If the story of the 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision, which gave us the unlimited abortion licence, had been filmed as a pro-abortion message movie, the money would have rolled in and financed the project in a single day.

But when actor director Nick Loeb told the truth about the events of 1973, he and his production crew faced opposition, rejection, and no shortage of hatred thrown their way. They had to shoot under a fake name (“1973”) just to stay under the radar. But the final title is Roe v Wade, starring Jon Voight, Robert Davi, and Stacey Dash, with some surprise cameos we can’t release yet.It’s set for a 2019 release, unless further attacks delay its debut.

This episode debuted six years ago, and I could think of no better show to honor my all-time favorite movie, Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1947)  through the eyes of two women with close ties to its creation.

If Mr. Capra didn’t write it, why do I call it “Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life? It’s because that’s how the movie was marketed, which helps explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Most of Mr. Capra’s pre-World War II movies were so sweet-hearted that they later earned the moniker “Capracorn,” not meant as a compliment.

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, it also ranked number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

Think about that. In light of the fact that hundreds of thousands of movies have been made, this is a jaw-dropping achievement.

By the end of the Second World War, though, the mood of the movie-going public had shifted, as I wrote about the making of the movie in National Review a few years ago HERE.

The next day after it was published, an appreciative email from a woman named Mary Owen arrived in my inbox. Turns out, Mary is the daughter of actress Donna Reed, who played Mary Bailey, the wife of James Stewart’s George Bailey.

I thanked her for the lovely email and we had a few back-and-forths. After my podcast was up on two feet and spreading around the world (110 countries and counting), I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to talk about her mother’s role in this now-international favorite Christmas movie and to learn some back story to her mother’s career and her commitment to writing back to the G.I’s who wrote to her from the trenches and the gun turrets of World War II.

The interview segues nicely into the next one, a rich conversation with actress Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu, one of the four Bailey kids. Remember Zuzu’s petals? This was a real treat for me who loves the movie so well, and I know it will be for you as well.

Does God have a sense of humor? Why are funny things funny, anyhow? The excessively funny Tom Leopold ("Seinfeld," "Cheers," and many other shows) talks about the power of humor and the not-quite-likely story of coming to the Catholic Faith from Judaism.

Vancouver-based PR director Jim Hoggan (pronounced Hogan) thinks strong disagreement can co-exist with civility. In today’s media culture, modes of communication (from emails to memos to blog posts) have become more swords than words.

Have you noticed how many YouTube debates are described as some version of, “Watch our hero eviscerate (or slaughter/kill/slay/own/etc. the other guy”? We can’t seem to disagree without destroying.

This is why Hoggan wrote I’m Right and You’re An Idiot: The Toxic State of Public Discourse and How to Clean it Up.

What’s interesting is that he takes a definite (possibly dogmatic) stand on what used to be called global warming – rebranded as “climate change” – so his communication lessons are tied to a controversial topic from the get-go. But the merits or demerits of Al Gore’s approach to climate change weren’t the topic of the interview – the need for engagement at the level of facts and not facetiousness was. And in this interview, Mr. Hoggan models the civility he recommends.

His 15-year-old hands were shaky on the steering wheel of the family van. Not old enough to legally drive, he stepped on the gas and gained speed. He heart raced, too, but more from dread than excitement, his eyes narrowed with dark zeal. He felt part zombie, part ghost, as though watching from outside himself as the nearest object loomed ahead, rushing toward him – an oncoming car. He yanked the wheel sharply into it, at 60 miles an hour.

It was the day Luke Maxwell tried to commit suicide.

From that terrible crash came a remarkable “upward bounce” to recovery and restoration. Luke spoke to me about the traits and feelings that indicate clinical depression, including the MMD (major depressive disorder) with which he was diagnosed in the hospital, almost on the spot.

Basilico's Pasta e Vino has been a staple local neighborhood Italian restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA since 1999, when founder Rosemarie created and introduced her original recipes, and traditional home-style rustic Italian cooking to Orange County.  Son Tony built the restaurant at its current location as a gift to her, a tribute to her dedication sacrifices, and love for her customers and community.  Now in its 21st year in business, Basilico's continues to serve its food and customers with great care and love!  And in 2020 into 2021, it is no longer just a restaurant, but instead, a 1776 Tavern where Patriots gather, as they have pledged their business as a 'Constitutional Battleground' in the fight against all Lockdown Tyranny.

Three obvious things stand out about Basilico’s Pasta e Vino: the food is delicious, the line-ups are considerable, and no one is wearing a Fauci/Newsom mask. You read that right. No masks allowed. Mr. Roman refused to lock down his establishment since March 19, 2020, and will not permit customers to wear a mask upon entry. His restaurant has remained packed despite a direct challenge from CA Governor Gavin Newsom and the liquor board. 

That decision earned him opprobrium (including more than one death threat) but mostly high accolades....

It’s been over a year since professional polemicist Milo Yiannopoulos more or left public life after losing three gigs in a row: his Breitbart editor position, his Simon & Schuster publishing deal (for his book Dangerous), and his plum CPAC speaker slot.

A massive plummet from the heights of internet fame (infamy?)

So what really happened? What did he say on those 2015 and 2016 podcasts that surfaced last February? More importantly, what did he mean? And does he have any regrets?

Milo, like probably 99% of the population, Catholic or otherwise, has gaps between what he professes and what he lives. St. Paul describes the phenomenon well in Romans 7:19, “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.” Certainly, going ahead with an attempted marriage to his boyfriend puts him at odds with the teaching of the Catholic Church.

He has a new book out titled, Diabolical: How Pope Francis Has Betrayed Clerical Abuse Victims Like Me—and Why He Has To Go. Many of his followers, and obviously his enemies, want to know why someone who is Openly Gay [™] and civilly married to his boyfriend is qualified to criticize the Pope. On June 3, 2020, while in the middle of interviewing black MAGA leader Henry Davis, Timothy Gordon found out that he had been fired by his employer Garces Memorial Catholic High School in Bakersfield, CA. 

He spoke up against Black Lives Matter. A petition went around, and boom, Garces sacked the father of six.

Ireland was once known and loved as the land of saints and scholars. Stout in its Catholicism and justly proud of its traditions of literature, of art and of Guinness—along with a veritable factory of holy missionaries to places like Africa—Ireland has taken a slow tumble into chaos.

The Irish have fled the church pews like rats from the Titanic in the last 30 years; Catholic leadership on the old sod has been badly hobbled by scandal and tepid leadership; and, corporately, the Irish media have been crafting an aggressively secularist narrative about the nature of the country and its venerable past.

This episode debuted exactly five years ago, and I could think of no better show this year to honor my all-time favorite movie, Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1947)  through the eyes of two women with close ties to its creation.

If Mr. Capra didn’t write it, why do I call it “Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life? It’s because that’s how the movie was marketed, which helps explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Most of Mr. Capra’s pre-World War II movies were so sweet-hearted that they later earned the moniker “Capracorn,” not meant as a compliment.

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, it also ranked number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

Think about that. In light of the fact that hundreds of thousands of movies have been made, this is a jaw-dropping achievement.

By the end of the Second World War, though, the mood of the movie-going public had shifted, as I wrote about the making of the movie in National Review a few years ago HERE.

The next day after it was published, an appreciative email from a woman named Mary Owen arrived in my inbox. Turns out, Mary is the daughter of actress Donna Reed, who played Mary Bailey, the wife of James Stewart’s George Bailey.

I thanked her for the lovely email and we had a few back-and-forths. After my podcast was up on two feet and spreading around the world (110 countries and counting), I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to talk about her mother’s role in this now-international favorite Christmas movie and to learn some back story to her mother’s career and her commitment to writing back to the G.I’s who wrote to her from the trenches and the gun turrets of World War II.

The interview segues nicely into the next one, a rich conversation with actress Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu, one of the four Bailey kids. Remember Zuzu’s petals? This was a real treat for me who loves the movie so well, and I know it will be for you as well.

I learned, among other things, how much Mrs. Grimes suffered as a teen when her mother died and then the next year her father was killed and she became a ward of the state—then “rescued” by an aunt and uncle in Missouri, which was an unhappy home situation. Karolyn also played Debbie, the daughter of David Niven and Loretta Young in another Christmas favorite, The Bishop’s Wife.

For those of us who can’t gobble up enough trivia and true stories about It’s a Wonderful Life, Mrs. Grimes is a treasure trove of first-hand memories and insights! Yes, I was star-struck, okay? Is that so wrong?

Most people flee from labels like “dirty trickster,” “buffoon,” and “prince of darkness. Presidential advisor and author Roger Stone revels in it. Splashes around in it so as to defuse its sting. Most of what you think you know about him is written by his enemies.

Joseph Sciambra says porn made him gay. At least, it was a major causal factor in his dark journey from shy Catholic kid to appearing in amateur gay porn and doing degrading things in leather bars. Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman, This is Spinal Tap, Best In Show, A Mighty Wind) said, “When it comes to comedy, Tom Leopold has an extra gene. Ever wonder about the origins of scary movies and disturbing novels? E. Michael Jones, founder and editor of Culture Wars www.culturewars.com magazine and the author of over a dozen books on Catholic faith and culture, locates the horror genre in the chaotic wake of the Enlightenment.

The first horror novel is considered to be Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Or the Modern Prometheus. Most people are unaware of the severely dysfunctional, occultic, and thoroughly Enlightenment family context in which Mary Shelley was raised and into which she married (her family history and that of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley’s read like a bad novella).

These people embraced the political and sexual revolution ignited by the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Bad consequences were the result. Author and nationally syndicated radio host Michael Medved has an extra dollop of gratitude for America. He wears it on his sleeve. It fairly pours out of him when he speaks. It certainly animates his newest book, The American Miracle: Divine Providence In the Rise of the Republic. I’ll get to this fascinating book in a moment.

I won’t hide my admiration for the host of The Michael Medved Show, which is, in the words of its intro, “the number one show in America on politics and pop culture.” Been a listener for over 15 years. I know what gets under his skin, what he finds funny, annoying, and so on. Last year, with grace and resolve, he successfully fought back against what has to be a professional broadcaster’s worse nightmare: a diagnosis of throat cancer.

That fight seems to have intensified his love of God and country – two loves he acquired later in life. At Yale Law School he became friends with a young woman named Hillary Rodham, and his fellow boomer-era travelers seemed collectively destined for a liberal worldview, if not leadership.

But Medved’s moral conversion to an essentially conservative Republican point of view, and his spiritual return to Orthodox Judaism as a baal teshiva (reverts to orthodox Catholicism can relate to the concept) are unlikely twists to an otherwise “pre-set” story. His memoir Right Turns gives a fuller account.

In our conversation, Medved details an unusual sequence of what have been nicknamed God-incidences – winks of Providence – in the rise and flourishing of the United States. This Canadian ex-pat living in Southern California had never heard of most of them. The list of astounding military victories, date parallels, bizarre weather phenomena that helped the ragtag Colonists beat back the fearsome British naval machine point to a Someone behind this exceptional national experiment known as America.

The American Miracle is a good place to discover signs of God’s hand in secular history. It’s also a reminder to stop whining about “how divided we are.” The country has been far more roiled and riven in the past. Ever on the brink of disaster, the American ship keeps righting herself.

Most Americans (and many Canadians!) tend to view the political climate in Canada as hopeless, being run indirectly by LGBT activists, leftist public officials, neo-Marxist advisors, and most of it aided and abetted by a very liberal media establishment.

Even if this hyperbole were true, there are some people with conservative principles willing to step into the breach and run for office. My guest this week is one of them. Tanya Granic Allen is a wife, mother, professional communicator, parental rights advocate—and a practicing Catholic.

In 2018, despite rising popularity among Ontario voters, she was removed (illegally?) by Premier Doug Ford as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party leadership. That’s a longer side-bar story, but in this interview, she talks about “social conservative” values and how they shape voters’ decisions as much as economic or other factors. Her presidency of PAFE (Parents As First Educators) put pro-family, anti-sex education concerns in the public’s mind, which is a rare set of priorities in a Canadian politician. (Even privately pro-life ones are generally chicken to talk about it.)

But this unabashedly pro-life Catholic leader is a sign of great hope for a country under the spell of rabid secularism for too long.

This is fascinating. What is the nature of the great experiment called “America”? We say that Poland is a Catholic country, India is a Hindu country, and Turkey is a Muslim country, and so on.

We also say America is a Christian country. But in what sense? Because the majority are followers of Jesus? But Jesus isn’t mentioned in the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, or the Bill of Rights—the Christian religion is nowhere endorsed as the state religion.

 Liz Yore is an international child advocate attorney whose legal career spans a wide range of legal issues relating to the exploitation of children. She served as Special Counsel to Oprah Winfrey as her child advocate, both at Harpo, Inc. and at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. 

She is also a cradle Catholic who has done a ton of research into the Chinese Communist Party and the current Vatican. It’s not a pretty picture. But we have to know what’s going on, despite the uncomfortableness of the conversation.

Christopher West has devoted his adult life to communicating the beauty of the Catholic Faith, particularly through the insights of what’s known everywhere as the Theology of the Body.

First in archdiocesan religious education, then with the Theology of the Body Institute, and now with The Cor Project, West has been out in front, pointing out the Source of Beauty, making connections between superficially disperate dots, and, of course, being the world’s most famous expositor of the thought of St. John Paul the Great’s Theology of the Body.

His life work of explaining and interpreting the five years’ worth of the great Pope’s General Audiences (1979-1984) has launched a whole cottage industry of books, DVDs, and seminars.

I have interviewed Christopher West more than once, but this conversation with him is my favorite. We talked films that fairly vibrate with low-density gospel ideas, pop music lyrics that point Upward, the sad misalignment that leads to giving into the siren song of porn (he calls it “aiming too low”), and why he thinks the Sexual Revolution is on its last lap.

You’ll find this conversation bracing, and maybe challenging, if I had to guess. West pulls insights whole cloth from unexpected places. I’m grateful for his endorsement of the upcoming revised and expanded edition of my first book, Sex Au Naturel.  (More about that exciting development down the road.)

It’s the moral law written in your heart. It’s thing you can’t not know. And it underpins civil law and morality. It’s the natural law. Starting with the Greeks, and “baptized” by St. Thomas Aquinas, natural law is the fundamental way that we operate morally. Rooted in God’s eternal law, natural law has to do with what rational beings must do, and avoid doing, to perfect themselves.

This can get pretty nerdy fast. Fortunately, this episode’s guest (a former atheist who became a Catholic in 2009) is gifted at breaking natural law down into bite-sized morsels.

Fog of confusion has settled over the Catholic Church on a number of fundamental teachings in the last 50 years. This is the certainly the case with capital punishment. Countless Catholics have been led to believe that “the death penalty” is morally equivalent to abortion, and many documents from the episcopal level have appeared urging Catholics to vote against laws supporting it.

The late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago tried to square the circle with his “seamless garment” approach. While Catholic moral teaching does belong to a whole tradition and thus can’t be segmented into separate silos, the net result of the Bernardin proposal has been further confusion.

Did the Catholic Church change her teaching on capital punishment under Pope Saint John Paul II? What about the informal remarks by Pope Francis? What does the Bible say about it? Are there conditions under which a Catholic can still support capital punishment in good conscience?

Have you noticed how few people are willing to oppose publically the transgender agenda, no matter how dangerous to young mind—not to mention to the suffering people who go through with the mutilation surgery?

Oh, many people will privately object, and tutt tutt their disapproval.

British journalist and writer Caroline Farrow knows all about the first option. The Catholic wife and mother of five young kids appeared on ITV’s  “Good Morning Britain” in September 2018, and used the Wrong Pronoun for the son of trans activist activist Susie Green, with whom Farrow was debating. The son was born Jack, a male, and subjected to the mutilation procedure on his 16th birthday in that bastion of high tech surgery, Thailand, and now goes by Jackie. Soon after, she described the situation as child abuse and the procedure in correct medical terminology on Twitter.

That’s why the Surrey Police called her recently with concerrrrrrrrrns.

She was “invited” to have a “voluntary” meeting with law enforcement after Ms. Green sicced them on her, scouring the internet for No Good Bad Things she may have said.  All for using words on television and Twitter felt to be hurtful and offensive.

Monty Python, meet George Orwell. Caroline Farrow’s story is of a piece with my first interview with Dr. Jordan Peterson back in February, 2017, on compelled speech. In some ways, Peterson is the theory, Farrow the practice.

If you do an online search, the MSM routinely slaps together unflattering photos of the attractive Mrs. Farrow, label her a “devout Catholic” (in the tone of racists when they say “colored woman”), and invariably describe her comments as “transphobic.” Her story is, inter alia, an invitation for Catholics and other men of good will to find their courage and stand up to the new onslaught against free speech and religious freedom.

Aaron Kheriaty is about the opposite of the Casting Central stereotype of a sue-happy culture warrior. On the contrary, the Notre Dame/Georgetown-trained professor of psychiatry is the picture of calm, articulate communication. As a teaching psychiatrist also in clinical practice, the author of The Catholic Guide to Depression exudes compassion and respect for suffering people. 

When his employer, the University of California Irvine, imposed the Covid vaccine on staff and faculty and refused to give Kheriaty an exception—because he already had Covid and hence already enjoyed the more powerful natural immunity—his options ran down to zero quickly.

So he sued UCI. This is a landmark case for several important reasons having nothing to do with Covid-19.

Most Americans (and many Canadians!) tend to view the political climate in Canada as hopeless, being run indirectly by LGBT activists, leftist public officials, neo-Marxist advisors, and most of it aided and abetted by a very liberal media establishment.

Even if this hyperbole were true, there are some people with conservative principles willing to step into the breach and run for office. My guest this week is one of them. Tanya Granic Allen is a wife, mother, professional communicator, parental rights advocate—and a practicing Catholic.

In 2018, despite rising popularity among Ontario voters, she was removed (illegally?) by Premier Doug Ford as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party leadership. That’s a longer side-bar story, but in this interview, she talks about “social conservative” values and how they shape voters’ decisions as much as economic or other factors. Her presidency of PAFE (Parents As First Educators) put pro-family, anti-sex education concerns in the public’s mind, which is a rare set of priorities in a Canadian politician. (Even privately pro-life ones are generally chicken to talk about it.)

But this unabashedly pro-life Catholic leader is a sign of great hope for a country under the spell of rabid secularism for too long.

Perhaps because of movies like The Exorcist and TV shows like Ghost Hunters, one wonders if more people believe in demons than in angels.

Demonologist Adam Blai has devoted his life to training exorcist priests and lecturing on the different levels of demonic activity: temptation, oppression, infestation, and (the much rarer) possession. His sometimes harrowing experiences are found in his book, Hauntings, Possessions, and Exorcisms, which is part autobiography and part field manual.

He co-authored an important book about the Covid scam titled The Price of Panic, and has a new one out, that does many things well, including explaining the difference between conservative and based; and scores of examples of fallacies and how to spot them.

 Venerable Pope Pius XII was the pope from 1939 to his death in 1958, straddling an extremely dangerous and unstable time in modern history. He was universally lauded as a hero after World War II for his brave and often risky strategy to counter the reckless Reich machine controlled by Adolph Hitler. Many Jews in particular wrote glowing tributes to this Pope, born Eugenio Pacelli.

But a funny thing happened in 1963. A mediocre communist playwright named Rolf Hochhuth came out with an off-off-off Broadway play called The Deputy in which the Holy Father was portrayed as the Fuhrer’s lackie.

That was the beginning of a PR campaign to smear the late great pope’s person and legacy. Professor of Law at Ole Miss, Ron Rychlak has specialized in telling the truth and countering the bold lies about Pope Pius XII. Rychlak’s work has been praised by an eclectic array of scholars and leaders, including the Jewish Gary Krupp and Rabbi Eric Silver.

If you’ve ever been tongue-tied when you hear solemn nonsense about “Hitler’s Pope,” this is the interview for you. Professor Rychlak has written or edited books that make good use of his legal mind with lots of meticulous research, including the very readable, Hitler, the War, and the Pope 

No one has a better grasp of the facts, and your grasp will get stronger after hearing this.
