11 Jul 2022Authenticity Over Attachment with Monica01:02:57

This week we have former client Monica joining us on the pod! She recently completed the 14 week group coaching program and is here today to share more about internalizing the voices of others and how to heal from that. She and Lisa discuss the importance of having a supportive community while doing this work, as well as building an awareness of when you are perpetuating abuse against yourself.

Topics include:

[2:40] Food and its role in early childhood trauma. The role external figures play in creating our inner voice around food when we aren’t old enough to have authority and autonomy. They’re not our thoughts to begin with but we internalize them and believe that they’re our own.

[11:29] Monica’s decades long journey from experiencing an industrial accident that led her to the work of Nicole Sachs and then to Lisa. How awareness around food and emotions is built gradually, Monica’s fears but internal desperate desire to do something different upon beginning the group coaching program.

[19:12] Changing your reality only comes through action - actively making different choices than you have in the past. Unfamiliarity prompts fear in the brain, but only by moving through that fear can we make the change we want. Fear of sharing and being vulnerable in group was an initial concern but became one of the biggest benefits for Monica.

[27:10] Authenticity over attachment, learning to express your truth rather than live your life according to your perception of what other people want or think. The importance of a healing community to help you practice this. The shift that comes when you become aware of your limiting beliefs.

[39:00] Since going through the group program, one of Monica’s biggest life shifts has been living in eating regularly, after learning about atypical anorexia. Prioritizing overall wellness rather than focusing only on how much or how little you eat.

[50:09] Building an awareness of when you are perpetuating abuse against yourself. Taking back the power to set the course for our own lives.

18 Jul 2022Body, Identity, and Culture with Jen01:18:47

Jen’s journey began by listening to this very podcast! After going through the group program and aftercare (the alumni group), she’s here on the pod that started it all for her. Jen is a scientist in the field of cancer research, a wife and mom, and she struggled for years with losing and gaining weight until she finally discovered Out of the Cave through a friend. Together, Jen and Lisa discuss the relationship between body, identity, and culture, the journey of allowing and discovering, and how all your relationships change as you do this work.

Topics include:

[6:45] The early years of Jen’s childhood. Grocery shopping with her mom was a bonding activity and she loved cooking, but she and her brother were left on their own while both parents worked which often left them feeling lonely. The difference between ‘innocent’ and ‘harmless.’

[13:19] Struggling with her Filipina identity growing up in America, not looking like a ‘typical’ Filipina. Minimizing herself to avoid attracting the attention of bullies. The relationship between body, identity, and culture. Growing up with judgmental parents who focus on flaws.

[18:24] Age 8-18, food brought her happiness and became a reliable companion. Feeling the pressure to look a certain way to be accepted by her peers.

[23:49] After reaching her highest weight in college in response to the confusion and discomfort of her parents’ separation, Jen spent 16 years on Weight Watchers to try and get her weight under control. Realizing that she was gaining confidence from her boyfriends, from their compliments and their attention.

[33:18] Examining the belief that we exist now as a ‘before’ picture and that once we become the ‘after’ picture, we can stay there. But as human beings, we are in our bodies every day until we die - it doesn’t end or stop, change is a constant in our lives.

[35:44] Discovering the Out of the Cave podcast and connecting to the brain science that filled in the missing pieces from her history with Weight Watchers and therapy. Building an understanding of what actually caring for your whole self looks like, not just your physical self.

[43:07] Lisa’s recollection of Jen’s first emails. Jen’s experiences upon gaining new tools from the podcast and group coaching. The way her relationship with her husband and her kids has changed just from the way she talks to them.

[50:10] The shift in awareness that came about from learning the reason WHY we think, say, and do certain things. Challenging limiting beliefs, recognizing your humanity, meeting your own needs.

[1:02:23] Desiring and manifesting a deeper level of relationships. What it means to be out of the cave as a spiritual being having a physical experience. Making the decision to end the cycle.

[1:08:09] Allowing yourself to be open and truthful and authentic. Learning to put yourself first. Understanding the way everything that came before impacts your present day.

11 Nov 2024Leaning into Kindness and Self-Compassion with Susan01:20:52

Lisa is joined by Susan, an OOTC group coaching alum from Rochester, Minnesota, who shares her challenges related to body image, trauma, and personal growth. • Family dynamics
  • Grief and Loss
  • Personal Growth through Challenges
  • Radical Acceptance and Self-Compassion

[1:11] Lisa and Susan begin the conversation with Susan introducing herself and sharing her early memories of feeling envious of her sister’s thin body and internalizing negative comments about her own “stocky” body. She recalls being aware of her family’s concern about her weight from a young age.

[7:40] Susan recounts experiences of sexual abuse by her grandfather and how the lack of support or acknowledgment from her family contributed to her feelings of shame and isolation. Lisa and Susan discuss her early attempts at dieting, starting in seventh grade.

[25:16] Susan discusses using food as comfort during high school, leading to weight gain. Lisa and Susan reflect on dieting and the impact of starvation on weight gain, acknowledging both emotional eating and physical effects of dieting. Susan shares with Lisa the desire to fit in socially and be asked to dance, influenced by her mother’s comments. She discusses the impact of social expectations on her self-image and dieting habits.

[29:05] Susan recounts significant life events, including marriage, teaching, and family illnesses, highlighting resilience through personal and family health crises, including her son’s cancer and her own health struggles. Susan describes to Lisa how she used food, reading, and learning as coping mechanisms during stressful periods, emphasizing the struggle to manage weight amidst life’s challenges.

They discuss how the OOTC group coaching curriculum design brings together various teachings into a cohesive understanding. [1:14:56] Lisa and Susan concluded with a discussion about the practice of journal speak as essential for processing emotions. Susan also shares her gratitude to Lisa for holding a safe space for her through the interview and group coaching program.

22 Aug 2022Learning from Being Uncomfortable with Amanda00:57:39

As a child of divorce with an alcoholic father and an abusive mother, Amanda used food from an early age to find the comfort that her home life lacked. Chronic back pain eventually became intense enough that she was taking multiple days off in a row from work and led her to discover John Sarno and Nicole Sachs in the world of TMS study and recovery.

Topics include:

[2:39] The first decade or so of Amanda’s life. Realizing as an adult that your childhood wasn’t as “normal” as you thought it was and that you can now see how food became a source of safety and comfort for you.

[9:24] Becoming aware of her body in high school, growing curves, marriage and pregnancy, feeling like she wasn’t good enough as she gained weight over time. Digestive issues led her to attempt various elimination diets to identify the source.

[19:18] Back pain was forcing her to take weeks off from work but her insurance denied a claim for surgery. She discovered Dr. Sarno’s work on TMS and the work of Nicole Sachs and began the long journey of healing herself.

[31:52] Once the back pain was gone, Amanda was ready to work on the accompanying food issues and turned to Lisa. Working one on one as well as in the group, the differences between the two and the biggest lessons she took away from them.

[38:22] Examining your reasons for doing something, identifying predators and fear in your life. Honoring your journey, allowing yourself to be uncomfortable.

[51:33] Expressing yourself through various media, feeling things that are uncomfortable and learning how the brain tries to protect you from that. The magic of community and connection on the healing journey.

10 Jun 2024Losing 200+ pounds and Keeping It Off with Jon Gabriel01:00:57

Lisa sits down with the man, the myth, the legend, Jon Gabriel, founder and creator of the Gabriel Method. They discuss how this breathwork addresses mental, emotional, and physical health, offering sustainable and long-term well-being solutions.

Topics Include:

  • The Gabriel Method

  • Stress Reduction

  • Effective and Sustainable Weight Loss

  • Safety

[1:00] Lisa introduces her guest, Jon Gabriel, and shares her personal journey of how she met him and became a supporter of his work after initially being resistant to his message and how she knew she needed to work with him.

[5:00] Jon Gabriel shares the story about how so many people who are resistant to his work at first become fierce supporters, including several interviewers. Jon goes on to share how he eventually lost 220 pounds without dieting or forcing restriction but by eating healthier.

[9:00] Jon talks about his struggle with weight and his experience with various diets, including working face to face with Dr. Atkins.

[11:00] Jon explains the Gabriel Method, which focuses on getting the body to want to be thin by working with its survival programs rather than against them. This involves making the body feel safe, not forcing restriction, and how to turn off your fat programs.

[17:24] Jon discusses the concept of fat as a survival adaptation and how understanding this can help in creating a sustainable weight loss strategy. Jon contrasts traditional dieting, which often involves forced restriction, with his method that focuses on making the body feel safe and naturally reducing the desire to overeat. Jon and Lisa discuss how fat programs are inherited for survival, particularly in conditions of famine and cold and how our biology interprets different types of stress. Chronic low-grade stress favors fat retention, while acute stress favors being thin.

[22:24] Lisa shares her personal experience of losing 150 pounds through diet and exercise, and her initial skepticism towards the idea that diets don’t work. Lisa uses the analogy of holding a volleyball underwater to describe the temporary nature of weight loss through dieting and the challenge of maintaining it. Lisa and Jon talk about the importance of understanding the connection between mind and body in weight management, and how stress and mental state affect physical health. Jon shares a personal anecdote about working on Wall Street and gaining 200 pounds due to stress, contrasting with a colleague who lost weight under the same conditions.

[36:16] Jon talks about how he felt like he didn’t want to gain anymore weight and took a leap of faith and began his health journey with getting his sleep apnea addressed and real rest lowered his cortisol levels and how through that he lost 120 pounds without making any lifestyle changes.

[42:12] Jon talks about the effectiveness of visualization in weight loss, and how it helped him achieve his goals.

[56:53] Lisa and Jon emphasize that safety is the baseline for sustainable weight loss. The body needs to feel safe mentally, emotionally, spiritually, socially, and physically to lose weight effectively. Both Jon and Lisa discuss the importance of a daily meditation practice.

[1:00:00] Lisa and Jon close out the discussion with their excitement about seeing each other at the Gabriel Method Retreat at the Omega Institute and how to find Jon online: Jon Gabriel Instagram, The Gabriel Method Retreat at the Omega Institute, and The Gabriel Method website

01 Aug 2022Turning “I Can’t” Into “I Can” with Sherene01:16:58

Sherene has been a part of the group coaching program, as well as the alumni aftercare group. Today she shares with us her experience with multiple childhood moves, yo-yo dieting, body dysmorphia, and taking back the power to make decisions in her life.

Topics include:

[4:25] Sherene’s earliest memories about her body, experiencing a growing awareness of her body and shape. Learning how to be a human being and what society’s acceptable standards are. Feeling out of place as a tween following a big move to a rural public school.

[17:14] Becoming more aware of food as a pre-teen and teen. The way other people factor into our relationship with our body. Self-medicating by using food as a numbing agent.

[24:43] Expressing herself through artistic and creative outlets as a teenager but still feeling out of place. Falling in and out of various diets and health fads while watching her mom go through Weight Watchers. The impact body dysmorphia and perception has on what we experience as reality.

[33:45] Canceling plans and making choices based on how she felt about her body. The way that our brains tell us we can’t do something and takes away our power to make a choice based on what feels safe or unsafe. The difference between uncomfortable and unsafe and the ongoing daily practice of conscious awareness.

[41:53] Making the decision in her 40s to be more aware of how she feels and embrace the holistic mind-body-soul system. Asking ourselves how we really want our lives to be and beginning to move toward making that a reality.

[49:02] Looking for a spiritual solution, an initial interest in the Gabriel Method, and finding Lisa. Realizing that a diet wasn’t what she needed, it was a full holistic overhaul. Finding safety in the OOTC community, growing on every group call, and allowing herself to be more open.

[1:04:09] Sherene’s biggest takeaways from being in group. Being aware and allowing, letting go of our resistance to reality.

28 Nov 2022Real Time Heal with Abby00:49:43

Today’s episode is the first of its kind on the OOTC pod! Abby is a group coaching alumni who came in to do a one on one session to go deeper into some areas where she was still struggling. When we discovered how poignant the questions and topics she was bringing up were, we decided to hit record and let it happen so that you could experience this uncut conversation in real time with us.

Topics include:

[1:03] Diet police and anti-diet police. Not everything you do is a disorder. Allowing yourself to not eat foods that are triggers for you without turning it into a restrictive mindset. Understanding that everyone has a different experience and everyone is going to have different triggers and different roads to recovery.

[11:45] Learning to trust your body and your brain to make decisions for yourself, respecting and upholding our inner knowing. Finding safety around food in different ways. Feeling addicted versus forming healthy relationships around people, activities, and foods - avoiding extremes.

[21:07] Allowing yourself to find what works for you, rather than succumbing to the lies of both diet and anti-diet culture that ‘just doing it this way will work!’ Being the expert on your own body.

[29:01] Fears around losing weight, people’s reactions to you losing weight and the attention that often comes with that. Emotion and action, letting your brain learn unSAFE versus unCOMFORTABLE.

[38:19] Themes of recent conversations around body changes in puberty and the unpleasant attention that invited from friends, family, and strangers. The assumption that everyone is trying to lose weight. The importance of finding community, being understood, and being seen.

25 Oct 2021My Story: Part 2/200:52:52
Lisa continues and concludes her story. She shares how ultimately, her journey will help you, the listener, heal your own relationship to food, eating, body image, etc. and how this podcast will serve to lead you out of the cave. Topics: - Life after weight loss - How Lisa’s IBS led her closer to the mind-body connection - How Jon Gabriel and Nicole Sachs impacted Lisa’s healing journey and work - Maintaining Weight Loss - Speaking at the Omega Institute [2:09] Lisa explains what happened after her 150-pound weight loss, including the research she did around holistic, mind-body methods to health. She relied on the support of a therapist and nutritionist, and learned to stabilize her weight as well as her mental and emotional health [5:54] Lisa deals with one lingering issue, which would later be diagnosed as IBS, and tried tests, medications, many doctors, and different procedures, and no one could give her any answers until she was given a diagnosis of Post Infectious IBS (Presumably due to a bought of diarrhea in Ghana) [10:09] Lisa copes for years with her diagnosis of IBS and retreats back to her defense of retreat and denial, while underneath feeling very sad and scared. Though her entire life was being affected, she was still riding the high of her dramatic weight loss, including walking and even running comfortably, shopping with ease, and just generally fitting into the world around her [15:20] Lisa graduated from the University of Michigan, knowing she loved being in the gym and loved helping people. She decided to become a certified personal trainer, not dieting, focusing on mental health and stress reduction, and was amazed to see her weight stabilizing and finally felt an “effortlessness” around food and body [18:25] Lisa finds herself in a position where she is fully embodying mind-body health, felt she was really onto something, and knew it was becoming clear that food, dieting, and exercise could not heal emotional eating [20:14] Lisa attends a Jon Gabriel retreat at the Omega Institute in New York, and felt at home but out of place in such a spiritual place because at the time she was completely disconnected to anything that couldn’t be seen, touched, or proven with data [25:46] The following year Lisa speaks at the retreat and shares her success story from the lens of weight maintenance because she was beating the odds of someone who is defying the statistic that 98% of the people who go on a diet gain the weight back [27:00] In 2018, Lisa returns to speak at the Omega Institute and meets Nicole Sachs, who was also there to teach about how she helped thousands of people around the entire world heal from chronic pain, including IBS, and was hearing all she had to say until she suggested you could use journaling to cure chronic pain [32:30] Listening to Nicole, Lisa realizes that her inner work isn’t done despite maintaining her 150 pound weight loss. If we can accept that stress can cause something like a one time headache, why can’t we accept that stress can cause chronic pain? [37:15] While taking a new look at the onset of her IBS, Lisa thought back to Semester at Sea, where she was too preoccupied with food and eating to be the “life of the party” persona, and for the first time felt awake to her own anxiety, and also, for the first time, felt exposed to the world and saw poverty, illness, heartbreak, death, and struggle [43:19] Lisa begins doing Nicole’s work and realizes that everything she knew to be true around food and eating was also true around chronic pain, and understanding this work on a cognitive level- while still experiencing some skepticism around things like “drawing her pain” Resources: The Cure For Chronic Pain Podcast Become a Member: OutoftheCave.health IG: @Lisa.Schlosberg
02 Sep 2024Living the Life of a Modern Sage with Alex01:16:39

Lisa is joined by group coaching alum, Alex. This episode discusses the complex journey of addiction and recovery, emphasizing the importance of continuous self-awareness, community support, and emotional growth. It underscores that personal growth is an ongoing process without a final destination, requiring constant practice and self-compassion.

Topics Include:

  • Feelings of worthiness
  • Addiction and Dissociation
  • Relationship with Food and Recovery
  • Ongoing Practice of Self-Love

[1:07] Lisa introduces Alex, a group coaching alum, and Alex provides a brief background about herself, including her age, profession, and family.

[2:52] Alex discusses her early childhood, feeling like a misfit, receiving negative messages about her body, and experiencing dissociation as a coping mechanism. Alex talks about discovering boys and alcohol, getting kicked out of public high school, and finding a sense of belonging at a small private girls’ school. Alex describes her life after high school, including heavy drinking, drug use, and the impact of her father’s death and her own accident.

[18:17] Alex shares her experiences with various diets, over-exercising, and using laxatives as a means to control her weight. Alex talks about getting married, having a baby, and eventually getting sober while raising her child alone. Alex discusses her relapse after 16 years of sobriety, her obsessive exercising, and discovering the work of John Sarno and Nicole Sachs in 2020.

[24:51] Lisa and Alex explore the cognitive dissonance between wanting to be in addiction and wanting to be sober, noting that recovery can become a new form of addiction. Alex admits that much of their recovery efforts were performative, driven by how things looked rather than genuine feelings. Alex compares their experience with eating disorders to OCD, emphasizing the importance of gradual exposure therapy in recovery.

[29:22] Alex shares their experience with Overeaters Anonymous (OA), noting that it felt like another form of dieting and restriction. Lisa and Alex discuss the concept of powerlessness over substances, with Lisa disagreeing with the traditional OA view and Alex partially agreeing.

[42:19] Alex talks about using Internal Family Systems (IFS) to identify and accept different parts of themselves, including negative emotions like rage and despair. Lisa and Alex talk about the balance between codependency and hyper-independence, emphasizing the importance of healthy support systems.

[51:53] Lisa and Alex discuss how past experiences shape emotional reactions and the importance of distinguishing between discomfort and actual danger. Alex talks about dealing with multiple losses, including the death of their mother and a friend, and how it has impacted their emotional journey.

[1:03:17] Alex shares their positive experience with a group program, emphasizing the value of community and continuous learning. Alex discusses the challenges and empowerment of accepting an aging body and the desire to advocate for older adults.

[1:09:46] Alex emphasizes the importance of continuous practice and course correction in their emotional and spiritual journey. Lisa and Alex discuss that there is no final destination in personal growth and self-awareness. It’s an ongoing process. Lisa emphasizes the importance of continuous practice in aligning with oneself and embodying authenticity.

[1:15:05] Lisa and Alex close out this session by using the metaphor of gardening to describe personal growth, emphasizing the need for constant tending.

19 Aug 2024Out of the Cave Medical Care with Dr. Susan Caldwell01:32:54

Lisa sits down with primary care physician, Dr. Susan Caldwell. This episode discusses the importance of empathy, self-awareness, and a holistic approach in medical practice, particularly in treating weight and women’s health issues. Lisa and Susan discuss the need for understanding patients as whole individuals, addressing the root causes of health problems, and fostering supportive patient-doctor relationships.

Topics Include:

  • Holistic approach in medical practice
  • Empathy and self-awareness in medical practice
  • Patient-centered care and realistic health expectations
  • Food addiction and the importance of a balanced approach to health and weight loss

[1:09] Lisa introduces Susan, a primary care physician specializing in internal medicine and women’s reproductive health. Lisa shares that she became aware of Susan because Susan recommended the OOTC podcast to one of her patients.

[5:02] Lisa discusses the trauma and negative experiences many people, especially those in bigger bodies, face when visiting doctors. She emphasizes the importance of finding medical professionals who see patients as humans rather than just a set of data.

[7:07] Susan shares her journey from studying psychology to becoming a primary care physician. She talks about her initial focus on treating symptoms with medication and how she realized that this approach was not effective and missed the person behind the symptoms. Susan describes her journey of reconnecting with her faith and starting to pay more attention to her patients’ stories and needs. She began to see the importance of listening and understanding rather than just prescribing medication.

[17:31] Lisa and Susan discuss the psychological dynamics where patients see doctors as authority figures and how this can trigger feelings of powerlessness and inadequacy in doctors. They emphasize the need for doctors to understand and manage their own emotions. Susan discusses the importance of self-awareness and listening to one’s own body, which was neglected during medical training. Lisa highlights the contrasting approaches in training for medical professionals and therapists, where the emphasis is on self-awareness and emotional intelligence in therapy.

[39:11] Lisa and Susan discuss how societal expectations place doctors in a position of power, often leading to a disconnect between doctors and patients. Susan advocates for a holistic approach that considers the body, mind, and soul, rather than just treating physical symptoms.

[50:19] Lisa and Susan discuss the importance of community and support systems in helping patients heal and feel empowered. They talk about the importance of understanding patients as humans, not just data points, to foster real healing.

[1:04:30] Lisa asks Susan about the medical reason for losing weight. Susan shares that the body is not built to handle the extra weight and will eventually begin to experience issues. Lisa shares how Susan’s answer really resonates with her given her experience with stress fractures in her feet.

[1:22:25] Susan views medications like Ozempic as tools that should be used responsibly and emphasizes the importance of foundational health practices like diet and exercise. Susan stresses the need for individuals to be aware of their eating habits and overall health, rather than relying solely on medications.

[1:31:04] Lisa and Susan close with expressions of appreciation for the work they are both doing. Lisa talks about how she will definitely have Susan back to answer and address new questions.

01 Nov 2021The Fundamentals of Mind-Body Healing with Nicole Sachs, LCSW00:56:41

Nicole Sachs, LCSW shares her story and explains this work in the clearest of terms.

Topics:

  • Nicole Sachs, LCSW and “The Cure for Chronic Pain”
  • TMS and Chronic Pain Defined
  • Emotional Eating Non-judgmentally

[3:55] Nicole tells her story. At 19 her “back goes out” and she is diagnosed with an abnormality in her lower spine. The doctor warned her there would be no more long car rides, no more sports, and that it was very unlikely she would be able to have children (something she wanted more than anything in the world). She was told that without surgery, she would not live long past 40. Nicole headed back to college and began to live a life of chronic pain and chronic fear.

[8:43] Nicole becomes aware of the work of Dr. John Sarno, a revolutionary medical doctor, speaking about how a mind-body connection, our trauma, and the emotional world actually affect us physically. She began exploring case studies and decided to do a science experiment on herself. Wondering with curiosity in place of fear, “Is there more to this than I had known before?”

[11:30] Nicole describes freeing herself of chronic pain through Dr. Sarno’s work, JournalSpeak, and understanding the mind-body connection. It has been 20 years since she’s had back pain despite her scans looking exactly as they did when she was 19 years old. Nicole gave birth to 3 beautiful children. She is free.

[14:40] Nicole explains the connection between the emotional world and physical world as it pertains not only to chronic pain… and also emotional eating.

[17:48] Nicole touches on brain science and how our nervous system chooses chronic pain as an act of love.

[21:45] Lisa explains how her work and Nicole’s work are very much the same and how we are connected through human pain.

[25:45] Nicole explains how she created her brand and how she came up with “The Cure for Chronic Pain,” even though she believes it is truly, “The Cure for Everything,” and how chronic pain includes not only physical illness but also mental issues like anxiety and/or depression.

[30:09] Nicole says the pain is not in your head and is not your fault. Your nervous system is operating in a way to protect you.

[32:45] Nicole talks about the influence of Lisa’s work on her own relationship to emotional eating and body image, and how she can observe herself emotionally eating and invites herself to feel her feelings.

[34:15] Lisa shares how negative thoughts about her body were a distraction from grieving her father’s impending death.

[39:58] Nicole shares what Lisa believes to be a very important concept: “Life is a choice between what hurts and what hurts worse.”

[43:45] Lisa and Nicole share about their past and present relationship with emotional eating.

[48:13] Nicole gives a quick overview of her work and what it means to “get free.”

30 May 2022Out of the Cave and Into Your Power with Alison Midollo01:22:32

We are so excited to welcome back the incomparable Alison Midollo! One of Lisa’s closest friends and collaborators, Alison was on the OOTC pod back in December for the episode Inner Peace (check it out at https://anchor.fm/lisa-schlosberg/episodes/Inner-Peace-with-Alison-Midollo-e1bs785) and is here today to talk some more about the upcoming Out of the Cave and Into Your Power Retreat happening in San Diego CA at the end of September.

Topics include:

[1:55] Introductions and setting intentions for the pod - Balance and Spirituality.

[6:02] Balance versus taking things to extremes. Identifying yourself as only one thing can be harmful in many ways and restricts the possibilities and opportunities you have to grow and learn as a person. Perfectionism and people pleasing versus zen and zest.

[12:02] How acknowledging the separate parts of ourselves helps lead us to wholeness and balance. The ebb and flow of your unique gifts, letting yourself embrace that, and not forcing yourself to be one thing all the time are some of the most important things we can do for ourselves.

[17:23] What happens when all of our energy goes to consciously or unconsciously suppressing parts of ourselves. Food and eating is not the root cause, it’s this imbalance and misdirection of energy that needs to be healed in order to evolve and express ourselves fully.

[31:00] Lisa credits John Gabriel and the Gabriel Method as the beginning of her spiritual awakening. Moving from grasping desperately for control to acceptance and peace with life as it is.

[40:30] Needing to address more than just the inner child, embracing our past selves at every age. Inner resistance coming from feeling a lack of safety. Rachel Bell’s influence on Lisa and giving yourself permission to express parts of yourself you’ve hidden. Alison’s experience feeling forced to dim her natural light and positivity. Breaking out of the box or stepping out of the box that you and others may have put yourself in.

[56:42] Spirituality and spiritual awakening. Lisa’s journey into spirituality after connecting with Alison. Caroline Dewey’s definition of spirituality (which you’ll more of at the retreat in September!).

[1:08:03] How spirituality and connecting with your energetic self connects to struggles with weight and food. Letting yourself do the work through skepticism and practice love even if the spiritual language doesn’t resonate.

[1:12:13] Peace and safety are not dependent on weight, size, pain, accomplishments, etc. Showing up day after day exactly as you are and acknowledging that you still deserve and can feel peace and safety is a revolutionary act of self love. You will not always feel love and care and peace in every moment but that doesn’t mean that it’s not there for you regardless.

[9:00] Estelle talks about “little t,” and “big T,” traumas in her childhood home and how she found emotional eating at such a young age and how that spiraled a few years later into laxative abuse, binging, purging, and diet pills,

[11:53] After 6 months hospitalized for an eating disorder, Estelle explains how she really learned nothing because the root of the issue was never addressed

[27:00] How diet culture disconnects us from self and how true connection to self and others makes us feel full

[31:51] Lisa explains how Estelle’s experience of “feeling like she’s going to die,” when it comes to discomfort makes sense when we understand the brain science

[38:00] We don’t need advice or panic, we need to give ourselves permission to let feelings “kill us”

[43:00] Taking radical responsibility for yourself, your thoughts, and your healing

[53:20] Estelle talks about how she experienced some emotional eating during quarantine after completing group coaching and how it was much different than before because of profound self-love

[3:34] Nicole and Lisa discuss how chronic conditions like migraines, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue are linked to a dysregulated nervous system and repressed emotions. They examine how body image issues are seen as a form of perfectionism projected onto the physical body, which can be linked to repressed emotions and chronic conditions, as well. Nicole outlines a three-step process: believe, do the work, and practice patience and kindness to heal chronic conditions by addressing repressed emotions.

[11:45] Nicole discusses how chronic pain is often linked to repressed emotions and the nervous system’s response to perceived threats. The conversation emphasizes the importance of addressing these emotions to alleviate chronic symptoms. Lisa and Nicole explore how body image issues are tied to familiar and controllable thoughts, which the brain uses as a safety mechanism. They discuss the societal pressures and personal struggles related to body image.

[30:54] Nicole introduces the concept of ‘breakaway,’ which involves breaking free from old paradigms to live a more actualized life, beyond just managing chronic pain. Nicole acknowledges that some people may fear the open space that comes with healing and transformation, and emphasizes the importance of addressing these fears.

[36:46:04] Lisa discusses the fear of discovering life without chronic pain, while Nicole emphasizes that the real issue is an epidemic of fear, not pain. Nicole describes the healing process as taking small, manageable steps and not needing to figure everything out at once.

[38:57] Nicole] discusses the incentives for pre-ordering the book. Nicole highlights the importance of integrating mind-body practices with traditional medical treatments, such as in an upcoming study with breast cancer patients.

  • Raising Children Out of the Cave

[1:00] Lisa introduces Jade, mentioning her as a dedicated follower and fan. They discuss how Jade initially disliked Lisa's content but eventually became a fan. Lisa and Jade dive into Jade’s story, particularly her realization about being an emotional eater after listening to the podcast and following Lisa’s social media.

[3:26] Jade shares her early life experiences, including her parents’ separation, living in a small village in Mexico. Jade discusses how poverty shaped her childhood, and feeling like a burden to her father, experiencing anxiety during supermarket trips, and feeling guilty about the financial strain she perceived she was causing. She discusses how she was made to feel that her appetite was undesirable and something to be questioned.

[7:30] Jade shares her experience of sexual abuse during puberty and how her mother did not believe her because the abuser was financially supporting the family; how food became a source of comfort, especially through secret consumption of Snickers and Coca-Cola provided by the abuser.

[17:24] Jade describes the emotional impact of puberty, including dissociation, withdrawal, and the struggle with body image due to comments from others. She shares her struggle with body image, including avoiding mirrors and feeling like a ‘gross monster.’

[18:30] Lisa and Jade look deeper at how comments about eating habits during childhood can impact a child’s perception of food and self-worth. They explore how parents’ comments about their children’s eating habits can create feelings of shame, fear, and judgment, making food and eating feel unsafe.

[20:00] Jade and Lisa discuss how Jade is working to make her own child curious about food and how they feel after eating certain foods, like sugar. Then they continue to examine Jade's relationship with food and her body through the years.

[33:16] During her pregnancy at 33, Jade was hyper-focused on eating ‘good’ foods and maintaining a certain body image, even while preparing for childbirth. She shares her journey of embracing body positivity through photography, capturing postpartum bodies. She talks about her internal conflict of feeling like an ‘ugly piece of shit’ despite promoting body positivity and photographing other women.

[52:30] Jade describes her experiences with intuitive eating and intermittent fasting, and how she reintroduced fasting as a spiritual practice. Lisa and Jade examine the fear of hunger and healing that.

[1:09:08] Jade talks about how she navigates emotional eating by eating without shame and recognizing the need for comfort during exhaustion. Lisa and Jade both emphasize the importance of being kind to oneself and understanding the underlying emotions through practicing compassionate curiosity.

[1:19:42] Lisa and Jade close out the discussion by acknowledging that eating habits and body image perceptions go through different seasons and phases, and it’s important to honor each phase as part of the journey. Jade Beall Instagram, Jade Beall Website.

19 Sep 2022Turns Out I Have Feelings with Nate01:20:52

This week, Nate chats with Nate. Nate is an Out of the Cave group coaching alum, who is affectionately known as half of “Nelly,” as he and his wife, Kelly, went through the 14 week program together. Nate dreamed and planned very seriously to be an astronaut and fly fighter jets as a child, and recounts how that dream falling apart led to fifteen years of yo-yo dieting.

Topics include:

  • Using food and eating for comfort early on
  • Feeling disconnected to our own bodies
  • Swinging the pendulum from diet-culture to anti-diet culture to Out of the Cave
  • Using emotional solutions for emotional issues
  • Approaching our messy humanness with curiosity
  • Connecting with the inner child

[2:45] Nate recalls his early memories after his parents divorce, living with a single parent as an only childhood, self-esteem issues, being in counseling as a child, spending a lot of time on his own, learning to cook from watching Emeril, and how as a child he was able to eat intuitively and food and eating wasn’t an issue, but recalls early habits would go on to affect his habits around food later– all while feeling the pressure to be the “perfect kid”

[17:00] Nate is accepted into the Air Force Academy, where he is pushed past his limits in their “break you down to build you up” model, and his life was shattered when he found he not be physically able to be a pilot, and for the first time in his life, he was unsure about his future and faces unhappiness, he slowly starts to gain weight

[20:00] Nate joins a traveling theater company, working backstage and also meets Kelly and begins to gain weight rapidly, as he distracts himself with fun and food

[30:00] Nate attempts to “fix” his weight problem by joining a gym, working with a trainer, and following a meal plan, which was the beginning of his yo-yo-ing dieting, along with Kelly, that would last 15 years

[34:00] Nate works with a doctor and drops a tremendous amount of weight, and gets a job as a commercial airline pilot, within three years he gained all the weight back and then some, and he and his wife find the anti-diet movement and gain around 30 more pounds, and they decided as a couple that there had to be something in the middle

[38:00] Kelly and Nate join group coaching together, and he recalls his early mindset and how he came to the awakening that this is a lifelong process

[45:30] Nate discovers embraces his flawed humanness, learns how to identify and cope with feelings, and explains the origins of his fear of conflict and how he’s worked through that, using the tools he developed during group coaching

[1:00:00] Nate talks about the changes and progress he’s made around food and eating, hunger and fullness, and his mind-body connection after graduating group coaching, and what he is still faces and how he plans to address those obstacles in a way that feels safe

[1:10:00] Practicing self-compassion and letting the journey take time and connecting with the inner-child

06 Jan 2025Is There a Middle Ground? Using IFS to Navigate & Heal Polarizations Around Food with Manya Ronay01:18:11

Lisa is joined by Manya Ronay, a Level 3 Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner, Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®), and Food Addiction Recovery Advocate (FARA) living in Israel. She works at the intersection of physical health and emotional health, specializing in IFS for eating and mind-body healing. The interview explores the impact of ultra-processed foods on health, the complexities of food addiction versus intuitive eating, and critiques mainstream eating disorder treatments. It emphasizes holistic approaches, including IFS, for healing and empowerment.

Topics Include:

  • Diet Culture

  • Anti-Diet Culture

  • Food Addictions

  • Eating Disorders

  • IFS

[0:36] Lisa describes how she connected with Manya through Instagram, feeling a rare connection with someone like-minded. Manya shares that living in Israel during a war affects her nervous system, causing a shutdown stage, but she feels happy to be part of the podcast. She discusses her journey from conventional medicine to holistic practices after being diagnosed with POTS, leading her to explore food and lifestyle changes.

[4:29] Manya explains the concept of ultra-processed foods using the NOVA classification, highlighting their hyper-palatable nature and health impacts. Manya describes her transition to using IFS in her practice, finding it a perfect model for understanding internal and external dynamics in nutrition.

[10:11] Manya discusses how changing her diet helped alleviate severe gastrointestinal symptoms and was a step towards overall healing, including acupuncture and mind-body healing. Manya explains the negative health impacts of ultra-processed foods, linking them to chronic diseases and shorter lifespans, and highlights the high percentage of such foods in typical diets. Manya references Dr. Chris Palmer’s work linking ultra-processed foods to mental health issues by affecting mitochondria and energy production in cells.

[16:59] Manya shares insights from working with a food addiction recovery group, noting that ultra-processed foods can be addictive, similar to substances like alcohol. Lisa examines intuitive eating, suggesting it works for those affected by diet culture but not for those using food to cope with trauma, as it doesn’t address underlying emotional issues.

[33:01] Lisa discusses mainstream eating disorder treatment for being dismissive and leading to high relapse rates. Manya agrees, noting that both eating disorder and food addiction treatments often involve ignoring or fighting internal voices, which can be harmful. Lisa explains the challenges of balancing intuitive eating with health priorities, highlighting a client’s struggle with internal polarization between eating freely and prioritizing health.

[34:29] Lisa and Manya discuss using IFS to address eating issues by acknowledging and listening to different internal voices, promoting a holistic and non-judgmental approach to healing. Manya emphasizes the importance of empowerment and choice in healing, suggesting that feeling in control and having options can contribute significantly to recovery.

[40:52] Manya shares the IFS eating triangle and how it can go in multiple directions, and the bi-directional arrows represent different experiences of individuals. The roles of firefighters and managers in IFS are not always clear-cut. Eating can be a manager role if it is preemptive, showing the model’s imperfections. Intuitive eating and food addiction can be mapped on the same triangle, with intuitive eating going counterclockwise and food addiction clockwise.

[1:06:00] Manya draws parallels between mind-body practices and intuitive eating, highlighting how both can ignore the biological effects of food. They emphasize the importance of understanding how food affects the body beyond just emotional or psychological aspects.

[1:07:39] Lisa reflects on the pendulum swing between diet culture and anti-diet culture, advocating for a balanced approach that considers both intuitive eating and nutritional health. Manya emphasizes that healing and taking care of one’s body is a lifelong journey, not a quick fix. They discuss the importance of continuously attending to one’s health and well-being.

Reclaiming Peace With Food Retreat at the Omega Institute - September 7-12, 2025

25 Apr 2022Love and Fear (In Our Relationship with Food)01:06:01

We have to eat food every day in order to provide our body the nourishment it needs to keep us alive. But have we thought about the emotions we encounter when we provide that nourishment?

Topics include:

[3:56] How do we define health and what is holistic health? Physical health is only one aspect of holistic health, which includes mental, emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental health in addition to our physical bodies.

[6:14] The Weight vs Health Venn diagram (available at www.outofthecave.health/downloads). There are things that can help you reach a weight goal but are not a positive influence on our holistic health and vice versa, but the intersection between these two areas is where the magic happens.

[14:30] Things that contribute to our mental, emotional, spiritual health but not necessarily our physical health may not help us lose weight in an acute way but will absolutely contribute to making weight loss sustainable and healthy because we allow ourselves to have what we want.

[18:47] When we don’t allow certain foods, the brain learns that those things aren’t safe. But even if it doesn’t serve the body (ice cream, cake, doritos, etc), it could be serving a very different but no less vital aspect of our holistic health.

[22:08] Salads and the intersection of the Venn diagram. If you eat a salad because you hate what you look like, you’re taking a very healthy food and creating a very unhealthy experience.

[27:04] Cardio has such an intense association with weight and weight loss. But if we are doing it because we hate our body and want it to change, we will be miserable the entire time and hate ourselves even more during and after it. But by creating an energy of love and appreciation for what our body is capable of doing and the joy of movement, we will be uplifted and energized every time we step off of the treadmill.

[31:40] How we can reclaim our power and healthy behaviors that will serve us by being aware of our mindset.

[39:51] Actions speak louder than words, but energy speaks louder than actions. If we’re looking for true health and sustainability, we need to be mindful of the energy we’re using when we exercise, when we cook, when we order food out, because it impacts our lives in so many unanticipated ways. But how do we know if we’re coming from a place of love or a place of fear?

[45:19] No one else can tell you if your behavior is healthy (coming from a place of love) or not based off of mere observation. Only by being present in the moment and in our bodies can we be aware of our true intentions.

04 Jul 2022Relapse and Recovery Pt. 200:57:11

THANK YOU to every single person who took the time to listen to last week’s pod. We received more feedback than ever before, and your texts, emails, comments, and DMs made a huge impression. Sometimes the most important thing is just knowing that you’re not alone, and that your struggle is echoed by so many others around the world. Thank you so much for all your support and kindness, and I hope that you also feel all of the love that our community is putting out into the world. ❤️

Today Lisa continues the conversation about relapse and recovery and shares the moments in her life that taught her the greatest lessons.

Topics include:

[6:34] Turning 25 the month after Lisa’s dad passed and how she learned to survive without him. How one moment showed her that she could survive feeling so much emotion that she thought she would die.

[17:00] Working with similar deep emotion and trauma with another coach. The way her body tried to distract her from the feelings by being physically cold, and how accepting that physical sensation opened up the emotional sensations.

[23:30] How do we not get distracted by body image or weight gain or food when the emotional issue is the true source? Recognizing what your body or mind needs in order to express and release the emotions you’re holding onto.

[31:05] Getting to the root of our conditioning - feeling happy or feeling comfortable allllll the time is not a realistic expectation for ourselves and it’s not what life is like. Getting into our bodies and into stillness to understand what those feelings are trying to tell us.

[41:00] Even as a child, Lisa didn’t feel like an emotional eater - eating in response to feeling emotions. Her emotional eating was preemptive, helping her ignore that the feelings were happening at all. This can be food, work, exercise, anything that we can focus on that isn’t our emotions.

[45:23] The “did do” vs “didn’t do” list. The temptation to return to old habits and disordered eating.

16 May 2022Diet Culture, TMS, and Moving Through Fear with Amanda G01:00:11

Former client Amanda joins Lisa to talk about the mind-body connection, chronic pain, and how moving through your fear can open up a whole new world of possibilities and accomplishments.

Topics include:

[1:35] As a child of divorce, Amanda was faced with two radically different systems when she ate with her mom versus eating with her dad.  A lack of stability and peace can have massive effects on our inner dialogue and beliefs about food, about what is healthy and safe or even just what is ‘normal.’

[16:18] Even with multiple different diets and regular exercise, nothing Amanda was doing addressed the emotional issues that were the root of her struggles with food. She watched her weight fluctuate wildly and couldn’t seem to get it under control.

[25:34] Finding Lisa and beginning their work together, understanding the importance of the mind-body connection in our relationship with food and our bodies. After spending so much money on programs and nutritionists, what made Lisa’s work different?

[35:20] The journey from being in conflict with food and with your own brain and emotions to being kinder and gentler to yourself and others.  Embracing our own ‘ugliness’ or shadow self, things like jealousy and anger, to learn to understand those emotions and accept those parts of ourselves.

[40:07] Everything you want is on the other side of fear. Getting through the resistance to own your power is the only way we can make a change when what we’ve been doing all along just isn’t working for us anymore.

[51:10] Eating intuitively and what it really means. By building a stronger relationship with our body, we can tell when we really feel hungry and when we’re using food to distract ourselves from an uncomfortable feeling or emotion.

25 Jul 2022Your Body Is Your Friend with Ilona01:10:42

Ilona found Lisa through the Omega Institute and was so inspired by her journey that she joined the Out of the Cave team after going through group coaching! Today she shares her experience of growing up feeling completely disconnected and dissociated from her body as a result of trauma. Ilona and Lisa discuss when weight loss feels unsafe, the impact of trauma in our relationships with food and our bodies, and allowing yourself to speak your truth.

Topics include:

[5:40] Food as comfort from a very young age. Going with her mom to Weight Watchers around 7 or 8, personal perceptions of weight versus looking back at pictures with a more realistic mindset. Growing into a hyperawareness of body image during the normal changes that come with puberty and adolescence. “Fat is safe” as a response to trauma.

[13:29] “This is my body and we’re not friends.” Weight loss felt unsafe when it did occur, such as experiencing unwanted attention from a male coworker. Living in your head instead of living in your body - that sense of disconnect and dissociation from your physical self.

[22:40] The impact of trauma on our relationships with our selves and our bodies. Dissociating as a form of self protection.

[27:46] Discovering John Gabriel and the Gabriel Method, eventually leading her to connect with Lisa. Coming home fired up and ready to make the changes and the risk of immediate burnout from making too many changes at once.

[38:22] Joining group coaching, finding connection and support through shared trauma in food. The nerves and anxiety of wanting to share but holding back, concerned about how your authentic self and truth might be received by others. Moving into a space where she could allow herself to dress her body in bright colors and styles she wouldn’t have worn before.

[48:12] Embodiment and connection with others in our journey toward safety. Accepting your current body the way it is. The exhaustion of experiencing emotions and allowing yourself to seek refuge in friendship.

[57:51] Validating your own frustration about a lot of the unhelpful advice about dieting and losing weight from people who don’t understand that it’s not about food. Understanding that it’s about emotional progress, not about the number on the scale or the measurements of your body.

11 Mar 2024Navigating the Human Experience and Recovery with Muna01:49:33

Join Lisa as she talks to Out of the Cave group coaching alum, Muna. Topics include: Muna's journey from childhood to adolescence, exploring her evolving relationship with food, body image, cultural influences, and the change in family dynamics. The conversation continues as Muna describes her experiences with disordered eating, specifically bingeing, purging, and later developing a restrictive relationship with food, intertwined with addictive marijuana use. Muna describes how a mountain biking accident led to a period of grief and loss of identity, triggering binge eating as a coping mechanism. This behavior persisted into early adulthood, alongside struggles with depression and insomnia. Muna talks about finding relief from insomnia through marijuana use, which then evolved into an addictive coping mechanism. Muna describes receiving praise for weight loss, leading to a restrictive relationship with food out of fear of losing attention gained from weight loss. Muna recalls how this cycle persisted for decades, and how even though she was maintaining a successful outward appearance, she was struggling internally with disordered eating and addiction. Muna discusses how she experienced addiction transfer and cross addiction, moving from one addictive behavior to another without addressing the underlying issues. Lisa and Muna continue the discussion with Muna’s relapse during the pandemic and her new road to recovery. Muna discusses the significance of grief work in her personal growth and recovery and how it is an essential aspect of healing. Muna also shares free recovery resources. Lisa and Muna wrap up the conversation with a discussion of the importance of community and how it makes a difference in recovery and how the OOTC group coaching program helped bring that to her.

26 Sep 2022It's Not About the Food with Abby01:23:47

Lisa speaks with group coaching alum, Abby. Abby reflects on how normalized and unquestioned toxic fitness and diet culture was in the 80s and 90s, as well as the mental impact of constantly feeling like a failure when the newest plan, diet, or program didn’t end her struggles around food and eating for good. She shares how she used food emotionally and her experience swinging from diet culture to anti-diet culture, to ultimately landing in Out of the Cave’s 14 week group coaching program.

Topics Include:

  • Toxic diet and fitness culture of the 80s and 90s
  • The mental and emotional impact of years of dieting
  • Dieting addiction and the excitement around making a new “plan,” and believing this time it will be different
  • Going from diet culture, to anti-diet culture, to Out of the Cave
  • Anxiety, guilt, and shame around parenting
  • The power of being present

[3:00] Abby recalls dieting with her mother at around 8 years old, after finding comfort in food, while her parents worked through their contentious on and off again relationship, being a plus sized child, and 80s diet culture

[11:30] Abby talks about feeling guilt and shame about food and her body and even so, didn’t believe she “had a problem,” but, in fact, she was the problem

[20:00] Abby reflects on the emotional experience of always dieting and giving so much attention to her size during all her school age years

[30:00] Abby moves to New Orleans, takes a stressful job, and indulges in the drinking and food scene, and for the first time in her life put on a significant amount of weight and begins trying to out diet her emotional eating

[36:00] Abby is diagnosed with Psuedotumor Cerebri (a pseudo brain tumor) and is prescribed weight loss

[40:00] Abby starts to become aware of emotional eating and her weight continues to yo-yo during her 20s and 30s, loses her home and job during Hurricane Katrina, and divorces her first husband

[45:00] Abby has two children and for the first time dieting wasn’t working, not even short term, and in her frustration finds the anti-diet movement and also winds up “failing” and believing something is wrong with her

[56:00] Abby finds Lisa and joins Out of the Cave group coaching and learns that unlike both diet culture and anti-diet, there is no promise to ever be “done”

[1:00:00] Abby reflects on her experience during her 14 weeks group coaching and shares how her biggest changes came after graduation, and how the work expanded so much further than food, eating, and body image

08 Aug 2022"Intuitive Eating"01:17:19

At long last, a highly requested topic is discussed on the Out of the Cave pod! This week Lisa talks about intuitive eating and compares the principles set forth in the book of the same title by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch with the idea of truly intuitive, instinctual eating and understanding of yourself as a spiritual being in a physical body.

Topics include:

[4:06] Belief systems in relation to food and our body. The two different kinds of “intuitive eating” and what it can really mean for you, your body, and your relationship with food. Who it works for and who it doesn’t (and why you are one or the other).

[14:31] The challenge of intuitive eating when it’s not just about getting out of diet culture, it’s about the emotional reliance on and addiction to food. The relationship between overeating and restricting (whether mentally or physically).

[28:29] Feelings and trauma are held inside our body. The importance of creating safety in order to achieve embodiment. Understanding the entanglement of the emotional and the physical.

[34:41] All foods have equal moral value. There is still varying nutritional and neurobiological value, but it’s not about shame vs pride, good vs bad, safety vs danger.

[46:12] Forming realistic expectations around the presence food will have in our life. Digging deeper into the goal that so many people start with that is not wanting to think about food ever.

[54:42] The way intuitive eating needs to be mindful of all the different aspects of our selves. The difference between trusting yourself and knowing yourself.

[1:02:18] Authenticity vs attachment, our true self in all its complicated and emotional glory. Embracing the deeper levels of understanding ourselves. Going deeper than just eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full.

[1:11:36] Outsourcing to your higher self. Letting all the parts of yourself say their piece and then making the decision that aligns with the kind of person you want to be.
