Recap of the First Photographer Mindset Retreat in Zion National Park
01:11:32
In this episode we review our time spent away in Zion National Park for the first ever TPM retreat. We go into detail about what we did, what everyone who attended taught us, and what some of the biggest takeaways were.
It's clear based on the response from people who attended and from those who commented on posts seen online, that this will definitely have to be a reoccurring event that Aaron and I organize. We plan to setup retreats in many locations globally and will definitely announce them without any hint. So be on top of episodes! Whether it's with the TPM group, another squad, or something you organize yourself, we encourage everyone to seek out that like minded connection and build a team of people who you click with. It's life changing.
In this episode it was our pleasure to welcome back Stephanie and Rhiannon from the team over at 500px as well as Neil Dankoff, an incredibly experienced and inspirational landscape photographer.

Our Instagram page for the podcast has officially been launched so go ahead and check it out and give @thephotographermindset a follow! Aaron and I have put a lot of thought into what we want to share on there and how we're going to do. It's our goal to constantly bring you the best value in all shapes and forms.
We got a request from a listener to do an episode on how to build effective group dynamics. In this episode, Aaron and I use our group content creation company ST6ix to talk about how we go about delegating tasks, leveraging our strengths and getting to an end goal with the least amount of resistance. Group work and collaborations can be tricky. It takes everyone moving cohesively with the right attitudes in order to succeed as a team.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @rohlfingwildlife with this beautiful shot of a badger! If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see his image. Because we have the Instagram launched, you can now also view all TPM features on our profile under the "TPMartwork" highlight icon. Be sure to check out more of Kyle's work and keep submitting to the hashtag for your chance to have your image featured and talked about on a future episode!
Do Non-Photographers Need to Know The Effort that Went into Your Photos?
00:53:01
Our Instagram page for the podcast has officially been launched so go ahead and check it out and give @thephotographermindset a follow!
Today's episode features a discussion on whether or not it's important for non-photographers or your clients to know the level of effort that went into your images or deliverables. Aaron and I get into some more ideas about the ego/validation, how a photographer in any genre can find a creative angle to make money with their craft, and how you can maximize one opportunity with multiple companies or brands.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @bence_p with this beautiful shot of Arches National Park! Great use of negative space and backlighting while preserving the slight blue of the sky. Defining Your Own Style of Photography and Editing with @britt.bosse
00:59:56
In this episode, Aaron and I are joined by Britt Bosse (@britt.bosse) , an animal and wildlife photographer who also happens to be Aaron's frequent shooting buddy on the east coast of the US. In the first half of this episode we hear about Britt's vegan lifestyle. We found this was an important topic to talk about because it stirs up controversy and we want listeners to be exposed to all kinds of thoughts and opinions. We want to help redesign a world that both supports and challenges beliefs we may have and avoid living in an echo chamber of polarization.
Britt's editing skills and style is unmatched. Aaron and I have yet to find someone who edits their photos anything like Britt does. Check out her Instagram or 500px to see what we're talking about. Notice in the episode how many different sources she is able to name off the cuff of where she was able to learn her editing techniques that she vouches helped form her stylistic approach.
Empathy and Having the Best Relationship With Yourself
00:58:03
Today is a heavy episode. We start off the episode speaking on the tragedy that occurred in Uvalde, Texas where a school shooter murdered 19 innocent children and 2 adults. We share our thoughts surrounding this horrible and all too common tragedy.
We transition the conversation into making room for empathy and reminding everyone to practice self care. We also talk about how everything in life is relationships, and that we need to be constantly learning and teaching the best ways to have healthy interactions.
There is no #TPMartwork for today's episode as it didn't feel right given the heavy content.
How to Find New & Exciting Things to Shoot Locally
00:44:40
In this episode we tackle a question and topic from a listener of the show regarding how get excited and motivated to get out and shoot subjects in your local that may not be as thrilling as places like Yellowstone or Iceland. We dive into the importance of creating a photograph rather than simply using a gorgeous scene as a crutch. Lastly, we talk about the amount of genres of photography available to try and experiment with in places where location doesn't hinder your ability to capture content.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @likelytowander with her awesome shot of a red Summer Tanager chowing on a dragonfly! This is a photo where her patience allowed her to catch the animal performing an interesting act. The animal's behaviour makes the photo, not the subject itself. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see her image. Be sure to check out more of her work and keep submitting to the hashtag for your chance to have your image featured and talked about on a future episode!
After ten days away in Spain I'm back with Aaron to catch up, talk about a bit of my trip and see what Aaron has been up to.

Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @johnnardacci with this beautiful "flowy" waterfall shot in Mass, USA! Getting the greens right in a photo is tricky and John nailed it. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see his image. Because we have the Instagram launched, you can now also view all TPM features on our profile under the "TPMartwork" highlight icon. Be sure to check out more of John's work and keep submitting to the hashtag for your chance to have your image featured and talked about on a future episode!
Exploding into the Wildlife Photography Scene with @tiffanytaxis
00:49:54
In this episode, Aaron and I are joined by Tiffany Taxis (@tiffanytaxis) , a wildlife photographer and another Olympus shooter living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Tiffany describes how her first art fair went and the criteria that went into selecting which pieces of artwork to exhibit. We also talk about putting yourself out there and establishing connections within the local photography community when you find yourself in a new part of the country.
Aaron and I both agree that Tiffany's wildlife photography is one of the most explosive in quality that we've ever seen. If you scroll back on her instagram grid, one minute she has a typical looking grid, the next polar bears, bobcats, and coyotes are staring you in the face with a tremendous and thoughtful burst of artistic flare. We both admire her work ethic and talent.
Intermittent Fasting, What Kids Can Teach Us, & Does Social Media Make Reality Less Impressive?
01:05:28
Today Aaron and I talk about intermittent fasting and the wellness ideas behind it. We talk about the dangers of filters and the quest for perfection in images, and if eventually social media will make reality unimpressive. Lastly, we return to the idea that kids can teach us so much. Their brains turn complex thoughts into simple expression and that's something we can re-apply as adults.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @jpegsbyjerry with this beautiful shot of mountains in Sedona! We found his photo to have great colour balance and a really tasteful amount of contrast. Congrats Jerry! We hear the story of how Mike went from sneaking a camera into a venue and snapping some photos of one of his favourite bands, to being one of their main photographers capturing their Radio City Music Hall performance in under one year. This story is a huge testament to fighting through "no's", generating opportunities for yourself, meticulously planning, and digging down deep to make sure you execute.
An Interview with Instagram, Preemptive Measures with Clients, & The Importance of People Skills
00:57:49
Today Aaron and I run a mock interview with Instagram from the perspective of a new photographer looking to join the platform amongst a fury of complaints and woes. We get into the importance of having a discussion with your client before a shoot and encouraging them to share directly with you what it is they're hoping to receive as deliverables. Lastly, we revisit the importance of developing your people skills. Businesses and brands like to hire individuals that are easy to work with, not necessarily those who are the most skilled. We define what "easy to work with" actually means.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @spencerlee808 with his beautiful shot of a turtle softly floating through the clear blue water off the coast of Hawaii! YWe love the use of negative space and those tasty sun rays poking through the top of the image. Congrats Spencer! We also talk about how to get to a place where we're constantly thinking about how we can add value as opposed to what there is to gain from a situation. Lastly, among other things, we discuss what real life is compared to digital life and how at some point digital life will become integrated into reality.

In this episode Aaron and I talk about the guilt potentially associated with wanting something from someone and how "manipulation" has turned into a word that is possibly loaded and negatively biased. Is socially engineering or manipulating an interaction to garner you business wrong? We talk about how having your self interests at heart is required in order for you to successfully pitch and generate opportunity for yourself. In other words, you can't want more for yourself and feel bad aggressively going after it. We really dig into what a symbiotic client-photographer relationship should look like and how to portray that you have your clients best interest at heart right away in any pitch.

Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @decoen.nature with his shot of an Osyter Catcher giving itself a little scratch on the beach. I've never seen a photograph of one up close before. Composite Photography, WEB3, & Photo Transparency with @angefuchs
00:49:21

We talk about her start-to-finish process when creating composites images, digital art vs. photography, and the importance of transparency when publishing your composites as such. We dig into WEB3 and cryptocurrencies, and more so how photography can be a vessel to understanding how tokenized assets and blockchain technology works regardless of whether or not you sell a single NFT.

Trading Your 9-5, Posting Daily Content, Gen Z, & Youtube University with @justin.choquette
01:13:46
In this episode we're joined by Canadian photographer Justin Choquette (@justin.choquette) who talks about the process and strategic planning that went into trading his 9-5 job as an electrician for being a full time content creator. We get into when that perfect moment to make the transition or "leap of faith" is. More specifically, what boxes should you have ticked off and what criteria allow for that move to make the most sense. We talk about how the landscape of quality education is changing with the new age of instant access to information. More and more of the world's most innovative and successful people are getting an amazing education entirely for free on a smartphone online. Gut Feelings, Knowing What You Don't Know, & Having Fun Struggling
00:57:58
Aaron is back after I went solo last week. We like to do at least an episode a month where Aaron and I get some one-on-one time to discuss thoughts we've been having and concepts we've been mulling over to improve our photography practice and overall life. Aaron is interested in starting a photo-book venture so we talk about that and use it as a vehicle to get into deeper discussion about when to trust and not trust our gut feeling. We emphasize the importance of practicing humility and not pretending to have an understanding of everything and anything. "Knowing What You Don't Know" is a great way to seek expert advice and collect an array of input and data before making decisions. We revisit the importance of having fun grinding and struggling along our journey to get to where we want to. Without the struggle, there would be no progress, and no fulfillment. We try to constantly remind ourselves and listeners of this fact of life.

Good Shots Out of Camera, Frontend & Backend of Photography, & Receiving Advice
00:57:01
In this episode we take a question from a listener that focuses on the concept of having good shots out of the back of our camera and how much we should really be relying on software to save or make the final image pop. We discuss the ratio of frontend vs. backend work of a photographer and where we think a healthy and realistic balance is. Frontend being filming, photographing, editing, etc. and backend being, creating pitch decks, emailing, networking, etc. We also discuss common emotional responses when both giving and receiving advice and how this line of communication can be faulty.

In this episode, Aaron and I follow up with last week's episode talking about areas we'd like to double down on and grow stronger in moving forward. To be clear, these aren't resolutions. These are things we've started on recently and are working on now, but that we'd like to hone in on as 2023 progresses. The best time to start anything is now!

Objectively Viewing Ourselves, Prioritizing, Dealing with Haters, & Monetizing with @lizziepeirce
01:00:21
We're joined in this episode by photographer, videographer, and world traveller Lizzie Peirce (@lizziepeirce). We talk about the importance of viewing ourselves from an objective standpoint rather than a subjective one. Without a doubt this a very difficult thing to do. The more we can work towards seeing ourselves more objectively, and the more people we surround ourselves with that will help us see ourselves that way, the better we will become. Lizzie is a very organized, rationale, and logical person. We get to hear her way of thinking in regard to how she approaches tasks and how she effectively prioritizes to get the mission accomplished. We touch on how to properly deal with haters. One of the best methods talked about in this episode is to remove their power and to simply continue to show up. Lastly, we discuss that your wholesome "why" doesn't disappear when you figure out how to monetize your business. It only offers you more time and resources to provide more value for your audience, followers, or clients.

Social Media is a Trap?, Classic vs. Conceptual Shots, & Shooting Erupting Volcanos with @thrainnko
01:14:28
We're joined in this episode by Icelandic photographer Thrainn Kolbeinsson (@thrainnko). He has performed work for Iceland Air, Nissan, and North by 66. In this episode we talk about the spectrum of capturing classic shots vs conceptual or different shots. Thrainn is a recently new dad and we discuss ways to better carve out your time so that photography doesn't fall by the wayside during times where you may have major responsibilities. We eliminate the myth that Instagram performance is the bar to measure your success as a photographer. Lastly, we hear about the volcanic eruption in Iceland and how Thrainn went about documenting that event.

Signs You Need Rest, You've Been Lying to Yourself, & How to Maximize Fulfillment
01:12:10
In this episode, Aaron and I talk about the indicators we experience that let us know our body's and minds are overworked and need rest. We talk about the the voice inside your head that constantly lies to you, as proven when you accomplish something it said you would never be able to. Furthermore, we discuss the lightbulb moment of discovery when you realize such trickery and ask "what else has this voice conned me into believing I couldn't do?" Finally, we hammer home the concept and equation of "progress = fulfillment" and what that truly means.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @ethan_hoggard_photography with his stunning shot of a Hen Harrier (or Northern Harrier?) in flight. Turning Nerves Into Excitement, Letting Go of "Shoulds", & Learning How to Learn with @melissafindley
01:14:31
We're joined in this episode by PNW photographer Melissa Findley (@melissafindley). Melissa has over a decade of experience photographing landscapes, people, nature, and wildlife. She has worked with well-known and reputable brands in the industry including Canon, Adorama, Adobe and Nat Geo. Melissa also has and incredible portfolio and expertise in working with tourism and hospitality boards such as Visit Saudi Arabia, the Banff Fairmont Springs, Switzerland Tourism and Tourism Australia. Her artistic way of storytelling through photo carousels and video format is engaging, authentic and pure, and something we can all look towards for inspiration.
Among many other topics, this episode focuses on the benefits of channeling our anxious feelings and nerves into excitement so that we begin to say "yes" to more scary opportunity. We talk about ditching your ideas of the way things "should go", or what you "should do", so that we don't put unrealistic expectations on outcomes or put our vision in a box. Lastly, we talk about the art form of learning how to best learn. It may seem like a confusing topic, but have you ever asked yourself what the most efficient way for you to learn is?

Falling and Getting Back Up, Reinventing Your Identity & Unleashing Your Inner Creativity with @deepsnap
01:13:08
We're joined in this episode by photographer Aaron King (@deepsnap). Aaron was formerly a professional football snapper until a series of bad concussions forced him to retire from sport for the sake of his health. After that he built a multi million dollar company from scratch only to have the pandemic wipe out his business. One of the major themes in this episode and through Aaron's story is resilience, and how to get back up again when life punches you in the mouth. The way Aaron discovered his love for photography and videography and how he came to realize his creative potential is inspiring. As well it seems Aaron has a new vision of what he wants out of life and has begun to realize what is truly important to him after being behind the lens and travelling through many parts of America with his cherished truck.

01:05:50
We're joined in this episode by Canadian photographer Dusty Cressey (@dusty.cressey). Dusty creates authentic imagery for brands and more specifically hospitality and tourism organizations. Dusty has worked with Travel Alberta, Baffin, and Subaru among others. In this episode we talk about how you can be massively successful as both a part-time or full-time creator. We discuss avoiding glorifying being a "full time content creator" and avoiding undermining generating income in addition to your other job. Both can be incredibly rewarding and fruitful based on who you are as an individual. We also get into how to differentiate yourself amongst the hundreds of other photographers in an authentic way when introducing and pitching your ideas and shoots to new clients.

Getting Paid Fairly & Licensing Your Images with Adam Coppola
01:17:12
Today's episode features Adam Coppola (@coppolaphotography) a professional commercial photographer from Connecticut. Aaron has referenced Adam a lot in previous episodes, especially the fact that he is a full blown professional with little focus or attention paid to social media. We highlight this fact so that listeners can zoom out and realize that social media is a tool and not the photography industry as a whole.
In this episode Adam shares how to price yourself so that you get paid fairly for your work and so that you avoid getting taken advantage of. We also explore licensing photos as opposed to only charging for the amount of time it took you to do the work. We discuss what you charge can be a sliding scale based on what your images will be used for and how much advertising dollars will be put behind pushing them.

Switching from Nikon to Sony, Spurring on Creativity, & Working Beyond Talent
01:02:04
Today's episode is a big one! Aaron switched over from Nikon to Sony so now there's one less thing to tease him about (sorry Nikon shooters, we still love you!) So far he has nothing but good things to say about his new camera body. He gets into why he made the switch and his first impressions. We also get how forcing yourself to post everyday or every weekday is a great way to force yourself to spur on creativity and work that muscle. If social media is a burden to you it's also a great challenge to push through something that isn't necessarily fun, but that will potentially harbour growth results. Lastly we get into the concept of what taking photography beyond your talent really looks like.

How to Film Time-Lapses, AI “Photography”, & Is Instagram Killing Your Creativity? with @sorin.dean
00:54:02
Today's episode features a discussion with Seattle urban and street photographer Sorin Dean (@sorin.dean). We chat about the future of AI and photography and whether its quick advancement poses a threat to our livelihood as photographers. We talk about how vertical photographs are becoming endemic and how we need to get back to shooting landscape orientation if it serves our photo or scene better. Sorin discusses how he goes about filming his catchy time-lapses. Lastly, we discuss how important it is to serve your own tastes rather than slaving away to Instagram's algorithm. We talk about how being a servant to the app can lead to the death of creativity.

Imposter Syndrome vs. Performance Anxiety, How to Slow Down, & Visual Storytelling with @small_soy
00:52:44
In today's episode we're joined by Rachel Bradley (@small_soy) and Australian photographer, or as we like to call her in this episode, a "visual author". Rachel seemingly can shoot any genre and create scenes that tell a descriptive story. Boudoir, products, engagements, landscapes, Rachel has a gift in her ability to notice moments worth capturing and publishes them in an one-of-a-kind artistic form.
In this episode we talk about the difference between imposter syndrome, which can be debilitating, and performance anxiety which can be enhancing. We talk about ways we can get ourselves to slow down on set or in the field so that we're honing in on what's important to photograph rather than clicking the shutter at everything and anything like a mad (wo)man.
Most of the theme of today's episode focuses on how we can best become visual storytellers with our images. Rather than offer easy low hanging fruit suggestions, we try really hard to discuss the nuances of what really goes into the details of getting that visual story across.

01:18:07

A potential Tik Tok ban
The pros & cons of diverse and niche portfolios

In today's podcast episode, we delved into Seth's experience of posting on Instagram once a day for 30 days and explored both the good and the bad. We also specifically focused the beginning of the episode on how some photographers may be losing interest in their craft due to an over-reliance on social media growth. Our theory is as the landscape of social media becomes increasingly challenging to navigate, photographers who have mentally invested solely in building their online presence are finding themselves at a loss and lacking a sense of purpose with their cameras if they don't want to bend to algorithm changes. We discussed the importance of diversifying one's interests and pursuits beyond social media to maintain genuine passion and fulfillment in photography.

The first topic tackled in this episode is a common struggle among photographers—what to do when a client or potential client suddenly goes silent or ghosts you. We delve into practical advice and share personal experiences to help you navigate these tricky situations. Thanks for the question Karolina!
Next up, we explore an intriguing question: How do you define yourself as a photographer when you shoot across multiple genres? And how can we monetize as a jack-of-all-trades? We dive deep into the nuances of finding your identity as a versatile photographer and offer opinions on how to leverage your diverse range of skills and interests to your advantage. Thanks for the question Rachel!
