The Phillies only need to win one more game to make the postseason. They only need to win two more games to win the NL East. It’s going to happen. But the Phillies fell into a first-place tie with the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, following Thursday night’s loss to the Mets at Citi Field. Taijuan Walker allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. He is 3-7 with a 6.91 ERA, which is the fifth-highest ERA for any Phillies pitcher since 1901 (minimum 80 innings pitched). The Phillies are 4-11 when Walker starts. It isn’t just Walker, however. The Phillies’ No. 5 starter has been a problem since Spencer Turnbull got hurt in June. The Phillies’ No. 5 starters have a combined 14.14 ERA in their last eight starts. They are 2-6 in those games. Those losses could be the difference between having home-field advantage through the NLCS and playing Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium, if both teams get that far. All-Star lefty Matt Strahm is experiencing a left shoulder issue, which could force him to open the season in the injured list. Strahm had an MRI exam, which revealed no structural damage, but an impingement has caused inflammation. He is not going to throw until Thursday at the earliest. In case you missed it, Alec Bohm and Brandon Marsh have been going through a terrible start to the 2025 season. But both had important at-bats in Tuesday night’s 6-4 victory over the Giants. Marsh’s sacrifice fly in the second inning gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Bohm’s base hit in the sixth inning gave the Phillies the lead. Afterward, Harper had some philosophical thoughts about players struggling in the big leagues: “I just want [Bohm] to enjoy the game. Life could be a lot harder. Life can be a lot tougher. We get to play this beautiful game every day. I was standing in the on-deck circle in the third inning and I was thinking about it, 'Man, it’s a great game we get to play.' Phillies ace Zack Wheeler had another start that further established himself as one of the best postseason pitchers in baseball history, but it’s difficult to win when the offense can’t string together a couple hits in a row. That’s exactly what happened in the Phillies’ 6-2 loss to the Mets in Game 1 of the 2024 National League Division Series at Citizens Bank Park. Wheeler allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings, but the Phillies managed just one hit between Kyle Schwarber’s leadoff homer and the eighth inning. And by that time the Phillies two most trusted relievers (Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm) turned a 1-0 lead into a 5-1 deficit. Ruben, Jim and Todd break down a thoroughly disappointing Game 1, and discuss what needs to happen to even the series in Game 2. The Phillies’ season of enormous World Series-or-bust expectations ended on Wednesday night in New York with a 4-1 loss to the Mets in Game 4 of the NL Division Series. “Just feel like you failed,” Trea Turner said. “I think we had a fun season, we made some good memories and whatnot, but when it comes to winning a World Series, it feels like kind of a failure.” It was a crushing loss, but perhaps not a surprising one. The Phillies were baseball’s best team through early June, but played .500 the rest of the way. Something needs to be done to get this team over the hump. But what? On Sunday morning, news broke that the Phils traded prospects Staryln Caba and Emaarion Boyd to Miami for left-hander Jesús Luzardo and minor league catcher Paul McIntosh. Everybody is swinging and missing too much as teams continue to throw them breaking balls and offspeed pitches outside the strike zone. Is there a fix for this? The Phillies haven’t clinched anything yet, but after winning three of four against the Braves this weekend at Citizens Bank Park they are primed to win their first NL East title since 2011. Nick Castellanos led the way with clutch hitting, including a pair of 0-2 hits in Sunday night’s 3-2 victory in 11 innings. Castellanos hit a game-tying double in the sixth inning and a walk-off single in the 11th. But it wasn’t just Castellanos this weekend against the Braves. The Phillies had such a good opportunity to clinch the NL East at some point on their just complete seven-game road trip through Milwaukee and New York. They didn’t. As concerning as that might, it’s also concerning that the Phillies struck out 81 times on the road trip, four shy of their most strikeouts in a seven-game span in franchise history. It’s not that the Phillies couldn’t have come back to win the NLDS had they lost Game 2 on Sunday night. It’s that the odds would have been heavily against them. But after they continued to chase pitches out of the strike zone at an alarming rate through five innings in Game 2, Bryce Harper settled everybody’s nerves when he crushed a two-run homer into the batter’s eye in center field to cut the Mets’ lead to 3-2. Nick Castellanos, who got booed and Bronx cheered in the fourth, followed with a game-tying solo homer. Harper and Castellanos continued from there. They led the Phillies to a dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory, which Castellanos ended with a single to left. Bryson Stott came through with a huge hit. Cristopher Sánchez pitched well. We also talk about Rob Thomson’s decision to bench Alec Bohm in Game 2, and if Edmundo Sosa might start at second base against a tough lefty in Game 3. The Phillies had a team meeting last week before a game against the Marlins. They are 4-1 since. Is the worst finally behind them? The Phillies will find out this week, when they open a six-game road trip in Atlanta. There were plenty of good signs from the Phillies, including big weeks from Trea Turner and the rotation. But the weekend could have been better. Following fun Alumni Weekend celebrations, including the late great David Montgomery being inducted onto the Wall of Fame, the Phillies lost Sunday’s series finale against the Nationals. The Phillies had the tying run at the plate with no outs in the ninth, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson declined to use either Bryce Harper or J.T. Realmuto. Cal Stevenson grounded into a double play and Garrett Stubbs grounded out to end the game. Ruben, Jim and Todd have some thoughts on it.
