13 Sep 2022 | 102. Prostate Enlargement vs Prostate Cancer Explained; with Dr Andrew Tan | 00:45:00 | |
For the 2nd week of Prostate Cancer month, we have invited Dr Andrew Tan from Perth Urology Clinic to be our guest.
Dr. Andrew will discuss the difference between Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) (enlargement) and Prostate Cancer. This is something many people get confused about. Something that we hear often is a man saying they were shocked to find out they had prostate cancer because they had no symptoms and likewise men present concern that they may have Prostate Cancer because the urination pattern has changed.
To help me with this interrogation (as Dr Andrew calls it ;)) Nurse Practitioner Kendall from Restorative Sexual Health Clinic will join me. Kendall has many years experience working as a urology nurse so is equipped to ask the tricky questions.
Topics of discussion will include:
We even talked about Bananas and the Prostate! If you're one of those who keeps Googling 'bananas and prostate', this week's episode might give you a better answer. Dr. Andrew also reiterates the importance of getting checked as early as possible, why having no symptoms is not reassuring, and that any food that's good for the heart is also good for your prostate. Have a great time listening to our week's info-packed episode. And if you have the time, make sure to jot down some notes and leave a review so we can help more people just like you. ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

08 Jun 2021 | 37. Cyberknife® Precise Robotic Radiosurgery for Prostate Cancer with “Peter Podias” | 00:46:41 | |
Episode 37 will be about Cyberknife.
To start, Cyberknife® is defined as per below:
CyberKnife® System uses state-of-the-art robotic technology combined with real-time image guidance to deliver precisely-targeted radiation to cancerous and non-cancerous lesions almost anywhere in the body. Real-time tumour tracking enables the delivery of high doses of radiation with sub-millimetre accuracy, sparing surrounding healthy tissue and organs without the need for invasive immobilisation devices.
To know more about this technology, we have invited Peter Podias - the Director of Operations of 5D Clinics, the only private Cyberknife® clinic in Australia.
Peter will discuss how Cyberknife® works, what it does, what diseases it can help, the process, how much it costs, what are its short term and long term effects, and a lot more questions you might also want to know the answers to.
If you’re the one who's been looking for a few different options, this episode is surely for you.
This is also for you if you’re a sci-fi movie fan because as Melissa says, Cyberknife® is like something that came out from the movies.
It’s actually for everyone too who would love to know how much Science has evolved in terms of radiation therapy.
Have a listen at the link below. And don’t forget to share this episode with anyone who you feel can benefit from it. Thank you. ;)

Today, we speak with Peter Pan. Peter was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at the age of 56, thanks to his GP noticing a slight increase in his PSA. Given his family history of Prostate Cancer, they did further investigations immediately. The news was devastating and a bit shattering. However, Peter got himself ready for treatment and surgery. This part is what he found the most frustrating - deciding the next steps. Peter considers himself lucky throughout the process. Post-op, his continence was perfect according to Dr Jo. He also had some return of erectile function in just a few months. Peter’s story today will discuss how he decided which treatment was best for him. You can consider this episode an A-Z of one mans journey, which may assist you in yours. It's also a reminder of why it is important to get yourself tested as early as possible. This week we have had a trip down memory lane in more ways than one, the first 2 mins has terrible sound…. If you have been listening since the beginning you will remember the days when the sound was terrible and you had to keep changing the volume to hear! For this episode, we will take you down memory lane, with Andy.
Andy will be talking about the love of his life, the pain he has had to endure and still feels to this day, the pain of panic, and the rush of bikes. So for the blokes who know the sweet taste of adrenaline when riding bikes, you will enjoy this!
Be ready to listen, to be sad, to laugh, to be jealous (because he could just have the best job in the world!) and get some life lessons. Because yes, no matter how good your continence is, you still have to continue doing your pelvic floor exercises… or else, get ready to be dripp-y.
Have a listen and we hope the lessons from Andy’s journey will give inspiration, joy, and the empowerment to live and embrace life - every minute of it.
Andy wouldn’t change it for quids!
Enjoy!

30 Mar 2021 | 27. ‘’Paul’’- Prostate Cancer Conqueror & Passionate Swimmer with a Sling! | 00:33:32 | |
Meet Paul. Paul is a 75 year old swimmer and a survivor of Prostate Cancer. Instead of opting for the usual prostatectomy, he opted for Robotic Surgery. You see, Paul is an avid swimmer and having the usual operation to remove his prostate was not ideal – so after discussion and great decisiveness, he opted for the Robotic surgery. When we asked Paul about the pain after the surgery, he said ‘Very, very little’. The pain was very little that he was able to go back to swimming activities even just after 4 weeks. He just had to go back to the swimming pool as soon as possible (what an amazing drive!). However, the major problem that Paul encountered was that he was leaking heavily – leaking at almost a litre and a half a day. He was using almost 7 pads per day. Even disposing the pads was quite an issue. He had to actually duck into women’s toilets to dispose of them! Here’s an episode where we discussed the initiative of providing Bins for Blokes (Episode 10) >> And when he swims, he has to use tissue papers to hide the leakage. (Sorry, we forgot to ask what brand of tissue he used!) Then he met with Dr. Jo who gave him a lot of confidence to handle the incontinence. To also help with the leakage, he opted for the Advanced Sling Operation. You can actually find out more about this in Episode 19 where Mr. Positive Penis talked about it. Please click here to listen to Episode 19 >>The operation helped him address the leakage but had to endure almost 6 weeks of pain from the operation site. Here are some amazing takeaways from this episode:
And lastly, Know that you can do whatever you like, but it’s gonna come from within and it should be something that you really like. Passion is the key to a long happy life.

29 Oct 2024 | 182: World meeting on sexual medicine Rio De Janeiro 2025 – what’s new and what did we learn. | 00:38:18 | |
Recently Kate and I attended this conference in Brazil. It was 4 days jam packed with information in the sexual health field. People from all over the world attended and from many different professions. Many urologists, sexologists, a few nurse practitioners, occupational therapists and many more. I have attended this conference in previous years and it is always exciting to update skills and think about what we can incorporate into our care to assist more people in their intimate lives and cancer journeys. Today we are going to discuss the big takeaways we got from this years conference. In future episodes I will discuss some of these topics in more detail but for today is an overview. I chose to attend mainly presentations around prostate cancer rehabilitation, peyronies disease and relationship issues. Kate attended lots of sessions on women’s health, wellbeing and sexuality. My top takeaway was that the research shows ‘less positive outcomes for penile rehabilitation when started greater than 6 months following prostate cancer surgery’ so it is my mission this year to get men to come in earlier and not wait to start rehab. Kates big takeaway is that Ph is not just important in pool water, it is also very important in vagina health. Listen here to find out more about: Testosterone(having low T may actually increase risk of developing prostate cancer), peyronies, how erectile function drugs are associated with decreasing risk of MACE (major adverse cardiac events), of the 237 reasons people cited for having sex what was the number 1 reason, what is Bocox and many more exciting tit bits. Following the conference Kate and I also went on a trip for a few days up the Amazon and did lots exciting things including piranha fishing so we tell you the highlights of this too and recommend you put this on your bucket list. If you would like to read the paper that discusses testosterone and prostate cancer this, is it: Prostate safety events during testosterone replacement therapy in men with hypogonadism: A randomised clinical trial. 15 Feb 2023 | 123. 300-400 Times Penile Injections | 00:20:10 | |
Today, you will be meeting Paul. A 71-year-old gentleman and a penile injection user for more than 4 years! A very satisfied one at that. 😉 At 51, Paul started to do routine blood tests to monitor his sugar and PSA levels. Fourteen years after, at 65 years old and a few fingers up the bum, Paul was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. A year after his surgery, his sexual function did not improve. As a man, he thought “I’ll give it time” thinking it will sort out by itself. But it never did! So, he went back to his urologist to seek help. Pretreatment, he had an active sex life and to give it up altogether without doing anything else, was not Paul’s idea of a good solution. He met Melissa and that’s when things started getting hard again. Pun intended. Paul had to make a huge change in his mindset to seek help, but it was worth it. Melissa introduced him to penile injections and he has been using them ever since. His numbers? 300-400 times. How did he get so proficient? Stickability! He followed the instructions and switched injection sites. Paul agrees that using injections affects spontaneity, but like vacations, it is fun to plan the sexy times with your partner. He says that it stings a little but you can treat it as THE fine line between pleasure and pain! Listen to Paul’s story and hopefully, you also get to enjoy 300-400 times. 😉 All resources relating to penile injections are in the show notes below: https://thepenisproject.org/123-300-400-times-penile-injections/ ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

21 Mar 2023 | 128. Pills, Pumps, P Injections Easily Explained, Steve’s Journey Know how these 3 works | 00:14:30 | |
For today’s episode, we’ll hear back from Steve - the poet who didn’t know it. Our previous episode with Steve was about his poems, now, we brought him back to hear about what he did to his penis post-op. Did he use pills? Pumps? Or penile injections? Well, he used all three! All powered by his guts and his desire to recover. You see, Steve, isn’t a patient of Melissa nor Dr Jo’s but through his hard work, belief, and courage to do it - he used all of those three - pills, pumps, and p injections. He first used the pills, then the pumps (still using it!) and the p injections. Steve asked Melissa whether it’s ok to use pumps even if his function is 95% back. Yes, is what Melissa answered! Why? Listen to Melissa as she explains it. Melissa will reiterate how important these three things are in your recovery or rehab. So, if you’ve been wondering how these three things work together - Melissa has the answers! What can the pills do to the penis? Why do you need to keep using the pump to exercise it? Why use injections?? If you want brief, easy to understand answers - listen to the podcast now through the button below. And we suggest that you bookmark this episode - to remind you that these things are all based on science, not movies. ;) Enjoy listening! ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

15 Dec 2020 | 14. ‘’Glen”: Getting diagnosed with Testicular Cancer aged 32 | 00:36:45 | |
Welcome to episode 14 of The Penis Project Podcast.
Today, we speak with Glenn.
Glenn was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer at the age of 32. That was three years ago. And fortunately, according to him, his life is now back to normal.
Glenn talks about his experience from the time symptoms appeared to that time when he decided to have his check-up (6 months after experiencing signs and symptoms), to eventually going through the operation, and to changing his perspective on life after everything that happened.
Glenn’s advice to anyone experiencing some symptoms?
‘There’s nothing to be ashamed of, go see the doctor’. ;)
------ Testicular Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in young men between 18-35, affecting 1-2% of the population. To help you with checking your nuts, here is a very helpful resource from Movember:

08 Mar 2023 | 126. Steve, The Poet Who Didn’t Know It | 00:58:35 | |
Today, we talk with Steve, the poet who didn’t know it. Steve is one of our listeners who volunteered to be one of our guests. He found the podcast a very helpful resource for his recovery. From prostate cancer. Like some of you who listen to the podcast, Steve was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at 56 years old. He also had a family history, given that his father and brother had the same diagnosis. Post-op, Steve lacked information. So, he turned to Google and looked for support groups. There, he found Victoria, Tess, and then us. With everything that happened to him, he learned how important it is to support others going through this journey. This was the reason why he became a staple in Facebook support groups… and along the way, poetry and words found him. He used words to share his journey, to express his thoughts, to give life to what he was going through, and ultimately, to inspire others. As you listen to this episode, you will transcend to a different kind of world - a world of words - where we believe a lot of you will feel as if the words are speaking to you. It’s magnificent how we get to see that words can heal us - whether that’s through poetry or through frankness and honesty. Enjoy listening and watch out for some poem reading from Melissa a in our next episodes! ;) Jo has arranged for poetry reading in Melbourne in March (from the man himself). If you are interested in attending, please see below: Thank you, Steve, for sharing your story and the things you wrote to help others cope. Please see below helpful resources:

02 Nov 2021 | 58. Dr “Ryan Stafford”- Pioneer in Men’s Health Research of Pelvic floor Muscle Function | 01:01:56 | |
Dr Ryan Stafford (PhD) , Adjunct Research Fellow at University of Western Australia, University of Queensland
Dr Ryan Stafford is passionate research scientist, with a background in Exercise Physiology and collaborates with global leading researchers in men’s health. Specifically, Ryan pioneered real-time ultrasound (RTUS) imaging in the assessment of male pelvic floor function in men undergoing surgery for prostate cancer, and hence changed the way the physiotherapists teach patients how to perform PFM training correctly to minimise urinary incontinence.
Today, Ryan continues to lead research at the University of Queensland (UQ) and has recently joined forces with Dr Jo (Milios) at The University of Western Australia (UWA) investigating male patients undergoing radiation therapies for prostate cancer and also at male pelvic pain patients. A new focus is on erectile dysfunction and this includes males with any form of PFM dysfunction with doppler studies of penile blood flow being examined. Also sometimes these muscles can be tight, known as ‘hypertonicity’’ and other times they can be weak, known as ‘hypotonicity’’. So for some men strength training is not the best program , but relaxation or PFM ‘down-training’’ is the key.
Please join Dr Jo as she brings up the great, the humble Dr Ryan Stafford. From Canada to you!
Ps. In recent COVID times, research grants are tougher to succeed, with less $$$ available in the total health purse, so currently Dr JO & Ryan are doing this research in a voluntary fashion. Although he wouldn’t ask for it, philanthropic donations to Ryan can always be made by contacting him directly at r.stafford@uq.edu.au... PROST!
Grants (2018–2021) NHMRC Project Grant (ongoing ) (2016–2020) Physiotherapy Research Fellowships (completed)

24 Jun 2022 | 90. Bionic Brian’s Prostate Cancer Journey | 00:40:07 | |
For today’s episode, we talk with Bionic Brian. The things you will be hearing from Brian will be quite varied but also very familiar. His story is like a full recipe. Why? Because he has utilised multiple solutions (ingredients) to come up with the greatest result - expelling all cancer from his body. Brian was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 69. He had his non-nerve sparing operation that same year. Then, radiotherapy the year after. After a year, he had his sling. And finally, after another year, he had a penile implant. The result of all of these? A happier Brian and cancer expelled. But of course, in between all of these are the challenges (Peyronies and incontinence) as well as happier moments (restoring that ‘visual effect’ down there). Plus, the smaller details that might not seem significant but actually are.
It’s another episode full of new tit bits! And if you want to know the answer to this question; can you perform more than once in 24 hours with your implant? - make sure to hit the play button below!

09 Aug 2022 | 97. Rob talks about Lymphedema - A possible side effect from surgery | 00:41:57 | |
“You can’t live your life being ill.” ~ Rob
For this episode, we talk with Rob all the way from the UK. Rob reached out to us asking for an episode on lymphedema so here it is. Rob did not have any symptoms of Prostate Cancer. Yet still, he chose to have himself tested. Most people with prostate cancer do not have any symptoms so it is very important to get tested. At 57 and after the New Year of 2019, Rob got conclusive and underwent a Radical Prostatectomy. Following his surgery his continence was ok but erectile function was nil. To help with this, he used penis pills, but this didn’t work for him. Then he opted to use the pump. It was ok until things got weird. Rob noticed that his groin wasn’t feeling right. It felt spongy. He didn’t know what it was. And because of the pandemic, his only recourse then was consultations through phone calls. It didn’t help… eventually he experienced severe pain in his groin that radiated to his shoulders. It only took 30 seconds of video conference for the doctor to tell him to go to the emergency department immediately. What he experienced was septic arthritis, which made him stay in the hospital for 12 days… and be on permanent antibiotics. How do all these things relate to his diagnosis, surgery, and Lymphedema? Rob will explain to you in detail! According to Rob, the possibility of lymphedema after surgery was not discussed during his pre-op phase. So, he is here with us today to share his experience, the steps he took to find answers, and how he is overcoming it - hoping to help even just one person. We thank Rob for reaching out to us and we know this episode will help other men recognize the signs and get help. Hit the button below to start listening. And if you find this episode helpful, please share it with your folks or networks. Episode 36 is the story of a man who has had not one but two penile prostheses! Meet David. In one of our recent episodes, Episode 29, we spoke to Dr. Sofield about Penile Prosthesis. Perhaps, you’ve been one of those curious bees who would like to know the experience - pros and cons - of having a penile prosthesis. And this is it! Listen to David who willingly shared his experience and proudly declared that he is on his 2nd prosthesis (his first one had worn out - he likes to say)! All your questions about this procedure - from costs to how you use it - will be answered in this episode. And one good thing to note - it all depends on the individual. ;) Also, heed how David really advocates for early testing - as this is a paramount step for prostate cancer diagnosis.
Enjoy! ----- ----------------------------

17 Nov 2020 | 10. “BINS 4 BLOKES’’ – Lunatic Lina & her campaign for men’s sanitary bins | 00:37:40 | |
Welcome to episode 10 of The Penis Project Podcast, this is the place to come to find out everything you've always wanted to know about men's health but were too embarrassed to ask.
This month is Movember which is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at https://au.movember.com
Today we hear an extremely passionate Lina Scaffildi talk about the emotional impacts of her proud husband having to wear nappies (continence pads) following surgery for prostate cancer and how this made her realise how difficult this can be for men. You may have never considered it before but what does a man do with incontinence pads when out in public? Men’s toilets do not come with sanitary bins so what is a bloke to do??!!! Lina has championed this cause with Dr Jo and change is happening. This is a story of stickability and not being afraid to speak out for what you believe in.

03 Aug 2021 | 45. Debunking the Mysteries of Continence with “Dr Jo”: Pads, Penile Clamps…pee and pooping problems! | 00:38:14 | |
Following on from last week’s podcast with Melissa about debunking the mysteries of Erectile Dysfunction, Dr. Jo will be debunking similar mysteries about continence issues that affect men! This includes both peeing and pooping problems, the use of continence pads and how to wean off them, and how to incorporate penile clamps for improved management of urinary leakage. Garnered from working with 1000’s of men in the same predicament clinically, Dr. Jo has protocols that will help any man gradually reduce continence pad use – including size, number, and the need for pads PLUS, a penile clamp protocol that will immediately improve the quality of life for heavy urinary leakage. Placed on the penis as a simple clamping device, the urinary flow stops, and the bladder re-trains, enabling a man to move, walk, exercise, and socialize without leakage! For some this has been a life-saver and for most men, restores dignity and confidence during a time of distress. In addition, this episode also includes information about pelvic floor muscle training, bladder irritants including caffeine and alcohol, and how they affect continence and confidence! Updates on bowel continence management and the Bins 4 Blokes campaign are also addressed in this jam-packed episode of tips from the physiotherapy clinic and Dr. Jo! ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

28 Dec 2022 | 116. Melissa at the PUC Masterclass; What patients want to know about sex and how to raise the subject? | 00:32:18 | |
For this episode, we will listen to Melissa’s talk at the Masterclass for Urologists last June.
We all know that talking about sexual health can be a bit awkward. But it's important to remember that patients are sexual beings too! GP's play a vital role in ensuring their patients' sexual health and wellbeing, and part of that is being able to talk about sexual function openly and comfortably.
On June 11th 2022, Melissa was invited to be a guest speaker for a Perth Urology Clinic’s Masterclass and her topic was “Why patients are embarrassed to ask their GP about sex”.
We sent out a survey asking our audience various questions on the subject which received an overwhelming response, with over a quarter taking the time to fill it out (we really appreciate this)!
To know the results and how Melissa nailed her presentation, have a listen!

31 Oct 2023 | 152: Wonky Willies, bent penis….what angle is your dangle? | 00:49:46 | |
Peyronies Disease Explained Did you know that prostate cancer survivors have a marked increased risk of developing Peyronies disease? The prevalence of diagnosed PD has been estimated to be 0.5% in adult males. PD is thought to happen in about 6 out of 100 men between the ages of 40 and 70. It’s rare in young men but has been seen in men in their 30's. The incidence of PD increases after prostate cancer treatment; however, studies vary in statistics. It is important to note that penile rehabilitation programs can reduce the risk, post prostate cancer treatment. For more information about Peyronies please read https://rshealth.com.au/peyronies-disease/ We have a new program coming soon to address this issue, a roadmap to penile perfection. Please register your interest at admin@melissahadleybarrett.com This common issue is not talked about often and there are treatments available. Causation is often difficult to ascertain, however treatment is the same regardless of the reason it has occurred. Today we will speak to two men who have faced this hurdle and come out the other side. I am particularly excited about this episode as we haven’t previously discussed the use of traction in this treatment. ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

07 Feb 2023 | 122. POLAXED BY HIS PROSTATE - AFL ICON ‘’DIPPER’’ – ROBERT DiPierdomenico lifts the lid on his own Men’s Health Crisis | 00:29:16 | |
For today's episode, we talk with Australian Hall of Famer (2007), five-time Hawthorn Premiership Player & 1986 Brownlow Medalist, Berto ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico! He has recently opened up about his own unexpected men’s health crisis in 2022 – an episode of urinary retention -, which caused pain ‘far worse than any previous football injury’ ’over his 240 game career. This included the punctured lung and multiple broken ribs suffered in the 1989 AFL Grand final vs Geelong - a game many report as the “finest ever GF” for its ferocity & the infamous poleaxing of Dipper by the ‘’GOD ‘’of Football-, Gary Ablett Snr. In this riveting interview with Dr Jo Milios (Men’s Health Physiotherapist) and West Coast Eagles Physiotherapist Chris ‘Tex’Perkin, Dipper reveals the stark story of his ‘’middle of the night’’ emergency, when he was carted off in an ambulance after his bladder became blocked, requiring emergency surgery, catheterisation and a going need to wear adult diapers. Dipper reveals what happened and why, and takes us on a personal journal of living with ongoing urinary incontinence linked to problems of the bladder & prostate! As you will hear, Dipper also points out that many lessons have been learnt, but there are still many more that need addressing when it comes to common physical issues in men’s health. For example, a referral to a physiotherapist specialising in pelvic floor muscle training was advised by his Drs, but then not undertaken. When Chris Perkin asks ‘’Why?’’, Dipper’s answers reveal much about the culture of the great Aussie male, where asking for help, or even a drink of water – were not part of the traditional male footy player’s macho image in the 1980’s. Stoicism, ‘’pushing thru’’ and showing no cracks in the armour were essential credentials, and reflect a time and place, you may be surprised to tune into. True to form, however, Dipper’s humour and candour are incredible! Listening to his attempts to perform a pelvic floor ‘’Nuts 2 Guts’ exercise will leave you scratching your head…
Most poignant to Dr Jo, however, was Dipper’s answer to ‘’how he is now?’’ – 8 months after surgery to clear the urinary tube, remove excess prostatic tissue (BHP- Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) and fix the urinary retention issue that had caused him so much pain. Well, Dipper says, ‘’I don’t need to empty my bladder 60-80 times per day and every 20 mins during the night anymore, I piss like a 12-year-old, I just don’t know when I’m going to piss and I don’t have prostate cancer…’.
ENJOY! LISTEN & LEARN! – Dipper is now a LEGEND of Men’s Health – the Merv Huges of Football. RESOURCES:

Did you know that 1/3 of Australian men do not have blokes to talk to? So today, we will talk with Mark who will share about The Man Walk, where you can find blokes to walk and talk with. The Man Walk started when Mark, with the help of his wife, wanted to change his routine. He started a daily morning walk from 6 to 7 AM. And along the way, a few men blokes and friends heard about what Mark was doing that they too joined him... Because of this, The Man Walk was born. Come along and listen to what The Man Walk is, what it does, and how amazingly simple it is but builds massive impact! Mark shared with us how side-by-side discussions (as in when you walk) help make conversations lighter for men, testimonials from the blokes, and how you can join or initiate Man Walks too! 09 Mar 2021 | 24. ‘’Ron” – Mindset and Fighting the Black Dog in Prostate Cancer | 00:38:24 | |
And how emotions can spiral after treatment.
Welcome to Episode 24! In this episode, we talk to Ron.
Previous episodes have focused on treatment and recovery of continence and sexual function following prostate cancer. This week will look at prostate cancer from a different angle, the emotional one. Ron generously discussed his emotions during this difficult time.
So here we go...
Ron’s approach when he learned of his Prostate Cancer diagnosis was pragmatic. He said he had three boxes to tick.
First, get treated. Second, handle incontinence. Third, sexual function. The first two were easy, the third not so easy and then there was the fourth which snuck up on him - the black dog.
What helped him? Writing down his thoughts. And happy pills.
Ron’s advice to men experiencing the same? Reach out to someone as soon as you can and don’t be afraid to use happy pills.

24 Mar 2022 | 77. How Prostate Cancer Liberated Picasso to Explore Sexual Creativity | 00:38:46 | |
(A refreshing look into Prostate Cancer Journey )
For today’s episode, we will be talking with Picasso. Picasso was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at 59 years old. His history involves up and down PSA levels. One day, his new GP, after looking at his records, advised him to go and see a specialist. After an MRI and a biopsy, Picasso had to undergo assisted robotic prostatectomy – amidst the early stages of the pandemic.
After surgery, Picasso had great results when it came to his continence (he did not even need to wear pads) and sexual function.
So now, two years after the surgery and already 61, Picasso has learned and started to get to know his penis in a different level. According to him, after the surgery, the way he was learning about his sexuality has been liberating. Coming from a religious background, Picasso has this limited core belief around sex... all this changed afterward.
And IF you’re curious to know what were the steps Picasso took to have these great results, have a listen! Spoiler alert – he did early Physio, Pilates, Yoga, and mindfulness. Plus penis vitamins after the surgery. 😉
Enjoy listening! If you are interested in doing Yoga or Pilates, send us a message and we’ll try our best to refer you to one.

28 Feb 2023 | 125. Ross the Runner The Eureka patient | 00:35:11 | |
Today, we speak with Ross. Ross will talk about his prostate cancer journey and a marathon he will be joining in London, at 64 years old!
Ross was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2020. This was two years after a routine check-up in 2018 showed elevated PSA readings. At first, Ross procrastinated taking action as everything he read about prostate cancer was all gloom and doom. After a lesson on the possibility of cancer spreading by his wife and meeting with Dr Jo and Melissa, Ross learned that it’s not all gloom and doom. That there’s hope. There’s help. And there are ways to treat prostate cancer and still have a quality of life. With this knowledge he decided to fight it head on. He started with his PRE-hab before surgery and enjoyed the results thereafter. Why? Because he stopped wearing pads 3-4 days post-op! As Dr Jo describes it, Ross the Runner is a Eureka patient. Now, Ross is ready to take on another challenge. He will be running the 42km London Marathon. For those who haven’t heard of this event, runners for this marathon need to apply and be accepted to join - in fact for every 20 applications received, only 1 gets accepted. Ross is that one. :) This episode is about the fact that people get scared and sometimes fear treatment. This is normal. We hope this episode will also teach you that there is hope, there is help, and it’s available - whatever step you take and to let you know that you’re not alone. Ross will run the marathon and raise funds for PCAHelp - an organization helping prostate cancer patients in Western Australia, to Prostate Cancer UK where they do fabulous research that benefits men and their families all around the world. If you would like to support this great cause and help other men with prostate cancer, please see links below.

06 Jan 2023 | 117. Why Exploring Yourself Makes Sense - With Body Curious owner, Jonn | 00:57:27 | |
For today’s episode, we talk with Jonn, the founder and owner of Body Curious.
Following an accident, Jonn was left with 15% whole body permanent impairment. However, through a combination of rehabilitation and yoga, he was able to restore his body function. This inspired him to create Body Curious in 2014, a men's only yoga studio committed to improving health outcomes for men. He is a qualified Yoga, Thai Yoga Massage teacher & Practitioner, and a Sexological Bodywork Practitioner.
Early on, Jonn realised that his studio was attracting more men than women. So, with this information, he decided to focus on men.
This opportunity to cater to only men brought about the first of his now many Naked Yoga sessions. His 1st class of Naked Yoga was attended by 20 naked men.
In case you’re wondering, yes, naked – meaning complete, pure natural bodies showing.
Jonn also talked about his sexological work, how it works, why it’s different from the others, and what it can and can’t do.
Interestingly, the discussion also touched upon personal pleasure, why it’s important to understand how to explore yourself and how to teach children about this quite taboo but important topic.
How early should a child use a cellular phone? What happens if they get exposed to porn? When is the best time to discuss sex and pleasure with them? Why is it important to let children know that they should not be ashamed of pleasure? And so many more compelling topics that we know you’ll surely relate to.

05 Dec 2023 | 157: Mismatched libidos - what, why and how. | 00:59:57 | |
This week we meet Dr. Elisabeth Gordon, a New York based Integrative sexual health psychiatrist, who is passionate about sexual health education, health and happiness. It was very exciting to speak with Elisabeth, who had some great insights to share on mismatched libidos. This is an issue I am often asked about in clinic, and I reached out to Dr. Elisabeth to see if she could share her knowledge with us. Dr. Gordon’s philosophy is that - “Sexuality is an essential component of identity and a key element of our lives and intimate relationships, with ourselves and others. In addition, sexual health is intrinsically related to physical and mental health. Being satisfied with your sexuality and sexual interactions can create a sense of happiness, support your well-being and health, and increase satisfaction with relationships. Unfortunately, many people have difficulties with sex, both psychologically and/ or physically and, in turn, these difficulties and dysfunctions can negatively impact your mood, health, and relationships.” I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed speaking with Elisabeth. She is a great communicator and makes a difficult subject all seem so simple. In this week’s episode, we have an inspirational chat with Ken Bezant, Prostate Cancer survivor who has taken things to the next level. Not only has he achieved the trifecta of cancer clearance, continence control, and Erectile function following treatment for Prostate Cancer - but Ken has also been giving back.
Initially, a member in the audience of a PCFA support group, Ken put his hand up to take over the reins when a new leader was needed.
Eight years on, Ken is still delivering monthly support meetings with special guests, workshops, and even a coffee morning for men and their partners affected by Prostate Cancer. Ken’s groups always pull a crowd because he is innovative, broad-minded, and happy to share his personal story by sharing his experiences and opening the door to others.
Ken’s journey was not without its challenges and he openly discusses his decision to receive a Penile implant to improve his sexual health. This proved to be a winner and Ken has never looked back…
As you will learn, Ken is also looking into the future and his most recent achievement has been to set up PCaHELP, a not-for-profit organisation that fills even more gaps for support.
Ken is a dynamo and we are thrilled to bring his story to you today.
Listen & learn - Ken is a giant in Prostate cancer survivorship!

11 Jan 2023 | 118. Farm Life Fitness with Louise, Specialised Fitness Programs for Farmers | 00:44:03 | |
Today, we speak with Louise, the owner and founder of Farm Life Fitness. Louise is more than just a health and wellness professional because she’s also a farmer. She lives and breathes the agricultural lifestyle. Her lived experience means she understands the challenges to health and wellness that farming and living rurally can present. Melissa had the pleasure of meeting Louise at a speaking event in December 2022 and was so impressed with her story she invited her to speak on The Penis Project.
The aim of Farm Life Fitness is to create a space for anyone living in rural areas who wants to connect with others and improve their health. This model was inspired by the experience of Louise and her husband which she shares in this episode.
Combining her experience as a sports physiologist and the observations she had made in her workplace where she noticed that despite therapy, clients were not always achieving their desired results, so Farm Life Fitness was born. Programs are designed to help people who are living remotely to have access to programs that improve not just their physical health but most importantly, their mental wellbeing.
Louise’s initiatives and programs highlight the need of folks in rural locations. If you live in a rural or remote location this one is for you, but if you live in a metro area, this will make you think and help you understand the lifestyle of the people who grow our food.
Enjoy listening!

23 Feb 2022 | 74. Meet Peri-pain Pete. Let’s talk about pain in the perineum. | 00:36:04 | |
Today, we speak with Peri-pain Pete. Pete is a 72-year old retired geologist who experienced pain in his perineum following prostate removal. Being a retiree who loves to cycle and is quite active sports wise, the peri-pain did affect his life. When did the pain start? According to Pete, it was when his catheter came out that he noticed the pain. The pain is exacerbated by standing but is relieved when sitting or lying down. After much research, Pete didn't find any explanation as to the cause. So... this episode will help us navigate through 'Peri-pain' and see what Pete did to resolve the issue. Then, Dr Jo will discuss a few possible causes of the pain plus a simple anatomy lesson. Melissa will also add information about medications and assessments. And lastly, this might be the first episode where Dr Jo teaches how to ‘subtlety’ do nuts-to-guts. It's an interesting episode again this week! We hope the golden nut-gets from today's episode will help those experiencing the same pain as Pete had. 01 Nov 2022 | 109. How Prostate Cancer Made Geoff More Open and Empathetic | 00:55:28 | |
Today, we talk with Geoffrey, a real Geoffrey. #IYKYK Often, we hear the negative side of having prostate cancer but today, we will focus on the good. Thanks to Geoff and his journey. Geoff was 65 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It all started when in the freeway, he had the uncontrollable urge to go to the loo. After this episode and a few tests, he received his diagnosis. At first, he didn't understand the results being shown to him. His words were, 'what I'm seeing was unintelligible'. But eventually, he was able to cope and was accepting of his coming surgery. In fact, he was feeling well-prepared. His secrets? Acceptance. Proper Preparation. Journaling. Setting realistic expectations. He kept a diary - it was a sort of discipline, a methodology to keep himself on track. He did his research. And with this, he was able to set realistic expectations. Now at 67 years old, he feels grateful for the experience. It seemed as though having prostate cancer made him a more open, empathetic person. This episode will touch upon a lot of topics - Geoff's prostate cancer recovery, the importance of pelvic floor preparation, of why some men seem to be more comfortable talking with women about their health, pilates, yoga, and the Stockdale Paradox. Geoff will explain the Stockdale Paradox, how this helped him with his preparation and mindset, and how important it is to have the absolute conviction that things are going to be okay. It's going to be another episode full of lessons... and we hope you get to learn a lot, too! ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

Kate is a little more naïve, so she was shocked as to what she heard and asked lots of interesting questions. I encourage you all to listen, have a laugh and keep an open mind. 10 Oct 2023 | 150: Making Every Day Count: Malcolm’s Road to Recovery | 00:35:37 | |
In this episode of The Penis Project Podcast, I have a chat with Malcolm, a 60 year old scientist who was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago. Malcolm candidly shares his post prostatectomy experience, elevated Gleason scores and the need for ongoing radiation therapy post-surgery. He also reflects on his lifelong role as being the one standing strong when everyone else falls down, and the significant adjustment it was to allow himself the rest and care he truly needed. While his journey hasn’t been all sunshine and sometimes plunged him into low moments, he reflects on the necessity of surrendering the constant need for total control. Instead, he learned to trust his medical team and take action where he could. Malcolm shared some wisdom that resonated with me during our chat. He said something that I think many can take to heart if faced with the challenges of cancer and fears for the future: "Don't let cancer make your decisions for you".

24 Nov 2022 | 111. Primo Pino Hits the Spot Everytime! | 00:45:55 | |
Today, we speak with beautiful boy Pino. Before hitting the play button, we'd like you to prepare a timer (your phone perhaps) because Dr. Jo will be giving a pelvic exercise test on the spot! At the start of the episode, Dr Jo will share a little bit of the history and evolution of prostatectomy. Then, since Dr Jo hadn't met Primo for 4 years, she will get him to perform a practical experiment to see how real muscle memory is. Yes. Pino will do his pelvic exercises whilst being interviewed here in the Penis Project podcast. As the listener, you can of course do the practical test yourself! Just follow Dr. Jo's instructions. Thank you, Pino, for your participation. ;) Once we've completed Dr. Jo's practical test, we listen to Pino's story. Pino, after surgery, enjoys semi-erections. But he would like to make things better. So he met with Melissa. Pino knows that there can be orgasms without erections but he also knew that in this case, his wife was missing out. To resolve the issue, Melissa suggested penile injections. And the rest is history. Pino has been hitting the right spot every time! For 18 months, he had no misfire. He and his wife have been enjoying the benefits of the injection since then. 02 Feb 2021 | 19. “Mr Positive Penis”– Prostate Cancer, Incontinence & a Sling | 00:53:15 | |
So Penis Project podcasters, you asked for it so we have delivered. This is a story where things post prostate treatment didn’t go quite as planned. Mr Positive Penis had a long rough road but got there eventually. Both Jo and I have had a lot of feedback that we have presented positive stories re prostate cancer rehab. So we have listened and given you a view from the not so rosey side.
Today, we speak with Positive Penis who didn't have the happiest of starts.
Positive Penis was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in October 2018. He started his pelvic floor sessions way in December before his February prostate surgery. Despite starting pre-surgery and the positive outlook that he'd be up and about after the surgery him having an active lifestyle, that was not the case - not at all.
According to Positive Penis, 'It wasn't easy'.
At two months after surgery, Mr. Positive Penis was still on antibiotics due to UTI. And at six months, he was still heavily leaking - the highest being 380g a day.
It was only after 18 months when he heard these words from a colleague, 'It's great to have you back', that he really felt he was on track.
Despite the hardships and setbacks, Mr. Positive Penis was able to travel 7 countries in 7 weeks (with the help of a penis clamp) and walk from Cape-to-Cape to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Mr. Positive Penis also had to go through Urodynamics - an assessment of pressure flows of the bladder and rectum. It might sound awful but according to Mr. Positive Penis it was all ok - it is something needed to be done after all. The result was that he had poor control of his bladder.
Listen too as he talks about 'The Sling' ~ which made things better!
And then Mr. Positive Penis talks about Melissa, how he was surprised that 'people like Melissa' exists 😂, the importance of cuddling, snuggling, and communication.
From the experience, here's what Mr. Positive Penis has to say:
"You should not be alone, you don't need to rely on 1 or 2 people. Think of who could be your team. :) You are not actually by yourself, you need to be aware of who could best support you."
Listen to Mr. Positive Penis, Dr. Jo, and Melissa to know more about the things that are being done when things aren't as rosey after surgery - urodynamics, penile clamps, dribbling, sling, artificial sphincter, the great effects of pelvic floor exercises, pilates to help with incontinence, pushing boundaries, staying positive, and a lot more! ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/ All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/

02 Dec 2021 | 63. Meet “Proctor””- Pelvic Pain, Prostate Cancer, wild-type erections & suppositories! | 00:43:09 | |
Today, we talk to Proctor. Proctor's story also started when he was 18-19 years old. Much like the same with Pierre, Proctor also experienced pain in his perineum... and in his testicles. He also went to different doctors, was prescribed with pain medications, and still no explanation with how the pain is occurring. Then he had robotic radical prostatectomy after his Prostate Cancer was picked up by a diligent GP. All of these brought Proctor to Dr. Jo and Melissa - and the rest is history. :) This episode will not only share Proctor's journey, discuss 'wild type erections' but will also show you the importance of having a very diligent GP. Enjoy listening!

20 Jun 2023 | 141. Mike the Determinator and Samantha the Bewitcher | 00:50:40 | |
Meet Mike and Samantha, they contacted The Penis Project as they were keen to share their story, which is one of love, connection and romance. Samantha and Mike had been married for 45 years. And through it all, have enjoyed a very healthy and active sex life. This halted when they both got diagnosed with cancer - endometrial for Samantha and prostate for Mike. Mike was very open with his doctor about the importance of his sexual function after treatment. His doctor understood his predicament and offered nerve-sparing surgery. Like most men, Mike had problems with incontinence after surgery which affected his sexual function amongst other things, and this caused him to feel depressed. Thankfully, with help from his healthcare team, Samantha and himself, he was able to overcome it. Now, less than a year post-op, Mike advocates the use of pumps, injections, and exploring things to make your sex life better. Samantha also shares the importance of finding all the information available to aid recovery. Be your own advocate is her motto. The same with all the others who we had in the podcast - Mike and Samantha encourage anyone to have yourself checked. Just get checked. And lastly, Mike and Samantha's advice to others is this: 'To just refuse to grow up'. When they go out on dates, they always sit on same side of the dinner booth.... they're always holding hands when out... always have an arm around each other at the theater...etc., and people ask from time to time why they're so happy together after 46 years of being together.... and her comment to those folks are that "we have refused to grow up"! And they make it a point after love making sessions to look at each other and ask cheerfully "what's wrong with us at 65 & 70 yrs old"? And their answer is always the same to others as well as themselves...."we just refuse to grow up"!!

20 Sep 2022 | 103. Palmer’s Open Prostatectomy Journey and More; Bladder control, pumps, PDE 5s, and becoming hulk | 00:51:03 | |
Today, we speak with Palmer who, in the middle of the episode, transformed into Bruce Banner (the green hulk). You'll get to know how this happened when you click the play button below. Anyway, Palmer err Bruce will talk about his prostate cancer journey which happened to be quite recent, just the 23rd of May this year! We wanted to share Palmer's story with all of you this 3rd week of the Prostate Cancer (PC) awareness month to let you know that it's not always gloom and doom when one gets a PC diagnosis. Palmer will navigate us through the process he took to help him decide what treatment option to choose (amongst three choices), who helped him do this, and his overall experience after surgery. So, for anyone who just got diagnosed with PC and is somewhat confused about what the next big steps are, Palmer's story can be a great guide for you. One very interesting question that came up during this episode, that is question… Do you poo and wee at the same time? Send us your answers and we might make an episode about this too and see if there's some meaning behind it. Further in the episode, we discussed the importance of pelvic floor exercises, orgasms that aren't messy, penile rehabilitation using a Vacurect pump ie., making your penis look like the Hulk, PDE 5s, and so much more. Have a great time listening to our week's info-packed episode. And if you have the time, make sure to take down some notes and leave a review so we can help more people just like you.

17 Sep 2024 | 179: Robert- Everything he has done is hard won! A prostate cancer story. Spice up your rehab! | 00:46:07 | |
This is a very special episode featuring none other than Victoria Cullen from “A touchy Subject” and Robert, a longtime patient of both Victoria and me (Melissa Hadley Barrett). Robert had an open prostatectomy in May 2009 and has been on a journey of self-discovery ever since. He initially saw men’s health Dr in Brisbane for 4-5 years until he went searching for other options. He injected twice a week for years a mysterious mix … he did achieve an erection, but this was not ‘wife friendly” as no spontaneity. He was only 57 years old at this stage and disappointed with the loss of what was previously a good intimate relationship. Unfortunately, he received advice that vacuum pumps were a waste of time and used injections for rehab, this became costly and tedious and eventually he ran out of steam 2016 and gave up. He felt shame about loss of function. Along the way he met various health professionals whom he asked if they could help and usually, they didn’t respond well until he was eventually sent to a sex therapist who convinced him that outercourse was the way of the future. Finally in 2021 he was introduced to Victoria’s work by a physio he saw to assist with incontinence issues, and he hasn’t looked back. Through Victoria, he met me and Tess Deveze and continued to spice up his rehab and life. This is a story of perseverance, patience, resilience, and of finding pleasure and joy. I hope you learn as much from Robert as Victoria, and I have and can use some of his lessons and apply them to you. 12 Oct 2021 | 55. “Patrick Lumbroso Trilogy”: Part 2 Sex after Prostate Cancer: A man with a plan is unstoppable | 00:39:10 | |
SEX after Prostate Cancer is CHALLENGING!
In this episode, we reacquaint you with Men’s Health Psychologist Patrick Lumbroso (RIP) who we first introduced in Episode 4, in our first ‘’pop up’’ edition. and then again in Episode 50. Today’s post-humous chat focuses on how men feel when it comes to all things penile rehabilitation and when things don’t work when trying to get it up! From injections to foreplay and penile implant surgery- Patrick holds NOTHING back!! Patrick was a man on a mission to educate the world and his phrase Á MAN WITH A PLAN IS UNSTOPPABLE” also applies to himself. Please remember that the information provided needs contexct – it was recorded in April 2017 and so some things have changed including outcomes for post-surgical erectile dysfunction. (Listen to Urologist Dr David Dangerfield, Episode 46 for restoring sexual function with Nerve Grafting)!
Patrick, who founded ‘’ManFocus Clinic’’ in Sydney Australia was passionate about providing quality rehabilitation and counseling service for men and their partners, especially those undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. Knowing the potential side effects of surgery – including erectile and urinary dysfunction - could greatly impact a man’s self-esteem, Patrick was earnest in his goals to address the big gaps seen in male mental health. Patrick’s primary focus was in education and support for men experiencing any form of sexual dysfunction, and although he did not complete his PHD due to his premature passing, his work is founding and explores new frontiers in men’s health.
In 2017 Dr Jo interviewed Patrick over 3 hours and episode 55 is the secind of 3 episodes bringing Patrick’s experience and desire to assist others to be better prepared and more proactive in their recovery. Knowing his death from a brain tumour was imminent, Patrick did not hold back. Brace yourself for this raw account…..
Patrick’s wife Donna and children, Joel and Rebecca have agreed to share this body of work, that remains as relevant today as when it was recorded. We thank them for their generosity.

01 Feb 2022 | 71. Wonky Willys - more on Peyronies with Dr Jo (Causes, treatments, and resources) | 00:28:17 | |
Did you know that 1 in 6 men develop Peyronies after Radical prostatectomy?
So for today’s episode, we will talk about it - Peyronies disease... but instead of a patient’s, it will be FROM a physiotherapist’s point of view. And for this one, we will be talking to our resident physio, Dr. Jo.
Dr. Jo will discuss the causes, the old (fad) treatments, the newest discoveries (focus shockwave plus Dr Jo’s research), theories why this happens (‘Neuropraxia’ and trauma), herbal supplements that MAY help, and a few more useful information you can use and/or share in case you know a friend/loved one that has it.
You’ll also get to learn about Neoman (your next fave channel) and online resources that help with ‘traction’.
The takeaway that we wish everyone applies; if you notice a change of shape in your penis or in your partner’s, don't be afraid. Please show it to your health professional. The sooner we get to it, the better. Please get help.
Don’t forget to also check the full show notes to see the full list of resources mentioned in this episode.
Enjoy listening! And if you can spare a minute or two to share and comment so we get to help more willy wonkies. The lesser wonkies, the better. 😉

12 Sep 2023 | 148: Prostate Cancer - The Silver Lining/Fit, Fabulous Before 50 | 00:36:22 | |
On this episode of The Penis Project I chat with Brook, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the young age of 47. Having experienced zero symptoms, Brook’s decision to get tested was prompted by his brother's own diagnosis just a year prior, at the age of 44. Following his surgery, Brook experienced a remarkable recovery (I’m talking the return of erections while his catheter was still inserted!). However, he also emphasizes the vital lesson he gained about the importance of allowing your body to recuperate and embracing a slower pace for healing. Brook's journey is a testament to the importance of early detection and proactive health choices.
