subscribe button and eagerly await each new episode? In this episode, we will delve into the two main reasons why people listen to podcasts, explore the pros and cons of each approach, and uncover some valuable tips for creating a successful podcast that resonates with your audience.

Uncovering the Driving Forces Behind Podcast Consumption

When it comes to understanding the allure of podcasts, it all boils down to two key elements:

  • the topic,
  • the personality.
  • Listeners are drawn to podcasts either because they have a genuine interest in the subject matter being discussed or because they connect with the host on a personal level (who doesn’t want to be a fly-in-the-wall with two besties discussing life?)

31 Jan 2023S1 2. Experimenting with Your Process: Tips from Lloyd George00:40:35

The ebbs and flows of the journey of a content creator

What happens behind the lens and microphone of a content creator? A lot.

Being a creator and podcaster today can mean a variety of things. But how do you figure out what works for you, and how long to do it for until it’s time to switch it up?

Lloyd George is a content creator by night & project manager by day. His company Cre8tor Hub helps content creators start, manage and grow their podcast.  I first met Lloyd after scrolling through TikTok and stumbling (and obsessing about his) incredible videos about his podcast journey.

Since January 2022, he’s accumulated over 1.5 million views and has continued building a community of aspiring podcasters through tips, giveaways, and resourceful content for beginners. Lloyd started dabbing into the podcasting world in 2018, and I’ve invited him on the show so that he could share his experience of starting a podcast and how it has increased his confidence not only in the podcasting world but in his personal life as well.

No one says, 'if you're not going to be a multi-book author, don't write.'
(Podcasting) is a creative journey of exploration, and the more you do it, you'll find out if you like it and not, but you'll never know if you never try.
Lloyd George

It’s all about Mindset and Community

Mindset can be limiting, or freeing, and so Lloyd and I also dived into the scarcity mindset that many creators have (especially podcasters!) and how instead of viewing other creators as competition, you can support and share their content or use it as a starting point for your own episode. Spoiler alert: we’re stronger together!

Lloyd and I share our love for creating community through authentic content, and this episode ended up being more of a conversation of two creators who ‘met’ (virtually) after months of following and admiring each other’s work online, so I also ended up unveiling a lot of my own process of The Podcast Space’s online strategy, building a Membership, a course, and allowing myself to figure it out as I go. We speak about the ups and downs of the content creation journey and the importance of being part of a community in order to stay motivated in the long run.

We also focus on the importance of making small tweaks to your content creation process, which can have a big impact on your podcast: Lloyd shares how tweaking his podcast flow almost doubled his episode downloads. And what you need to know in order to create content that performs well on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and more.

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Podcast process
  • The journey of the content creator
  • Podcast content strategy
  • Limiting beliefs as a podcaster
  • How to start your journey in podcasting

Takeaways from this episode:

  • Try new things regularly: Try new things every 2 weeks to keep your content fresh and interesting. This can lead to finding a new approach that works better for you and your audience.
  • Optimize your content: Optimize your content for the platform you have chosen to focus on, for example, for YouTube, use keywords in the title and tags, have an attention-grabbing thumbnail, and upload from your desktop to increase likelihood of success.
  • Be part of a community: Being part of a supportive community can help you overcome challenges and stay motivated. Support other creators and use their content as a starting point for your own ideas.
  • Make an impact: Instead of trying to produce the perfect piece of content, focus on making an impact and getting someone to think....
25 Oct 2023S1 42. Podcast SEO 2: A Practical Guide to Multimedia Content & YouTube, with Sarah McDowell00:21:16

As a podcaster, do you often wonder how to enhance your podcast's visibility on Google? In an era of rapidly evolving technology, the answer is at the heart of search engine optimization (SEO). It's no secret that Google loves rich, multimedia content. Thus, optimizing your podcasts for SEO is an absolute game-changer.

Let's talk about how to do this effectively.

When optimizing your podcasts for Google, it's vital to focus on two key aspects. Firstly, improve your page speed. Faster pages can captivate and hold your audience's attention. Techniques such as compressing images and embedding videos can help achieve this. Remember, Google values user interaction, and the longer your audience stays on your page, the better.

Secondly, make use of multimedia content. Google's algorithms favor pages that have a variety of content forms, not just text. Engaging infographics, intriguing videos, and high-quality images can boost your SEO ranking significantly.

As a creator, receiving feedback isn’t always easy.
