26 Feb 2023E90 - Lantern Bearers: Love, Wisdom & Comfort of Chronic Illness00:34:02

Welcome back in the PICKLE JAR my friend and ADDISON WARRIOR Lesley James.  Lesley joins us for this episode to dive a bit deeper into the GRIEF of chronic illness.  Sharing her perspective professionally as an end-of-life planner, educator and founder of LAST WISHES CONSULTING.  There are the obvious forms for grief and loss but Lesley opens up about how her journey of illness and grief led her to her core values of LOVE, WISDOM and COMFORT.  These core values led her to her 6 LANTERN BEARERS of chronic illness.  All individuals have 'roles' in our lives and if we recognize our LATERN BEARERS we will find the love and support we need to thrive in life with a chronic illness.  Lesley's invaluable lessons for living with a chronic illness will EMPOWER us to move forward and improve our quality of life.

Education and acknowledgment of the personal grief experienced with chronic illness are one of the first steps in moving forward with your life.

We also discuss RARE DISEASE DAY coming up on February 28th.  We are RARE and AMAZING individuals who have OVERCOME amazing things with our illnesses.  We need to ACKNOWLEDGE and CELEBRATE being RARE...we are truly amazing every day!!

08 Oct 2022E19 - Cortisol - The LIFE Sustaining Hormone00:20:04

One of my biggest challenges with my Addison's Disease is explaining to people the ESSENTIAL ROLE cortisol plays in the body.  It is more than a stress response hormone.  It maintains LIFE is all of the 30 trillion PLUS cells in the human body.

Individuals with Addison's Disease/Adrenal Insufficiency do not produce cortisol and must take replacement hormones for life.

Replacement hormone to SUSTAIN LIFE!

This episode explains the essential role cortisol plays in the human body (as best as I can explain anyways)

02 Mar 2023E94 - HAPPINESS ALERT00:04:40

Welcome into the PICKLE JAR..just a quick message of happiness.  The PICKLE JAR is all about CONNECTING and moving FORWARD with our illness.  I encourage you to listen to the February 26, 2023 episode on MIND PUMP: THE TRUTH ABOUT INFLAMMATION with Dr. Stephen Carbral.

WOW....where does the happiness happen...at about minute 10 when Dr. Cabral mentions the importance of gradually adding stress to the body and how cautious people with ADDISON'S need to be.  What I LOVED and that brought me JOY as you can hear in his tone the understanding he has for people living every day with adrenal insufficiency.  Calling the body living with high levels of inflammation (which I believe we do) WAR ZONES.

Great tips and advice on lessening the inflammation in your body through nutrition, and finding balance through exercise to live healthier lives.  Worth the listen to and I encourage you to take away what works for you now to move forward and improve your quality of life.

16 May 2024E210 - F Word of Addison's Disease00:17:59

This is the MOST frustrating challenge I have with living with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY. It is the F WORD of Addison's Disease. Dealing with a STATIC dose of medication in a world that is forever changing and every moment it takes a bit more cortisol leads to a crippling existence of low cortisol symptoms. Living in an illness lacking the tools to measure my critical LIFE SUSTAINING CORTISOL levels I am left to fend for myself based on physical symptoms. This is my perspective on how it feels living with the F WORD of Addison's Disease.

25 Jan 2024E176 - ROCK STAR - Just Like Her Momma00:13:04

Jill experienced a PROUD Mommy moment and another confirmation about the 'reason' she was diagnosed with Adrenal Insufficiency.

Since diagnosis in March of 2011, Jill has worked HARD at having a CARING, COMPASSIONATE medical team that understands the seriousness of ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY and recognizes that Jill's quality of life directly reflects how well the illness is being managed.

A daughter who is being 'watched' for ADDISON'S DISEASE is off to post-secondary education away from home. She is dealing with being 'sick' away from home and made her MOMMA proud. The first diagnosis was STREP THROAT but through her persistence, she was diagnosed with MONO. It was blood work, follow-ups, and dealing with a medical community when she mentioned "I am being followed for ADDISON'S DISEASE" which clearly communicated their lack of knowledge and concern.

Her MOMMA has set high standards for her care and she did an amazing job managing her health away from home.

Jill sees the quality it has already added to her daughter's life and IF she is diagnosed with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY Jill knows she will be a ROCK STAR JUST LIKE HER MOMMA.

06 Jan 2023E66 - A Little Hug From Her Indiana Jones00:15:16

Dealing with Adrenal Insufficiency is mentally EXHAUSTING...years ago I finally acknowledged my ADDISON'S DISEASE was getting more unmanageable not because of the illness but because of the toxic people in my life.

A long journey of self-love began, eventually leading me to a BEAUTIFUL LIFE.  Yesterday on the 18th year anniversary of my dad passing from adrenal crisis I experienced a BEAUTIFUL moment with a strange that I will always cherish.

Learning to love myself unconditionally (and still working on it) has been one of the best gifts I was given in life.

01 Oct 2023E154 -PART 2 - Rebuilding Her Strength 00:20:10

Deborah reads another one of her TOUCHING WRITING on her journey with Addison's Disease.

Her inspiration came from a quote posted by a friend "EXERCISING IS A BLESSING, NOT A CHORE. I WORKOUT BECAUSE I AM GRATEFUL THAT I PHYSICALLY CAN."

Pre-diagnosis exercise was Deborah's happy place her entire life and the 'cruel' reality of her diagnosis left her feeling 'determined' to reclaim her exercise routine back.

See quickly learns returning to the 'old' normal was "impossible". Her body was weak and depleted. DETEREMINED to return to a life that included daily exercise she took an honest and loving look at herself. She was weak and depleted. She needed to FIRST rebuild her strength and then "START TO EXERCISE AS IF I HADN'T EXERCISED AT ALL!"

Nutrition, patience, self love, and learning to time her workouts she has been able to return to a full workout routine.

Listen to her diagnosis journey on E153 - PART 1 Invisible Illness - Steroids Won't Cure Our Illness

13 Feb 2024E186 - Mommy Power Versus Adrenal Insufficiency00:52:06

There is nothing more amazing than MOMMY SUPERPOWERS!

My most recent guest on THE PICKLE JAR PODCAST used her MOMMY SUPERPOWERS to dominate diagnosis and fast-track her son's prognosis with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

After years of steroid treatments for other ailments, her son was diagnosed with secondary adrenal insufficiency. Catharine has been confronted with many obstacles people face with an ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY diagnosis.

A short conversation delivered the diagnosis with a "Don't Worry" attitude from the doctor, and little advice and direction on what managing this complicated and life-threatening illness means.

MOMMY GOOGLE to the rescue and Catharine realized this was not a "Don't Worry" diagnosis.

Catharine used her resources and advocated for her son to find the answers she needed

And now because of MOMMY SUPER POWER, Will is thriving in life with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

24 Dec 2022E60 - Setting Holiday Boundaries00:11:45

Setting boundaries for me around having Addison's Disease initially was TOUGH...it was HEARTBREAKING...WHY ME????

With time I learned setting boundaries was my way to WIN over ADDISON'S...play the game and I can put more time and energy into the things I really WANT to for the best quality of life.

Minimize low cortisol symptoms.

Minimize risk of adrenal crisis.

Improve my life.

I can be EMPOWERED over my illness.

07 Jun 2023E117 - Add A Little LMNT To Your Life00:11:40

Welcome back into the Pickle Jar...this episode Jill shares a product she uses to help manage her sodium levels with her adrenal insufficiency. Low sodium is dangerous and having an electrolyte drink mix helps Jill maintain her energy and prevent crisis. LMNT was shared with her by a friend with Primary Addison's a few years ago. A powerful little drink package has 1000 mg of sodium without added sugar, is gluten-free and vegan. According to the LMNT website the FDA in the United States and now considering that current sodium recommendations are TOO LOW for optimal health and need to be 2-3 times the current recommendation......hmmmmmmmmmmm interesting.

We all know the low energy feeling following having the flu...that is how Jill feels when her SODIUM is low...the lights are on but no one is home. The is no energy in the tank....the bus won't run! LMNT has been a tool Jill uses to rev up her engines again and one of the resources she used returning to work. Sipping LMNT during her shift keeps her POWERED UP.

Jill would only recommend products that work for HER...maybe they will work for you too. Her messages come from the heart because she is on the journey with you and knows that knowledge matters.

18 Feb 2025E286- ADDISON'S DISEASE MIRACLE00:23:52

Feels like ER TRIP 5,536 of 2025 but last and I got an escorted ride in an ambulance. A miracle occurred when the paramedics arrived and death was once again dodged. 10 hours stay home for rest and salty soup. I am stuck in an ADDISON'S TORNADO and hoping it is over soon.

05 Jul 2023E128 - Belinda WORKS HARD and Overcomes00:32:26

Welcome back into THE PICKLE JAR our inspiring friend Belinda. In November of 2022, Belinda shared her LIFE-LONG JOURNEY to adrenal insufficiency diagnosis at the age of 49. This was a journey that should have been started at the age of 14 when Belinda's health issues led to an ACTH stimulation test that indicated she has primary Addison's Disease. However, this diagnosis was set aside and the doctors choose to focus on Belinda's GI issues and treat her suspecting she had Crohn's Disease. Years of 'treating' a misdiagnosed Crohn's disease with steroids avoid any major adrenal crisis and managed her adrenal insufficiency.

Eventually, that treatment was not enough to sustain life and in 2017 low cortisol levels flagged that there was certainly something more serious going on. After diagnosis, Belinda has a MAJOR ADRENAL CRISIS leading to a minor stroke and making her WORK HARD to regain her quality of life.

That HARD WORK paid off. Belinda recaps her journey with us and updates us on being able to return to work full-time and manage her illnesses. She has learned to PLAY BY HER NEW RULES...and she is winning the game of life.

Boundaries, self-love, communication with her advocates and so much more you will take from this episode. And of course, the LOVE OF A DOG to keep her motivated and moving.

07 Oct 2023E157 - "Beautiful In Its Own Way" - Imogene's Journey 00:35:26

Imogene was diagnosed with PRIMARY ADDISON DISEASE in 2020 at 15 years via ZOOM and on DAY 1 of pandemic lock down.

Her diagnosis journey started a year early with intense muscle cramping. Being a competitive mountain biker her activity and newly diagnosed thyroid issues seemed to be a logical answer.

No solution was helping and with an emotional situation her body was PUSHED TOO FAR. Quick diagnosis from her endocrinologist who listened to her symptoms and asked the right questions.

In the midst of this, she found her faith, found her community, found immense LOVE in her life.

Imogene recognizes this will be continuing learning and adapting with her Addison's Disease and that she will have to make important decisions in her life with her health at her main priority.

She was put on a path she was not expecting but her positive mindset she acknowledges her Addison's Disease is "BEAUTIFUL IN IT'S OWN WAY".

17 Mar 2024E196 - HIGHLIGHT REELS - 13 Years of Addison's Disease00:31:19

This week was my 13th Anniversary of officially being diagnosed with Addison's Disease. 13 years ago I was given an answer to my health issues and a second chance at life. There have been many 'HIGHLIGHTS' over the last 13 years and I tell them honestly from my GAME CHANGER MOMENTS TO the MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS said to me by healthcare professionals (and my responses), my SCARIEST MOMENTS and the BEST MOMENTS. It has been a journey full of the unknown, full of fear, full of hope, and full of strength I never knew I had.

25 Jun 2023E122 - Jill's Death-Aversary00:39:06

Welcome to THE PICKLE JAR PODCAST for episode 122 - Jill's Death-Aversary. Adrenal insufficiency is a serious life-threatening chronic illness and last June Jill experienced an Addison's tailspin that almost put her into cardiac arrest. Listening to this episode will remind you of the scary reality of this illness but also the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and being prepared for emergency situations.

Months of physical exhaustion, leg injury, and then wound infection sent Jill into a tailspin of low potassium and finally her potassium SPIKING to dangerous levels that should have stopped her heart. Luckily she was in her doctor's office when her body decided it no longer had the strength to manage ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY. A MEGA dose in-office of solu-cortef and a FAST & HARD ride to the emergency room to prevent cardiac arrest. Thankfully the megadose of steroids shifted Jill's electrolytes fast enough to prevent a tragic end.

Jill now experiences PTSD from the incident but is grateful for the reminder of the delicate nature of this disease. She is PREPARED for future crises. Instead of seeing the weaknesses in her body she now chooses to see the strength her body has every day to fight ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

20 Feb 2023E89 - PUMP IT UP....INFUSION PUMP FEATURES & FUNCTIONS00:17:25

Welcome back into the PICKLE JAR....Jill dives back into the pickle jar to answer some questions and highlight some key features of using an INFUSION PUMP to manage her Addison's Disease.

Jill has been using a 'diabetic insulin infusion pump for over 6 years.  Instead of insulin, the pump is using SOLU-CORTEF to give Jill a 24-hour CONTINUOUS infusion of hydrocortisone.  Developed by Professor Hindmarsh in the UK, he translated the DIABETIC "INSULIN UNIT" language of the pump into mg for use with ADREnAL INSUFFICIENCY.

Jill uses 100 mg vials of solu-cortef in her infusion pump which means she needs to program it at a 2:1 ratio.  The pump 'speaks' in INSULIN UNITS so for every mg of hydrocortisone she wants to receive she needs to communicate a 2:1 ratio to the pump.  For example, for a 5 mg HC dose, the pump needs to be programmed for 10 IU.

Key features include multiple basal rates (basal meaning the 24-hour pattern of hydrocortisone infusion), bolus function (giving an updose/extra hydrocortisone) and preset programs that can increase/decrease your dose by a desired percentage over the course of the day.  Having better control of HC infusion and dramatically eliminating/minimizing spikes in hydrocortisone and minimizing long-term effects.

The pump can be programmed in 30 min and hourly intervals to best mimic the normal adrenal function and is precise to 0.025 mg of HC.

The infusion pump does not detect low blood cortisol levels.

Jill's Pump is a Medtronic 630 G INFUSION PUMP - waterproof, uses a 3 ml reservoir which Jill fills every 2-3 days with SOLU-CORTEF, site change every 2-3 days, and the pump is "WIRED" to Jill through a small subcutaneous needle.  Takes 5 minutes to change her pump and although she was very apprehensive about having a device "WIRED" to her body, the pump transition for Jill was extremely easy.

14 Nov 2022E47 - Patient Care Plan 00:13:54

One of our favourite pickles is back in the jar with us on NATIONAL PICKLE DAY. Stacey is here to share with us about the PATIENT CARE PLAN she has in place her local hospital.

Following a few scary crises, Stacey reached out to the patient advocate at her local hospital ASKING for change.  And change she got. When Stacey arrives at her local hospital in triage she is electronically flagged for care for her adrenal insufficiency.  Her care is immediate.  It is like a DISNEY FAST PASS in the ER.

Stacey used her voice and made it known she needed better care.  She has been an amazing advocate for herself and an amazing role model for people with adrenal insufficiency.

Episode 29 - Patient Experience Presentation  - Stacey shared her story at a medical convention advocating for all of us with adrenal insufficiency.

Episode 32 - Stacey shares with us the personal side of her diagnosis with Cushing's Disease and her journey to adrenal insufficiency.

Let Stacey inspire YOU to advocate for the change we deserve!

01 Aug 2023E135 - FAMILY REUNION SUCCESS00:15:06

Welcome into THE PICKLE JAR. Jill is excited to share with you that she was able to attend her family reunion on the weekend. Her first one since pre-COVID and it was a success.

Living with a chronic illness attending events can be stressful as you re-live past experiences of anxiety of having to cancel last minute, the exhaustion of preparing for the event, the exhaustion of attending the event and more. It is easy to activate what Jill calls the NEGATIVE CYCYLE of Chronic illness.

She has learned by living and was determined to attend. It was planning physically, emotionally and thinking outside of just her medications. She ate well, rested and listened to her body all week to make sure the odds were in her favour come family reunion day.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Life drains cortisol but Jill decided she is worth the effort to make choices that are ideal for her. Jill decided by choosing herself and taking care of herself...she is choosing her family. Jill chooses to love herself over fearing her illness.

Jill is looking forward to more events, more laughter, more loving and MORE LIVING with Addison's Disease.

01 Apr 2024E201 - Osteoporosis & Adrenal Insufficiency - Jill's Opinion00:13:53

Living with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY without question will come at a cost long term. I am living in a body that can not survive without medication every day. That medication is STEROIDS.We are PREACHED steroids are bad.

We are PREACHED to lower your steroids.

We are PREACHED it is the steroid's fault.

The steroids are saving my life EVERY DAY.

Maybe, just maybe it isn't the steroid's fault.

Maybe, just maybe it is the lack of support and knowledge of medical teams.

Maybe, just maybe it is the lack of technology for people living with adrenal insufficiency.

I am a little fired up in this one after a recent endocrinologist appointment with a doctor saying he cared about my health long term but spent less then 10 minutes with me, quickly viewed blood work and his only advice was "LOWER YOUR STEROIDS AND I WILL SEE YOU IN A YEAR"

That is right...this BIG PICKLE is in need of some pickle love.  She feels like an ADDISON'S ROCKSTAR at the moment but is in fear about another diagnosis.  My mental freight train of fear is running away from me.  Although Google can be your friend it is also your enemy.

21 Oct 2023E161 - Hollie's 100 - Let's Go Home Together00:08:53

With an adrenal insufficiency diagnosis, we are taken away from who we were and often feel like a shell of who we were before diagnosis. At moments, this horrendous disease makes us feel helpless and miles away from who we once were. We feel like we are miles from home.

In E160 Hollie inspired us with her journey HOME...to her 'new' home living with adrenal insufficiency. She started taking small steps and challenging herself with no pressure, and no guilt mentally.

Walking 100 km a month to raise money for brain tumours. Hollies adrenal insufficiency is from 2 pituitary brain surgeries. By loving herself enough to take small steps forward she is making her journey back home.

Be inspired and join us on this journey together back home. Small steps of self-love.

I join you from this episode on my stationary bike...as HOLLIE has inspired me! My goal is 100 km on my stationary bike each month. Slow steady, loving progress.

We do not deserve to exist with adrenal insufficiency, we deserve to LIVE with adrenal insufficiency.

Email me what your HOLLIE 100 will be! OR comment YouTube.

09 Mar 2024E192 - Rebuliding Life with Addison's Disease - Education, Medication & Gratitude 01:07:46

A very special episode in THE PICKLE JAR as Mauve joins us on the year anniversary of when she was admitted to hospital after losing her speech during a Zoom call. Unaware at the time that the changes that had been taking place with her body - extreme fatigue, darkening skin, low blood pressure and salt cravings were a cry for help from her failing body. A few days later at the age 30, Mauve was diagnosed with Addison's Disease.

After a lot of harsh lessons from day one with a medical system that was not equipped to manage her new diagnosis, Mauve took matters into her own hands and started learning everything she could about her illness. Everything from websites to podcasts, to Instagram she became passionate about learning how to live with Addison's disease and rebuild her life.

In the last 365 days, she has conquered surgery, travel, switched endocrinologists, and found a health care team willing to work with her medication to optimize her quality of life and she feels she has returned to 85% of who she is.

An inspiring journey fuelled by education, medication and gratitude.
