31 Dec 2020 | Episode 47: Scrooged | 01:17:57
Welcome back, folks! We may have missed Christmas, but as this week's film reminds us, it's never too late. Round up some leftover wassail, put on your new fuzzy slippers, and join us as we break down the soundtrack to Richard Donner's 1988 "Christmas Carol" riff Scrooged! Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a jaded TV executive hellbent on producing the most tasteless Dickens adaptation ever seen. But he's soon visited by three spirits... You know how this one goes. The soundtrack is not your traditional Christmas album. We get Natalie Cole and Miles Davis putting their spin on a couple holiday standards, but we also get wannabe holiday jams from Dan Hartman, Robbie Robertson and The New Voices of Freedom. And of course, there's the inescapable theme song from Annie Lennox and Al Green! SHOW NOTES:

05 May 2022 | Episode 72: Orange County | 01:44:49
School's out for summer and it's time to start thinking about college... This week's film, Orange County, is all about two things: One kid's obsessive mission to get into Stanford University, and the bright and sunny atmosphere of early-2000s SoCal pop-punk! The soundtrack brings us radio singles from The Offspring and Foo Fighters (RIP Taylor Hawkins), as well as classic tracks from Californians Brian Wilson, Social Distortion, Phantom Planet, and... Yeah I guess we'll have to talk about Crazy Town too. What this episode is really about is a chance for our hosts to reminisce about their high school careers, the things that pushed them to become writers, and the yearning for something greater than themselves. That's something we can all relate to, right? SHOW NOTES:

08 Dec 2022 | Episode 82: Gremlins | 01:07:21
This podcast has been overrun by gremlins! We were supposed to do a Thanksgiving episode on Planes Trains & Automobiles, but the powers that be said, "No, you're doing Gremlins." Those powers may or may not be gremlins. (Send help!) Anyway, Gremlins has been described as It's A Wonderful Life by way of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and while that thematic well runs deep, the film is mostly concerned with lots and lots of puppet mayhem! The soundtrack album is short, but features some strange choices, including tracks from Peter Gabriel, Quarterflash and Michael Sembello. We'll also discuss a few of the holiday needledrops, which have become classic scenes in their own right. So grab a glass of egg nog and join us for the wild ride that is Gremlins! 10 Mar 2022 | Episode 70: The Shagadelic World of Austin Powers | 01:27:18
One good Mike Myers turn deserves another, right? How about three? This week we're tackling all three Austin Powers soundtracks! From lounge revival kick of International Man of Mystery, to the pop phenomenon The Spy Who Shagged Me and finally to the 70s brand extension of Goldmember, we have a LOT of ground to cover on this episode. Burt Bacharach and Susanna Hoffs are two of this episode's key players. We'll hear from them several times. But not to be outdone, we've got bangers from Madonna, The Cardigans, The Lightning Seeds, They Might Be Giants, and more! And no conversation of Austin Powers would be complete without Quincy Jones' iconic "Soul Bossa Nova"! The series spans 1997 to 2002, five short years in which the alt rock scene collapsed and made way for hip-hop. So put on your velvet suits and mix up some martinis, baby! This episode's gonna get groovy! SHOW NOTES:

10 Jan 2020 | Episode 27: UHF | 01:27:42
Happy New Year, party pals! This week, Discord & Rhyme co-host and Weird Al Superfan Rich Bunnell joins us to discuss the soundtrack to Weird Al Yankovic's UHF! Released in the summer of 1989, UHF got lost in the shuffle of one of the biggest blockbuster seasons ever. The film may have been overshadowed by the likes of Batman and Indiana Jones, but time has been kind to UHF. Many today consider it a cult classic, and also one of the stranger albums in Weird Al's catalog. In addition to the songs from the film, we also have tunes about classic TV shows, the requisite polka medley, and also one of the greatest odes to Americana ever written. It's true! So fix yourself a twinkie weiner sandwich, crank up the volume and yank off the knob as we dig into everything U-62 has to offer!

07 Aug 2020 | Episode 39: Dick Tracy | 01:38:54
Calling all listeners! This week on the podcast, we're discussing the soundtrack to 1990's Dick Tracy! This was Disney's attempt to cash in on the sudden phenomenon that was Tim Burton's Batman. To do that, they hired Warren Beatty, Madonna and Al Pacino to bring the 1930s crimestopper comic to life. The result is...bizarre, to say the least. But like Batman, Dick Tracy was a marketing bonanza. There were toys, comics, video games, and THREE soundtrack albums! Not only did we get an entire album of new material from Madonna and Stephen Sondheim, we also got a Danny Elfman score and an OST compilation of snappy 1930s soundalikes full of pep, vim and verve! And, just for good measure, Ice-T shows up to explain the plot to us in rap form! What more could you possibly want??? SHOW NOTES:

21 Jul 2023 | Episode 89: Coneheads | 01:12:30
Greetings bluntskulls! On this episode we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Coneheads! Wayne's World proved there was a market for SNL comedies in the 90s, so naturally here's a movie based on the Coneheads, space aliens from the planet Remulak just trying to fit in among regular humans. It's basically an excuse for Dan Aykroyd to be a big weirdo for 90 minutes. And the soundtrack is equally weird. We've got a handful of really great, classic tracks (including an inexplicable hit single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), a couple of really great cover songs, as well as one of the worst cover songs we have ever covered on this show. And, of course, Dan Aykroyd has to have a song too. A land of contrasts, this album! SHOW NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE:

27 Oct 2022 | Episode 80: Dinosaurs, ”Big Songs” | 01:09:18
This week we're dipping back into the world of TV. Why, you ask? Because we can do whatever we want! Only 90s Kids may remember the phenomenon known as Dinosaurs, an ABC sitcom that ran from 1991 to 1995 and followed the adventures of dinosaur Earl Sinclair and his prehistoric family. Produced by the Jim Henson company, Dinosaurs was not only a marvel of live-action puppetry, but also just some damn funny television. And in 1992, they produced the album "Big Songs". You'd think this would be a compilation of songs from the show, right? Wrong! This album features twelve tracks recorded by the show's cast exclusively for the album. And most surprising of all, many of the songs are quite good! Join us as we dive in! SHOW NOTES:

12 Mar 2020 | Episode 30: 90s Soundtrack Covers | 01:09:45
And we're back! On this episode, we bring you a collection of cover songs featured in 90s movie soundtracks! The 90s were a big decade for people deciding it would be fun to take classic songs, record their own versions, and slap them on movies that absolutely did not need them. Sometimes they're fantastic! But then sometimes they're absolutely the worst. Our list this week brings you everything from White Zombie covering KC and the Sunshine Band to one of the most beautiful Beatles covers ever recorded, and there's a whooole lot going on in between! This week, Joe has been left to his own devices, so he wrangled his Christmas Creeps co-host Johnny-5 to discuss the biggest video-game-movie soundtrack they could find: MORTAL KOMBAT! This album landed square in the middle of the 90s, where new age, techno and heavy metal were all having kind of a moment. The album goes about half-and-half on the techno and metal, featuring such artists as KMFDM, Orbital, Gravity Kills, Geezer Butler and more! SHOW NOTES:

08 Apr 2021 | Episode 52: Empire Records | 01:48:09
It's Rex Manning Day here at the OST Party, so this week we're joined by Johnny-5 from the Christmas Creeps podcast to discuss the soundtrack to Empire Records! In the grand tradition of 90s hangout comedies like Clerks and Dazed and Confused, this film chronicles a day in the life of a record store full of hormonal teens. Whether you love it or not entirely depends on if you saw this film as a hormonal teen... This album comes from that moment in time when grunge was on the decline and a whole truckload of college rock and jangle pop acts swooped in to fill the void. Our much-discussed Gin Blossoms finally make an appearance on the show! We also get tracks from Edwyn Collins, The Cranberries, Better Than Ezra, Toad The Wet Sprocket, and more! SHOW NOTES:

20 Aug 2020 | Episode 40: Dispatches from Cartoon Planet | 01:16:57
This week we're taking a break from Hellworld 2020 and returning to the comedy albums of our youth. Specifically, we're discussing Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Que and Space Ghost's Surf & Turf, the two soundtrack albums from Cartoon Network's Cartoon Planet. For the unfamiliar, Cartoon Planet was the sister show to Space Ghost Coast to Coast, in which Space Ghost and his pals Brak and Zorak sing silly songs, perform comedy skits and just generally be goofballs. If you were young in the mid-to-late 90s, you probably stumbled across this show late at night and wondered what the hell you were watching. On this episode, we cherrypick a few favorites from these albums, which is no small feat. Both albums together feature nearly fifty songs, so we're only scratching the surface! Believe it, buddy! On this episode we go back to the 90s, an era when studios had no problem grabbing any old comic book and turning it into the craziest movie you've ever seen. Case in point: Tank Girl! In a future wasteland where water is worth more than gold, Lori Petty teams up with Naomi Watts to steal a tank, befriend some kangaroo people, and save the world from a robot-armed Malcolm McDowell. 18 Aug 2023 | Episode 90: Remembering Pee-wee Herman | 01:15:38
This week we mourn the passing of the incomparable Paul Reubens. His most famous creation, Pee-wee Herman, taught kids of all stripes that there's beauty in the weird and kitschy parts of the world, and that just because we grow up doesn't mean we have to stop being silly. And throughout his career, Reubens incorporated lots of music into the Pee-wee persona. So on this episode we'll take you through the musical history of Pee-wee Herman. We'll start with his 1981 stage show, dig into his three feature films, and highlight some of the strange places Pee-wee has popped up along the way. 18 Nov 2022 | Episode 81: Hot Fuzz | 01:28:18
We're returning to the world of Edgar Wright this week with the soundtrack to Hot Fuzz! Wright has a reputation for movie soundtracks that are impeccably curated, and Hot Fuzz is no different. The story of The Only Good Cop In England solving a string of murders in the small village of Sandford finds Wright leaning heavily on classic rock tunes from every era. The film is an absolute riot, but the soundtrack is equally impressive. Sporting tracks from classic acts The Kinks, The Troggs, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but also more modern artists such as The Fratellis, Supergrass and Eels. So strap on your kevlar, water the peace lily and join us down at the pub for a little Hot Fuzz!

Tis the season for proms and high school reunions, so what better time to revisit the 1997 yearbook flashback Romy & Michele's High School Reunion? Just like The Wedding Singer, this album is loaded up with more 80s pop staples than we can count. (Well, there's only eleven songs on the album, but you know what I mean.) We've got Tears for Fears, The Vapors, Culture Club, and three—count 'em!—three appearances from The Go-Gos and Belinda Carlisle. And this isn't even the only soundtrack that came from this film! Which songs belong on this soundtrack? Which ones feel extremely out of place? And which ones trigger long lost memories best left on the cutting room floor? 29 Sep 2022 | Episode 79: O Brother, Where Art Thou? | 01:46:03
Are you ready to get real old-timey? This week we discuss the folk and bluegrass revival of O Brother, Where Art Thou? Loosely based on "The Odyssey", Joel and Ethan Coen pulled together an all-star lineup of country musicians to score this wacky road trip through Depression-era Mississippi. The film is a hoot, but the soundtrack was a sensation. The album hit #1 on the charts over a year after its release, and went on to sell 8 million copies. "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" and "O Death" won all the awards, but the real standouts on this album come from Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, The Whites, and more! So join us as we dig deep into the history of American folk music. This episode's an odyssey all on its own! SHOW NOTES:

13 May 2021 | Episode 54: Me, Myself & Irene | 01:31:01
We've been threatening to do this for a while, and now it's finally here. This week we're discussing the soundtrack to 2000's Me, Myself & Irene. If you're not familiar, it's the film that closed out Jim Carrey's run of blockbuster 90s comedies with a resounding thud. Carrey plays Charlie, a mild-mannered cop with a split personality. He also plays Hank, Charlie's deranged alter ego. Renee Zellweger is here as well. The rest really isn't important. And the soundtrack is equally split down the middle. Half the album's songs are your usual suspects of late-90s radio rock staples. The other half is a bizarre collection of Steely Dan songs covered by modern artists such as Wilco, Ivy, Ben Folds Five, and Smash Mouth. Yes, Smash Mouth is back and they're doing Steely Dan. What did we ever do to deserve this? SHOW NOTES:

No movie put a stamp on the mid-90s quite like Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Loosely adapted from Jane Austen's "Emma", Clueless follows a year in the life of Beverly Hills teen Cher as she plays matchmaker to teacher and student alike (but not, like, at the same time). And the soundtrack is the rare album that actually helps tell the story. With tracks from 90s mainstays Luscious Jackson, Coolio, Cracker, Smoking Popes and more, the Clueless soundtrack is full of angst, social satire, and just some really solid tunes. It's a film near and dear to Joe's strange, twisted heart! Bogus Journey is a snapshot of the moment when hair metal acts like Winger and Neverland began to fall out of favor as alt-rock acts like Primus and Faith No More began to hit the mainstream. Landing just before Nirvana's "Nevermind," it was a musical changing of the guard, and the blending of the two works well for the film's darker tone. And to top it off, we've got epic riffs from Steve Vai, funky metal tracks from King's X and Ritchie Kotzen, and KISS doing a fittingly reverent cover of Argent's "God Gave Rock & Roll To You". Come join us and party on, dudes! SHOW NOTES:

This week we pay tribute to the dearly departed Ray Liotta with his first feature film, Jonathan Demme's Something Wild! It's hard to pin down exactly what this film is. Is it a road trip comedy? Is it a romantic comedy? Is it a chase thriller? Instead, it somehow manages to be all of those things. It's extremely entertaining! As for the soundtrack, we'll talk about a couple of the Talking Heads flying solo, we'll discuss the film's fascination with reggae and afrobeat, and we'll even reconnect with podcast favorites New Order and Oingo Boingo! So fasten your seatbelts, because you're in for Something Wild! SHOW NOTES:

29 Oct 2020 | Episode 44: Hobgoblins | 01:01:03
Happy Halloween, everybody! It's time to party down with another one of Libby's favorite wackadoo cult classics. It's Hobgoblins! It's a film that looks an awful lot like Gremlins or Critters, but has its own set of tricks up its sleeve. Famously one of the worst films ever covered on "Mystery Science Theater 3000", Hobgoblins features a soundtrack by post-punk band The Fontanelles. The band also appears in the film, playing the song "Kiss Kicker 99" to a room of roughly six people. In this episode we break down the Fontanelles' soundtrack, talk about some of our favorite MST3K bits, and ponder whether or not Hobgoblins inspired some classic 90s cartoons. Hey, maybe it did, maybe it didn't. Anywhoo, come join the party! SHOW NOTES:

19 Jan 2024 | Episode 93: FM | 01:51:12
We're ringing in the new year with a film we've been wanting to cover for a long time. It's the 1978 cult film FM, about a Los Angeles radio station fighting back against The Man with some of the coolest rock jams of the 70s. Or at least, that's what the movie is supposed to be about. Mostly it's an excuse for Martin Mull to ham things up while they shoot a Linda Ronstadt concert. And maybe we'll get celebrity cameos from Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon along the way. It's barely a movie, and not even a good one at that. Really though, FM is more famous for its soundtrack album, which is absolutely STACKED with some of the top rock hits of the era. We get two cuts from Steely Dan, including that excellent title track, as well as songs from Bob Seger, Boston, Foreigner, Boz Scaggs, and a whooole lot more! So put on your denim jackets and let's rock & roll! SHOW NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE:

It's wall to wall hair metal bands in a stiff competition to see who could sound the most like Van Halen. We've got Extreme, Shark Island, Astral Crown, Tora Tora, Tower Pool, and more! This week we return to our series on the Farrelly Bros with the soundtrack to their 1998 smash hit There's Something About Mary! It's a big, bawdy grossout comedy masquerading as a rom-com, with lots of outdated gags and a mean streak a mile wide. It's also still holds up surprisingly well, with a soundtrack to match. On this episode we get into artists such as Joe Jackson, The Push Stars, The Lemonheads, Ivy, The Dandy Warhols, and more! And yes, we discuss that song. You know the one. 22 Oct 2020 | Episode 43: The Karate Kid | 01:25:45
Seems like everyone is raving about the Cobra Kai series right now, so what better time to jump waaay back to 1984 and discuss the original? It's The Karate Kid this week on The OST Party! This one is a personal favorite of Joe's, and we get into a lot of why this film still works so well some 36 years later. And as popular as the film is, you'd think the soundtrack would be wall to wall bangers, right? Well, aside from Joe Esposito's "You're The Best", this soundtrack is surprisingly...dull. You probably know "You're The Best" was rejected from Rocky III in favor of Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger". But did you know Survivor has a song on this album too? What if we told you theirs is the theme song for the movie??? Yeah, it's ridiculous. And we'll tell you all about it! SHOW NOTES:

It's been 25 years since The X-Files jumped to the big screen! The first of two features based on the show, Fight The Future is The X-Files as a big-budget summer blockbuster. There's alien conspiracies, explosions, races through cornfields, killer bees for some reason... There's a lot to unpack with this film. And naturally, it came with a pretty stellar soundtrack. The usual suspects of mid-90s rock are all here, including Foo Fighters, Tonic, Better Than Ezra, Ween, and more! We even get a couple cover tunes, courtesy of X and Filter which, honestly, the less said about that one the better... 23 Jan 2020 | Episode 28: Dumb and Dumber | 01:18:46
Saddle up, partners! This week we're piling into the old sheepdog-mobile as we discuss the soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber! 1994 was Jim Carrey's breakout year, and this film solidified him as a comedy force to be reckoned with. It's also wildly problematic and many of the jokes have not aged well. C'est la vie. However... The soundtrack to Dumb and Dumber is secretly brilliant! It features an all-time classic cover from Crash Test Dummies, as well as some true jangle-pop bangers from Pete Droge, The Sons and The Gigolo Aunts. We've also got Echobelly, The Proclaimers, and whatever the hell it is Green Jelly thinks they're doing... It's another fascinating snapshot of the rock-pop landscape of the mid-nineties. 02 Feb 2023 | Episode 84: Blast from the Past | 01:34:47
A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser. Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome. The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we! SHOW NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE:

It's an after-school special about eating disorders that thinks it's a profound, Salinger-esque statement on growing up. But don't let that fool you, because the soundtrack is stacked with hits! We return to the world of Kevin Smith this week with the soundtrack to 2001's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back! In Jay and Silent Bob's "final" adventure, Smith called in all his favors and created a madcap Hollywood sendup featuring dozens of celebrity cameos, movie parodies and insults hurled directly at the audience. This movie came out right before 9/11, and boy can you feel it. The soundtrack features 90s holdovers like Marcy Playground and Stroke 9, 80s hits from Bon Jovi, Run DMC and Morris Day & The Time, and some more modern songs that, quite frankly, have aged like shit. Yabba Dabba Doo! We couldn't let the summer end without covering a ridiculous summer blockbuster, and The Flintstones is most certainly that. The Steven Spielberg-produced, live-action adaptation of the 60s cartoon has to be seen to be believed. It's got gaudy caveman sets and costumes, John Goodman hamming it up as Fred Flintstone, and a wild soundtrack... Good lord, the soundtrack. One half of this album features awkward attempts at caveman humor by the likes of The B(C)-52s, Big Audio Dynamite, and Us3. The other half is a bizarre collection of Flintstones novelty songs that predate the movie. On our very first episode, we discuss the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's 1994 debut feature, Clerks.
The two of us have a long and complicated history with Smith's body of work, but one thing we agree on is that this soundtrack kinda rules! Find out what makes this soundtrack tick, why one cover tune owns while another one stinks, and whatever happened to the band Bash & Pop... SHOW NOTES:

19 Apr 2019 | Episode 10: 007 Countdown | 01:21:51
To celebrate our tenth episode, we're counting down our top ten James Bond theme songs. For as many cliches and signatures as the James Bond series has invented and perfected over the years, one that everyone can get behind is its classic theme songs. Sometimes brassy and orchestral, other times painfully pop-oriented, there really is a James Bond theme for every taste. We're covering everything from Dr. No to Spectre and all points in between. With over 50 years of history and 20+ songs to choose from, crafting this list was no easy task. But not only are we counting down our ten favorites, we'll also dig into our bottom five. That's what this week's show is all about: The cream of the crop and the worst of the worst. Will your favorite Bond song be represented here? There's only one way to find out... SHOW NOTES:

09 May 2019 | Episode 11: Earth Girls Are Easy | 00:53:33
This week we invite you to sit back, relax and have a mental margarita as we discuss the soundtrack to 1989's Earth Girls Are Easy. This movie is a lot of things all at once. It's a bouncy 80s sex comedy; it's a parody of MTV-obsessed LA youth; it's a sci-fi film with a wacko retro-future aesthetic. It's also a showcase for Julie Brown's brand of humor and music, and man do we get a lot of that! We've also got the B-52s! And Nile Rodgers! And Hall & Oates covering The O'Jays! This soundtrack is all over the place, but how does it all hang together? Join us as we sort it all out. SHOW NOTES:

23 May 2019 | Episode 12: Godzilla '98 | 01:04:47
This week's episode is all about 1998's Godzilla, the summer blockbuster that proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that size doesn't actually matter. You would be hard pressed to find a movie soundtrack more 1998 than Godzilla: The Album. Featuring the likes of The Wallflowers, Jamiroquai, and Ben Folds Five, the soundtrack to Roland Emmerich's epic disaster is chock full of radio-friendly 90s rock, and also the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy shouting over a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir". And then there's the movie, which is everything wrong with blockbuster filmmaking distilled into two hours of stupid. We get into all of it this week, as well as holding a Godzilla scream-off, make up our own Godzilla-themed song lyrics, and discuss why there's never been a bad cover of David Bowie's "Heroes".

07 Jun 2019 | Episode 13: The Wedding Singer | 01:37:23
It's time to hit the dance floor, people! On this episode of the O/S/T Party, we aren't just covering the soundtrack to Adam Sandler's 1998 rom-com The Wedding Singer. This week we're discussing EVERY SONG IN THE FILM! When your film revolves around a down-on-his-luck wedding singer warbling out 80s jukebox hits and screaming at newlyweds, as well as tons of homages to the heyday of MTV, how could we not? It's hard to remember a time when The Wedding Singer wasn't simply another stop along the 80s nostalgia railroad, but this film actually predates that trend by a couple of years. This soundtrack features megahits from The Police, Culture Club and Billy Idol, as well as staples from artists such as New Order, The Psychadelic Furs, Elvis Costello and more! Join us as we break down this soundtrack hit by neon-soaked hit! SHOW NOTES:

20 Jun 2019 | Episode 14: Beavis and Butt-Head Do America | 01:18:44
This week we're hitting the road like Sam and Max! Or rather, like Beavis and Butthead, because on this week's episode we're discussing Beavis and Butt-Head Do America! If you had told us twenty years ago that THIS would be one of the 90s' most enduring comedies, we might have laughed in your face. Or we might have said, "Yes! That rules!" Because, honestly? This movie still rules. It's held up far better than one would expect. And the soundtrack is peak 1996. We've got the tail end of 70s nostalgia with Isaac Hayes riffing on his famous Shaft theme. We've got a truly odd track from the one and only Engelbert Humperdinck. We also have cuts from White Zombie, Rancid, a pre-Tragic Kingdom No Doubt, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers delivering one of the best damn cover songs ever. It's a wild ride, so buckle up and don't forget the TP! SHOW NOTES:

18 Jul 2019 | Episode 16: My Fellow Americans | 01:23:57
On this week's episode, we want to share with our fellow Americans (and international friends) one of our favorite forgotten 90s comedies: My Fellow Americans! Two ex-presidents (Jack Lemmon and James Garner) go on the lam after a government cover-up leads to their attempted assassination, and the only way to save their skins is by taking a road trip to Ohio! That's right, it's another one of those movies. As for the soundtrack, we've got an eclectic mix of jazz oldies from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, classic rock from Elvis Presley and CCR, and a couple of real oddball cover songs! But how well does it represent the film? That's what we're here to find out.

09 Aug 2019 | Episode 17: Super Mario Bros.
This week on The O/S/T Party, we're jumping through a portal into another dimension to walk some dinosaurs and discuss the soundtrack to 1993's SUPER MARIO BROS! It's a film that pushes viewers to the breakpoint and offers so much off-the-wall creativity, it's almost unreal. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, an Englishman and a Colombian, play Italian brothers chasing a kidnapped princess into a dimension where an industrialist dinosaur-man played by Dennis Hopper rules his city with an iron fist. All of this is somehow based on a video game. As for the soundtrack we've got a would-be hit single from Roxette, random cuts from Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Joe Satriani and Queen, and George Clinton delivers the grandest, goofiest cover of "Walk The Dinosaur" you'll ever need. There's some big, beautiful weirdness in this soundtrack—and the movie as a whole—and we'll get into all of it! SHOW NOTES:

30 Aug 2019 | Episode 18: Streets of Fire | 01:23:53
On this episode, we're digging into Walter Hill's 1984 rock n' roll fable STREETS OF FIRE! It's a musical with numbers that can level entire city blocks. It's an aggressively '80s take on motorcycle gangs of the '50s. It's a wannabe western starring a stoic hero with a duster and a Winchester. It's all of these things and so much more. Michael Paré is Tom Cody, a drifter hired to rescue his ex-girlfriend, rock singer Ellen Aim (Diane Lane) from the clutches of Willem Dafoe's Raven and his Bomber gang. The soundtrack features cuts from The Fixx and The Blasters, as well as songs written by Jim Steinman, Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks. It's a classic rock spectacle the likes of which we've never seen and perhaps will never see again. Come join us on this journey through a comic book vision of the 1950s that never was... SHOW NOTES:

19 Sep 2019 | Episode 19: The Mask | 01:07:36
It's party time! P-A-R-T...Why? Because this week we're jumping in with both feet to discuss 1994's The Mask! This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of Jim Carrey's breakout roles, and we're here to talk all about it. The movie's soundtrack sits at an odd moment in 90s music, a crossroads between new jack swing and the neo-swing revival. As a flashpoint for the swing revival, The Mask is more of a false start. Still, that didn't stop the movie from becoming a box office smash and sending Carrey's career into the stratosphere. In this episode, we discuss tracks from Royal Crown Revue, Xscape, Fishbone and, yes, Jim Carrey. It is downright impossible to talk about The Mask without mentioning a little ditty known as "Cuban Pete". Brace yourselves! SHOW NOTES:

20 Dec 2018 | Episode 2: Batman Forever | 01:26:42
Riddle me this, riddle me that, how many tunes were inspired by the Bat? This edition of The O/S/T Party finds Libby & Joe diving into the mid-90s superhero muck that is Batman Forever. It's a neon dayglo nightmare, and the soundtrack is no different, full of smooth R&B, college rock leftovers and one or two of the best songs of the 90s. Not only did this album spawn SIX. RADIO. SINGLES. ("Kiss From a Rose", anyone?) It also sold millions of copies, would be nominated for, win AND lose Grammy awards, and inspired one of the most baffling animated music videos of all time. Also in this episode, we discuss middle-aged teenager Dick Grayson, how and why this film became The Jim Carrey Show, Tommy Lee Jones' immortal putdown, and just the general rock opera-ness of the whole production. 03 Oct 2019 | Episode 20: 80s Misfits & More | 01:00:41
It's hard to believe we've made it twenty episodes! But here we are, and as we like to do on the 5's, this week we're counting down some 80s soundtrack cuts. Songs that maybe don't have the full support of a soundtrack album, or might get lost in the shuffle of an artist's other work. You might not think of some of these as misfits, but when else would we ever get to talk about them? Now, that's when! This episode also draws a pretty clear line between Libby's taste in music versus Joe's. One is smooth and laid back, while the other never met a guitar that didn't need a good smashing. (Together, they fight crime!) At any rate, kick back and enjoy this eclectic mix of 80s soundtrack tunes. Who knows, you may just come away with a new favorite song! SHOW NOTES:

It's time to get spoooooky! Join us this week as we slide into the Halloween spirit with the soundtrack to SHAUN OF THE DEAD! Not only is Edgar Wright's 2004 debut one of the greatest horror comedies of all time, the soundtrack is a rip-roaring ride through 80s power pop classics, hip-hop and electro beats, a couple of Queen songs, and all points in between. Wright is one of the last filmmakers standing who truly cares about curating a quality pop soundtrack, so this is definitely not the last we'll hear of him on this podcast. In this episode, we get into our favorite Queen songs, the implied history between Shaun and Liz, and how much it hurts to see vinyl destroyed...

31 Oct 2019 | Episode 22: Forbidden Zone | 01:00:37
Happy Halloween, party people! Join us on a strange and spooky journey to the Sixth Dimension as we discuss the soundtrack to FORBIDDEN ZONE! In the early 80s, Richard and Danny Elfman were straining to break free of the musical theatre circuit. Richard devised Forbidden Zone as a showcase for Danny's band, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, as well as a means of breaking into the film industry. The result is a wild pastiche of Vaudeville, stagecraft, animation and big band music produced completely outside the realms of studio filmmaking and any semblance of good taste. The soundtrack features tons of music from Oingo Boingo, as well as pieces cribbed from Cab Calloway, Freddy Martin and...er...The Three Stooges. It's a wicked blast of camp from start to finish, and we discuss it warts and all! SHOW NOTES:

14 Nov 2019 | Episode 23: The Color of Money | 01:24:28
Martin Scorsese recently called comic book movies "theme park rides" and the internet had a collective meltdown over it. Coupled with the release of his latest film, The Irishman, now seems like a pretty good time to discuss a Scorsese film! Join us this week as we dig into 1986's THE COLOR OF MONEY! The Color of Money follows retired pool hustler Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) taking a young hotshot named Vince (Tom Cruise) under his wing. With Vince's girlfriend Carmen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) in tow, they hit the road for a 9-ball tournament in Atlantic City. Produced by The Band's Robbie Robertson, the soundtrack features classic rock mainstays like Eric Clapton, Robert Palmer and B.B. King. Oh, and there's also a little ditty by one Warren Zevon. Perhaps you've heard it? Also in this episode, Joe and Libby find themselves hopelessly addicted to pitching bigger and better sequels to this film, because that's just the world we live in now. We're gonna have an O/S/T Party tonight, alright? Alright! This week, we are joined by Niel Jacoby, cohost of the podcast Spall Talk, to discuss the soundtrack to Alex Cox's 1984 punk rock sci-fi opus REPO MAN! Repo Man is a deeply strange film about punks repossessing cars, government conspiracies, alien life forms, and the soul-crushing nihilism of Reagan-era Los Angeles. On top of that, it's a film that wears its punk rock influence on its sleeve. With a theme song by Iggy Pop, and featuring 80s punk mainstays like Black Flag, Fear, and Suicidal Tendencies, this soundtrack is a crash course in the LA punk scene in the mid-80s. After their debut album took the world by storm, a feature film was the next logical step. 1997's Spice World is a whirlwind comedy that finds the girls goofing on their own public image, driving around in a double-decker bus, evading the paparazzi, meeting space aliens, and (of course) performing some of their biggest hits! Joining us this week is Quentin Harrison, author of "Record Redux: Spice Girls"! Quentin jumps in to help us break down the film and offers insights into what makes the group and their music so beloved. SHOW NOTES:
