10 Nov 201514 –Technique Change00:29:07

Making adjustments to a heavily practiced, well established skill can be one of the most difficult tasks required of an experienced athlete. Although there can be several situations in sport for which this is required (e.g., rule or/and equipment changes, advancement to a higher level of play), there are a dearth of empirical studies that have examined the processes underlying successful technique change. In this episode, I explore what is involved in: opening an athlete’s performance black box to get the new technique in place and then hiding the key so that it is resistant to the effects of pressure.

Research confessions: Why aren’t practitioners reading our papers?

29 Sep 201511 –Performing & Choking Under Pressure00:22:43

We have all seen it.  A great athlete has a chance to win a championship.  All that is required for them to do something they have done hundreds of times before…sink a 3 foot putt, make a free throw, kick a 20 year field goal. And they miss!  In this episode I explore the fascinating topic of choking under pressure. Why do some athletes excel in these situations while others fail?  What causes choking and want can an athlete do to prevent it?

05 Jan 201618 – Performance Feedback00:28:20

With the ever increasing availability of tracking and monitoring technology it is becoming easier and easier for an athlete to get feedback about their results and performance.  But is the too much of a good thing?  How does feedback influence the acquisition and performance of sports skills?  Which type of feedback should be used and how often? Is providing biofeedback (e.g., heart rate, brain activity) effective?  Can sounds and vibrations be used to shape movements?

18 Aug 20158- How Do We Become an Expert? Intro to Skill Acquisition00:20:42

Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden once said: “The importance of repetition until automaticity cannot be overstated”. Reaching a stage where some skills can be performed “automatically” is thought to be one of the main goals of sports training and one of the defining characteristics of being an expert.  But what exactly does it mean for a sports skill to be “automatic” and how exactly is this desired state achieved through training? In this episode, I introduce the topic of skill acquisition be exploring traditional theories of how an athlete progresses from a novice to an expert.

Research confessions: Does research always happen like we say it does in journal articles?
